They do the work, they turn up, they believe in themselves and sometimes, they even wear the same clothes. In today's Build a Business not a Job Podcast I chat with Mark Creedon, founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind about a dozen techniques to triumph. Drive – know where you're going Whether it is the drive to be the best in the world at a specific skill – spin bowling – or the passion to build the most user-friendly tech experience at Apple, successful people are focused on their end goal. Proven losers Once people have the ability to spring back from their losses, they are more able to take the risks and challenges life inevitably throws out. And once that mindset is in place, coupled with a focus on achievement, a loss can create a gain. Let others do their part There is a necessary time to allow others into the business and to allow them to do the job in their way. By allowing others to take the load and share their knowledge, the outcome can be greater than the sum of its parts. Avoid distractions – from their goal and in daily life Achieving a distraction-free state of flow is the best and most efficient way to work and get things done. Communicate. Without it, ‘It's like winking at a girl in the dark' Berkshire Hathaway founder Warren Buffet says communication skills are the most important traits for success. “If you can't communicate, somebody said, it's like winking at a girl in the dark,” he says. “Nothing happens.” Break the mold Successful people are often willing to stand out. Test cricketer Stuart McGill says spin legend Shane Warne “broke the mold” in cricket, not only with his spin action but also with his off-field antics. This pairing of performance and personality brought new followers to the game. Think on your feet The ability to be agile and take chances – even if they fail – is a key habit of the successful. Let's do it People who thrive see the outcome. They determine a course of action and set their minds to achieve it.  Routine is a common element for those who succeed. Yes, yes, yes, no. Make the decision Successful people are decisive.  They may not always be right, but at least they make a decision, which allows for a speedier process and new possibilities. ‘Done is better than perfect' This leads on from decisiveness. The philosophy is about achieving small steps, not about sacrificing quality. As there is no such thing as perfection – which is different for different people – many successes consider milestones and progress more important than a mythical ideal. ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again' Resilience is considered the most important characteristic for success. People will inevitably get knocked down, criticised, rejected, or considered wrong, but with stamina and grit, many people overcome. Old-fashioned hard work, turning up every day, gets results. T-shirt and jeans Many successful people have systematized their life to strip back distractions.  By either planning ahead or making a routine of everyday tasks, they can reclaim time and energy to think about other outcome-focused enterprises. Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines practiced every day, while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day. If you think about it, it's the accumulative weight of our disciplines and our judgments that leads us to either fortune or failure. So how can you become more successful in life, investing, or in your business or profession and have a lower chance of failure? One of the best ways I know is to study successful people, or even better is to study failures, and then have a mentor by your side to make sure you keep doing the right thing. In today's show Mark Creedon, founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind and one of my coaches and mentors, and I are going to share with you a list of things we believe you need to understand about investing, the economy, and business. This is really a follow-on from the last chat we had together a few weeks ago where we discussed 24 things we felt you should know and these were based on the musings of Morgan Housell, my favorite finance writer. Judging by the number of downloads that podcast got it was very popular and I'm sure you'll gain some insights from my chat with Mark today whether you're a beginning or an experienced investor or a businessperson. Economic and Business Success Lessons Investment banker Dresdner Kleinwort looked at analysts' predictions of interest rates and compared that with what interest rates actually did in hindsight. It found an almost perfect lag. "Analysts are terribly good at telling us what has just happened but of little use in telling us what is going to happen in the future," the banker said. It's common to confuse the rear-view mirror for the windshield. Study successful investors, and you'll notice a common denominator: they are Masters of Psychology. They can't control the market, but they have complete control over the grey matter between their ears. Try to learn as many investing mistakes as possible vicariously through others. Other people have made every mistake in the book. You can learn more from studying the investing failures than the investing greats. "Investor Dean Williams once wrote, "Confidence in a forecast rises with the amount of information that goes into it. But the accuracy of the forecast stays the same."  No one on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans can be described as a "perma-bear." A natural sense of optimism is not only healthy but vital. How long you stay invested for will likely be the single most important factor determining how well you do at investing. When you think you have a great idea, go out of your way to talk with someone who disagrees with it. At worst, you continue to disagree with them. More often, you'll gain valuable perspective. Fight confirmation bias like the plague. A number of years ago I started making a list of all the things one needed to know about investing. I wanted to capture the favorite quotes I have read and the lessons I have learned. This ended up being a more ambitious project than I envisaged, and it remains an ongoing one. So, in today's show, Mark Creedon and I are going to share with you a list of 24 things we believe you need to understand about investing, the economy, and business, and this list is based on the musings of Morgan Housell, my favorite finance writer, and I'm sure you'll gain some insights from my chat with Mark today whether you're a beginning or an experienced investor or a businessperson. 24 Lessons About Investing and the Economy Over the years one of my favorite columnists whose articles I read regularly is Morgan Housell who used to write for Motley Fool and now writes for Collaborative Fun He writes a lot about behavioral finance and why supposedly rational people act irrationally when it comes to money, finance, and business. A number of years ago he wrote a great column where he detailed 122 things everyone should know about investing and the economy and there were some great lessons to take away from that article. I've pulled a number of these out today to discuss with my business partner Mark Creedon founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind. Saying “I'll be greedy when others are fearful” is easier than actually doing it.  When most people say they want to be a millionaire, what they really mean is “I want to spend $1 million,” which is literally the opposite of being a millionaire.  Daniel Kahneman's book Thinking Fast and Slow begins, “The premise of this book is that it is easier to recognize other people's mistakes than your own.” This should be every market commentator's motto. As Erik Falkenstein says: “In expert tennis, 80% of the points are won, while in amateur tennis, 80% are lost. The same is true for wrestling, chess, and investing: Beginners should focus on avoiding mistakes, experts on making great moves.”  There is a difference between, “He predicted the crash of 2008,” and “He predicted crashes, one of which happened to occur in 2008.” It's important to know the difference when praising investors. Wealth is relative. As comedian Chris Rock said, “If Bill Gates woke up with Oprah's money he'd jump out the window.” The Financial Times wrote, “In 2008 the three most admired personalities in sport were probably Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, and Oscar Pistorius.” The same falls from grace happen in investing. Choose your role models carefully. Investor Nick Murray once said, “Timing the market is a fool's game, whereas time in the market is your greatest natural advantage.” Remember this the next time you're compelled to cash out..  Jason Zweig writes, “The advice that sounds the best in the short run is always the most dangerous in the long run.” Billionaire investor Ray Dalio once said, “The more you think you know, the more closed-minded you'll be.” Repeat this line to yourself the next time you're certain of something.   John Reed once wrote, “When you first start to study a field, it seems like you have to memorize a zillion things. You don't. What you need is to identify the core principles — generally three to twelve of them — that govern the field. The millions of things you thought you had to memorize are simply various combinations of the core principles.” Keep that in mind when getting frustrated over complicated financial formulas. James Grant says, “Successful investing is about having people agree with you … later.” Scott Adams writes, “A person with a flexible schedule and average resources will
