We've got to get that Permanent Residency. We've got to get that citizenship. And I don't fault anyone. I've been guilty of this, too. Heck, I still am. But maybe every now and then, take a pause. Breathe. Live. Areej moved from Egypt to the United Kingdom as an international student. As Eric notes at the end of today's podcast, we talk about many difficult issues with our patients.  How long they might have to live. Their declining cognitive abilities. What makes their lives meaningful, brings them joy, a sense of purpose.  But one issue we're not as good at discussing with our patients is sexual health. On today's podcast Areej El-Jawahri, oncologist specializing in blood cancers at MGH, says that sexual health is one of the top if not the top issue among cancer survivors.  Clearly this issue is important to patients.  Sharon Bober, clinical psychologist at DFCI, notes that clinicians can get caught in an anxiety cycle, in which they are afraid to ask, don't ask, then have increased anxiety about not asking.  Like any other conversation, you have to start, and through experience learn what language is comfortable for you.  Don Dizon, oncologist specializing in pelvic malignancies at Brown, suggests speaking in plain language, starting by normalizing sexual health issues, to paraphrase, “Many of my patients experience issues with intimacy and sexual health. Is that an issue for you? I'm happy to talk about it at any time.”  All guests agree that clinicians feel they need to have something they can do if they open Pandora's box.  To that end, we talk about practical advice, including: The importance of intimacy over and above physical sexual function for many patients Common causes and differential diagnoses of sexual concerns in patients with cancer and survivors Treatments for erectile dysfunction - first time the words “cock ring” have been uttered on the GeriPal Podcast - and discuss daily phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor therapy vs prn The importance of a pelvic exam for women experiencing pain What is “pelvic physical therapy?” Treatments for vaginal dryness and atrophy ACS links, NCCN links, Cancersexnetwork, and a great handout that Areej created And I get to sing Lady Gaga, also a first for GeriPal!  And let me tell you, there's nothing like the first time (sorry, I couldn't help it!).

Hello, it's AfshanWe're only days away from the 9th edition of the Fifa Women's World Cup, which is held every four years. There's a palpable excitement in the air as women's football has grown in stature, with an expanding fan base that is now being recognised by sports associations, brands, governments and the media. This edition of the World Cup, which is being held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, is set to become the most attended standalone women's sporting event in history. FIFA has sold over 1m tickets for the event. So, we had to get UAE National Team football player and Adidas athlete Areej Al Hammadi on the show for this episode to chat all about football… and the World Cup, of course. The 37-year-old Emirati footballer, whose obsession with the sport began by watching the World Cups with her brothers and playing with them as a child, had to carve her own path into playing at a national level at a time when there were very few avenues for women to go pro. Now, a very well-recognised face, this 2-time Guinness World Record holder has become a role model for other girls and women who aspire to become footballers and make it a career.Areej lays out the UAE and world football scene for us, with all its challenges and opportunities, and we talk about the Women's World Cup and what the future holds. And as FIFA's President Gianni Infantino so rightly put it recently: “The future is women.” At The Mettleset we know - the NOW is too!We hope you enjoy the episode! To know more about Areej, head to @areej.alhammadi13 and www.areejalhammadi.comIf you want to follow the FIFA Women's World Cup and all its happenings, visit fifa.com For our episode with Georgia Adderley, the co-founder of Onyx FC, the UAE's first fully female-owned football club, head to EP11: GOALS: Onyx FC Co-Founder Georgia Adderley on community, inclusion and sharing the beautiful game Our wider support team for this episode includes Editor JJ Thompson and our Artwork is by the talented Alexandra Hickey of Studio Theodore. For more info, visit www.themettleset.com , and follow us on @themettlesetDawn & Afshan @dawnable @afshahmed

In Yemen, the USAID-funded Systems, Health, and Resiliency Project (SHARP) is using innovative mobile solutions to increase immunization coverage for children. The project recently piloted an SMS reminder system and an Electronic Immunization Registry to share vaccination information between community midwives, health facilities, and parents. The result? A resounding win: uptake of Penta3 (the third dose of a vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b) increased by 38%, and dropout rates dropped significantly in the pilot area. In this podcast episode, Dr. Areej Banaja, SHARP Senior Health Facility Manager, talks to Omar Al-Gundaid, SHARP Communication Manager, about these innovative interventions and getting the message out about the importance of childhood vaccinations. Dr. Areej has