Sometimes, in the midst of the nuance, complexity, and confusion of everyday life, it's good to return to first principles. That's exactly what Glenn Packiam has done with his new book What Is A Christian, Anyway? The title of this book poses a simple and obvious question that the modern (post-modern? Post-postmodern?) church sometimes forgets. Packiam reminds us that this question is an old one, and that it has a clear and beautiful answer: The Nicene Creed. This book gently walks the reader through the Nicene Creed, explaining it line by line. In the church I attend, the Anglican Church, we recite the Nicene Creed most Sundays in our service, so I've recited it thousands of times, and I've even studied it. But I found Glenn's new book both intellectually and spiritually nourishing, and I'm glad to have him on the program to discuss it. By the way, this is not the first time I have interviewed Glenn Packiam. To read or listen to my 2019 interview with Packiam, click here. Glenn Packiam is a pastor, author, and practical theologian, who currently serves as the lead pastor of RockHarbor Church, in Costa Mesa, California. Prior to taking on this role, he served as associate senior pastor at New Life Church (newlifechurch.org) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and as the lead pastor of New Life Downtown, a congregation of New Life Church. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

Scottish Born, Colorodo Bred Show Notes and Reviews Colorado was long a bastion of the craft beer scene, and out of that grew a now-booming craft whiskey industry. Among the first of those whiskeymakers was Boulder Spirits (part of Vapor Distillery), who imported Alastair Brogan in 2012. His vision was clear: to create the best American single malt whiskey possible, while honoring traditional methods and embracing the distinctive Colorado environment. The Colorado microclimate plays a crucial role in Boulder Spirits' unique flavor profile. With significant temperature and humidity swings, whiskey ages differently here than in Scotland or Kentucky, experiencing higher evaporation rates that concentrate flavors more rapidly. While their American Single Malt garners the headlines, they also make a fantastic bourbon, one that despite its relatively low proof (88) was full-bodied and flavorful. It confirmed my suspicions (piqued after chatting with Chattanooga) that I love malted bourbons, where malt is the secondary grain rather than rye or wheat. It holds up at a lower proof so much better than the other two. Education remains the greatest barrier to growth - while we whiskey nerds love American Single Malts and different mashbills, the wider audience isn't always aware that ASM is even a thing, let alone a malted bourbon. That education is helped by collaborating with folks like Lost Lantern (that's how I first heard about Boulder) and putting out high-powered releases like hazmat single malt in armagnac casks. I missed them by just a day while in Denver, but won't miss them the next time. Extreme Heat: More Dangerous Than We Think?Extreme heat, one of the adverse consequences of climate change, exacerbates drought, damages agriculture, and profoundly impacts human health. Heat is the top weather-related killer in the United States, contributing to deaths that arise from heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. As temperatures are projected to increase, so will the risk of heat-related deaths. Urban heat islands, cities with large numbers of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure, are ‘islands' of hot temperatures due to the reduced natural landscape, heat-generating human-made activities, and large-scale urban configuration. More than 40 million people live in urban heat islands in the United States, with this number only increasing as people continue to move from rural to urban areas. Around 56% of the world's total population lives in cities. Those living in large cities are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, with research showing an increased mortality risk of 45% compared to rural areas. The risk of heat-related exhaustion and death is a major public health concern that is exacerbated by the climate crisis. The National Weather Service is in the process of creating a new interface known as HeatRisk, which uses a five-point scale to monitor the heat-related risk for vulnerable populations based on local weather data and health indicators. By mapping heat risk, climate scientists hope that individuals will now have a better understanding of the safety concerns associated with being outside during times of extreme heat. Understanding Heat Index DynamicsBefore