Leo Goldsmith (he/him) is one of the co-authors of Queer and Present Danger: Understanding the Disparate Impacts of Disasters on LGBTQ+ Communities. Together with Dr. Michael Mendez, Assistant Professor of Environmental Planning and Policy at the University of California, Irvine Vanessa Raditz from Out in Sustainability who is a PhD student at the University of Georgia, they researched the unique vulnerabilities of this community in disaster relief; the myth of gay affluence; how faith-based groups have a history of discriminatory practices in disaster relief; how cohesive is the LGBTQ community and how race is a problem even in LGBTQ groups. Leo also provides practical ways community members and leaders can build stronger, more resilient LGBTQ+ communities that can bounce back from extreme weather events. Nokwanda Maseko (she/her/they) is a South African economist who identifies as a Queer Black person. As senior economist at Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies, she has written position papers about what a just transition can look like, especially for women and the large sector of the Black South African population who because of unemployment and informal employment are not often part of the conversations around just transition. In this conversation, Jacob and Scott talk about Scott's experience with the current New Mexico wildfires and holding space for beauty within tragedy and heartbreak. The friends share their views on abortion and the cognitive dissonance we can all feel when discussing our convictions regarding controversial topics. How can we stay aligned with compassion when being confronted with the opposing views of others? We don't have to compromise our convictions in order to love people who don't share them. This is the longest episode to date and one of the rawest as well. It's been a couple of months, but Jacob and Scott are back with their first episode of Season 2. In this conversation, the friends talk about the stories we tell about ourselves, how important it is to become aware of them so we can extract ourselves from them, and the necessity for committed gentleness throughout the process. They discuss how it feels to be guided in our choices, by energy or forces that seem to exist outside of ourselves, and how the practice of being open to guidance, from the natural world as an example, creates more opportunities for guidance to present itself. They invite us to look at where we are forcing versus allowing. The focus is on self-love and offers some basic steps we can take right now to align ourselves with more of it. It's a joyful and heart-opening launch to the second season! Click here to visit Scott Stabile's Bigger Love substack page The Reading: "It's one thing to acknowledge how difficult this life can be, but it's another thing to focus on it, to talk about everything that feels wrong all the time, to act like there is only darkness and misery here. In our compulsion not to deny the harsh realities of this unpredictable existence, we often end up denying the extraordinary beauty. We focus our gaze on division and blind ourselves to real connection, we seek out examples of brutality and ignore the many moments of kindness, we bind ourselves to the opinions of others and silence the deep wisdom of our hearts. In our effort to avoid spiritual bypassing we pass right by the endless exhibits of love on this planet, within this humanity, from one to another and another to one. There is so much hardship here, yes, too much, and there is so much beauty too. Where are you looking and what are you looking for?" – Scott Stabile

I don't know. Are You just going to write what I say? I was about to say why don't you write this in prose like 'hu shrugged.' I forget that's how people type. Like they use both hands. Like I broke my arm so I use three fingers on my hand. Also watching you type I can see the words that you type. It's really fun. End. For many people, being in a relationship is the end goal. But having a relationship and having a happy relationship are two entirely different things! Relationships take work. They take introspection, understanding, time, energy, and a whole lot of self-care. In today’s episode you will learn what to do to find and keep the kind of love that you desire. Top Take-A-Ways: Why the best way to find, maintain, or revive a love relationship is to take care of yourself first. The importance of sex, honesty, and clear non-negotiables in relationships, and how to renegotiate the terms of your relationship at any time. What analyzing the amount of energy, joy, and passion you bring to other areas of your life will tell you about the success or failure rate of your romantic relationships. Sam and Patrick have been married for twenty-five years and they would tell you they are one of the happiest couples they know. But they weren’t always this happy. After ten years of marriage, they