Have you ever asked yourself? Do I give my children room to make decisions and mistakes, or do I try to control outcomes too tightly? How often am I sitting down with my kids and really listening to their perspective instead of just telling them what to do? Am I open about my struggles as a parent and willing to admit when I don't have all the answers? Navigating the relationship between father and son is never straightforward, especially as your child grows into a young adult. On this episode of The Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner welcomes his son Ethan for a candid discussion about the so-called "friendship gap"—that elusive space between being too much of a friend and not enough of a parent. Larry and Ethan get real about their own family dynamics, sharing personal stories of where things clicked—and where they missed the mark. From lecture-based parenting in elementary school to establishing new routines as Ethan enters adulthood, they explore the effects of too much leniency or authority, and the importance of clear communication, shared expectations, and accountability. Whether you're raising toddlers or about to launch your kids into the world, this episode is packed with relatable, actionable insights on fostering a deeper father-child bond—while still preparing your kids for the real world. Stick around for honest reflections, a few laughs, and tips that will help any dad walk the fine line between being a guide, a leader… and a friend. Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: Balance Structure and Connection: Avoid leaning too hard into “just being friends” or being purely authoritarian. Kids crave both boundaries and genuine connection. Use Storytelling and Curiosity: When tough conversations arise, share your personal stories and ask thoughtful questions to guide your child's own critical thinking—instead of falling into lecture mode. Create a Supportive Environment: Physical order (like a clean room or set routines) supports mental clarity and well-being; maintain structure even during transitions to help kids thrive. This episode is packed with relatable, actionable insights on fostering a deeper father-child bond—while still preparing your kids for the real world. Here's what research and observation highlight about family emotional connection: children who reported having both warmth and structure from their fathers had a 30% higher chance of reporting positive life satisfaction and emotional regulation in adulthood compared to those who experienced only discipline or only friendship. Studies show that 67% of adolescents report they “completely tune out” or “stop listening” during long lectures from parents, favoring concise, two-way conversations instead. Studies show that 70% of young adults feel unprepared for the practical aspects of adulthood, while 59% of parents report feeling “uncertain” about how to best guide their children through these years 1stphorm.com/dadedge thedadedge.com/alliance  https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKmhchXA95H/?igsh=bHcybXFlNHFwYmhl

Have you ever asked yourself: How do I balance teaching my kids to be tough with also being emotionally available for them? Am I open with my children about my own fears or vulnerabilities, or do I try to hide them? Have I ever allowed my pride to get in the way of seeking help for my kids? Today, Larry Hagner sits down with Super Bowl champion Ricky Watters to explore a legacy that transcends the football field. Ricky—a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the NFL's most dynamic running backs of the 90s—opens up about his journey from being adopted as a baby in Harrisburg's inner city to building his own family's legacy as a father, mentor, and now, author. Ricky shares how his parents, especially his father—a tough yet deeply loving Korean War veteran—shaped him with wisdom, resilience, and unwavering belief. Even though his father's injuries kept him from running drills, he made sure Ricky was always supported, teaching him critical lessons in confidence, leadership, and reading people. Larry and Ricky dive deep into stories about overcoming adversity, finishing what you start, and stepping out of comfort zones. Beyond football, Ricky reveals the heartwarming story of adopting his youngest son, Shane, from Korea, and the deep impact that decision had on their entire family. Whether you're leading a team, raising kids, or simply striving to become a better man, this conversation is filled with wisdom and practical tools to help you live with intention and purpose. Get ready for a powerful, unforgettable episode that will inspire you to lead with love, leave a legacy, and—most importantly—never quit. Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: The Power of Example: Ricky shares the profound influence his adoptive father had on him—an injured Korean War vet who, despite physical limitations, found ways to teach essential life lessons through other men in the community. The takeaway? You don't need to be perfect to be present. “He taught me how to fight, how to lead, and how to read a room, and most of all, how to believe in myself.” Breaking the Mold of Fatherhood: While many men were taught to mask their fears, Ricky's dad encouraged open conversations—even about being scared. The result? A relationship built on trust, honesty, and emotional strength. “If I was scared, I could talk to my dad. I could be real with him.” The Legacy Continues: Ricky opens up about adopting his youngest son, Shane, from Korea—a full-circle moment born from his own adoption story. He and his wife's journey shows the beauty and challenge of choosing family, and how nurturing love can transform lives. Life Lessons from Sports (And Beyond): From backyard football to the Super Bowl, Ricky reveals that greatness is about more than athletic talent—it's about grit, finishing what you start, and lifting up others along the way. This episode goes far beyond football, exploring the valuable lessons passed on from Ricky's father, the challenges of growing up and raising resilient children, and the importance of finishing what you start. Here's what research and observation highlight about: Evidence suggests that 82% of adults believe their parenting style was influenced by the way they were raised. Studies show that roughly 95% of adopted children develop secure attachments with their adoptive families.  