be happier than a rich person who has everything except a flexible schedule. Step one in your search for happiness is to continually work toward having control of your schedule.” Investors want to believe in someone. Forecasters want to earn a living. One of those groups is going to be disappointed. I think you know which. As the saying goes, “Save a little bit of money each month, and at the end of the year you'll be surprised at how little you still have.”  John Maynard Keynes once wrote, “It is safer to be a speculator than an investor in the sense that a speculator is one who runs risks of which he is aware, and an investor is one who runs risks of which he is unaware.” Our memories of financial history seem to extend about a decade back. “Time heals all wounds,” the saying goes. It also erases many important lessons.  You are under no obligation to read or watch financial news. If you do, you are under no obligation to take any of it seriously. Most economic news that we think is important doesn't matter in the long run. Derek Thompson of The Atlantic once wrote, “I've written hundreds of articles about the economy in the last two years. But I think I can reduce those thousands of words to one sentence. Things got better, slowly.”  The “evidence is unequivocal,” Daniel Kahneman writes, “there's a great deal more luck than skill in people getting very rich.” There is a strong correlation between knowledge and humility. The best investors realize how little they know. Not a single person in the world knows what the market will do in the short run. The more someone is on TV, the less likely his or her predictions are to come true.  How long you stay invested will likely be the single most important factor determining how well you do at investing. The underlying theme of my podcast is property investment, success and money, and today I will be talking a bit about success with Mark Creedon, founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind. But this isn't a business show – you will find what we discuss today relevant no matter what you do for a living, and if you are a property investor, you really do you have a business on the side – a property investment business. Many of us chase career titles, money, social status or even a big property portfolio — and yet we don't feel successful when we get those things. That's because you can only measure success in your life when you define what drives your happiness and helps you find purpose. So if you're struggling to define what a successful life means, you'll be pleased to hear Mark and me explain that: It's never too late to start over. You get to write your own definition of success. What is success? Is it wealth? Is it happiness? Is it fame? I have come to the conclusion that success can't be defined in one sentence, but instead, it is comprised of many things. Success is something you have to define for yourself and no one can do it for you. For some success means a sense of giving back to the world and making a difference. For others, it was a sense of accomplishment in their career or business. For others, it meant doing what they love. I bet there will be some people listening to this podcast disappointed in where they are in life at the moment. For some of their progress, we have been hindered by the economic and health challenges Covid has brought to us. For others, there will be various reasons why they haven't achieved the success they want to yet in life - yet. Stick with us because it's not too late and you're not too old to succeed. I'm sure you've heard stories like: At age 23, Oprah had just been fired from her first broadcasting job. At age 62, Colonel Sanders' fried chicken business KFC finally succeeded. At age 77, Nelson Mandela became South Africa's president after spending 27 years in jail. If we can learn anything from these people who succeed later in life, it's this: Success has no deadline. Success means attempting to move forward. Let's start with understanding the difference between accomplishment and success Accomplishment is often associated with success, but it is not the same. Accomplishment refers to the results we desire when we attempt to reach specific goals. Basically, it is the results that we plan or expect to occur. Success is the positive consequence or outcome of an achieved accomplishment. So what is needed to succeed in life? Physical health: you need to be physically healthy to have the energy to engage in life. If you don't have a baseline of health you can't function and can't be successful. Mental fitness: you need to be continuously engaging your mind. Learning and growing, experiencing new ideas, getting better, pursuing mastery, and putting your ideas to work to accomplish your goals. Emotional health: you need to be self-aware emotionally, feel good about yourself and have a positive self-image. If you are depressed to the point where you can't function, you can't be successful. Social health: you need positive relationships in your life and people that love and support you. You have friends and loved ones that you trust to make you a better person and inspire you to be better there are people you can call at any time of the night if you have a problem. Humans are social if you don't have people you care about and they care about you you can't be successful. Purpose/meaning/spiritual health: you make a positive impact in others' lives, giving meaning and purpose to your work and daily life. This keeps you focused and inspires you to overcome the day-to-day struggles and setbacks that are a part of everyone's life. Material wealth: there is a basic level of food shelter and clothing that all people need and that is paid for through money. If you are too poor or have too much stress from struggling financially you can't be successful. Conclusion Many people attribute success to how much money they have, what kind of car they drive, or the size of their home. However, should material items really define success? True success is gained not only from the achievement of our goals but also from the happiness and satisfaction derived from pursuing those goals. Why have you been so successful in reaching some of your goals, but not others? It turns out that even brilliant, highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to understanding why they succeed or fail. It's not as simple as you are predisposed to success because you were born with certain talents or lacking in others. That's just one small piece of the puzzle, so today we're going to discuss nine surprising things that successful people do differently from the average person in this month's Build a Business Not a Job podcast with Mark Creedon. Three Categories of Thought The question of how the wealthy think was discussed in our private Facebook Group for Business Accelerator Mastermind. This opened up some great discussions amongst our tribe that we want to share in today's podcast. There are nine thoughts we're going to discuss, and they fall into three categories. What is their internal process – how are they thinking? What is their focus? What are they doing? How successful people think They see themselves as the creator of their wealth – the creator of the circumstances. They take responsibility for their lives They are committed to the process of wealth creation – Not just interested, but continuously thinking about how their actions might produce or erode wealth. They're constantly doing the work. They think big – They think what if it were possible, how could we do it, instead of assuming things aren't possible. What Successful people focus on They manage themselves first – Their mindset, their behaviours, their attitude, their actions, their growth. They are value-driven – The wealthy understand we are living in a value exchange economy – they don't focus on price or cost; they focus on adding value to others They are net worth focused. They are focused on building a portfolio of assets – Real Estate, shares, a business that will deliver multiple income streams – a money machine that allows them to live their life without putting a lot of effort in. What Successful people are doing? They play to win - While the average Australian plays not to lose, the wealthy are playing to win They are in a constant state of self-growth - they are constantly trying to grow, improve, have a bigger impact. They run in successful circles – You should surround yourself with people that will hold you to a higher standard and help you get to the next level. You could read this great book which is well over 700 pages long or you may instead enjoy my chat today with Mark Creedon who will share the top seven lessons he got from this book in this month's Build a Business, Not a Job podcast. The lessons we had a chat about will be relevant for everybody and particularly if you want to succeed in life whether it's in your career, investment, your profession, or in business. 7 Takeaways from Tools of Titans Rather than reading the whopping 707 pages of Tim Ferriss's Tools of Titans, I  to ask Mark  Creedon, founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind and business coach to some of Australia's top business people and entrepreneurs to unpack a number of the lessons for us. Lesson number 1: You are the average of the five people you most associate with You should never underestimate the detrimental effects that your pessimistic or unambitious friends have on you. If someone isn't making you stronger, they're probably making you weaker. Ferris says that “giving your time and energy to negative people is masochistic”. In a nutshell, and I'm sure you've heard it before, you are the average of the five people you most associate with. Lesson number 2: Don't wait until you're ready It's worth remembering that often, reasons come first, and answers come second as Carl Brian often says. Waiting until everything is perfect before making a big change is just a self-protection mechanism. The stars will never align, and all the traffic lights will never be green at the same time so sometimes you just have to make the hard decision to bring about change in your business, to employ that next level to help you scale out; to put systems and structures in place so that you can spend less time in your business and more time in your life. Lesson number 3: Be the best at one thing Focusing on one thing at a time and being great at it is the fastest way to scale your business. Focus on perfecting one thing at a time in your business and don't get distracted by implementing new features or new products all the time. Narrowing your focus will help you broaden the lens and see even more opportunities for success. Lesson number 