REPLAY #31: How to Get Motivated to Work When You’re Feeling Blah

Deliberate Freelancer

On today’s show I talk about how sometimes I’m just not feeling it. Sometimes I just feel blah and unmotivated. But, I have client work to do. But, I’m having a hard time kicking my butt into gear. Two interesting reasons I might be feeling blah that I learned about in recent years: One, I learned from my acupuncturist that some people feel blah or out of sorts when seasons change. The past two years, I’ve noticed this feeling as winter turns into spring—which is strange because I’m a much bigger fan of spring than I am of winter—but I feel out of sorts around April. And now, this week, my favorite season, summer, has slowly disappeared as October has arrived. That change of seasons might be causing some of my malaise. Another thing that women should be aware of: When your hormone levels go down, you might feel a little unmotivated and not like yourself. This can happen before or during your menstrual cycle, and for those of us in our 40s, it can happen as we head into menopause. A lot of women start experiencing menopausal symptoms in their 40s, so you might want to talk with your doctor about this. Back to feeling blah. As an employee, you can feel blah and show up to work and go through the motions. Maybe you won’t be that productive that day and not on your game, but you’re there and you’re collecting a paycheck. But as a freelancer and business owner, it’s all about discipline. If you don’t work, you don’t get paid. So, how do you push through that malaise and get to work? First, consider taking the day off and NOT pushing through. It will depend on your schedule, but we should not feel guilty for taking a Mental Health Day. So, if your schedule allows, take the day off and do something fun. Treat yourself. That wasn’t an option for me this past Monday. I had work to do. But I ignored my 7 a.m. alarm and dragged myself out of bed at 8 a.m. I took a shower, which is a morning requirement for me, but I realized I needed a plan to push through my lack of motivation. A plan might not help me feel better, but I needed to work. I started by making myself some tea with caffeine. Then I did a few guided meditations for 15 minutes using the Breathe app. Then I listened to a few fun songs, but I cannot listen to music with lyrics while I’m working, so I turned the music off after a few minutes and dug into my email. I asked people on Twitter what they do when they’re struggling like this. Here’s what some of them said: Sarah Brodsky said: I break up the work into 100-word chunks. After writing each chunk, I watch for a few minutes as a reward. I asked Sarah how she keeps from watching too much TV because I think that would be my challenge, even though I really like this idea, and she said the dread of not getting the work done usually keeps her focused. For me, I think I would either need to set a timer to stop watching TV or stand up the entire time, so I’m just watching 10–15 minutes. Chloe Brooks recommended: Break it into chunks with rewards in between! Give yourself 30 minutes to work on something you’d rather do and then bust out the client work. Chloe tells Siri to set a timer. And her rewards may be as simple as stretching in a different room, taking a quick walk around the block, doing a load of dishes/laundry so it stops bugging her. But sometimes she eats some chocolate or watches an episode of something funny. She’s a fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Bob’s Burgers. Chloe also recommended just moving to a different room of the house, which also works for me and was a good reminder. KiKi L’Italien said: I’ll turn off all notifications, shut my office door, set the Insight timer app for 15-20 minutes, and practice a little deep breathing and purposeful NON-action. It works as a reset! Usually I realize how lucky I am to have the work in front of me and it shifts my mindset. Jackie MacDougall said: I give myself one small task. That’s usually enough to trigger motivation. OR I take the day and get up the next day at 5 a.m. to do it. Sometimes I too would rather take the day off or take the afternoon off and just get up super early the next day. A few more tactics that I use: Time tracking. Time tracking usually keeps me on task. I like breaking up the day into chunks of time and time tracking—for whatever reason—keeps me accountable to myself. For example, if I waste time by playing on social media or I take a long lunch while catching up on “The Voice,” I have to look at my time tracking that I scribbled onto a piece of paper. I don’t like the look of spending 30 minutes on Facebook randomly scrolling in the middle of the day or taking a two-hour lunch when I have work to do. Pick one thing. I choose one thing that I absolute have to do that day and focus on getting it done. Its sounds