signed the divorce papers. During the first ten years of their marriage, they struggled through like most people do: trying to navigate life together without any real tools, realizing they were in many ways opposites, fighting often, having sex less and less, distrust and jealousy rearing their ugly heads, and what they believed was falling out of love. They were under tremendous pressure, as many families are these days, raising their two children and each of them pursuing their rigorous careers. After a year apart, against all odds, they decided to get back together. Since then they’ve grown their love, their bond, and created an amazing life together. They became students of love and they never looked back. Eventually all they had experienced and learned culminated into a book, Marriage: From Miserable to Magnificent. How to Keep the Love of Your Life for the Rest of Your Life (available on Amazon). They also have a Podcast: The Not So Perfect Couple Podcast where they share experiences and interview guests that help keep relationships moving forward. Most recently Sam gave a TEDx talk called, “Sex: The New Wonder Drug” that can be seen on Youtube, the TED website Sex: The New Wonder Drug | Sam Cullinane | TEDxNormal or on their website www.Biggerlove.com. Patrick Cullinane is a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold multiple businesses and developed several software applications in the logistics and supply chain industries. His newest project is a company called Zipi which develops software and services in the real estate space. Patrick also serves on the board of 1Life Fully Lived, a non-profit geared towards helping young people find their passion through the entrepreneurial spirit and to dream, plan and live their best lives. Sam Cullinane began her career climbing corporate ladders to achieve the rank of Chief of Staff to the President of an international five-billion-dollar company. Eventually, she also took to entrepreneurial endeavors – starting a few businesses, serving as CFO to multiple corporations, and then joining Patrick. Now they build businesses together. Like everyone in the United States, John Legend has spent much of the past year in lockdown. He has been recording new music (via Zoom), performing on Instagram, and promoting his upcoming album. Though many artists have delayed releasing records until they can schedule concert dates—increasingly the most reliable revenue in the music industry—Legend didn’t want to hold back. The new album, “Bigger Love,” was written before the pandemic and the current groundswell of protest for racial justice, but his message about resilience and faith resonates. All art, Legend tells David Remnick, “is there to help us imagine a different future.”
Celebrated singer, songwriter, actor, and producer John Legend sat down with Sara Bareilles as part of Tribeca’s 2018 Storytellers Series. Multiplatinum artist John Legend has garnered eleven GRAMMY Awards®, an Academy Award®, a Golden Globe Award®, a Tony Award®, and an Emmy Award®, making Legend the first African-American man to earn an EGOT. Legend has released seven celebrated albums including, Get Lifted (2004), Once Again (2006), Evolver (2008), Love in the Future (2013), Darkness and Light (2016), A Legendary Christmas (2018), and Bigger Love (2020). Legend starred in NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert in 2018, winning an Emmy® for Outstanding Variety Special and nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor (Limited Series). John is a partner in Get Lifted Film Co., serving as an Executive Producer for Southern Rites, United Skates, WGN America's Underground, and films Southside with You and La La Land. As a philanthropist, Legend initiated the #FREEAMERICA campaign in 2015 to change the national conversation surrounding our country's misguided criminal justice policies and to end mass incarceration. Sara Bareilles first achieved mainstream critical praise in 2007 with her widely successful hit "Love Song,” which reached No. 1 in 22 countries around the world from her debut album Little Voice. Since then, Sara has taken home a GRAMMY award®, received seven GRAMMY® nominations, two Tony® nominations and three Emmy® nominations. Her book, Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song, was released in the fall of 2015 by Simon & Schuster and is a New York Times best seller. On April 5, 2019 Sara released her fifth full-length and first album of original material since 2013, entitled Amidst The Chaos. For this latest body of work, she joined forces in the studio with legendary Academy Award®-winning producer T Bone Burnett. As a result, the album spotlights her voice as a singer and storyteller like never before, while making an enduring statement. Recently, Sara teamed up with Apple as an executive producer for Little Voice, a 10-episode series for which she will create the original music.