4: Being in your own business doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing wager. The idea of testing a business idea for a period of time and building both confidence and cash flow makes a lot of sense. It's worth remembering that being successful at business and entrepreneurship is 90% psychological. If you can get the headspace right and you've got an idea that has “legs” then you're well on your way to success. Lesson number 5: Getting preferential treatment can come from being more assertive. You don't have to be aggressive or the biggest dog in the yard, but you do need to be clear on what you want to achieve, standing your ground on the journey to get it, and being assertive where it counts. I suggest the best way to achieve that is to work out what is negotiable and what is nonnegotiable. In your journey to business or professional practice success, there are some things worth fighting for because they are simply not negotiable and that's when you must be your most assertive. Lesson number 6: Fear is a good thing. Tim makes a great observation when he says, “what we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.” Fear is what keeps you focused and motivated. The reality is that your fears often provide you advance notice of exactly what you need to be doing more of. Lesson number 7: Success is way more possible than you think Everybody has wild dreams. The problem is that most of us think they aren't achievable. If we believe they aren't achievable then we never even try. I encourage my grandchildren to aim for the stars because as Richard Branson showed just last week, you might just hit them. It doesn't mean that becoming a wildly successful entrepreneur is easy, but it does mean that it is more possible than you might think. No one likes to fail. In fact, most people would do almost anything to avoid failure. So, do you want to know the real secret to success? It is not dedication, commitment, hard work, smart work, passion, or even habits. You're not going to like the answer. I've heard it said that the real secret to success is managing your failures. In this episode, we'll take a look at some of the lessons we can learn from failure. Failure teaches you that success is never guaranteed. Like Winston Churchill once said, success is moving from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm. Failure isn't final. Failures happen, but they're no reason not to start again. Successful people have lots of failures on the road to their successes This too shall pass. Failure isn't fun, but it's also not permanent. No matter how much it stings at first, you can move past it. Failure forces you to embrace change. When you go through failure, this is basically the universe telling you that there is something you should be doing differently. Failure can be a great source of motivation. For people with the right mindset, failure can be a great source of motivation. Failure teaches you to stay humble. Failure isn't unique. Everyone experiences failure, even the most successful people you know of. Criticism doesn't equal judgment. Time is the greatest teacher. Rejection is a powerful tool.   You can learn valuable lessons from failure. Failure teaches: Creativity. If you fail by taking a route traditionally associated with success, you might have to embark on a novel path when you try again. Who to trust. When someone – even a friend or family member who you thought you could trust – plays a role in your failure, you learn not to trust them so readily in the future. Value. Failure is a chance to take another look at your value and how you can best present it. You to listen to yourself. Tune out any non-constructive, negative feedback that comes from failing and focus on building self-trust. Over time, failure can build resilience, which is why the pain is a little less each time it occurs. What to do better next time. If you can identify the steps that led to your failure and why they had the results they did, you can form a strategy for future success. I have found most successful people have at least one, but usually a number of guiding principles. Things like phrases or ideas by which they live and work To help you develop or add to your own guiding principles, in today's show I have rounded up a number of philosophies or thoughts that I'm going to discuss with Mark Creedon, founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind in our monthly Build a Business, Not a Job podcast. But before we get into the main show, I'd like to share all of the philosophies of Steve Jobs, the late co-founder and CEO of Apple. Jobs said: "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So, you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future." Another interesting philosophy comes from Michael Jordan how famously said: "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed." In today's show, you'll hear Mark Creedon and I talk about failure and how the way you think about it makes a huge difference in how you approach all areas of your life, so welcome to today's show. Life philosophies that could change your life You don't have to look far on the Internet to find blogs about the philosophies that successful people live by. I enjoy reading those blogs and learning what drives successful people. Interestingly I've found some of the best lessons I've learned are the simple ones. I'm still a voracious learner and if I haven't learned something new by lunchtime every day, I've had a bad day. Take responsibility for your world Shouldn't we all? There's a belief in this world, that I completely resonate with, that everything that has happened to you in your life is a direct result of your actions, either your physical actions or your mental actions. Thoughts are things. As you think so you become. This belief is The Law of Attraction. I know everyone doesn't agree with this – but I believe you should be a part of your life, not a passenger. Don't make excuses, take action “You are what you do, not what you say you'll do” — Carl Jung. Action creates momentum and momentum matters. Sure, it's important to make plans and know which way you're heading, in life, in your investments, and in business but plans are just theory unless you take action. You are the company you keep. Someone once told me that you're the sum of the five people with whom you spend the most amount of time and I couldn't agree more. Studies have proven this time and time again – a Harvard study found that if your friend is happy, your chances of being happy increase 15%. It doesn't just stop there – if your friend's friend is happy, your chances of being happy increase by 10%, and if your friend's friend's friend is happy, your chances still increase 6% (if 6% doesn't impress you, you'll be interested to know that a $10,000 increase in annual income only increases your odds by 2%). This rule also works in the negative sense – if your friend becomes obese, your chances of becoming obese increase 57%. The same goes for smoking (61%) and other negative habits. Embrace your limitations. I know one of my strengths in creating – coming up with the big ideas and implementing them. Or creating things like blogs and podcasts. However, I know I'm not in my flow when doing other types of tasks. Trying to change fundamental aspects of your personality is like swimming upriver – you exert tremendous effort with little forward progress. Instead of trying to change these aspects of myself, I've surrounded myself with others who are better at various aspects of our business than me The race is only with yourself. “Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself.” – Mary Schmich When you measure your success against that of another, you create an ever-distancing destination at which you'll never arrive. Develop your own goals and celebrate every achievement. Don't stop when you're tired, stop when you're done You're going to get tired of being an entrepreneur and you'll probably even get burned out… especially when things aren't going well. What's helped me succeed over the years is that I am persistent. It doesn't matter whether I am exhausted, or if I feel that I've put enough hours in the day, I just don't ever stop until things are done. As long as you keep on chugging along, eventually, you will accomplish your goals. Commit to doing whatever it takes to succeed Of course, with the exception of causing harm to others! This discipline underpins all of the above. If we wish for success in life, it's essential we commit to making that wish become a reality. The key to success in life is to go from interest to commitment to taking action from personal power. Honesty is a very expensive gift, do not expect it from cheap people As an entrepreneur, you are going to have to look to other people for feedback and advice. Over the years I've learned that not all advice is equal, as some people give better advice than others. The best advice you are ever going to get is the truth. The truth may hurt, but it will save you time and money. Just don't expect the truth from people who care about saving your feelings. Behind every successful person are a lot of unsuccessful years When people look at what I have accomplished, most of the time they feel that I've done it over the last few years. What they forget to realize is that I have been an entrepreneur for over 10 years. And during that 10-year period, I've lost millions of dollars, made more mistakes than I can count, and put countless hours into my businesses. So as long as you keep pushing forward as an entrepreneur, your odds of succeeding will go up over time. Live in such a way that if someone spoke badly of you, no one would believe it Businesses come and go, but the one thing you should protect more than anything else is your reputation. Your reputation affects any new business ventures or a job you may try to get later down the road. Be so kind and helpful that if someone spoke badly about you, no one would believe them. Just because you are struggling does not mean you are failing Every great success requires some kind of struggle. You're going to have to work hard, fight through the tough times and keep pushing forward. So, when you are struggling, don't give up, keep pushing forward until you see a light at the end of the tunnel. Give Back “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” ―Pablo Picasso. This is a great philosophy because I feel happiness doesn't result from what we get, but from what we give. I am blessed beyond imagination in life, and I feel it's my duty to give back. If I can help others in some way, then I do it. Whether through writing, creating, guidance, feedback, listening, financial, volunteering, etc. There are so many ways to give back. Thank you for joining us. Hamdi Mohamed: [00:01:01] Thank you for having me. I'm happy to be here. Crystal Fincher: [00:01:04] Happy that you're here, excited about your candidacy. I guess I just wanted to start off asking you - what brought you to want to run for the Port? What motivated your decision to say, This is where I want to make a difference? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:01:21] Yeah, Crystal, that's a great question. I honestly never thought I would be running for elected office. That wasn't the thing that I would say as a child, right - What do you want to be? It wasn't, I want to be a politician. I came to the US when I was three years old, as a refugee from Somalia, and one of our first ports of entries into the United States was at Sea-Tac Airport. My family came without a dollar in their pocket, and was just entering the country to find refuge, just to survive.  My mother actually started working at Sea-Tac Airport, it was one of her first jobs. And I watched her growing up, juggle her job at Sea-Tac Airport. I started working when I was 15 years old to help my family make ends meet. And I was always close to seeing - I was always seeing my family struggle and my community struggle. I was always that person that was always trying to figure out how to resolve some sort of issue and ended up going to the University of Washington, studying Law, Societies, and Justice there. Then I went on to work for a number of our local nonprofits, I went on to work for US Congresswoman Jayapal. Now I work for our County Executive Office of Equity and Social Justice as a policy advisor.  And when this pandemic hit, I just saw a lack of leadership. I think now more than ever, we need strong leadership at all levels of government. There is really no going back to the way things were. For me, this is a moment to re-imagine and rebuild a new economy that works for all of us, that works for all of our communities. And I believe that the Port can do that, it is our largest economic engine in the region. It creates jobs and opportunities for our community. And I decided to run for this position because I feel like I can make a big impact there.  I also ran for this position because of the lack of regional representation. The Port of Seattle's operations significantly impact cities in South King County. The Port's largest asset is Sea-Tac Airport. Over 70% of the ports' revenue comes from Sea-Tac Airport. And currently none of our port commissioners live in South King County. So for me, it's time that we have regional representation, that our voices are at the table, a community that's significantly impacted.  Also I want to be able to bring my expertise in equitable economic development, in job creation to the Port of Seattle,and I have some exciting ideas around how we can help our communities build back better, how to help them re-enter the workforce. So many people have lost their jobs and have been hurting during this pandemic, I've seen it very up close. I have been serving on King County's COVID-19 response team since the pandemic hit. And so I've seen the devastating impacts that this pandemic has had on our whole region. And I've seen the data when you look closely, there are certain communities and neighborhoods that are heavily impacted. And so now more than ever, we need strong leadership, we need leadership that are going to have their boots on the ground doing the work. And that is what I'm known for, and that's what I do - when I see a problem, I think of a way to resolve it and I do it with community, I do it in collaboration. And so I want to be able to bring my expertise, and skills, and lived experience to the Port of Seattle. Crystal Fincher: [00:05:23] Well, and I appreciate that, and that's really important. And you talked about how important the Port is economically to our region. And there has been long-time conversation about the need to make sure that the entities that the Port supports and interacts with remain competitive, how important trade and tourism are and how the Port interacts with that. But also how critical it is to treat employees fairly, to make sure we are not leaving anyone behind as we seek a better economy, more stable economy, more prosperity for everyone. And so often the conversation around that pits those in conflict with one another. Do you think they have to be in conflict with one another, or can we make sure that we grow our economy, support tourism, travel companies, trade organizations, and provide a livable wage for folks and a secure living? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:06:32] Yeah. No, I agree with you. Those things should not be in competition, those things should complement each other, right? In order to have good businesses that are functioning, in order for us to have tourism and trade, we have to be able to have workers - employees keep these things functioning and keep the airport moving. The Port in itself, the seaport and the airport, are able to function and bring - add to the economy because of employees. Everyone must be paid a living wage. Businesses should be invested in ensuring that their workers are protected. And elected officials who are elected by the people, that should be their number one top priority. They get put in those positions by the people to ensure that, to keep our government transparent and accessible. For me, those things - they don't compete with each other, they complement each other. We have to make sure that we have strong recovery plans for small businesses, that we are ensuring that we have a seaport that its operations are moving, that we have a smooth operations happening at our seaport, and investments are being made there to ensure that folks do want their containers to come through the Port of Seattle, and that we're being competitive nationally and on a global scale. To me, these things are things that go together, but I think for a long time, we've seen leadership that do not step up for workers who've helped elect them. And I really do think that needs to change, we need to stand with working families and support them, and I think it is in the best interest of businesses to do that. What I hope to do is bring that sort of lens, that sense of partnership to the Port of Seattle. To ensure that our businesses and communities and workers are working well together. This is a time where we need to come together. If we are going to truly build back better, we've got to get on the same page, and we need to align our systems, align our workforce systems, and to ensure that resources are getting out to our communities, and that we're addressing issues and looking at where the needs are greatest. So that's the spirit and the sort of lens I will be bringing to the Port of Seattle. Crystal Fincher: [00:09:15] You've talked a lot about running because you felt like current leadership hasn't stepped up and there does need to be a change of direction. You chose to run against an incumbent, so I'm wondering why did you choose to run for the position you're running for and against the incumbent that you're running against? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:09:37] Yeah, that's a great question. The decision that I made was based off of ensuring that we have strong leadership in place, that brings a strong equity lens, that can address the needs of this moment. Crystal, I don't know if you've looked at some of the data, but just recently in March 1st, 2021, there were over a 100,000 folks who received unemployment benefits in King County. And if you look closer at those numbers, the top zip codes in King County with the highest unemployment UI insurance claims, are cities that surround the Port's largest operating site, SEA Airport. A lot of the people who live within those communities also go to work for the Port or the airport. Nearly 60% of those claims come from folks who were working in our food service industry. These are folks who are my neighbors - I live five minutes away from Sea-Tac Airport.  And I have worked closely with individuals who've been impacted by COVID-19, in my position at the County as a policy advisor. And I've led initiatives that invested $1.5 million in small businesses that have been impacted by displacement, and fundings to our community-based organizations that were on the frontlines of this pandemic. Really, these numbers and the issues are devastating. And they're devastating our communities and disproportionately BIPOC folks, immigrants, refugees, women, poor white folks with lower educational attainment. The data is showing us that, and to me, we have to have a sense of urgency to address these issues and that's what I bring. I bring that vision to the Port of Seattle, so when I was deciding to run, it wasn't necessarily me deciding to run against one particular candidate, it was running because I have a vision for the Port of Seattle. But the question about the incumbent, when you look at the incumbent that I'm running against also, we differ on a number of things. On votes that she's taken - the incumbent voted to use taxpayer's money to file a legal challenge against SeaTac's $15 minimum wage. And that is a position that I would never have taken. I stand with working families. When I look at the workforce that that $15 minimum wage was going to help, it's a workforce that looks very similar to me, that our histories are the same, my mom was once part of that workforce. So $15 minimum wage we know is not even a living wage. So taking positions like that, I think, really goes against my beliefs. Most recently, the incumbent voted against the leasing of the Duwamish Valley Community Resource Center. That resource center was going to go to creating green job programs, internship recruitment, supporting small businesses and workforce development. I just think we would have taken different votes and we bring a different vision for the Port of Seattle.  