stepping outside, most individuals check the daily weather prediction to get a sense of the average temperature. In order to measure the perceived temperature, climate scientists use a heat index, a calculation that combines air temperature and relative humidity to create a human-perceived equivalent temperature. Accurate prediction of the heat index is imperative as every passing year marks the warmest on record, with dangerous extreme heat predicted to become commonplace across arid regions of the world. Therefore, tracking such calculations is necessary in assessing future climate risk. Areas especially vulnerable to extreme heat heavily rely on an accurate prediction of temperature to determine if it is safe to go outside. However, there are over 300 heat indexes used worldwide to calculate the threat from heat, defeating the potential universality of this metric. Each heat index weighs factors differently, making it difficult to differentiate between various metrics. Dozens of factors are used to estimate the daily temperature based on predictions of vapor pressure, height, clothing, or sunshine levels. In addition, most heat indexes report the temperature assuming that you are a young, healthy adult and are resting in the shade, not in the sun. If outdoors, the heat index could be 15 degrees higher. If you are older, you may not be as resilient during intense temperatures. As a result, many climate scientists are calling for heat indexes that reveal the apparent risk of being outdoors on any given day. The elderly, children and infants, and those suffering from chronic diseases are more vulnerable to high temperatures than healthy, young adults, which needs to be accounted for when surveying temperature risk. Advanced Heat Assessment Tools: HeatRisk and WBGTThe National Weather Service's HeatRisk index is different from previous models as it identifies unusual heat times and places, also taking into account unusually warm nights. As such, it provides a more universal measure accounting for the degree to which people in the area are acclimated to various heat temperatures. The HeatRisk index can thus be used to gauge levels of danger associated with temperature, potentially altering an individual's behavioral patterns. For those working in outdoor fields, the WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measure can be particularly useful as a way to measure heat stress as it takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud coverage. Different from the heat index, the WBGT includes both temperature and humidity and is calculated for areas in the shade. If not exercising or working outdoors, people can revert to the HeatRisk scale to calculate the potential hazards of being outside for longer periods. Heat Indexes are Harder to Calculate Than They AppearBecause scientists have to account for a variety of factors like geography, physics, and physiology, establishing a truly universal heat index is unlikely. For regions like Colorado, creating the criteria for a heat advisory has proven shockingly difficult. Heat indexes typically rely on temperature and humidity, however, the Colorado landscape is so dry that an advisory is very rarely triggered, even during heat waves. In such scenarios, the HeatRisk index provides a better gauge for outdoor safety. Most people underestimate the dangers of extreme heat and often ignore warning messages from local authorities. Educational programs are vital in informing the public on the dangers of extreme heat.Who is David Romps?David Romps, UC Berkeley professor of Earth and Planetary Science, is at the forefront of heat index research. Romps has found that those exposed to extreme heat suffer restricted blood flow and are often unable to physiologically compensate. Through his research, Romps believes that heat index calculations often underestimate the potential heat impacts on individuals, with the human body being more susceptible to heightened temperatures than commonly understood. The Gilded Age was by no means simply an East Coast phenomenon. Wealth, position and social structure evolved across the country as railroads and improved technology pushed the country west. Denver, Colorado, grew from a "tavern town" at the foothills of the Rockies to an important Western center for commerce and society. Social Denver was largely ruled by the Southern-born Louise Sneed Hill whose very different and modern vision for how society could work paved a path for much more -- including new and more modern roles for women. Author Shelby Carr Neuhauser joins Carl for the fascinating look into a true Western woman of the Gilded Age.This episode was edited by Kieran Gannon.

