One of the few positive aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic was a renewed interest in outdoor exercise. Certainly, driven by necessity during that period of time, it has still persisted as a viable environment to engage a variety of individuals in various types of physical activity and exercise. Indeed, anyone who has any time being physically active outdoors knows the benefits extend far beyond just physical exertion. The unique benefits of movement outdoors, and more specifically, outdoor recreation, will be the topic of conversation with our guest in episode 96, Jeannette Stawski, the Executive Director of the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (or AORE). In this discussion we'll not only touch on the unique physical and mental health benefits of outdoor recreation, but we'll also talk about it as a viable means for reducing accessibility barriers to being physically active.  At the very core of this discussion is the need for fitness professionals to continue to push outside of their typical comfort zone of indoor exercise and consider how to leverage the outdoors as a “big green gym.” Beyond that, it is clear from this conversation with Jeannette that fit pros need to consider how they can best collaborate with the outdoor recreation sector to create synergistic relationships that foster greater health within local communities. Skilled in coalition building, solving difficult problems, and building oil and gas companies, Mike is a strong entrepreneurial professional with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) focused in Psychology from East Central University. A 40 year industry veteran, Mike sees the oil and gas industry, at least in the conventional vertical well space, as offering the greatest return on investment in the American economy. Michael (Mike) Cantrell was born and raised in Oklahoma, where his family has strong ties to the oilfield. Cantrell's grandfather was a driller in the 1920's, eventually starting his own business in the 1950's, which Cantrell's father joined a few years later. In 1968, his father shifted into the production side of the business, where Cantrell gained hands-on experience in the field, accompanying his father in business from an early age. Cantrell attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While Cantrell was, and still is, keenly interested in psychology, he wanted a career in which he could work for himself and decided to continue on the family legacy in the petroleum industry. In 1975, Cantrell started Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation, an Ada, Oklahoma based oil and gas exploration and production company specializing in enhancing production in more mature formations, serving as President until 2000. That year, Cantrell sold Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation and a few months later, founded Cantrell Investments LLC, an oil and gas investment company, with assets primarily in Oklahoma., Texas and Kansas. Around that time, Cantrell decided to leave his longtime home in Oklahoma and relocated to Plano, Texas, just outside Dallas. A few short years later, in 2006, he moved back to Oklahoma. In 2009, Cantrell accepted a consulting position with Continental Resources, where he was an integral part of building the company's Government Relations Division, eventually serving as Vice President of Governmental and Regulatory Affairs. While at Continental, Cantrell maintained his oil and gas interests and upon leaving the company in March 2013, shifted his focus back to Cantrell Investments. As a longtime veteran, Cantrell notes that this industry is "an exciting place to work," crediting his dedicated employees - many of whom have been with him for years, if not decades - for their team's overall success. He also points out that it is an added benefit to have assets performing for you, and in turn generating profit, even while you sleep! Even though he has no shortage to choose from, Cantrell easily considers his greatest accomplishment to be raising two motivated children - both successful in their chosen fields - who he claims are even smarter than their dad. In fact, both his children have taken a page from their father's book in some way - his daughter is a political consultant and his son a fourth generation oilman. And though each have their own, independent companies, Cantrell has also worked closely over the years on joint ventures and projects with both his father and brother. In his free time, you will most likely find Cantrell on his Harley Davidson, whether he's traveling to the corners of the United States or just taking a quick ride. Cantrell is also very active in industry organizations, and serves on the Board of Directors of: Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, The Domestic Energy Producers Alliance, The Council for a Secure America, Citizens Bank of Ada, and is the Vice Chairman of Oklahomans for Lawsuit Reform. Additionally, Cantrell is the Chairman of the National Stripper Well Association, and is a longtime member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers. Cantrell adds that he has sincerely enjoyed working with the Alliance, saying, "I have never felt as effective in Washington D.C. as I did when accompanying Alliance leadership" to the U.S. Capitol earlier this year. In this episode of Creating a New Healthcare, Dr. Zeev Neuwirth interviews Sami Inkinen, founder & CEO of Virta Health.  