Right now, I've been talking to rideshare drivers and truck drivers, who've been sharing stories with me about how they don't have access to restrooms on the job. To me, everyone should have access to a restroom at their workplace. Truck drivers who've shared not having adequate access to testing and vaccination sites. And so these are all really issues that I would lead and ensure that we were addressing, whether that is standing up vaccination sites for truck drivers at truck stops, ensuring that they have PPE and adequate equipments to keep themselves protected. Also today, there are a number of workers at Sea-Tac who actually do not get paid $15 minimum wage, catering workers at Sea-Tac who do not get paid $15 minimum wage. I think it's these type of issues where right now, now more than ever, we need strong leadership around it, we need folks who are going to protect those workers, who are going to stand with them, and to ensure that they have the sort of support that they need to continue to help build our economy. Crystal Fincher: [00:14:39] Right. And so Stephanie Bowman is the incumbent that you are running against. Certainly you just talked about your issue with that $15 an hour vote of hers. So are you saying that you will ensure that all workers that are directly employed by the Port of Seattle, you would want to vote to ensure that they make $15 an hour at minimum? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:15:04] Absolutely. As a Port of Seattle Commissioner elected by the people, one of my top priorities would be to advocate for living wages and to support workers by showing up intentionally for them, and also co-creating with them to bring solutions. So absolutely I would definitely advocate for living wages and truly support working families. Crystal Fincher: [00:15:30] Excellent. Now there is a lot of conversation, and justifiably so, about the Port's contribution to, and ability to help fix, the amount of pollution in our region and overall. Is that a priority for you and how do you address that? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:15:53] That's a great question. I am committed to addressing that, right, as someone who lives in the airport community - working to reduce things like noise pollution from planes, and investing in quieter jets, and ensuring that we transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy - is a top priority for me. Right now there's research that has been done by the University of Washington that found a specific type of pollution in the air called ultrafine particle pollution, which is basically a pollution that has been connected to multiple types of cancers. It is a pollution that comes from aircraft that has huge health impacts for people. I know so many people in our community that live around the airport community who struggle with all types of health situations, who have high blood pressure, asthma, and we know that the aviation contributes to that.  So we have to think responsibly, move aviation to being more sustainable. There are projects that's happening right now to invest in alternative jet fuels, I'm in support of that. We need to be doing that - we need to reach the Port's Century Agenda goals to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy a lot faster. I'm in support of accelerating the implementation of sound installation programs for airport communities and advocating for federal investments in noise and emission mitigation. That's an FAA issue as well, and so I've been talking to our Congressional delegation about that. I've been endorsed by US Congresswoman Jayapal, I've been endorsed by US Congressman Adam Smith, and talked to the both of them about that.  And really, I think we need a strong regional leader in this position that's going to bring our elected officials and communities together to help address some of the most pressing issues that are impacting our community and thinking creatively about it. We shouldn't just wait on the FAA to help mitigate some of these situation, but what can we do as a Port? How can we bring our business community together and think of different pots to help address these issues. And also thinking about the communities that we are impacting, and how do we support them. Crystal Fincher: [00:18:38] You also talked about, just going back a little bit, supporting workers and certainly supporting families, supporting the region. You are very strongly in support of making sure workers for the Port of Seattle will be making $15 an hour. You also referenced a lot of the gig workers who are not directly employed by the Port of Seattle, but rely on the Port of Seattle, who are servicing and working in conjunction with rideshare drivers and other vendors. What can actually concretely be done? What could you enact to help increase their standard of living and their working conditions? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:19:27] Yeah, that's a great question. Well, one, the access to restrooms, I think is - it's one that we need to address and address that quickly. The fact that our rideshare drivers and truck drivers, both, don't have adequate access to restrooms is a big problem. It's one that I'm currently even talking to some of our port commissioners about, to help them address that. But it's also making sure that we are making the Port's operations accessible to them and transparent, that we are supporting them, providing opportunities - whether that is job training opportunities, whether that is standing up COVID testing sites or vaccination sites, providing them with the appropriate PPE so that they are protected and can keep showing up to work and doing the work, giving them the sort of tools that they need to be able to be successful on the job.  And so really, showing up for our gig workers is so so important. And being a port commissioner that listens, that brings their voices into the decision-making process. Standing up advisory groups that are made up of our gig workers, to help us make those decisions at the Port that also benefits them and benefits the businesses that are at the Port. So I would be hosting regular listening sessions and town hall meetings to have those conversations with them, in addition to attending the monthly commission meeting or study sessions. But really being able to engage with them and being intentional about it - most folks already know what their needs are and the solutions to the problem. We just have to bring folks to the table and give them the opportunity to engage with us so we can resolve some of the most pressing issues that they're facing. Crystal Fincher: [00:21:43] That makes sense. Looking at a lot of what the Port is responsible for, and the Port is a very large entity - what the Port is responsible for and just the size of the jurisdiction is quite vast. And the Port has its own police department and also interacts with Homeland Security, ICE, Customs and Border Patrol, in a variety of ways. And so how, when you consider, I guess starting off with just the issue of policing and sharing data with immigration authorities, Customs and Border Patrol. Obviously that has been something that a lot of local cities within the Port's jurisdiction have prevented. What do you think needs to be put in place? Do you think what's currently in place is adequate, and what is your stance on making sure that data isn't inappropriately shared with ICE and Homeland Security? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:22:49] Yeah. That is a great question, I think it's one that sometimes people forget that the Port - how large the Port's operations are. They manage billions of dollars, there's the partnership between the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma as well. And so, there's the marine terminals and they have a fire department, in addition to a police force. It's a good point that you bring that up, because I think sometimes a lot of people don't even realize that the Port is a government entity in a lot of ways. So that's a good point that you bring up. As far as - how does the Port engage with the community around police reform, or just thinking about the Port's police department, we have to ensure that they are accountable, that they're also listening to recommendations on the national level and locally. Also for me, as a port commissioner, it's really important to partner with that police department to ensure that we are addressing really urgent matters that face our region like human trafficking. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world today. And we are, as a state, Washington state is a hotspot for human trafficking because of the abundance of ports, the vast rural areas that we have, there's the international border with Canada. So really ensuring that we are protecting people is so so important. I've been talking to Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who've endorsed our campaign, around combating human trafficking at the Port of Seattle and to build on existing work. Right now, if you look at the Port's Century Agenda, it doesn't include language access. If we are truly wanting to combat human trafficking, we need to make sure that the Century Agenda includes language access, we have to be able to address language barriers. A lot of the times, folks end up getting trafficked or not able to report being trafficked because of language barriers, or lack of awareness to services, or the fear and suspicion of law enforcement that folks have.  