"Are you not entertained? You will be." I am Maximus Decimus Meridius, and I bring you word of a tale—of honor, betrayal, vengeance, and glory. This week, the warriors known as Three Guys and a Flick—Don, John, and Ken—enter the great arena to review Gladiator, Ridley Scott's epic saga of Rome's might and man's resolve. They speak of my rise and fall… and rise again. They will recount the treachery of Commodus, the fury of the Colosseum, and the moment a fallen general revealed his name to an emperor. The music of Zimmer will thunder. The sands will run red with insight. So gather, citizens of the empire, and bear witness to a discussion worthy of Elysium. Because what we say in this episode… echoes in eternity.
His name is Maximus Decimus Meridius... No, it's not - it's Edward Creamer and he is our very special guest on today's episode of Pole, Piaffe & Prosecco. Why the Gladiator link? Stunt rider Ed has run a training yard and competed at Grand Prix, but when it became difficult to turn a profit running a yard, he diversified. Although he still trains, rides and teaches, he has turned his skill set to the silver screen, riding in films like Gladiator 2. He also performs in live shows to demonstrate jousting and skills at arms. Tania and Katie loved chatting to Ed and we hope you enjoy hearing about life as a stunt rider!
We Watched So Much Stuff This Week This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review… Gladiator II, Transformers One, the penultimate Supes & Lolo, and the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Gladiator 2: 4:28 Transformers: One: 17:54 Supes & Lolo: 30:35 Dunc: Prophecy: 44:25 Gladiator 2 (2024) Out of 10 Lucius Was Not A Treat Clarks Darryl: 6/10 Brian: 8.2/10 Summary “Gladiator II,” directed by Ridley Scott, is a 2024 epic historical action film that serves as a sequel to the 2000 classic “Gladiator.” The story is set 16 years after the original, focusing on Lucius Verus Aurelius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius and Lucilla. Living under the alias “Hanno” in Numidia, Lucius's life is shattered when General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) leads a Roman invasion that results in the death of his wife and his enslavement. Forced into the gladiatorial arena, Lucius seeks vengeance against Acacius and the corrupt twin emperors, Geta and Caracalla. He gains the mentorship of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a former slave and ambitious arms dealer with his own designs on power. As Lucius rises through the ranks of gladiators, he discovers his true heritage and confronts the political machinations of Rome, mirroring the journey of his father, Maximus. The film features intense combat sequences, including battles against exotic animals like rhinos and sharks, and delves into themes of revenge, identity, and the quest for justice. While it expands on the original's narrative, some critics note that it lacks the emotional depth of its predecessor. Nonetheless, “Gladiator II” offers a visually spectacular experience with strong performances, particularly from Washington, who brings a compelling presence to the role of Macrinus. “Gladiator II” was released in theaters on November 22, 2024, and has received generally positive reviews from critics. Transformers One (2024) Out of 10 I’d Want to Kill Orion Pax Toos Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 6.4/10 Summary “Transformers One” is a 2024 American animated science fiction action film that explores the origins of the iconic characters Optimus Prime and Megatron. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film features a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax (who becomes Optimus Prime) and Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 (who becomes Megatron). Set on the planet Cybertron, the narrative delves into the early relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, who start as close friends bonded like brothers. As the story unfolds, their differing ideologies lead to a rift, setting the stage for the epic conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. The film also introduces other key characters, such as Elita-1 (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) and B-127 (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), providing a rich backstory to the Transformers universe. “Transformers One” premiered in Sydney, Australia, on September 11, 2024, and was released in the United States on September 20, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its storytelling, animation, and voice performances. However, it underperformed at the box office, grossing approximately $128.9 million worldwide against a budget estimated between $75 million and $147 million. For