This week we're sharing an interview with Tomas Rothaus, author of the recently publish memoir, Another War Is Possible: Militant Anarchist Experiences in the Antiglobalization Era, out this year from PM Press. We speak about the anti-globalization movement and how it's remembered, debates around mass mobilizations and Black Bloc street conflicts, mentorship and inter-generationality in anarchism and the importance of a sober audacity in political struggle. Tomas has three more, related books scheduled to come out in the next 2 years listed at PM Press's website. We hope you enjoy. You can follow Tomas on Bluesky via @BatallonBakunin.Bsky.Social or check out more of his works via his author page on PM Press's website. Announcement Casey Goonan Hunger Strike We'd like to share a quick announcement that anarchist prisoner, Casey Goonan, initiated on August 29th a hunger strike in solidarity with the hunger stirke of T. Hoxha, a prisoner held by the UK of the Filton24, and the demand for her movement to a hospital due to malnutrition and medical neglect at HMP Peterborough. You can find the text of a letter describing the conditions and who to email below. The Filton24 are a group of 24 individuals being lumped by the British state for a direct action to dismantle weapons at an Elbit Systems facility in August of 2024. You can learn more about the case at https://freethefilton23.com/meet-the-filton24/ . For some context, you can check out a recent interview by 12 Rules For What podcast on the impacts of proscription by the British government against Palestine Action. The support letter for T. Hoxha reads: RALPH.LUBKOWSKI@SODEXOGOV.CO.UK HMPPeterborough.admin@nhft.nhs.uk pbfamilymatters@sodexogov.co.uk tony.simpson@sodexogov.co.uk Ian.whiteside@sodexogov.co.uk PBgeneralenquiries@sodexogov.co.uk Ian.whiteside@sodexogov.co.uk karen.reid@sodexogov.co.uk To whom it should concern, An immediate transfer of care for T Hoxha to a hospital in Northampton Healthcare Trust must be actioned. It is now day 18 of her hunger strike and medical neglect by your prison has since resulted in fever, persistent headache on the left side of her head, vomiting after taking vitamins, continued jaw pain, shedding hair and skin discoloration. Her condition is now considered in the “danger zone” by an advance nurse practitioner. That an advanced nurse practitioner was not made aware of her case until Day 17 is incredibly improper practise for the treatment of prisoners on hunger strike, failing to begin a food refusal log until Day 5 of the hunger strike and failing to appropriately maintain this since as well as, the failure to provide consistent regular medical attention, providing electrolyte sachets and monitoring have proved HMP Peterborough to be incapable of fulfilling their duty of care to prisoners in their custody. T has simply demanded her rights to fair treatment as an unconvicted prisoner of conscience. We are aware of the methods by which her rights are being removed by your prison as means of intimidation and isolation. Another Sodexo prison, HMP Bronzefield, is currently in the media and public discourse due to two deaths, an assault and forced excessive lock up of prisoners last month. Given this, I am certain that HMP Peterborough will be soon also be investigated for direct medical neglect and abuse of authority in light of the seriousness of this matter. The medical necessity of socialisation is a fact. Depriving T of the right to maintain correspondence with her community, or prevent her contribution to the improvement of your prison through work and classes indicates a concerted effort by the prison, you, to silence and allow physical harm to come to a prisoner in your care. Your actions have placed T in immediate medical distress and ANY staff in your prison aware of her case who has maintained silence and hidden behind prison procedure will be considered responsible for the deterioration of T's health and any health consequences both immediate and long term. I repeat, ANY HMP Peterborough staff that have allowed this life threatening situation to escalate to this point can be held liable. Once again, I demand an immediate transfer of care for T Hoxha to a hospital in Northampton Healthcare Trust and the prison immediately reinstate, in both writing and action, the little socialisation T's managed to have perfectly safely for a while now. Thank you for your attention to this matter. . … . .. Featured Track: Genova Libera by Brigada Flores Magon from Tout pour Tous Mentira by Manu Chao from Clandestino

