Trump and DOGE have dropped the hammer on USAID, and the political left is predictively losing their minds. According to Trump administration officials, roughly 20,000 federal workers have accepted the "buyout" offer from President Donald Trump, but they are expecting that number to explode as the deadline to accept the "buyout" gets closer. New York Attorney General Letitia James warned hospitals in the state against canceling appointments for transgender procedures on minors after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to protect children from surgical mutilation and chemical castrations. Rep. Ilhan Omar gave an interview where she "appeared" to instruct illegal aliens to refrain from answering questions from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Border Czar Tom Homan said that if New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that's a violation and he will seek prosecution. Joe Biden has signed with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a mega talent and sports agency. In this week's episode, we're re-airing one of our top episodes from last year with Kat Hantas. Kat is the co-founder of 21 Seeds Tequila, one of the fastest-growing flavored tequilas. Kat's had an interesting journey - from thinking she wanted to be a doctor, then pivoting to the entertainment industry, and then being a stay-at-home mom for many years. She never would have thought that she'd launch a business in the liquor industry. It wasn't until she started noticing that her evening wine wasn't making her feel good and her doctor recommended that she move away from fermented spirits and into distilled spirits. In the process of exploring tequila options, Kat came up with the idea to start 21 Seeds Tequila - a fresh natural tequila made with real fruit. She was making this in her kitchen for years, until one day the demand became so much that her friend inspired her to start selling the bottles. This sparked the idea and Kat co-founded the business with her sister and good friend to make it a reality. The business was acquired by Diageo in just three years in March 2022 and the deal marked one of the largest female-founded liquor acquisitions to-date.In this podcast episode, Kat opens up about her journey with imposter syndrome and shares tips on overcoming it in her career in the entertainment industry and entrepreneurial ventures. She discusses her transition from being a stay-at-home mom to launching 21 Seeds, highlighting the challenges of finding a distillery, creating product-market fit, and building a supportive network. Last week, Variety published an article that laid out a behind the scenes look at growing issues and long term concerns at Marvel Studios and Disney regarding the present and future of the MCU. If you follow this show, you are likely up on many of these points but here are a few that caught our eye. This week's new MCU entry The Marvels had several behind the scenes issues. The budget for the film was $250 million dollars and is tracking for a low opening weekend as we've discussed previously. Lengthy reshoots were needed to bring the film together and director Nia DaCosta also relocated and started working on another project during post-production, which is uncommon in Hollywood, especially with a film of this budget size. However, DaCosta recently responded to the article, stating that this was due to delays in The Marvels release date and was not a controversial move with the studio. Many of the recent VFX issues are attributed to poor script writing and planning. VFX artists report that they are asked to pivot sometimes suddenly to correct or add VFX late in production due to script rewrites. For example, the first episode of She-Hulk, which was originally a later episode in the season, was flipped to the first episode and ended up costing $25 million dollars for that single episode due to the rewrite. Blade continues to have serious script issues. The script has been rewritten multiple times and lead actor Mahershala Ali nearly left the project on multiple occasions. One rewrite of the script was described as "female-centric, Blade relegated to the fourth lead, and full of life lessons." Marvel is still looking to make the film, but "on a budget of less than $100 million dollars." Marvel Studios has had talks about bringing back the original six Avengers actors for a new Avengers film to revive excitement in the franchise, despite the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow. And now there are rumors that Robert Downey, Jr. has agreed to another film. Marvel is still undecided about how to handle the future of Jonathan Majors in the MCU. Discussions have ranged from recasting him to pivoting away from Kang the Conqueror entirely to another villain such as Doctor Victor Von Doom. With Majors' case now going to trial and with the writer's strike preventing script rewrites for so long, the studio has yet to commit to a path forward. The Creative Artists Agency (CAA) dropped Majors pre-arrest due to "brutal conduct," which seems to indicate that Marvel Studios might want to move on from him, regardless of the legal situation. There