John Legend is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award-winning musician and the founder of Free America, a criminal justice reform advocacy organization. He recently helped launch “Free The Vote,” a fundraising campaign to pay the fines and fees preventing ex-felons in Florida from casting their ballot. He released his newest album, Bigger Love, in June. Stacey Abrams was the 2018 Democratic nominee for Governor of Georgia and previously served as the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives. As the founder of Fair Fight and Fair Count, she has been a major force in the push to advance voting rights and ensure fair elections. Her new book is Our Time is Now: Power, Purpose, and the Fight for a Fair America. Full transcript is here.

Soul für Liebe und für Sex. John Legend lässt diese Themen in seinem neuen Album verschmelzen. Im Soul steckt Liebe in all ihren Formen und Facetten . Und das lässt uns John Legend mit „Bigger Love“ spüren. (superfly.fm)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *This is our 200th official episode of Reggae Lover. We talked about “Upside Down 2020,” the long-anticipated album from Buju Banton.* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There’s such a thing as an instant classic, and this Buju Banton new album is that. Listen to our in-depth analysis of every track. *Buju Banton New Album, Sales and Streams* ------------------------------------------ We also talked about record sales and chart performance. The album got close to 3000 sales in its first week. That includes all physical copies, digital downloads as well as streams. What is a “stream?” What is the stream worth? A stream is a fraction of a sale. So you need a certain amount of streams, whether it be songs or the entire album, in order for it to equal one sale. It was actually a strong debut compared to other releases from Jamaican artists. We look at the fact that *Vybz Kartel* released his album on the same day as Buju. His album, “ Of Dons and Divas ( https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/vybz-kartel-drops-off-of-dons-and-divas-new-mixtape.120499.html ) ,” sold a little less than half that of “Upside Down 2020.” Koffee’s “Rapture,” EP which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album had less than 600 first week sales. We have had episodes ( https://reggaelover.com/blog-podcast-reggae-lover/ ) about Billboard, sales, and what it means for Jamaican reggae artists. Music is actually the marketing tool for touring, merchandise sales, etc. In that case, Buju is in good hands with Roc Nation. I’m sure they’ll exploit this album very well. *Chart Performance* ------------------- The Buju Banton new album, “Upside Down 2020” debuted in the number two position on the Billboard reggae chart. Also, on the Itunes chart for reggae music, it debuted at number two. At the time, Bob Marley held the number one slot on both of those charts. Vybz Kartel’s “Of Dons and Divas” debuted at the number six position on both charts. *The Tastemaker Segment* ------------------------ Last week’s episode, we didn’t get to go into this segment at all. As a result, there were a few things that I wanted to make sure that we mentioned. Firstly, the *Dré Island album* , a debut album that features *Popcaan* on the “We Pray” single. The name of the album is “ Now I Rise ( https://www.vibe.com/2020/05/dre-island-now-rise-boomshots-interview ).” I bumped it or a good little while when it first came out. He’s doing press for the album right now. Go look for “Now I Rise” from Dre Island. Very good music. If you’re a fan of Chronixx or Damian Marley, you’ll definitely love Dre Island. He’s very talented in his own right. He has a song out with Tory Lanez. So he has crossover songs as well. Secondly, there’s an awesome release from Grammy nominee, *Etana*. An album entitled “ Gemini ( https://www.reggaeville.com/artist-details/etana/releases/release/etana-gemini/ ) ,” which debuted on June 19th, distributed by Kojak WorldWide. That album is official. Very good production. “Gemini” brings a strong balance of dancehall, reggae, and lovers’ rock. There is some roots reggae flavor as well. *Kabaka Pyramid* has a feature on there. Nomadz has a feature on there along