eight years of experience in the clinical and public health sectors with international nongovernmental organizations and UN agencies. She has worked in humanitarian and fragile settings, focusing on emergency and outbreak response, supply chain management, and child health. Prior to joining JSI, Dr. Areej was a child health officer at the UNICEF Yemen country office, where she played a key role in the national response to outbreaks of cholera, diphtheria, and COVID-19. SHARP works to reduce maternal and infant mortality in Yemen by focusing on reproductive, maternal, newborn, child health, and nutrition coupled with support services to tackle health challenges such as COVID-19, malnutrition, and other life-threatening conditions. Mahmoud Ait Elketab is a young Moroccan man that was forced into entrepreneurship as a result of The Shutdown in the early days of this pandemic (yes, as of the posting of this video, we are still in a pandemic). He lost his job and when he began to look for a new job, he saw an opportunity. He provided a service whereby he built an online dashboard where recruiters could meet the appropriate job applicants. It was wildly successful, and he could have built a business around that alone. But that wasn't interesting to Mahmoud. He loved the community building aspect of what he built. He saw that underneath all of the uncertainty in that venture, what people really wanted was to connect. He saw how much human beings are social animals And that caught my attention. His spirit, heart, vision, and empathy are infectious. In a classic artistic pivot, he and his brother have created a new fragrance line called "Areej". Their motivation was based upon building good feelings and community like he experienced with his first venture, by evoking wonderful emotions through smell. After talking here with Mahmoud and his brother, I have no doubts that they will succeed Take a listen... I think you will too! His website

We are fortunate today to interview two oncologists whose research has catapulted palliative care forward: Jennifer Temel, author of the landmark NEJM study on early outpatient palliative care for patients with advanced lung cancer; and Areej El-Jawahri, author of the landmark JAMA article on inpatient palliative care for patients with blood cancers undergoing stem cell transplant.   Jennifer's study is most widely known for the “kicker” - not only did it improve quality of life, palliative care was associated with a couple months longer survival.   Areej's study is remarkably novel in that it is, to our knowledge, the first study of palliative care during curative treatment.   We cover a huge amount of ground today, including: Jennifer's reaction when she unblinded the study and found that palliative care was associated with prolonged life Differences between inpatient and outpatient palliative care for cancer What's in the secret sauce of palliative care?  (hint: coping) What's the right dose of palliative care? Season 7 of Marrow Masters focuses on chronic Graft vs. Host Disease sufferers, or GVHD "long haulers."  And our first episode is about an important topic that doesn't get enough attention - reproductive and sexual health.Dr. Areej El-Jawahri is an oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.   And while that is her primary role, her work experience has taught her about the need to focus on these issues.   A majority of transplant survivors struggle with sexual health issues and concerns regarding intimacy and fertility.  Dr. El-Jawahri gives us the hard numbers, as well as a wide array of symptoms and side-effects.She talks about the changing dynamic with couples when they become patient and caregiver, and how important it is to have open, honest communication regarding sexual health.  Often, a patient's concerns about their partner are misaligned with what their partner is actually prioritizing! Communication is also crucial with your medical team.  While these topics may sometimes be hard to bring up, they are important to discuss.  And today's methods of confidential, electronic communication may provide a vehicle for those who are uncomfortable having these discussions in an office setting.Dr. El-Jawahri also discusses fertility concerns for younger couples.  Often, and rightfully so, there is a rush to treat a patient's cancer.  But it may be worth consulting fertility specialists at the beginning of the process.Peg and today's guest also talk about different forms of intimacy.  While sex may be the first thing that comes to mind, there are other ways to be intimate and show each other attention and love. Finally, Dr. El-Jawahri tells us about the jaw-dropping question a patient asked her that prompted her to begin paying more attention to sex and intimacy with transplant survivors.Resources:Dr. El-Jawahri's bio: https://www.massgeneral.org/doctors/19647/areej-el-jawahriNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to this season's sponsors:Pharmacyclics: https://www.pharmacyclics.com/Janssen: https://www.janssen.com/Kadmon: https://kadmon.com/Sanofi: https://www.sanofi.com/