simple, but the concept is described in detail in the book “Make Time,” which describes how you pick a highlight for your day and then laser focus on getting it done by eliminating all distractions. Pick three things. Michael Hyatt, who wrote the book “Free to Focus,” chooses just three things on his to-do list each day and works solely on those. That’s not possible for all of us every day, but when it is, it’s a way to keep you focused. Zero in on those three things and don’t allow yourself to get sidetracked by anything else. Reach out to people. This helped me feel a little better by Monday afternoon, even though I did it on accident. As an introvert, I like to be alone, so when I’m feeling down, I definitely don’t think immediately, “Hey, I need to be around people. I should call my friends!” But three things happened on Monday that made me realize I needed people interactions: I interviewed an inspiring podcast guest who lifted my spirits. Then, by reaching out to my Twitter community and asking them how they dealt with these feelings, I connected with my network online that knows exactly what it’s like to run a freelance business. And the third thing was my husband offered to take my walk with me that afternoon and we spent an hour walking and talking about non-work stuff. Please know that as freelance business owners, sometimes we’re going to feel unmotivated and severely lacking in discipline. Whether you can take the day off or have to push through those feelings, that’s OK. It’s totally normal to feel like this occasionally. In this episode, Association Chat host KiKi L’Italien interviews Rachel Sheerin, an international keynote speaker and trainer who is dedicated to helping us all grow, sell and thrive. At a time when our world needs new solutions for new problems in every industry, collaborating and working together is more important than ever.  And associations have been doing this by providing the communities and relationships that have led the way on these innovations for years. But with more competition for our time and attention than ever before, it takes a more thoughtful approach to sell people on the idea of the work that goes into a community and the value that goes in and out of it.  This week we’re taking a look at community and how to best position it as a benefit an opportunity so that members and prospective members see the value in their engagement – whether it be as a volunteer, Board member, chapter member, or something else entirely!  Recently named Speaker of the Year by NACE and featured in Inc Magazine, Rachel's high-energy keynotes and programs have served conference and annual meeting audiences from Spain to Seattle, and will soon be seen on the TEDx stage! Rachel's keynotes and training have been raved about by a lot of awesome associations like MPI, ESPA, WRPA and more, and her corporate clients – folks like The Ritz Carlton, Hilton, Berkshire Hathaway and more. Rachel loves associations - she currently serves as International Director of Education for WIPA, is a long time NACE member and likes her margaritas on the rocks. *This is value for value – if you enjoy the weekly content, community, and special episodes coming from Association Chat, please consider becoming a Patreon patron to help support this effort! How can the philosophies, habits, and models in entrepreneurship catalyze associations? That’s what we’re talking about this week on Association Chat. I’m KiKi L’Italien, your host at kikilitalien.com. If you are a fan, please do me a favor. Like and subscribe. When we look at associations, a lot of times we get bogged down by thinking of them as these unwieldy, rigid organizations. We can look at entrepreneurs, large innovative companies, and the startup culture and begin to wonder about the future for associations and maybe even wonder if and how to let some of those more entrepreneurial ideas trickle in. Maybe it’s incubators, or maybe it’s design thinking, or product development. Maybe it’s ideas. Whatever it is, we want to make our associations as strong and effective as possible. But it’s not just effectiveness or efficiency we want, right? We actually want to move from being the slow, less creative, more traditional institutions to being transformative in how our members and the world think about or use our information. We’re looking at entrepreneurship because we want to transform the way we think or do things institutionally. So what is it about entrepreneurship that really make that difference? For me, it’s a devotion to curiosity and not settling for the status quo, looking for creative ways to better connect and lead our industries, our members, and to move beyond relevance into excellence. To explore this more, this week I’m visiting with the Associations Catalyzing Entrepreneurship group in Washington, DC, and the founder of ACE  Meena Dayak.

