In this episode of The Leader's Notebook (Ep. 328), I begin a journey through the life of David, one of the most fascinating and complex people in Scripture. Before we ever get to Goliath, David's story is shaped by the world around him, from the era of the Judges and the rise of Saul to his unlikely family heritage through Rahab and Ruth. David was a shepherd boy from Bethlehem, yet God saw something in him that others could not see. We look at David's anointing by Samuel, his victory over Goliath, his rise as a military leader, and the growing jealousy of Saul. David's story reminds us that God's calling does not always make immediate sense, and that success, recognition, and even God's favor can create complicated seasons of testing. We also see the remarkable friendship of David and Jonathan and the supernatural moments that protected David when his life was in danger. As we begin this study, Psalm 23 gives us a beautiful glimpse of the heart of the man behind the history: “The Lord is my shepherd.” – Dr. Mark Rutland Chapters (00:00:03) - leaders notebook with Dr. Mark Rutland(00:02:48) - The Story of King David(00:12:07) - Samuel the Last Judge of Israel(00:19:29) - David the Lion in the King's Court(00:22:09) - Samuel: I'm Going to Take the Kingdom from Saul(00:26:18) - The Life of David(00:31:58) - In the Life of David(00:36:14) - The Battle of David vs Goliath(00:38:34) - Saul Says to David: Who Is That?(00:44:42) - David and the Philistines(00:46:47) - David's Decision to Kill Saul(00:53:44) - The Leader's Notebook

I was walking along the beach in Santa Cruz and two old dudes stopped to take a photo of me and my family. One of them said, "What an Indian summer." Haha, I had no idea what that meant. I Looked it up and it's that weird in-between period when summer is ending but fall hasn't really started yet. I got to thinking, that's kinda how life feels right now. This month I'm talking about building my own apps with AI, getting my hands dirty at AppSumo, growing TidyCal and SendFox again, raising two daughters, and trying to figure out how much work is actually enough. Everyone was told to adopt AI, tried it, got burned — so why do enterprise AI rollouts keep failing? Jonathan Green talks with organizational strategist Rob Lion about the real reasons big AI initiatives miss: unrealistic expectations set by the hype, skipping change management, and the employee mindset of "make my job easier, but not so easy that I'm replaceable." Key Takeaways: • Most enterprise AI failures are change-management failures, not tech failures • The "promise of the commercials" sets expectations the rollout can't meet • If you skip how you roll it out, you bypass the most common path to success • Employees quietly resist: "make my job easier — but not so easy I'm replaceable" • Teach people the why and the workflow, not just "what's an LLM" Notable Quotes: "Make my job easier — but not so easy that I'm replaceable." — Rob Lion "When someone doesn't know what direction they're heading, the rollout's already in trouble." — Rob Lion Connect with Rob Lion: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertlion Website: https://blackriverpm.com Enjoyed this? And you will never taste a thing. Because nobody is checking. Not the brands. Not the grocery store. Not the FDA, which sets no limit at all for heavy metals in coffee. In 2025, an independent lab ran 7,000 tests on 57 of the bestselling coffee brands in America and found acrylamide, glyphosate breakdown products, and heavy metals in every single sample. Dr. G investigated over 50 coffee companies looking for one that could actually hand him a lab report on the finished product. This is the one that passed. Dr. G breaks it down — in order: Take 1: "The mold can die in the roaster but the toxins survive" Ochratoxin A is the main mold toxin found in coffee and the World Health Organization has officially flagged it as potentially cancer-causing. Dr. G explains why your body holds mycotoxins for over a month and what that means if you are drinking poor quality coffee every single morning. Take 2: "There is no safe level of lead" Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic accumulate in your bones, kidneys, and brain for decades with almost no way for your body to eliminate them. Dr. G uses the bathtub analogy to explain exactly what is happening over years of daily exposure. Take 3: "Even organic coffee tested positive for glyphosate residue" The weed killer sprayed on coffee crops does not just affect your cells. It targets the bacteria living in your gut, disrupting the microbiome that governs your immune system, mood, and hormonal health. Dr. G explains why even the organic label does not guarantee you are