Chris Bridges has worked as an NHS Nurse, a theatre reviewer, a columnist and now is a published author. It was his work as a nurse, coupled with his Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis, that gave him the inspiration and experience to get the novel done. The novel is 'Sick to Death', it tells the story of Emma who can't go to work because of a neurological condition. When her boyfriend won't finally leave his wife, she takes matters into her own hands. Emma is sick, but not in the way you think. WHAT A LINE!Chris talks about why he wanted to write a character with disability, where the disability wasn't simply a trope that allows other characters to get on with the plot. Yet also, how that influenced the character arc he could write. You can hear how he got into Emma's head, and told her side of a story dealing with disability. We discuss how much he thought about the genre he was writing in, how he found the crucial mid-point, and how living with M.S. affects his daily writing in ways we don't consider. You can get a copy of the book at uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the show at - patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutineSubscribe to the newsletter - writersroutine.substack.com@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. In this week's episode of Leadership is Feminine, Kris Plachy unpacks the powerful connection between personal agency and what it truly means to be a well-resourced woman. She invites listeners to consider how much of their lives they're actually claiming—and how much they've unintentionally handed over. Kris speaks directly to the millions of women who, despite having the means to choose freely, still find themselves living by someone else's rules. Whether it's from fear, conditioning, or cultural expectations, too many women wait for permission to live fully. Kris challenges listeners to stop giving their energy to toxic relationships or unworthy environments. Your attention is gold—and it's time to treat it that way. At its core, this conversation is about collective empowerment. When more women claim their voice and their power, the ripple effect can't be denied. As Kris puts it, “We change the world. And I want to change it for her over there, who can't do it by herself. She can't. But we can.” If you're ready to step into full ownership of your life, this conversation will meet you where you are and nudge you forward. Tune in and start reclaiming your power—one intentional choice at a time. Key Takeaways From This Episode Lack of Worthiness: Exploring why women allow others to make decisions for them. Role of Well-Resourced Women: Encouragement to embrace responsibility and accountability in life. Impact of Personal Choice: Decisions should be made from a place of desire, not obligation. Drawing Boundaries: Encouragement to prioritize self-attention and set boundaries. Power in Numbers: Emphasizing the collective power when women claim their personal agency. Ever wondered how data powers the magic behind your favorite theme park experiences? Join Cindi Howson and Gavin Hupp, VP of Technology, Enterprise Architecture, Data and Martech, E-commerce and Analytics at United Parks and Resorts, as they explore the complex data ecosystem of a theme park, from e-commerce and guest experience to AI's role in shaping the future of entertainment.Key Moments: Theme Park Business Model (03:12): Theme parks are described as a mix of multiple businesses, including e-commerce for ticket sales, animal experiences, entertainment venues, culinary and restaurant services, and retail operations. This combination creates a complex ecosystem, similar to city planning, within a single physical location.  Data Ecosystem Challenges (03:37): Gavin highlights the challenge of managing data within theme parks due to the variety of business areas. Each area generates unique data, leading to disparate and sometimes siloed data sets across different business applications.  AI as an Innovation Driver (11:24): AI is viewed as a key driver of innovation within the theme park industry, capable of creating new products and services, such as augmented reality experiences, and enhancing personalization at scale.  AI for Process Optimization (11:24): Beyond guest-facing innovation, AI is also seen as a tool to optimize business processes, streamline operations, reduce costs, and identify opportunities for revenue growth through personalization and increased efficiency.  Data-Driven Decision-Making (17:30): United Parks and Resorts emphasizes the importance of guest feedback, collected through surveys and other means, and uses it to inform decision-making and guide the company's overall strategy.  Agile Development Approach (28:50): Gavin explains how the company employs agile development principles, using "skateboards" as a metaphor for quickly delivering initial solutions and value while simultaneously iterating and building more comprehensive and scalable solutions ("scooters" and "factories").Key Quotes:"To become more data-driven, you have to break down silos. This requires making people aware of the silos, the challenges they create, and framing it as a data quality discussion. Getting business leaders to care about data quality isn't easy; they want end results and impact." - Gavin Hupp"There's product and service innovation, and business process innovation, where AI optimizes and streamlines operations, decreasing costs and increasing revenue through personalization." - Gavin Hupp“There's an agile concept, a principle where, at the end of the day, you need to get movement, you need to get going. And so you can use a skateboard to go from point A to point B.” - Gavin HuppMentionsGavin Hupp, Forbes ArticlePenguin Trek: Seaworld Roller CoasterConway's Law4 Values of Agile DevelopmentScrumDiet & Eating Habits of Killer WhalesGuest Bio Gavin Hupp is currently the VP of Technology: Enterprise Architecture & Data, Martech, e-Commerce & Analytics at SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment (United Parks & Resorts). Episode Summary In this episode, we dive into a client-centered approach to nutrition and behavior change. Our guest, Ian, shares his insights on how practitioners can create sustainable change by focusing on empowerment first, education second. The conversation highlights the importance of small, realistic goal setting and understanding the emotional challenges clients face when trying to make lasting health changes. Rather than pushing for perfection or drastic overnight transformations, Ian advocates for collaborative planning and supportive coaching to help clients achieve their goals and rebuild their confidence. Episode Highlights Empowerment First, Education Second: Ian emphasizes that practitioners should prioritize empowering their clients rather than bombarding them with education at the outset. Empowering clients helps them feel more capable and motivated to make changes. The Power of Small, Achievable Goals: We discuss the importance of setting small, realistic goals that help build momentum and confidence. Rather than striving for perfection, small successes lead to long-term change and prevent discouragement. Breaking the All-or-Nothing Mindset: Ian addresses the common "all or nothing" thinking that many clients fall into, which often leads to feelings of failure. He highlights how to move away from this mindset and set expectations that are more forgiving and flexible. Collaborative Coaching