I could have killed myself. I could have killed someone else. I’ve done a lot of inner work the past 2 years. I’ve dealt with my demons and told them to fuck off. Our mind is a beautiful thing that surpresses our trauma so we can function but eventually- we unravel. And for me, that meant wreckless behavior. I could have lost it all before I had it. I would drink myself into oblivion and drive. I would fucking DRIVE! I was depressed. I had an eating disorder and list of other things that happened in a short span of 1year. I was drowning, but of course my Instagram feed looked great. I realize in publicizing my trauma I’m putting my business out there. In a time where people do it for clout, attention, or as an act of desperation I’m doing this shit because I’m fucking strong now. There’s hope. If you find yourself in a dark hole and feel like this is it, ITS NOT! Life is beautiful! YOU are worthy and deserving of everything good in this life and it WILL get better. I’m a product of it. #tellYourDemonsToGoFUCKTHEMSELVES

How to Dress an Egg: Suprising and Simple Ways to Cook DinnerBy Ned Baldwin & Peter Kaminsky Intro: Welcome to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book with Suzy Chase. She's just a home cook in New York City, sitting at her dining room table, talking to cookbook authors.Ned Baldwin: I'm Ned Baldwin. My first cookbook is How to Dress an Egg.Suzy Chase: For more Cookery by the Book, and to see what recipes I made out of this cookbook, head on over to CookerybytheBook on Instagram. Now for my quarantine question round. On Instagram, you wrote on your Houseman Restaurant account, "We're closing today. No takeout, no delivery. Don't know for how long. Looks like residents are going to be cooped up for some days. I'll be in the restaurant through tomorrow, closing things down, dealing with perishables, et cetera. We plan to reopen in whatever form is appropriate as soon as we can. We'll miss you." So, that was on March 17th. How are things going for you now as a restaurant owner in the epicenter, in New York City?Ned Baldwin: Yeah. It makes me sad to hear that. Well, we're still closed. I'm still not doing takeout. Every day, several times a day, I do the thought experiment about what it would feel like to do takeout, and who it would benefit, and at what risk. I mean, I have to say I kind of love working under adverse circumstances. Probably if I didn't, I wouldn't work in restaurants at all. You know, there was a blizzard a couple years ago. We were the only restaurant in the neighborhood open. My wife was hosting. She doesn't know how to do that. My daughter was busing tables. The guy who owns a suit shop next door was mixing drinks. He does not know how to mix drinks. It was me and one other cook. And because we were the only restaurant open, and nobody wanted to go very far, we were crazy busy, and it was one of my favorite nights that we've had at the restaurant. It was super fun. I think we did 80 covers, me and another cook.Ned Baldwin: And I would love nothing more than to serve the community in that way under these circumstances, but these are not the same. My chef de cuisine has a child, and I have two. I think the best thing that I can do right now... As much as I'd love to be providing Houseman's roast chicken to the people, the best thing we can do is be closed, and go to the grocery store infrequently, and encourage our customers to do the same. And, you know. I'm spending my time talking about this cookbook, which I'm excited about, and I think is an appropriate tool for the time.Suzy Chase: What dish are you making at home that is getting you through this time?Ned Baldwin: That's a fun question. I think one of the funny consequences of sort of living the life that I've carved out for myself is I'm like a gastro thrill seeker. I want maximum spice and acid and crunch and creaminess, and a panoply of spices. I mean, I'm actually not bored during this time at all, but when it comes time to eat, I get excited about it. That's probably no different from any other day of the week. And my family are normal people when it comes to food, so for them, I cook a recipe from the book maybe twice or three times a week, and that's the roasted broccoli.Ned Baldwin: Everybody loves broccoli, and actually, that recipe is in the book because my family likes it so much. That's broccoli kind of cooked like it's meat. So, salted a little bit, broken up. I show a way to cut it nicely, that has these sort of sweeps out of the dock, in a hot pan and then in the oven, and it's done. That's just sort of fun. My kids love crunchy stuff, and they also love browned stuff, so the heads have a lot of caramelization, and the stalks still have a good amount of crunch in them. So, that's what I'm cooking for the family. I mean, that's not all, but that's a thing that everybody seems to like a lot.Ned Baldwin: And then for myself, I can't seem to get enough of curry flavors right now. Curry is a broad, loose, kind of flabby term that describes a whole bunch of different combinations of spices, depending on where you are and what you're doing. I've been doing it with chick peas, with pork, with chicken and lots of spices, and with fried leeks. I mean, the sky's the limit.Ned Baldwin: Actually, I discovered something super fun a couple of days ago. I was breaking down a hangar steak, and hangar steak has this sort of ribbon of super tough, chewy... Like you can't eat it the way it is when you cook a steak... gristle. And you know, I removed it, and I looked at it for a second and thought, "Wait a minute. I love tendon." You know, in Chinese restaurants? And I love pork skin, and all that kind of stuff. And this piece, it's that, so it just needs to be cooked differently. So I immediately put it in a pot with ginger and shallot and garlic and chile, and with some onions and a bunch of other stuff, and braised it for two or three hours. And, wow. What a revelation, and super fun. I guess that's kind of the sort of nonsense I'm getting up to.Suzy Chase: You are a gastro thrill seeker. I had no idea you were going to say that. That's so funny. Hey, I made your broccoli last night. It's life changing.Ned Baldwin: Cool.Suzy Chase: I'm never making broccoli any other way ever again.Ned Baldwin: I love hearing that.Suzy Chase: It's so good. So, on to the cookbook.Ned Baldwin: Mm-hmm (affirmative).Suzy Chase: I love that this cookbook is all about cooking