The way women give birth is changing, according to BBC analysis, which has discovered that one in four births in England are now emergency caesareans. The current figure is 26% - an increase of 8% in the past five years - and the rate of elective caesareans has also gone up. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists say the system is struggling to cope with this increased level of unplanned surgeries. To discuss what's behind the rise and the potential impact on women, presenter Kylie Pentelow is joined by BBC Health Correspondent Catherine Burns, President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Dr Alison Wright, and Helen Cheyne who's a Professor of Maternal and Infant Health Research at the University of Stirling. Hannah Murray was at the height of her fame as an actor in 2016, having found fame as the much-loved Cassie in E4's teen drama Skins, she was now a regular in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones as Gilly. But behind the scenes Hannah was struggling with her mental health, and she found herself involved in an organisation which offered courses in magical healing. The following year, Hannah was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She's since retired from acting and written a memoir about those turbulent times, called The Make-Believe – A Memoir of Magic and Madness. Women's rights charity FiLiA has launched a new national campaign to get Sexual Entertainment Venues, commonly referred to as strip clubs, off the streets. This is informed by new research examining how the venues are viewed and experienced by women living, working and moving nearby. They spoke to more than 700 women across Cardiff, Edinburgh and Manchester, with 55% of women opposed to the venues, and 8% expressing supportive views. Dr Laura Favaro, Director of Research at FiLiA, joins Kylie to discuss their report. The female CEO of dating app Hinge has said that Gen Z "need AI to start conversations on dating apps because they lack the confidence of older generations". Jackie Jantos told the BBC that daters in their 20s are spending less time with other people, compared to two decades ago, has affected their ability to meet and chat in person. To discuss whether AI could help or hinder dating, and the challenges of meeting people IRL, Kylie is joined by author and journalist Olivia Petter and Jessica Evans, founder of events company BODA, which stands for Bored of Dating Apps. And BBC Music correspondent Mark Savage joins us to discuss the breaking news that Kayna King, the entrepreneur and founder of the Mobo awards, has died aged 57 from colon cancer. The Mobo Organisation called her one of the UK music industry's "most fearless champions". Presenter: Kylie Pentelow Producer: Sarah Jane Griffiths

She was 12 hours into labor when a nurse walked in carrying a tablet - and a judge appeared on the screen to decide what would happen to her body. This isn't a social media horror story. This happened in Florida, in 2026, to a woman who was not only informed - she was a doula. She had a prior C-section complicated by a dangerous hemorrhage. Refusing another surgery wasn't a whim. It was a medical decision she had every right to make. And a judge overruled her anyway. In this episode, we're getting into all of it: what your rights actually are, where they get murky, and the three things I want you to do before you ever go into labor - because when you're in labor, your job is to labor. In this episode:What actually happened in Florida - and why the details matterThe difference between informed refusal and an unsafe one (these are not the same thing)Why "rights on paper" and what happens at 3 AM in a hospital room aren't always the sameWhy I call it a birth map, not a birth plan - and why this story is why I prefer a map over a planThe three things to do before labor Why the advocacy piece is non-negotiable, especially for Black women, who are far more likely to have their pain, rights, and refusals dismissedThe one question that is one of the most powerful things you can say in a hospital roomThis episode is not about walking in braced for a fight. I didn't know too much about the impressive Johanna Hellrigl before this conversation — a friend suggested I interview her and I intuitively said yes on the spot. And I'm so glad I did! Johanna is the chef and founder behind Ama, an award-winning Northern Italian restaurant in Washington, D.C., and a board member of the Environmental Working Group who is revolutionizing what it means to nourish people — from the way she sources whole ingredients to how she cares for her team to the deeper intention behind every decision she makes. She is building a model of hospitality where indulgence, vitality, sustainability, and community coexist — proving restaurants can drive cultural and systemic change. This woman is doing the work, and you can feel it. Johanna's personal story also really moved me. As a chef, entrepreneur and mother, Johanna shares parts of her life that shaped the way she sees health, intuition, and what it means to truly take