137: What I Learned from Spending 20 Minutes Outside Every Day for 4 Years

Humans Outside

When Amy first started her outdoor challenge it wasn't to inspire anyone but herself to make getting into nature a daily habit. It wasn't even because she had found heading outside to be so transformative she had to do it every day. Originally, the 20 minute daily challenge was born of a question: how would her life change if she went outside for a certain amount of time every day for a year? The experiment started September 1, 2017. And there at the beginning was Amy's friend Holly Wise, helping her develop the concept just as she had for all of Amy's big ideas since 2004. Today, four years after starting her experiment hundreds and hundreds of hours outside as part of her daily practice Amy and Holly discuss what Amy has learned over the course of her habit -- and what you can learn, too. Some of the good stuff: [2:42] Amy's favorite outdoor space [4:37] A question no one is asking [5:47] What Amy has learned over the last four years [9:02] Was this a surprise? [12:00] The importance of incremental changes [16:24] How doing hard things outside helps with life inside [20:45] How she gets herself to do hard things [31:49] The stories we tell ourselves and why they matter [37:49] The going outside pep talks [49:02] Amy's relationship with nature [51:28] Amy's favorite and most essential outdoor gear [55:51] Amy's favorite outdoor moment Connect with this episode: Follow Amy Bushatz on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amybushatz Follow Humans Outside on Instagram: https://instagram.com/humansoutside Follow Humans Outside on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HumansOutside/ Register for the Humans Outside newsletter for a chance to win a decal: https://humansoutside.com/newsletter/

How do you know when a collaboration is right? How did things shift in your marriage when you and your husband started working together? Do you have any tips for running a business with your spouse? And making Him her CEO continues to drive her business success.  Not only that, she is making a positive impact on the world in ways she never dreamed possible. Amy is the cofounder of Eyes of Faith Optical, a Christian eyewear brand built around the principles of purpose, passion and style. She and her husband started the business in 2008 as a way to express their faith in a new way, and every purchase from Eyes of Faith has a give-back component that supports ministries and medical organizations around the world. On this episode of The Live Out Loud Show, Amy joins Brooke to explain how she took a leap of faith to found Eyes of Faith despite the economic collapse and health challenges she had at the time. When you think of a 100 million dollar company, you probably think of a CEO who was born for the role. You most likely assume she was cut straight from the cloth of parents who mentored her and let her sit on their laps in their big corner offices. Most people believe that is what it takes for someone to eventually own such a successful business themselves.   However, that is not Amy Langer’s story. She is the co-founder and owner of Salo, LLC, an 85 million dollar recruiting and staffing services company. Amy has driven the company's growth through brand affinity and by leading innovative strategic initiatives. All of that and she was raised on a farm.   In this episode, Amy and I talk all about her company’s success. We discuss their meteoric rise at the beginning, the challenges they encountered in the middle, and how they recovered and scaled their business to nearly nine figures. If you want to learn how to pivot and navigate any kind of tricky terrain in your business, tune in to my interview with Amy.   In this episode, you will hear: What Amy’s childhood experience was like. Where the idea and passion for Salo came from. What growing up on a farm taught Amy about business. What her team looked like early on. How the recession helped them develop and clarify their vision and mission. What they did to make it through the recession and the shifts they made as a result. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Amy Alznauer. Amy lives in Chicago with her husband, two children, a dog and her four puppies, a parakeet, sometimes chicks and a part-time fish, but, as of today, no elephants or peacocks. Check back. Her writing has won the Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction, the Christopher Award, and the SCBWI-Illinois Laura Crawford Memorial Mentorship, and her essays and poetry have appeared in collections and literary journals including The Bellingham Review, Creative Nonfiction and River Teeth. She has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She teaches calculus and number theory classes at Northwestern University. She is the managing editor for the SCBWI-IL Prairie Wind. And she is the writer-in-residence at St. Gregory the Great, where she has a little office in a big building with a bad internet connection, where she tries to get work done (in theory). In this episode Amy and I discuss: How the relationship between the Zhou brothers inspired her book. What Amy had to do to find the perfect illustrator for her book. Why Amy believes it is important to get the blessing from the real-life figures that inspire your writing.  Plus, her #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes diymfa.com/326