I love that you bought up this idea a few weeks ago, of us doing an end-of-year bonus episode for everyone. Sarah: Yes, I thought it would be a cool idea just to do a bit of a recap and also record a podcast with you because yes, I said, it's just good to spend some time with you on the podcast. Areej: Oh yes, absolutely love that. I can't even believe it's December already, and we launched this podcast in April. I think we started talking about it in January or February, so definitely at the very beginning of the year. Sarah: Yes, definitely and we've done and dusted season three and we're going into season four and I'm just like, how? Where has that time gone? I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed myself because I don't know about you, but every time I get to speak to an amazing individual in the industry and pick their brains, it's awesome, isn't it? Areej: Yes, I completely agree. I can't believe the calibre of guests we've had throughout, we've had so some brilliant women come on board and we've just discussed all topics as well. Sarah: Yes, and I think that's key, isn't it? The number of varied topics that we've covered. I suppose that leads us into my first question, the first topic that I thought we could go into, where we discuss our standout episodes from our last seasons. Now I know this is going to be very hard, and I don't know about you, but I was going through all the episodes and I was, "How do I pick this? I just want to pick them all," but I have managed to whittle down to three. How about you? Areej: Oh yes, I found it impossible. I thought it was so difficult, to be honest. I went through a lot of them and because also, we've been listeners to some and then we've been hosts to others, which I think might make us a little bit biased as well. I'm happy to try my best and give it a go. Maybe you can start with saying one, you've absolutely loved and I can try to follow. Sarah: The first one that I picked out, was Kristie Plantinga who discussed imposter syndrome. Now, the reason why I picked this one out was that this topic was so-- it's such a passion area of mine. I think all of us, or most of us feel imposter syndrome, not just in SEO, but in work in general. It was just such a great episode because we were discussing it all and...

Sister of imprisoned Saudi aid worker: 'They are already calling me a terrorist'

A court in Saudi Arabia upheld a 20-year prison term imposed on a Saudi aid worker who had criticized the government on Twitter, drawing a rare public rebuke from the US in another sign of tension between the Biden administration and the kingdom. The ruling, confirmed late Wednesday, also upheld a 20-year travel ban on Abdulrahman al-Sadhan after his release. The case against him may have roots in an elaborate ploy that began in Silicon Valley and sparked a federal case against two Twitter employees accused of spying for Saudi Arabia. The men allegedly accessed the user data of over 6,000 Twitter accounts, including nearly three dozen usernames the kingdom had wanted disclosed.Abdulrahman al-Sadhan's family has said his identity appears to have been among those leaked to Saudi authorities as the person behind an anonymous Arabic Twitter account that had amassed a large following and was critical of the government. His case is the latest example of the continued crackdown against those who criticize the Saudi government and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. It also shows the lengths to which the authorities have gone to silence them.Abdulrahman al-Sadhan's case stands out because of the severity of the sentence and its possible links with an FBI investigation and federal case in California against the two men accused of spying on behalf of the kingdom while working at Twitter with an alleged third accomplice. The Saudi appellate judges handed down their ruling Tuesday. Saudi authorities have not commented on the legal proceedings, including the most recent ruling. The court did not make the decision public.Abdulrahman al-Sadhan's sister Areej al-Sadhan, a dual Saudi-US citizen, talked to The World's host Marco Werman about the situation. Marco Werman: Areej al-Sadhan, what exactly was a crime Saudi authorities charged your brother with?Areej al-Sadhan: Basically for expressing his opinions on Twitter. It was a list of vague charges that don't make any sense, and it's all basically under the umbrella of what the Saudi call "fighting terrorism." And if you look closely at what the Saudi government considers terrorism: it's criticizing the Saudi rulers will be considered terrorism. And you were saying the two of you have been out of touch for the entire time he's been in prison thus far?For me, here in the States, even for my mom, who is also an American, we couldn't get to speak to him or see him at all. He's completely barred from any calls or visits. And even during the hearings, he was limited from contacting his lawyer. Abdulrahman's sentence of 20 years has now been augmented with a 20-year travel ban, which means your brother will be well into his 70s before he can leave the kingdom. How are you and your family taking this news? It's just crazy. It's inhumane. Unbelievable. Why would they do that for criticism, for tweets, you know, over tweets? It's just crazy. And of course, we're very upset. It's very painful. My mom has been suffering a lot as a result of this. She hasn't spoken to her son, and my brother was very close to my mom. He always checks on