care of yourself in a world that can feel overwhelming and confusing. It's a powerful reminder of how much we're capable of when we start to question, listen, and trust ourselves more deeply. Many of us are aware of how to avoid toxins in and around our food at home, but I'll admit eating out was more of a blind spot for me. We get into the hidden plastic crisis lurking in restaurant kitchens, the truth about what's really in your pasta and why it hits so differently in Europe, the seed oil conversation with actual nuance, food waste, and so. much. more. Johanna shares practical swaps you can make today in your own kitchen to reduce your toxic load — no overwhelm, just empowered steps forward. We really covered it all! I left this conversation feeling inspired, grounded, and confident that our bodies are incredibly intelligent — and when we start to listen, everything begins to shift. Key Moments You'll Love ✨ :

In this MamasteFit Podcast: Birth Story, Hanna shares her home VBAC story after two C-sections, delivering a 9 lb 11 oz baby despite being told her pelvis was “too small” in previous births. She recounts a first pregnancy shaped by COVID stress, a long induction ending in C-section, and a discouraging postpartum comment about never birthing vaginally. Her second pregnancy included deep VBAC research, doula support, a 42-week induction attempt, painful positioning, a partial epidural, a repeat C-section, and alarming (later contradicted) claims of uterine rupture. After reviewing her op report with her provider, Hanna pursued a third pregnancy with improved nutrition, fitness using Training for Two, and spontaneous labor at 42 weeks; after 2.5 hours of pushing, an OB and midwife resolved a shoulder dystocia, and postpartum was physically tough but emotionally healing with smooth breastfeeding.Find Hanna here!: @hanna_elisabeth_turner  on Instagram@joysofbirth doula page on Instagram00:00 Welcome and Episode Preview00:48 Meet the Hosts and Mission01:35 Introducing Hanna's HBAC Story02:08 First Pregnancy During COVID03:54 Induction to First C-Section05:36 Pelvis Comment and Postpartum07:16 Second Pregnancy and TOLAC Plan10:12 Labor Struggles and Walchers13:07 Repeat C-Section Trauma16:03 Uterus Scare and Grief17:57 Second Opinion Changes Everything25:02 Choosing Home Birth Support27:20 Training for Two and Pain-Free Pregnancy32:41 Choosing Gentle Induction34:07 Pelvic Mobility Theory35:45 Membrane Sweep Plan38:17 Active Day Sparks Labor41:31 Early Labor and Support46:12 Water Breaks Intensity Hits48:20 Two Hour Push Marathon52:35 Shoulder Dystocia Emergency58:09 Big Baby Aftermath01:00:01 Postpartum Recovery Reality01:05:09 Advice After Two C Sections01:07:23 Final Thanks and Resources————

Owning Your Birth Story: Twin Mom Maddie on Natural Birth, C-Section, and Delivering Twins

Twiniversity Podcast with Natalie Diaz

In this episode of the Twiniversity Podcast, Natalie talks with Maddie Rahlf, a twin mom of three girls, about the "double whammy" delivery - giving birth to one twin vaginally and the other by C-section in the very same hour. Maddie shares how her twins were a complete surprise - a natural, spontaneous twin conception with no twins in the family, discovered at her 12-week ultrasound - and how reading Nat's book helped her find solid ground once the shock wore off. Because Baby B had a marginal cord insertion and was measuring under the 10th percentile, Maddie's pregnancy included weekly maternal fetal medicine (MFM) monitoring and an induction at 36 weeks. Natalie and Maddie walk through the delivery almost minute by minute: an easy vaginal birth for Baby A after only a few pushes, Baby B flipping transverse the moment she had the womb to herself, the attempts to turn her, a cervix that closed back up, and the placenta concern that finally made a C-section the safest call. Then comes the twist - it was Baby A, the vaginally delivered twin, who ended up in the NICU on CPAP, while Baby B stayed right with mom. The conversation also gets into recovering from a vaginal birth and major abdominal surgery at the same time, the empowerment of being given the choice to try for a vaginal delivery, and Nat's "use your BRAIN" framework (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, Nothing) for making decisions in the moment. Maddie's biggest takeaway: if it happens, it happens - you figure it out one day at a time, and you'll have a pretty cool story to tell. This episode is a reassuring, myth-busting conversation for any twin parent who feels anxious about the possibility of a double whammy delivery. EPISODE THEMES