Our guest today is part of a husband and wife duo who are relatively new to the industry but have already reached great success since starting. Joining us is Amy Karol, of Coldwell Banker in St Petersburg, Florida. Amy and her husband Adam, are a full-time husband and wife real estate agent team who go by the A-team.   In this episode, join Amy and I as we discuss just how she and her husband landed in real estate, some advice for running a great business, and pet food donations in memory of a furry friend. Listen in to hear how Amy and Adam Karol, two Long Islanders, managed to make it down to Florida!   Top Takeaways:    Amy Karol's Advice for New Agents: Amy offers a few great pieces of advice to new agents. The most important part of the information she provides is to find mentors who have different strengths that can help you along your real estate journey. It is essential to find people who are willing to help you out and watch you grow. Amy also shares that in the beginning, it's easy to get caught in the growth aspect of learning, attending webinars, and taking classes. Education helps you grow and should always be something to strive for, but you also have to be doing things that will help you to uncover new leads and ultimately generating business.   “You know when you get your license, they don't teach you in that first-class how to start a business or how to actually do anything that you need to do.” – Amy Karol [21:12]   “You're not taught how to start your business. You're not taught how to do real estate. You feel like you have to learn everything. In one respect, that's what's so easy about us being the A-team. Adam is doing some things, and I'm doing other things, so I do have time to focus.” -Amy Karol [26:34]       Episode Highlights:   [00:27] Intro [00:43] Meet Amy Karol – One Half of The A-Team [01:37] Growing up in Long Island [05:20] What Amy misses most about Long Island [06:27] What Amy wanted to be at 15 [07:43] Attending Quinnipiac University [10:45] Working in Behavioral Intervention Services [13:06] An Unlikely Love Story [17:23] Teaching at St. Petersburg College [19:29] Amy and Adam's start in real estate [22:36] Who impacted Amy's growth and continued connections  [24:18] Starting from scratch and fighting the doubts [26:00] Amy's social media influence [28:03] Bindi's Buddies pet food donations [33:02] Not mixing business with donation work [34:58] Amy's advice for new agents [37:06] Connect with Amy Karole [37:35] Closing Thoughts [38:07] Outro     Episode Notes:    Joining us today is Amy Karol, a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker Real Estate, and part of a husband and wife real estate duo called the A-team. In this episode, Amy Karol shares how she got started in real estate with her husband, Adam. Amy recounts her story on how she landed in Tampa, Florida, doing real estate and her work running Bindi's Buddies pet food donations in memory of her late furry friend.   Originally from Long Island, New York, Amy Karol reminisces about some of the things she misses from where she grew up. Friends and family, the beaches, the food, and even the accents. Amy growing up, didn't know what she wanted to be and admits she still really doesn't know. Amy shares that no matter what age she is, she has always wanted to be a writer, never thinking it would be her profession but something she wanted to do someday. Amy also shares her love for animals. She thought briefly about working as a veterinarian or pet psychologist but didn't materialize into what she was expecting it to be today.   Amy ended up attending Quinnipiac University, graduating with a degree in English. Still not knowing what she wanted to be, Amy contemplated the idea of becoming an English professor, so she decided to attend graduate school at Dowling College to receive a Masters in Reading and Special Education. Amy shares why she chose to do launches and how moving to this model has changed her business and herself as a business owner. We also talk about why it’s okay to make mistakes, what she would’ve done differently looking back now and what she plans to do next in her business.  We talk about: How she made the jump to take her therapy business online Why she decided to close her membership The big things she had to wrap her brain around when moving to online work and into the expertise role What tools she uses for creating her online membership Why she does online launches  Why launching is right for her versus having an evergreen model How moving to this model has changed her business and herself as a boss What she would’ve done differently looking back Why it’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them What Amy plans to do next in her business   About Amy Flaherty: My name is Amy Flaherty and I’m a Licensed Psychological Examiner-Independent (LPE-I.) You are probably like what is that?? I get that a lot.  It’s a unique to Arkansas thing. Arkansas licenses people at the masters level through the psychology board to do testing and counseling; with the “I,”I can practice independently (without supervision). There aren’t many of us so it’s likely you haven’t heard of it.   But the most important part you need to know is that I’ve been practicing therapy with kids and adults since 2005 and have been in private practice since 2007.  I’m also a Registered Play Therapist (RPT).  I’ve been a RPT since 2012.  Becoming a RPT was really one of the smartest moves I’ve ever made in my professional life.  While sandtray therapy is my passion, it’s not the only method of therapy I use with my clients. I view change through cognitive-behavioral therapeutic lens but utilize many experiential methods to access all parts of my client’s brain. I’m a constant learner and a self-proclaimed nerd.  I have a passion for neuroscience and neuroplasticity, especially as it relates to sandtray therapy.   Connect with Amy:  Southern Sandtray Institute | Sandtray Therapy Association | True Hope Counseling   Links Mentioned on This Episode: Memberium Tribe Product Launch Formula

How to Prioritize High-Value Activities with Amy Franko, Ep #184

Sales Reinvented