with an artist known as Yhasha. This may be her best album to date. It’s definitely one of my favorites. Every song has a good vibe. I would add the whole album to my quarantine playlist. Take my recommendation. This is good, solid music. Thirdly, we have to talk about *Koffee*. Her new single entitled “ Pressure ( https://pitchfork.com/news/koffee-shares-new-song-pressure-listen/ ) ” is an inspirational song for the times. She speaks to the ghetto youths, but she’s also talking to every man. Every one of us is under pressure, if not now, at some point. It’s that type of message that can help to pull you through that kind of a situation. So I love it. She’s singing. She’s deejaying. It’s message music. A music video for that is also out. In addition, Koffee is on “Bigger Love,” *John Legend’s new album* , released June 19. The song that features coffee is “ Don’t Walk Away ( http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/entertainment/20200615/koffee-joins-john-legend-bigger-love ).” This song a breakup love song duet between the two of them. The curious thing is, so far, Koffee’s material hasn’t been love songs. There’s Justin Bieber’s, “I don’t care” remix where she appears alongside Chronixx. That would be the first but is more pop dance. “Don’t Walk Away” is more of an R&B style song. Definitely check that out. And of course, if you’re a John Legend fan, we talked about him earlier with this feature on the budget album. He’s got a big project out right now. Finally, we’ve got a new song from *Anthony B* entitled “ Black and Proud ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPysWH6Dd-0 ).” This is not a protest or a revolutionary song a la “Fire Pon Rome.” He’s not telling you who needs to get burnt up in the fire. It’s a revolutionary song along the lines of just making this simple statement. I’m black and I’m proud. If you follow the news you know that saying “Black Lives Matter” is offensive to many people. So saying things like “black power” or “black and proud” is also going against the grain. These are the messages that we want to hear from our reggae artists, especially our cultural artists. And Anthony B is known for being that guy. This one is on the new World Rebirth rhythm produced by Reggae Vibes Music. It’s a brand new song released on July 8th. Anthony B’s “Black and Proud.” Please check it out. It’s awesome. Good reggae music. Good for the heart, the soul, and the brain. *Sound System Update and Wrap up* --------------------------------- We also gave a very concise recap of some recent sound system, soundclash live online events. In conclusion, we announced next week’s special guest will be Walshy Fire ( https://www.walshyfire.com/ ) of *Major Lazor*. John Legend is a multiplatinum recording artist, a winner of the coveted EGOT, a loving family man and, as Marc found out in this conversation, a tremendously nice guy. The combination of John’s talent and his kind disposition is what makes him the type of artist who works with a wide variety of collaborators. John talks about how collaboration defines his professional career, from his first gig working with Lauryn Hill to his new record Bigger Love. He also discusses his marriage to Chrissy Teigen, his work on criminal justice reform and his relationship with Kanye West.

An in depth review of John Legend's new album “Bigger Love.” I swear this guy can do no wrong!! Since arriving on the R&B scene in the early 2000s Mr. Stephens has blessed us with hit album after hit album and there are no signs that he will be slowing down. This album continues to solidify him as what his name says a LEGEND. No longer tied to his piano, as he was earlier in his career, John is a real deal superstar whose vocal talents are unmatched. Paired with perfect production and quality features by Rapsody, Jhene Aiko and more, John Legend's Star just keeps on rising! I also talked about mandatory masks, back to working full time, Queen of the South and other random stuff (business as usual). Just opinions from my side about the albums (lyrics, concept, jokes, etc). ENJOY!!! Requests are always welcome. Follow me on twitter @alop3cia_brown. Like everyone in the United States, John Legend has spent much of the past three months in lockdown.