simple things. At first glance I thought, "Oh, this is a restaurant cookbook," but it's really not. Can you talk a little bit about that?Ned Baldwin: Yeah, sure. So, I was 36 years old when I set foot as an employee in a restaurant environment first, and preceding that, I was both an impassioned home cook, and a great eater in New York City restaurants, and other cities' restaurants that I managed to get into. I just love eating, and I love cooking. And so, I was a home cook for more years than I even still have been a restaurant cook.Ned Baldwin: I ended up working in the industry and opening Houseman Restaurant five years ago, and so I've been a restaurant cook for maybe 10 years, and the way I kind of feel... You know. I do my best to be a great restaurant cook when I'm in the restaurant. But also, there's a part of me always that's like a home cook spy in the restaurant world, and sort of picking apart, "Oh, that thing, the way that we do that." And that would be totally useless at home. No home cook would ever do that. It's timely. It requires unusual equipment, and just not useful at home at all. And then, other things, a few here and there, I think, "Wow. God, I wish I had known that when I was only cooking at home." So, almost like a home cook spy in the restaurant world.Ned Baldwin: And the book, it isn't all stuff that I learned in the restaurants that I thought would be useful at home, but some of it is. The broccoli, for example, just was like, "I know my kids are going to like broccoli cooked like this." Like our roast chicken recipe, which I think is one of the more important chapters in the book, was born from cooking chicken in several different restaurants.Ned Baldwin: Restaurants are funny. You go in and you sit down, and there's certain windows of time that the kitchen has to produce food. Like, you want your entrée between 15 and 30 minutes from when you sit down in the restaurant, and if it's more than that, a customer starts to get kind of anxious. So, roasted chicken takes a long time, and so a lot of restaurants mitigate that by precooking or par cooking their chickens, which I think decreases its quality by 15 to 40%, right off the bat with that.Ned Baldwin: And so, I wanted to cook chicken from cold, like take it out of the fridge to done in 12 to 18 minutes. And just kind of goofed around with a bunch of different ways of doing it, and finally discovered that I could get certain size chickens and cook them from raw pretty efficiently. That translated to the home very well, and it also, like there was a big a-ha moment when I was... I think I was at Craft and I saw cooks doing this. That they used the floor of the oven. They lift the rack up to the higher shelf, and just put pans on the floor of the oven.Suzy Chase: What does that do? Does it bring more heat underneath the chicken?Ned Baldwin: Yeah. The way ovens are designed, there's almost all ovens, the heat comes from an element that's underneath the metal pan on the floor of the oven. And so, if you set the pan on the floor, that element is like a low temperature burner. So, it's sort of like having your pan on a low flame while also in the oven. And what that does, if you're cooking something wet... Like any kind of meat, chicken... the liquid that comes out of it while it's cooking that would otherwise inhibit the skin from crisping properly, like if it was on a shelf in the middle of the oven, it cooks that water off really fast. So, one of the things people love about our roasted chicken is the skin is like a cracker. Crispy. Really, really crispy, and nicely browned.Suzy Chase: So, speaking of your chicken, in 2015, Pete Wells wrote in The New York Times, "Houseman is a new restaurant where you can get, among other good things, an excellent roast chicken. 'Big whoop,' you say. 'I can get excellent roast chicken at a place in my neighborhood.' Well, no you can't," he wrote, "Unless you live across the street from Barbuto. But let's not argue." And then Pete even wrote, "In restaurants, I manage to get a chicken like this roughly once out of every 50 attempts." That is some high praise right there. After he wrote that, were people just coming in for your chicken all the time?Ned Baldwin: We sold a gazillion, gazillion roast chickens. Yeah. Yeah. It's impossible to work at Houseman, and not end up being a great chicken cook. And for what it's worth... And I kind of love that this is true... all my cooks, when they cook chicken at home, they do it the same way they do it in the restaurant. Because it works, and it translates at home.Suzy Chase: So, you know this to be true. If you can learn to cook one thing well, and make a recipe truly your own, you have opened the door to creating a lifetime's worth of recipes. What's the first thing you learned to cook well?Ned Baldwin: Oh. Fun question. Well, that's an opportunity to talk about my wife's father, my father in law, who is one of my best friends in the world, and who is just a spectacular cook. I think my love of home cooking... I probably would have been there anyway, but boy did it get a chance to emerge, in cooking and building a relationship with him. He cooks everything well. His name's Jay. We did moules, just like Belgians do mussels. One of my great loves in cooking and eating is finding a thing that I thought I didn't like, and just falling in love with it.Ned Baldwin: I actually quoted him at the beginning of the book, saying, "If you think you don't like something, you probably just haven't had it cooked properly." That's his perspective.Suzy Chase: True.Ned Baldwin: Which is great. What he's saying is it's a fundamental openness to all food on the planet. And I make those mussels all the time. And then, even more impactful was lobster bisque that he made, that just blew my doors off. So delicious and rich, and it was about squeezing flavor out of every step of the way. Breaking the lobster down, and crushing the shells and roasting them, and reducing and roasting and reducing, and flaming with cognac. I mean, it was great. Just great. And I've done some version of that recipe hundreds and hundreds of times now.Suzy Chase: So, the one thing I've been cooking more than anything else during quarantine has been eggs. We are going through eggs like they're going out of style. Would you share the story of the dressed egg?Ned Baldwin: Shortly after the restaurant opened, I was going to put a dish on the menu called oeuf