ILM Immersive & Marvel Studios is releasing What If...?: An Immersive Story exclusively on Apple Vision Pro tomorrow, and I had a chance to take an early look and speak with producer and executive producer Shereif Fattouh as well as technical art director Indira Guerrieri about the process of creating this experience. It's mostly an immersive story with light interactions, but you can't actually die and so it's more about immersing yourself into these worlds with first-person embodiment and exploring around 10 different gesture-based interactions in nearly 50 different interactive moments across the 40 to 45-minute experience. There's also some disembodied moments where you're watching 3D movie cinematics on shards of glass floating in the environment, and so they're also really leaning into how good 3D movies look on the Apple Vision Pro within this experience. Overall, it's blending lots of elements together that feels like something new and a new genre of immersive storytelling that's building upon existing IP, and giving new opportunities to engage with these character's stories as well as their worlds. This is also the first Unreal Engine experience releasing on the Apple Vision Pro store, and so Fattouh told me that ILM Immersive has been making private modifications to get things working. There are features like mixed reality passthrough that are not available yet in Unreal Engine 5.4 yet. Agile Lens' Alex Coulombe told me, "The Epic Games XR team is small so I would I err on the side of assuming no major Vision Pro updates coming soon from Epic. To have the current features working it still requires a source build of Unreal Engine 5.4 (the Epic Games Launcher doesn't work) and current features include fully immersive mode, hand tracking / gesture recognition, forward and deferred rendering." So hopefully we'll get more on this soon from Epic Games, but at least we know it's possible and we'll start to see more Unreal Engine experiences on the Apple Vision Pro soon. Be sure to check out the transcript below for more information, and also don't miss my episode featuring my talk on an Elemental Theory of Presence, Experiential Design, and Immersive Storytelling, as well as my previous 480+ episodes on the topic of immersive storytelling over the past decade including previous coverage on Cycles, Myth: A Frozen Tale, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, and a conversation with John Gaeta about ILMxLab's The Holo-Cinema from Sundance New Frontier 2016. Replay of an interview originally published in September 2022:Today's conversation is a continuation of my discussion with Matt Miesnieks about LivingCities. Joining us for part 2 are co-founders John Gaeta and Dennis Crowley.John won an Oscar for his visual effects work on The Matrix movies, and after many additional creative and visual effects projects, including Speed Racer, he went on to co-found ILMxLAB as part of Lucusfilm. He then served as the SVP of Creative Strategy at Magic Leap before returning to work on the latest installment of The Matrix franchise.Dennis Crowley was the co-founder and CEO of location intelligence apps, Dodgeball and Foursquare. Both companies focused on using mobile phones to connect people to each other in the real world. Dodgeball was sold to Google in 2005 and Foursquare is still thriving today as a location intelligence provider.John and Dennis have joined Matt at LivingCities to explore new ways of blending the virtual and real worlds. But as Matt explains, they are not making a game; the bigger opportunity is in social engagement and communication. They go on to discuss the hard problems they are excited to solve and provide some hints at new forms of social expression in a 3D spatial environment. They discuss the tradeoffs of different technology choices as well as their ambitions, and what they want to do differently or better compared to their previous entrepreneurial experiences. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com, and become a patron at patreon.com/theARshow.

Michael Cooper works for the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative, and he was attending the XR Access Symposium to learn more about the existing XR accessibility efforts but also to moderate a break-out session about captions in XR. One of Cooper's big takeaways is that there is no magical, one-size-fits-all solution to captioning in XR because people have different needs, different preferences, and different contexts that means that there is a need for frameworks to help make captions easily customizable. There are a lot of potential customizable options for spatial captions that include distance from the speaker, text size, text color, weight, layout, the size of the box, whether or not they have transparent boxes, preventing occlusion of objects by the captions, whether it moves with the speaker or not, and how to handle off-screen speakers. Gallaudet University's Christian Vogler warned XR Access participants about the dangers of doing a one-to-one translation for how captions are handled in 2D into how they're handled in 3D since there different modalities like haptics that could help reduce information overload. One of the demos that was being shown at the XR Access Symposium implemented a wide range of these different spatial caption options, and so there is a need to develop an framework for the different game engines and the open web with WebXR as well as an opportunity at the platform level like with the Apple Vision Pro or Meta Quest ecosystem to implement a captioning framework. Cooper told me in this interview, "I do think that we need design guidance. There are a lot of good ways to do captions in XR. There are some bad ways to do it, and so we need people to know about that. Going down the road, I think that we are going to need to develop semantic formats for the captions and for the objects that they represent. So there's a lot of excitement about that. But again, there's a big sense of caution that the space is so early that we don't want to overstandardize. And as a person who works for a standards organization, that's a big takeaway that I have to take." It's again worth bringing up what Khronos Group President Neil Trevett told to me about the process of standardization, “The number one golden rule of standardization is don't do R&D by standardization committee… Until we have multiple folks doing the awesome necessary work of Darwinian experimentation, until we have multiple examples of a