those interested in watching the film, “Transformers One” is available for streaming on Paramount+. Superman and Lois (The CW) Out of 5 Never Trust a Human Hearts Darryl: 4.45/5 Brian: 4.35/5 Summary In the penultimate episode of “Superman & Lois,” titled “To Live and Die Again,” the series sets the stage for a climactic finale. The episode features the return of Doomsday, now portrayed in a highly comic-accurate form, intensifying the threat to Superman and his family. The narrative delves into the aftermath of Superman's public revelation of his dual identity as Clark Kent, exploring the personal and societal ramifications of this disclosure. Additionally, Lois Lane receives a positive update regarding her battle with breast cancer, marking a significant moment in her character arc. The episode culminates in an emotional cliffhanger, setting up a high-stakes confrontation in the series finale. This installment effectively balances action and character development, paving the way for a compelling conclusion to the series. Dune: Prophecy (HBO Max) Out of 10 Burn in My Lights Darryl: 7.75/10 Brian: 7.1/10 Summary “Dune: Prophecy” is a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's “Dune,” focusing on the origins of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Here's a summary of the first two episodes: Episode 1: “The Hidden Hand” The series opens with Mother Superior Raquella Berto-Anirul (Cathy Tyson) leading the fledgling Sisterhood on Wallach IX. She entrusts Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) with the mission to expand and fortify the Sisterhood's influence. Valya, driven by her family's tarnished legacy, employs the Sisterhood's secretive breeding program and mental conditioning to manipulate political dynamics across the Imperium. A significant plot involves the arranged marriage between Princess Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and young noble Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior), orchestrated to stabilize the Imperial bloodline. However, the emergence of Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a mysterious soldier with newfound powers from Arrakis, disrupts these plans. Desmond's actions culminate in the simultaneous deaths of Pruwet and Imperial Truthsayer Kasha Jinjo (Jihae), signaling a formidable threat to the Sisterhood's schemes. Episode 2: “Two Wolves” In the aftermath of the dual assassinations, Valya seeks to counter Desmond's menace. She travels to Salusa Secundus to interrogate Desmond, who openly admits to the killings, revealing his immunity to the Sisterhood's manipulative techniques like “The Voice.” Meanwhile, on Wallach IX, young acolyte Lila undergoes “The Agony,” a perilous ritual intended to unlock ancestral memories. During this process, Lila encounters the spirit of Raquella, who imparts cryptic warnings about impending dangers. The episode delves into the internal dynamics of the Sisterhood, highlighting the challenges Valya faces in consolidating power amid external threats and internal dissent. These episodes lay the groundwork for a complex narrative of political intrigue, mystical traditions, and the struggle for dominance within the Imperium. From the blood-soaked sands of the Colosseum to the hushed halls of the Senate, a shadow looms large over the Roman Empire. It's not the specter of barbarian hordes, but something far more insidious: a sequel. Ridley Scott returns to the world of gladiators and emperors, but is this triumphant return, or a tragic stumble? On this episode of The Film Senate, Pete, Steve, Justin, and Tommy grapple with the cinematic beast that is Gladiator 2. The whispers started early – Denzel Washington, an acting titan, seemingly adrift in a sea of CGI sharks and misplaced baboons. Could this truly be the legacy of Maximus Decimus Meridius?Join us as we whack away at the film's triumphs and failures, exploring the delicate balance between historical epic and over-the-top spectacle. We'll certainly talk performances, from Paul Mescal's stoic Lucius to Denzel's enigmatic Senate leader, a man seemingly battling his own wardrobe as much as the forces of corruption. And along the way, we'll ponder the questionable editing choices, the abrupt cutaways, the lingering shots of… two emaciated dogs?Is Gladiator 2 a worthy successor to the throne, or a pretender destined for the thumbs down? Enter the arena and decide for yourself. But be warned, you may never look at a baboon the same way again. Reduced to slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator and rises through the ranks of the arena, determined to avenge the murders of his family and the emperor. The screenplay, initially written by Franzoni, was inspired by the 1958 Daniel P. Mannix novel Those About