Episode: 1622 Fingerprints, crime detection, and identification.  Today, I ask, "Who are you?"

When we first began covering the University of Idaho murders in November 2022, the case was still almost completely undefined. Four students — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin — had been found dead inside an off-campus home on King Road in Moscow after police responded to a report of an unconscious person. Authorities were treating the deaths as homicides, but there was no suspect in custody and virtually every major question remained unanswered. Moscow Mayor Art Bettge said investigators had not settled on a motive and suggested possibilities ranging from a crime of passion to a burglary or robbery gone wrong. At that point, even the basic narrative of what had happened inside the house was still taking shape, while police searched the property, collected evidence and tried to reassure a shaken university community that there did not appear to be an ongoing threat.That was the environment in which our coverage of the case began: before Bryan Kohberger's name entered the public conversation, before the white Hyundai Elantra became a centerpiece of the investigation, before the DNA evidence, cellphone records, surviving-roommate accounts and enormous volume of court litigation that would eventually define the case. In those first reports, the story was simply an inexplicable quadruple homicide involving four young people who had been together with friends only hours before their deaths. The early speculation about a burglary gone wrong or a crime of passion demonstrated just how little was actually known and how dramatically the understanding of the case would evolve in the weeks and years that followed. Day one of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on July 6, 2026, largely centered on prosecutors beginning to construct a timeline of Charlie Kirk's killing at Utah Valley University and establishing the authenticity of the surveillance footage and investigative records they intended to use against Robinson. Former UVU police officer Chris Bagley described the moment the gunshot rang out during Kirk's September 10, 2025 event and the chaos that followed, while Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the enormous video-review effort undertaken after the shooting. Hull testified that investigators examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and ultimately tracked a person they believed was Robinson moving around the UVU campus at several different points that day. Prosecutors introduced surveillance recordings from multiple locations as they attempted to connect the person seen approaching the campus, moving toward the area surrounding the Losee Center, and later leaving the area to Robinson. Three separate videos depicting Kirk being shot were admitted, although Judge Tony Graf determined that their graphic nature warranted restricting their display to the attorneys' and judge's monitors rather than broadcasting them throughout the courtroom. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents left the courtroom while the videos were reviewed. Prosecutors also introduced Kirk's autopsy report through Hull, which listed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck and the manner of death as homicideThe defense spent much of the first day attacking the manner in which the prosecution was getting its evidence into the record rather than attempting to disprove the entire prosecution theory at that stage. Kathryn Nester and Robinson's attorneys repeatedly raised hearsay, foundation and authentication objections, arguing that investigators were being permitted to introduce reports, statements and records created by other people without those individuals appearing personally to testify. Judge Graf overruled most of those objections, reflecting the substantially lower evidentiary threshold governing a Utah preliminary hearing, whose purpose was only to determine whether probable cause existed to send Robinson to trial rather than whether prosecutors could prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. One significant exception involved an edited compilation of surveillance footage, which Graf declined to admit in that form and required prosecutors to replace with the underlying unedited material. Hull's testimony also revealed the scope of the prosecution's surveillance theory: investigators claimed Robinson had appeared on or around the UVU campus multiple times on September 10 and that they were attempting to stitch those appearances together into a continuous identification of the alleged shooter. By the end of day one, prosecutors had established the killing itself, the medical cause of Kirk's death, the existence and authenticity of substantial video evidence and the beginnings of their effort to identify Robinson as the person captured in that footage. They had not yet presented many of the pieces expected to become more consequential later in the hearing, including the rifle and DNA evidence, Robinson's alleged communications and admissions, and testimony concerning his roommate Lance Twiggs.