So addressing that is important and I bring strong skills around that. When I was working for US Congresswoman Jayapal as her Deputy District Director, I oversaw her Constituent Services team and carried the immigration and international relations portfolio for her. Often I worked very closely with US Customs and Border Protection and our US consulates to address issues like child abduction. We worked on bringing political prisoners home and we successfully helped reunite so many families. Also I had to work with ICE when someone was detained at the Tacoma Detention Center. Constituents would call our office and want to get in contact with their relatives, figure out what sort of legal support that they can provide to them. And often I was picking up the phone and calling those agents, officers, to ensure that folks' rights were not being infringed on. So I will continue to do that, I will continue to work very closely with our immigrant advocacy organizations to ensure that our family and communities are protected and continue to address some of the most pressing issues that are facing our immigrant refugee populations. Crystal Fincher: [00:26:42] In that vein, also the use of biometrics is a big concern. Basically going and using eye scans or face scans to identify people within the airport, and that data also being fed to or shared with federal authorities. We had a conversation with another port commissioner recently, who talked about the work being done on this. And a huge concern, certainly overall and specifically impacting communities of color, is that biometrics are less accurate for people with darker skin. People are misidentified more, there are more errors. And with that information being shared with law enforcement authorities - more misidentification, and people experiencing harm and impacts and adverse effects from being misidentified. So as they consider whether or how to use that, certainly that should be a huge consideration. Do you feel like the work group, or the work that they're doing to address that right now is adequate? And what, I guess, work and protections do you feel should be put into place to make sure people are feeling secure that their data isn't being collected without their knowledge or consent, and also shared with authorities that they may also not consent to? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:28:22] That is a great question and it's one that I think we really need to ensure that we are protecting folks' information, that we are upholding privacy laws, and also working with our Congressional delegations. It is a federal issue and so as a port commissioner, it will be really important to work with those federal agencies and to work with our Congressional delegation, to ensure that information is not being breached, that folks' - whoever gets a hold of these information are not misusing it and are not profiling our communities. So that will be a priority of mine. I have experience working with our federal agencies, as well as our Congressional delegation.  And also around immigration. King County has an ordinance in place right now, King County Code 2.15, which is the immigration and language access code, which basically says that the County will not share information with federal agents, unless it's accompanied by a judicial warrant. What we know is, often when there are those sorts of protections put in place, people are - especially immigrants and refugees, are more likely to access County services, government services, healthcare services, and they're likely to report things like crimes against themselves or their community. And so for me, it will be a priority to be able to ensure that we have policies in place that are protecting the privacies of all of our residents that contribute to our economy and our whole society here. That is something that needs to be addressed and it is a federal matter, and it's one that requires partnership, and I'm prepared to do that. Crystal Fincher: [00:30:31] Well, thank you so much for joining us today. We are at our time, but I'm so happy to be able to hear from you. I guess just as a very last closing, and in evaluating this vote between you and your opponent, what do you think voters should weigh the most in making that decision? Hamdi Mohamed: [00:30:51] Yeah, no - that's a good closing sort of statement. I think what - if folks understand that we are in the middle of a pandemic, and this is a moment where we have to re-imagine and rebuild a new economy that works for all of us. And recognizing that we can't do business as usual. We truly need new leadership. We need a regional leader that will make the Port's numerous operations accessible and transparent, a leader that will be a strong voice for working families and businesses impacted by COVID-19. I will be that leader. We didn't talk about this, but I'm proud to serve on the Maritime High School Advisory Board, and will be a strong advocate for expanding educational opportunities for our youth to ensure that they are also prepared to enter the workforce. After this pandemic, we're seeing labor shortages all across this country. And so really investing in the next generation is so important.  And we're truly running a grassroots campaign. A 100% of the donations that we have received so far have come from individuals. We've been endorsed by over 30 elected officials, including US Congressman Adam Smith, Attorney General Bob Ferguson, our County Executive Dow Constantine, US Congresswoman Jayapal, and so many of our community leaders. Folks are ready to see a regional leader, and I'm ready to step up and do this work. I have the lived experience and the work experience to be a strong commissioner that works for the people that have elected me, or when I do get elected. I hope they base it on that, and they also look at records - look at the work that we've done and the facts - that will be really important. I have over 15 years of experience working in King County, and I bring the experience of advising on our County's $12 billion budget and have led initiatives that invested millions of dollars into our community. And so those are the sort of skills and work experience that I will put into the Port of Seattle. Crystal Fincher: [00:33:06] All right. Thanks for joining us and have a wonderful day. It's never been easier to access the best talent from around the world. There is too much hype around the word hybrid, and not enough thought about application. There are a lot of false paradigms around hybrid working that are not based on real evidence. If we give people of choice of when they come into the office, we have to be careful not to slide back into a “rewarding attendance over output” culture. It's dangerous for a company to make the decision to remain 100% office shift to 100% WFA. We're going to see a polarisation of companies who do hybrid well and those who don't Successful companies need to be online first organisations. Today, hybrid meetings are not the same as having everyone in the same room, but in the future technology will enable it to feel the same. Companies that get hybrid right will ensure time spent remote or in the office is maximised and effective.  If your office or remote work environment is ineffective at providing productivity and wellbeing benefits, then the same can be said about your workforce. The Office Currently, the office is better for collaboration, socialising, communication, creativity, training and development, enabling certain technical capabilities, preventing isolation, and facilitating corporate culture. WFA WFA is better for concentration, focused deep work, work life balance, wellbeing, finding purpose, feeling of autonomy, and cost savings for both employee and employer. Prior to Covid the biggest challenge people faced was their commute. We can gain 26 days per year in personal time by reducing commute. Post Covid this wellbeing benefit will have a massive impact on corporate real estate portfolios. Corporate real estate is no longer an obligatory line on the balance sheet. More and more corporates are collecting data around their portfolio and how its used. As a result of understanding these data driven insights it's inevitable that fragmented portfolios will be consolidated and the way occupiers interact with real estate will become more flexible and ad hoc.  This will result in a reduction of leased office takeup, and an increase in flex office. There is still a need for real estate, it just needs to be repurposed to meet demand. The cost savings of reducing real estate footprint is not what's going to drive a company's success and stock price growth, it's the culture shift to empowering. workplace choice and being able to attract top talent to help the company grow faster. There are a lot of great things about being an adult, such as setting our own bedtimes and owning the pet of our choice. But perhaps most importantly, with age comes the wisdom and perspective we only wish we had when we were younger. So if you had the opportunity to go back in time, what would you have liked to tell your younger self? That's what I'm going to discuss today with Mark Creedon and even though we can't go back in time, we can reflect on the hard-earned knowledge we wish we had known then. And we can even use it to inspire our future selves. What would you say to your younger self if you could? When we are young, we think we know it all. We have our whole lives ahead of us, and the exuberance and energy to go after what we want. But our 20s can also be a time of great insecurity. We are hungry and ambitious but lack the experience to know how to calculate risk properly, follow our gut or learn from our mistakes. Put simply: we don't have enough runs on the board to make fully formed decisions. But what if you could have a conversation with your bright-eyed, 20-something self? If you could have given he or she some wisdom from the future what would it be? What would you warn them against or encourage them to do more of? Here are some of the things we discuss: Look after yourself Hard work to the exclusion of all else is not the answer. Take Calculated Risks You don't save money by doing everything yourself. 