What do maternal tropes, mediocre men, and magical possession all have in common? In this "Prof Responses" episode, Professor Julian Wamble returns to unpack the post-episode chats on two very different figures: Minerva McGonagall and Quirinus Quirrell. Was McGonagall really written as a maternal figure—or have we reimagined her to reflect a world Rowling couldn't envision? And what do we do with Quirrell, a Ravenclaw who might've been smart enough to find Voldemort but foolish enough to wear him like a backpack? From challenging the “mom or mess” dichotomy to breaking down the blurry lines between agency and possession, this episode dives into how fandom, canon, and cultural context shape the way we read these characters. And yes, favoritism, ambition, and the overconfidence of mediocre white men all make an appearance. As always, stay critical while keeping it magical!

What are the benefits of a non-human-centric approach to Divination? Firenze also ups Harry's cool factor considerably. Two members of the DA can now produce full Patronuses! We examine their meaning, including bringing back a revelation from Micah that's nearly 20 years old (our minds are still blown.) What's the deal with Dobby's loyalties? Why can Umbridge command him not to speak? We examine Draco's choice to apprehend Harry versus later choices he makes in the books. What is the timeline of events surrounding Umbrage, and “the sneak”'s confession? How does Fudge get to Hogwarts so quickly?! What makes Marietta cave? On today's episode of The Literary Life podcast, Angelina and Thomas continue their series on Flannery O'Connor with a discussion of her short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” After sharing their commonplace quotes, Angelina explains why she chose this particular story to go over on the podcast. She and Thomas then go over the characters in the family and the dynamics at play. Some of the ideas they talk about in this story are the appearance of respectability, the sentimental view of the “Old South,” the medieval and Sophoclean elements in the story, superficial Christianity versus nihilism, and so much more. They wrap up this episode with more thoughts on O'Connor's use of violence as a means of grace and how her stories can open people's eyes to their own depravity. If you are interested in learning more about Flannery O'Connor, you can purchase Angelina's previously recorded class, The Redemptive Vision of Flannery O'Connor. Now is the time to sign up for the upcoming summer classes and webinars at The House of Humane Letters. Some of the classes highlighted in this episode are Angelina's next installment in her series of classes on Harry Potter and Thomas' class on five famous figures of the Victorian era. The boys start off the episode strong chatting about hacked uni group chats, the etiquette in greeting high school alum in the wild, and long distance partners mooching long-term accomodation rent free (literally). We round off the logue with an impromptu #AskTCB where we answer some of the burning questions you guys have asked over Instagram - be sure to follow us on @criticalbanter to get your submissions in for next time. The game this week we bring back the “Letter Game” - where the boys name a word that begins with the first letter and ends with the second letter Sen gives them. After the sheer simplicity of the first rendition of this game, we add an additional rule where the word must be more than 4 letters.Second segment of the week is another returning segment "Blind Ranking" - where we rank random top 5s without knowing the rest of the list. We cover some outrageous topics such as Harry Potter characters on how racist we think they are, various 'Jacks', Premier League wingers, Australian CEOs on how fast we think they'd be at a 100m race - and so much more.___________________________________________________________FULL PODCAST EPISODES

In what may be the most socially conscious episode of APNC ever, the gang talks Adolescence, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and Episode 4 of The Last of Us Season 2. We've been waiting weeks for Andrew to finish Adolescence and the time has arrived! With the whole gang together, it was quite the discussion. As you'd expect, they talked about the technical marvel that this show is, but they also dove into the sociological aspects of this show. Adolescence was created to start a dialogue and it certainly did! Lots of opinions here from all sides of the issue and all in all a great discussion! Next up, Lauren got to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. It was a show she'd never intended to see, but with a friend in town from the UK, she bit the bullet and went. Long story short, she loved it. It's a technical marvel and a solid story with very sly undertones that, again, spark a sociological debate among the group. Also, much to Kevin's surprise, this show is NOT a musical! Lauren ducks out and leaves the guys along to discuss one of the more pivotal episode of The Last of Us. We see Issac's turn from FEDRA to the WLF, secrets are revealed, and love blossoms. It's another great episode of a great series and we see Isabella Merced once again just eat up screen time. If you aren't watching or are behind, it really is time you fixed that. This show is crushing it. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week!

go [ɡəʊ]v. Let's go to the park this weekend. The traffic light turned green, so we can go now. girl [ɡɜːl]n. The girl with long hair is my classmate. She wants to be a scientist when she grows up, just like the girl in the book. I was just gonna go outside for some fresh air. You want to come? You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl?你可能会想,这个从哈利波特里走出的姑娘是谁?I was the only girl on the team.

