This episode's origin comes from my time recovering from gallbladder surgery last month. I was looking for something to watch when I saw Richard Donner's TIMELINE on my Plex server. I hadn't watched the film in over 20 years... 20 YEARS?!?!?!?!... and so I thought I'd put it on to see if it was as bad as I remembered. It wasn't all that bad, but Brian Tyler's score really irritated me. So, after watching the film, I listened to both Tyler's replacement score and Jerry Goldsmith's rejected score and decided to write some notes. Well, you know me; I ended up writing about 700 words. For a brief moment, I thought about resurrecting my blog, but I hate sharing my writing, so I decided to turn it into a podcast episode. As I continued to write, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, my script was 2814 words long. In addition to writing about TIMELINE, I also wrote about action music, which led me to write about action cues that subverted the norm using two examples by Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK and MEDAL OF HONOR: FRONTLINE). Then I remembered an interview from the early 80s where Jerry Goldsmith talked about the function of film music and writing a specific action cue for the 1971 film, WILD ROVERS. So, I wrote about that. I then remembered to write about my experience at TriCon 2024 here in Kitchener last winter and discuss my newfound appreciation of Graham Revell's THE CROW. I then concluded with a birthday shout-out to David Shire, who turned 87 on July 3rd, the day of this recording. So, after finishing my FAVOURITE SCORES OF 2023 episodes, I recorded and edited this new episode, which I'm happy to share with you today. I really enjoyed the entire process of producing this episode. I liked having the opportunity to inform and educate by using specific examples instead of just doing what I've been doing over the past, however long it's been. This type of show feels more like what I do on Randy Andrew's THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS (aka SOUNDTRACK ALLEY) than a traditional CSR episode. Anyway, let me know what you think. Also, the name is temporary. I had no idea what to call what I was doing so I just called it SOUNDTRACK POTPOURRI, which is so NPR lame. Phil and Josh return for E194 of the GSP to recap a busy NASCAR Championship weekend at Phoenix, which saw Ford sweep the titles in Trucks, XFinity and Cup. Ryan Blaney used the momentum he built during the playoffs and a great car to overtake Kyle Larson late to become a Cup Series champion. Larson finished 3rd, Byron 4th and Chris Bell fell out early with brake failure. Blaney and Ross Chastain raced each other hard and a possible rivalry may be brewing with the champ and the Watermelon man who won the race. Kevin Harvick ended his full-time career with a strong seventh place finish. After two runner-up finishes at Homestead, Cole Custer broke through to win at Phoenix and get his first XFinity title to salvage a brutal year for Stewart-Haas Racing. Custer won in overtime over Sheldon Creed and championship contender Justin Allgaier. Sam Mayer finished fifth while John Hunter Nemechek's great season ended with a brutal 28th place finish. Ben Rhodes was the last man standing after a chaotic and frankly pathetic Truck Series finale at Phoenix to become a two-time series champion. Carson Hocevar dumped Corey Heim and the Tricon driver came back to clean Hocevar out. That incident brought out a yellow which likely cost Grant Enfinger the championship in the final race for GMS Racing. Kyle Busch Motorsports also ran their last Truck race after years of success. The guys give their thoughts on what transpired and the viability of the series in general. The Brazilian Grand Prix saw Fish Lips dominate and pass his BFF Lando Norris early. Aston Martin came back from hibernation while Mercedes possibly had their worst race in the last 10 years at Sao Paulo on the heels of winning the pole and race last year. On the NFL beat, both Phil and Josh's teams are on bye but plenty took place with the injury bug rearing its ugly head. Fantasy teams are definitely being affected by said injuries. The guys preview the Jaguars/49ers match-up and Chase Young's debut in the burgundy and gold. A brief GSP Roundup covers the WEC finale at Bahrain along with the post-season test along with previews of MotoGP/Moto2 at Malaysia and NHRA season finale at Pomona before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.

Scott Zipadelli, 2018 Truck Series champion and current TRICON Garage crew chief for Corey Heim, joins Davey Segal this week (6:45) ahead of the NCTS regular season finale and subsequent push for the playoffs. They discuss what sets Heim apart from the countless other drivers Zipadelli has worked with in the past, the adjustment of working with a significantly younger driver, the pressure that comes with performing at such a high level every single week and if he likes entering the postseason as one of the favorites for the championship. Zipadelli also details his first time crew chiefing in NASCAR's national series for Ward Burton in 2000 at Darlington, making the move from Connecticut to North Carolina, why his career as a driver didn't pan out, working with Mike "Magic Shoes" McLaughlin, the countless drivers he's crew chiefed for in the past and who stands out most to him. He also discusses the triumph of winning the 2018 Truck Series championship with Brett Moffitt and Hattori Racing Enterprises, the fun times they shared together, why he wore a SpongeBob firesuit with Ben Kennedy, his most memorable victories, if people ever confuse him with brother Greg, his favorite tattoo and realistic expectations for the playoffs with Heim and the No. 11 TRICON team. Davey also recaps a hectic Pocono weekend, previews a hot trip to Richmond and Papa Segal pays homage to a legendary woman and the No. 94.