If you learn to define and prioritize high-value activities you will become a more productive sales professional. If you know what activities hold the highest value and act on those over lower-value activities you set yourself up for success. We have finite reserves—you get to choose where you invest your time, energy, motivation and discipline. Amy Franko joins Paul in this episode of Sales Reinvented to chat about how she prioritizes her time to be successful in sales. Amy specializes in working with B2B organizations on sales effectiveness. She is a trainer and consultant, keynote speaker, and author of The Modern Seller.  Outline of This Episode [0:46] What is productivity? [1:50] What makes us unproductive [2:51] Improving productivity [4:13] Attributes of a great salesperson [5:07] Productivity Tools and tips [6:30] Top 3 dos and top 3 don'ts [11:34] Amy’s favorite productivity story Learn to say ‘no’ to prioritize high-value activities Amy points out that salespeople often have a huge list of sales activities to tackle. They’re often given the added burden of administrative tasks that they don’t need on their plates. This automatically lowers your ability to focus on high-value tasks. You must define what activity only you can do so you can delegate—or drop altogether—what isn’t a priority. Where are you going to devote your resources? What can you say no to? How do you become a more productive salesperson? A good sales professional knows the difference between just staying busy versus being productive. They are decisive about where they spend their time. Amy says you need to learn to focus on the big picture. Look at your week and set 3 goals—the high-value activities that will bring you forward progress. Likewise, she does the same thing daily: she prioritizes 3 things to get accomplished. If you start with a list of 10+ activities, you will never get anything done. But if you narrow your focus and knock out the most important things, it can leave room to knock out whatever’s left.  They time-block what’s important to stay organized. She recommends using a timer for each activity. It frees up your mind to focus on the task-at-hand instead of watching the clock. When the alarm goes off, you can re-evaluate where you’re at and either devote more time or move on to the next task.  Amy also loves using agendas to stay on track with meetings. Lastly, she likes to keep it old-school and use a paper list to track what she’s focusing on in a particular day.  Amy’s top 3 Productivity Do’s and Don’ts What are some things you should—or shouldn’t—do to enhance productivity? You must decide that your time is something you want to invest—not spend.  Design an environment that supports your productivity. Amy invested in a co-working space for when she needs to focus and knock out projects. Her home office brought too many distractions, so she came up with a better plan! Block your professional time AND your personal time in a way that works for you.  Don’t say yes to every opportunity, but take time to decide if it’s right for you. Don’t procrastinate on follow-up—do as many of those tasks while they’re fresh in your mind.  Don’t forget to bring an agenda to your meetings with clients. You’ll be far more productive. These are just a few of the things that Amy has found are imperative to her success that is easy for anyone to implement.  What Amy learned launching her book: The Modern Seller Writing a book is a huge undertaking. You aren’t just writing—you’re creating content, dealing with publishing, as well as marketing. Complex projects have a lot of moving parts, and Amy learned some valuable things that she wanted to share: To do something meaningful, she had to make trade-offs on other activities. She had to invest her time wisely to accomplish her dream of publishing a book.  She invested in an accountability partner. Amy hired a book coach and did a weekly call with her. Knowing she had to give her an update kept her on task and moving forward.  Big things are never accomplished alone. You need a support team so that you can focus on what your strengths are and the high-value activities that produce revenue.  Amy is full of useful tips and tricks that she’s learned throughout the years. I wanted to share part of this conversation with Amy here today, because we covered a lot of things that could not only help you launch, but also build your email list year round, lower your ad costs, and a whole lot more. You’ll hear actual strategies that both Amy and I have used in our businesses to make the best use of this critical pre-launch phase, including some beginner and advanced strategies for you to try implementing in your own business.  What Amy and I talk about in this episode isn’t rocket science. It’s really all about focusing on the basics when it comes to running Facebook ads and launching your new course or program. The people who are willing to be patient and that stick with these basic principles are the ones who will be rewarded in the end! Before we start the show, I’ve got something to ask. She started her relationship with accounting in high school when her dad encouraged her to take classes, and the rest is history. But when she received her CPA designation and started working in a bigger firm, she quickly realized that working in a cubicle and doing the same work day in and day out wasn’t filling her up. So, like a true entrepreneur, Amy started looking into starting her own CPA firm. As she started attracting her own clients, she quickly realized that there was a real need in the small business space. When it came to finances, creative entrepreneurs and biz owners were really struggling to understand their finances and basic accounting principles. In fact, traditional accounting “speak” was downright overwhelming to them… so Amy sought to find ways to help. Today, she works with creative entrepreneurs and biz owners all over the US navigate taxes and set up bookkeeping systems so they can get back to the part of the business they love – the creative part. Of course, we talk all about when our listeners might want to hire a CPA and what a CPA even is because we know a lot of you are too afraid to ask that question

Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! My guest today is Amy Eaton of AmyTakesPictures.com Amy is a photographer-turned-educator who teaches makers + Etsy sellers how to DIY their own gorgeous product photos. I was connected to Amy by my team member and right hand woman Laura who also works with Amy, and she kept telling me “You gotta get her on the podcast, she’s awesome!”  And you guys, I’m SO glad I did because Amy had a TON of fantastic advice for you guys to help you grow, and she’s the perfect example of someone who took a service traditionally done one on one that required her time and physical presence - and turned it into a scalable business that doesn’t require her to be there to run. Not only that - my conversation with Amy was another transformational one for me where I had the realization that I’ve been playing it small in my business and that it’s time to make some big changes… More on that later. Today we’re talking about: How Amy took her skills and created an online course to teach photography to non-techie product makers. Amy’s journey from side hustle to self employed, why she then went back to corporate and what ultimately made her go all in and take her photography business full-time. The one thing that’s more important to the success of your business than anything else. What Amy did after her business failed. Exactly how Amy built her audience and her email list. The power in knowing your numbers. Why you should ask yourself what you really want out of your business. Why to avoid focusing on what you offer, and what to focus on instead. How playing small might be holding you back, and how to start playing it big. Amy’s advice for you if you’re struggling to get traction in your side hustle. The one belief Amy had to change about herself to get where she is today. And just one more thing before we dive in - we unfortunately had a really spotty connection for our interview - but our conversation was SO GOOD I didn’t want to stop and reschedule because sometimes, you lose the magic of that first connection, you know what I mean? There is so much actionable and inspiring stuff in this interview that I hope you’ll give me a pass on the audio - I did my best to clean it up for you guys… but shocker, I’m not a professional sound engineer!! Okay, so let’s go ahead and dive into my interview with Amy Eaton of AmyTakesPictures.com My favorite quotes from Amy: “What strategy do you bring that’s unique to you that's going to transform the people you serve?” “You can create the best thing in the world but if nobody knows about it, it doesn’t matter.” “Helping people is important to my life, it feeds my soul.” “Persevere until you have nothing left and then keep going more.” So I mentioned in our intro that my conversation with Amy was another transformational one for me where I had the realization that I’ve been playing it small in my business and that it’s time to make some big changes…  And I realized that it’s finally time for me to press pause on taking one on one web design clients and focus exclusively on my signature programs, the Website Marketing Lab and the Web Designer Academy. I’ve been scared to do it, because the one on one jobs are my security blanket. They’re my steady paycheck.  But my goal from day one has always been to make 100% of my revenue from scalable sources - my courses.  And talking to Amy solidified what I’ve known for a long time… I’m not spending my time on my goal. I’m spending 80% of my time on client work, which brings in 50% of my revenue. I spend 20% of my time on marketing my own business, which brings in 50% of my revenue. Imagine what I can do if I shift how I’m spending my time to my own business? So I did it. I made the decision to stop accepting one on one clients for at least the next 6 months and focus on growing my audience and marketing my courses. It honestly feels like I made the decision to quit my day job again. I’m having all kinds of deja vu over here... But I’ve been playing small for a long time, and thanks to conversations on this show with people like Amy, I’m ready to start playing big. So stay tuned! Amy is hosting a free 5 day challenge to help makers get better product photos in just 5 days from September 23rd - 27th.  Registration for 5 Days To Better Product Photos is now open at www.amytakespictures.com/challenge.    Resources mentioned in this episode: www.amytakespictures.com The Startup Podcast: Pirate Needs Pirate Snap, Sell, Succeed Course Bio: Amy is a photographer and educator with over 10 years of experience in this wild world of chasing light and creating images. Every big talk has the potential to change lives. This is especially true of today's speaker, who prepared a life-changing talk about survival and resilience. She will inspire you with her story of taking her expertise to a deeper level and helping people become more resilient beyond just surviving.   Amy C. O'Neill, MS, LPC has built a career in mental health over two-and-a-half decades, and traveled a personal path that has proven over and over again that resilience is key to truly living healthy, both in mind and body. Resilience enables us to face tragedy and still take the necessary steps to go through. Resilience is mandatory for us to recover when obstacles interfere. And, as Amy can attest, resilience can be harnessed.   After methodically training and successfully completing three Ironman Triathlons, and the prestigious Boston Marathon five times, Amy knows how mental and physical focus can lead to success. Perhaps her biggest life test was being thrust into the role of a Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor. Her testimony understanding the path of the unthinkable has opened up her eyes to a new way of going through adversity. Amy's goal is to share her lived and learned knowledge with others. The survival journey is complicated, and we can not only survive challenges, but also thrive and create a life we love.   We'll explore:   Various ways that Amy is using her speaking platform to impact lives and advocate for survivors. The value of understanding your message fully. The mindset shift to begin owning who you are as a speaker. What Amy learned about herself in the Speakers Who Dare process. The most surprising thing about the process for Amy. Why doing this talk represented a risk for Amy. How Speakers Who Dare has impacted Amy personally and professionally. Her tips for anyone doing a big talk.