to Die. The script was acquired by DreamWorks Pictures, and Scott signed on to direct the film. Principal photography began in January 1999 and wrapped in May of that year. Production was complicated by the script being rewritten multiple times and by the death of Oliver Reed before production was finished.Gladiator had its world premiere in Los Angeles, California, on May 1, 2000. The film was released in the United States on May 5, 2000 by DreamWorks and internationally on May 12, 2000 by Universal Pictures. The film grossed $465.4 million worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing film of 2000, and won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. A sequel, Gladiator II, was released in November 2024.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000) wasn't just a movie—it was an event, a cultural phenomenon that revived the sword-and-sandal epic for a modern audience. In this week's Born to Watch podcast episode, we take a deep dive with our Gladiator (2000) Movie Review, a timeless classic that set the bar for historical dramas, earning critical acclaim and five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. With stunning visuals, a poignant score, and unforgettable performances, Gladiator remains one of cinema's greatest achievements. The Story That Defined a GenerationAt its core, Gladiator is a revenge tale wrapped in the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a loyal Roman general betrayed by the scheming Commodus, played with unsettling intensity by Joaquin Phoenix. Stripped of his rank, family, and freedom, Maximus is forced into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat. As he rises through the ranks of the arena, he becomes a beacon of hope and rebellion, culminating in a battle not just for his life but for the soul of Rome itself. What makes Gladiator resonate so deeply is its ability to blend intimate human drama with epic stakes. Maximus's vendetta against Commodus intertwines with his larger quest for justice, making every clash in the Colosseum emotionally charged. The screenplay, penned by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, is poetic and visceral, delivering lines like “Are you not entertained?” that have become iconic in pop culture.A Visual and Sonic MasterpieceRidley Scott is a director known for his meticulous attention to detail, and Gladiator is no exception. The film's portrayal of ancient Rome is nothing short of breathtaking. Using a mix of practical sets, CGI, and miniatures, Scott and cinematographer John Mathieson recreated the grandeur of the Colosseum and the chaotic energy of Rome's streets with staggering realism.Equally stunning is Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's haunting score. The music perfectly captures the film's shifting tones, from the mournful longing of Maximus's loss to the triumphant swell of his victories. Tracks like “Now We Are Free” remain synonymous with the film's legacy, blending orchestral power with ethereal vocals to evoke an almost mythic quality.A Performance for the AgesRussell Crowe's portrayal of Maximus is the beating heart of Gladiator. His transformation from a respected general to a vengeful gladiator is physically demanding and emotionally rich. Crowe embodies Maximus with a quiet intensity, delivering a performance that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. His ability to convey a deep well of grief, determination, and defiance elevates the character into the realm of timeless cinematic heroes.Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus, on the other hand, is a masterclass in villainy. He's not just evil for the sake of it—he's deeply insecure, desperate for approval, and chillingly manipulative. Phoenix walks a delicate line, making Commodus repulsive yet compelling, a character you can't look away from, no matter how despicable his actions. The supporting cast, including Connie Nielsen as the morally torn Lucilla and Richard Harris as the wise Emperor Marcus Aurelius, rounds out the ensemble with gravitas and depth. Even in smaller roles, the film excels in giving its characters memorable moments that add richness to the world.Themes That Echo Through HistoryGladiator isn't just a feast for the senses—it's a film that grapples with timeless themes. Justice, loyalty, and the corrupting nature of power all play pivotal roles in the story. Maximus's journey is as much about reclaiming his honour as it is toppling a corrupt regime. His mantra, “What we do in life echoes in eternity,” underscores the film's meditation on legacy and the impact of our actions. The movie also speaks to the enduring appeal of underdog stories. Maximus's rise from slave to hero taps into a universal desire for justice and