Laci and Matt fall into the world of Christian Grey, a mysterious and mercurial billionaire (age: 27) who enjoys flying his helicopter and tickling womens' tummies.  First, the show explores author E.L. James and how her Twilight fan fiction evolved into the worldwide bestselling Fifty Shades trilogy. Then, a cultural industry grows like a weed, trying to figure out what exactly it says about our society that we love these books, ya know?  The 2010s is also when fandom completely seizes control of the production of its favorite intellectual properties. Author E.L. James was not happy with how far the first Fifty Shades film deviated from her book, and she kept a much tighter leash on the subsequent entries. But what exactly was she unhappy with? Is Fifty Shades of Grey conservative or progressive, sex-positive or prudish, feminist or retrograde, pro-BDSM or anti-BDSM? The answer, of course, is yes.  I'll bet you five you're not alive if this movie about transactional law doesn't turn you on. Plus, we answer a sex advice question!  Next week (April 10, 2026): SEX MONTH continues with the '90s sex comedy classic Can't Hardly Wait (1998)!   Time stamps: 00:05:06 — History segment: Author E.L. James writes a Twilight fan fiction that then gets turned into Fifty Shades of Grey; the novel becomes a blockbuster, leading to huge movies and a huge cultural industry; the production of the movie is difficult; Dakota Johnson still confuses us; the #notmychristian backlash to Jamie Dornan's casting; director Sam Taylor-Johnson later expresses regret that she did the movie, claims E.L. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   From the Probabilities Archive: E. Hoffman Price, Fantasy & Science Fiction Pulp Writer E. Hoffman Price (1898-1988), fantasy and science fiction author who published in various pulp magazines from the 1920s into the 1950s, in conversation with Probabiliaties hosts Richard Wolinsky, Richard A. Lupoff and Lawrence Davidson, recorded in early 1979 at Price's home in Redwood City, California. E. Hoffman Price, who was born 1898 and died shortly before his 90th birthday in 1988, wrote fantasy and science fiction stories for the pulp magazines of the first half of the twentieth century, along with some non-fiction. Mostly forgotten today, though several of his stories are available in small press editions, his claim to fame is a single collaboration with the great horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, titled “Through the Gates of the Silver Key,” a sequel to Lovecraft's story, “The Silver Key.” A contributor to Weird Tales, he was also friends with two other writers from the magazine, Seabury Quinn and Clark Ashton Smith, as well as with the longtime editor of Weird Tales, Farnsworth Wright. He also knew Otis Adelbert Kline, famous in his day for writing imitations of Edgar Rice Burroughs. In the interview, Price talks about his writing career, his friendships with H.P. Lovecraft, horror writer Seabury Quinn, adventure writer Otis Adelbert Kline, and horror master Clark Ashton Smith. The Probabilities radio show first went on the air on KPFA in 1977. Within a year, my co-host Lawrence Davidson was on the trail for old pulp writers and editors, egged on by science fiction and fantasy author Richard A. Lupoff, who officially joined the show a couple of years later. This interview, following on the heels of interviews with pulp science fiction author Stanton A. Coblentz and editor Charles Hornig, was conducted at Price's house in Redwood City, California, most likely in the spring of 1979. Accompanying Dick, Lawrence and myself were Dick's wife Pat Lupoff and science fiction fanzine editor Jim Purviance. Over two hours were recorded on multiple tapes, and parts of the transcription can be found in the book Space Ships Ray Guns Martian Octopods: Interviews with Science Fiction Legends. The interview was digitized and then remastered using AI technology first, and then edited for clarity and coherence. Some outtakes exist which I can forward by email via richard@kpfa.org. The unpublished memoir Price discusses in the interview, Book of the Dead: Friends of Yesteryear, Fictioneers and Others was eventually published posthumously, in 2001. The interview opens with a question by Richard A. Lupoff. Several collections of stories by E. Hoffman Price were published in 2017 by Wildside Press, and are available both digitally and in print. The interview was digitized, remastered and edited in March 2026. This interview was first heard in a very truncated version in 1979 and has not been aired until now. The complete 68-minute interview can be heard here.   Rob Nillson: Award-Winning Independent Film-maker Rob Nillson is a Bay Area based maverick filmmaker. The winner of the Camera d'Or at Cannes in 1979 for Northern Lights and the Grand Prize at Sundance for Heat and Sunlight in 1988, he continues to make independently distributed films. This episode deals with some mature topics. Listener discretion is advised.  This week, we're bringing you the second half of our discussion with author E.A. (Elizabeth) Hanks about her new book, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road. Elizabeth undertook her journey along the iconic Interstate 10 transect to better understand herself and the nation we inhabit—and her experience is a perfect subject for a Ten Across conversation.  In part two, Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Elizabeth pick up where they left off at the end of the first installment, crossing from Texas into Louisiana on her way to her favorite stop of all—New Orleans. Tracing the length of the Gulf Coast to her destination in Florida, they explore what this diverse set of places revealed along the way about family, country, and culture.  