We explore whether workers in contemporary capitalism are truly free—or trapped in a form of “wage slavery.” Leiter uses thought experiments to probe the limits of workplace freedom. He also examines Marx's labor theory of value—its strengths and flaws—and shows how modern capitalism both confirms and diverges from Marx's predictions. The conversation then turns to labor, technological change, human nature, and artificial intelligence—culminating in a pressing question: what futures of work await us under capitalism?Read "Marx (The Routledge Philosophers)" by Brian Leiter and Jaime Edwards here: https://www.amazon.com/Marx-Routledge-Philosophers-Brian-Leiter/dp/1138938505Chapters:[00:00] Introduction and Guest Welcome[00:18] Thought Experiment: Are You a Wage Slave?[02:10] Free Labor vs. Unfree Labor[05:11] Historical Context and Modern Implications[16:07] Capitalism's Role in Technological Progress[20:22] Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work[32:05] The Essential Nature of Human Beings[38:59] Critiques of Marx's Naivety[46:25] Technological Innovation and Labor[51:33] Marx's Labor Theory of Value[58:18] Fetishism of Commodities[01:00:59] Future of Capitalism and Human Nature[01:10:14] Concluding Thoughts on Marx and Capitalism

It seems like there's nowhere to focus lately except on the crumbling of America's foundation, but that disregards the fact that America's foundation was never secure, safe, or fair + at some point, the bottom was going to fall out. It's unfortunate, the manner in which it did, but it was only a matter of time. And it makes sense that the bad guys got to it first, because the good guys would have wanted to do it safely and consciously, but because the bad guys called out the flawed system first, they get to exacerbate those flaws for their own personal gain until the good guys get enough momentum on their side to reclaim the ground and restore some justice and rebuild on a more solid/equitable/healthy foundation. America has always been built to protect the elite/wealthiest/most racist/performative heteronormative white man's property and never ever had the interest of the working people in mind.If you have to work for a paycheck, you are the masses that the laws were meant to police. As the hilarious and very real Brennan Lee Mulligan once said “Laws are threats made by the dominant socioeconomic-ethnic group in a given nation. It's just the promise of violence that's enacted and the police are basically an occupying army. You know what I mean?”Which brings me to the also relevant wendigoon quote: “And remember kids, the next time that somebody tells you, "The government wouldn't do that," oh yes they would.”Capitalism is a racket that is built to fail. Like a snake eating its own tail, there is only so much growth/exploitation/looting/violence you can get away with before you start to generate some pushback. In this episode of Branded Leaders, host Ben Kaplan sits down with Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK, to explore why safe, logical marketing often fails — and why embracing chaos, irrationality, and unconventional thinking can create the biggest wins.Rory explains why capitalism is less about efficiency and more like betting on long shots, how seemingly “bonkers” decisions (like Amazon betting on Prime) can redefine entire industries, and why reframing simple observations is the real engine of creativity. The conversation dives into politics, persuasion, and the psychology of risk-taking — from Donald Trump's use of concrete language, to Elon Musk's non-neurotypical way of seeing the world, to why opportunity cost is more important than cost-cutting.Packed with humor, sharp insights, and provocative reframes, this episode is a masterclass in why playing it safe may be the riskiest move of all.