Approach: Instead of dictating what clients "should" do, Ian stresses the importance of negotiation and working together to set a plan that meets clients where they are. This collaborative approach fosters trust and ensures that clients are truly committed to their goals. Sustainable Change Through Layered Goals: The conversation also covers how practitioners can layer small goals over time to create lasting behavioral change, as opposed to overwhelming clients with large, difficult plans. The Role of the Practitioner: Practitioners should view themselves as collaborators, guiding clients through manageable steps and providing support when setbacks occur. Send us a textBirthday reflections hit differently when you're staring down 36 years of life experiences, complete with all the messy, beautiful, and sometimes downright painful moments that shape who we become. My journey has been anything but straightforward. I've navigated divorce, blended family dynamics, pregnancy loss, and the death of my daughter's father—all while battling anxiety, CPTSD, and coming to terms with being neurodivergent. The constant struggle between wanting acceptance and needing to be authentically myself has finally reached a tipping point where I'm choosing the latter, even when it's uncomfortable.Through the chaos, I've somehow managed to create a podcast, meet fascinating people from Olympians to professional fighters, write a book, buy a camper, and raise amazing children. These achievements didn't happen because life was perfect—they happened despite life being imperfect. That's what I want you to take away from this episode: you're still here, still fighting, still creating, and that alone makes you a warrior. As I enter this new year of life, I'm setting my sights on performing stand-up comedy, finishing my memoir, recording music, and traveling in our camper while homeschooling the kids. It's a tall order, but if there's anything these 36 years have taught me, it's that life is just a set of experiences—and I'm determined to make each one count.Join me in this raw, unfiltered birthday reflection where I peel back the layers of social media perfection to show you the real, sometimes struggling, but always determined person behind the microphone. Because in a world full of fake shit, couldn't we all use a little more authenticity?Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREEDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. What does it take to ensure a "good death"? Join us as we explore this profound question with our esteemed guest, Susanna Bryan, a transformative figure in end-of-life care. Drawing from her rich experiences as a former hospice and oncology nurse, and founder of the Doula Givers Institute, Susanna offers enlightening insights into making the end-of-life experience more human-centered. Inspired by her volunteer work in Zimbabwe, she advocates for changes in the American system to focus on clarity, comfort, and dignity, and shares the nine essential questions that guide this process. Her journey underscores the importance of presence and a supportive community for those nearing life's end and provides a roadmap to align end-of-life experiences with personal values. This episode delves into the delicate task of discussing end-of-life wishes with loved ones, focusing on maintaining quality of life and ensuring wishes are respected. We recount the heartfelt story of Mary, who faced terminal cancer with grace and celebrated her life through a living funeral. Mary's journey is a testament to the power of prioritizing personal comfort and symptom management over medical interventions. We also explore the role of palliative care in enhancing quality of life, encouraging listeners to consider practical, physical, and emotional preparations for future decisions. Listeners are invited to consider their own end-of-life care preferences, from choosing a healthcare proxy to exploring environmentally friendly body disposition options. We highlight the significance of legal documents like the POLST form in ensuring wishes are followed and emphasize the value of clear communication with family. As we explore alternative end-of-life celebrations, such as body donation and living funerals, we encourage embracing personal choice to honor life and death. “When I saw that [Kendrick] line, I go, ‘well, that makes me a criminal then.' Shoot, I've been talking about black women most of my career!” Gary Owen A Pivot treat for you as we have an open discussion with Stand up comedian and actor Gary Owen, who brings his unfiltered humor and raw storytelling to the conversation with Ryan, Channing and Fred as he shares key moments along his journey to success that have shaped him in his daily life, the entertainment industry, his athlete encounters and how he became “black famous." Gary walks the guys through his life path: from what it was like growing up on a farm and in a trailer park to joining the Navy to his biggest Pivot of deciding to pursue comedy and chase his dreams in Hollywood. Always being one to make people laugh on the spot, Owen talks about his time with the military, growing up in Ohio and details his long-love for black women and his rise in popularity amongst black community. Gary talks about recent comic beef and immersing himself in the cultural back and forth and music battles with a light heat and fun intentions. Although it's always laughs and smiles with Gary, he sheds some light on the pain he felt from his divorce, hurting people he cares about and how part of his healing was being able to share lessons through laughter while on tours from city to city. Going through personal matters in the public eye is never easy but Gary opens up about the end of his marriage, owns his part in the situation, talks about his new relationship and focuses on how mending the hurt with his kids took time but is grateful for the progress which has enabled him to have somewhat of a blended family now. From comedy tours to movie screens, Gary has carved a niche in entertainment working with everyone in the industry and thankful to Kevin Hart for opportunities that has helped sustain his success while trying to maintain his small-town demeanor despite having celebrity friends and running in same circles with athletes. Gary and Channing trade comedic stories about meeting LeBron James at the urinal and Bill Parcells coaching while in the hot tub. Gary, a die-hard Cincinnati Bengals fan, who is mesmerized with the talents of Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, is like the rest of the sports world trying to figure out how one of the NFL's most potent offenses has a losing record. Don't let the orange and black fool you, Gary seems to have a unique relationship with the Pittsburgh Steelers too, dating back to meeting Ben Roethlisberger before he became Big Ben, and how he respects the organization from top to bottom, even with a sport crush on Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, especially after watching the new Hard Knocks episodes. The guys wrap up with where Owen is at with his career now, what's next, his dream role and who he thinks is the king of comedy...Fred even gets him to make his 2025 prediction like Kat Williams, as Gary gives us a look inside to the world of comedians and how things really are despite what people think. Don't miss our latest conversation full of laughs, lessons and one of a kind storytelling as Gary navigates the challenges of life.
