In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Rupy Aujla, an NHS GP and the founder of The Doctor's Kitchen, an app that includes doctor-approved recipes to cook at home. In this conversation, we dive into why cardiovascular disease remains the #1 killer worldwide, the connection between cholesterol and heart health, how fiber acts as a “magical nutrient” for the body, how to introduce it into your daily meals, and the role of lifestyle choices in preventing illness and supporting long-term brain and heart health. *** About Dr. Rupy Aujla: After suffering a significant heart condition, he dove deep into the science of nutritional medicine and was able to reverse his condition through food and lifestyle. In 2015, he launched The Doctor's Kitchen as a way to teach people how to cook their way to better health and to showcase the medicinal effects of eating well. The incredible “Doctor's Kitchen” cooking app has over 1000 delicious, science-backed recipes and 20 brand new ones added each month. There's also a handy meal planner that will personalise recipes based on your preferences. It actually suggested a delicious looking salmon poached in harissa coconut sauce, and olive and date braised chicken, which suit my personal dietary needs and all sound great. While the REM sleep phase is when your body focuses on reenergizing your mind, the NREM phase, and specifically the deep sleep stage, is when your body's physically restorative processes take place. With your brain less active, the blood supply to your muscles and tissues increases, delivering oxygen and nutrients that promote muscle repair and growth. Let's dig into some specific connections between sleep and muscle recovery.Professor Shona Halson is the Deputy Director of the SPRINT Research Centre atACU's School of Behavioural and Health Sciences. During the ageing process, physical capabilities (e.g., muscular strength) and cognitive functions (e.g., memory) gradually decrease. Regarding cognitive functions, substantial functional (e.g., compensatory brain activity) and structural changes (e.g., shrinking of the hippocampus) in the brain cause this decline. From a glance:Dementia affects approximately 47 million individuals globally with projections of 130 million by the year 2050.Late-onset Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for approximately 75% of all cases and is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function, memory, and cerebral volume. The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease is poorly understood; however, aging, genetics, and an individual's diet and lifestyle over several decades appear to be key determinants.Excitingly, growing evidence points towards a relationship between cognition and measures of muscular strength and muscle mass. First part of this episode goes into the brain ageing process and the second half is about the effects of resistance training on brain function. Studies/ references mentioned:1. Cognitive enhancing drugs are claimed to improve cognitive functions such as learning and attention. However, little is known presently about the characteristics of off-prescription cognitive enhancing drug users or their perceived everyday experience with these drugs. Modafinil has been the drugs of desire for a long time now. If you ever saw the Bradley Cooper movie called limitless, you probably wish you had access to this drug. Laboratory studies have even shown that it may have potent antioxidative and neuroprotective effects. Modafinil is also of a high interest to the US military for enhancing alertness and reducing battle fatigue. So why isn't everybody on this drug? Well In today's podcast, I host a guest who knows more about the science of modafinil than anyone. Current evidence indicates cold water immersion may be the most effective method of pre-cooling to improve endurance performance in hot conditions, although practicality must be considered. Ice slurry ingestion appears to be the most promising practical alternative.Dr. Craig Heller, Professor of Biology at Stanford University and world expert on the science of temperature regulation. In this episode Dr. Heller explains how heat impairs muscular and mental performance, and how to cool the brain and body to reduce inflammation and to enhance performance. Dr. Heller teaches us the best ways to Coll our body down during performance, and how to use the precise timing and location of cooling on our body to greatly enhance endurance and weight training performance. He describes how cooling technology discovered and engineered in his laboratory has led to a tripling of anaerobic performance and allowed endurance athletes to run further and faster, as well as to eliminate delayed onset muscle soreness. If you're interested in understanding the science behind cold water immersion, ice baths and how training in the cold weather than this is the episode for you.Craig's Cool Mitt - https://www.coolmitt.com/company/about-usSponsors:Eight Sleep: $150 off - NEUROhttps://www.eightsleep.com/neuroYou can follow me or contact me here ---Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3ewI5P0Instagram: louisanicola_Twitter : louisanicola_YouTube: Louisa NicolaThe information provided in this show is not medical advice, nor should it be taken or applied as a replacement for medical advice. Louisa Nicola is a neurophysiologist, brain coach to elite athletes, and Founder of Neuro Athletics, a full-service neuroscience diagnostic testing company. Back in episode #436, Louisa Nicola gave us an introduction to the brain and nervous system, setting the foundation for us to understand how neuroscience can help us get more out of life. This week, Louisa is back to dive deeper into the science behind brain performance. In this discussion, Chase and Louisa talk about the three domains of peak brain performance: nutrition, physical exercise, and neurophysiology. Louisa breaks down how to utilize nutrients, exercise, and sleep, so you can better optimize your brain health. The pair also talk about keeping the blood-brain barrier strong, the benefits of using exogenous ketones, and why you need to be more mindful of maintaining your dopamine levels. Plus… Can our brain cells regenerate or are the connections just getting stronger? Stick around until the end to hear Louisa's shocking answer! Follow Louisa Nicola @louisanicola_ Learn more about NeuroAthletics Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights Sleep: “Sleep is probably the most underrated high performance tool we have,” Louisa says. If you're an athlete who doesn't get enough quality sleep, it affects almost every aspect of your performance and increases risk for injury. Louisa goes on to describe the impacts of sleep on brain health, brain disorders, and brain aging. Nutrition: “When it comes to the brain, there are certain things that the brain favors, especially as it relates to nutrition and supplementation,” Louisa says. Listen in to learn how stress, inflammation, and supplementation of key nutrients, like EPA and DHA, can play a role in longevity and cognitive performance. Plus, Louisa explains the benefits of going on a high fat diet immediately after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion). Hydration is a key indicator of brain functioning. If we are 2% dehydrated, we can have a decrease in our cognitive performance by 30%. Exercise: “You can grow the gray matter of your brain by physical activity alone,” Louisa says. She then recaps various research studies that show the relationship between exercise, particularly resistance training, and cognitive performance as well as how exercise can prevent Alzheimer's disease. Your brain loves quality time with other humans, loving relationships, social interactions, and of course, self-love. How will you know these practices are actually improving your brain health? The brain is a fascinating and complex organ. It's the primary control center for our whole body, and it can be affected by stress in many different ways. Stress itself is an important part of life – it helps us prepare for danger or respond to emergencies. But when we're constantly stressed out, that's when our brain starts to pay the price. This blog post will explore how stress affects your brain, both positively and negatively, so you can develop strategies to reduce your brain's vulnerability to its harmful effects. In this episode I speak with Dr Mithu Storoni, an eye surgeon & neuroscience researcher-turned writer. I have been dying to do this podcast, it's been quite a long time coming. As many of you know I have been wearing a WHOOP strap for many years to track and measure my performance. This strap is pretty much a self-quantification device and allows me to measure my sleep, HRV, recovery, exercise and much more. WHOOP as a company partners with well known physicians and scientists with well known labs across the world to quantify their data. Today I interview Michael Brandt- CEO and founder of HVMN- Health via modern nutrition and the research lead for his company- Dr Latt Mansor.