her. He's very loving and caring to all of us, but especially to our mother. This is very hard to be deprived from, you know, speaking to her son or seeing him. And on top of that, hearing all the details of torture and forced disappearance and mistreatment, it is just terrible and nobody should accept that. The US State Department says it is concerned about the mistreatment your brother was subjected to and that his fair trial guarantees were not respected. How has your family been dealing with the lack of transparency in Abdulrahman's case? How do you get accurate information? Luckily, there are different witnesses from the earliest of days, like when Khashoggi got assassinated in the Saudi consulate — Jamal Khashoggi. During that time, there was a lot of fear going on. There was a lot of news getting leaked of prisoners being tortured and being mistreated. During that time, my brother was disappeared for six months already, and the news I was receiving that my brother was being brutally tortured, that he might die from torture. And their brutality had reached to the point that they broke his hand and smashed his fingers, saying, "This is the hand you tweet with," or "This is the hand you write with." How did you find out about his injuries? There are several witnesses, and also it's confirmed by several human rights organizations that he was really abused in prison, and he was brutally tortured. So you yourself took to Twitter, the same platform your brother used, to express your outrage about the whole situation. What was the response there?Oh, I get threats all the time. I get threats of murder. I get threats of retaliation. As we're speaking right now, I've been receiving a lot of attacks and threats from Saudi-backed Twitter accounts, and some of them are, clearly, they are linked to the government.  You've been getting these as we've been speaking just now.Yes. What about the possibility of your traveling to Saudi Arabia to see your brother in prison? I mean, is that even on your mind? Unfortunately, I cannot travel to Saudi Arabia while MBS (Mohammed bin Salman) is actually in power. You can all imagine what would happen to me. They are already calling me a terrorist. They are calling me a traitor. They're calling me a spy and all sorts of crazy stuff. Just because I'm speaking up against the abuses to my brother and to many others in Saudi Arabia. This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

Today's episode is all about schema. And joining me today is the brilliant Beth Barnham, who is the Technical SEO Specialist at Liberty Marketing. Hey, Beth! Beth: Hey, Areej. Thanks for having me. Areej: I'm so excited that we had a pitch come through about schema. So, thank you for pitching yourself forward. Beth: No, that's cool. It's really exciting and it's one of my favourite topics. So, anybody who knows me will know that I talk about it a lot because it's just really fun. And I like to just have a lot of fun with everything. That's all there is to say. Areej: So, can you tell us a little bit more about you and how you got into the world of SEO? Beth: Yeah, sure. So, I'm a Technical SEO Specialist at Liberty Marketing based in Cardiff at the moment, but I've got an agency background. So, when I finished uni, I knew that I wanted to work in digital marketing but wasn't really sure where. So, I kind of you know, digital marketing is kind of a massive sphere, isn't it? So, I went to an agency that as a graduate style scheme, and I worked through PPC, content, social media and SEO. And originally, I thought that social media was going to be what I wanted to do and ironically, I hate it now. So, I found SEO was something that I. I liked understanding how people got to where they did online without having to kind of pay for it. So, I knew I didn't focus on that element of it when I was in that agency. It paved the way, as a lot of SEOs say, and you just kind of find your way. Then I worked at another couple of agencies before I ended up at Liberty. And Liberty is kind of carved out my technical side, which is something that I love. And I just want to get as much exposure and understanding of tech as I can. So that's why the Women in Tech SEO is brilliant, because it gives you that exposure to other women in the industry. But also, there's a lot of chat with the tech side of things as well. So, it's perfect. Areej: Yeah. And how do you find working agency side? Beth: Well, I can't compare it with anything because I've only really worked agency-side apart from other non-digital jobs. So, I love it. I love the variety and my mind is really busy. So, I like to I can work in one industry in the morning and another in the afternoon and I get that exposure to all different industries, and I learn loads of different things that I wouldn't do before. So, I like that. And I like the difference and speaking with clients and just having like-minded people around. Sometimes you don't get in the house if it's a smaller team. So that's kind of my reason for an agency. But yeah, it's quite biased because I've only ever really been an agency. Areej: I did agency for five years before moving in-house. And there's so much that you learn when your agency side. With SEOs who are starting, for example, I always advise them to start with the...

