We are in a season of transition! It's been a wonderful journey as a trio, but with changing demands, Matt is going to step away from the podcast. We are grateful for the time and conversations we've had over the past four and a half years(!) and we wish him well as he moves into other adventures. Abby and Dave have decided to continue to record new episodes, and we hope you'll continue to join us in the metaphorical hallway. In today's episode, we are thinking about what it looks like to be in the middle of the semester when things feel a little stale…or maybe “the honeymoon is over!” We share some ideas and strategies we use to mix things up to look for ways to increase students' engagement, making the curriculum accessible and meaningful for our students. We hope you'll be encouraged to talk about your own strategies for mixing things up with colleagues in your hallways as well! We always love hearing from you, dear listeners. What if a few simple shifts could turn your math class into a place where more students talk, think, and truly learn? We start with our usual celebration of the "day of" by tipping our hats to Ada Lovelace. Then we ask the PL Team to share some of their "themes of support" that come up as they work with teachers during the beginning part of the year. The struggles and challenges that they face and some of the advice or suggestions that they share with these teachers. Hear about what “enough practice” really means and why demanding fluency too soon backfires. You'll hear how three-before-me and a strong Resource Manager cut down on the teacher traffic jam, and how behavior management gets easier when tasks are collaborative, non-routine, and designed with easy entry points. Our PL specialists share practical frameworks for keeping students engaged from bell to bell, plus the reflective questions that elevate planning: Are students collaborating? Will they share work publicly? Do they know how to begin? Then we go classroom-deep with an update from our Join Them on Their Journey teachers. Jessie talks about her experiment with daily randomized groups reduced off-task talk and amplified math voices that had been quiet for weeks, while Chi redesigned assessment to include a fast correction cycle using targeted indicators instead of immediate scores. If you're ready to boost fluency without sacrificing sense-making—and build a classroom culture where every student sees themselves as a math learner—press play. Subscribe, share this with a colleague, and leave a quick review telling us which strategy you'll try first.Send Joel and Misty a message! The More Math for More People Podcast is produced by CPM Educational Program.

Students are heading back to class - but school districts haven’t seen a cent from the state in two months. That drove the state's largest teachers' union to the state Capitol. Pennsylvania’s state budget delay and uncertainty are starting to cause a strain for some of the state’s nonprofits as well. A rash of hoax calls about active shooters on at least a dozen college campuses around the U.S. has spread fear among students as the school year begins. A judge in Lebanon County has upheld the conviction and sentence of a woman for her part in the death of a young boy. A federal appeals court says it's unconstitutional for Pennsylvania to throw out mail-in ballots simply because the voter didn’t write an accurate date on the return envelope. Lancaster County is at an increased risk for outbreaks of preventable diseases this fall. That's according to a doctor of pediatric infectious diseases with Penn State Health Children's Hospital. Caltech's board once had nearly 80 members; too many for focused discussion or quick decisions. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton talks with Cathy Light, Caltech's Secretary of the Board, about how the institution streamlined governance, strengthened committees, and made trustee reorientation mandatory. Light, who has held senior roles at Carnegie Mellon University and the Semester at Sea program, outlines how Caltech conducts trustee assessments, structures its executive committee, and uses an ongoing governance review to keep the board working at its best. Topics Covered: Governance changes prompted by the pandemic Defining trustee responsibilities in 2025 Using the executive committee for responsive decision-making The role of the governance and nominating committee Trustee assessments and renewal decisions Making orientation and reorientation standard practice Maintaining strategic oversight without micromanaging Involving alumni and students without adding voting seats Real-World Examples: Reducing the board from 80 members to a manageable size Giving young alumni trustees full voting rights Using retreats and campus visits to connect trustees with faculty research Three Takeaways for Leadership: Keep governance review continuous and adaptive. Use orientation and reorientation to maintain alignment. Structure boards for informed, timely decisions without overstepping into operations. For presidents, trustees, board chairs, board secretaries, and governance committees aiming to improve board effectiveness.
