Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.30.514438v1?rss=1 Authors: Shvetcov, A., Ruitenberg, M. J., Delerue, F., Gold, W. A., Brown, D. A., Finney, C. A. Abstract: Spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when the spinal cord is damaged from either a traumatic event or disease. SCI is characterised by multiple injury phases that affect the transmission of sensory and motor signals and lead to temporary or long-term functional deficits. There are few treatments for SCI. Estrogens and estrogenic compounds, however, may effectively mitigate the effects of SCI and therefore represent viable treatment options. This review systematically examines the pre-clinical literature on estrogen and estrogenic compound neuroprotection after SCI. Several estrogens were examined by the included studies: estrogen, estradiol benzoate, Premarin, isopsoralen, genistein, and selective estrogen receptor modulators. Across these pharmacotherapies, we find significant evidence that estrogens indeed offer protection against myriad pathophysiological effects of SCI and lead to improvements in functional outcomes, including locomotion. A STRING functional network analysis of proteins modulated by estrogen after SCI demonstrated that estrogen simultaneously upregulates known neuroprotective pathways, such as HIF-1, and downregulates pro-inflammatory pathways, including IL-17. These findings highlight the strong therapeutic potential of estrogen and estrogenic compounds after SCI. Copy rights belong to original authors.  I’ve got 5 menopause fitness questions all cued up today. In this roundup from our Flipping 50 Insiders, Instagram, and iTunes comments I’m answering 5 questions. I bet one or more of them is a lingering question for you too, or you’ll love listening to confirm what you thought all along was spot on. And I’ll link to each of these too if you’re not following and want to hang out to see a positive message on your social media for a change. That brings me to the sponsor of this episode. I’ll also link to a very special opportunity this month… if you’ve got 20 or more pounds to lose, and you know after 50 it’s different. It’s also different losing 20 vs a few. And if you’ve accumulated a mass of diet experience over the years, it can be really hard to know what the right thing to do at this point in your life really is. My Fit-U program is 50% off enrollment right now, with a special bonus for the first students – my Metabolism Mastery course (a $699 value) PLUS a special Fasting component layered into that. Is soy or almond milk healthier for menopausal women? I first wrote about this in You Still Got It, Girl! Soy is an estrogenic, an obesogenic, and a goitrogenic. Estrogenic – it mimics estrogen, confusing your body Obesogenic – increases fat stores Goitrogenic – disrupts thyroid That said there are a lot of benefits, like the increased protein that if you’re trading dairy because of food sensitivities, lactose intolerance, or gut issues, or in my case when I initially gave it up it was because of mucous that disrupted both running, teaching fitness, and speaking. Surprisingly, some gut issues I’d had for years also improved. What’s the bottom line on soy today? What are your thoughts on intermittent fasting?   I’m going to do a rare thing here and share a limited time replay for you of the master class I did this week. The bottom line is this, some things are terribly wrong for you and some things are absolutely right for you. In this masterclass I gave you a quick self-quiz to decide if it’s right for you, or right for you right now. I share the mounting proven research on the benefits – the long term benefits of fasting – I share my friend and fasting expert with you if you want to go deep on a fasting lifestyle. In the presentation I share the importance of having a specific plan. The timing is on purpose, not accidental. Your exercise during periodic, or during an eating or fasting window during a day should be on purpose as well. Should you resistance train while fasting? Yes, as long as you’re eating window fuels and refuels it with high protein meals. The answer to should you do interval training together with fasting, it depends on the type of fasting you’re doing. Periodic with Calorie Restriction, not so much; using Time Restricted Feeding regularly, with the right timing of the exercise and food yes- making sure that your energy expenditure remains as high as normal. Not effort level, because most things will feel “hard” with little calories or fuel, but if you’re unable to achieve your usual effort level you’re not reaching the same level of fat burning, and you’d be better off exercising low intensity, or changing the HIIT sessions to an eating window. Replay is on demand here for a short time if you’d like to take a deep dive. If you want support for exercise, fasting, and boosting your metabolism, and you’ve got closer to 20 lbs to lose, Fit-U is currently open, and during the month of February I’m offering the Metabolism Mastery in Menopause course (a 699 value) as a bonus, and that’s not all, a Fasting component to help you add this to the exercise, mindset, and recipe & menu suggestions during this 8-week program… that you have access to for good. In this 5 Menopause fitness Questions round up one listener asked a couple questions: When is it recommended to do endurance activities like a Power yoga, a jog or training for a 10K, or a spin bike?  