Amy believes everyone has a story to tell, and her mission is to inspire women everywhere to feel joy and confidence by infusing creativity, fun, and intention into the everyday.   On today’s episode, Amy shares how she got her start as an entrepreneur and how her business has evolved over time. She gives advice for curating an authentic and organic social media presence, and the best way to approach contracts and collaboration. We also talk about her favorite mediums, how she connects with her audience and how she decides which partnerships and collaborations to say yes to. ON TODAY’S EPISODE: Why Amy enjoys Instagram as a medium Her perspective on vlogging How she keeps her YouTube channel authentic   The importance of separating self-worth from “likes” What Amy did to monetize her Instagram organically How she learned to negotiate contracts Amy’s three criteria for collaboration Legal advice for freelancers and influencers How writing a book helped Amy heal and deal in difficult times A sneak peek at what Amy’s got going on in 2019   KEY TAKE-AWAYS:   “My parents always instilled this value of you can do anything you put your mind to and your heart in, they really had this vision that the American dream was to work for yourself.” - Amy Tan   “I had all these ideas for side hustles, without knowing that that's what they were. I magically somehow ended up turning a lot of hobbies into work. ” - Amy Tan   “It’s so valuable to try different things and you don't actually have to go all in on something. You can dabble.” - Amy Tan   “There's so many things that you can learn and I just think that experimentation is the best way to do so.” - Amy Tan   “I really wanted people to get a feel of what it was like as a small business owner, as a creative entrepreneur who sits in a studio working and have that dialogue and that feeling that you're right alongside me in the studio creating, and on the adventures that I take.” - Amy Tan   “I feel like it's still me being on Instagram. I'm still authentic, I'm still real. I'm still the same person. Even though the content that I share might vary to a certain degree, I just love being able to do that in such a fun format.”  - Amy Tan   “I experimented with different types of videos. Sometimes I would do a tutorial, sometimes I would talk straight to camera, sometimes it would be short, sometimes it'd be longer. I played around and I took the pressure off of myself for making things perfect.” - Amy Tan   “You're trying to be true to yourself and you're not trying to create an image just to appease people.” - Katie Hunt   “Sometimes I actually don't want to post that many pretty things because I don't want people thinking that all I'm focusing on is the pretty aspects and nothing bad is happening in my life. That is so untrue.” - Amy Tan   “Show the type of work you want to be doing and then that'll ultimately attract the same type of people that are interested in it.” - Katie Hunt   “I do love helping people and working with people. But at the same time, I realize that my time is really limited and I can't be spread too thin because I've been there before.” - Amy Tan   “Why are you starting this business to begin with? Who do you want to serve and how you want to make an impact in their lives? Because if you don't have a reason for starting this business, then it's not truly a business, if you're not solving problems.” - Katie Hunt   “I don't have a rate sheet. I don't believe in her rate card. I believe everything is a conversation.” - Amy Tan   “I don't know if you know this, but you can't really tell an entrepreneur what to do.” - Amy Tan CONNECT WITH EMILY MARKS: Website: http://amytangerine.com/ YouTube: http://youtube.com/amytangerine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amytangerine/   JOIN US FOR PROOF TO PRODUCT’S 100th EPISODE! Melissa even moved to Nashville to pursue her dream of singing. [13:20] Melissa was paid really well to be a session singer. She stood at the back and let everyone else take center stage, because she didn’t look the part. [14:52] Amy and her husband had been through a difficult time and her weight and body image was a contributing factor. She would diet and then gain the weight back. [15:23] She had lost weight and was unhappy living a life of restriction, until she discovered binge eating disorder. [16:33] Binge eating disorder when you hide your food choices is a real thing. [17:09] Amy began therapy and gained 100 pounds. Her diet had been so restrictive, and she started eating whatever she wanted. She was actually on 3 medications and one of them caused extreme hunger. [18:35] She had to learn and relearn her hunger cues. [21:27] How restrictive diets can really backfire in the long run. [22:39] Why food was such an emotional issue for Amy. She struggled for years and realize she couldn't fight the battle on her own anymore. She opened up her heart and asked for help. [23:14] She knows it's more than just calories in and calories out. Are you broken inside? Are you taking your life, because you're not enjoying your food? [24:23] Amy has finally realized that her journey is forever. [24:52] Amy feels better when she takes care of her body. She's a better wife, mother, and friend. She is also lost 104 pounds in the last two years. [25:37] God created us to run on full capacity with the physical, emotional, and spiritual. [25:51] Melissa is kicking butt emotionally and spiritually. But we are only as strong as our weakest link. [27:37] We are more than the number on the scale. Amy loves the