is still optimism around the future of Marvel Studios, but certain changes in the formula are clearly needed. In more Marvel news, the franchise giant is venturing into more mature territory with Echo, which unveiled a moody and violent trailer last Friday. The new series will be the MCU's first TV-MA rating and the first to debut simultaneously on Disney+ and sister streaming service Hulu. Both Charlie Cox and Vincent D'ONofrio will appear in the show starring as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fiske/Kingpin, respectively. Star Alaqua Cox will reprise her Hawkeye role as Maya Lopez/Echo. Also of note, Echo will premiere under a new banner called Marvel Spotlight; complete with a new intro scored by Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino and a new logo. This new sub-category of Marvel will focus on standalone properties versus series and movies that connect to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Spotlight gets its name from an anthology comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971, which featured new characters that readers didn't have to fully commit to over several issues. Echo is setting the stage for a lot of potential trends with Marvel Studios…

While NFT projects grew in popularity, so too did brand recognition — and the interest of talent representatives to sign them on. United Talent Agency (UTA) was among the first in August of 2021, when it signed CryptoPunks and Meebits creators Larva Labs, followed by Deadfellaz in April of this year. Other talent representatives got into web3 as well, such as Creative Artists Agency (CAA) signing on the NFT collector 0xb1 in October 2021 and even hiring a Chief Metaverse Officer in August of this year. But why did talent representatives like UTA sign on these NFT brands at all? Why do NFT brands need talent representation? To get to the heart of these questions, MK sat down with UTA's head of web3, Lesley Silverman. Silverman has been at UTA for the past seven years, educating artists on the utility of web3 and helping interested artists launch their web3 brand. Before joining UTA, Silverman worked as a fine arts lawyer, and she says this experience shaped how she lead UTA through the NFT space. Episode 80 of Season 4 of The Scoop was recorded remotely with The Block's MK Manoylov and Lesley Silverman, Head of Web3 at United Talent Agency. Nice guys finish first. Nez Balelo is a Major League Baseball super-agent, representing such players as Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels, Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona D-Back' Adam Jones and many more. Balelo also stands out as an anomaly. Raised in San Diego Ca, first-generation Portuguese descent where his family migrated from the Madeira Islands in Portugal and was raised in the Commercial fishing industry, Balelo would become a promising MLB infielder before a devastating accident cut short his playing days. Adversity and opportunity became the catalysts for Balelo positioning himself as one of the most humble, venerable, and successful professionals in all of sports. After a horrific accident took him permanently out of the lineup, Nez focused on his entrepreneurial skills and opened up a development baseball school outside of Los Angeles called West Coast Baseball School. At the same time accepted a job with the Atlanta Braves in a Hybrid development, Scouting and consulting role. After a 10-year run working for the Braves and learning the Organization business along with building and purchasing numerous baseball facilities, Balelo took his drive to another level and walked away from the Braves and Sold all of his schools and branding license and started a Sports Agency. Balelo brought with him several players who he developed during these years to start the Agency who all made it to the Major Leagues. After 3 years Balelo already established himself as a name in the Sports agency world having numerous first-round picks and players already entering into the Major Leagues, was asked to join IMG Sports group in a Senior Executive position which eventually moved over to CAA Entertainment to start the Sports group in 2006. As a major player with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Nez Balelo helps keep CAA Sports atop the standings in MLB player signings. When it comes to the dotted line, Nez is the penultimate example of how MLB players are represented and supported. Instilled with dedication and tenacity from working alongside his father, Balelo knows how ethics, mindset, commitment, and staying active play such a vital role in the prosperity of your organization that led him to the rightful place on Forbes “Most Powerful Sports Agents in the World” list.
David Freeman is the Co-Founder and Co-Head of the Digital Media department at leading entertainment and sports agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Prior to joining CAA, Freeman served as General Manager of MATTER, Edelman Sports and Entertainment Marketing. In 2003, he co-founded MATTER to forge and develop marketing partnerships for brands, entertainment companies, and content creators.