On this episode, Byron Chung, our Executive Director, sits down with two phenomenal leaders in our community.  Areej Masoud is a Christian-Aramean Palestinian, born and currently living in Bethlehem. She is justice oriented, takes action towards change through the faith-based communities she belongs to, and is passionate in raising awareness and promoting Palestinians' struggles through local and public speaking events. Based on her experience in communication, development and advocacy, she is working on an online based startup in branding, communications and social media marketing in hopes she can help other startups rise, despite the economic restrictions the occupation forces upon Palestinians.  Reverend Michael Yoshii received the Pacific School of religion Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002, recognizing his pastoral leadership and social justice activism, including work on local racial justice issues, LGBTQ equity, and affordable housing activism. In post retirement Ministry, he serves on the International Committee for human rights in the Philippines Global Council, and is a co chair of the Friends of Wadi Foquin, a partnership started in 2009 through Michael's previous congregation and other United Methodist Churches with the Palestinian village of Wadi Foquin located southwest of Bethlehem on the green line. Wadi Foquin is a small and actually somewhat obscure village -- but is emblematic of much of the West Bank Palestinian agricultural/farm reality. It's a microcosm of the larger Palestinian reality. Michael first met Areej in Bethlehem on one of his trips to the region, and a their connection has been fortified through solidarity.  Areej and a cohort of emerging interfaith and cross sector leaders recently completed our Wisdom-Based Leadership Certificate program. In this conversation they share about that experience and provide a firsthand telling of what it looks like to create social transformation in the midst of the Palestinian reality. To get more content like this and learn more about ignite and PSR go to psr.edu.

Welcome to a new episode of the Women in Tech SEO episode. I'm Areej and I'm the founder of Women in Tech SEO.  Today's episode is all about e-commerce SEO strategy and joining me is the brilliant Laura Brady, SEO Manager at NOVOS. Hey, Laura! Laura: Hi. How are you? Areej: Yeah, I'm good. Thanks. We were just saying that I'm really excited about this episode because I've recently started an in-house ecommerce role. So I think I'm going to learn tons from it.  Laura: Yeah, no, it's really good to talk about it. I previously didn't work in e-commerce either, so they need to have a really just certain last year and a half doing it. So I know how you're feeling. Areej: Awesome. Well, can you tell everyone a little bit about you and how you got started in the world of SEO? Laura: Yeah. Sure. So I'm Laura, I work for NOVOS as an SEO manager focusing on e-commerce strategy. I've been at NOVOS since I joined mid pandemic. So when it just kicked off, so in April 2020, and before that, I worked at Screaming Frog for just under three years. And that was where I kicked off my SEO career. Quite lucky to start there. Areej: Does NOVOS mainly focus on, is it all e-commerce clients that they work with? Laura: I'd say like 98% of replies that e-commerce might have the odd one that, that isn't specifically e-commerce but like, yeah, I would say the vast majority is e-commerce. Areej: I think it's really nice to be able to specialize and have a niche. When I was on the agency side, we kind of worked across so many different things and I can imagine there's definitely a lot of benefits that comes from focusing on that one industry. Laura: Definitely it's very fast-paced as well. So you kind of have to hit the ground running as well. Areej: Awesome. Well, you know, we're part of women in tech SEO and something that I always love to ask all women who, whether they come on the podcast or have one of our workshops or interviews, is just get a bit of an understanding about, you know, what, what empowers you and what keeps you motivated and inspired within the industry? Laura: I think it's just that there are so many different things. I can't really give you one, one example, but I think I've been really lucky to work in two really good workplaces. I've learnt so much from everyone, we get to work with so many different team members. We're not really siloed into one team or anything. So that's been awesome. And like, obviously Screaming Frog was cool too, but like, I guess it was just like, just picking up on everyone else's kind of advice and just, I'm not really afraid to go and ask questions to other people and that kind of throws me into things. So it's more just kind of. Just not saying no to things and just like that, taking the opportunities and projects and I've picked stuff up along...