body kindness movement. [30:20] Amy went back to Weight Watchers but was determined to do it in a healthy way. [31:48] Amy chose Weight Watchers because it was the only program that had worked for her. Restriction in any form is not healthy for her. [32:48] She needed to honor her body in a lifelong way. [33:53] Being a mom is the one area that Amy had the utmost confidence in. [34:12] God had taught Amy to trust in Him in that season. [35:12] Amy's back surgery was a gift of God's grace. In a way it was saying let's just start over. [36:13] It's not about a number. It's about having a body that can move and a body that you can appreciate. [37:43] Amy felt that God told her to stop drinking Diet Coke. [39:07] Melissa finds that when God is leading her, she is more in tune with his voice. [39:55] He is also the God of the small moments. [41:06] Amy is being pushed in a direction that will probably give her more freedom than she has ever had in her life. [43:23] It's not about the weight, it is about the journey and the reliance on a creator that is greater than you. [45:03] What Amy is doing means so much to Melissa. [45:41] It was a true blessing for Amy to share her story. [46:46] The lightning round… [49:20] This was a tough topic for me. It's time to have a conversation with my heart. 068: Trauma-Sensitive Yoga with Amy Hoare   Today's episode opens up a difficult but important issue in the yoga world; the abuse of power.  Shannon has invited Trauma Treatment Specialist Amy Hoare who has recently completed her 300-hour at the Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga program. Amy conducted a survey as part of her final project which focused on hands-on-assists, power dynamics, and abuse in yoga.   Amy began her yoga practice with the intention of working through trauma and decided to become a yoga teacher for her own healing. Amy took her YTT at Karma Teachers in Vancouver, BC, finding the program focused a lot on transformation and healing. Karma Teachers is a not-for-profit community-based program focused on working through trauma.   Amy compiled data for a survey she created about the abuse of power in yoga classes. There were 146 respondents (all of whom have participated in a yoga class), answering a series of questions that would help Amy unearth the overt and subtle abuses of power. Amy notes that there is an inherent power dynamic between the student and teacher- especially in guru settings. Amy shares that her intention was not to shame or cause division but rather to help her identify power imbalances so she could shed light on this for students and teachers.   Shannon and Amy discuss the oftentimes unsettling results. Amy also shares how her training and final project have influenced how she now teaches, defines terms such as complex trauma and trauma-sensitivity training, and gives tips on how you incorporate a trauma-informed perspective into your teaching. 5:45 Amy's yoga journey   8:30 Amy's understanding of trauma as she's grown in experience and education   9:10 Complex Trauma-  a trauma that is repeated (a duration element to it)   Always relational- always happens in relationship and therefore trauma is healed in relationship   10:35 Background on the survey   13:55 Survey question: Have you been physically abused by your yoga teacher (11.6%)   16:15 Survey question: have you been verbally abused by a yoga teacher? (24%)   18:45 Survey question: Have you ever found your yoga teacher value your experience over yours? (68%)   20:10 How the study influenced Amy's teaching   22:25 Amy's choice to back away from public classes and her focus moving forward in the trauma-sensitive yoga field.     25:15 How Amy's language has shifted in and out of yoga classes e.g. asking vs. telling   Question for yoga teachers: Is there a possibility to be more aware of subtleties like language, cueing, and offering hands-on-assists?   31:25 Working within the scope of your practice to help students and the benefit of therapy in conjunction with yoga classes   34:40 Authentic connection and its relation to attachment theory; facilitator is doing the movement with the student and how that can create an authentic connection with a healthy attachment   35:45 How Amy practices non-attachment in her teaching by not being attached to a rigid idea of the form- the point is a shared authentic experience, the practice of making choices and bringing in interoceptive awareness, all of which is based on trauma theory, attachment theory, and neuroscience   39:00 Interoception in trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed classes, normalizing “feeling nothing”, avoid telling students what they need to feel and what the pose should look like   41:40 Functional movement vs. precise poses   43:45 Answers to hands-on-assists questions influenced the biggest change in Amy's teaching:   Have you received a physical assists or adjustments without being asked (65%)   Have you ever felt pressured to receive a yoga assist adjustment even when consent was given (37%)   46:20 Survey question: Have you noticed that certain advanced poses or forms are valued as more spiritual than other forms by your teachers through statements such as “go deeper”? (66%)   This response relates back to attachment to the form or that we need to take people somewhere in particular   47:30 What Amy wants to say to yoga teachers about the results of the survey and moving forward   52:40 Shannon's closing thoughts and key takeaways   Terms   Interoception: Interoception is our ability to “internally-sense”; such as the feelings of hunger, feeling the need for a “bio-break”, feeling our heart racing, or feeling ourselves getting anxious. Interoception can be compromised by negative conditioning. This conditioning can come in the form of verbal cues “only babies cry” resulting in a shame in expressing deep pain with tears. Other verbal cues such as “you're not sick, you're just faking it” resulting in a conditioned distrust of our somatic symptoms. It can also be compromised due to trauma and toxic stress. The good news is through contemplative somatic and cognitive techniques such as meditation, mindfulness, and yoga (contemplative movement) we can improve our connection with what is going on inside ourselves!   