Dr. Welt emphasizes the importance of regular cancer screening for women with infertility or early menopause, especially if they have a family history of cancer. STORY 7: Personalized flu shots closer after major breakthrough Researchers have made a breakthrough in personalized flu vaccines by identifying biomarkers that gauge an individual's ability to resist infection. This discovery could revolutionize vaccination programs, allowing for tailored vaccine doses based on a person's immune response. They found that current vaccine response assessments may not accurately predict immunity, especially for those with high pre-vaccination antibody levels. The identified biomarkers offer a more sophisticated approach to assessing vaccine effectiveness. The researchers aim to develop personalized flu vaccines and diagnostic tests based on these biomarkers, reducing costs and increasing protection against infection. The findings will be presented at the European Society of Human Genetics conference, signaling a significant advancement in personalized healthcare. We'll have final thoughts after this. Four students from Maxwell High School of Technology in Lawrenceville, Georgia, are heading to Houston on April 19 to offer suggestions in response to some of NASA's biggest challenges as part of the NASA HUNCH program. This is the first year schools from Georgia have been invited to participate in the program, which allows high school students to develop solutions to problems posed on the International Space Station program that are not vital for NASA engineers to work on. The problems become new challenges for the students to address in the areas of design and prototype, video and media, sewn flight articles, flight configuration, software, hardware, and biomedical science. In most situations, using the words “high school” and “food fight” in the same sentence would not necessarily portend to a positive community event. This, however, is not one of those situations. Culinary students from Gwinnett County high schools in Georgia will compete in a "food fight" to create dishes to feed the food insufficient in the community. The schools with culinary education programs will prepare 10 gallons of a creamed, protein-based product with vegetables that go over rice, potatoes or pasta that will be judged by Chef Hank Reid of the nonprofit Lettum Eat. The top two dishes will be recognized, with the rest of the food available to Reid for use in his food truck. Lettum Eat provides fresh meals for the food insufficient in Gwinnett County. The competition is also an opportunity for the students to give back to the community and consider food service as a career path. The Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) Foundation has partnered with Gwinnett Technical College and Atlanta Technical College to create a certification program for natural gas technicians, in response to a growing need for a new generation of technicians due to retirements. The Technical College System of Georgia received a $400,000 grant from the AGL Foundation to update facilities and equipment and support financially struggling students. Interested students can find registration information on the two colleges' websites. Brookwood celebrated Senior Night with a 10-3 win over Dacula in boys lacrosse on Thursday. Greater Atlanta Christian's powerhouse volleyball program has a new head coach. VanderPol led the Spartans to the Class AAAAA state championship in 2022 – with Lee as an assistant — and the AAA state title in 2021. Prior to joining GAC last season, Lee coached from 2019 to 2021 at Johns Creek. She also has coached club volleyball at 575 Volleyball and A5 South. Lee played college volleyball from 2015-18 at Georgia State, leading the Panthers in attacking her final two seasons and tallying 818 career kills. Despite being the third-largest fast-food chain in the US, with more than 2,700 restaurants, only a few of these are overseas. The move is aimed at testing how Chick-fil-A will perform in international markets to learn and innovate, according to CEO Andrew Cathy. Chick-fil-A has previously launched an expansion in South Africa that lasted five years, and in 2019 it opened but soon closed a London-area restaurant due to protests about anti-gay marriage statements made by Chick-Fil-A's former CEO. Gwinnett Technical College has experienced a surge in enrollment for the third consecutive semester, with a nearly 10% increase in enrollment numbers for the 2023 spring semester compared to last year. Gwinnett Tech's President, Glen Cannon, credits the increase to the opening of the new Emerging Technologies building and the renovation of other buildings, the Dual Enrollment programs for high school students, and the expansion of academic programs to feed high-demand careers. The enrollment growth indicates that Gwinnett Tech provides the skills needed in today's competitive job market and is on a growth trajectory for the future. A owner of house in Buford that was undergoing work arrived on Friday afternoon to find firefighters battling a blaze at the home. A child who lived in another house called 911 at 5:49 p.m. to report that the house on the 2000 block of Appling Circle in Buford was on fire. A dispatcher could hear explosions and popping sounds during the 911 call. Crews arrived five minutes later to find the carport of the single-story house on fire. A photo released by the fire department shows flames had spread into the house. Crews arrived five minutes later to find the carport of the single-story house on fire. A photo released by the fire department shows flames had spread into the house. Crews used two 1-and-three-quarters-inch attack lines to battle the fire. Firefighters were able to get inside the house and confirm no one was inside and the fire was under control by 6:09 p.m. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire has not been determined. Gwinnett County police have arrested two people after an investigation into a fentanyl overdose case that involved a 16-year-old female victim. Lawrenceville resident Drolvin Esau Calix-Rodriguez, 21, and Norcross resident Elizabeth Faye Elliott, 19, were arrested on Tuesday. The overdose that police were investigating involved counterfeit Percocet fentanyl. Calix-Rodriguez faces multiple charges, including two counts of sale of a Schedule I or II controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, and possession of a stolen firearm during commissions of a crime. Meanwhile, Elliott faces a sale of a Schedule I or II controlled substance charge. Police are using the arrests to remind residents about state laws surrounding medical amnesty and access to Naloxone, which is a drug used to counter the effects of an overdose. GNR Public Health offers free training on how to use NARCAN, which is another name for Naloxone at 52 Gwinnett Drive, Suite A in Lawrenceville. The Gwinnett County Police Department does work with the county's District Attorney's Office to charge and prosecute people for charges related to overdoses, including felony murder, in an effort to fight drug trafficking in the county. A Gwinnett County Public Schools bus driver quit his job just over two weeks before police arrested him on child molestation and public indecency charges. Former bus driver Steven Wilkins resigned from his job on February 10, according to GCPS officials, and he was subsequently arrested by Gwinnett County police on Monday. A parent had raised concerns to Gwinnett County Police about Wilkins' behavior, prompting an investigation, Suwanee Elementary School Principal Mary B. Taylor told parents in a letter. GCPS officials said Wilkins was removed from driving his bus route as soon as the parent raised their concerns about his behavior. District officials said the parent's complaint and Wilkins' arrest serve as an example of why they said parents should report any suspicious behavior that they see taking place. Wilkins was still being held in the Gwinnett County Jail as of Friday. More than a month after police arrested one suspect in the murder of a man who died after he was shot in the Norcross area last November, investigators are asking the public for information about another suspect. Lawrenceville resident Alinton Joel Riveria-Zuniga was shot on Estates Court in unincorporated Norcross on Nove, ber 27 and later died from his injuries at a hospital. Police arrested Lawrenceville resident Jose Caraballo on January 18 and charged him with felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during a felony in connection with the shooting. Now police are looking for an additional suspect in Zuniga's murder, and here are a least two possible names that officials said this suspect has gone by. Detectives believe the suspect has used the name Brayan Duarte and Brayan Sanchez. If anyone has any information, they are asked to please call Gwinnett Police or Crime Stoppers. Gwinnett Technical College is set to open a gleaming new facility, and the three-story building — dedicated to computer information systems, cybersecurity and emerging technologies training — will be complemented by other renovations and improvements on campus. Classes in the 82,000-square-foot facility are set to begin this week. The $42 million building will house the computer science and gaming departments, a cybersecurity war room, gaming technologies room, 29 classrooms and an eSports lab. The construction of the new building set off a domino effect for other buildings on campus. In addition to the new building, Cannon is particularly enthused about renovations taking place in the college's main building and the resurfacing of parking lots on campus. According to a release from Gwinnett Tech, other improvements on campus include the construction of a new “quad” area near Building 100 and the new facility; the renovation and expansion of the One-Stop area; a new entrance for the library, with more computer stations and the creation of the Center for Teaching Excellence; and a “facelift” for the student Life Center. Cannon added that almost all of the planning and design phases of the project were completed during the COVID pandemic. Families choose private schools for a variety of reasons, one of which is the parents themselves attended an independent school and wanted their children to have a similar experience. There are a number of students at Greater Atlanta Christian whose parents also went to private school, but more than half of the students at GAC come from what is termed “first-time private-school families.” When asked what often goes into the decision to enroll children in a private school like GAC for the first time, Dr. Katherine White, GAC's vice president of advancement, pointed to several factors, a number of which can apply to just about any independent school. White also pointed to the consistency in curriculum, the spirit of collaboration and the feeling students have of being part of a small but significant community. GAC has grown a great deal since its founding in 1968 with some 150 students, and even though the student body now numbers in the 1,500s (with some 650 in the high school), the determination to offer small class sizes has not changed over the last seven decades. GAC also has an exemplary graduation rate of 100% and White said that 100% of GAC grads go on to continue their education after high school. Gwinnett-based Rainbow Village, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of families experiencing homelessness, recently announced the addition of three new board members. The new members are Deon Tucker, Susie Collat and Deborah Latham. Deon Tucker is Georgia Power's Metro North Regional Director. She leads the company's external affairs activities for DeKalb, North