Is Barry Morphew Guilty Or Innocent? Barry Morphew was first thrust into the national spotlight in May 2020, when his wife Suzanne Morphew vanished from their home in Salida, Colorado, on Mother's Day weekend. Barry told police she went for a bike ride and never returned. But almost immediately, investigators began to suspect foul play—and Barry became their primary focus. A year later, in 2021, Barry was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, even though Suzanne's body hadn't been found. Prosecutors laid out a circumstantial case built on digital data, suspicious behavior, and a crumbling marriage. But after major missteps by the prosecution—including withheld evidence and discovery violations—the case collapsed in 2022 and the charges were dropped. Then in 2023, Suzanne's remains were finally discovered in a remote area of Colorado. A forensic bombshell followed: BAM, a rare tranquilizer used on wildlife, was found in her bones. Barry, who had experience using BAM from his days as a deer farmer, was re-indicted in 2025. Prosecutors now say this evidence links him directly to Suzanne's death. Barry Morphew maintains his innocence, and his defense argues the case is still circumstantial, flawed, and built on faulty assumptions. The question facing the courts—and the public—is whether this time, the evidence will finally be enough to hold him accountable. PROSECUTORS SAY HE DID IT • Suzanne's remains were found in 2023 with BAM (a rare wildlife tranquilizer) in her bones. • Barry was the ONLY private individual in the area known to have purchased BAM (from Indiana, during deer farming). • A plastic syringe cap from a dart was found in the family dryer with Barry's shorts. • Barry's phone went into airplane mode minutes after Suzanne's final message. He went “dark” for ~8 hours. • His truck telemetry system also failed to log during key early morning hours on May 10 — the exact time he claimed he was driving to a job site. • Surveillance showed Barry dumping unknown trash in 5+ commercial dumpsters on May 10 — and couldn't say what he threw away. • A cracked bedroom doorframe suggested a violent altercation. Barry denied knowing how it got there. • Suzanne had just told Barry (via text): “I'm done.” • She was having a secret 2-year affair and planned to leave him. • Barry told police their marriage was “great.” Suzanne's texts said she felt unsafe. DEFENSE SAYS IT'S REASONABLE DOUBT • No BAM or tranquilizer vials were found during 2020 searches. • Dart gun was found disassembled. No proof it was recently used. • The “syringe cap” had no prints, no DNA, and couldn't be dated. • No murder weapon was recovered. • No blood. No trace evidence. No eyewitness. No confession. • Suzanne's cause of death is “homicide in the setting of BAM intoxication,” but there's no confirmed mechanism (e.g. suffocation, overdose, blunt trauma). • Unidentified male DNA was found on Suzanne's car and bike helmet — linked via CODIS to known sex offenders in other states. • Prosecutors say they ruled out these men by location. But the origin of the DNA? Still unexplained. • Barry's defense argues the entire case is circumstantial and built around prosecutorial bias. • The 2022 case collapsed due to major discovery violations. Judge barred 14 expert witnesses. Charges were dropped. THE QUESTION IS: Did Barry use a rare tranquilizer only he had access to, kill Suzanne, and cover it up? Or is this a story of a man wrongly accused, with sloppy investigation and missing forensic proof? What do YOU believe? The Federal Theatre joins Denver's list of vintage movie palaces turned music venue after the folks behind The Oriental Theater recently announced they were taking over the space. Could this be a new catalyst for more business along this Northside strip? Then, after President Trump complained that his portrait at the state capitol was “truly the worst”, it was removed — but legislators and History Colorado are trying to decide if the paintings should be replaced by something different altogether. Host Bree Davies is joined by Westword editor in chief Patty Calhoun to dig into these stories, plus producer Olivia Jewell Love pops by to share listener comments on everything from flock cameras to witchcraft. Bree talked about the Federal Theatre's fundraiser to get the old venue running again and our episode with conservative talk radio host Jeff Hunt. After our show with Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas, listener Fiona had questions about other police departments having access to Denver's flock camera data. Some topics in pediatrics are flashy — like seizures, mystery rashes and fevers. While those often make headlines, others, like pediatric nephrology, are a routine but critical part of daily practice. Understanding these bread-and-butter issues is essential to diagnosing so many patients. Protein in the urine, blood pressure creeping up or a UTI that is more than ‘just a UTI' are often signs that something may be wrong with the kidneys. In this episode, we examine those practical essentials and learn how PCPs can feel confident in managing these diagnoses. This episode was recorded on the exhibit floor of the 2025 Pediatric Academic Societies Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. Joining us for this episode are Bradley Warady, MD, and Nathan Bines, MD, both from Children's Mercy Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Dr. Warady is the Director of the Division of Nephrology, a Professor of Pediatrics and the McLaughlin Family Endowed Chair in Nephrology. Dr. Beins is the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Training Program, as well as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics. Some highlights from this episode include: Understanding the core kidney issues in general pediatrics How to identify these conditions early The difference between benign findings and red flags Tools for friendly language about topics that might be sensitive or embarrassing for a child For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org.