What if your dream life wasn't a weekend escape, but a daily, co-created reality rooted in purpose, belonging, and regeneration? In this episode of Healthy Waves, host Avik Chakraborty dives into a transformative conversation with Marat Omarov — visionary founder of The Ark, a regenerative village in Costa Rica. From leading Kazakhstan's Expo 2017 to walking away from high-profile success for deeper purpose, Marat shares the emotional, mental, and economic reinvention that birthed a thriving post-capitalist community. Together, they explore why the current model of capitalism is failing us, how regenerative frameworks can restore harmony, and why shared ownership is more than an economic tool — it's a way of life. This episode challenges us to rethink how we live, build, and connect. Tune in if you're curious about intentional communities, sustainable living, and how to align your inner purpose with outer impact. About the Guest:Marat Omarov is the founder of The Ark, a regenerative village in Costa Rica that blends ecological design, conscious capitalism, and deep community values. Formerly recognized by the President of Kazakhstan for leading Expo 2017, Marat left the high-performance world to build a future-focused model rooted in connection, contribution, and purpose-driven living. Key Takeaways : Reinvention Requires Unlearning: Marat shares how leaving a globally celebrated career took years of deep emotional work, including therapy, to deprogram societal, Soviet-era, and capitalist conditioning. True Regeneration Starts Internally: Building The Ark wasn't just about infrastructure—it was about shedding old identities and creating space for conscious, integrated living. Disconnect to Reconnect: Marat emphasizes the need for digital and social disconnection to rediscover personal purpose, urging listeners to spend meaningful time in nature and with purpose-led communities. Capitalism's Veil is Falling: The current economic system prioritizes profit over people and planet. Regenerative living offers an inclusive alternative that values contribution, stewardship, and shared prosperity. Open-Gated, Not Closed-Off: The Ark isn't a gated elite enclave—it's a living example of accessible regenerative living that includes Costa Rican families, community elders, and local partnerships. A Call to Action: Even if you're not ready to move to a regenerative village, the episode invites you to rethink your daily life—your community, schedule, and   Connect with the Guest:Website: https://theark.worldInstagram: https://instagram.com/theark.worldAttend online gatherings or visit The Ark in Costa Rica to experience regenerative living firsthand. It's not hard to find critics of capitalism in the current moment but this has always been true: as long as we have had capitalism we have had critics of capitalism. What are the recurring themes of these critiques and how have they helped to shape the economics profession and capitalism itself?John Cassidy is an author at the New Yorker magazine and also the author of several books. His most recent two are Capitalism and Its Critics: A History: From the Industrial Revolution to AI and How Markets Fail: The Logic of Economic Calamities.Greg and John discuss the multifaceted and varied criticisms of capitalism throughout history. Over the course of the conversation, Greg recounts how John's books have investigated economic crises, the behavioral finance revolution, and the diverse critiques of capitalism from both the left and right. John brings up several examples of historical economic figures, from Adam Smith to Marx, and examines how crises have shaped economic thought and policy. Greg and John also make a point to highlight lesser-known critics and movements, underscoring their unsung importance of economic history.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:When both the left and the right turn against capitalism04:05: In 2016, when Trump was running for the Republican nomination and Bernie Sanders was running for the Democratic nomination, I thought, if you go back into history, it's a long time since we've had sort of major candidates running for office as critics of capitalism from the right and the left. Bernie, of course, has always been a critic of capitalism. He's independent socialist—I'd call him a social democrat, but we can get into what those terms mean if you want. But what's really new was Trump, running from the right with a critique. I mean, people have sort of forgotten now, but when he started out, he was criticizing the banks. He was criticizing big businesses for offshoring. He was running with a critique of capitalism from the right. So that got me thinking about maybe there's a book in how we got here. How can America, sort of world capital of capitalism and always very supportive of the system, come to this state of affairs where the two major candidates are running against it basically?A historical approach to capitalism12:21: Capitalism means anything involving large-scale production on the basis of privately owned assets. Private means of production. And if you adopt that broad definition, then mercantile capitalism, slavery, the plantation economies is a form of capitalism. Why economists often miss the real economy09:51: I realized in sort of maybe the late nineties, early 2000s, that if you want to speak to an economist about what was going on in the economy and what's happening in Washington, there really wasn't much point in calling up Harvard or MIT or Chicago or whatever, because the economics department would say, "Well, we don't really have anybody who covers that. You need to go to the business school, or you need to go to the business economists." So I think maybe there's been a backlash against that since the Great Financial Crisis. I know there's been a lot of efforts inside various universities, especially in Europe, to make the syllabuses more relevant, more sort of real-world based. But I still think at the higher levels of the subject, it's still extremely abstract.