COULD ASSOCIATIONS MAKE BETTER DECISIONS WITH SWARM AI? | Dr. Louis Rosenberg guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien

What if you could harness all the best wisdom - knowledge, experience, intuition - from a group of people and use it to make extremely accurate decisions and predictions? Would that be valuable for you? If the answer is yes, you must watch this interview.  A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from my friend Adrian Segar, who literally wrote the book on unconferences, discussing the wisdom of crowds sharing why an unconference would always be better than a conference designed using a conference curator, or one expert, who helped craft a vision for what a conference should be. And it got me thinking about an interesting option... And that option came from a segment I watched in an episode of the new Amazon Prime Video docuseries - it was just released February 22 - called This Giant Beast That is the Global Economy. I remembered one segment, in particular, featuring a researcher talking with the host, Kal Penn, about collective intelligence, using Swarm AI technology, that could harness all the best wisdom from a group of people and make extremely accurate decisions. And I wondered could this technology be used to make better conferences? Or, for associations of every industry facing tremendous change and disruption, could Swarm AI or hive intelligence help make strategic decisions about an organization’s mission? Anyone who sees value in small data, big data, qualitative and quantitative research, any leader who makes big decisions for a group of people needs to hear about our topic. So I reached out to the researcher and his company! Dr. Louis Rosenberg received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees from Stanford and his doctoral work focused on robotics, virtual reality, and human-computer interaction. How Comfortable Are You With Challenging the Status Quo? Many of us might think we are pretty good at testing our assumptions, but my guest for this episode is masterful at it. In fact, she’s a successful social entrepreneur [precisely because she’s so good at disruption. And she even wrote a book to help us all get better at “radically challenging the status quo,” too, called Disrupt-Her (like disruptor...get it?) Here’s what Fast Company said about her: “Miki Agrawal brings the wit and provocation of a performance artist to marketing products that have historically been associated with shame — and she’s catalyzed a movement along the way.” Please enjoy this conversation with Miki!

CURIOSITY, COMMUNITY, and DEEPER CONNECTION | Andrew Horn Guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien How do You Avoid Auto-Piloting Your Life?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As you begin your day in whatever your morning routine looks like, I want you to think about what life would look like if you weren’t operating out of fear and opted instead to move in a more purposeful direction. One with intent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Would you hide from meeting people or get excited about the chance to learn about someone else’s experience? Would you be in a rush to make the numbers or opt instead for building a relationship? From the time we are born, so many of us seem to witness a loss in our curiosity about ourselves, others, and in the world around us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why is that? Can we change it? If so, how?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For this interview, I talk with the man who has been called "the Dale Carnegie for the Digital Age," Andrew Horn. “You’re only two clicks away from uncovering a lie,” is the mantra Phil Riggins, founder of the Brand & Reputation Collective (the BRC) in the UK, now lives by. Is it the mantra for the age we live in? The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals that trust has changed profoundly in the past year—people have shifted their trust to the relationships within their control, most notably their employers. Globally, 75 percent of people trust “my employer” to do what is right, significantly more than NGOs (57 percent), business (56 percent) and media (47 percent). Can your organization optimize for trust? Let's find out how Gary LaBranche, Matthew D'Uva, and Nick Parker's organizations do it on this episode! How do association leaders and communications experts avoid creating a crisis in times of “radical uncertainty” and change? I talk with association executives and a podcast producer in the Midwest about navigating these treacherous waters. Episode #90 Communication Challenges in the Age of "Fake News" Fear runs rampant as many citizens carry eroding trust in the internet as well as the foundations of democracy, 2019 has already witnessed a historic government shutdown, ongoing claims from the President of the United States that "the media is the enemy of the people", and in the midst of it all, we must still communicate with our Board, members, the media, and the public. #fakenews #governmentshutdown #communications #associations #assnchat #FightFakeNews What is Association Chat? How can the power of AI work as a tool to boost existing products and services and can it help us reimagine the membership experience? We explore this heady topic with special guest Ron Moen who is the CIO at CHEST. Ron and his team serve at the intersection of people, process, and technology - in the premier innovative organization for chest medicine professionals around the world. CHEST constituents and staff are champions for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the lungs (www.chestnet.org). CHEST's 35,000 sq ft Innovation and Simulation Center is world renowned, and unique among medical societies (www.chestmeetingcenter.com). Ron is constantly connecting – people to people, technology to technology, and people to technology – in support of mission. Ron's Strengthsfinder talents are Ideation, Includer, Maximizer, Positivity and WOO. Questions You just came back from a conference that you were telling me about that wasn’t targeting association CIOs, but was all about a topic that I’d think every CIO (or assn exec of any kind) would be interested in...could you talk to me a little bit more about that? Non-dues revenue is a popular topic in our world of associations. What kind of ideas inspired by tech capabilities are you having these days about how your org (or others) might leverage AI, ML, or data analytics in the non-dues revenue realm? [In other words and using a dated reference, “Show me the money!”] What about buying and selling data? I know you recently had a chance to attend the DataMoney Conference in New York, which is not a conference targeting association execs, but definitely an important conference for associations who have such a fountain of data they are working with...any big lessons from the conference in regards to buying and selling data in a smart “good guy” kinda way? :) What are some of the questions association executives should be asking about their organization’s use of AI and data analytics? What about technology advancing faster than our understanding of it and the ethical issues that arise? What are some of the danger zones for mixing tech like machine learning with data management that is less than safe? Are there other ethical areas involving tech association execs should think about? What websites, books, podcasts, magazines, people do you regularly check-in with to make sure you stay on top of those things you care about the most? What’s the best way for people to connect with you about speaking or anything else? About our guest: Eric Kuhn is a successful entrepreneur sitting at the intersection of media, entertainment and technology. Most recently he helped start and run Layer3 TV, a next-generation cable provider that sold to T-Mobile.  Previously Eric was Hollywood’s first “social media agent” at United Talent Agency where he represented some of the industry’s top writers, directors, actors and producers on investments, digital strategy and social media. In 2009 Eric became CNN’s Audience Interaction Producer, running social media and producing some of the first television programs that integrated digital platforms. He also is responsible for launching the National Basketball Association and CBS News on social media. Passionate about the arts, this season he produced his first Broadway show: Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song. He also sits on the boards of Lincoln Center Theater and SeriesFest (an award-winning festival dedicated to showcasing episodic storytelling from around the world). Questions: What are you the most excited about in tech these days (that you can talk about) + why? What kind of impact might this have on associations and nonprofits? You and some of your collaborators have worked on projects with an intention to include social impact elements.  How do you think association leaders might consider incorporating more social impact projects into their own meetings and events? Any words of advice? During your career, you’ve helped some of the entertainment industry’s biggest names better represent themselves and connect using technology. What can an association executive do today to raise their profile and stand out using social media in a noisy and saturated digital landscape? You’ve been called the “Father of Influencers” - what do you think most people get wrong about influencer marketing? What are some major mistakes you’ve seen people make with their social media use that that Association Chat viewers should avoid at all costs? Another great talent of yours is navigating the business of technology. Based on your own experience, what areas of technological growth should leaders be paying special attention to these days? You are always on the go, always traveling, always working, and yet you stay at the forefront of many different things: Technology, business, theater, ...what have you had to sacrifice time-wise in order to make it all work? What websites, books, podcasts, magazines, people do you regularly check-in with to make sure you stay on