safe. Take 4: "Bulletproof says their process is proprietary and won't share testing data" The brands that market themselves as clean and mold-free are not always showing their work. Dr. G names names and explains exactly what a trustworthy coffee company has to be willing to show you before it earns a place in your kitchen. Take 5: "Everyday Dose ran three independent randomized controlled trials on their own product" Almost no coffee company has ever done this. Dr. G breaks down what those trials actually found, including measurable improvements in sleep confirmed by Oura ring data, and explains why this is his number one coffee of 2026. In this episode, you will learn: • What ochratoxin A, heavy metals, and glyphosate are each doing inside your body with daily long term exposure, and why the damage is invisible until it is not • Why pairing l-theanine with caffeine produces focused calm instead of jitters and crashes, and what the research on alpha brain wave states actually shows • What lion's mane, chaga, and grass-fed collagen each contribute to the cup and why putting evidence-based ingredients into a daily ritual you are already doing is one of the most efficient health upgrades available Timestamps: 0:00 - Intro 1:00 - Mold Toxins in Coffee: What Ochratoxin A Does to Your Kidneys and Immune System 2:30 - Heavy Metals (Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic): No Safe Level — and the FDA Sets Zero Limits 4:30 - Glyphosate in Coffee: Why Even Organic Brands Tested Positive 6:30 - The 2025 Lab Study That Tested 57 Best-Selling Brands — and What They Found in All of Them 8:00 - Why Starbucks, Folgers and Dunkin Won't Hand You a Lab Report 8:45 - Even Bulletproof Says Their Process Is "Proprietary" — Here's What That Actually Means 9:30 - Dr. G's #1 Coffee Pick for 2026 (The Only One He'll Touch) 10:15 - Why L-Theanine Changes the Entire Coffee Experience 11:15 - Lion's Mane: The Brain Ingredient With a Double-Blind Trial Behind It 12:00 - Chaga: The Antioxidant Workhorse You Feel Three Months In 12:45 - Grass-Fed Collagen: The Ingredient Almost No Coffee Brand Includes 13:30 - The Only Coffee Company That Has Run Three Independent Clinical Trials 14:15 - Where to Find It and Why He's Never Going Back Get your free guide from Dr. G: https://page-builder-christiangon110.replit.app/opt-in/ Learn more about your ad choices. Is That Your Intuition Talking — Or Your Anxiety? You've been told to trust your gut. Follow your intuition. Listen to your body. But what if what you've been calling intuition is actually anxiety in disguise? In this episode Audrey gets into one of the most important — and least talked about — conversations around manifestation and nervous system regulation. Because here's the thing: if you spent the Lion's Gate Portal calling in everything you want, the next step is being able to actually hear the universe delivering it. And you cannot do that if your nervous system is running the show.In this episode you'll learn:What intuition actually is — and why it has nothing to do with being psychicThe key differences between an intuitive hit and an anxiety spiral — and how to tell them apart in real timeWhy anxiety is always loud, urgent, and future-tripping — while intuition is quiet, clear, and presentHow your nervous system can override your intuition and make anxiety feel like a gut feelingWhy you can be anxious AND have an accurate intuitive hit — and how to discern between the twoThe grounding body scan practice Audrey uses to come back into herself when she's spiralingWhat to ask yourself when you're trying to figure out if something is fear or genuine knowingWhy asking Chat GPT, texting all your friends, and making pros and cons lists are signs you're seeking relief from anxiety — not actually listening to your intuitionHow to start building your relationship with your own intuition through small daily questions✨✨ RISE Tribe - Next Steps✨✨For All the Things: www.helloaudreyrose.com/linkinbio Intuition Reset Sound Bath: www.helloaudreyrose.com/intuitionRISE Retreat: https://www.helloaudreyrose.com/retreatFREE 7 day Nervous System Reset Group - get daily nervous system reset practices in just 10 min a day, with Audrey as your guide https://www.helloaudreyrose.com/7days Nervous System Reset Training (Free): www.helloaudreyrose.com/reset Happiness Bundle - www.helloaudreyrose.com/happiness

We have an adversary that accuses and seeks to test us, he is like a roaring lion seeking to devour. But the true lion, the Lion of Judah, disarmed the spiritual powers on the cross. With faith, discernment, power, and authority, God provides us with weapons that we need to break legal rights, cancel assignments, and overcome in Christ Jesus.