redemption, making his triumphs all the more cathartic. At the same time, the film doesn't shy away from the brutality of its world, reminding us that victory often comes at a high cost.A Lasting LegacyWhen Gladiator hit theatres in 2000, it reignited interest in historical epics, paving the way for films like Troy, 300, and Kingdom of Heaven. But few have matched its impact. Its influence extends beyond the genre, inspiring video games, TV series, and countless parodies in pop culture. The film's success also cemented Ridley Scott's reputation as a visionary director and launched Russell Crowe into superstardom. It remains a benchmark for storytelling and craftsmanship, a movie that feels as fresh and powerful today as it did over two decades ago.Why We Still Love GladiatorSo why does Gladiator still hold such a special place in our hearts? Part of it is the sheer spectacle—few films manage to combine action, drama, and historical detail so seamlessly. But more than that, it's the emotional core of the story. Maximus's journey is one of loss, perseverance, and ultimate redemption, themes that resonate universally.Watching Gladiator is an experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Whether it's the breathtaking battles, the nuanced performances, or the hauntingly beautiful score, every element works in harmony to create something truly unforgettable.Final ThoughtsOur latest Born to Watch podcast episode celebrates everything that makes Gladiator a masterpiece. From its technical achievements to its emotional depth, the film is a triumph in every sense of the word. It's a reminder of why we go to the movies—to be moved, thrilled, and inspired. If you haven't revisited Gladiator lately, now is the perfect time. As Maximus would say, “Strength and Honour”—this movie delivers both in spades.

Are you not entertained?! Well, the audiences of 2000 certainly were, with a box office smash hit and winner of 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, I think ole Russel come be comforted he won't be eating Crowe with this film by one Sir Ridley Scott. But, 24 years later and with an upcoming sequel on the horizon, the Mixed Bag crew thought they should dust off the dirt like Maximus loves to do and see if we are glad to set our eyes upon Gladiator (2000). In the year 180, the death of emperor Marcus Aurelius throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus is one of the Roman army's most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus' devious son Commodus ascends to the throne, Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders. Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must battle to the death with other men for the amusement of paying audiences. (Sourced from Letterboxd) Is the young Richard Harris a hottie? Is Oliver Reed playing a POC or just suuuuper tan? And will Maximus Decimus Meridius have his vengeance, in this life or the next? Ultron keert terug als good guy in Armor Wars? ------ Spotify ► https://spoti.fi/2qhR6lr Apple Podcast ► https://apple.co/3GzfqqD Twitter ► https://www.twitter.com/NerdCulturePC Instagram ► https://www.instagram.com/NerdCulture.PC Jelle ► https://www.twitter.com/GKJelle Huey ► https://www.twitter.com/RealHueyBrown Koos ► https://www.twitter.com/jtmooten Outro by Studio Megaane

There are so many reasons why I decided to start and build a cleaning company. I want to talk about an internal motivation that's always been beneath the surface. And I suspect it's in you as well. What does your name mean to you? I want to inspire you to desire a good name. This is called legacy. First, I want to read you a quote from King Solomon. Now who is King Solomon? Let me build up his credibility. King Solomon is the richest and the wisest man in human history. He reigned over the Kingdom of Israel from 970 to 930 BC. Scholars have estimated his wealth in current dollars around $2.2 trillion. For perspective, the richest man in the world right now is Bernard Arnault, who is worth around $200 billion. If King Solomon were alive today, he would be worth 10 times that of Arnault. Here's more perspective. If you search Google for the richest man of all time, they seem to omit King Solomon. You will find Mansa Musa who reigned King of the Mali Empire from 1280 to 1337 AD. His net worth in today's dollars is estimated at $400 billion. This is two times the richest man today. Yet King Solomon is still five times wealthier than Mansa Musa. I have even more perspective. Do you know how King Solomon got so wealthy? He inherited some from his dad, King David. But did you know that world leaders at that time would literally travel far distances via camel, I suppose, just to hear his wisdom and learn from him. They would bring him the wealth of their