top of those things you care about the most? Why do women in particular resist "marketing" themselves at work? I notice women being modest on their resumes/cover letters (e.g., "worked on team that created" rather than "created"). What advice would you give a woman who thinks she's not truthful or bragging when speaking boldly? Can personal aspects enhance the professional brand? Should they? Self sacrifice and giving to others is a feminine ideal, but many women compete with one another at work. Why is this? Welcome to Association Chat News! I’m your host, KiKi L’Italien, and let’s talk about this Association Chat News flash briefing for the first week of October – October 1, 2018. This is the 4th quarter of 2018 and this is about the time we start to see a few predictable things happen in the association space. Fall Conference Season is still rockin’ and rollin’ throughout October Folks are looking at how to meet goals by the end of the year We’re all beginning to look at what we need to do for the next year If you are in any kind of communications or marketing, you are already looking at the “How to End 2018 Strong” or “Top Trends to Know About for 2019” types of content. As much as I like to smirk at titles like this, I click on more of those types of items than anyone else. Here’s what I’m thinking are my “Top Three Ways to End 2018 Strong for Association Chat”: Invest in the community: Host at least one Association Chat Happy Hour in the DC Area - I want to try to connect with association folks in the DMV area (or anyone visiting) in-person, bringing together the Association Women in Tech people, the CIO Leaders group, the Idea Swap regulars, and all the others. Watch and listen for when/where this is happening in October. I’ve already got a sponsor for it and I think this will be fantastic! Deliver the best content: It seems like there are great needs and desires in our industry to understand things like intellectual property and innovation - both on the creator’s side and on the organization side - and I would like to learn more about this and bring some experts to you so they can help us all make better decisions. Watch in the coming weeks for interviews and content surrounding these topics. Diversify the voices: Over the years I’ve tried all kinds of things to bring different types of content, formats, and viewpoints to the Chat. Struggles with time, money, and other resources have made this difficult, but I think I’ve found a way to do this in a way that maintains the spirit and quality control needed for Chat content while keeping me compliant with the law and not adding more of a time issue to my own shoulders. I’m excited to share with you that I am working with some partners on bringing you some fresh, new, UNIQUE content in the upcoming months that will add value and hopefully inspire you to do bigger, better, and more. So that’s my Association Chat plan for the last three months of 2018. What’s on your agenda? Share your plans with me by tweeting me @kikilitalien using the hashtag #associationflash. I’m curious to find out what others are planning and I think sharing our goals can sometimes lead to better outcomes. On this week’s Chat interview I talk with American Mensa Ed/CEO Trevor Mitchell about how Mensa is leveraging cultural influences to enhance its brand through new partnership and licensing opportunities, as well as discussing how the membership is shaping the perception, our perception, of high intelligence. You can hear all that and more on Tuesday’s chat live at 2 pm EST. Be sure to visit the Association Chat Facebook Group and if you love this flash briefing and live interviews, please consider becoming an Association Chat Patreon patron. You can support these efforts for as little as $1 a month. Check back in later for the next Association Chat News flash briefing and be sure to sign up on the associationchat.com mailing list so you never miss out on another flash briefing! Welcome to Association Chat News! I’m your host, KiKi L’Italien, and it’s Monday, so let’s talk about this Association News flash briefing for September 10, 2018. Things got pretty fired up in Association Chat-land last Friday. In case you missed it, let’s get you caught up-to-speed. First, we dealt with long-seeded issues over member value.  When a consultant member of ASAE posted a blog to Collaborate, the members’-only community platform, some people thought it was more self-promotional than a community resource, and should be taken down. This triggered a discussion dredging up longtime concerns about membership value and the perceived imbalance between membership as a consultant versus association executives. Later, things again got heated on the Association Chat Facebook Group over a post sharing ASAE’s new process for applying to speak at next year’s Great Ideas Conference.  