mayonnaise, which is a boiled egg in some kind of delicious mayonnaise. I had gathered some ingredients, and was on my way down the stairs to where the food processor was to make the mayonnaise. I was just literally halfway down the stairs with an armload of stuff, and stopped and thought, "Why does this need to be mayonnaise?" Walked back upstairs, and made the following. I made something that we now call egg candy, which is almost like a slurry of capers and anchovies, chile, lemon zest, some fried herbs, and a lot of olive oil. And then we made some fried leeks and some fried parsley. That was the first one.Ned Baldwin: I put it on the menu. It was one of those lovely moments where it was like, "What are we going to call it?" "I don't know." "Oh, let's call it a dressed egg." And then it became one of our bestselling things, and one of the things that's consistently been in the restaurant since we opened. I sort of recognized a framework, like your seven and a half minute eggs are gorgeous. Jammy and delicious all by themselves or with a little bit of salt, but then if you dress them up... And you can dress them up a million ways.Suzy Chase: So, tell us about your co-author, Peter Kaminsky, and how he influenced you.Ned Baldwin: Well, Peter is a cookbook rockstar. He's written with a zillion chefs who are better than me. I honestly... You know, I just have to say, between Gerardo and Pete and Christopher Sheinlin and Melissa Hamilton, who photographed the book, and Rux Martin, who edited the book, and David Black, who's our agent... Every minute that I think about this team, I say the same thing. I don't know how the hell I got on this team. It's just an amazing crowd of people.Ned Baldwin: You know, it started with Pete. Pete came to the restaurant. He read Pete Wells' review. As he likes to say, he's not really a review chaser. He wrote the Underground Gourmet for New York Magazine. He was a food reviewer there for some years. I think he's sort of done with the next trendy restaurant, but he said he thought he found something in Pete Wells' review that made him excited about trying Houseman, and he came, and [inaudible 00:13:16]. Pete has a parallel life as a fishing writer, and I mentioned earlier, I'm totally obsessed with fishing. It's all I want to do if I'm not with my family or cooking.Ned Baldwin: And so, when I saw he was coming in, I had actually just read a book that he wrote, which is just lyrically beautiful, about fishing in Montauk in the fall. It's called The Moon Pulled Up an Acre of Bass. I had just read it for the second time about a month before, and so I... You know. Normally if I recognize somebody in the restaurant, if they're not a friend, I leave them alone. Meryl Streep or whatever. But Gabrielle Hamilton, that owns Prune, had a great line. She said, "You know, if they changed your life, tell them." So I did that, and we ended up chatting and finding that we got on well, and shared a sense of humor.Ned Baldwin: He came back a few more times, and I guess wasn't disappointed with the food. And then on December 17th of 2015, called the restaurant, and he said, "Do you want to do a book?" And I said, "No." Which was insane, but... You know. I had just opened a restaurant. And he said, "You know, Ned, it takes a long time to write a book." He was quite right. It took us a year and a half to kind of carve out what the concept of the book was, and then a couple more years to get it fully written. I took cookbook writing 101, 202, 303, 404 with Peter, who has written 17 cookbooks.Suzy Chase: Now for my segment called My Favorite Cookbook. What is your all time favorite cookbook, and why?Ned Baldwin: I... And I bet you do, too... I love Bonnie Slotnick. I love her bookstore. I love going in there and spending half the time talking to her, and half the time looking at books, and I have done for many, many years.Ned Baldwin: I can pull out some silly ones. I love Rex Stout, the author. He wrote the Nero Wolfe books that take place in New York City in the '30s and '40s and '50s, and he was a gastronome who lived in the West '30s in his townhouse, and he had a chef in his house? This is all fictional. He had a chef in his house. His name is Fritz. And one of the great joys of the books is him describing the meals that Fritz, who's a German cook, but was making what I think is really traditional high American food from that era. There are probably, gosh, I don't know, 20 or 30 Nero Wolfe books, and someone pulled all of the recipes out of them and made a cookbook out of them. I really, really love that one a lot.Ned Baldwin: I was just reading It's Not a Cookbook. But, we have a group out here on Sunday evenings. Somebody picks a text, and we Zoom together and take turns reading the text. So, I had remembered a Jim Harrison essay. I think he was in Michigan, and got caught in just the storm of all storms, and kind of dug a hole with his hands and got in the hole. It's a really beautiful piece, and sort of makes me feel a little bit about some version of how our psyche's feeling at the moment. For those who don't know, Jim Harrison's an outdoorsman and a food writer, and he wrote some movies. He died a couple years ago. And he just writes amazingly about food.Ned Baldwin: You know, I couldn't remember where the heck that passage was about him getting caught in the storm, so I ended up reading two of his books over the last couple of days. And just, I mean wonderful food story after wonderful food story, and half of them are him at home, making pozole... He's like a super rustic cook... and half of them are him at some three Michelin star restaurant, eating woodcock and drinking magnums of Petrus. So I like him a lot, too.Suzy Chase: Where can we find you on the web and social media?Ned Baldwin: My website is housemanrestaurant.com, and I have Facebook, but I don't really use it, and I have Twitter, and I don't really use that, either. But I do use Instagram quite a bit, and my Instagram is also just Housemanrestaurant.Suzy Chase: Judith Jones wrote in Eater, "To me, cooking is an art form, and like any art form, you have to learn the fundamentals. Well, this cookbook is a good place to start." Thanks so much, Ned, for coming on Cookery by the Book Podcast.Ned Baldwin: Thank you for having me. It's a lot of fun.Outro: Subscribe over on CookerybytheBook.com, and thanks for listening to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book.