Relevant Ten Across Conversations podcast episodes and other links:  A Road Trip Along Interstate 10 with Author E.A. Earlier this year, E.A. Hanks—also known as Elizabeth—made her literary debut The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road. Considering its framing, it is no surprise that the book was recommended to Ten Across by many. The 10 documents Elizabeth's re-creation of a fraught childhood road trip taken with her mother in 1996, traveling Interstate 10 from end to end. In retracing her mother's path, she reflects on the diverse nature of the region itself and its influence on events both large and small.  What results is, in significant part, a series of provocative questions about identity—personal, political, and place-based. For example, what makes Texas and California so different, and at the same time so equally vivid in the American imagination? Why do people around the world recognize so much of this singular transect? Is New Orleans the American city? How long can Phoenix exist as it has? How do we define a border? Finally, and most importantly, how do such places inform our future—as individuals and as a nation?  In this special two-part interview, Elizabeth Hanks and Ten Across founder Duke Reiter attempt to answer all the above and find many new questions and revelations along the way. Keep an eye out for part two, which will be released wherever you get your podcasts on July 24.  Relevant Ten Across Conversations podcasts:  “Addressing Historical Inequities in Our National Infrastructure, Then and Now”  “Asking the Right Question: What Texas and Arizona Can Tell Us About the Country”  “Why Phoenix is the ‘Most American City' with George Packer”  Listen to “The 10” on Spotify, or other audiobook servicesCredits:Host: Duke ReiterProducer and editor: Taylor GriffithMusic by: American Legion  Research and support provided by: Kate Carefoot, Rae Ulrich and Sabine ButlerAbout our guest:E.A. He is also a Christian, husband and father of three, but to keep the lights on he draws house plans during the day. He is from Plymouth, Massachusetts but currently resides in Central Florida, the setting for his first book. His writings are inspired by his Christian faith and growing up with Star Wars, Marvel and DC. He is now starting his own superhero universe to give an alternative to the mainstream ones that have been injected with politics and toxic secular values. E.H. shares his journey of creating a superhero universe that offers a family-friendly alternative to mainstream franchises. In his new book, Stop the Road:  Stories from the Trenches of Baltimore's Road Wars, retired city planner E. Evans Paull tells the story of transportation plans that were overtly racist, and disastrously short-sighted. Had it not been for the tenacious efforts of neighborhood activists, some of Baltimore's most cherished and beloved historic neighborhoods would be very different places today. Those activists saved places like Fells Point, the Inner Harbor and Canton. Other, mostly Black neighborhoods didn't survive the onslaught of highways intended to accommodate white suburbanites. Places like Rosemont on the West Side were destroyed. More than 1,500 residents were displaced. Dozens of businesses, even a school were eliminated in the service of a stretch of highway that was begun, but eventually halted after years of organized opposition. The stories of the infamous Highway to Nowhere and the planned East-West Expressway are chronicled in Stop the Road.  Author E. Evans Paull joins Tom today in Studio A…  Klaus Philipsen, an urban planner, community activist and president of the Baltimore architectural firm ArchPlan, Inc., is the author of Baltimore: Reinventing an Industrial Legacy City. EPISODE 52 - Author E.A. Jackson, pen name of Ely Jackson, is a Greek-Australian actress best known for her work in The Grand Unified Theory, The Switch, Alone on Christmas, and The Dragon Prince on Netflix. Jackson is also trained in mounted combat, archery, firearms, and swordplay, studied musical theatre in university, dance for eight years, and singing for five in addition to her work in film and television.E.A. Jackson's first book entitled Snake of the Nile was released on May 31, 2022. In this first book of the Aegean Series, many pieces are set in motion, deadly secrets are revealed, empires are shaken, and lustful, power-hungry men nurture the viper sleeping in Cleopatra's heart, a secret known only to herself and Akela, with history-shaking consequences still to come.I have three books planned for The Aegean Series but there is also a fourth book planned as sort of a spin-off you could say, about a certain Amazon character in The Aegean Series, who I felt warranted her own story that we don't get to witness in the series. I've always wanted to play an Amazon, my family has always believed that the tribes of warrior women existed and were in fact wiped out by larger, male-led armies like Julius Caesar's. To play a character that has been so much a part of my culture would be truly a dream. I've been weapons training for years now and learned to shoot an arrow at a target while on a moving horse, so getting to go through the physical training that one does when preparing for a role like that is a career dream of mine. Author Website:    https://www.eajacksonauthor.com/___Affiliate book link: Snake of the Nilehttps://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast presented by True Media Solutionshttps://truemediasolutions.ca/Join us and connect with guests and with listeners!See you there! The Next Chapter Community: A Place for our Guests and Listeners

To justify the move, not that it needed justifying, Joylynn states, “Sometimes you have to downsize your lifestyle to supersize your business.”“My journey wasn't my journey,” Joylynn states. “My years as an author, literary agent, and editor in the literary industry had nothing to do with me, but it had everything to do with God's will for me and His people who I will serve.” to weigh in on our topic call 646-668-8485 press 1 to be live on the air.