Patrick, or "Paddy", Cullinane is a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold multiple businesses and developed several software applications in the logistics and supply chain industries. Sam Cullinane began her career climbing corporate ladders to achieve the rank of Chief of Staff of a multi-billion dollar, multi-national company, before leaving that life behind to pursue a career in music, working with Paddy on his endeavors, and joining him to help couples work on their relationship through their podcast, books, speaking a more. Sam and Paddy have been married for over twenty years and they would tell you they are one of the happiest couples they know. But they weren’t always this happy. In fact, after ten years of marriage, they were ready to sign the divorce papers. In their tenth year of marriage, they decided to call it quits and filed for divorce. After a year apart, against all odds, they decided to get back together. This time they came with new insights including recognition of the things each of them brought to the relationship – good and bad. Both made the necessary changes to successfully start their next chapter. For the last ten years they’ve grown their love, their bond, and created an amazing life together. They became students of love and they never looked back. Their book, released July 2017, Bigger Love – is their story along with tips, tools, and tricks for taking your relationship to a higher, deeper, more satisfying level. Their second book, Marriage: From Miserable to Magnificent, was released in early 2020. Key Points from the Episode with Sam & Paddy Cullinane: Sam and Paddy Cullinane have been married for 23 years, but it’s more a tale of two decades because their marriage had two distinct periods. The first 10 years were separate from the second ten (plus) by a year apart where divorce papers had been signed on the back of growing very far apart. Each of them had this sense that you’re married and are happily ever after with the feeling of butterflies and Eros love, as Hollywood tells us. After year three, that feeling had shifted through the day to day of marriage and raising kids. They had moved closer to Sam’s family, her job had changed to being on the road five days a week while Paddy’s career had ups and downs. Through the grind, they felt that initial ‘fire’ was gone. Sam hit on the idea of how you reignite the fire, but a better question is whether you actually want to go back to that, or if something else would be better. Paddy felt that he was very far down on Sam’s priority list, below things like work, the kids, taking a nap, friends, etc. And Sam felt like she was making the money and doing everything and wasn’t sure why she needed Paddy, who seemed to give her nothing but asking for sex. Sam asked Paddy to move out, and also got the opportunity to move to Spain for work, so she left with the kids. Paddy took the time alone to face things on the encouragement of his cousin, who suggested he look inside himself at his part in the problems. That would serve him if things worked out with Sam or not since he takes himself into both situations. Paddy realized he could be happy with or without Sam. He had started to make more money and shared that and his sense of being the source of his own happiness with Sam, which changed how she saw him. Sam felt like he grew up, and that drew her to him. For Sam, she thought the escape from Paddy and to Spain would make everything better, but she found herself to still not be happy. She was working too much, wasn’t finding relationships that interested her, and realized Paddy wasn’t why she was not happy. Sam’s style was to compartmentalize what she faced in life, which was starting to take its toll as the various issues were filling up inside of her. Paddy’s style is very different, with his unhappiness being front and center. He changed by talking about it while before he would sulk and hope Sam would ask what was wrong. They had gone through the divorce process amicably, and signed the papers. Their lawyer never got around to filing them, though. Roughly a year after splitting up, Paddy was visiting the kids in Spain, and they reconnected. No matter who else they dated or thought about, there’s one thing they have that they wouldn’t with anyone else, and that’s an equal investment in their kids, their health and their futures. That shared unconditional love for their kids can be used to see the good in each other, but only if you look for it. They have taken the second part of their marriage as a chance to learn and grow together, which culminated in their first book, Bigger Love (https://amzn.to/2UoBT1n). They recently published a new version of their work, Marriage: from Miserable to Magnificent (https://amzn.to/39utvSe), which adds scientific facts into the discussion and honesty they shared in the first book. Paddy had previously invested a lot of his happiness in whether Sam was paying attention to him, and in the second half, he had found his own sources of enjoyment that had nothing to do with Sam. And Sam had made decisions about what mattered to her most, and would be ways to make her happy, too. Those ideas formed the basis of non-negotiables for them to come back together in their marriage. Sam’s job had been all encompassing, which isn’t sustainable. She talked about the idea of things like that being in sprints, but not taking over all the time. Paddy added the need to think about why you’re