Today's conversation is raw, moving, and deeply powerful.About a year ago, my co-worker Melinda came across a book by Davey Blackburn. In 2015, Davey's world was completely shattered when his wife, Amanda, was tragically murdered during a home invasion. As you can imagine, this event was not only devastating, but it shifted his life in a completely different direction.Today, Davey is remarried to Kristi, and together they have dedicated their lives to living out the truth that when you follow Jesus, Nothing is Wasted. They lead a multi-faceted ministry that helps people navigate trauma, grief, and major life transitions and helps them find purpose in their deepest pain.Melinda and Davey both sit down with me today. If your life has ever been affected by the type of grief that causes you to wonder if God can bring good from your story, this is worth the listen. We jump into the conversation with Davey giving us as glimpse of his life and the incredible journey that led to starting Nothing Is Wasted Ministries. Memorable Quotes:“You're not blended until you're first broken.” “We want to be guides to help accelerate people's healing journey, because pain is the common denominator of life.”“I saw people's suffering as an obstacle to our mission.”“When the enemy sets something in motion in our life, God already has a redemptive plan in mind.”“I realized early on that I was never going to get a full explanation for why this happened. I will one day, I'll see Jesus face-to-face and I'll look at him, and all of my questions will be resolved…once I step into the unadulterated presence of God, I don't think I'll even have to ask, I'll just go, ‘It makes sense.'”“Until then, when I don't have explanation for something as senseless as this that has happened in my life, what I have to look for is I have to look for mean, I have to look for purpose, to go, ok God, I'm choosing to partner with you and you're going to have to help me to undo the work of the enemy in my life.”“There is abundant and and a blessed life in store for you in God's healing and redemptive plan, but that is also held in the same open hand as continued suffering. There is a both and.”“If you're going to have a message that is going to be true and genuine, that is refined, you're going to go through fire.”“I was able to be the rawest, realest version of myself at the feet of Jesus, and as excruciating as it was, what it did was it began to then allow me to see where God was in the middle of my story.”“We've got to confront these things head on and go, ‘Ok God, I'm going to trust you, as I deal with this, as I face this, that you're going to meet me here and you're going to heal me in this.”“God is always in the work of being for our good and His glory and the world's gain.”Show Notes:Psalm 116:15John 10:10Romans 8:28Romans 12:1-2Acts 7:54-60Acts 9:161 Peter 5:8Nothing is Wasted by Davey BlackburnThrough the Eyes of a Lion by Levi LuskoWalking with God through Pain and Suffering by Tim Keller
Most people are chasing visibility while their credibility quietly runs out, and that gap once cost Dana Flanagan's entire team their paycheck. In this episode, Stephen sits down with Dana Flanagan, a real estate authority turned media strategist and founder of The Authority Architects, to unpack the real difference between being seen and being trusted. Dana shares the business partner whose visibility hid the fact he had no money, and the near-fatal car accident that later collapsed her timeline on everything else. It's the Lion and Lamb methodology in action, the conviction to walk away from a business built on facade, paired with the humility to drop the performer mask and lead from real service. We Unpack: Why visibility without credibility cost her entire team their paycheck The moment "guru worship" started dying, and why that's a good thing How to niche down without losing business, and whether you can go too niche The "John Doe" method for writing copy that actually converts Why referrals and in-person trust beat advertising every time How to know if you or your content are actually ready for the spotlight The car accident that taught her "time is precious, do it now" Connect with Dana Flanagan: Burnout to Brilliance (book waitlist): Work with Dana (The Authority Architects): https://danaflanagan.com Connect with Stephen Scoggins: Website: https://stephenscoggins.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephen_scoggins LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephenscoggins If you got value from this episode, subscribe to One Part Lion, One Part Lamb wherever you listen, and leave a rating and review, it helps this show reach more high-capacity, faith-driven leaders!