needed technology and everyone is agreeing that it's needed and how we would do it, but we're just doing it in annoyingly different ways. That's the point at which standardization can help.” It's still very early days for this type of Darwinian experimentation with Owlchemy Labs' innovations of captioning starting with Vacation Simulator in October 2019 as well as the captioning experiments and accessibility features by ILM Immersive (formerly ILMxLAB) within Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge. The live captioning within social VR platform of AltSpaceVR was also pretty groundbreaking (RIP AltSpaceVR), and VRChat has had a number of Speech-to-Text implementations including ones that can be integrated into an avatar including VRCstt (and their RabidCrab's TTS Patreon), VRCWizard's TTS-Voice-Wizard, and VRC STT System. There were also a number of unofficial, community-made accessibility mods before VRChat's Easy Anti-Cheat change eliminated all quality-of-life mods such as VRC-CC and VRC Live Captions Mod. There have also been a number of different strategies within 360 videos over the years that would burn in captions at either 1, 2, or 3 different locations. The more locations the captions, then more ability one has to to look around without missing any action within the environment and still be able to read the captions. At Laval Virtual 2023, I saw some integrations of OpenAI's Whisper to do live transcription and captioning as they were feeding text into ChatGPT 3.5.

On this episode of 8111, Maggie Oh. Maggie was an only child and grew up in Chicago. She was always interested in animation from an early age, thanks in part to Batman: The Animated Series. She attended MIT and studied computer science and electrical engineering as an undergrad. But she also took illustration, drawing and painting courses at MassArt. Maggie went to SIGGRAPH for the first time though a co-op project for the MIT Media Lab. After school she worked as an interactive programmer at a web company in Boston. She then decided to enroll at art school to earn an MFA. But she landed a Summer internship at Pixar and decided to drop out of art school to continue to work in industry and study independently online and though professional work. In October 2003 Maggie landed a job at ILM. She started in render support working in the trailer and had an interesting run in with a family of raccoons working the graveyard shift. She later worked as a technical director on films including; Star Wars: Episode III, Evan Almighty, Chicken Little 3D, Lions for Lambs, Lemony Snicket, Pirates of the Caribbean, and many others. She also worked developing the HDR pipeline. In 2008 Maggie left to work at the California Academy of Sciences to work on their first planetarium show. She then moved over to doing freelancing for various visual effects companies including Polygon, Cafe FX, Spy Post, and then Image Movers Digital. Then Maggie went to 343 Industries to work on Halo 4 & 5 followed by time at Microsoft helping develop the HoloLens. From there she spent a year at NVIDIA and then returned to ILM for a few years working with the ILMxLAB. Today Maggie is working at Google alongside Dan Goldman on Project Starline. Maggie is brilliant. Her career journey is a who's who of high-end technology. Her love of working in the space where art meets engineering has guided her choices. It was great fun to chat and hear about her story.

Fangirls Going Rogue: Star Wars Conversation from a Female POV
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is a Virtual Reality experience coming to the Downtown Disney® District at the Disneyland® Resort in Anaheim, California on Sunday, November 21, 2021 and running through January 5, 2022. This is a free experience that expands the location of Batuu beyond the confines of Black Spire Outpost. The experience features the character Seezelslak, voiced by Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live, Star Wars Resistance). Seezeslak is an Azumel bartender who runs a cantina in competition with Oga's cantina and isn't nearly as shy. Recently, Sarah Woloski and Tricia Barr attended a Press Conference put on by ILMxLAB where we learned some fun behind-the-scenes tidbits about this experience. In addition to Moynihan, the press conference includes ILMxLab's producer Alyssa Finley and was moderated by Holly Frey of Stuff You Missed in History and Full of Sith podcasts. Even if you can't visit the experience, the panel is informative and their enthusiasm to share how the team built out the virtual world around Black Spire Outpost is really insightful. From Disney Parks: Meta Quest and ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm's award-winning immersive entertainment studio, are presenting a special Quest 2 preview of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge coming to the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort, Nov. 21, 2021 – Jan. 5, 2022. This preview version of ILMxLAB's virtual reality experience expands the world of Batuu like never before! Once inside the Quest 2 headset, you'll be immersed within sweeping 360 views of the Star Wars galaxy. The adventure takes place on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu, as depicted in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the immersive epic lands at Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The story features both new and iconic characters from the Star Wars galaxy. Gameplay was designed for a variety of players – from Star Wars fans to VR gamers – at home on Quest 2. The free experience is available from noon to 8pm daily. For more information visit Disney Parks Blog. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR LATEST EPISODE OF FANGIRLS GOING ROGUE: Why We Love Ted Lasso. The new Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge VR experience releases today, and I had a chance to play through it and talk to a couple of the creators from ILMxLab about their latest steps towards their vision of 'storyliving.' It represents a lot of progress from their initial three chapters of Vadar Immortal, but there's certainly a long ways to go to be live fully into this vision of storyliving. Galaxy's Edge does have a lot more sophisticated gameplay with smarter AI enemies, you have more agency to move around during the cinematic cut scenes with more aspects of open-world exploration, and the pacing of the story elements with interactive exploration has also evolved quite a bit as well.