doing that sprint and making that purpose stay front and center (e.g. your kids). We got into the sources of frustration, and used a story about socks. If Paddy left his socks around, Sam would either be annoyed that he left them there, or, if she picked them up, got annoyed that she had to do it. Now, she doesn’t like that they’re there, but she lets go of it. It does not have to matter unless you make it. If he does not pick them up, let it go. If she picks them up for him because having them there bothered her enough, then let it go and don’t be resentful. They’re just socks. And of course some things are bigger than that, but many things ultimately are not. One of their pieces of advice that’s tied to this is “Own It, Don’t Own It.” That really stood out to me. It’s about carrying feelings like this around and taking it personally. If Sam came home from a business trip, and Paddy was excited to see her and had all this anticipation about it but she was exhausted and didn’t reciprocate, he would take it so personally and feel crushed. He was owning her feelings and taking them as being about him, and then it sat heavily with him, taking his happiness. If someone comes home from work and is short with us, we tend to get defensive. We’re owning their feelings. Instead, take a step back and recognize that they may have had a tough day and it seems to impacting how they’re interacting, and then ask them to share what they went through. Note that you’re feeling treated in a way you don’t think you deserve, and might there be something else there that needs to be talked about. If there is something you’ve done that sparked that treatment, then you can know about it, apologize and learn. And if there isn’t, your partner gets a chance to check themselves, apologize, and open up about what’s tough for them. Sam and Paddy Cullinane have personal, real-life experience at taking marriage from miserable to magnificent. In fact, that is the title of their new book, Marriage: From Miserable To Magnificent. They were so miserable they went so far as to sign divorce papers. Due to an incredible turn of events, they are now one of the happiest couples they know. Their book is told in a practical, yet humorous format presented as He Said, She Said and followed by the science to support their conclusions (They Say). They share formulas to deal with conflict, arguments and fighting as well as a simple solution to improve your sex life. Sam and Paddy are also hosts of ‘The Not-So-Perfect Couple’ podcast. Now I recognize I'm not my emotions. They are something that happens to me. So those recognitions have changed my life entirely. Patrick: The feelings are real, but how you choose to react to the feelings, that's what you have control over. So the emotion is typically your choice in reaction or your body's physical reaction to the feelings. Thoughts on Breathing Patrick: Well, that's interesting because we spent a day with a Peruvian Shaman last year who talked to us about breathing and ever since he was talking to us about it, I see it. I'm like, oh my God, somebody told us about this last year and so he was talking to us about this now and so you know how the universe conspires to put things in front of you once you figure it out. Um, but yeah, we will use just taking a normal breath in a day where we're doing what, 28 percent capacity of our lungs and feeding your body. And so just forcing yourself to breathe when I feel any stress or laying there having trouble sleeping or any of that, I just breathe. I try to maximize my lung capacity, hold it for a little bit, oxygenate my body and then breathe out. Then I have to do that, focus on my breathing when I meditate. Sam: It's amazing, but as soon as I take my mind to my breath, I'm in the moment. It's immediate. So I love to use that in meditation. I use it if I get frustrated, I focus on the breath. Breath is instrumental in my life and my mindfulness practice. Suggested Resources Book: Marrige: From Miserable to Magnificent by Sam Cullinane App: n/a

This week we sit-down with one of the authors of this book Happy Together: Using the Science of Positive Psychology to Build Love that Lasts Suzann Pileggi-Pawleski she also has a Master of Applied Positive Psychology degree who works as a freelance writer and well-being consultant specializing in the science of happiness and its effects on health and relationships. She gives “Romance and Research” (TM) workshops around the world with James and she writes the "Science of Well-being" column for Live Happy, where she is also a contributing editor. Previously, she directed award-winning media relations campaigns for Fortune 500 clients and worked as a publicist at Radio City Music Hall and a producer for The Joan Rivers Show. A year ago or so Sam listened to this book Happy Together: Using the Science of Positive Psychology to Build Love that Lasts when she was on a road trip. She liked it but felt like many of the concepts didn't sink in as much as she would have liked. She recently reread it while doing some more research for the second edition of our book Bigger Love which we're also going to release under a new name - to be announced. Part of why she read it was because it was also written by a happily married couple like their own book. Unlike Paddy and Sam, they are both scholars who work in the field of Positive Psychology - so this is not only their experience but also some of the science around love and happiness.