I think from the very first time we ever spoke, I remember you telling me all about how you're a wedding photographer. Introduce yourself to everyone and let us know what you do in your world. Karen: Awesome. Well, I'm a wedding photographer, as you've mentioned, and I'm also an SEO consultant as well. The approach I have with SEO is to really kind of coach and empower and educate clients. So it's a little bit of a kind of random way that I got into this. I didn't really set out. Intending to do SEO, but I phoned from my own business. I wanted to be phoned more by the right client and Google, as we know, as a fantastic matchmaker. So I started learning SEO back in 2007 and got my website ranking really well, and then went through all the trials and tribulations like Panda and penguin and Got banned from Google at one point. And it was purely accidental. It was not intended to be not. But I realized then that you can't really do SEO kind of half-heartedly, you know, it's kind of all or nothing because there's so many kinds of updates and changes and it's a constantly evolving kind of space really. So I realized that I needed to improve my lack of resources as well in terms of where I was getting trusted information from. And that's when I started helping people in the community, the photography community that I'm in. Areej: Do you help other wedding photographers optimize their websites? Karen: I do. I have a client base of photographers around the world from the U S I've worked with clients and New Zealand, Australia, kind of, I'm thinking there's a couple of different African countries as well. Europe. So I have an international client base and really the niche that I specialize in is wedding photography specifically. Yep. In Canada, Syrian refugee kids find belonging through hockey

In many ways, Yamen Bai is just like any other 11-year-old kid in Canada.“I like to play hockey,” Yamen said in a phone interview, adding that his favorite part of the sport is scoring goals and winning games.Unlike many kids in Canada, where hockey is a sport embedded in the country’s national identity, Yamen didn’t put on his first pair of skates until last year. He was born in Syria, and his family sought asylum in Iraq in 2016 to escape Syria’s civil war. A few years later, Yamen, his siblings and mother landed in the Canadian province of Newfoundland.“I didn't expect he'd come here and pick up hockey,” Yamen’s mom, Fatima Aldiab, told The World through a translator. But it didn’t take long for her son to start asking to join a nearby team. In January 2020, when local coach Michael Doyle heard the young Syrian boy wanted to learn how to skate and needed gear, he grabbed a pair of kid-sized skates and took Yamen to a nearby rink. Saska Benedicic Tomat, who works to help refugees integrate into communities through sports, says playing on a team helps refugees feel part of their new societies. Credit: Ryan Cooke/CBC “The first time, I [fell],” Yamen said. “And the first time, I didn’t love it. It was hard.” Soon enough, he learned how to handle a stick and skate well. From then on, Yamen was hooked on hockey.Doyle told CBC News that he took to Twitter to see if anyone had extra skates or pads to donate to the boy. Within 20 minutes, gear started showing up at his door.“People were just amazing,” Doyle said. “Like, the community just came together and it was nothing like I’ve ever experienced or ever expected to have happen.”With gear in hand, Yamen didn’t waste any time. He joined a local team and started practicing. Soon, he could keep up with the other players.“Now, I’m good [at hockey]," he said. “I can skate hard. And I [don’t] fall. And I can [score a] goal.” TSN broadcaster James Duthie dedicated a chapter of his latest book to Yamen Bai and his story of joining hockey in Canada. Credit: Ryan Cooke/CBC Yamen’s mom says she’s thankful for the help from her new Canadian neighbors."I was happy for him and I wanted him to continue playing,” Aldiab said. “Yamen really loves hockey. He wakes up at 6 a.m. before his 7 a.m. practice."In addition to finding a sport he loves, Yamen has also made a bunch of friends on the ice. That includes two other Syrian refugee children, Areej and Anas, for whom Doyle also helped procure gear. This story of refugees finding empowerment and community through sports isn’t unique to Canadian hockey. Saska Benedicic Tomat, who works for the International Sports and Culture Association (ISCA), helps refugees integrate into communities through sports. Playing on a team, she says, can offer a short break from the other stressors refugees face.