In this episode, we explore the legendary world of StarWars, the future of story-telling using XR and learn the secrets of working in Lucas Film and Disney from a seasoned veteran of the industry, Chief Executive of ILMxLAB, Vicki Dobbs Beck What is field of view? This week's Disney News on Parade covers three stories around Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. First, it explores a new cantina being introduced in a virtual game by ILMXLAB. Next we look at changes to the boarding pass policy to Rise of the Resistance. Episode I of the groundbreaking Vader Immortal VR game from ILMxLAB set up the story. Now, Episode II sends you on the Bright Star quest - after being trained to use the Force. On today's episode of the show, we'll get into a non-spoiler review of Vader Immortal: Episode II, which includes a comparison of the installment not only to the Episode I predecessor, but also to the LEGO Star Wars games (yes, really - although, spoiler alert, the VR version is way cooler than the LEGO Star Wars version in terms of the ability I'm talking about on the show). Not only will we be talking about the gameplay/story mode, but we'll also talk about the enhancements to the Lightsaber Dojo as well. Punch it! ***I'm listener supported! When the coronavirus pandemic struck, production on live action movies and television shut down. Thankfully, season 2 of The Mandalorian had already finished principal photography, so it could proceed on schedule for its October 2020 debut. In the meantime, we've heard that Star Wars animation is also moving full steam ahead, even though we don't know many details about that (yet). And there's another type of storytelling that's also moving forward... or should we say "storyLIVING"? That's the word used by ILMxLAB's Executive-in-Charge Vicki Dobbs Beck, referring to the idea that "you’re inside a world making consequential choices that drive your experience forward." In other words, virtual reality. On today's show, we'll talk about ILMxLAB's first title, Vader Immortal, getting a wider release; and the first sneak preview of their second VR title, Tales From the Galaxy's Edge. More than 40 hospitals, and 17,500 cards have been created so far. Disney has posted 16 different designs on the VoluntEARS Thank You Card webpage which employees can access. Some of the designs included Black Panther, Aladdin, Star Wars, and more. The cards will mail out this week. – https://www.micechat.com/260735-disneyland-update-unrest-reopenings-poll-results-reader-photos/ As if the pandemic wasn’t enough going on already, protests have begun happening around the country to put a light on racial inequality in the US. The Walt Disney Company this week posted support on every online platform and sent a letter out to all the employees sharing their sympathy and support. The Hawaiian Cheeseburger from the Tangaroa Terrace at the Disneyland Hotel recipe has hit the internet. Daniel, a contestant on The Price is Right, hosted by Drew Carey, greeted the host with excitement stating “You’re Drew Carey… you were on Superstar Limo in Disney California Adventure, the greatest thing ever!” For those who don’t remember, Superstar Limo was the attraction that was replaced by Monsters, Inc in DCA. The original attraction was considered lackluster and “non-Disney” by a lot of fans when DCA first opened. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/05/excited-fan-gives-shout-out-to-ex-disney-california-adventure-attraction-superstar-limo-whilst-appearing-on-the-price-is-right/ On May 30th, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge turned one year old! Somehow it has already been a year since the new land opened to guests and Star Wars fans. The land received mixed reactions at opening, but with tweaks and the opening of Rise of the Resistance, the area has seem to found it’s groove with guests. – https://twitter.com/Disneyland/status/1266843843934093313 Discussion Topic: Peter Pan’s Flight: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Pan%27s_Flight Disney Wikia: https://disneyparks.fandom.com/wiki/Peter_Pan%27s_Flight_(Disneyland_Park) Finding Mickey: http://findingmickey.squarespace.com/hidden-mickeys-disneyland/fantasyland/2532531 Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Toad%27s_Wild_Ride Disney Parks Blog: https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2018/09/look-closer-mr-toads-wild-ride-at-disneyland-park/ Yesterland: https://www.yesterland.com/mrtoad.html Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/63631877@N00/4624670394

This week on the Tech Cat Show, the Road To The Infinity Festival of Hollywood, we chat with Vicki Dobbs Beck, who is the Executive in Charge of ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm’s immersive entertainment studio. Based in San Francisco, Vicki’s team is pioneering a new era of interactive storytelling through virtual and mixed reality experiences. With Vader Immortal Episode 1, which has made most of the top ‘game’ lists to purchase on the Oculus Quest, a non-tethered VR headset, the creation of a new type of content experience has been born. And now with Episode 2 launching, Vicki shares with us how the combination of great storytelling and technology comes together to create landmark work. Join us on The Tech Cat Show as we dig into storyworlds with Vicki Dobbs Beck, from ILMxLAB.