Fulton, Gwinnett and Rockdale counties. In addition to her new role with Rainbow Village, Tucker serves on the board of directors for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, Council for Quality Growth, Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation and Gwinnett Technical College. Susie Collat is the former owner of two highly successful businesses — Mayer Electric Supply Company, Inc. and Peachtree Awnings. Rainbow Village officials said she has a non-traditional perspective of retirement as she shifts her view from the corporate world to her community. In addition to serving as a Rainbow Village Board Member, she currently serves on the advisory board of the Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett Board of Directors — where she was president for five years. Deborah Latham, who is newly retired, founded Georgia Tank Lines in 1996. As CEO, she helped fuel the expansion of her trucking company that transported gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and ethanol. In addition to her new role on the Rainbow Village board, Deborah has served on the boards of various nonprofit organizations — including National Association of Women Business Owners, Visions Anew and Good Mews, among others.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A driver was killed Sunday night when the vehicle they were driving left a roadway and hit a mobile home in Buford, injuring the people inside, according to Gwinnett County police. Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said Jordan Gonzalez was driving west on Horizon Parkway when he was unable to stay on the road as he was approaching Boulder Way. The intersection is located in the Countryside of Gwinnett mobile home community. Gonzalez's vehicle went into the front yard of a mobile home on Boulder Way and hit a tree before slamming into another mobile home located down the street. The police department's Accident Investigation Unit is handling the investigation into the accident. Valle said in addition to the car's collision with the mobile home, debris from the vehicle and the tree also hit three vehicles that were parked in the driveway of the second mobile home. When Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure saw the video of Memphis police officers beating Tyre Nichols, it stirred feelings he had not felt in more than 30 years. McClure said the video of Nichols being beaten and sustaining injuries that he later died from shocked and upset him. When was the last time he felt that upset over a video from a police beating? It was the video of Los Angeles police beating Rodney King in 1991 — although McClure said the Nichols video was worse. McClure, along wit other law enforcement personnel discussed issues facing law enforcement and how they have tried to make inroads in the community during the panel at the Gas South District Speakers series. Fox 5 anchor Courtney Bryan moderated the panel discussion. The panel discussed tools, such as an ATF database that Gwinnett police have used to help discover links between gun-wielding people they have arrested and crimes in other states, as well as outreach efforts to young people — such as the Sheriff's Cup football game — to try prevent kids from being lured into joining gangs. But, the event was held weeks after the death of Nichols, with news about Memphis police officers being fired and charged with crimes stemming from the incident coming out since then. Near the end of the panel discussion, Bryant asked the panelists about the Nichols case. GBI Director Michael Register stated that it angered him, and that few get more angry about seeing police brutality than those who have to get up and put on the uniform the next day and try to rebuild the trust in police that has been eroded. McClure offered an apology despite the incident happening in Memphis, and talked about how these officers actions undermined the trust that police have tried to rebuild nationwide in light of various police brutality issues. Georgia lawmakers want to increase the sentence for gang recruitment activities as part of a tough-on-crime push under the Gold Dome this legislative session. A new state Senate bill would increase the penalties for recruiting someone to join a gang or participate in gang activity through mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines that judges would have to follow in most cases. Sponsored by Senator Bo Hatchett Senate Bill 44 has the backing of Governor Brian Kemp and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. The bill requires judges to impose at least a five-year prison sentence for violation of the law. If the person who has been recruited to the gang is under 17 years of age or has a disability, the mandatory minimum penalty is steeper — at least 10 years for the first offense. The legislation provides some exceptions to the mandatory minimum sentences, including if the accused has not already been convicted of a felony or if the judge decides that “the interests of justice will not be served.” It also provides an exception to the minimum sentencing rules if the accused helps with identifying and convicting other gang members. Not everyone agrees that the bill's sentences for gang recruitment would help solve Georgia's crime problem. Senate Democrats would prefer to reduce the number of guns on the street in Georgia and increase community investments in mental health and violence-prevention programs, according to a legislative agenda released Tuesday. The bill has a strong shot of success in what has been a slow start to the legislative session. Twenty-two Senate Republicans have signed on as co-sponsors. The top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team couldn't capitalize on early victories in suffering a 4-3 loss to Number 2 seed Keiser University of Florida in a down-the-wire final