5. Get a mentor; get a few mentors and be prepared to pay for them 6. Choose your friends carefully Admire rich people 8. Educate and motivate yourself Make investing a priority Don't compare your life to others, especially on social media. So in this month's Build a Business Not a Job podcast, I'm going to discuss 15 of the common success habits with Mark Creedon founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind. And if you're not in business or planning to go in one, if you're planning to be successful in your life, in your career, or as a property investor you'll definitely be listeners And then I'm going to have a chat with Mark about his new book – Have a Business not a Job and I'll get Mark to share 3 special tips or takeaways from his book you could start implementing straight away. Habits of Highly Successful People Capitalize on the time you've got. Time is your most valuable and scarcest resource. Successful people understand this and think in terms of minutes instead of days and weeks. They understand the true value of their time and manage their priorities accordingly. Understand what the most important task is that you have to do in your day. Lock that in and schedule time to work on that task first. Control your inbox. Schedule meetings as a last resort and make sure that you have a clear time frame. There's no sense in having a meeting just to have a meeting. Say “no” to more things. Business owners appreciate input from workers who know how to prioritize immediate goals. 80 percent of your results will come from 20% of your activities, so slow down and take stock of your activities and what actually is getting results. Consider batching your work. If you can do something quickly, get it out of the way. Do it, delegate it, or delete it. Know the rules of delegation. Set aside time to journal. It allows clarity of thought and the opportunity to take stock for a moment. Look after yourself, your body, your energy, and your focus. It's not a constant marathon, try taking the time in sprints instead. If you’re like me, you’ve had a harsh, even demanding voice in your head a lot of the time. Which can be useful if you want to overachieve. But it can be hell on your self-esteem, your central nervous system, and your well-being. In this show I begin by sharing that one necessity when it comes to great self-care: asking for help. I read my essay, Why (and When) It’s a Good Idea to Ask For Help. This is for you if the mere idea of asking for help curls your toes. I go on to share my own story of how I overcame a raft of negative self-talk to become truly gentle and loving with myself. Today there really isn’t a trace of it anymore. And while it took a crisis for me to take stop and change the script… I’ve got an exercise for you that will lead you to better self-talk in a matter of minutes. Here’s the journaling exercise I describe on the show. Think of a time recently when you felt pressure around your own time/commitments… when it all felt a little out of control Now journal for at least 4 or 5 minutes on each of these questions. Just have it and let your thoughts flow… Who’s making big demands of you? Why? What would happen if you didn’t deliver perfection? What would happen if you didn’t deliver at all? Do you/did you need help or instruction? Do you/did you actually need to say no and get out of it? Who am I trying to impress anyway? Who am I trying to get permission from? Drive – know where you're going Whether it is the drive to be the best in the world at a specific skill – spin bowling – or the passion to build the most user-friendly tech experience at Apple, successful people are focused on their end goal. Proven losers Once people have the ability to spring back from their losses, they are more able to take the risks and challenges life inevitably throws out. And once that mindset is in place, coupled with a focus on achievement, a loss can create a gain. Let others do their part There is a necessary time to allow others into the business and to allow them to do the job in their way. By allowing others to take the load and share their knowledge, the outcome can be greater than the sum of its parts. Avoid distractions – from their goal and in daily life Achieving a distraction-free state of flow is the best and most efficient way to work and get things done. Communicate. Without it, ‘It's like winking at a girl in the dark' Berkshire Hathaway founder Warren Buffet says communication skills are the most important traits for success. “If you can't communicate, somebody said, it's like winking at a girl in the dark,” he says. “Nothing happens.” Break the mold Successful people are often willing to stand out. Test cricketer Stuart McGill says spin legend Shane Warne “broke the mold” in cricket, not only with his spin action but also with his off-field antics. This pairing of performance and personality brought new followers to the game. Think on your feet The ability to be agile and take chances – even if they fail – is a key habit of the successful. Let's do it People who thrive see the outcome. They determine a course of action and set their minds to achieve it.  Routine is a common element for those who succeed. Yes, yes, yes, no. Make the decision Successful people are decisive.  They may not always be right, but at least they make a decision, which allows for a speedier process and new possibilities. ‘Done is better than perfect' This leads on from decisiveness. The philosophy is about achieving small steps, not about sacrificing quality. As there is no such thing as perfection – which is different for different people – many successes consider milestones and progress more important than a mythical ideal. ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again' Resilience is considered the most important characteristic for success. People will inevitably get knocked down, criticised, rejected, or considered wrong, but with stamina and grit, many people overcome. Old-fashioned hard work, turning up every day, gets results. One of the interesting benefits I experienced from the prolonged lockdowns during 2020 was that I've been working more efficiently. Prior to COVID-19, I worked from home one or two days a week and from the office the other days. But interestingly, working from home full time made me much more efficient with my use of time. So, how do you make the most use of your time? How do you make sure you're working most efficiently? That's the topic of discussion today in my monthly Build a Business, Not a Job podcast with Mark Creedon. But even if you're not in business, and even if you're not a professional, this podcast is going to be valuable, because for most of us, it seems there's never enough time in a day. However, we've all got the same 24 hours to accomplish a task, and some of us seem to be exceptionally good at it, while others seem to struggle meeting their deadlines. So, my question is, why are some people so much more efficient at using their time than others? And the answer lies in time management. Today, I'm going to share with you how successful people manage their time, so you can make the best use of yours. We all have the same amount of time but some of us squander it, waste it, don't use it efficiently, so my aim today is that at the end of this podcast that you'll be able to see how much time you have in the day and you'll find something in that will help you get more out of your day. #1 Time is your most valuable and scarcest resource You should realise how truly valuable time is. You can lose money and get it back again if you're sick you can often get your health back again but once the time has gone it is gone and is irretrievable. You'd be surprised how much you can achieve in one minute, and your health you could take some deep breath stretch and relax, in your relationships in one minute you can tell somebody that you love them. In business you can come up with a breakthrough idea in one minute. #2 Identify your most important task (MIT) and do it first. What is that project that's going to double the size of your business what is that task that he's going to get you that promotion at work, and then break it down – what domino can I tip over today that will lean on the next one and the next one? Schedule time to work on your MIT – preferably in the morning –– we are at our cognitive best for a two-hour window of time first thing in the morning. #3 Work from your calendar – not a to do list 41% of items that people have on there To Do list never get done it all. A To Do list is the graveyard of important but not urgent items. If you really want to get something done – pick a day, a time, a duration and put it in your calendar #4 There will always be more to dos I first started out five days a week wasn't enough, so I work seven days a week. When I first started out eight hours a day wasn't enough – so I worked 10 and at times 12 hours a day. #5 Always carry a notebook Maybe it's journaling, maybe it's capturing ideas words of wisdom etc Our minds are best used for processing different ideas, not for holding onto information #6 Control your inbox Shut off the notifications on your emails and go to inbox when you want to do it, not when somebody calls you. Process emails three times a day. #7 Schedule and attend meetings as a last resort You may not be in the position that you could say no to your boss, but it is likely you can say no to a lot of meetings or make them shorter meetings, stand-up meetings. If you're most productive in the morning say no to meetings in the morning. #8 Say no to everything that doesn't support your immediate goals. Thinking simply and clearly, it is hard to do.” If you wait until every possible detail is covered, you'll never get around to doing it. “If you don't succeed at first, there is no need for the F word (failure). Pick yourself up and try, try again.” Failure is part of the process. Learn from it and move on. “You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” If you're not prepared and you don't have the right mindset, luck will pass you by. “Don't become a slave to technology – manage your phone, don't let it manage you.” It's fine to use and enjoy technology, just don't let it take over. “Chance favours the prepared mind. Donald Trump is inarguably one