Research estimates that 80% of internationally adopted children benefit from open conversations about their adoption story. www.thedadedge.com/535 www.thedadedge.com/alliance https://thedadedge.com/bark  catwatters.com rickywatters.com @rickywatters  @officialrickywatters @rickywatters https://www.linkedin.com/in/rickywatters/

He knows full well that we were just a phone call away and less than an hour away if we are needed, and that he can reach out to us for any need he has. I was not ready for this. It bummed me out and made me sad. One day it was hitting me especially hard. I was super proud of him and his independent spirit, but I was missing my boy. In that moment of reflection, I realized that I'd done the same thing when I was his age. Dr. Brandon Jennings is a clinician, educator, father, and founder of Abilyn Consulting, with over a decade of experience transforming systems and lives alike. In this powerful and vulnerable conversation, we talk about healthy masculinity, emotional intelligence, fatherhood, and why knowing yourself is the first—and most important—step to leading others well. From corporate strategy sessions to parenting teenage daughters, Brandon leads with presence, not performance. His story is a masterclass in what it means to show up with self-awareness and humility across every area of life.Too often, men are stuck on autopilot, shaped by unexamined habits, cultural expectations, and outdated models of masculinity. Brandon challenges that narrative—not just in theory, but in practice. He shares personal stories of navigating a marriage where his wife's voice is the opposite of his own, working with emotionally intelligent men misaligned in rigid workplaces, and learning to parent with intention—not just instinct. We also unpack the 5 Voices framework, a tool that has radically transformed how I teach, lead, and relate to others. This episode is an invitation to pause, reflect, and start the work of leading from wholeness. Ever feel like your past is holding you back as a dad? You're not alone—and you're not disqualified. This week, we sit down with a very special guest and new friend of the show, Sammy Perez. He's a husband, father of four, and national voice for second chances through his work at Prison Fellowship. Sammy's story is raw and real. From time behind bars to meeting Jesus in a prison cell and even finding his own father figure, his testimony will move you, but what God has done in his life since then and the work that has been done in his family is where the real story begins. We talk about: What it means to father with grace instead of guilt Why humility is a dad's greatest strength Breaking generational cycles (even if you were never shown how) The kind of legacy Jesus can build from failure Whether you grew up with the wrong role models—or none at all—this episode is a hope-filled reminder that it's never too late to begin again. Whenever you feel like life is running you over and it seems impossible that God could use you any more, soak in this reminder from Sammy: "I was created for more than this." This one is for the dad who feels disqualified. God's not done with you, even if there are times you might feel like you're done with him.   Check out more of Sammy's story here Learn about Sammy's work with Prison Fellowship here   -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Shop Range Leather and get 15% OFF with code MJ15 Grab some fresh beans! https://rangecoffee.com/   Join the Fatherhood Guard as a monthly donor: https://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/     Buy Kent's latest book: Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon  Read the new State Of Biblical Fatherhood report here: http://manhoodjourney.org/sobf Find tools to share the report here: https://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools   Have a topic you want us to touch on? He's spoken at parenting and men's events. He's authored four books. The first, Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You, was written to help men learn how to find mentors and wise counsel. The latest, Don't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to Quit, aims to help dads stay present in their roles as fathers and husbands even when they feel like giving up. Kent's life has been radically affected by godly mentors and his lovely wife, April. They have been married thirty years and have five sons and one daughter-in-law. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Lawson Brown is husband to his high school sweetheart, a father of two young adult daughters, has been a business leader since 1995, and is a former Marine. He served as a small group leader for teenage boys for many years, helped start the Christian media ministry City on a Hill Productions, then later Sanctuary – a new church in Kennesaw, GA – where he served as its leader for Men's Ministry. Lawson's journey of faith has always been centered in a grounding from his wife, Audrey, and supported throughout by many men whom he's found as brothers along the way. His family is nearing an empty nest phase and has recently relocated to the Florida Gulf Coast beaches area.