It’s recommended most often, not to do endurance exercise, if you’ve got hormone imbalances. That would be evidenced in weight loss resistance, belly fat, lack of sleep, hot flashes, night sweats. What qualifies as endurance exercise has more to do with length- as suggested. So, a 20 minute power yoga? Go for it. But an hour power yoga session, unless for you it’s a norm and you’re relaxed and getting best sleep and at your ideal weight (aka, it’s working!) I wouldn’t recommend. Long runs ? Which are by nature higher in intensity… if you’re going 75 minutes… or doing even too many 45-minute workouts repeatedly in that “no benefits zone,” you’re going to make cortisol imbalance worse. Fat burning doesn’t usually occur well from those sessions. The Surprise Here’s the irony. A 45-minute walk may result in more fat burning than a 45-minute treadmill (or outdoor) run. It depends on your current status. If you’re balanced, you’re at ideal weight, energy, sleep, fat… then introduce it or continue. Not liking the results you have right now and you are having hot flashes, insomnia, belly fat…. Then you want to not run…. But run from the “more is better” type of workout. Go into the woods and do a 2-hour hike if you’re ready for it, if you need an endurance fix. The longer you go, the lower that intensity better be. Should You Train for Endurance? If you’re training for a 10K you can be smart about it. Less volume, more strategically planned workouts. I use a strategy for myself and clients…. Remember I spent 6 years in Boulder, where everyone tries to train as if they were a world champion. That over training leads to the high frequency of adrenal fatigue and injury you see in midlife women for sure. So I suggest you work with a coach who will help you plan your work and recovery not in a traditional training way. I’ve posted how I work with clients to do this and done for myself to reduce the amount of training I did for Ironman distance triathlons by nearly a third. Spin bike workouts… with a warm up and cool down a good session is about quality not quantity. A 45-60 minute session should be no more than 25 minutes of high intensity. Or it should be a zone 1 to 2 level recovery ride. That’s just like your walk. When you know the affect your exercise has on your hormones you know how to manipulate your weight, energy, and sleep. The same listener asked: Please clarify this point, as a nutrition major many years ago, The strategy was to eat carbohydrates after a muscle pump, also protein… But right after not to wait. You’re not an athlete. If you are, and you’re training for a marathon or a triathlon, you’re biking miles and miles daily, yes, fuel immediately because you’ve got to get that glucose back in your muscle and recover to make that next workout best. If you’re a midlife woman or older, exercising minimally for energy, for fat burning, and support balancing your hormones, you want to wait. Something that gets tricky for one of our listeners, who is also a fitness coach and soon-to-be nutrition coach:  is when a carb is also a protein like nuts/hemp seeds, how do I balance meals? First, let’s talk balanced meals. That looks different for everyone. You want to know that you or your clients do best with high protein, high fat, or high carb- and during midlife that one by the way is rare! A balanced meal for someone may be 33% of protein, fat, and carbs. For another it may be a higher fat moderate protein, low carb for a time – for instance doing a keto diet for reset. For others still it’s high protein, low fat and moderate carbs. Then, there really isn’t a lot of confusion. Yes, foods “double” dip all the time. Salmon is a protein and a health serving of fat. So, at that meal you wouldn’t need to be as consciously adding an oil for instance. And if you were keeping fat moderate, because you’re predisposed to do optimally with high protein- moderate fat and low carbs, this would be even truer. More on Fats & Protein Hemp seeds are a great source of healthy fat, added plant based complete protein. They couldn’t solo as the only source of protein at your meal but they’re an addition. Nuts, are primarily a high source of fat, and offer some protein, for instance nuts and seeds pair well with a plant-based shake like my Plant Power smoothie because the pea protein and the nuts/seeds together create a much higher essential amino acid profile. The recipes I share in the Ultimate Smoothie book are on purpose, not random for this reason. How We Do It – Are you a Fitness Pro or Health Coach? Here’s how we operate at Flipping 50. We don’t count… calories, points, or grams of macros except for protein. There