Annemieke Bosman praat met Ralph Keuning, hij cureert de beeldententoonstelling ARTZUID, vanaf nu tot en met 21 september te zien in Amsterdam-Zuid. Internationale topkunstenaars en jong Nederlands talent tekenen voor de beelden en installaties die deze zomer te zien zijn op de Amsterdamse Apollolaan, Minervalaan en Zuidas. ARTZUID transformeert deze lanen tot een surreëel stedelijk landschap waarin figuratief werk wordt afgewisseld met architectonisch aandoende abstracte beelden. Ze vertonen een grote variëteit in formaat en materiaal. Wat ze verbindt is hun focus op het raadsel van het menselijke bestaan. De verwondering, de emoties en de visioenen van het zijn. De ambities en de angsten over onze plaats in de wereld. Kunstenaars als Leiko Ikemura, Alicja Kwade en Neo Rauch nodigen de bezoeker uit tot een gedachtewisseling hierover, een zinnelijk gesprek met de beelden. Pregnant getoond wordt de ontreddering van de bezetting, de angst voor de oorlog en de geest van verzet in de bijdragen van kunstenaars als Magdalena Abakanowicz, Shinkichi Tajiri en Armando. Atelier van Lieshout refereert aan macht en onmacht, strijd en slachtofferschap, in een groep figuren rond een ruiter te paard. In het parcours van ArtZuid wordt dit werk in verbinding gebracht met het Monument Indië-Nederland op de Apollolaan. Dit zijn maar enkele voorbeelden van de meer dan 60 werken die ArtZuid bevolken. Deelnemende kunstenaars zijn onder meer: Arlene Shechet, Alicja Kwade, Nadia Naveau, Leiko Ikemura, Paloma Varga Weisz, Lina Iris Victor, Tschabalala Self, Leilah Babirye, Marion Verboom.

Kinderzeichnungen von Neo Rauch aus den Jahren 1965 bis 1968 stehen jetzt im Zentrum der neuen Jahresausstellung der Grafikstiftung Aschersleben. Sie bieten eine neue Sicht auf den weltbekannten Maler und Grafiker.

Goldene Äpfel - dieses Bild von Neo Rauch mutet von der Malweise und der Farbigkeit her nostalgisch an. Trotzdem unterscheidet es sich stark von altmeisterlichen Werken, denn inhaltlich stiftet das Bild Verwirrung. Es liefert den Beginn einer Geschichte, die irgendwo versandet und Unzufriedenheit zurücklässt. Gerade das macht vielleicht den Reiz von Neo Rauchs Arbeiten aus. Zumindest ein paar Äpfel im Bild scheinen aus reinem Gold zu sein. Ihnen wird von drei vornehm gekleideten Personen ein besonderer Blick und ungewöhnlich starke Bewunderung entgegen gebracht. Die Szenerie ist eingebettet in eine herbstlich-braune Weltuntergangsstimmung. Immerhin haben wir die Kostbarkeiten der Natur. Darauf können wir uns verlassen.

Wenn Kristina Schuldt die Leinwand bespielt, macht sie das schwungvoll und dynamisch. Ihr Personal inszeniert sie selbstbewusst und kraftvoll, fast immer deutungsoffen. Erkennbar ist ihre Auseinandersetzung mit Figuren der Klassischen Moderne wie Léger oder Picasso; die Künstlerin setzt in ihren großformatigen Arbeiten immer wieder an mit neuen und eigenen Deutungen. Die 1982 in Moskau geborene Kristina Schuldt studierte Grafik, Buchkunst und Malerei in Leipzig, wurde nach ihrem Diplom Meisterschülerin von Neo Rauch, dem bedeutendsten Vertreter der sogenannten Leipziger Schule. Unter dem Titel „Unverwüstlich“ zeigt Kristina Schuldt im Mönchehaus Museum Goslar ihre Werke aus den letzten zehn Jahren.

Rosa Loy ist eine der bekanntesten Vertreterinnen der Neuen Leipziger Schule. Bei Thomas Bille berichtet sie über den Weg dahin genauso wie über den Austausch mit ihrem Mann Neo Rauch, mit dem sie Wand an Wand arbeitet.

Leipzig gilt als Kunststadt - Künstler wie Neo Rauch oder Max Beckmann sind mit ihr verbunden. Mit der "Leipziger Schule" hat sie ihre Spuren in der Kunstgeschichte hinterlassen. Doch wer steckt hinter dieser "Schule"?

More than 100 artists work and create at Leipzig's former cotton mill, known locally as merely the Spinnerei. Reporter Hannah Hummel went to Saxony to see Jochen Plogsties in his studio there. He was a master pupil of the internationally renowned Leipzig painter Neo Rauch.