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Invented for it are the detective, his office, the gravedigger, the specific conversations, and the telephone call, and every name of a person or a place has been changed. The case underneath it is real.On the night of Thursday, June 24th, 1948, seventeen-year-old Mary Jane Reed, a switchboard operator, went on a first date with Stanley Skridla, a twenty-eight-year-old Navy veteran and telephone lineman from Rockford. They drank in taverns in Oregon, Illinois, a town on the Rock River in Ogle County, and the last place anyone could name was the Stenhouse, out on Route 2 at the south edge of town. They left around eleven-thirty. Skridla was found the next morning in the ditch along County Farm Road, shot with a .32. Mary Jane was found five days later along Silica Road, now called Devil's Backbone Road, shot once through the head, her slacks off her and her mother's wedding ring still on her hand. Roughly fifty people were questioned within a week. Nobody was ever charged, and the case was off the front pages by autumn.The casings, the photographs and the investigation reports all disappeared in the decades that followed. On November 15th, 1999 – Mary Jane's birthday – an untraceable floral arrangement addressed to her arrived at the old Stenhouse, by then the Road House, on a day the bar was closed. The owner, Mike Arians, had just been elected mayor, and the case has occupied him ever since. Her brother Warren Reed had her exhumed on August 23rd, 2005. Inside the burial vault, beside the casket, investigators found a dress and slip wrapped in newspapers dated June 25th, 1948 – four days before anyone found her. In 2007, forensic anthropologist Linda Klepinger examined the remains released to the family and reported that the skull and one vertebra had come from a different person. The DNA test that would settle it has never been run. Skridla was exhumed in 2015 on Arians's theory that Mary Jane's skull had been hidden in his coffin; it held one man and nothing else, though two .32 slugs came out of the ground with him and neither matched the gun Arians submitted.Warren Reed died on December 23rd, 2023, at eighty-one, without ever learning whose skull was in his sister's grave. In January 2023, former NYPD inspector Paul Mauro argued that five pieces of evidence outlined in the probable cause affidavit had already created a potentially powerful circumstantial case against Bryan Kohberger. At the center was DNA recovered from the snap of a Ka-Bar-style knife sheath found beside Madison Mogen's body, which investigators initially connected to Kohberger through a familial comparison involving his father. Mauro also pointed to surveillance footage of a white Hyundai Elantra traveling near the King Road residence before and after the murders, noting that the vehicle's movements appeared to correspond with Kohberger's cellphone activity. Phone records showed Kohberger's device had connected to cell towers serving the area around the victims' home on multiple occasions before the killings, while the phone stopped reporting to the network during the critical period surrounding the murders and reconnected afterward as it traveled south of Moscow and eventually back toward Pullman. Taken together, Mauro argued that the DNA, car footage and cellphone evidence reinforced one another and would have been difficult for the defense to explain away independently.Mauro also highlighted surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen's description of the masked man she saw leaving the house, saying her account of a tall, athletically built man with bushy eyebrows was broadly consistent with Kohberger's appearance. He noted that investigators had also discovered a latent shoeprint along the route Mortensen said the intruder had taken, creating another piece of evidence prosecutors could potentially attempt to connect to Kohberger. Finally, Mauro pointed to Kohberger's earlier criminology research, particularly a Reddit survey in which he had asked people who committed crimes about how they selected victims, prepared for offenses, approached targets and avoided detection. August 17, 1992. Waukegan, Illinois. While babysitting two children, 11-year old Holly Staker is sexually assaulted and brutally murdered inside their apartment. Two months later, a suspect named Juan Rivera is brought in for questioning and confesses to the murder after four straight days of interrogation. He is subsequently convicted and receives a life sentence, but no physical evidence links Rivera to the crime and the veracity of his confession is called into question. At a recent motions hearing for Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the University of Idaho student murders, both sides clashed over critical pieces of evidence and the defense's attempts to challenge the prosecution's case. The judge denied several of the defense's motions, including a bid to dismiss the indictment due to grand jury irregularities. Kohberger's team had argued that the grand jury was misled by an unreliable FBI genetic genealogy analysis and that it violated proper legal standards, but the court found the indictment sufficient to move forward. The defense also tried to suppress certain pieces of evidence, such as cell tower data and body cam footage, claiming they were improperly obtained or prejudicial—efforts that mostly failed.However, not everything went the prosecution's way. The judge did grant the defense more time to scrutinize some of the state's key evidence, particularly DNA and cellphone data that tie Kohberger to the crime scene. These materials were initially withheld or delayed, and the court acknowledged the defense's right to fully analyze them. The ruling opens the door for further challenges to the state's forensic evidence in the future. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Kunal Rai from MD Anderson Cancer Center about his work on active DNA demethylation and its role in cancer progression. A major part of the conversation covers his postdoctoral work on active DNA demethylation. He describes how he identified an AID-MBD4-based mechanism, later supported by GAD45, and how this work showed a role for DNA demethylation in early neuronal differentiation and in colon cancer initiation. We then discuss his move into his own lab and his work on melanoma progression. He explains how he used broad epigenomic profiling, chromatin state analysis, and 3D chromatin methods to study enhancers and chromatin organization, and how these approaches helped reveal changes linked to cancer progression. Another topic is his work on epigenetic regulators such as RNF2 and KMT2D. He describes findings on polycomb and trithorax-related factors, including tumor-suppressive roles for KMT2D in melanoma and lung cancer, and how KMT2D loss affects cell phenotype and metabolism. Could allowing patients to choose their own appointment times help reduce missed visits and shorten NHS waiting lists? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I speak with Alison MacDonald, European Lead and Senior Vice President at Nordic Global. Alison brings an unusual combination of clinical and technology experience as a registered nurse who moved into digital health over 15 years ago. Her career began in community nursing, where she was asked to lead an electronic health record project because colleagues thought she was good with computers. What initially appeared to be a simple exercise in converting paper forms into digital records encouraged her to question whether healthcare could redesign the process rather than copy it onto a screen. We discuss Nordic's work with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on patient self-scheduling and automated earlier appointment offers. Before the program, missed outpatient appointments were removing valuable clinical capacity while administrative teams spent time calling patients and rearranging bookings. Cambridge introduced self-scheduling through Epic MyChart, allowing patients to select appointment times through the patient portal. Alison says the DNA rate fell from 5% to 2.2% during the program. According to the supplied results, over 20,000 patients successfully scheduled their own appointments and over 3,000 accepted offers to attend earlier when cancellations created availability. Patients moved appointments forward by an average of 16 days. Forty percent of accepted earlier appointments occurred within seven days of the offer, while 7% took place on the same or following day. Administrative teams also saved an estimated ten minutes for every self-booked appointment. Alison explains why patient control can improve attendance. People can choose times that work around employment, caring responsibilities, travel, and family life instead of receiving a fixed appointment through a letter or telephone call. Patients can also cancel or reschedule without waiting for somebody to answer the phone. The operational lesson goes beyond appointment booking. Healthcare systems may be able to recover existing capacity by examining missed appointments, theater scheduling, waiting list processes, pre-visit questionnaires, and patient communications before concluding that every problem requires additional staff or facilities. We also discuss where AI is producing practical results in healthcare. Alison points to medical imaging, emergency department triage, waiting list management, clinical documentation, and workforce deployment. She warns against discussing AI as one generic solution because each application requires a defined use case, suitable data, workable processes, governance, and staff adoption. Ambient clinical documentation offers one example. An AI scribe can record a consultation, prepare a structured note, and pass it to the clinician for review and correction. Alison cites an NHS evaluation reporting a 23.5% increase in direct patient interaction time and an 8.2% reduction in appointment length. Interoperability remains another major challenge. Healthcare journeys cross hospitals, primary care, community services, and specialist providers that may use different systems or a mixture of electronic and paper records. Even basic differences, such as one organization measuring pain on a five-point scale and another using ten points, can prevent reliable comparison. Alison recommends agreeing on common data standards, defining the minimum patient information required during care transitions, including interoperability