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Adam SmithDot-com BubbleGreat RecessionNeoliberalismKeynesian EconomicsMilton FriedmanKarl MarxRosa LuxemburgIndustrial RevolutionCapitalismLudditeWilliam ThompsonRobert OwenThomas CarlyleGlobalizationDependency TheoryAnna WheelerFlora TristanJoan RobinsonRobert SolowPaul SamuelsonJ. In this episode, Will and Adam examine former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich's comments comparing today to the Gilded Age. We acknowledge there are several similarities, including increasing wealth disparity, the emergence of disruptive technology, and widespread commingling of government with business. We specifically discuss the recent discussion around the government taking stake in public companies, which, though has a precedent, was used in the past during times of financial crisis, i.e., to keep automakers afloat during the financial crisis. We discuss the (until just recently) ebullient vibes in the stock market, and why some of the forefront of the AI revolution are starting to sound a little more cautious about what AI can deliver in the near-term. However, that has not stopped investors from returning to familiar favorites from the 2021 run-up, with this rally's best performers including: Non-profitable tech Most shorted stocks Meme stocks With Fed chair Powell on tap for Jackson Hole, we look at the recent Fed minutes, which indicating a focus more on inflation than jobs, and why that could change if job revisions continue to be revised lower. However, with the inflation effect of tariffs expected to shift from businesses to consumers soon, will the Fed have the flexibility to cut rates as much as investors currently believe? With both anecdotes and hard data indicating a struggling consumer, the Fed is in a tough spot and under continuing political pressure. We conclude with why it is important to remain systematic and focused on long-term investing success and resist the temptation of the continued gamification of stock trading, with platforms like Robin Hood now exploring the addition of traditional sports wagering alongside retail investment accounts. What if that voice telling you to “be more productive” isn't your inner wisdom but internalized capitalism? Most of us are living with constant pressure to optimize, monetize, and harvest every moment of our lives, and we don't even realize it. In this raw episode, Gervase shares a vulnerable moment from her own life that perfectly illustrates how capitalism has trained us to believe we don't get to just exist. She breaks down how this system affects modern women and offers practical ways to reclaim your humanity. This isn't about becoming anti-capitalism overnight, it's about recognizing the programming so you can make conscious choices about your own 500 square feet of life. Listen to this episode to discover: The moment Gervase realized she couldn't even enjoy a peaceful lunch with her son without thinking about content creation How internalized capitalism shows up in everyday life (spoiler: it's that voice saying “you're not doing enough”) Why we've been programmed to turn every hobby, idea, and beautiful moment into a business opportunity The “harvest mentality” and why it's running you ragged How capitalism affects both stay-at-home and working moms (and why both feel like they're never enough) Simple acts of rebellion: ways to reclaim moments that capitalism can't touch Why your worth isn't determined by your output, and how to actually believe it How to create conscious moments of rest and pleasure without guilt The ripple effect of tending to your own “500 square feet” instead of trying to change the world This episode is for you if: You feel guilty taking breaks unless you've “earned” them Every hobby feels like it should become a side hustle You can't enjoy peaceful moments without thinking about productivity You're exhausted from the constant pressure to do more, be more, create more You want practical ways to reclaim your humanity in a productivity-obsessed world Resource Mentioned in this Episode:   Toi Marie (Smith): https://www.toimarie.com/     Follow Gervase:    Let's hang out on IG: @gervasekolmos  Want to go deeper (and get juicy discounts)? Common Sense Capitalism with John Catsimatidis Jr. In this week's episode of Payne Points of Wealth, we sit down with John A. Catsimatidis Jr., President and COO of Red Apple Group, a $7 billion powerhouse spanning energy, supermarkets, media, real estate, and investments. In a wide-ranging conversation, we discuss how John applies elements of Warren Buffett's investment philosophy to his own portfolio management. We forecast the direction of energy prices and their impact on inflation, and explore what Fed interest rate cuts could mean for an ailing real estate market. We also dive into Gen Z's affordability crisis and how to solve the current New York City housing shortage without resorting to socialism. John's approach to life, business, and investing is refreshingly straightforward—rooted in common sense, the ability to integrate principles across many disciplines, driven with clarity & conviction. Whether you're an investor, entrepreneur, or just curious about the current forces shaping our economy, this episode offers invaluable insights from one of NYC's rising business leaders.

Those on the far left need to read the Bible carefully and practice what Jesus preached, not some made-up political theology that equates Christianity with wokeness. It's simply not true. Christ said you should give your own goods to the poor, not that you should force someone to give up theirs.