At age 12, Vicki Dobbs Beck started her own business with her mom, selling flowers at Seattle market — and she’s been combining creativity with commerce ever since. After leaving Stanford University Graduate School of Business, she got a job at Industrial Light and Magic and became Executive in Charge of ILMxLAB in 2016. In this podcast, recorded at THU, Vicki tells Chris about the incredible virtual reality projects she’s overseen at ILMxLAB, including Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning Flesh and Sand (Carne y arena) and Oculus Quest launch title Vader Immortal. Through her role, Vicki has unprecedented insight into the business side of virtual experiences, and you’ll find out everything from how to secure funding for VR ideas to the practicalities of writing scripts for interactive experiences.
This month I had the pleasure of checking out American Contemporary Ballet's take on The Nutcracker Suite -- the perennial holiday favorite -- which they frame with an immersive twist. Interested in what I saw, and in the company's approach to using immersive techniques for a more traditionally tuned audience, I caught up with ACB's Artistic Director and Choreographer Lincoln Jones. Plus: word on your chance to check out ILMxLAB's Lightsaber Dojo without needing an Oculus Quest of your own.
How did we get so lucky? Last week we sat down with Ben Snow (director of 'Vader Immortal'), Alyssa Finley (producer Ep. II and III), and John Nguyen (design director, Ep. III) of the ILMxLAB and Colum Slevin head of media in the AR/VR experiences team at Oculus to talk about Vader Immortal Episode III, the final chapter of the series. We dig into what the team has learned across the arc of three episodes, and so much more. Plus: two Noah rants. Woof. Show Notes - My review of Vader Immortal Episode III - Will Cherry's review of The Under Presents - Our bonus episode with Edward Saatchi of Fable Studio on Virtual Beings - And Ari Herstand's article about how California's new freelance laws are going to hurt independent musicians.

We talked about it a few months back when it was first demoed at this year's VR packed GDC, but now ILMxLAB's Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine demo is available to download on Steam for FREE! Like a lot of VR stuff, it turned out to be a somewhat slight experience, but it's no less impressive than any of the other things Patrick and Iain have tried out lately. For the July episode of Hyperspace Theories, our topic of discussion naturally is Star Wars Celebration Europe, held in London on July 15-16, 2016. Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester attended the convention, and Kay caught up on all the excitement with the official livestream from The Star Wars Show and the other great video content shared on the official Star Wars YouTube channel. The show opens with overall reactions to Celebration. In the end Tricia, BJ and Kay agree with the assessment of Graeme McMillan’s article in The Hollywood Reporter that the convention focused on the fans and their engagement with and passion for the franchise, rather than on breaking news or seeking coverage in the entertainment media. One major theme of Celebration, like last year’s convention in Anaheim, was how much Lucasfilm understands and appreciates the importance of the fans to Star Wars’ success. Another interesting theme at Celebration was Lucasfilm’s goal of leading the push into the future of storytelling mediums. Tricia and B.J. both got to experience the ILMxLAB virtual reality short story “Trials on Tatooine.” The interaction between technology and storytelling also played a big part in the panel on STEM Heroes & Heroines of Star Wars that Tricia organized. Discussion moves on to the two tentpoles of Celebration Europe this year. For the upcoming standalone movie Rogue One, the Hyperspace Theories team analyzes the panel, the sizzle reel, and the exhibit of costumes on the show floor. For Star Wars Rebels, the big news is the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the iconic villains of the Star Wars Legends tales, as the featured adversary for the Ghost crew in Season Three. Our last episode covered the 25th anniversary of Heir to the Empire, the novel in which Thrawn was introduced; at Celebration, we learned that author Timothy Zahn also is returning to pen the new novel Thrawn to reintroduce the character’s story leading up to his appearance in Rebels. The show concludes with the Future Filmmakers panel, which was light on information but gave a lot of insight into the directors of the next Star Wars films. Rian Johnson shared a list of classic movies that comprised a “film camp” he held as inspiration for the people working on Episode VIII. Phil Lord and Chris Miller brought both humor and heart, as well as new Han Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich, for their untitled movie. embed You can also listen to Hyperspace Theories at Libsyn or download the show there.
