What's more British than the British royal family? More Spanish than the Spanish Monarchs? More Norse than the King of Norway? Well, a lot of things actually. In fact, nearly all of the 10 remaining hereditary monarchs of Europe have more German DNA than they do local. For centuries, royals almost exclusively married other, foreign royals. They rarely mixed their blue blood with people native to the Kingdoms they ruled over. What's more, when dynasties died out (often from excessive inbreeding) foreign royal houses put their own seconds sons on the throne, establishing new, entirely alien dynasties. Modern royal families try to brand themselves as throughly native and in touch with the common people. And if they ever spit into a test tube and sent it off for a DNA test, they would probably never publish the results. But, by looking back at their family trees, we can get a pretty good idea of their heritage. So let's find out just when and how the Swedish got so French, the Dutch got Argentinian, and everyone got so German! This week we start with the World Cup final. Spain beat Argentina, Argentina's players started fights during the game, declined to return the guard of honour as Spain lifted the trophy, and the internet went into overdrive. We are not a football podcast, but what happened afterwards is worth examining: within days, the anti-Argentina sentiment online had reached a scale that Argentinians themselves found bewildering and disproportionate. They are not entirely wrong about that. But their response, fighting back and dismissing it as manufactured conspiracy, is exactly the wrong one.The concept that links Argentina, Israel, and a few other cases we discuss is siege mentality: the collective belief that the rest of the world has negative intentions towards your group, leading to a closing of ranks, a dismissal of outside criticism, and a retreat into tribal identity. It explains why Argentina cannot seem to understand why the world found its football team unlikeable this summer. It explains far more about Israel than any individual policy decision can. And it explains why, in both cases, the countries concerned are actively damaging their own long-term interests while convinced they are defending them.We discuss how siege mentality develops, how it spreads from the most hardline members of a society to the reasonable centre under sufficient pressure, and why it is particularly tragic in Israel's case, given how much diplomatic capital was spent in the years before October 7th building exactly the international relationships that the subsequent reaction has now destroyed. The question is not whether the feeling is understandable. It usually is. The question is whether it is constructive. Its job is to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technology, and to check that nuclear material is not used for military purposes, including nuclear weapons. Grossi, a former Argentinian diplomat, was appointed in 2019 and has steered the IAEA through multiple challenges. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, concerns were raised about the prospect of nuclear weapons being used, but also about Ukraine's nuclear power plants coming under attack.The organisation's resources were stretched further still when the recent Middle East conflict began. France, Argentina, Spain and England were kept apart by a new seeding system and it has delivered a semi-final line-up regarded as the strongest in World Cup history. France face Spain tonight at 11pm UAE time in Arlington, Texas. France striker Kylian Mbappe is fit and expected to start, but Spain have conceded only one goal in seven matches. Tourette syndrome is a motor disorder that begins in childhood or adolescence. Characterized by movement tics and at least one vocal tic, it's often portrayed as unrestrained swearing. However, coprolalia only affects ten percent of people with Tourette's. Datshiane Navanayagam talks to women from Argentina and the UK about their mission to talk about this widely misunderstood condition.Lauren Wyatt says the most difficult part of having Tourette's is the public perception and reaction. Lauren says she experiences harassment almost every time she goes out with people mimicking tics, threatening her, or sometimes even throwing things. She's part of a campaign by Tourette's Action in the UK – #NoChoice – which is highlighting Tourette's as a medical condition. Lauren says she lives in constant pain due to her tics which are out of her control and have damaged her body beyond repair.Belén Prieto is an Argentinian psychologist currently living and working in Spain.