OA1264 - Sherise Doyley was in the early stages of labor, in a hospital bed, preparing to deliver her baby, when nurses wheeled in a computer. On the screen was a judge, notifying her of an emergency order by the State of Florida to attempt to force her to undergo a C-section, instead of first attempting vaginal delivery. For 3 hours she advocated for herself, without an attorney, barely covered in a hospital gown. How was any of this legal? What is happening? Jenessa breaks down the history of our rights to make our own medical decisions and how that is legally modified in pregnancy, Lydia shares her own birth experience and how these situations could be handled with actual compassion, and Thomas holds very still in hopes our eyes are based on movement (just kidding, Thomas is very supportive and also outraged). Against all odds (and despite several request to stop) the ladies are celebrating their 300th episode! They are celebrating with some fruity screwdrivers, an article in the local paper, and OF COURSE, the stories of two amazing women. Kelley wines about Gyo Fujikawa, an illustrator whose name you may not recognize, but you certainly know her art which shaped countless childhoods and told racists to SUCK IT. In honor of Mothers' Day, Emily tells the harrowing story of Inés Ramírez Pérez who showed the world just what a mother is capable of enduring for the love of her children. You want results. Real, lasting, life-changing results. And the guys are breaking down the ONE investment that actually delivers... hiring a great personal trainer. But here's the thing... most people quit. Sal, Adam, and Justin go through the top six reasons why people stop working with their trainers, and they pull zero punches doing it. From the cost objection to boring workouts to scheduling excuses, they expose what's really going on AND whether AI can step in and fill the gap. Spoiler alert... AI is NOT the answer. Not because information isn't valuable, but because information was NEVER the point. Google has existed for decades. Fitness magazines have been free at the library forever. The real value of a great coach is the human relationship, the behavioral steering, the ability to READ you when your data says one thing but your face says another. However, the optimal dose of ketorolac after cesarean delivery has not been determined. In this episode, we will summarize a brand new randomized, controlled, single-blind trial of pregnant women undergoing cesarean delivery under regional anesthesia at a large academic medical center between June 2022 and October 2023. Enrolled participants were randomized to receive an initial loading dose of 60 mg (intervention) or 30 mg (control) of intravenous ketorolac in the operating room at the end of surgery.1. It's C-section Awareness Month, so we just had to talk about it on the show! A c-section is one of the most common surgeries in the world,  yet many women are sent home with very little guidance on how to truly recover. If you've had a c-section and felt unsure how to heal your core, manage scar tissue, return to exercise, or feel connected to your body again… this episode is for you. In this conversation, Dr. Des breaks down what c-section recovery actually involves, common symptoms many moms experience but rarely talk about, and the key steps that can help you rebuild strength, confidence, and function after birth. Because being “cleared at 6 weeks” does not always mean fully healed. In This Episode, We Explore: What actually needs healing after a c-section Common symptoms like pulling, numbness, shelfing, weakness, and back pain Why scar tissue matters more than most women realize Early recovery tips that support healing How to safely rebuild core and pelvic floor strength Why emotional recovery matters too Why This Matters C-section recovery deserves more than rest and vague instructions. With the right support, women can improve strength, reduce discomfort, reconnect with their core, and return to movement feeling strong and empowered. This is a major part of the work we do inside RESTORE and the Pelvic Floor, Core & More App, where women receive guided postpartum support that actually makes sense. ✨ Learn more here: https://balancedmomtality.com/the-app   Want a Guided Healing and Rehab Program to Help You Reconnect and RESTORE? Ellenore Scott joins the show to discuss her historic season, where she has achieved the rare feat of having multiple productions running simultaneously on and off Broadway. She shares the incredible story of her son Ford's birth, which took place less than twenty-four hours after she walked the red carpet for the opening night of Ragtime at Lincoln Center. Ellenore reveals the logistical gymnastics of negotiating with her doctor to delay her C-section so she wouldn't miss her opening night, and how she transitioned from celebrating a professional milestone to welcoming her first child the very next morning. The conversation dives deep into her creative process, specifically how she builds a unique movement language for vastly different shows like Ragtime and Titanique. Ellenore explains her history as a "TikTok girly" during the pandemic and how she successfully choreographed the viral Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical entirely over Zoom. She also breaks down her secret "choreographic signature"—the "bitch swerve"—and tells us exactly where to look for it in her current productions. Ellenore Scott is an acclaimed choreographer, director, and performer whose work spans Broadway, television, and digital