The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)

Have you ever asked yourself? Am I helping my kids find meaningful ways to spend their time beyond their screens? When was the last time I encouraged or joined my child in an offline activity? Do I ever ask my children to share what they experience online? Today's fathers are raising kids in a world vastly different from their own upbringing. In this episode of The Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner sits down with son Ethan to hash out the stark contrasts between “growing up with TV” and “growing up with a smartphone.”   Larry and Ethan dive deep into how social media impacts motivation, mental health, and connection within families, exploring why “doom scrolling” can leave kids feeling depressed and stuck. They discuss generational changes, the pressure to always be connected, the fleeting nature of “streaks” on Snapchat, and—importantly—how open, non-judgmental conversation can bridge the gap between parents and children. With practical insights, plenty of laughs, and a heartfelt wrap-up, this is a must-hear for any dad (or mom) looking for more connection with their kids. So whether you're struggling with technology at home, wondering how to talk to your kids about the pressures they face, or just looking for real-world dad wisdom and relatability, you're in the right place. Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: Understanding the Lure: Social reels are engineered for those instant dopamine hits, but they also make it harder for our kids to generate their own ideas for what to do with their downtime. Pressure Is Real: Not just on girls, but on young men too — from gym culture to physique expectations, today's teens feel the spotlight to “measure up” in ways we never had to. Screen Time Isn't Innocent: Endless scrolling can leave kids (and adults!) feeling drained and blue. Sometimes, all it takes is a thoughtful check-in (with options!) to break the cycle. Modeling Matters: Whether it's respect, discipline, or health, what we do still means more than what we say. Connection Beats Correction: When we bark “put the phone down!” we might be missing the calls for actual connection. Ethan shares, sometimes our kids just want us to start a real conversation, not hand them a to-do list or a lecture. This episode is a must-listen for any parent struggling to bridge the growing digital divide at home. So grab your headphones, and get ready to rethink how you connect with your own kids—one legendary day at a time. Here's what research and observation highlight about psychological and social impacts of smartphone and technology use on teenager and parents Studies show that 78% of teens feel anxious when they're separated from their phones. Studies show that roughly 84% of Parents Say Technology Makes Parenting More Challenging than When They Were Kids. About 52% of Adolescents Report Feeling ‘Left Out' if They Don't Have a Smartphone or Social Media. www.thedadedge.com/mastermind www.1stphorm.com/products/1st-phorm-energy

God is raising up men to walk in their identity as fathers who lead with strength, compassion, and spiritual authority. In a time when fatherhood has been diminished or distorted, the church is being called to restore its true purpose and power. This message invites men to be healed, equipped, and reestablished as anchors in both their homes and the house of God.