is a Formula for Women to follow to easily look at a meal and say… number of servings of carbs? Number of servings of fat? Right amount of protein? And if you follow it you may be counting your hemp hearts or salmon as sources of fat, and of protein, but you won’t back yourself into a corner and have too little protein, the worst mistake a women who wants to hold onto lean muscle can make. For more information about becoming a Flipping 50 Fitness Specialist I’ll link in the show notes. You’ve got great questions that go deeper than RDAs and my Plate ever did or will. We’ve got to combat programs that are still suggesting if you’re going to have wine you just reduce your calories elsewhere in the day… and ignore what the calories you consume do to your hormones. And you can do it all providing information, and asking the right questions, within your scope of practice if you’re not a Registered Dietitian or operating in Colorado or California where those calling themselves nutritionists can say just about anything. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Kelly: Hello Cabral Team,Hope all is well with you ! I'm Just wondering if you take on any mentors or accept students into to integrative learning programs who are not practitioners. Listening to your podcast are fuelling my fire/passion for proactive and preventative health. I love all the facets of being human, mind body and soul but also the interactions within every living thing on this earth. I am often overwhelmed on where to begin, being pulled into many directions because well everything is so diverse. In hopes to create a solid foundation, with someone whose ethos I can jive with and have come to respect in great awww. I thought maybe I could start here, put it out there and see if you offer any training or mentorships programs…. or maybe point out a good place to dig my first step into the ground and gain some traction to transform my inner passion into out outside world.Keep on being brilliant and humble! your open mindedness, depth of knowledge and emotional intelligence and that simple love of sharing with others is something special... One of a GREAT kind in my eyes... But ehhh that only my perspective.Shine On Kelly Genia: Hi Dr. Cabral. I am a level 1 student and enjoying your IHP Study Program immensely. You are so thorough. Love the details. Spending a lot of time on Module 4 because the whole hormone, female, nervous system - HORMONES - all speaks to me. I had adrenal fatigue and thank gd did the work to feel better via great nutrition and pacing myself with a yoga practice - kundalini that gave me a calm ritual to practice while I was gaining my strength back. I have so much to share but fast forward... in 2017 I went forty obgyn pap smear and found a cyst on left ovary.... treatments, surgery and I'm BRCA 1. Very onto of my game and doing the work. Thank gd over and over again i'm feeling great and moving on... teach yoga, healing and now have more info to share and teach. I want to do the detox and tests. I am writing here because I need more specific guidance. I don't think your IHP team on FB are comfortable to answer my questions. Waiting for support to work with. Should I do the Thyroid Adrenal Hormone test and 21 day detox? I eat pretty clean and juice and smoothie daily. Love your protocols. I do need more guidance, though to keep clean and toxic free and maintain my health. Thank you so much. I love being your student. Forever grateful to you, your vision and team of shining lights. xo Darrel: Hey Dr Cabral. I watched the docu film "The Game Changers" recently and it espoused the virtues of a plant based vegan diet over a meat based one. I know you went over most of this several times on your podcast and I'm most grateful for that. However, I don't know if there was an agenda but they were pretty convincing in their arguments that a vegan lifestyle has no drawbacks in strength, endurance and actually boosts sexual performance (erections) & testosterone levels. Can you say if all this is true and if it's recommended for a vata body type to go vegan plant based? Is it true the Meat industry paid athletes, film industry and doctors to advertize their products and tried to present their own dubious research that meat is best and plant based diet is weaker? As always keep up great work. Christian: Good evening Doctor Cabral. "The Game Chanhers" documentary just debuted on Netflix and it refuted a lot of myths I believed. But you're my go-to source to confirm these things. Growing up we heard soy increases estrogen levels in men but they claim soy merely has phytoestrogens, compounds that look like estrogens but can actually have the opposite effect, blocking some of our bodies' estrogen receptors and preventing real dietary sources of estrogen from taking hold. They went on saying the foods that contain estrogen are really chicken, eggs, dairy which can have a significant impact on our hormone level. Is there any truth to all this or is there some very convincing agenda? For example could I do