Members of the group found the language used to describe the suggested session prototypes suspiciously similar to session topics and specialty areas authored by specific consultants throughout the industry. As more people began to study the language in question, other session descriptions surfaced suggesting they too may have been lifted from other published articles, generating potential plagiarism concerns. Association Chat posters also discussed concerns about the new ASAE process for identifying conference content, wondering if the process for generating content for a meeting focused on innovation was itself not innovative enough. With this discussion still fresh and ongoing, several questions remain. Are consultant members at ASAE getting a fair shake? What is the line between helpful resource and content that is viewed as self-promotional? What are the boundaries of ownership when it comes to ideas? What are the rules for using wording found in online articles for prototypes? What happens next with the ASAE members and consultant engagement? What about the Great Ideas conference application process? Will that change in light of all this discussion? Clearly, it will be interesting to follow these conversations and see what happens next. You can see what happens next on this news and share your take on things over on the Association Chat Facebook Group. And don’t forget! You can subscribe for the daily flash briefing and regular tips about association chat news on the AssociationChat.com website. In 2015 Nancy Belmont launched a project called the Courage Wallthat captured the attention of national and international media. The Courage Wall is a huge public chalkboard that reads, “I WISH I HAD THE COURAGE TO . . . ®” Nancy was interviewed on the TODAY Show, was featured internationally on Al Jazeera Network, and was highlighted in print media including The Washington Postand Forbes Magazine. The project was even tweeted by First Lady Michelle Obama. In 2016, Nancy launched the UNITY Project, interactive public art that aims to bring people together to celebrate individuality and strengthen the ties that bind us together. The project went viral with an Upworthy video that captured over 8 million views. Nancy created a manual to empower others to bring UNITY to their communities. To-date, over 1,000 people from 47 states and 30 countries have downloaded the manual. In December of 2016, she created Be the Light, a project that helped people identify how they would share their light with the world. Over the course of four weeks, thousands of people lit candles and wrote intentions of actions they would take to spread light and love. The moving ABC story on the project recently won an Emmy Award. In June of 2017, Nancy launched Soar, a project that encourages people to let go of burdens that hold them back from stepping into their best selves. Participants identify a burden they are ready to release, write that burden on a rock and place the rock in a bin. Then they are invited to hang a brightly colored origami bird to symbolize their lightness and freedom from that burden. The project helps us understand that we are not alone in the human journey and reminds us of our individual and collective greatness. Nancy’s latest project, The Sanctuary, highlights people’s inner critic. Participants identify a negative thought about themselves that does not serve them. They discard that thought by writing it on a slip of paper that is ceremonially burned at the end of the project. They then craft a positive affirmation to take its place and write it on a colorful disc. Participants hang their positive affirmations in a field surrounded by thousands of other expansive thoughts, creating a sanctuary of limitless thinking. GDPR and Associations ...a Month Later It's been a month since The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect and what has happened since then? Have the questions around GDPR changed? Are organizations more GDPR compliant today than they were on May 25th, when the EU's new rules on privacy and user data became enforceable? What do association executives need to know? We'll discuss that on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 12:30 pm EDT for a special edition of Association Chat.  From a The Verge article earlier this year: But perhaps the GDPR requirement that has everyone tearing their hair out the most is the data subject access request. EU residents have the right to request access to review personal information gathered by companies. Those users — called “data subjects” in GDPR parlance — can ask for their information to be deleted, to be corrected if it’s incorrect, and even get delivered to them in a portable form. But that data might be on five different servers and in god knows how many formats. (This is assuming the company even knows that the data exists in the first place.) A big part of becoming GDPR compliant is setting up internal infrastructures so that these requests can be responded to. No one’s ready for GDPR. (2018). The Verge. There’s a member engagement channel that too many associations aren’t leveraging. In fact, this channel is more often referred to as baggage. There are a number of associations who have turned the baggage into an asset. The baggage we’re referring to? Tech Takeover - Are You Ready?