In this episode of The Leader's Notebook, I conclude the You've Got Mail series by returning to the Book of Revelation and asking what its message means for believers living in the world today. Revelation is not merely a sequence of end-times events to be organized into a timeline. It is a letter to the Church—a sweeping, symbolic vision that pulls back the curtain and reveals Jesus Christ as Lord over history, eternity, and every power that rises against Him. We will explore the seals, trumpets, visions, beasts, and judgments of Revelation without losing sight of its central message: above every tyrant, conflict, and spirit of Antichrist stands the Lamb upon Mount Zion. Jesus is both the sacrificed Lamb and the conquering Lion, and all the redeemed stand with Him in victory. Revelation reminds us that the forces of darkness are real, but they are temporary. Christ will overcome them all. The final message of Revelation is not fear, speculation, or confusion—it is grace. No matter what suffering, uncertainty, persecution, or hardship we face, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ remains with His people. We have received the message: Jesus is Lord, His victory is certain, and His grace will sustain us to the very end. - Dr. Mark Rutland Chapters (00:00:03) - The Leaders Notebook(00:00:26) - Mark Rutland Announces Travis Rutland's New Podcast(00:01:58) - Epistles: You've Got Got Mail(00:03:20) - Revelation 5, Personal Prayer(00:05:15) - Read the Book of Revelation(00:13:08) - John the Revelation: Symbols and the Words(00:18:18) - Book of Revelation(00:24:55) - Book of Revelation(00:32:00) - Mark of the Beast(00:35:46) - How the Book of Revelation Ends(00:40:24) - Leader's Notebook
June 16th, 2000. The first of only 89 times The Tragically Hip ever played 'Tiger The Lion' live, and the last one is a long way off from there.Eighty-nine, per Hipbase and setlist.fm. That's the whole run, first to last, June 2000 to a night in November 2009. Fifteen of those as an opener, which makes sense to everybody at the table. Fifteen as an encore, which makes sense to nobody. It never went out as a single. The record it sits second on went two times platinum in Canada and took home the Juno, and it's the second of the two Steve Berlin made with the boys. 'Tiger The Lion' landed at number 65 on the TTHTop40 Countdown and not one person in this room is at peace with that. Then there's the poll. Just over half the Facebook group came back with love it, which the panel did not see coming, and close to eight in ten landed at like it or better. For a track this strange, sitting where it sits, that's a number worth chewing on. Somebody in the comments wanted an option between love it and like it. Jeff has a fix for that, and it's better than extra medium.Duxoop from Toledo dropped a question in the chat that stopped the table cold. What is that opening noise? Jeff had already gone looking earlier in the week, so we get the answer live: what the sound actually is, who made it, and the instrument buried underneath it that most of the congregation has never once picked out. Twenty-six years of listening and there it is, right in front of everybody the whole time.We spin the MuchMusic Intimate & Interactive version from that same summer, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner on stage with them, and then Jeff comes back with something none of us caught. Gord is reciting under Rob's outro. Not scatting. Reciting. From a poem, by a Canadian poet Gord loved enough to record in full for a tribute record years later. And the hotel that poem is named for is a ten minute walk from where Jeff grew up.WHAT ELSE IS IN HERE• John fucking Cage. Greg pulls the passage Gord was reading and puts it in a bigger frame, and it turns out to be about a whole lot more than music. Jeff, meanwhile, has listened to some John Cage and has thoughts about it that are not kind, and he says them anyway.• A song with no chorus. Not a bridge in the middle either, just a break. So how does it hook anybody? Dave takes a run at that one, and at what Rob does on the outro instead of what any other guitar player would have done with all that room.• Greg's theory that the catalogue splits into four groups, that this is where the art rock properly starts, and that this cut sits in the top five heaviest songs the band ever recorded. Bombs dropping. His words.• The sequencing. 'My Music At Work' into 'Tiger The Lion' into 'Lake Fever'. Dave would have moved it. Greg would not have moved a thing.• Where the lyrics turn. Dave on the shift that starts around this record and how much harder Gord makes you work from here on in, and Greg on the mouth shapes and the dancing and writing words that sound right before they mean anything.