Blaine shares the life lessons his son have taught him. After that we talk about his transition from college to the NFL. Blaine talks about what he is most proud of in his football career. Next we talk about his sports broadcasting career and how he got into that career field. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About Blaine Bishop Blaine Bishop had a very successful 10-year career in the NFL. With the Oilers he became an anchor on the defense. Plus he is a fan favorite known as the “Hit-Man” because of his hard-hitting play. When the team moved to Nashville as the Tennessee Titans, Bishop and his accompanying defense took the team to new heights, becoming the pinnacle of NFL defenses. The eighth-round pick earned four Pro Bowls in his nine years with the Titans; helping the team win their first AFC Championship Game and advance to the Super Bowl. In addition, Bishop earned Pro-Bowl starts in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2000 and a three-time All-Pro selection in 1995, 1996, and 2000. Bishop is still widely recognized as the NFL's premier hitting safety during his tenure with the Oilers/Tennessee Titans. Therefore, Bishop's NFL career will be remembered as one of perseverance and a work ethic that was admired not only by his team, but by his opponents. After retiring from his playing career, Bishop went straight into sportscasting.  He has a successful career starting at NewsChannel5, NFL Network and Titans Radio, and now on Nashville's “104.5 the Zone” where he can be heard as part of their Wake Up Zone Morning Show. Bishop is married to wife Cella of 20 years. In addition, they have one son, Chayce. Make sure you follow Blaine on Instagram at @blainebishop23. Porn, apps, and missing fathers created a male crisis of loneliness. Here, ManTalks podcast host Connor Beaton breaks down the data and offers solutions.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1178What We Discuss with Connor Beaton:Male loneliness epidemic: 15% of men report having no close friends (up from 3% in 1990), and 28% of men aged 18-24 have no close friends. This represents a massive social crisis.Fatherless homes crisis: 43% of US children live without their father. This correlates with 90% of homeless youth, 85% of behavioral disorders, 85% of youth in prison, and 90% of repeat arsonists.Porn addiction epidemic: Starting as young as 9-11 years old, chronic porn use creates desensitization, erectile dysfunction, unrealistic expectations, and replacement of real relationships.Collapse of male spaces: Traditional male-oriented spaces like Boy Scouts have disappeared, leaving young men without mentorship or models for healthy masculinity.Connor Beaton recommends that men spend two nights per week with male friends for optimal mental health. Building real friendships through taking social risks — joining teams, starting conversations — combats loneliness. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Former NFL Linebacker Will Compton presents a Bussin’ With The Boys production, For The Dads! As a father of two, Will knows how hard the job of a dad can be. Thus he created a safe space for dads to come together and talk about the insane stuff that we see and deal with every day. He is joined by Sherman Young, whose first born is just days away, so Will share the highs and lows of having your first child. Sherm, understandably nervous and anxious to start his journey into fatherhood, confides in Will his excitement and trepidations for the arrival of his daughter, Scarlett. Will starts out by throwing around names for the For The Dads community. Then Sherm talks to Will about his worries regarding getting enough sleep once Scarlett is born. Plus, Will talks Sherm through delivery room do's and don’ts and Sherm gets emotional talking about the pending arrival of his daughter. The boys take a call from a disappointed Husker Girl Dad, and Will devises a plan to help his daughter understand jerseys aren’t just for boys. For the message of the week, Will delivers a "letter to Sherm" welcoming him into “The Fatherhood.” We hope you enjoy! Let us know in the comments what you'd like to see more of. Hosted by Will Compton–NFL Vet, creator of Bussin' With the Boys, and proud dad of two. This show isn’t about expert advice and how fatherhood is the greatest thing on earth—it’s about embracing the love and suck of parenthood every day. From balancing work and family to battling the mental load, fears, and the moments that wreck you in the best way, we dive into it all with honesty, vulnerability, and a sense of humor. Cause at the end of the day... us dads have no idea what we're doing. Alongside Will is his producer Sherman Young, a soon-to-be dad who’s currently enjoying his last few months of uninterrupted sleep and freedom. Together, they’ll break down everything that can go right and wrong (...usually wrong) when you bring tiny humans into this world. Expect funny parenting stories, laughs, call-ins, advice, weekly themes, and the kind of conversations you’d have over a cold beer in the garage. Whether you’re raising teens or still Googling “how to install a car seat,” For the Dads is the ultimate podcast for dads who are in it, about to be in it, or just trying to do their best while screwing it up along the way. ----- FOLLOW THE BOYS Instagram: / bussinwtb Twitter: / bussinwtb Facebook: / bussinwtb LISTEN iTunes: http://bit.ly/BWTB_Apple Spotify: http://bit.ly/BWTB_Spotify ----- SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