Why aren’t associations more innovative when it comes to tech maturity? What’s holding us back? For this show, I jumped off the stage at AMS Fest in Washington, DC, and ran to my computer to talk with experts about tech innovation (or the lack thereof) in the association industry. [Sorry for any of the "crowd noise" behind me in the audio] This topic, studied by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Foundation, sheds light on information technology (IT) maturity levels at associations. In its survey, only 9% of associations were found to be truly innovative. So I wanted to know: What are the major causes holding associations back? How do more innovative associations overcome this challenge? Could the key lie in a stronger relationship between the CIO and CEO be the solution, or is there a deeper issue at hand?  Some questions we discussed on this show: What did the ASAE study find about tech maturity at associations?  Why do you think more associations aren't on the upper echelon of tech maturity?  How valuable is the CEO/CIO (or equivalent) role in reaching the innovative end of tech maturity? When the CIO becomes the CEO or Executive Director -- how do you implement this change? What's your relationship with your CIO now? Panelists:  Tim Hopkins, Director, Digital Center, International Association of Fire Chiefs Bill Bruce, MBA, CAE, Executive Director, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Ray van Hilst, Director of Client Results, Yoko Co  About Association Chat Association Chat is weekly show that takes place live on Tuesdays at 2 pm EST  at https://www.crowdcast.io/kikilitalien.  You can connect with the association community throughout the week on Twitter using the hashtag #assnchat or through the private Facebook Group community. What Will We Do for Work? Associations and Entrepreneurs Taking on The Skills Gap From https://talentedlearning.com/how-associations-bridge-skills-gap-digital-badges/: "According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in December 2016 there were 5.6 million open jobs in this country and only 98,000 were added in March 2017.  That includes many notoriously hard-to-fill jobs.  These persistently unfilled positions are attributed to an unfortunate and somewhat ironic phenomenon called the “skills gap.” Skills gap theorists say that formal education isn’t preparing enough candidates for specialized high-skill, high-growth jobs such as data analysis, user experience design and software programming. Traditional education isn’t producing enough qualified people to support today’s rapidly changing business needs. And this talent supply problem is only compounded by a decreasing 4.5% unemployment rate." Featured guests: Patrick Haller has led a career in non-for-profit marketing for nearly two decades having experience in both membership and donor organizations. He has achieved growth for multiple organizations leveraging analytics and marketing strategy to make sound decisions in managing increased membership numbers and revenues. Additionally, Patrick inspires a customer-service oriented culture in his organization leading to more satisfied members and increased engagement and retention rates.  Patrick holds an MBA and MS in Strategic Management from Indiana University and a BS in Marketing from the University of Maryland. The Paradox of Potential

Association Chat Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 13, 2017 56:22

Having “high potential” does not mean performing at maximum capability. While many believe they are doing all they can, a huge number of professionals are frustrated because they are coming up short of their personal expectations (and the expectations of others). Some have become paralyzed from taking risks by the fear of failure, while others are not sure what is holding them back.  Speaker and facilitator Thom Singer has surveyed hundreds of people and the feedback is stunning that the majority of people are confident they can have greater success in their career. Companies in all sectors have employees who have reached a plateau or have become stuck in the “high middle”.  There is a very real gap between potential and results, and Thom wants to show people the path to doing more at any stage of their career. Beyond excuses and finger pointing, this interactive presentation gets to the heart of how people can accomplish more and enjoy their work. For decades companies have been identifying and training their “high potential” employees, but these individuals are not always growing into the organization’s future leaders.  There is a clear paradox around potential. The “future of work”  is about more than telecommuting and stand up desks. Finding ways to transcend potential, goals, educations, action, hard work and serendipity is key to long term success. Those who are focused on goal setting, realistic assessments, teamwork, successful human engagement, cross-selling, and other skills will help their company reach the highest potential and be more fulfilled in their jobs. This gap is true not only for individuals but also for organizations.  