Where are you on your creative journey? Do you have the right pieces in place yet or are you still trying to figure things out? If you feel like this last year or so has taken you through the wringer, you are not alone! Many of us are just now starting to get our bearings back after a year of isolation and adjustment. Here to help us navigate through the ebb and flow of creativity and the wild journey we find ourselves on is my guest and the talented artist, Gabe Brown.  Gabe was raised in New York City. She received her BFA degree from The Cooper Union and was awarded a Full Fellowship to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She went on to receive her MFA in Painting from the University of California, Davis. Her work is included in both public and private collections. She is an Adjunct Professor in Painting and Drawing at Fordham University and SUNY New Paltz where she has received three Merit Awards for Professional Achievement. Gabe lives and works in the Hudson Valley. I can’t wait for you to get to know Gabe’s fascinating perspective - also make sure to check out images of Gabe’s artwork located at the end of this post.  Perseverance through uncertainty  Let’s face it, the last year with COVID has been challenging to say the least. While some of us have been able to leverage this time as an opportunity to try something new, there are those who have been stuck either creatively, emotionally, or otherwise. Part of understanding and adapting to your own unique ebb and flow of creativity is giving yourself space and understanding.  If you had a friend who was having a hard time with the isolation and abrupt change that COVID has wrought, how would you treat them? Most people would be kind and empathetic - why wouldn’t you give yourself that same treatment? I found Gabe’s experience of persevering through the uncertainty of COVID inspiring but I found her compassion for those who are struggling - even more so. Remember, we are all in this together - I’ve got your back and I’m trusting that you’ve got mine!  Absorbing and applying Everyone's a little different and we need to find our own method and pattern for our creativity. Gabe was kind enough to open up about her own season of absorbing and applying. For Gabe, absorbing is a time of observation - reading, taking walks, going to museums or galleries, Googling different artists. Then comes the moment of application - some way those observations start to make their way through to the surface of the creative process. Her end goal is to take all the information that she just absorbed and then somehow apply it to her studio practice to help perfect her craft.  What are you waiting for? Seriously? I know that the fear of failure can be intense - trust me, I’ve been there. But honestly, what do you have to lose? Don’t let the fear of failure keep you from exploring the possibilities that are right in front of you. I know that the journey is not an easy one, Gabe knows that too but what we want you to know is that it is worth it. I hope you found Gabe’s story an inspiring and encouraging one. Neo Rauch gilt einer der international bekanntesten zeitgenössischen Künstler aus Deutschland. Anders als viele andere Kolleg*innen, wohnt und arbeitet er weiterhin nicht in Berlin, sondern wie eh und je in Leipzig.

Der Kunsthistoriker Wolfgang Ullrich arbeitet sich weiter an seinem Konflikt mit Neo Rauch ab – ein Thema heute im Feuilleton mit Jörg Schieke.