of the most interesting personalities in the world today. Regardless of what you think of Donald Trump, you have to acknowledge that his decision to leave his highly successful day job as a property developer and run for President of the United States was gutsy. For years I used to watch him from afar, I've read his books, watched him on TV and I used to admire his supposed success. It's very different today - now he provides me with a very different type of entertainment, but I also keep learning lessons from him – more recently lessons of what one shouldn't be doing. Now before I get any hate mail, I want to acknowledge that what we're going to discuss today is not a political statement of any kind. It's just an observation of some life lessons you can learn from Donald Trump – some things you could start doing and some things you shouldn't do to help you become more successful at whatever you choose. Because I think that if you sift through all the negativity on both sides and look deeper, you will find some amazing life lessons everyone will benefit from what I'm going to discuss in today's episode of the monthly Build a Business, Not a Job podcast that I host with Mark Creedon, founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind. Donald Trump's Terrible Success Lessons Like or loathe him, and there are very few people who sit on the fence, there's no denying that the current President of the United States knows how to get people's attention. As I explained in the main introduction I'm not going to talk about Donald Trump's suitability to lead his country or the world – that's not my area of expertise – but I think he's provided a few lessons of what one could do and what one shouldn't do if you want to be successful. We know he's arrogant and Trump has been quoted as saying: “You know I'm, like, the smartest person” If you're the smartest person in your team you're in trouble “Nothing is easy – but who wants nothing?” For once this quote makes sense “I have never met a successful person that was a quitter, successful people never, ever give up.” “Always try and learn from other people's mistakes, not your own – it is much cheaper that way!” ”If you hang around with losers you become a loser.” The corollary of this is that if you want to become successful, you should hang around with successful people. “I try to learn from the past, but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the present. That's where the fun is.” Yesterday is past, and tomorrow is yet to come, so the only time that you actually have is the present. Use the moment to make smart and profitable decisions that will lead you towards success. Respect time as it is the most valuable resource available to you. “Sometimes, by losing a battle, you find a new way to win the war.” If you fail at something, remember it is only a natural process and perfection takes time. Once you fail, think of it simply as if you have discovered another path that does not lead to success. It does not mean that you are lost, it only means that you will probably choose the correct path the next time. “As long as you're going to be thinking anyway, think big.” Leave “little thinking” for people who want to accomplish little things, but not you. Success begins with thinking big. “If you're interested in balancing work and pleasure, stop trying to balance them. Instead, make your work more pleasurable.” It is important to love what you do. It is only logical that a person will be self-motivated and more likely to work harder at something they love. Loving what you do is thought to be the first factor toward making you successful at what you do. “What separates the winners from the losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate.” Change is one of the most essential and important parts of life, be it your private or professional life. It is not necessary that every individual plan will work for every different person. Winners are known to react positively to fateful situations while losers are known to panic and stall in the path. “Without passion, you don't have energy; without energy, you have nothing.” One thing that remains common in most of the success stories is the unnatural and high levels of energy that people displayed when it came to pursuing their dreams. “Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you're generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones that you don't make.” Experience is the best teacher. It teaches you anything in such a way that you understand it very well. Some of the most valuable lessons are learned through past experiences. Do you ever secretly wish that you could achieve more with your time?  You are not alone. Most people want more from their lives but simply don't know where to start. Science says that only 8 percent of people actually achieve their goals. The good news is that learning to accomplish greatness in your life is totally possible if you learn to study other successful high achievers. In today's Build a Business, Not a Job podcast that I record each month with Mark Creedon, the founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind, we are going to discuss the things that high achievers do differently to become successful. What high achievers do that others don't I've found high achievers, be they property investors, businesspeople or entrepreneurs do things in a certain way and think in a certain way. Recently, I read a number of rules that I read on a blog by Abayomi Jegede. After looking at the lives of certain great men, Jegede was able to come up with 13 rules that he says high achievers never break. He suggests that if you obey these rules, you will become a high achiever too. So let's look at them... Don't compare your life to others and don't judge them; you have no idea what their journey is all about Be yourself always and become the best version of yourself. Don't act the way you are feeling - Instead, act the way you want to feel High achievers get disappointed a lot because they fail many times, but since they are highly-optimistic people, they see an advantage in adversity and make the best of every situation. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up your present  High achievers don't go around beating themselves up for the mistakes they have made. Forgiveness is the first step to progress and only those with a strong heart can forgive themselves and those who have hurt them. Don't answer ads that promise get-rich-quick schemes because it won't be you who gets rich quick Believe me when I say this: apart from bonanzas, lottery, promos, or TV shows, there is nothing you can do in this world that gets you rich in a jiffy. You can't do everything yourself, so get help along the way Make meaningful relationships and help others get what they want.  Don't envy what others have; you don't know how they got it The truth is that you don't know how he got what he has or the price he had to pay in exchange for it. Think about this before you envy somebody. If you can't say anything nice, don't say   High achievers don't talk just because they have to say something; they talk because they have something to say. Learn to talk less and listen more. Be comfortable only outside of your comfort zone Do something every day that scares you, and break your own records each day. If you are going to jump off a bridge, make sure you know how deep the water is Many great men today are college dropouts, but they knew what they wanted and the understood the implications, so they went all-out. So, before you quit your job or quit college, and before you jump off that bridge, ask yourself this very important question: “how deep is the water?” Change only what you can change and let go of the rest You can't change everything you want to change. No matter how important it may be, sometimes it's better to do your own part and leave the coming generation to do theirs. What others think of you is none of your business  People will always talk about you, and if they don't, then you are probably not worth much. Ignore whatever anyone has to say about you and hold firm what you know and what you believe. Never test the depth of the river with both feet Spread out your risks in life. There is no way to succeed without taking risks, but it's wiser and safer to take calculated risks. Honesty is a very expensive gift. Do not expect it from cheap people The sooner you learn this, the better. Do not expect too much from people–only a few men have that virtue called integrity. Summary: There is one secret that almost every successful person knows.  This secret is very important because it's the reason they are successful in the first place.  This big secret can be summed up in the words of the mighty Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do. This podcast is in response to a listener question. She asks, “what do you mean by a creative horse?” This is a great topic as we continue our season on the horses mind. I’m very specific when I describe horses. I may say a horse has questions. or a horse is creative. I don’t want to describe a horse in a way that will pass judgement such as calling it a problem horse. A creative horse can be a horse that would traditionally be described as a problem horse, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Show Notes [03:16] Imagine you are a teacher asking questions. You will see a pattern in answers, but there might be some different answers from creative thinkers or people who see the question from a different angle. [04:19] Trainers typically get the same answers from a horse. If a horse does something unusual, that's creative. [06:28] I've been consistently using creative as a problem horse. Yet, I want to encourage creativity in my horses, just not misbehavior. [10:54] Stacy shares how Presto used creativity to get a large equine ball under his belly. [12:43] It's important to let the horses be created because that is where their brilliance is found. [12:51] When you see a horse do something amazing, it means someone has allowed the horse to express their own brilliance. [13:31] I teach horses to roll blue activity balls.