Remember the days when you could turn on the radio or television and all you expected was to be treated to great music or entertaining shows? It seems like a million years ago when Walter Cronkite and his peers just reported the facts without adding their take on what you should think of the news or calling people derogatory names. Our guests on this episode of Discover Lafayette are Jaci Russo and Craig Wall who were invited to discuss the merits of civil discourse in political conversations. Both guests were trained in the techniques of debate in high school and believe that the skills students learn in debate class prepares them for the rigors of life and the civic challenges that may be thrown their way! Jaci Russo is co-founder of Brand Russo in Lafayette, which she started in 2001. A brand strategist with more than 25 years of experience, Jaci began her career at Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in Los Angeles and has worked with top names in the entertainment industry. She has published several books on branding and provides media management for local, regional and national clients. Craig Wall is a history teacher and Speech and Debate coach at Teurlings Catholic High School. He has also been a radio DJ for the past 26 years and is currently a radio announcer at Mustang 107.1 and host of the Saturday morning “Country Roots” program. Craig has been named Teacher of the Year several times, first at Northside High, then Lafayette Parish High School Teacher of the Year, then Region IV High School Teacher of the Year, and a finalist for State High School Teacher of the Year. In 2017, Craig was named the Teurlings Catholic Teacher of the Year. Jaci and Craig were each inspired by teachers they had in high school. In Jaci's case, it was Judy Hadley at Lafayette High School, who is an icon in speech and debate circles and inducted in the Louisiana High School Speech League Hall of Fame in Advanced Policy Debate. Jaci jokingly recounted how Ms. Hadley was renowned for throwing shoes at students ("soft espadrilles, nothing hard") when they didn't follow directions. Jaci continued in debate in college and came in #7 in a national debate competition her freshman year. "I luckily had one of the greatest debate coaches of all time, Judy Hadley at Lafayette High School. She's retired now and lives in Florida. But her skills and knowledge and shoe throwing, she had a lot of encouraging shoe-throwing out.....Well, that's the real deal." Similarly, Craig was a shy student whose parents were shocked when he first took Speech as a student at Comeaux High. With the tools he learned in debate, he was able to step outside of himself and get over his fear of public speaking, learning how to analyze facts, prepare and present persuasive arguments for each side of an issue. He credits his acclaimed debate coach, Sandra Broussard, for all that he learned in high school that led him to experience great opportunities in life. "Working in speech and debate in high school allowed me to open up and to take a risk that Craig Wall wouldn't take. But the character I played could. From the interview, the actor's side, I switched over to forensics, public speaking, learning to write a good, persuasive speech and a researched debate case as well. Everything I've done is as a result of getting involved with debate." In today's political realm, public discourse has gotten totally divisive at the national level and this influence has unfortunately invaded local politics in ways never before experienced. With the popularity of talk radio dating back thirty years ago when Rush Limbaugh totally changed the way radio worked, and more recently, social media which is in everyone's back pocket and accessible 24/7, news has become personal to all of us. Facebook and other social media apps took off in 2008 and broke down all barriers in the ways people communicate and get their news. The insulation of being in private behind a keyboar...

Making it plain! It's Afronerd Radio and it's also our Grindhouse podcast airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern. And then there's the topics: DC Universe's Doom Patrol premiered its SECOND episode with Victor Stone a/k/a Cyborg making his TV live action debut; actor, Malik Yoba is reprising his role in the NY Undercover reboot at ABC-TV; more fallout over the Jussie Smollett alleged faux racial attack case (in the wake of a REAL white supremacist threat that was thwarted); black celebrity couple, Russell Wilson and singer, Ciara face online backlash for their mostly white employee photobombing selfie highlighting their new partnership with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA); but then that calls into question the dearth of black agents, doesn't it?; NPR highlights a new urb-alt rock performer from Kenya now residing in Minneapolis, JS Ondara; then there's the very expected remaining Marvel Netflix shows' (Punisher, Jessica Jones) cancellations; a faction of the internet are apparently shocked over a 48 year old Playboy interview with actor, John Wayne that put his biases on display (who didn't know this?); and is there a Captain Marvel bias on the part of some fanboys as we approach the film March 8th release? Afrofuture talk took place on CBS Morning this week; Lastly, thoughts about Jordan Peele's Twilight ZoneCBS All Access trailer. Call LIVE at 646-915-9620.

My favorite movies wouldn't exist without Michael Ovitz. Think: Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, Schindler's List! But he believes "great projects always surface." So I had him tell me about all the projects he worked with. And the talent (Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd and more). He told me how he left the mailroom of one talent agency to start his own. Which THEN became the biggest talent agency in Hollywood, Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Later on, Michael went on to become the #2 guy at Disney. Now, he has a bestselling book called, "Who Is Michael Ovitz?" with Michael Ovitz (@michaelovitz), Ben Horowitz (@bhorowitz), and Hanne Tidnam (@omnivorousread) When Michael Ovitz co-founded the Hollywood talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA), he turned a number of the entertainment industry's well-entrenched traditions on their head. The origin story of a16z (not coincidentally!) is not that dissimilar. So in this episode of the a16z Podcast, Ovitz and a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz talk with Hanne Tidnam about Ovitz' just-released book, Who is Michael Ovitz? -- and about how CAA transformed the power equation in Hollywood. The conversation covers everything from the history of the entertainment business -- the days of vaudeville and the Jack Warners and William Foxes and Jurassic Parks -- to what strategies guided the differentiation of the new kids on the block. There's lessons for other founders here, too, about culture, negotiation, and more.