“They feel that they can do something good for their body, and for their health,” she said. “Because, at the same time, they are struggling with just the basic things they need to do in their life.”Joining a team also leads to the more intangible goal of refugees becoming part of their new society. “They could go, I don’t know, alone to the field or the forest and run. But it’s the belonging [that] is important. So they belong to a team, and they can work together, they can play football with someone,” Benedicic Tomat said. “And there, they can also interact with the locals. And this is how they get to know each other.” Yamen says the best part of hockey is his team.  Credit: Ryan Cooke/CBC Importantly, Benedicic Tomat says these interactions are also beneficial for local players.“Playing with refugees just opens our eyes, our lives, and hearts, as well,” she added. “We can’t keep looking at refugees as a burden, as a cost. It’s so important to look at the group as a competent group — as a group that can really bring something to us, to the table, to the club, to the local community.”To help with that, ISCA offers free online courses to teach athletes and coaches how to welcome refugees to the field. With the right support, Benedicic Tomat says, it’s not uncommon for refugees to become managers or coaches of teams. Yamen says he just wants to keep playing hockey. After scoring his first goal during the holiday championship tournament this year, his team ended up winning the game. Yamen left the ice with a gold medal around his neck, just one year after lacing up for the first time.“I’ve been very, very, very happy,” he said. “I want to skate every day.”

Popular lines include: "To sacrifice my own life for Pakistan!" "I pledge to be a pilot, and help everyone!" These videos have been traced to an event that took place at PISJES (Pakistan International School Jeddah English Section), in 2011. The school has many events that are often meant to promote Pakistani pride. For better or worse, after going viral this particular event has gained international meme spotlight, as well as criticism due to some of the messages. In this podcast episode we talk to Areej Khalid, who was one of the students at this school and also was present at this event. Areej answers many of the questions on our minds and offers her perspective on the controversy. Areej's TikTok Username: areeju.kIG: jeejskhalid

Ep 282 Love Avoidance Guests: Areej Siddiqui   “She loves me, she loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not” is a game played by someone while plucking petals off of a flower. The petal supposedly represents the truth between the object of their affection loving them or not.  On Valentine’s Day, it’s not unusual to want to know you are loved and that you do love. However, as family and couples therapist Areej Siddiqui says, “Love is not always embraced by everyone. In fact, there are people who are love avoidant.” In other words, they choose to remain single.  The factors are complex but are linked to the primary caregiver early in life. Siddiqui says, “There may have been a negative relationship; there may have been a smothering relationship; there may have been an emotionally vacant relationship.” All are factors that could lead a child to be reluctant, suspicious or afraid of intimacy.  We invited Areej Siddiqui to join us for a Conversation That Matters about love, our need to connect and how to get past avoidance. Checkpoints, borders, normalcy, and hope: a sketch of daily life in the West Bank.  --- Areej Masoud lives in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. In terms of physical distance, it’s very close to Jerusalem. In terms of social reality, it’s a world away.  “If I want to go to Jerusalem, I need to get a permit. It’s not like I want to go, and I just start my car and leave. I would have to go through the pedestrian walk, and to do that I need to get a permit. The permit is not like a visa with clear criteria why you get it, why you don’t get it. I would need to go to a military base to request that, and you most probably won’t get it. But if you do, you need to go and wait at the checkpoint … it’s very humiliating.”  Areej is a Palestinian Christian, which means she belongs to a people who once made up 30 per cent of the population. These days, they make up less than 1 per cent of those living on the West Bank.  "I always felt jealous of other Christians, where their worst enemy could be their neighbour, or their ex-best friend. I do have an enemy, and that enemy is causing the persecution of myself and my people. Loving my enemy does have a different meaning, and that’s only when I was able to live both of my identities together. When you are not able to live that, like loving your enemy, you can’t consider yourself a Christian.”  