of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's inaugural NAIA Indoor Championship on Sunday night in Overland Park, Kansas. The loss ends the Grizzlies' historic 173-match winning streak, which had been the longest active winning streak in collegiate sports and the history of collegiate tennis. Those winning ways spanned seven undefeated seasons and dual matches since April 3, 2015. On the women's side, The Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team valiantly fought to the bitter end, nearly completing a dramatic singles comeback in a 4-3 loss to Keiser University during Sunday's championship match of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association's inaugural NAIA Indoor Championship. The finale featured a matchup of the NAIA's top two teams, which also happened to be the top two seeds in the weekend tournament. Sunday's loss ended the Grizzlies' 63-match winning streak, dating back to March 27, 2019. The two teams look to start new winning streaks this weekend. The GGC women will host Emory at the GGC Tennis facility on Saturday, while the men will be hosting The Citadel. Gwinnett Technical College recently named Amber Walden, Humanities Program Director, the school's Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year. Walden, who was born and raised in Gwinnett County, now lives in Lawrenceville. She is an active member of the local arts scene and is currently organizing and developing a L.A.R.P. (or live-action role play) organization. Walden said she discovered her love of teaching during a graduate assistantship and quickly found that she loved teaching. Her passion, she said, is helping students to learn, grow, achieve, and succeed. The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction began in 1991 and is designed to recognize and honor technical college instructors who contribute significantly to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Less than two weeks after stepping down at Parkview, Eric Godfree is a Gwinnett head football coach again. Godfree was announced Tuesday as the head coach at North Gwinnett, where he replaces the outgoing Bill Stewart. Stewart left North to become an analyst on the Georgia Tech football coaching staff. Godfree accepted the North job when he resigned from Parkview, but the two sides couldn't make the hire official until Tuesday when the Gwinnett County Public Schools' school-to-school transfer window opened. Before taking the North job, Godfree had deep ties to Parkview, his alma mater. He was a Parkview assistant from 1999-2003 and spent the last nine seasons as head coach of the Lilburn school, going 70-37. He won two region titles in that span and led three of his teams to the state quarterfinals, including one Final Four team. Parkview features a large number of Georgia's top underclassmen recruits and figures to be one of the state's top teams next season, but Godfree couldn't pass up the opportunity at North. Godfree, a 1994 Parkview grad who played college football at Presbyterian, spent 10 years as head coach at Loganville before being hired at Parkview to replace legendary coach Cecil Flowe. His wife, Jenell, was formerly head volleyball coach at Parkview, and his daughters Jordan (a 2021 Parkview grad) and Brooke (a Parkview senior) played volleyball at the school. The couple's youngest child, son Jacob, is a rising ninth-grader who plays football. While Godfree said he wasn't looking to leave Parkview when North reached out, the timing works out well for his family with his middle daughter graduating Parkview in May and his son entering high school in August. Whats the story on Crave Pie, how did they thrive when the economy collapsed in 2008 and what words of inspiration does owner Brian Carson share with us. All is revealed in this exclusive! Web: www.cravepie.com Follow: @cravepie About: Crave Pie began in 2010 when, after being laid off from a corporate job of 20 years, I found myself standing at a crossroads. I could, I realized, continue down a familiar path that I knew led to a place which would not make me happy or I could, in the words of Robert Frost, take “the road less traveled” into the unknown. Faced with that decision, I decided to go to culinary school. I entered Gwinnett Technical College with a passion for savory cooking and a complete disdain for baking. I hadn't learned how to bake at my grandmothers side, nor did I inherit family heirloom recipes like many bakers do and so I dreaded Baking 101. However, I chose to forge ahead in the face of my fear and for the practical final exam I baked an apple pie from scratch. As fate would have it, that experience would prove pivotal in my journey. Suddenly my disdain for baking was gone and I found myself entirely enchanted with all things pie! I fell in love with pie, its versatility, and the endless possibilities that present themselves... from sweet to savory, and from season to season. After deciding that I wanted to devote my energies to pie creation, I left school and spent the next 9 months learning and practicing the craft. Then, one day I received a gift that would change my life. Just a few days before my husband, Greg, was to be deployed with the Army National Guard, I walked into my kitchen to find a huge industrial sized garbage can with a bow on it. Putting aside my initial irritation that he had put a gigantic garbage can in the middle of my kitchen I opened the lid and discovered that it was filled with professional pie making tools! It was in that moment that I knew it was time to take action and follow my passion, so I put my trust in God and took a leap of faith. Nothing brings people together quite like food prepared with love. Today, nearly a decade later, Crave Pie Studio stands in historic Downtown Duluth spreading The Good News of Pie and striving to make the world a better place by bringing people together.