Wagners romantische Oper „Lohengrin“ erzählt die schicksalhafte Geschichte der Elsa von Brabant und ihres „Schwanenritters“ Lohengrin. Jetzt ist das Libretto in einer Neu-Edition beim Verlag C. H. A few years ago when we published our first interview with East German-born, London-based painter and almost mythical figure Super Future Kid, our deputy editor Kristin Farr asked the artist what her superpowers were. We will never forget the answer: "To be incredibly childish and yet able to do all the grown up stuff." That has stuck with us. As an artist with the incredible gift of making her paintings look almost digital and yet definitely hand-painted, who has created characters with almost hype-color characteristics and unmistakable details in her presentation, Super Future Kid has carved out one of the most singular and individualistic careers in the art world. And yet no matter how far she goes and acclaimed she may be, Super Future Kid has a creative energy and sense of wonderment that is infectious. Born in East Germany in the early 1980s, she claims she never saw color until the Wall came down. She says, "I spent the first eight years of my life not knowing that there was a universe of colors, toys and all kinds of fun things waiting for me on the other side of the Wall. I had a great childhood but it got a massive upgrade after November ’89!" This detail is essential in understanding the universe she has created. These characters and colors are an extension of how incredible the impression that cartoons, candy, toys, animations, films had on her at a young age. That sudden culture shock, is, what we learned in this podcast, still a major influence and driving force her work today. For this episode of Radio Juxtapoz, we spoke with Super Future Kid from her studio in London as she had just sent a new body of work, Seaweed Sunrise, to Hong Kong for a solo show at Over the Influence. Of course, the conversation ranged from the disappointment of not being able to attend her opening, and the challenges that Covid has had on her year. But we also dug deep into her memories of East Germany, how pop-culture surprised and inspired her works, how she was influenced by Neo Rauch and how making work under a moniker has allowed her to be even more creative. NY-based fine artist Anna Park's charcoal works immediately caught our eye and felt like the perfect reflection of our times. Not in an overtly, politics-by-numbers sort of way. But in a chaotic world, where emotions tend to ebb and flow by the second, with news and even worse news hitting us constantly, these works are about release. That moment, as she notes, between "ecstasy and pure fuckery," when, as an observer, you have an out of body experience at a party, perhaps too drunk, and you can soak in that balance all at once. It disappears quickly, this awareness, but Anna Park is documenting that feeling. That moment. As Juxtapoz unveils the Fall 2019 issue, we sat down with featured artist and current New York Academy of Art student, Anna Park, to talk about how these works have taken the attention of the art world in less than a year. We discuss how this transition happened, as well as her recent residency in Neo Rauch's hometown in Germany, what its like to balance her last year of study with a budding fine art career and how a childhood of relocating around the world has found its way into these ghostly, yet powerful, new works. "I’m in the studio almost every day, and usually begin the day with two to three hours of thinking, almost as if I’m finding or retracing my way back into a painting.." You were recently in a group show called "Part II: The Turning World" Curated by Zavier Ellis at CHARLIE SMITH LONDON. Could you tell us about that show?The show was a three-person show about contemporary landscape painting and included Barry Thompson, Sam Douglas and myself obviously. Zavier Ellis, the Director of Charlie Smith Gallery, came to my studio a while back, just for a nose I think, and I have a vague idea that, although landscape is just one genre I use, (constitutes about a quarter of what I make), the show may have evolved as a result of a conversation we had about a group of landscapes that I had made or that were on the go, something about a tension between a fiction and a realism dichotomy - finding ‘a realism’ through ‘a fiction’. I think Zavier expanded and layered this idea and curated the whole thing, and presented three painters that occupy three very different and distinct positions with regard to landscape painting, and for me, the show did aim to constitute something of a tension between fiction and realism.Could you tell us a bit about yourself? How long have you been a practising artist and where did you study?I studied at Kingston University in the mid eighties and have been painting since then. I’ve also worked as a curator, mainly for independent project spaces, and I have written about painting. I founded Turps Banana with Marcus Harvey in 2005 (although I left three years ago), and I also founded the painting gallery The Lion and Lamb (which closed three years ago). What is your studio like?I’m in the studio almost every day, and usually begin the day with two to three hours of thinking, almost as if I’m finding or retracing my way back into a painting or paintings. I usually make a body of work of between twelve to twenty paintings simultaneously. Some paintings might be finished or close to being finished and they will influence or define ideas about other paintings that are in progress, which in turn will suggest new paintings. Some days I’ll paint for seven to eleven hours straight without a break, other days I’ll make drawings or just sit and think for hours – it really depends on the developing consciousness of the work.My studio is at Standpoint Studios in Hoxton, London and I’ve been there for seventeen years. Standpoint, in my opinion, is quite a unique set-up in the sense that it is well run, everyone just gets on with their work, but there is also a lot of humour and friendship. The top sections of my studio walls are covered with drawings that serve the development of ideas for paintings. I have a ‘main’ wall on which I hang the paintings that ‘I’m painting’ and the rest of the paintings that are on the go are hung on other walls as if they are waiting their turn for attention. The scale of paintings varies from twelve inches to six-foot stretchers - in my opinion scale is dictated by content. There are a lot of books in the studio, some on work surfaces, others on the studio floor along with loads of notebooks, sketchbooks of drawings, more drawings and block prints. 'the pot' 2011 'in that large book that overhangs the earth' 2016 'the pragmatic smokeman' 2016 What artwork have you seen recently that has resonated with you?For me, resonance is really about what contributes to and extends your thinking at a given time, and in that sense, I look at a lot of painting from many different periods. More specifically though, in terms of what or who I constantly go back to and think about I’d have to say medieval illuminated manuscript paintings, the northern and southern renaissance painters (particularly Breugel and Titian), Degas, Monet, early Cubism (particularly Braque), the late Andre Derain paintings and some of Guston’s paintings. I did see a Neo Rauch show a while back which I thought was disappointing, and the recent Paul Nash retrospective, which I thought was one of the best shows I’ve seen for a while. With regards to particular works that resonate with me, I have to single out Hunters in the Snow by Breugel, The Death of Acteon by Titian and The Painter’s Family by Andre Derain.Where has your work been headed more recently?I finished a group of fifty-three paintings about eighteen months ago that took me five or six years to complete. Although most of them have been in shows over the years it has been important to me to see the group as an entirety, almost as if that group defines my range and intellectual and emotional structure. My objectification of what that group of paintings is about propelled me into a new group of paintings that feeds off the collapse of a long-term relationship and the death of my dog Milo last year, and they in turn refer, on an abstract level, to thoughts about the content and pictorial significance of Breugel’s Hunters in the Snow. "Part II: The Turning World", CHARLIE SMITH LONDON 2017 "Part II: The Turning World", CHARLIE SMITH LONDON 2017 How do you go about naming your work?Naming paintings is very important to me. I constantly remind myself of a quote from Shakespeare, “and gives to airy nothingness a local habitation and a name”. Objectification is always in play. All the titles of the paintings that were in The Turning World show refer to what is depicted, to ‘ the language of the painting’ and to words that might be used to describe a painting, such as The Passage, The Edge, The Field or The Hand Glider. The Passage emphasizes the light and space in the picture. The ‘painting’ in The Hand Glider implies ‘a gliding’ across the surface of the painting and the picture plane, almost as if the picture is suspended ‘within the surface’.Is there anything new and exciting in the pipeline you would like to tell us about?Yes, a solo show in October at Emma Hill’s gallery, and The Eagle Gallery in Clerkenwell, London. charliesmithlondon.comAll images courtesy of the artist and CHARLIE SMITH LONDONInterview published 01/06/17