country and give it as a tribute just to hear him talk. This is mind-boggling to me. I shared all this because King Solomon wrote a book that I read often. It's called Proverbs and it's found in the Old Testament of the Bible. "A good name [earned by honorable behavior, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity] is more desirable than great riches; And favor is better than silver and gold." – Proverbs 22:1 Amplified, Attributed to King Solomon I first read this at the age of 25, when the Bible was still new to me. But this verse really captured my heart. I wanted to make a name for myself. I wanted to make those that poured into me and made our name valuable, proud of me. I wanted to carry on their legacy. Here's a few examples of men who knew their name and purpose. "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." Inigo Montoya knew his name and he knew his purpose. "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife." Now that's a man who knew his name and his purpose. The first one is a little bit silly from "The Princess Bride", but it does show the power in a name. The second one from "Gladiator" is just chilling and awesome and gets men to want to fight for this man.Now it's my turn. My name is Kenneth Joseph Carfagno, III. I was named after my Pop-Pop, Kenneth Joseph Carfagno, Sr. My father Kenneth Joseph Carfagno, Jr. named his firstborn son after his father. My Pop-Pop, Kenneth Sr. was the sixth child, and fifth son of Genaro Carfagno. Genaro was the firstborn of eight kids of Giuseppe Carfagno. Giuseppe is Italian for Joseph and Genaro is Italian for Jerry. So I carry the name of four generations of my fathers. My middle is Joseph, the English version of my great-great grandfather Giuseppe. My first name Kenneth is the same as my father and grandfather. That is so cool to me. So much has been poured into me and into that name. I feel the weight of responsibility to make that name even better!Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

My oldest son Josiah turned 14-years-old yesterday, and we celebrated in part by watching the movie Gladiator. The film opens with an epic battle between Rome and the barbarian hordes. Then secret meetings are called by the emperor. Commodus soon casts Maximus as the rebel. Yet it is Commodus who murders his father, Marcus Aurelius, and usurped the throne. So long as everyone around affirms the madman as the rightful ruler, Rome is doomed. It is not a question of whether, but when. Excepting the proper and needful defiance of Maximus, the whole empire descends into chaos, poverty, and starvation. "Fear is the mind-killer," as Frank Herbert famously put it. So long as Commodus is able to terrorize everyone into affirming him and treating Maximus as the traitor, the truth will not win out. Neither will justice. But insofar as Maximus is given a free hand to stand on principle, he is maintaining the best of what the tradition of Western Civilization affords. Who knows what Marcus Aurelius told Maximus in private about restoring the Republic prior to the suffocation of the hoary-headed philosopher king at the hands of his immoral son? None save Maximus until the end. So Maximus is to be taken outside the camp and executed for refusing to kiss the hand of Commodus. And not only he, but also his wife and son are to be killed by the dutiful soldiers of Rome. This is not to punish Maximus still further, but to serve as a warning. Whoever would dare to oppose Commodus can expect the same. Whatever faithful service they rendered to the wise, good king who preceded this pretender is now forgotten or even resented. Meanwhile, Senators Gracchus and Gaius work behind the scenes, meeting with Lucilla in secret to discuss the situation. Rome will starve in two years because all the stores of grain are being sold to finance the bread and circuses designed to win a fleeting, temporary love for Commodus. They settle on waiting until Commodus has more enemies than friends. That is when they will strike. Only that day will never come so long as all are too afraid of personal loss to risk meaningful, manful opposition. Does all of this sound familiar? It should. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