Dynamic Learning with Google (Part 3) In part two, we are moving on to our next characteristic in the Dynamic Learning Framework, Beyond the Grade Level and Subject Area. Dynamic Learning is at the heart of my book, Shake Up Learning: Practical Ideas to Move Learning from Static to Dynamic. We are going to talk about three classroom strategies to help you go Beyond the Tool, student choice, choice boards, and Project Based Learning. Then we will look at which Google tools can help support these strategies in the classroom. Get the FREE Dynamic Learning with Google Toolkit Fill out the form here. to get access to the toolkit designed to go with this podcast series. In this Google Sheet, you will see how the Dynamic Learning characteristics align with classroom strategies and a list of recommended Google tools to help you do it! Beyond the Grade Level and Subject Area Let's take kids off the conveyor belt of education and give them opportunities to learn about the things that interest them beyond the subject areas we teach and even beyond what it says they should learn in each grade level. Learning doesn't have to fit inside a box. I know this can sound impossible but stay with me here. Students need opportunities to explore their own passions and interests that go beyond what exists inside a prescribed curriculum. This doesn’t mean you have to teach more concepts; this means that we find ways to give students opportunities to make decisions and choose topics and projects that interest them. Beyond the Grade Level and Subject Area with Student Choice Student choice is the number one way we can help students find and explore their own interests. Whether that means giving them a choice of reading, choice of project or research topic, or a choice in how they demonstrate their learning--all paths will help build decision-makers and problem solvers! To be clear, this doesn’t mean free reign. Most students cannot handle a fully open choice, but if we begin by giving them two or three options, we can baby step it to bigger decisions and choices. It truly saddens me to see students who graduate high school without one clue about their own genuine interests. And I see this happen year after year. Ways to Give Student’s Choice Choice of reading Choice of project topic Choice of research topic Choice of device Choice of tool(s) If you are not already giving students choice in your classroom, begin to look for those opportunities in your lessons. Beyond the Grade Level and Subject Area with Choice Boards Choice boards have been a long-time favorite of mine. They completely transformed my classroom and helped me to stop being such a control freak. You can call these learning menus or choice boards, these words are interchangeable, offer a simple set of activities from which students can choose. These can be a simple list, or they can take more creative forms like a tic-tac-toe or the style of a restaurant menu. One of the most popular posts on this blog is all about using G Suite to create interactive choice boards. In this post, you will find free templates and ideas for your classroom. I have also created a special choice board for integrating the 4 C's. Grab a copy here. For a more in-depth look at choice boards, check out The Teacher’s Guide to Choice Boards. Beyond the Grade Level and Subject Area with PBL Project Based Learning, PBL, opens up a world of possibilities for our students. Whether you are doing authentic PBL or jumping into something like Genius Hour, Google tools can help your students reach their goals. What exactly is PBL? “Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.” - PBL Works PBL is all about moving beyond the inauthentic, one-and-done daily lessons and activities that never connect. Google tools can help support PBL throughout the entire process: Planning and research with Google Search Recording information and writing with Google Docs Collecting data with Google Forms Analyzing data with Google Sheets Managing time with Google Keep and Google Calendar Documenting experiments and processes with Google Photos and Video Presenting final projects with Google Slides or Google Sites Podcast Question of the Week How do you give students opportunities to explore their own interests in your classroom? It doesn't seem reasonable that we'd have a conversation with a top sports psychologist and peak performance coach when our topic this week is MIRACLES and the power of LOVE. It's NOT reasonable. It's a miracle! David Cook is a speaker, consultant, coach, author, and film-maker in the field of Sport and Performance Psychology. He served as "Mental Training Coach" for the San Antonio Spurs from 1996 – 2004 that included two World Championships. Golf Digest (2013) named him one of the “Top 10 Mental Game Experts” in the world of golf. He has coached several of the Tour’s top players. His message for our LOVE IS FEARLESS community is FREEDOM from fear. It's the same message he shares with his clients--who win! David is a great storyteller. He is generous with us in this episode and we are honored. Join us now to connect the dots between LOVE and fearless FREEDOM and find real strength in these TAKEAWAYS: Building a culture of love requires us to make room for miracles. Miracles are those supernatural things that change us from what we were--weak and wounded, to what we can be--strong and healthy. LOVE always makes us strong. "The battle has begun, but remember, it is not your battle. See His Face, Feel His Presence, Trust His Love." (A quote from Golf's Sacred Journey--The Sequel to Seven Days in Utopia by David Cook.) Building a culture of love invites us to be on the lookout for miracles--and call them what they are. Miracles are unreasonable. They are real experiences that we can't manufacture on our own. Miracles are the byproduct of trust and love--and they remind us we're not the only player in the arena. LOVE is here! Ready to move the learning in your classroom from static, one-and-done activities, to more dynamic learning—Dynamic Learning with G Suite? This 4-part podcast series will show you how you can use G Suite tools to support dynamic learning experiences for your students! Technology presents us with a unique opportunity in education, an opportunity to create more dynamic learning experiences for our students. We have to start thinking differently about our assignments. One-and-done doesn’t cut it anymore. The learning needs to live, grow, connect, and go beyond traditional ideas. We need Dynamic Learning! This episode is NOT about Google or G Suite, but how to use these tools to support dynamic LEARNING in the classroom. Dynamic Learning is at the heart of my book, Shake Up Learning: Practical Ideas to Move Learning From Static to Dynamic. It’s my passion. It’s my blood, my sweat, and frankly, a lot of tears! I want to help teachers like you to Shake Up Learning. Shoutout Thank you to Ashley Brown for leaving us a question about badges. Do you have a question or idea to share on the podcast? Leave me a message here. Dynamic Learning with Google You can dive deeper into Dynamic Learning by listening to the first five episodes of the Shake Up Learning Show. This binge-worthy series on