soy protein shakes now without worrying about testosterone? Sorry for long question. Thanks for everything, great show! Malinda: I just had my second baby, she’s 7 months now and I’m 37 years old. I noticed in the past month my skin has gotten very dry and scaly. I was anemic while I was pregnant and took iron supplements, which I currently am taking now. Also my thyroid was just shy of the lowest normal range, which my midwife said wasn’t low enough to be a concern. I take Vit C, Zinc, Calm magnesium, liquid Folvic minerals, chlorella and algae DHA . My iron supplement (NaturesPlus Hema-Plex, Sustained Release - 85 mg Elemental Iron, 30 Vegetarian Tablets) has many other vitamins and minerals as well as several B- Vitamins. Would one of your B-Complex supplements help my dry skin?I adding the DHA and extra flax and chia seeds in my diet, still dry skin. I added liquid Iodine that helped a little but still dry. My question is which of your supplements can I get right now that would help support dry skin for someone who’s body is stressed out from the demands of nursing 24/7 and interrupted sleep? Also, would a LAB test be recommend, which one would be the best as doing all of them is a bit too much for my wallet? Are you still running a lab sale? PS. Some say soy is heart-healthy. Others consider it a food that is a perfect protein, making it an ideal meat substitute. Dr. Anthony Jay has a different perspective. He suggests that soy is problematic. Anthony has a Ph.D. in biochemistry and works at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also the author of “Estrogeneration.” He describes soy as an “estrogenic” food, meaning that it acts like estrogen in our bodies, which can lead to dysfunction and a number of ailments. In today’s episode, Anthony explains why there is so much conflicting information on soy and how to make sense of it all. He makes clear why we should care, guides us on how much—or rather, how little—we should consume, and describes in detail the cumulative effects of soy on our health. Mycoestrogen- mold products increase estrogen, you will find it in a lot of grains here in america. Check if you house has mold , black mold is extremely toxic. In America we don’t regulate the  mycoestrogens in our food but Europe does. What they feed cattle in America is terrible. The Causes of High Estrogenic Body Fat Deposition + What They Don’t Tell You About Performance Enhancement w/Dr George Touliatos

With many advancements happening in technology, the collective health of society continues to regress due to engineered food, lack of exercise and the lack of knowledge about internal systems. What are the biggest trends we are noticing in this wave? I discuss this with doctor, author and medical prevention expert George Touliatos and also go into detail about performance enhancement in sports. Three Takeaways Passing the test doesn’t mean you’re clean. The life of a particular substance is due to factors like BMI, metabolism and hydration. Many doctors are teaching about external health factors first because they don’t understand the internal.   Dr. George gave a background of his career and how he aimed to combine his interest in sports with his medical expertise. He mainly deals with patients who use anabolic steroids, consulting on medical prevention so that they can take them in a healthier way and reduce side effects. “It’s not about doses, it’s about lifestyle and how you use the stuff.” Next, I asked George how popular the use of anabolic steroids is in Europe. He said during summer the numbers jump to about 50% because people want to be leaner for beach weather. We went onto discuss the issue of high estrogenic body fat disposition that’s become more common in men over the last two decades. George attributes this issue to the fact that people are just not as active as they used to be and the fact that food is engineered. This has also contributed to the drastic drop in sperm count across the world. We also discussed the state of performance enhancement in sports and the common misconception that doping tests provide 100% accuracy. In reality, athletes have found ways to work around the tests, especially at the highest levels where the stakes are high. Dr George also went into detail about the different factors that make it possible for people to cheat the system. The biggest reasons people are going to be in need of HRT is exercise, diet and the lack of internal knowledge. Most people struggling with issues like estrogenic body fat won’t get the help they need because medical professions aren’t knowledgeable enough about it. An individual can control this by learning as much as they can about their own internal health.   Guest Bio Dr. Touliatos is an author, expert and scientific advisor to MuscleMag and Muscular Development Greek editions. Lifestyle Tips to Increase Testosterone Naturally, Part 3 (Breather Episode with Brad)