requirements in procurement, and avoiding bespoke integrations that make future information sharing harder. Digital access also requires balance. Online services can improve convenience, but healthcare providers must retain appropriate alternatives for patients who lack digital skills, connectivity, confidence, or access. The State opposed Bryan Kohberger's effort to suppress evidence connected to investigative genetic genealogy, arguing that the IGG process had functioned only as an investigative lead and had not produced the DNA evidence prosecutors ultimately intended to use against him at trial. Prosecutors maintained that the genealogy work pointed investigators toward Kohberger, but that law enforcement then independently collected trash from his family's Pennsylvania home and later obtained a direct buccal swab after his arrest. According to the State, those later samples established the evidentiary comparison to the male DNA recovered from the knife sheath. Because prosecutors were not planning to introduce the family-tree research, genealogy database information or the identities of genetic relatives as proof of guilt, they argued that Kohberger was trying to suppress an investigative technique rather than evidence that would actually be presented to the jury.The State also rejected the defense argument that Kohberger's constitutional rights had been violated by investigators searching genetic genealogy databases. Prosecutors argued that Kohberger had no reasonable expectation of privacy in DNA information voluntarily uploaded by distant relatives to third-party genealogy services and therefore lacked standing to challenge those searches on their behalf. They further maintained that even if the court found some problem with the IGG investigation, suppression still would not automatically follow because investigators had developed additional evidence linking Kohberger to the crime and ultimately obtained his own DNA through lawful means. The prosecution's position was essentially that IGG helped generate a name, not courtroom evidence, and that the defense was attempting to transform a genealogical lead into a Fourth Amendment violation capable of excluding the later DNA comparison.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Bryan Kohberger's defense filed its third motion to compel discovery in June 2023, arguing that prosecutors had still not turned over important material connected primarily to the DNA investigation. The defense sought records concerning every DNA profile developed during the investigation, not just the male DNA recovered from the snap of the knife sheath. That included information about profiles uploaded into state and national DNA databases, any database hits generated during those searches, laboratory manuals governing the use of those systems, communications between laboratory personnel and investigators, records involving outsourced DNA testing, unexpected laboratory results and corrective actions. Kohberger's attorneys argued that simply receiving the final laboratory conclusions was not enough. They wanted the underlying material necessary for their own experts to evaluate how the testing had been conducted, whether alternative DNA profiles had been identified and whether anything occurring during the laboratory process could undermine or qualify the State's conclusions.The most consequential portion of the motion concerned investigative genetic genealogy, the process investigators used after the sheath DNA failed to produce a traditional CODIS identification. Kohberger's attorneys demanded the genealogy records behind the investigation, including DNA data uploaded to genealogy services, search results, family trees, communications, additional samples collected during the genealogy investigation and information identifying genetic relatives who had appeared as potential matches. The defense maintained that it needed this material to examine the reliability and legality of the process that ultimately helped investigators focus on Kohberger, while prosecutors sought a protective order limiting disclosure of some of the genealogy information because it involved private individuals who had never been suspects. The dispute eventually required extensive briefing, expert declarations and a hearing before Judge John Judge, who ultimately ordered prosecutors to submit certain IGG materials to the court for an in camera review. Day one of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing on July 6, 2026, largely centered on prosecutors beginning to construct a timeline of Charlie Kirk's killing at Utah Valley University and establishing the authenticity of the surveillance footage and investigative records they intended to use against Robinson. Former UVU police officer Chris Bagley described the moment the gunshot rang out during Kirk's September 10, 2025 event and the chaos that followed, while Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull walked the court through the enormous video-review effort undertaken after the shooting. Hull testified that investigators examined hundreds of hours of surveillance footage and ultimately tracked a person they believed was Robinson moving around the UVU campus at several different points that day. Prosecutors introduced surveillance recordings from multiple locations as they attempted to connect the person seen approaching the campus, moving toward the area surrounding the Losee Center, and later leaving the area to Robinson. Three separate videos depicting Kirk being shot were admitted, although Judge Tony Graf determined that their graphic nature warranted restricting their display to the attorneys' and judge's monitors rather than broadcasting them throughout the courtroom. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents left the courtroom while the videos were reviewed. Prosecutors also introduced Kirk's autopsy report through Hull, which listed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck and the manner of death as homicideThe defense spent much of the first day attacking the manner in which the prosecution was getting its evidence into the record rather than attempting to disprove the entire prosecution theory at that stage. Kathryn Nester and Robinson's attorneys repeatedly raised hearsay, foundation and authentication objections, arguing that investigators were being permitted to introduce reports, statements and records created by other people without those individuals appearing personally to testify. Judge Graf overruled most of those objections, reflecting the substantially lower evidentiary threshold governing a Utah preliminary hearing, whose purpose was only to determine whether probable cause existed to send Robinson to trial rather than whether prosecutors could prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. One significant exception involved an edited compilation of surveillance footage, which Graf declined to admit in that form and required prosecutors to replace with the underlying unedited material. Hull's testimony also revealed the scope of the prosecution's surveillance theory: investigators claimed Robinson had appeared on or around the UVU campus multiple times on September 10 and that they were attempting to stitch those appearances together into a continuous identification of the alleged shooter. By the end of day one, prosecutors had established the killing itself, the medical cause of Kirk's death, the existence and authenticity of substantial video evidence and the beginnings of their effort to identify Robinson as the person captured in that footage. Did anyone actually investigate Patrick Clancy? That question runs under half the comments on this channel, and the Lindsay Clancy trial already answered it under oath.State Police Det. Sgt. Andrew Chiachio testified that he mapped the route Patrick drove the night of Jan. 24, 2023, pulled surveillance from the Kingston CVS and the ThreeV restaurant, and interviewed witnesses including Lindsay's mother. The CVS footage shows Patrick walking in at 5:32 p.m. The restaurant footage shows him picking up the order at 5:54. A Cellebrite expert testified Lindsay's phone placed a 14-second call to Patrick between those two clips. He was two miles away with a receipt.Then there's the New Yorker theory: that Patrick left the country in February 2023 and that proves something. The magazine did report solo trips to Latin America and Europe before he sold the Duxbury house. No February date appears in that reporting that I can find. He wasn't a suspect, he wasn't charged, and he came back to Massachusetts to testify for the prosecution for two days.Another commenter asks a fair question: if Lindsay was psychotic, can her admission even be trusted? Her admission isn't one statement. When 21-year-old aspiring model Juliana Redding was found strangled in her Santa Monica apartment, police uncovered a bizarre crime scene: a lit candle left in a gas-filled room intended to trigger a lethal explosion. They also have their current go-to products – including the Korean sunscreen with niacinamide meaning it doesn't sting the eyes, the flat brushes that actually push product INTO your skin, and the cloudy serum with salmon egg DNA that brightens and rejuvenates. They also tackle the ridiculous TikTok Shop trends going around – people stitching videos claiming "he doesn't get Botox, he uses this!"- and the bizarre toothpaste trend where people put their finger in the back of their mouth to determine if they need mouthwash. Episode 433: On August 16, 1995, Avis Ottey came home to her townhouse in Scarborough, Ontario, expecting to find her daughters packing for the future. Instead, she found nineteen-year-old Marsha Ottey and sixteen-year-old Tamara "Tami" Ottey murdered in the basement. Marsha was just two days away from leaving for Arkansas State University on an athletic scholarship she had worked years to earn. She had also confided something chilling to her mother while packing her bags: "If anything should happen to me, it's Rohan." What followed was a seven-month investigation that stretched beyond the murders of the Ottey sisters. Two unsolved sexual assaults, a seemingly unrelated killing at a Toronto subway station, that of TTC employee Dimitrija Trajceski, DNA evidence, and the largest manhunt in Toronto Police history ultimately exposed the truth behind a crime driven by obsession, control, and extraordinary violence.