• First listens. A leaked MP3 that took seven hours to download. A boombox on a deck in Tacoma running the record two days straight. A Calgary apartment full of diehards filing this one under wait, what.Next week the wheel lands on 'No Threat', one of the two new tracks tucked onto "Yer Favourites". Brand new panel, brand new song.THE PANEL• Greg from Tacoma. Met the boys back around 'New Orleans Is Sinking', has seven to ten copies of every CD and gave most of them away. He makes music with AI under Hadees Market Music, spelled H-A-D-E-E-S, after his grandparents Hazel and Ira D.• Jeff from Belleville. Third time in the chair. Belleville sits on the Bay of Quinte, which is exactly why the last ten minutes of this one belong to him.• Dave from Halifax. First time at the table, and a musician, which shows the second the outro starts.GEDFEST TORONTO - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17The Horseshoe Tavern, with Grace, 2. What do you do when you've lost everything? Pivotal Moment: A 2015 wildfire destroyed his home, including the 180-page hard-copy manuscript for his latest novel, Gridless Near Seattle. He rebuilt over and over again, but after a wildfire took out his beautiful log home in the mountains of western Washington along with the 185 pages of his novel, Thomas couldn't bring himself to go back to it. That momentum-killer of loss held him for 7 years - until the right messenger showed up to remind him he's a writer, a talented one, and that he needed to sit down and get started again. He restarted the novel, changed the title to Osprey Gold, and incorporated real-life experiences like his loss of a newly planted vinyard, thanks to highly motivated bears, and the pivot to a legal cannabis growing farm. Curious? Listen to the episode, and then buy the book. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Listeners, now it's your turn: What will you get back to work on, after hearing Thomas' story of resilience and persistence? Who are the people who advocated for you, who are the people you'll listen to when you need a champion and cheerleader? --- From Thomas Lion I've lived a long, colorful life — retiring from major marijuana wholesaling at 25, followed by five fugitive years that ended in an Unsolved Mysteries capture and years incarcerated teaching GED classes. My 1998 memoir was later optioned by Lions Gate. Between Osprey Gold and the Unsolved Mysteries American Fugitive memoir arc that came before it — the long road, the phoenix rise after losing everything in the 2015 wildfires, the rebuild, and the late‑life return to the writing rodeo — I've got a story your Boomer audience will connect with deeply. It's one of those rare indie author journeys that's truly worth telling. My writing comes from lived experience and resilience, with Osprey Gold shaped by the emotional engine of a modern‑day family facing crisis and reconciliation in polarized rural western America. Rawrr! Prayer is good, right? But what happens when someone makes it against the law to pray?!?! Find out in this great episode!Prayer is talking to GodDaniel would continuously talk to God through prayer. Even when he was threatened to be thrown into the lion's den, Daniel would continue to pray to God.Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.– Colossians 4:2Daniel 2, Daniel 6Daniel and the Lion's DenDaniel was a very good, faithful man, who always obeyed God. He would pray to God consistently, three times a day. Daniel had a very close relationship to God due to how often he would talk to God through prayer and because of his unshakable faith. God also gave Daniel an incredible gift—Daniel was able to interpret dreams. This gift led Daniel to successfully interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. The king then gave Daniel a high up position in the kingdom and gave him many gifts. Because Daniel was so smart, other wise men in the kingdom were very jealous. Their jealousy led them to convince King Darius to make a new law—that the people were only allowed to pray to the king. If people chose not to obey this law, they would be thrown in the lion's den. These jealous men knew that Daniel would never obey this law since he would pray to God several times a day.Daniel continued to pray in his room, even when he had heard about this new law. After the jealous men saw him do this, they told King Darius. This made King very upset because he cared for Daniel and tried to get him out of trouble, but knew there was no way around it. Before throwing him in the den, King Darius told Daniel “Your God, to whom you