meaningful technology integration was the kick-off to my podcast and will give you a detailed look at the Dynamic Learning Model and Framework. Top 20 Tech Tips for Teachers The 4 C’s: The Superfoods of Learning A Framework for Meaningful Technology Integration Easy Lesson Plan Makeovers for Your Classroom How to Plan for Technology Integration I would also like to personally invite you to join one of the Shake Up Learning book studies that we conduct throughout the year. You can find the latest information and schedule on this page: shakeuplearning.com/bookstudy. What is Dynamic Learning? Dynamic Learning is characterized by constant change and activity. This learning takes place organically, growing and evolving through more unconventional means, with the learner collaborating, creating, and communicating to demonstrate progress and mastery. Dynamic Learning also extends beyond the boundaries of a traditional school day, beyond the physical location of the classroom, beyond using tools as digital substitutes, or even the traditional notion of hard-and-fast due dates. The Dynamic Learning Characteristics When you think DYNAMIC, I want you to think BEYOND! (Read full definitions here.) BEYOND the Bell: a lifelong learning mindset for students. BEYOND the Grade Level and Subject Area: helping students tap into passions and interests that are outside the given curriculum. BEYOND the Walls: publishing student work for a global audience, and bringing in global connections and collaborations. BEYOND the Tools: using digital tools to do new things. BEYOND the Due Date: mentoring and coaching students to continue learning even after the project has been assessed. If the Internet is down, and you have to change your digital lesson to pencil and paper, the lesson should invariably lose something. Meaning, if your lesson is using technology in a dynamic way, it just can’t be replicated on paper. The Dynamic Learning Framework You can download a printable PDF version of the graphic here. Using Google Tools to Support Dynamic Learning So how does Google come into play? Well, Google and G Suite for Education offers educators and students many tools that will support the Dynamic Learning Framework. Remember, this is not about Google--not about getting carried away by shiny tools, but about how we can use these tools to support learning. There are many lesson plans available in the Shake Up Learning book, as well as my online database of shared lesson plans, and most involve some sort of Google tool. But today, I want to share with you some quick wins, easy tips to help you see the reality of Dynamic Learning in your classroom. Get the FREE Dynamic Learning with Google Toolkit Fill out the form below to get access to the toolkit designed to go with this podcast series. Beyond the Bell Learning doesn't have to end when the bell rings. With digital tools and devices that are available 24/7, students can continue to learn, collaborate, grow, and dig deeper into their learning on their own terms. This doesn't mean homework. This is a mindset for students that means learning can take place anytime, anywhere, and students can own it. Beyond the bell is a lifelong learning mindset for students. Please don’t assume this one simply means doing things after the bell rings! It’s much more than that. We want students to recognize learning, know how to seek out their own learning, and have a growth mindset. Google tools can help support this mindset in many ways. Beyond the Bell with Goal Setting Goal setting is a research-based strategy that is common among adults, but it’s something we should instill in our students at an early age. We want students not only to understand and reach the learning goals we set in the classroom but also set their own goals. This is where it gets personal. Goals setting with students will allow you to get to know them and cultivate relationships. But this doesn’t have to be complicated. Even the little ones can set mini-goals. For instance, ask them, “What’s one thing that would make today great?” Or “What will make you smile today?” With the older students, it is important that we don’t tie grades to a goal. What I mean by that is that grades are often reflective of many other things like turning in late work, etc. Associate the goal with the learning! What is it they will know or be able to do when they reach this goal? We can use many different Google tools for goal setting. Google Keep is a favorite of mine. It’s an easy way to document goals and revisit them on a regular basis. You could also track goals in Docs or a fancy Google Sheet. The point is to articulate goals on a regular timeline and to revisit every one to three weeks, so you don’t lose sight. Vision boards are a visual way to imagine reaching your goals. Traditional vision boards have images and words that help you stay focused on what it will look like when you reach your goals. Google Slides and Google Drawings are perfect partners for this image-driven creation! Beyond the Bell with Trackers As an adult, I often track my steps and progress over time. In the classroom, my students tracked their reading--pages read, books completed. But the power of tracking can help our students not only reach their goals but establish good habits and emotional control. Social and Emotional Learning, or SEL, is an essential component of success for students. Trackers offer students a way to recognize emotions and social queues, as well as show growth over time. Google Sheets is a great application for tracking habits, emotions, reading, health, and even moods. My friend and colleague, Lisa Johnson, has included many trackers in her book, Creatively Productive. Most of her templates are available in Google Sheets and Numbers. By using a spreadsheet template, we can create a quick and easy way to track. (Check out her guest post and access her free templates here: 6 FREE Google Templates for Creative Productivity.) A victim would never say "I'm being a victim right now." Simply put a woman in a low frequency believes her reality is happening to her, the dog shit in her life is happening to her, and she has no control over any of it. A woman in a high frequency takes 100% responsibility for her energy and her frequency. The most common ego thought is... "It's easier for her to have it all because my problems are worse." I'm calling BS on that right now. We all have big ass problems. We all have that dark voice that says "How dare you do this to me." It's NOT harder for you, it's NOT easier for me. I take full responsibility for my choices and my energy because I am a leader... and losing is blaming external forces for YOUR feelings. WTF how is that even a thing. Arguing that your problems are not your problems? It makes no sense. It's exhausting to fight and blame and believe you have no power over your life. It's actually miserable and I was tormented when I blamed my family and ex for ruining my life. I was miserable. So if the goal is for you to feel peace and love, then it's time to change your habits from "poor me" to "YOU BET YOUR ASS I CAN." You are the only one who can decide to take your power back. Do not feel sorry for yourself honey, you are not a victim.