Sami’s story is remarkable, and remarkably disruptive to healthcare. There are actually 3 stories rolled up into this podcast: (1) the story of Sami Inkinen, (2) the story of the ketogenic nutritional approach (low carb/high fat diet), and (3) most importantly, from our perspective, the story of how disrupt-able healthcare delivery is when you combine cutting edge medical science with leading digital technology. Sami, an immigrant from Finland with a physics background and an MBA from Stanford, co-founded, took public, and then sold Trulia, an online real estate marketplace, for $3.4 Billion. He did this before he was 40 years old. Then he discovered that despite being a world-class athlete (literally—he won a world triathlon championship in his age group), he had pre-diabetes.  After researching on his own, Sami connected with two highly published, world-class nutritional scientists who had been studying the ketogenic nutirtional approach for decades.  One being Steve Phinney, a Stanford-trained physician with a PhD in nutrition from MIT; and the other being Jeff Volek PhD, one of the most highly published researchers in the ketogenic genre, with over 300 peer-reviewed publications.  The three decided to merge cutting-edge medical science with Sami's software and technology background.  And, Virta Health was born—an online specialty medical clinic that reverses type 2 diabetes, without medication or surgery.  Their goal - that is, Virta's corporate mission- is to reverse diabetes in over 100 million people by 2025!  There are many remarkable aspects to this story, but just keep in mind that Sami is a guy who had no medical/clinical background, and within a couple of years has a company that is licensed to provide specialty medical care in all 50 states within the U.S.  It is our belief that this is not an aberration; but rather an emerging trend that will continue to accelerate as more entrants from the digital technology world make their way into healthcare delivery, and begin to collaborate closely with evidence-based authorities in clinical medicine.  [For further evidence of this, you can view podcast episode #16 with Aaron Martin at Providence Health St Joseph; or podcast episode #12 with Sean Duffy at Omada Health; or podcast episode #11 with Eyal Gura at ZebraMed; or podcast episode #6 with Joanna Strober at Kurbo - as other brilliant examples of this trail blazing trend.]  Getting back to Sami & Virta Health, the immediate and understandable response to hearing about this might be skepticism.  How can you meaningfully connect with patients and treat them effectively via an online service?  In this interview Sami shares some early results and outcomes that might surprise you.  Virta Health has a Net Promoter Score (broadly used measure of customer satisfaction & loyalty) of 70—on par with Apple, The university-based research studies Virta has conducted to date are showing type 2 diabetes reversal rates of nearly 60%, with adherence of over 80%.  It’s still early on, but the results, to date, are promising.  And the trail that Sami - and others like him - are blazing, is one that would be very worthwhile listening to and learning from.  Disclosure: Dr. Zeev Neuwirth sits on the Industry Advisory Board for Virta.  He has been collaborating (non-paid) with Sami Inkinen and his colleagues, even prior to the launch of Virta - driven by a genuine professional and personal desire to improve the care of people with diabetes.  Dr. Neuwirth wasn’t going to post this interview publicly because of concerns related to a perceived conflict of interest; but he felt this story was too important not to share.  Dr. Neuwirth holds stock options in Virta; but receives no payment or other remuneration for this podcast episode, or any other discussion of Virta.

Speaker Luca Belgiorno-Nettis Type Live Conversation About this conversation When ‘Starship Enterprise’ took off 250 years ago, the middle classes began to make the modern world with accelerating speed and yes, it must be said, with some adverse consequences. But there is no better spaceship, no better sputnik, known to mankind. Working and trading are fundamental to human relations. But business doesn’t usually factor in negative effects to the community at large – what economists euphemistically call ‘externalities’. For example, cities need open space, which business doesn’t address. Therefore ‘Steamship Democracy’ is needed alongside ‘Enterprise’. It’s a steamship, because it’s slower, but it actually needs to be faster, to anticipate business and promote the common good. Conversation notes - Why Starship Enterprise and Steamship Democracy? - What’s wrong with politics? - Why contemporary elections are throwing up the least disliked politicians - The reasons behind suboptimal government - Why sortition or a jury system are the remedies to our current political problem - What are citizen juries? - How can we make politicians accountable? - Should there be a trial before implementing? The rule of law, the separation of powers, the freedom of the press, the freedom of association etc.. But I think the lack of respect for politicians is the biggest single concern. They've got over 2,500 developers and designers in their network.  They've screened them extensively so that you get to work with the top 3% of developers and designers. So basically what happens is that you let Toptal know what type of developer or designer you're looking for, they understand your business and technical requirements and they search for the right person for you. You don't have to do all the screening and interviews that you normally would and they make it really easy for you. You can even do part time hires that are a few hours a week or full time hires as well.  If you want to get connected to them, send me a note at  laura@startupgrind.com and I can personally introduce you to my friend Nelson. He's a VP at Toptal who will make sure you get an amazing experience.