This month, your friendly Oscarologists, Mark, Izzy and Vincent, discuss the Academy's penchant for historical epics. Braveheart, directed by and starring Mel Gibson, tells the story of hero and warrior William Wallace, who leads the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against wily King Edward I played by Patrick McGoohan. Director Ridley Scott - one of modern Hollywood's main purveyors of sword and sandal movies - gained a Best Director nomination for Gladiator, winning Best Picture. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, general turned slave turned arena fighter, out for revenge again Joaquin Phoenix's Emperor Commodus. In the movie "Gladiator," Maximus Decimus Meridius goes from being a general in the Roman army to being a slave and gladiator. Maximus is incredibly skilled in combat, but no matter his arena, he never goes out to fight without his body armor, shield and sword. The Greek word for “whole armor” in Ephesians 6 is “panoplia,” which refers to the shield and weapons of a fully armed soldier. Knowing our lives will be faced with trouble, and that Satan’s mission is to steal, kill, and destroy, Paul advises us to put on the full armor of God.As humans, we were not meant to fight the troubles of this world on our own. Our enemy is powerful, but the Lord trumps the enemy’s power by a long shot, and He gives us exactly what we need to stand firm against our enemy. The armor God gives us — righteousness, salvation, faith, the Bible, peace, the Holy Spirit, and prayer — offer far more strength than physical armor ever could. With these tools, we can defend ourselves against the enemy in the tough times and train proactively in good times.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/yourdailybible)

I loved the movie Gladiator. Memory tells me, I went to see the film anywhere from 6 to 8 times on the big screen. I was mesmerized by it. Such a colossal spectacle in every single way – the music, the opening battle sequence, the costumes, the plot, the words, the vengeance, the colosseum battles, and the brilliance of Maximus Decimus Meridius, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, Lucilla, Proximo, and Senator Gracchus. #DayWithoutAWoman #IStrikeFor #Resistance
SPOILER: Reviewing movies, books & TV shows in their entirety
"At my signal, unleash hell" The keyword this week is EPIC as we watch Ridley Scott's Gladiator, and we quickly discover that our very own Rachael actually worked on this movie! She lets us in on the experience of making a wig for the modest and self-effacing Russell Crowe and decries the lack of credit given to wig makers in movies. Paul has been working on his best Maximus Decimus Meridius impression, eulogising Oliver Reed and spotting "The Voice of Iggle Piggle", and the team are mystified at Russell Crowe's Oscar win and come to the conclusion he won it mainly for "squinting a bit". And we hear about a cancelled sequel which would have featured a time travelling Maximus in Vietnam – which Paul swears he hasn't made up. Meanwhile, Andy's verdict: "It was good". Elsewhere in a packed show, Rachael is inspired by one of the famous improvised lines in Gladiator to look at some more unplanned moments in movies, including Pretty Woman, Good Will Hunting and Harry Potter. And Andy is surprised by the appearance of UK comedian Omid Djalili in Gladiator and seeks out some more unexpected appearances of UK television stars in big Hollywood movies, including Leonard Rossiter and Keith Chegwin! This week's scale: Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down

Have you ever heard someone’s name and thought to yourself, “now that’s a name!” It was a name so powerful that no matter how hard you tried you couldn’t get rid of the name. I am drawn to a movie from the early turn of the millennium that won multiple Academy Awards including best picture and best actor; the movie in question is Gladiator. The main character is played by Russell Crowe the star of the recent controversial film Noah. In the movie Crowe’s character is certainly a man to look up to and a man who indeed has a powerful name; his name is Maximus. I am assuming considering the age of the movie most of you are familiar with the plot line so I’m not worried about having to post a spoiler alert. Maximus served the Roman Empire as a general of the armies of the North. The murderous new Caesar Commodus sends Maximus away to be killed because of his knowledge of Commodus’ evil deed in killing his own father. After narrowly escaping death at the hands of Roman soliders Maximus finds himself sold into the life of a gladiator. In one of the most powerful scenes of the movie Maximus reveals his identity in front of the crowds at the Coliseum and Caesar himself who had assumed he was long dead. As he announces his name you get a sense on the value of this man’s character as he states, “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” ooh in your face Caesar. What a powerful name and it was so powerful that in the following scene Maximus is surrounded by his closest gladiator companions and one of them comments, “You have a great name, he must kill your name before he kills you!” And that’s what’s in a name…it doesn’t matter if you cannot live forever you can still live on in the memory of your name.