Dr. Amy Muise's research focuses on understanding how couples can maintain happier relationships and have more fulfilling sex lives over time. She uses dyadic and longitudinal research methods and analyses (i.e., daily experience studies, multi-level modeling) to understand how sexual processes unfold to impact relationship well-being in the context of couples' daily lives as well as over the course of time as relationships grow and develop. Dr. Muise is interested in understanding these processes not only when couples are doing well, but also when they are navigating relationship transitions, such as the transition to parenthood, or coping with a clinical sexual issue, such as low sexual desire. Sam is a super fan of their guest Dr. Amy Muise …. As they are working on the second edition of our book Bigger Love, Sam's been getting really into not just what people say about relationships but the people who are studying them with science. Dr. Amy Muise is one of her new go-to experts. She runs the Sexual Health & Relationships Lab (aka the SHaRe lab) where they focus on research relating to sex and happiness in long-term romantic relationships. Dr. Amy is a renowned social psychologist whose CV - that's what they call a resume in most other parts of the world - it is 35 pages long highlighting all of the publications and awards and publicity she's received for her research including The Today Show, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine. What she is sharing with Sam and Paddy today isn't just her experience or her opinion … which if you dig deep on many, many books and podcasts regarding relationships are simply someone's opinion or experience … but on scientific studies and actual evidence.

And so just just forcing yourself to breathe when I feel any stress or laying there having trouble sleeping or any of that, I just breathe. I try to maximize my lung capacity, hold it for a little bit, oxygenate my body and then breath out. Suggested Resources Sam's Book: Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High by by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny and Ron McMillan Patrick's Book: Man's Search For Meaning by Victor Frankl App: No app Bullying Story Patrick: Sam brought up the fact that she thinks the biggest bully she sees is me bullying myself. Do you know what I mean? My dialogue of beating myself up and that kind of thing. So yeah, absolutely. not doing it. It's, it's part of the love yourself thing. I recognize that I have a tendency to, to beat myself up a little bit or self deprecate, you know, do those types of things. And so I try not to bully myself by being mindful and loving myself and forgiveness. Self-Forgiveness is the key to all that. It's like, OK, I screwed up and I'm over it. Sam: I do have a bullying story. I guess I don't know if mindfulness would have helped or not. So I grew up in Salt Lake City when I went to elementary school in Salt Lake City and then we started moving. It's primarily Mormon community and I'm not Mormon. I was raised sort of Episcopalian and I think when, I can't remember how old they are when they get baptized, but it's older, it's like third or fourth grade, I want to say they're eight. So at age eight they get baptized and I think that's when they start to recognize that they're in this religion and it becomes very important to them as they learn all the stuff that they have to learn. A lot of the kids weren't allowed to play with me because I wasn't lbs. There's one instance where this kid just was so mean and that was in front of a large group of kids and he was like, what religion are you again? And I was like, I'm Episcopalian. And he said, a pissa what? You know, you're going to hell, right? And I was like, what? [I said to my] mom, I'm going to hell. So that was very damaging, right? It took a while to figure out how to deal with it. Like understanding different religions, why cultures clash and why war happens and all the bad things. But the interesting thing about that story is that later I was in college at the University of Utah and I saw that kid. I recognized him immediately and he was drunker than shit. He was hammered drunk, which of course is very against the Mormon religion. They're not allowed to drink or smoke or swear or anything. And I [thought] what a hypocrite, you know, but it turned out that he was actually homosexual, which is also very against the Mormon religion. And I think that once I figured that out about him, I recognized that a lot of people who bully are people that are hurting. They hurt others because they're hurting themselves. So he probably knew when he was eight. I mean, most of the homosexuals that I know, know early on that they're not like everybody else and that they have different attractions. He probably knew that. And so he probably was hurting, confused and conflicted and lashed out at me because people that are hurting hurt others. So I think that was an interesting Aha moment for me.

This time, they recognized the things each of them brought to the relationship—good and bad.