What if the villain wasn't overtaken—but offered himself up? In this episode of Critical Magic Theory, Professor Julian Wamble dives into the sweaty, stammering chaos of Professor Quirrell—and the dangerous audacity that lies beneath it. Often remembered as little more than a jittery man in a turban, Quirrell is actually one of the clearest cautionary tales in the Wizarding World: a man who gave Voldemort room on the back of his head in exchange for the illusion of power. From Ravenclaw ego to radical insecurity, we unpack what happens when ambition meets delusion—and why Quirrell might not be possessed, but willing. Plus, a warm welcome to our newest Patreon Deep Divers: Addy, Rachel, and Nicole! Your support keeps this world spinning and these conversations growing—thank you for diving deep with us.Be on the lookout for the Lockhart survey! Til then, be critical and stay magical my friends!

But let's face it, it's not easy watching from the sidelines! Shockingly, Snape comes the closest he ever has to actually caring about teaching Harry Occlumency, but... of course... has to have the last laugh! We draw comparisons between Lupin teaching Harry the Patronus Charm and Snape teaching Harry Occlumency. Should Harry be farther along given he's been at this for two months? This week on The Literary Life podcast, Angelina and Thomas bring us the first of a two-part series on the oft-requested, oft-misunderstood author, Flannery O'Connor. They begin by sharing their commonplace quotes for this week, which leads into the topic of O'Connor, the controversial mid-century southern American author. Angelina gives us a look at Flannery's early life and education, then her adult life and writing career. She also talks about southern culture and Christianity, as well as ways in which O'Connor's work is misunderstood by so many people. Thomas highlights the genre of Southern Gothic literature, and Angelina pushes back on that oversimplification of O'Connor, arguing that she is actually writing in the medieval tradition. Join us back here next week as we discuss O'Connor's short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” Now is the time to sign up for the upcoming summer classes and webinars at The House of Humane Letters. Some of the classes highlighted in this episode are Angelina's next installment in her series of classes on Harry Potter and Thomas' class on five famous figures of the Victorian era. To view the full show notes for this episode, including links to books mentioned, as well as commonplace quotes and this week's poem, please visit https://theliterary.life/276.

Space: the final frontier. Our Prime Directive: to boldly examine what Harry Potter has in common with Star Trek. Hosts Katy and Emily and producer Laurie have found themselves making Star Trek references on past episodes and realized that while Harry Potter is often compared to Star Wars, the future United Federation of Planets is less commonly put in dialogue with the wizarding world. We explore why that is and what looking at Potter and Trek side by side can uncover. Star Wars may be the more obvious point of comparison because it is a mythic story with fantasy elements and a hero's journey, but Trek, like Potter, deals with issues of prejudice, cultural relativism, fascism, justice, and institutional corruption. The magical world and the scientifically advanced society of Trek still have problems. We discuss which Star Trek series is the most like Potter and why it's Deep Space Nine. We compare the loathsome characters Dolores Umbridge and Kai Winn, the troublesome ones Peeves and Q, and the self-sacrificing nonhumans Dobby and Data. Both series also have mirrors (literal or figurative), time travel, and explorations of the past, even though Trek is set centuries in the future. Another important theme is the power of friendship - something that can transcend time, species, and genre. Live long and prosper, listeners!

Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. Andrew, Eric, Laura, Micah, and Slug Club guest Katie dig in, because it's time for Chapter 25 of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Welcome Slug Club member, Katie! The hosts wish to reassert their disavowal of J.K. Rowling for her role in making women less safe in the U.K. Please visit GLAAD's amazing page for links including FAQs, resources, and tips for allies. Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 25: The Beetle at Bay. MuggleCast last discussed this chapter on Episode 462! Harry's feelings toward his fellow students in light of the Azkaban breakout headlines have us once more feeling like we are living in the books today. The Ministry's control of information and issuance of propaganda, the extent which is confirmed in this chapter, is massive but not perfect. Some who look deeper are beginning to see the cracks in the facade. Umbridge's power grabs are becoming unenforceable. The hosts discuss how her main goal appears to be to frighten and dissuade dissenters, even among the staff. Harry and students are impressed by Neville's recent hard work in the D.A. This reminds us about when we made the "Neville Gets Swole" Spotify playlist, perfect for your summertime runs and workouts! Is Hermione single-handedly changing the course of the Wizarding world? We think so. Is there anything the students can/should be doing about Hagrid and his probation? Or is his behavior just too weird, and the students too buried in coursework? Ron has a fair idea, but Hermione shuts him down cold. We hold a memorial service for Ron's strategical aptitude subplot from Book 1. In what ways was "Madame Puddifoot's" NOT the perfect Valentine's spot, and whose fault is it that Harry and Cho's date is a disaster? Was it doomed from the start? Is Rita Skeeter looking for redemption, or just some hot goss? Odds & Ends asks why Ron, Fred or George do not seem to know about Antonin Dolohov's connection with their uncles, nor do they mention it. Most #RealTalk moment of the week? Hosts weigh in.