Brian Frank is the singer of the band 'Killer Bee', and started his career in Toronto Ontario Canada, back in 1985 and by 1990, had fallen in love with life in Sweden and moved there permanently. In 1992 Brian formed the band Killer Bee and has released 7 studio albums since then - but now it's time for him to shine on his own! Brian is releasing his first solo album project called "Celebrate Life" and with it comes a brand new single and video "It's Not the End" which deals with issues plaguing our society. Human Rights and the violations that occur within it, for example: genocide, human trafficking and others. Brian feels very strongly about the Witness program, co-founded by Peter Gabriel in 1992 that supports preserving video evidence of history's atrocities. Hear about Brian's music and his career, now in his own words here on this week's episode! Show #644 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 17th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 12 REASONS THE MUSTANG WILL BE SUCCESSFUL The Name Advertised by Ford Dealers Sold by dealers close to you The car isn't ugly It's not slow Models with 300 miles Fast charging on a 150kW charger FordPass Charging Network The car is affordable Interior is modern It's NOT a Tesla Ford will make a lot of them https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/16/12-reasons-why-the-ford-mustang-mach-e-will-be-a-huge-hit/ UK RESERVATIONS OPEN FOR ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-2008 SUV Buyers will be able to reserve the all-new e-2008 SUV in GT Line trim, costing from £32,000 including Government’s £3,500 Plug-in Car Grant. The e-2008 SUV will also be available later in Active, Allure and GT trim levels. GT Line and GT trims feature full LED headlights with smartbeam assist, LED rear lights with PEUGEOT’s ‘three-claw’ signature graphic, as well as an interior with Adamite green colour stitching, mood lighting, dynamic seats and aluminum pedals. Fleet and company car drivers benefit from low company car tax rates. The zero-emission, all-new e-2008 SUV will be exempt from paying Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax from April 2020 onwards. The PEUGEOT e-2008 SUV is powered by a 100kW (136bhp) electric motor with a 50kWh battery. Under WLTP testing, the 100% electric, zero exhaust emissions, SUV provides 193 miles of range. DRIIVZ AND ENNET TO BRING SMART EV CHARGING SERVICES TO JAPAN Currently, EVs only account for 0.5% of all new cars sold in Japan. However, several Japanese automakers are preparing to launch electric models in the next couple of years which is expected to increase the adoption of EVs in the country. By integrating elements of Driivz’s EV charging management platform into its smart charging service, Ennet will be able to analyse the power usage patterns of its customers, identify when energy grids receive the least demand for charging and make sure fleets are sufficiently charged for use the following day. Functionality to remotely start and stop charging will also be enabled. LYFT IS INTRODUCING A FLEET OF 200 ELECTRIC KIAS IN COLORADO "Coloradans will be able to catch a ride in a sleek, new $40,000 electric Kia Niro as soon as December even though the vehicles aren’t available for sale in the state." says Colorado Sun: "That’s because Lyft is making a fleet of 200 of the long-range electric crossovers available for lease to its Colorado drivers. The ride-sharing company on Thursday rolled out the plan — its first attempt in the U.S. to make an electric-vehicle fleet available to its drivers — thanks to a law change earlier this year.Legislators opened up Colorado’s electric-vehicle tax credit program to rental companies and businesses with fleets in an attempt to attract a company like Lyft to put a mass of EVs on the roads. Lyft, which lobbied for the change, hopes laws will change in other states, too. " https://coloradosun.com/2019/11/14/kia-niro-lyft-colorado-fleet/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Damon Ireland Our key reason for owning an EV is not being beholden to the fuel companies to run our car. Here in New Zealand we are paying $2.20 for a litre of 91 octane petrol which which tends to jump up quickly whenever any overseas events affects the value of crude oil or our dollar. In contrast our electricity price has not changed in over 3 years Doug Vowles, Canada Hey Martyn – First off – last week my wife and I ordered our first electric car, the Tesla Model 3 SR+. Hoping to get it before the end of the year. Thank you for being part of the process in getting to that decision! QOW answer: ZERO EMISSIONS. I currently would not look at any car that wasn’t zero emissions. There are other requirements beyond that (like range) but much of it (0 – 60…) is just gravy. Don Miller I never run late for an appointment because I had to stop and get gas. (We charge each night so we leave home with 200 miles of range) Phil Kemp I'd vote instant torque as the biggest advantage. It's not only convenient but can be a life saver in a tight situation. James Penfold from EV Launchpad Martin, answer to question of the week: stomping on the “gas” pedal never gets old when you are running on guilt free, inexpensive renewable energy! Thanks for the awesome podcast. James Penfold Boston USA. Dafydd Cheung Genuinely, I’m more interested in EVs, because on the whole, they are less destructive to the only planet we have. May the sun shine on your panels. Adam DeVries I bought my car because it was electric. I hated going to gas stations. someone just asked me if I liked my car because it was electric or because it had autopilot. I can't decide if I would rather drive a car that was electric or one that had autopilot. I think I prefer the convenience of the electric vehicle getting to charge at home and work always having a full tank but it is a hard decision. ARON MCINNES Being able to plug in my garage and go every morning without worrying about filling up. I drive an average of 4500km a month, I fuel up a lot and the savings would be nice too. DAVE DEWSON from EVSMILES Number one thing with an EV.... way more smiles per mile! CORTEEN QOTW, my favourite feature is getting into a de-iced and pre warmed car in the winter, can’t beat driving past all your neighbours who are outside in the cold scraping their cars! MARTY YOUNG My "one thing" would be the acceleration. I'm a pilot, and I love when I push the throttle forward and feel the acceleration press me back into my seat and the speed increases until the wheels leave the ground! I get a similar feeling (minus the wheels leaving the ground!) in my 2016 Volt. SERVULUS BILLY You ask what's the one upside to driving an EV.... I give you the experience