“The Lexico definition of emotion is "A strong feeling deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others."[22] Emotions are responses to significant internal and external events.[23] Emotions can be occurrences (e.g., panic) or dispositions (e.g., hostility), and short-lived (e.g., anger) or long-lived (e.g., grief).[24] Psychotherapist Michael C. Graham describes all emotions as existing on a continuum of intensity.[25] Thus fear might range from mild concern to terror or shame might range from simple embarrassment to toxic shame.[26] Emotions have been described as consisting of a coordinated set of responses, which may include verbal, physiological, behavioral, and neural mechanisms.[27] Emotions have been categorized, with some relationships existing between emotions and some direct opposites existing. What is the definition of self-expression? According to Lexico, self-expression is “the expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, especially in writing, art, music, or dance”. It is an important aspect of mental health because self-expression is an excellent way to find the real version of oneself, become more balanced, and lead a happier life. Reconnecting with your inner child can help you rediscover what you love to do as a result.We begin self-expressing in childhood but usually forget how freeing it is as we grow older. Caring too much about the result and acceptance by peers is to blame. Anna and Nina share some personal experiences from when they were little, and we learn that they have a creative background in dancing and singing, respectively. Both Anna and Nina still love to do intuitive movement between client sessions to release the tension and feel lighter. They discuss the misconception that you need to be good at something to fully enjoy it. Instead, focusing on getting the feelings out should be your goal. Being a little bit dramatic is also a form of self-expression, and these extreme emotions could be a way to open up a dialogue with people around you. Feeling all kinds of emotions is perfectly okay, and taking a day off to be sad might help you get better instead of keeping everything inside. Connecting with other creatives is a way to encourage you to accept self-expression as it is and do what you want in that particular moment. Just letting your feelings out without any objective in mind can be very freeing. You might feel a bit uncomfortable because, after all, you are creating something and might want to share it with the world later on. Honesty is the key here. Your work should reflect your intentions, and it will be evident if you created something to express your true feelings or made it for an audience. Anna and Nina firmly believe that every person has a creative streak, and chasing perfection could hinder your self-expression. According to the Lexico online dictionary, a coup is a sudden, violent and illegal seizure of power from a government. The coup in Mali which took place on 18th August 2020, is the third in Africa in the past three years (Sudan, 11th April 2019 and Zimbabwe, 15th November 2017). The African Union's position about unconstitutional changes in government has led some AfriCans to ask, whether it is the African Union's job "protect people from authoritarian regimes or to protect authoritarian regimes from their people?". On this episode, our guest, Dr Mohamed Diatta, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies notes among other things that to there is an urgent need to address the real feeling among African's that, political change can only occur through popular protests and military interference. Has the stock market reached a point of stabilization? Are the volatile swings up or down beginning to equalize? In this episode of Making Finance Fun, I’m going to do my best to answer that question. I’ll define what ‘stabilization’ means, look at how the S&P 500 and Dow Jones behaved in March-May, and address where we could go from here. After you hear the information I present, I’ll let YOU decide where the market stands. Outline of This Episode [2:00] What is the definition of stabilization? What IS the definition of ‘stabilization’? According to Lexico, stabilization is “The process of becoming or being made unlikely to change, fail, or decline.” When I look at the market, the question I ask myself is this: Has the insane volatility—big upswings and big downswings—stopped? Volatility is often viewed and referenced negatively. However, I do want to point out that volatility can also mean an upward spike—not just down.  Stock market behaviors in March, April, and May Although the Coronavirus pandemic technically started in February, I want to focus on how it impacted the market starting in March. The S&P 500 dropped 20% in March and the Dow Jones dropped 21%. Talk about a HUGE negative trend. From what I’ve read, it sounds like it was the worst-performing month of the stock market since the great depression. March brought wild swings in the market—sometimes 6–8% in a single day.  April seemed like a polar opposite to March, with both the S&P 500 and the Dow up 13%. It can be categorized as one of the best months we’ve had in 35–40 years. But the market was still quite volatile. The Monday before the CARES act was passed, the market anticipated that it wasn't going to pass and the market was DOWN. When the Senate passed the bill, the market had a huge upswing. Trillions of dollars were pumped into the economy.  May has been largely uneventful and relatively calm in day-to-day activity, with the S&P and Dow both up 3%. Here and there we learn more about the virus or receive some good news about potential vaccines and treatment. There have been a few trading days with swings of 3–4%.  Where will the stock market go from here? My opinion—NOT my prediction—is that wall street is waiting for a catalyst. Will the Fed send out another round of stimulus payments? Will a company come out with a proven vaccine? Will the relationship with China improve or deteriorate? We can’t forget a big election is coming up. The stock market is looking for the next big thing and will react accordingly. The month of May brought some market stabilization and we’ve seen less volatility. We may be moving in a positive direction. The US Senate passed a resolution with a bipartisan vote Thursday limiting US President Donald Trump's ability to order future strikes against Iran without first seeking Congress' explicit approval. This is being described as a pointed rebuke of the Trump administration's resistance to involving the legislature in foreign policy decisions.