media. A former finalist on So You Think You Can Dance, she has choreographed Broadway productions including Funny Girl, Mr. Saturday Night, and the current revival of Ragtime, as well as the long-running Off-Broadway hit Little Shop of Horrors. She is a multiracial artist with a heritage encompassing African American, Indigenous, Filipino, Mexican, Hawaiian, and Irish roots. Ellenore is also the founder of her own dance company and has served as an associate to Andy Blankenbuehler on the Broadway revival of Cats. Most people think allergies are seasonal annoyances and autoimmune disease is just genetic bad luck. The science says otherwise and the doctor making that argument has spent her career tracing both epidemics back to a cascade of well-intentioned medical decisions made thirty years ago that got it catastrophically wrong. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Tania Elliott, board-certified in internal medicine and allergy and immunology, to break down why your immune system is not broken, it is confused. We cover how chronic stress triggers the same physiological response as a bacterial invasion, why 80% of autoimmune diseases occur in women, and what is actually driving the 1 in 3 allergy epidemic. Dr. Elliott reveals the institutional failure behind the 2001 peanut guidance, why the 0.2% peanut allergy rate in Israel versus 10% in the US is not a coincidence, and why nut-free schools may be quietly creating the next wave of food allergies. We also get into what Benadryl is actually doing to your brain, why food sensitivity tests sold through influencers are close to useless, the real reason adults are suddenly developing shellfish allergies, and why the black plastic container your lunch arrived in is a serious problem. Who has the right to determine how a pregnancy should be delivered? Kelley Fox and Rev. Terry Williams tackle recent reporting that documents incidents in Florida where Black women have been forced into delivering their pregnancies via C-section against their will. Putting these latest examples of government overreach into historical & social context, Kelley and Rev. Terry cover the ethics of bodily autonomy, analogous medical freedom situations, and the role racism plays in the policies of force that disparately affect pregnant people in the United States. On this episode of The MamasteFit Podcast: Birth Stories, Gina (perinatal fitness trainer and doula) and Roxanne (certified nurse midwife) interview Destiny about her two births. Her first ending with an unplanned C-section in 2024 after laboring to 10 cm, pushing 1.5 hours, spiking a fever with concern for infection, and baby's sustained high heart rate. Her second, a much faster VBAC just three weeks ago! For baby #2, Destiny had planned a repeat C-section because he was breech for weeks—until a last-minute ultrasound showed he'd flipped head-down, leading to a TOLAC with Pitocin, lots of movement (wireless monitors!), sudden transition, and a 15-minute unmedicated push. She shares postpartum comparisons, the importance of understanding why a C-section happened, limiting room “spectators,” and that unmedicated stitches plus a 45-minute intern tutorial is not the vibe.00:00 Podcast Welcome00:39 Meet The Hosts01:30 Destiny Joins01:41 First Birth Prep02:39 Late Pregnancy Recap04:13 Labor Begins05:18 Admitted And Monitored07:53 Epidural And Slowdown09:45 Pushing And C Section Call15:12 Recovery And Anxiety15:51 Second Birth Goals16:24 Breech Surprise Flip19:11 Tolac Induction Starts21:27 Pitocin And Hospital Checks22:22 Pitocin Starts Slow23:12 Hip Opening Moves24:17 Supportive Care Team25:27 Station Zero Progress27:49 Epidural Decision Talk28:58 Transition Hits Hard30:18 Chaotic Rapid Delivery34:11 Postpartum Recovery Win35:33 Advice After C Section38:41 Fast Labor Lessons40:58 Sutures and Boundaries42:31 Wrap Up and Resources____________

April is International Cesarean Awareness Month — and I can think of no better time to bring back one of our most-loved episodes. In the Netherlands, the cultural weight around birth can make a cesarean feel like a deviation from the "right" path. But what if a C-section could still be a deeply empowering, connected, and beautiful birth experience? Dr. Koen Deurloo, OB-GYN at Diakonessenhuis Utrecht, is proof that it absolutely can.Dr. Deurloo is the pioneer of the mother-assisted cesarean — a practice he developed in 2017 in which the birthing parent plays an active, physical role in their own surgical birth. Since then, he has performed around 400 mother-assisted births, published his book Door de ogen van een gynaecoloog, and is now training gynecologists across the Netherlands to bring this option to more hospitals. In this episode, together with Dr. Deurloo we explore:What a mother-assisted cesarean actually looks like — and why it's just 4 extra minutesHow the Dutch medical system approaches maternal agency in the operating theaterSkin-to-skin contact, postpartum recovery, and bonding after a cesareanHow to advocate for your birth preferences — even when the system pushes backWhy cesarean births deserve to be honored, not minimizedWhether you're planning a C-section, want to be prepared for every birth path, or simply believe that mothers deserve to feel empowered in every delivery room — this episode is for you.Find Dr. Deurloo:

