The neuropsychologist Bryan Kohberger's defense team hired to protect him documented something his family had been trying to address for years. Dr. Rachel Lawson Orr spent six sessions testing Kohberger, observing his behavior, and interviewing his parents and sisters. She found restricted affect, absent social smiling, poor reciprocity, impulsive tendencies, and a man who redirected every conversation to his own experience. His family described years of failed social coaching. Orr confirmed the pattern: rigid thinking, limited perspective-taking, and "overall poor" insight. Kohberger showed only fleeting awareness of his own role in situations, and only when directly confronted. The evaluation reveals eight total diagnoses, four previously undisclosed, including a teenage heroin addiction and anorexia. It also connects to forum posts attributed to Kohberger at sixteen, where a user cataloged his own symptoms and described hugging his family and seeing nothing. Understanding how Kohberger's mind works isn't the same as excusing what he did. He admitted to killing four people under oath. But the evaluation explains why the pattern hasn't changed: the petition, the prison interview, the claim that everyone else is the problem. Imagine waiting 530 days waiting for the trial of the man who groomed, controlled, strangled and assaulted you only to walk into court on day one and be told there would be no trial. Behind closed doors a plea deal was negotiated dramatically altering the outcome of the case, resulting in Robert Hastings walking free – no prison time.  Strangulation and coercive control are high risk behaviours correlating significantly with serious harm and femicide – yet far too often abusers are rarely charged. In the aftermath of the nationwide protests and the police action in Delhi on 20 July, several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court for enforcing fundamental rights against the State. These range from Junaid Malik's plea for wrongful detainment to Manoj Kumar Jha's petition seeking FIRs against police excesses and a Gurugram protester's plea over her pellet-gun injuries. Filing a petition in the Supreme Court is, however, only half the battle. Whether your petition gets a hearing depends on several moving parts: how quickly the registry processes defects in the case, whether a ‘mentioning' succeeds, how urgently you push to cure those defects and ultimately, whether the Court's docket has room for you. Should the president of Seattle’s teachers union keep her position? That’s the question on the minds of many local teachers and parents. Last week, parents of a student of Ibijoke Idowu began the process of pursuing a civil lawsuit against the teacher and the district, claiming she had physically harmed their child. This follows a Seattle Public Schools investigation, released in June, which concluded that Idowu “more likely than not” grabbed the student hard enough to cause bruising. Idowu was elected to lead the Seattle Education Association while she was on leave pending the results of this probe. Idowu has denied allegations of misconduct. He will spill all the tea in the coming weeks but for now just know that there are plans ahead to build on Black Studies outside of the confines of the university....but we have to hold to account those who pretend to be for racial justice and Black staff and students but then make decisions like cutting Black Studies and letting go of staff members. California's third-largest school district, Fresno Unified, is preparing for another significant decline in student enrollment, with new projections showing the district could lose nearly 1,200 students during the 2026-27 school year. The drop would exceed last year's loss and continue a trend that has been affecting the district for years. A group of Clovis Unified teachers has taken a major step toward forming a teachers union, potentially ending the district's 66-year history without a union representing classroom teachers. Why Bryan Kohberger's own words might sink the petition he just filed comes down to one moment: a judge asked him, under oath, if he was pleading guilty because he was guilty, and he said yes. Thirteen months after that plea, representing himself, Kohberger filed a handwritten petition for post-conviction relief in Ada County District Court. He told the New York Times his actual innocence is his truth and called investigators' account of the case a work of fiction. Before the filing reached anyone official, he called a reporter from a prison phone, and what came out of that call left the families of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin dealing with a scenario they were promised in writing would never reach them. The petition claims ineffective assistance of counsel, undisclosed evidence, and a distorted picture of what death row and a life sentence would actually look like, with threats and false promises blamed for the confession itself. He's also said he'd welcome the death penalty being sought again if this reaches trial. There's a procedural wrinkle most coverage has missed: the appeal waiver he signed never closed the door on challenging whether the plea itself was valid, and that's the entire premise of this filing. The Goncalves family answered within hours, taking the petition apart in detail. There was never a trial, never a cross-examination, and no motive on the record. We go through what he filed and the sentence working against him. None of it is decided yet.