It is common to see a startup or other company that has a lot of potential, only to later witness it being shut down. While it is not possible to always achieve full potential (as once you get there, new opportunities will appear that creates a fresh path toward more potential), the constant struggle to bridge the gap will not happen by accident. Nobody should be comfortable relying on luck as the answer to their future. About Thom Singer Our guest has an eclectic background working in sales, marketing and business development roles for Fortune 500 Companies, Law Firms, and entrepreneurial ventures. He is a professional master of ceremonies, motivational keynote speaker, and the author of twelve books on the power of business development, networking, entrepreneurship, legal marketing, and presentation skills while also serving as the host of the popular “Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do” podcast. He regularly speaks at business and association conferences around the United States and beyond – and has presented to over 600 audiences during his career as a speaker. Welcome to the Talent Economy—a 21st century economy characterized by unprecedented innovation, connectivity, disruption, and opportunity. Unfortunately, the positive attributes of this economy have been largely overshadowed thus far. With job satisfaction declining across three decades, employee turnover costing organizations billions, profitability shrinking, and millions of Boomers retiring, the impetus to close the widening gap between talent-development practices and business impact has never been greater.  For too long, we’ve just assumed there is no other way. But Sarah Sladek proves there is another way. Drawing from documented workforce and talent-development research, as well as her own ongoing study of generational impacts, her presentation cites numerous examples of organizations that have been capable of engaging employees in this era of disruption—what they did, why it worked, and how it’s made a difference to the organizations’ outlook and bottom line. Sladek proves that it’s possible to create an organization designed to engage talent, and she provides audiences with the guidance to do it. About the Author Sarah Sladek was leading the charge for organizations and companies to adapt to younger generations long before anybody else. Concerned about declining engagement in our nation’s membership associations, non-profits, and workplaces, Sarah Sladek founded XYZ University in 2002 and her fifth book, Talent Generation, will be published this year. https://www.xyzuniversity.com/talentgen Association Chat (est. 2009) is an online community and weekly chat that takes place on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on https://www.crowdcast.io/kikilitalien. Adrian is an acknowledged innovator and speaker on participant-led event design, and facilitates two popular opening and closing plenaries. His latest book, The Power of Participation: Creating Conferences That Deliver Learning, Connection, Engagement, and Action—described by Paul Salinger, VP of Marketing, Oracle, as a book that “should be OPEN on every meeting planner’s and event marketer’s desk, and used every day”—is a compendium of participation techniques that meeting planners and presenters can use to significantly improve any meeting session. Drones – Amazing technology offering opportunities and dilemmas for all of us! But how much do you really know about drones and what do you NEED to know in order to do your due diligence as a leader? Meet the extreme leader of Geoteaming – John Chen. He climbs mountains, walks on fire, swims with dolphins in the wild, rides Harleys and snowboards out of helicopters. He's also been doing some pretty amazing things using drones at events.  Sounds cool, right? But what kinds of things EXACTLY can we do with drones at our meetings? What are the possibilities? What are the concerns? What are some of the legal issues we need to be aware of? These are a lot of questions for one person, so for this episode of Association Chat, I also brought on expert photographer Chuck Fazio whom you might remember from a previous episode. He's also been using drones at meetings and when John and Chuck get talking, some amazing things happen...including the potential birth of a NEW ASSOCIATION! “With every big risk comes a hidden reward. It may not be what you think it is, it may be better!”  – John Chen More About Association Chat Association Chat (est. 2009) is an online community and weekly chat that takes place on Tuesdays at 2pm ET on https://www.crowdcast.io/kikilitalien. The format is about 1-hour long where we begin with 10 minutes of discussion on association news and then we bring in our esteemed industry expert to for an elevated and nuanced conversation about a key area that top association executives should be considering.  We live stream over several platforms (Crowdcast, Periscope, Facebook Live, and YouTube live), and average anywhere between 20-200 live participants each week.  There are often live questions from our online audience. For Monica, those two worlds are entrepreneurship and public policy. Prior to InnovatorsBox®, Monica specialized in nuclear nonproliferation as contract support to the U.S. government and a non-resident Kelly Fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS. She has lived and worked abroad at the United Nations in Geneva and Chosun Newspaper in Seoul. For this episode, I talked with the entertaining and enigmatic Chuck Fazio for the Association Chat episode, "Being Chuck Fazio - Photographer & Instigator, on Life, Art, and the Meetings Industry Fund." A few questions we received for Chuck: "How did you reinvent yourself (you weren't always a photographer, were you) and hone your craft? What were the top three lessons learned along the way?" "Chuck has had and continues to have many successes in a variety of different worlds. How much of it was jumping in with both feet, and how much was from meticulous planning?" "Professional: any lessons learned about hosting place-based education programs / study tours? Personal: if I am obsessed with taking amateur photos of food (and drinks) as a hobbyist, what's the best way to up my game?"