The Arab-Israeli situation is among the world’s most intractable conflicts. It’s enormously complicated, and a minefield of a political issue.  In this episode of Life & Faith, Simon talks to someone who lives those tensions every day, and tries to navigate them using Jesus’ words about peacemaking and love of enemies as a compass. Areej shares stories of what life is like for her people: Can you be sure water is going to come out of the tap? How do you hold down a job? How do you travel when you’re not allowed near your country’s airport? And why would someone actively choose to live under these kinds of pressures?  "Hope is something not to be taken for granted: we have to have it each morning. Hope is when you know what your mission is and where you’re heading to and who you are, and what is your community and what they mean to you, and what you mean to them. It’s like waking up in the morning knowing you are going to have a bad day, but then deciding you are going to have hope, create hope. And if you don't have it that day, you know someone else found it for you and with you, and they will share that with you.”  — SUBSCRIBE to Life & Faith on Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/cpxpodcast OR on Spotify: http://cpx.video/spotify FIND US on Facebook: www.facebook.com/publicchristianity FOLLOW US on Twitter: www.twitter.com/cpx_tweet VISIT our website: www.publicchristianity.org

This week we dust off the cobwebs and officially start our second season. After a leisurely break battling our respective extreme weather conditions, we’re back with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity after tinkering under the hood of the podcast and slightly reconfiguring how we do things around here. Over the coming weeks and episodes, you might notice a few changes. Firstly, we’re making an effort to make our episodes shorter. Now that every man, woman, and child and pet has their own podcast, we know that your time is more valuable than ever to squeeze all that content into your ear-holes, so together with our superstar producer Areej, we’re working extra hard behind the scenes to get things tighter and leaner so you only get that nice top creamy layer of Jacky Winter aweseomness that you have grown to love. Secondly, we’re going to be introducing more interviews with people who have absolutely nothing to do with the advertising or design community, but still have valid lessons and experiences to share regarding production or the sheer experience of making things and putting them out into the world. As I’ve spoken about here previously, I’ve learned most of my greatest lessons in business from being a client and patron of businesses myself. From architects to cafe owners, we hope to really expand the professional scope of individuals from all creative corners, in hopes that we can really broaden the discussion on the thoughts, processes, and systems that people from all professions use to Make Their Thing. Fear not! We’ll still be bringing you stories and people from our favourite agencies and brands, but we’ll just be adding a bit of new blood to the mix. Between both honing and broadening our focus with our guests, we’ll be breaking things up a bit with some more extended discussion between the three of us on some of the most exciting and thought-provoking articles and announcements from our ‘Mini-Links’ feature, the part of the show where we crap on about things we read on the internet from our #professionaldevelopment slack channel. All in all, our focus hasn’t changed - We’re still determined to be a platform and voice for those individuals and processes behind the scenes that help creative projects come to life and we hope you like what we have in store! One thing that we’ve really relied on to help us get this far is your feedback and support. From suggesting interview and discussion topics, to reviewing and rating the podcast on iTunes, it’s been so encouraging to hear from so many of you. To help get us to the next season, we really need this to be a 2-way conversation, so please drop us a line and let us know what you think! Do you have a question, a suggestion, or a suggested person to interview? Don’t be shy, we REALLY love an email. It makes our day, so go on and drop us a line at podcast@jackywinter.com. Intervention participants also reported a decline in anxiety symptoms compared to control patients who reported an increase in anxiety from baseline to week-2 (HADS-Anxiety: -0.80 vs. 1.1, P = 0.0006) Based on these findings, Dr El-Jawahri advocates incorporated palliative care become part of wider practice.