From the article: Interoception: Our Felt Sense from Trauma Recover Yoga.Com   Complex Trauma: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD; also known as complex trauma disorder) is a psychological disorder thought to occur as a result of repetitive, prolonged trauma involving sustained abuse or abandonment by a caregiver or other interpersonal relationships with an uneven power dynamic.   Excerpt from: Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Wikipedia Article   Trauma-Sensitive Yoga: “Trauma-sensitive yoga goals are quite contained, evidence-based model for effective treatment for trauma survivors. “ -Amy Hoare   Trauma-sensitive yoga helps them learn to calm their minds and regulate their physical responses and, thus, their emotions. She loves to travel for work and also takes trips with her friends -- this year it's a jaunt in Croatia. One of her projects has even taken her to Minsk, and she loves going back to Paris. Beer, wine, or cocktail? She loves rosés in the afternoon and reds at night, but if it isn't a nightcap, she prefers a cocktail. How Amy got into Interior Design Amy's passion for interior design grew when she was thirteen and drew inspiration from her neighbors, which led her to the classroom on Saturdays for FIT classes and an eventual bachelor's degree. She worked in the industry part-time while in school and full-time when on breaks, and even had a job offer waiting for her when she graduated. Her first ten years were spent in the garment district, and from there she went to a firm that designed hotels before transitioning from boutique and retail to hospitality. What Amy looks for in Interns When hiring interns at Wilson Associates, Amy looks for an energetic go-getter with computer graphic skills like InDesign, Photoshop and CAD along with a passion for design. Amy also looks to make sure that a student has already done an internship when in the hiring process. She also has a few tips for resumes: a professional resume should include some sample projects but it is important to be concise and personable. Also, be sure to write the point of your objective in your resume. With digital portfolios also keep it simple: balance out your portfolio with technical skills and hand sketches, because it is important for her to see your process. And when you do find an internship (maybe even one with The Chaise Lounge!) be sure to find a mentor and ask a lot of questions! We're back! Happy New Year Couragemakers, I can't tell you how happy I am to be back! If you've been listening for a while, you might have noticed that Couragemakers has been on hiatus since October. The end of last year was a hard one, I lost one of Grandmothers and had a health scare (luckily everything is okay). Taking a break felt incredibly scary - but it was a great reminder that the world doesn't end when you need to take time for yourself and there's no shame in needing time for yourself! So, as I mentioned, Couragemakers is back to its usual Monday schedule! I have fantastic interviews lined up which I know you're going to love, and I couldn't be happier to start the new year off with this wonderful conversation with Amy Parker! Amy is an in-house copywriter and general creative who loves making a mess, enjoys documenting her life (but not necessarily publishing it!), decorating things with washi and stickers, and generally finding little ways to make the world more joyful. She is the woman behind HappyPostBox and shares memory-keeping and planner-related posts on Instagram  and sells printable planner stickers in her Easy shop. For the last year she's been living by her first ever ‘word of the year' - ‘joy' - and would absolutely encourage anyone else to give it a try, too. In this episode, Amy shares all about choosing her word for the year, what she has learned during the year and some really helpful practical tips to set your own intentions for your year We're really dive into starting your year without pressure, how to use your creativity to  record life without getting lost in the act of recording your life, perfectionism and liberating our inner people pleaser and treating your future self as a different person. One of the things I love the most about this episode, apart from the fact that both of our cheeks were aching from laughing and smiling during our conversation, is Amy's flexible approach to using a word to guide your year. I love how she sees it as a lens rather than something which you can use to create a rigid plan. I really admire Amy's honesty in sharing the bumps in the road of her Year Of Joy are it's really refreshing to see that her journey wasn't linear, and that you don't have to do it right, or in a certain way. I hope this episode helps take the pressure off and helps you to add more joy to your own life. Here's to a Hopeful, Inspired and Creative New Year! And remember, if you're listening to this episode further along the year, you can start your own Word of The Year journey any time! Now, onto the show!     