are so loyal, is going to get you out of this.” The next morning, King Darius went to check on Daniel and heard Daniel say “My God sent his angel to shut the lion's mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have wronged you, Your majesty.” Daniel had not been harmed! They both knew that Daniel was protected because he had completely trusted God and had faith in Him. Daniel had a great amount of love for the Lord. Daniel also had a deep and personal connection to God because he would intentionally talk to God all the time through prayer. Regardless of the situation he was facing, he would make time to pray. Sometimes, we can get so caught up in our daily routine, that we neglect to prioritize our quiet time with God. But the truth is, God wants to hear from us—He wants us to talk to Him because of His love for each and every one of us.I can talk to God. Questions to think about:1. Why did Daniel continue to pray, even when he knew his life would be threatened?2. Why did Daniel have such a close relationship with God?3. How can I remember to talk to God on a daily basis?

Do you struggle to get good sleep? The reason you're exhausted, waking up at 3 a.m., or struggling to feel like yourself might surprise you. And likely has to do with sneaky and quietly disruptive sleep habits. In this episode of the HEAL with Kelly Podcast, I sit down with world renowned sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, PhD, a double board-certified Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Sleep Specialist known as The Sleep Doctor. After nearly 25 years in the field, he has a refreshingly simple message: we may be making wellness — and sleep — far more complicated than it needs to be. There is a ton of information jam packed in this episode. We explore the fascinating science of our individual sleep chronotypes (I'm a Lion, what are you?!) and how understanding your body's natural rhythm could change the way you approach not only sleep, but your entire day. Dr. Breus shares some surprisingly simple sleep tips that challenge many of the things we've been taught about getting a good night's rest. We tackle some of the biggest questions around sleep — from those frustrating middle-of-the-night wake-ups, to menopause, sleep apnea, melatonin, sleep trackers, caffeine, alcohol, and the everyday habits that may be affecting us more than we realize. And we go beyond sleep itself, exploring the fascinating world of dreams, the connection between sleep and emotional healing, and why the timing of everything from your morning routine to intimacy may matter more than you think. This conversation made me look at sleep in an entirely new way. Rather than chasing the perfect nighttime routine, what if better sleep actually begins with what you do the moment you wake up? If you're ready to understand your sleep differently and discover simple ways to feel more rested and energized, this episode is for you. This week, Meagan and Lola sit down with Michelle McPhee, investigative reporter and host of podcast Kingdom of Fraud, to discuss how Jacob Kingston, a fundamentalist Mormon from the secretive polygamist sect known as the Kingston clan, or the “Order,” teamed up with a shadowy Armenian tycoon nicknamed “the Lion” to commit one of the largest fraud schemes in U.S. history. She’ll explain how Jacob’s drive to prove himself as one of over 100 siblings within the insular Kingston hierarchy got him in over his head with Levon Termendzhyan, his unlikely partner in the massive scheme they embarked on: it involved renewable fuel tax credits, international money laundering, powerful political connections, and billions of dollars. Plus, how they finally got caught–with the help of a couple of Trust Me’s previous guests. SOURCES Kingdom of FraudSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Alan Cox Show
Leaders who do deep soul-level work outperform everyone else by 20 to 1, and Joel Puthoff found his way into that number the hard way: sleeping in his car for a week just to make payroll. In this episode, Stephen sits down with Joel Puthoff, CEO and co-founder of Linxy and author of Capability Fuel, to talk about what actually separates leaders who build lasting capacity from those who just borrow it. Joel shares the season he nearly broke himself trying to keep his team paid, the reframe that got him through it, and the philosophy he's built out of it since: choose your hard, or hard will choose you. It's the Lion and Lamb methodology in action, the strength to keep building through the hardest seasons, paired with the humility to let those seasons actually change you. In this episode: The real story behind Joel