(Breather) Last week we talked about optimizing testosterone through the right kind of exercise and specifying your diet to include superfoods (organ meats, pastured eggs, SMASH fish, and monounsaturated fats like avocado and coconut). But how do you factor in carbohydrates in a healthy way? How much should you eat a day, and when? My suggestion is: *honor your natural appetite.* If you are craving carbs, then just eat some carbs! Just be careful about what becomes a habit (see the lessons I learned from my Fatty Popcorn Boy ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/07/05/fpb/ ) saga). Also, Ben Greenfield ( https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/podcast/fitness-podcasts/doubling-your-testosterone-levels/ ) recommends that you restock glycogen and optimize your hormones with nightly carb refeeds. Think of it as a “Best of both worlds” scenario - you bank lots of fasting hours and eat mostly keto meals, but then you can enjoy family time and liberal carb intake (100-150 grams, even up to 200 grams!), which ensures restocked glycogen and gets insulin to move adaptive hormones into receptor sites. In fact, these feast and famine cycles are gaining popularity, which is funny since Art DeVany said back in 2006, right out of the inception of the ancestral health movement, that, “We are most human when we don’t eat.” Interestingly, prolonged fasting drops testosterone and HGH (human growth hormone), but refeeds actually spike it higher. Now that we’ve covered testosterone boosting tips like exercise, sleep, and diet, it’s time to discuss supplements. If you’ve already done a little research on this subject, then you already know that there are tons of supplements out there that all pretty much claim to be magical testosterone boosters. But are any of them actually effective? That’s why I’m proud to stand behind my MOFO supplement ( https://ancestralsupplements.com/mofo ). Made of desiccated and dried organ meats, this supplement is basically like a meal (or a snack) in pill form, because it’s made up of the most-nutrient dense organ meats. MOFO is so effective because we use the specific organs that have cofactors and molecular bio directors (a fancy way of saying the chemical agents contained naturally in animal organs are believed to heal the same target organs in your body). A traditional physician may balk at the idea, but in reality, people, like the Native Americans and Chinese, have used organ meats as a healing modality for centuries. *Natural/Herbal Supplements to try:* * *Magnesium and Zinc* (but only if you are exercising and sweating heavily). * *Vitamin D:* Most of us are deficient in magnesium and Vitamin D. Make sure you’re getting enough sun exposure! * *Boron* * *Creatine:* One of the most proven supplements ever for muscle building and recovery, it’s also good for older athletes. Since you can’t absorb too much at one time, just mix a little in water - take 5g per day, but in two doses of 2.5g. * *Cacao powder:* You can also eat cacao nibs, or add some cacao powder into your morning coffee. Or, try making a cup of creamy hot chocolate using my favorite cacao powder from Organifi ( https://www.organifishop.com/products/organifi-gold-hot-chocolate?rfsn=2977790.19ceb&utm_campaign=goldchocoaff&utm_medium=email&utm_source=affiliate ). * *Maca root/maca powder* * *Longjack* * *Fenugreek* * *Pycnogenol (pine bark)* * *Tribulus* *Estrogenic Influences to avoid:* * *Plastic* bottles and food containers. * *Soy, corn,* and *flaxseed* contain 100 times more estrogen than any other foods. * *All-natural skincare* (sunscreen) and *eco home cleaners.* * *Parabens, phthalates,* and *PCBs:* Found in shampoos and conditioners, these are easily absorbed into the body and unfavorably affect testosterone/estrogen ratios. I personally like to use Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products for home and Dr. Bronner’s soap for personal care - classic, affordable, easy to find, and most importantly, a high quality, clean product that actually works and doesn’t disrupt your hormones. Yes, there are a lot of toxic products out there, but fortunately there are many companies that do care about your health, so you just have to do a little research to find which option works best for you. *TIMESTAMPS:* Remember that sleep, strength training, and diet are important for supporting testosterone. [03:10] Where do carbohydrates fit into the picture? [04:11] If you're trying to drop excess body fat, the most simple and direct way there is to minimize insulin production in the diet and upregulate fat burning accordingly. [08:11] Honor your natural appetite. [10:19] Are supplements good for you? MOFO supplements have natural organ meats in them that target specific organs.  [13:22] Magnesium and zinc are important and most of us are deficient in this. [16:44] Vitamin D is a huge cancer risk factor. You must have exposure to the sun. [18:35] Creatine is a bodybuilding supplement but not just for bodybuilders. [22:55] Brad talks about other supplements that can support your testosterone level. [24:37] Estrogenic influences are in our environment. The worst are the plastics that touch your drink.