In this solo episode, I'm talking about something that can feel complicated in grief… the gifts our babies leave us with. And no—I don't mean anything that takes away from the pain or tries to “silver line” their loss. I mean the real, undeniable ways they've changed us. For a long time, I only knew Brody through pain. Through devastation. Through everything that was taken from me. But at some point, I realized… I didn't want that to be the only way I carried him. So I started to see what else was there. How deeply present I've become with the people I love. How much more authentically I show up in my life. How my perspective—shaped through grief—has created a version of me I'm actually proud of. These are the gifts. And it's okay to acknowledge them. It's okay to lean into them. It doesn't mean you're “moving on.” It means you're moving with. This is how we become the next version of ourselves—the one our babies made us. And the reason we can be both heartbroken… and incredibly proud of them at the same time.     ************************************* This Podcast is brought to you by LossLink.com. Send us Fan MailFTV This week I am a little bit upset. Not about the first subject which follows a question about what type of exercise, and at which intensity, is safe to do during pregnancy. That's a great question and a doddle to answer :)But I'm upset about the single worst Instagram video I have seen from someone working with babies. Here it is for those of you who want to have a look. The Osteopath in the video is making LOADS of dumb, and I do mean idiotic, claims about the effects of a C-section on a baby's spine and it's health. He claims the "lumbar spine is reversed" or "missing" and that is clearly complete and utter nonsense. But the video has 400k likes and this grifter has 600k followers. So I go over some of the idiotic claims people make online to scare those of you wanting, or needing, a C-section into parting with your money. And then there's a bit of jazz to calm me down :)As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles! So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering. This means you can sign up after your first child, use the program and recover and then still have access after giving birth to child 2 and 3!None of this "pay X amount a year" nonsense, once you've paid..you've paid! This makes HPNB not just the most efficient and complete post-partum recovery program, it's also BY FAR the best value.Though I'm not terribly active on  Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. I am however active on Threads so find me there! Liz's first birth was an induction that ended in a cesarean. When she said, “I can feel that,” referring to pressure, her doctor put her under general anesthesia without consent. With her second, Liz planned for a VBAC. The midwife broke her water without consent. She labored to 9.5 centimeters and stalled with a cervical lip. She was overwhelmed by so many hands touching her as they tried to manually resolve it. Liz was defeated and accepted another non-emergent cesarean, this time with the complicated layer of her father-in-law performing it. But before she knew what was happening, she was under general anesthesia again without consent. Twice, she did not hear her baby's first cry and still has no idea how long it was before she held them.Liz sunk deep into postpartum depression and survival mode. It was years before someone told her what happened wasn't okay. She began the long road of healing with pelvic floor therapy, talk therapy, and rebuilding her strength. She found God meeting her in the tiniest, most intimate details of her journey. For her third birth, she chose to invest. She traveled for her care. She chose loving, hands-off support with midwife Paige Boran at A Woman's Place and her doula, Danielle Kent. And this birth was every bit as different as she needed it to be. Spontaneous, waterbirth, en caul. Liz reached down and pulled her baby up out of the water. She heard the first cry. She held her baby first. While this birth didn't erase what happened before, something in her soul was restored that day. Her autonomy was reclaimed. She tells us what an isthmocele is, how it can form in a prior C-section scar, and why it can sometimes lead to unexpected bleeding, pain, or fertility challenges.  You'll learn the five key symptoms that may signal an isthmocele, how this condition can affect fertility and future pregnancy plans, and the pros and cons of monitoring versus treating. Dr. Shahine also talks us through when surgical repair may be helpful, and the exact questions to ask your doctor so you can advocate for informed, personalized care.  If you've had a C-section and feel like something isn't quite right, this episode offers knowledge, reassurance, and a clear path forward.