sleeping in his car to make payroll, and why he calls it gratitude, not shame The difference between building capacity and borrowing it Why "choose your hard, or hard will choose you" should be your operating philosophy The study showing soul-level leaders outperform everyone else 20 to 1 How Stephen turned $4.68 into $468, and what it taught him about sacrifice The shift from performance to authenticity, and why Stephen calls it "truly magnetic" How Linxy is using technology to bring people back into real, in-person connection About Joel Puthoff: CEO and co-founder of Linxy, an app helping people make real, in-person connections at events and venues. Why do certain stories break us open in ways we cannot fully explain? Why does the sacrifice of a fictional lion make a grown adult cry? Why does a humble gardener carrying his friend through darkness produce that catch in the throat that feels like something more than sentiment? Why does a wrongly imprisoned man emerging into the rain with his arms outstretched feel less like a plot point and more like a moment of genuine liberation? In this episode Tanya explores one of the most beautiful ideas in all of Christian thought — the concept C.S. Lewis called Sehnsucht — the inconsolable longing that no earthly experience can satisfy. Drawing from Ecclesiastes 3:11, Lewis's works including The Weight of Glory and Mere Christianity, and Tolkien's argument that the gospel is the myth that is also true, Tanya makes the case that the stories that move us most are not accidental. They are echoes. Breadcrumbs scattered by God across the human imagination — in Narnia and Middle Earth and nineteenth century Paris and the walls of Shawshank — all carrying the same thread. The same fingerprint. The same frequency that the eternity in every human heart was designed to recognize. She walks through the gospel thread running through The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Lord of the Rings, Les Misérables, The Shawshank Redemption, Beauty and the Beast, and Encanto — showing the specific gospel element each story carries. And she addresses what we see in people who reject the longing versus those who follow it home — drawing from Pascal, Frankl, and Augustine. This is not a theology lecture. It is a joyful, relational, wonder-filled conversation about the Story we were all made for. In This Episode You'll Learn: What Ecclesiastes 3:11 means when it says God set eternity in the human heart C.S. Lewis's concept of Sehnsucht — the inconsolable longing and what it points toward The famous argument Lewis received from Tolkien — the gospel as the myth that is also true Why story bypasses the defensive intellect and reaches the soul directly The gospel thread running through The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe — substitutionary atonement and resurrection The gospel threads in The Lord of the Rings — providence, sacrificial love, and human insufficiency completed by grace The grace-and-law dynamic in Les Misérables — and what Javert shows us about the person who cannot receive grace The resurrection imagery in The Shawshank Redemption The gospel of love-before-worthiness in Beauty and the Beast The performance-based identity and grace-restoration arc in Encanto What Pascal, Viktor Frankl, and Augustine contribute to the question of the rejected longing What is different about the life of the person who has received the True Story An invitation to pay attention to the ache — and follow the thread home People and Works Referenced C.S. Lewis — The Weight of Glory, Mere Christianity, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, An Experiment in Criticism J.R.R. Tolkien — The Lord of the Rings, On Fairy Stories Victor Hugo — Les Misérables Blaise Pascal — Pensées Viktor Frankl — Man's Search for Meaning Augustine of Hippo — Confessions Carl Jung — Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious Scripture Referenced Ecclesiastes 3:11 — "He has set eternity in the human heart." Romans 5:8 — "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." John 1:5 — "The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it." Romans 8:22 — "The whole creation has been groaning." Revelation 21:5 — "Behold, I am making all things new." Key Takeaway The stories that move us most are not accidental. They carry the frequency of the True Story — the gospel of sacrifice, grace, resurrection, and love-before-worthiness that God has been telling since before time began. The ache they produce is not sentiment. It is the eternity in your heart recognizing where it belongs. Pay attention to it. Follow the thread. It points home. I hope this episode blesses you!