itself. ..... the stares on admiration, the thumbs up of approvals, the many questions of FUD I was able to defunct, the minds and thought processes I was able to change or at least open their eye and minds to something new, the comradery of the brand and last but not least the driving experience itself for which there was no comparison Øyvind Bjørkelund Best thing with my EV must be better fuel economy! TOM RAFTERY The one thing I love about driving my EV is that I am living in the future! I have a 5kW solar array on my roof which I use to charge the car – the lack of emissions, the zippiness of the car, the quiet ride all contribute to my awesome feeling of future living QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Today I want to address a VERY big question that people ask me… "Is MLM saturated?" There’s something I've started doing a lot in the evenings… I just go for a 10 - 20-mile bike ride. I also like to walk quite a bit so I can just listen to podcasts. I'm studying I'm thinking Sometimes I'm just jamming out to music … It's become my ME time. I'm sure it won't always be in the evenings, but it has been for the past little bit… Especially while I've just done my big OfferMind. So many of you guys came and it was AWESOME! About 650 people had a ticket and about 600 showed up (which is a pretty standard show-up rate for an event). We did a good chunk in sales, and it's just been so much fun to work with all those new people. I've really, really enjoyed it. What's interesting is... Since then, I've needed some DECOMPRESS time. At the time of recording this episode, I'm speaking at Carnegie Hall. Martha Stewart is speaking Michael Gerber is gonna be there Dan Kennedy is gonna be there so long as his health is okay ... This is nuts! ANYWAYS: If you guys wanna change your life, listen to what I'm doing on this show. Go publish for ONE YEAR… Come back to me in one year and you tell me if your financial life is not drastically different. There is something magical about publishing. **That's not the purpose of today's episode.** THE GIFT OF MLM MARKET SATURATION I wanna address a question that comes up frequently and you have likely have heard it if you've been in this space for more than six months. I LOVE MLM. I love it. It's so, so, so fun. One of my favorite things to do in MLM is to look at articles that other people have posted about why they think MLM is NOT okay. And what you’ll find is... Most people who publish these articles are usually those who've been in it but DID NOT figure out how to have success and they feel jaded. They feel, "Oh, everything's bad. For shame. For shame." And they go write these terrible reviews… That makes some people think, "Well, that just means MLM is bad." No, no, no! I've had NEGATIVE reviews. I've had TERRIBLE reviews. There are always naysayers and it doesn't change just because it IS or IS NOT MLM, network marketing, direct sales, whatever you choose to call it. There will always be Negative Nancies with Poopy Pants syndrome… That’s just how it is. I believe it's a GIFT that people think MLM is saturated… And I’m gonna tell you WHY. It's NOT because it lowers competition… THE TYPE OF MARKET I DON’T WANT A little while ago, I had somebody reach out to me and say, "Steven, I would love to buy Secret MLM Hacks. How much money will you guarantee that I will make?" And I was like, "What are you talking about?" I don't know if I've told you this in the past but just stick with me for a moment here… They said, "How much money do you guarantee I will make with your course?" And I said, "I don't even know who you are. I'm not gonna guarantee a number. This may not be for you." She said, "Are you telling me that you don't wanna sell it to me?" And I was like, "Yeah, I don't think you're a good fit for it." She's was like, "Are you serious?" So I said, "Yeah." I don't care if you have the money. The way I bring somebody into my product is usually what determines what they do after they've bought the product. MEANING: If I have to beg somebody into my downline, I usually have to beg them to do something while they're in my downline. I DON’T want that kind of individual (and I'm not judging someone's self-worth). I want somebody who is going to be a runner, a builder… Someone who's gonna run around and go far with this thing. I am not trying to convince anybody to get in my downline. I do stuff like what I'm doing right now. People who hear my voice and see what I'm doing… They catch the vision and they find a way into my downline. I'm NOT trying to pitch you, but you need to understand why this is such a powerful principle. THE SATURATED MLM MARKET GIFT I don't BEG or ASK anybody to join my downline. You know that nasty convincing feeling that you get sometimes? We've all been there, it's okay. You're like, "Man, I feel like I've kinda pushed them in there." … And then they don't do ANYTHING. That’s exactly what I'm talking about. When people say, "The market is saturated. The market is so saturated." THAT’S A GIFT! That’s why I went into MLM. The fact that I can say, "MLM," and 90% of any room already has an opinion… Oh my gosh! That's huge. I love the show Shark Tank. In one of the episodes of Shark Tank, there is an episode where they loved this guy… They loved his product They loved what he was doing They loved everything about this guy … But they didn't fund him. The reason they didn't fund him was one of the most powerful lessons I've ever learned in my life. They said, "We want your product, BUT it would take us millions of dollars to educate the market enough to want to buy that product." "We want your product, BUT it would take millions of dollars to EDUCATE the market enough to want to buy that." That's the ONLY reason they didn't fund him. I DON’T WANT TO EDUCATE THE MARKET Education takes time and money. The fact that I can walk into a room and say, "MLM," and 90% of everyone already knows what the heck I'm talking about is a GIFT. It is a gift. When someone says, "Oh, well, the market's really saturated." That just means the market's been validated. That DOESN’T mean that you shouldn't go into it. When I'm looking to see what to sell, I look for the MOST: Competitive Cutthroat Bloody red market … That I can. I want that. This is literally one of my strategies. I know it is one of the reasons I’ve done so well. In the last year and a half leaving my job, we're about to cross $4 Million. The strategy I'm teaching you right here right now is one of the MAJOR reasons why stuff has blown up so much. It's blown up so much because I have actively pursued bloody red, highly competitive markets. YOU DON’T NEED TO EDUCATE THE MLM SPACE This is a deep concept but if you came to OfferMind, you