About Amy Amy is an in-house copywriter and general creative, who enjoys documenting her life (but not necessarily publishing it!), decorating things with washi and stickers, and generally finding little ways to make the world more joyful. On episode 12 of 'Your Next Chapter' I have Amy Elderkin on as my guest. Who is Amy? Amy is the co-founder of Popcorn Media. Popcorn specializes in social media marketing, along with providing PR and traditional marketing services. Amy co-founded Popcorn with her two business partners five years ago. Why did I bring Amy onto the show? Amy is the embodiment of an individual who has been able to create a lifestyle true to her nature by taking on challenging aspects of her life. As an example, she didn’t go to school for marketing, but has been able to build a successful social media marketing company through listening to past experiences and taking deliberate action. In the podcast Amy explains that she found her path by following little bits of happiness. She went through several jobs and eventually landed in the hospitality industry doing sales and marketing. The job required her to use social media to promote a hotel and she soon found herself really enjoying Twitter as a platform. Amy started building her own Twitter platform and soon found herself exploring events and meeting new people. She ran a campaign called "Tweet to Eat" where for 2 weeks she sourced all her food and meals through the generous donations of Vancouverites over Twitter. She became an influencer on Twitter in Vancouver and realized if she could do this for herself, she could do this for businesses. She would eventually meet her future business partners through Twitter and they began to collaborate on what is now Popcorn Media. Amy said she choose marketing because it was what she enjoyed from her last job. By following little bits of joy and taking on things that challenged her growth, she was able to build a business and career she enjoys. Amy’s Mindset Try things that scare you – The things that Amy likes to says yes to are the things that scare her. An interesting point that surfaced during the podcast is that at one point, Amy read that men are much more likely to say yes to opportunities in jobs that they aren’t qualified to do than women; thus they get more opportunities. Amy decided that was not going to be the case for her, “I say yes to things I probably shouldn’t say yes to.” When we say yes to the things that scare us we step into an opportunity for growth. Balance – There is no such thing as balance in Amy’s world. She says there is always something out of balance in her life and it’s a constant juggling act. There are times where she will be a complete introvert staying in and other times where things are going at 100 miles an hour. You learn to balance the variety in each day. Her life motto – Interesting life; interesting marketing. Amy’s core belief is that if she lives an interesting life that will carry over into her career (this is a perfect example of flow). Amy actively embraces her personal life which allows for her career and personal life tohave a blurry zone in the middle. The more guests I interview, the more I recognize that blurring the two areas between your career and personal life is a repeating pattern among my guests. We discussed numerous other avenues on the podcast which you can listen to and hear more about: When Amy knows she needs to make a change or pivot in her life (3:23)Life motto - Interesting life; interesting marketing (9:07)How to improve your business and personal social media campaigns (17:57)The most important thing to do on social media (and it’s not what you would expect) (22:40)The best platform to practice your social media listening skills (27:28)Meeting new people is in your DNA (38:53)The questions Amy asks herself when making life decisions (43:56)Why you should try things that scare you (45:07)What Amy tells her employees when they say they can’t do something (53:40)  “I’m making this choice for the rest of my life. Which is not true. Your life changes all the time but you don't know that at 21... It’s about passion and not knowing what you’re doing. Amy Medling is a Certified PCOS Health Coach who has helped thousands of women overcome their PCOS symptoms and restore their fertility naturally through the programs she has developed. After receiving her own diagnosis of PCOS she embarked on her own journey to health by doing her own research and trying many different approaches. She was able to heal herself and regain her fertility naturally and that inspired her to do the same for other women also struggling with PCOS symptoms. In today's show, Amy and I talk about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in detail. We talk about what it is, what symptoms are required for an "official diagnosis", and what are some of the most common but less known symptoms of PCOS. We discuss why many women may have PCOS symptoms but don't necessarily make the connection to a PCOS diagnosis. Amy discusses in detail what tests you should be requesting from your doctor if you think you may have PCOS, and we talk about how fertility awareness cycle charting can help you identify it early. Amy also talks about what steps you can take to heal your PCOS naturally. If you've ever had questions about PCOS you'll learn a lot from this episode!