know what I'm talking about. The reason I want saturated markets is that the customer has ALREADY been educated. I don't need to be the one educating them. There's a HUGE market out there. So much money is running around the MLM space and that market is constantly finding new customers. People who were NEVER planning on being a customer. The MLM market as a whole are educating my dream customer for me. All I do is wait patiently for that person to get frustrated with what they've been taught. "Hey, you want to have success in MLM? Go talk to all your friends and family." I just wait. I wait for that person to get frustrated enough that when they finally see my message, my Facebook ads, my YouTube videos, the podcast or whatever it might be, they look at it and they go, "You know what? I'm kind of tired. I didn't realize that there's another way to do this." BOOM! MLM MARKET POSITIONING I don't need to tell them that the other way is painful because they're experiencing pain. It's one of the greatest hacks to the game EVER. This is one of the FIRST things I do with any corporate clients. I don't just serve the MLM space. I've done a lot of stuff with lots of big people and that's one of the first things I help them figure out. That's called MARKET POSITIONING. You need to figure out how you’re gonna position yourself in relation to the market. All I do is wait for people to get frustrated in the MLM space and I'm ready and waitin over here on this side, just speaking as loud as I can. I'm just shouting my message into that space. I'm not convincing I'm not pushing This is one of the FASTEST ways to grow 'cause I'm NOT the one educating them. An entire market is saying the exact same thing. There are billions, probably trillions of dollars inside MLM. And they're the ones who are educating my future dream customer. When somebody says, "Oh, the MLM space is really, really saturated." GOOD! WHY I LOVE SATURATED MARKETS Do you know why I sell in the ClickFunnels space also? QUESTION: How much money and manpower is being spent on educating funnel builders inside of ClickFunnels? ANSWER: They have over 400 employees. They spend millions of dollars in overhead every month. When someone comes in and says, "I'm gonna compete with that." It's like, "Good luck, Chuck." You gotta look at the firepower you're dealing with. All I do with the ClickFunnel space is complement it. When somebody comes into ClickFunnels, I'm like, "Hey, use ClickFunnels 'cause you should use ClickFunnels and it's dumb not to. By the way, if you want a free trial go to freecftrial.com and it'll give you a free trial of ClickFunnels, freecftrial.com.” But what I do with ClickFunnels is wait patiently for the person to just say, "You know what, I wish somebody would just build it for me." With ClickFunnels, I compliment that market. But in MLM, I compete with that market. I'm throwing rocks into the market. I DON’T do that with ClickFunnels. I'm NOT throwing rocks at ClickFunnels. That's dumb. I love ClickFunnels. My market positioning matters. So when I hear somebody say something like, "Hey, but the MLM space is supersaturated." That is market validation! That actually represents security. But you're not taught that in school. I was taught that it’s bad! I was taught that when there’s competition, I should run the other way. WRONG! It takes a lifetime of dedication to build the momentum that's required to build a market. I can either spend my entire lifetime going and developing a new market OR go see where the noise already is. What you have to understand is that a marketer DOES NOT create attention. They just align with where attention already is. THE BENEFIT OF A SATURATED MLM MARKET Realize the benefit to having such massive saturation. It is a benefit. Then all I gotta do is figure out, "How am I gonna position myself in relation to that market?" THIS is one of the reasons why my stuff is blowing up so much. I look for places where there's a lot of noise and lots of pressure. I don't need to create that because it's already there! One of the reasons MLM works so well is because I have purposefully targeted the MLM space, knowing that it's saturated. One of the biggest fears I had was that I couldn’t go talk to someone because they'd already been pitched… Q: How many books have you ever bought on one topic? My guess is that it's more than one. It's a false belief to sit back and say, "I can't because they have already purchased." GOOD! I should not be the first person that my customer ever buys from. I want to help you realize there are literally decades of previous people who've built ALL this: Pressure Noise Education … For us! I don't have to educate people on what MLM is. All I have to do is educate them on why my stuff is cool and why they should buy it. It's a gift. I don't care what MLM you're in, I just want to go change the industry. EDUCATE THE SECRET MLM HACKS MARKET I know it's tough to find people to pitch after your warm market dries up, right? That moment when you finally run out of family and friends to pitch. I don't see many up lines teaching legitimate lead strategies today. After years of being a lead funnel builder online I got sick of the garbage strategies most MLMs have been teaching their recruits for decades. Whether you simply want more leads to pitch or an automated MLM funnel, head over to secretmlmhacks.com and join the next FREE training. There you're gonna learn the hidden revenue model that only the top MLMers have been using to get paid regardless if you join them. Learn the 3-step system I use to auto recruit my downline of big producers WITHOUT friends or family even knowing that I'm in MLM. If you want to do the same for yourself, head over to secretmlmhacks.com. Again that’s secretmlmhacks.com.
Let's TALK! Schedule a free call Email: kristen@kristenfinch.com ----------------------------------------------------- How many times a day do you get triggered? Your heart starts racing, your breathing gets irregular, you feel like you want to fight or run or disappear. That, my friend, is your fight/flight response and it's SUPER handy when you're being threatened by a gorilla enemy (you have to listen to understand this reference hahahaha!). It's NOT super handy when you're just trying to feel better in your life, change some things for the better. It is not good for your health or your life to be spending so much time feeling triggered...especially when the threat isn't even real. In today's episode I'm talking to you about what actually happens in the body when you're triggered... How to recognize YOUR specific response (are you a fighter or a runner?) And what to do to get yourself OUT of that panicky place. Enjoy this episode!
