SPD statt Startup. Bundestag statt Firmen-Office.

"In our family, whenever anyone goes out, they don't ask him, 'What did you see?' The first question is 'What did you eat?' So, food is paramount. In my childhood, if ever I wanted to have good food at home, I'd ask my father for it. Funnily enough, it was the men in the family who took on that role. My father is a very passionate cook. I felt that there should be some place where his recipes are documented because everyone in the family has memories associated with his food" - Shreeparna Khaitan, author, 'Bapu's Curries' talks about her father lawyer Umesh Khaitan's culinary repertoire that includes traditional Marwari dishes and fantastic fusion ideas even as co-author Surbhi Anand reveals plans to bring out another volume for the many great dishes that didn't make it to this one. From Rajasthani ker sangri ka saag to delicious santare ka jhol (soupy orange curry) and gucchi biryani (biryani with Kashmiri morels), the food ideas in this volume are both delightful and surprising.

Samira's mom, Monika Daswani, joins the podcast to discuss her experience navigating Samira's cancer diagnosis and treatment as her caregiver. Monika, a trained chef by profession, shares her perspective on caring for her daughter during her cancer treatment including the challenges of maintaining nutrition during treatment, adapting meals to symptoms, and the importance of a strong support network. Monika emphasizes the role of faith, spirituality, and intent in both caregiving and healing. She also discusses her work leading the Helping Hands Foundation, which supports cancer patients in India. Key Highlights: The role of family caregivers during cancer treatment How faith, intent and spirituality guided Monika's caregiving Navigating nutrition during cancer treatments About our guest: Monika Daswani is the CEO and a member of Helping Hands's Board of Directors. With her leadership, Helping Hands pivoted from a general non-profit to embrace the mission to spread awareness about cancer diagnosis, early detection, and support other patients and caregivers. She was the primary caregiver to her daughter, who was diagnosed with cancer. A self-taught chef, Monika Daswani has dedicated her life to the gourmet food catering industry. She is the Founder and CEO of Kitchen Stories, a food catering company that has provided Kolkata, and numerous cities in India, access to global cuisine for over 2 decades. Key Moments: 7 minutes: It takes a village - “The whole family wanted to be there with and for Samira. We are a small family of five, and each of us contributed in our own way for her. I was looking after Samira's food. My husband, who is very good at doing research, was helping me with handling symptoms with the correct food and home remedies. Raghav was Samira's emotional support. My other son Rohin, because he also lives in San Francisco, knew the healthcare system and could negotiate and set up appointments and get reports.” 10 minutes: On how faith has played a part in her caregiving journey - “I essentially work on faith. And I have enough faith, as I tell my family, for my entire family. Because I know I'm not alone, and I know the universe is there for me, and I think the universe is actually there for everyone. It's just up to us to realize him and absorb that energy from him. And as a caregiver, I think that is what I did because there is only so much that you can do as a human being. There is so much more that you require to be able to successfully survive this journey because at every point, it's trying to bring you down.” 12 minutes: On nutrition during cancer treatments - “Feeding her during chemo was all about focusing on how much nutrition and energy can be absorbed from what you are taking in because a body needs it all. The body is battling all those poisons that are going in. All the good cells, bad cells, everything is getting killed. We need the body to fight back. Because I come from India, when we cook, we believe that it's your thoughts and it's your vibrations that get transmitted in the food that you cook. It's your intent. And that's what I would focus on.” Visit the Manta Cares website Disclaimer: This podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed.

In this episode, Verena Hubertz, Founder and former Managing Director at Kitchen Stories, shares her learnings from founding her own company at a young age and her experiences in her recent career shift from the startup world into politics.
Erik had a buddy on board with him named Willy. Willy wasn't in on the conversation but I stayed on the boat with them for 30-45 minutes after wrapping up our conversation. They poured me a delicious Scotch and continued the conversation. Eric told me more about his life as a chef. Willy, as it turned out was in the Belgian Navy for 36 years and we even an admiral! He also served as a Belgian diplomat to the US. We covered a handful of topics from Marquis de Lafayette, what I would call my philosophy of the road trip- but from Eriks view and his take on the state of things both in the US and globally. This road trip is a roller coaster of emotions every single day!!

*Note: At 24:00, what Sarnt meant here is a contemporary ethnic segregation amongst Southeast Asians in middle-class milieus, which happens less in the Berlin environment, in comparison to Bangkok. Historically, however, in West/East Germany there had been huge racial segregation imposed by both states, for example, between migrant "contract" workers who weren't allowed to live or interact with regular citizens through out the 1970/80s — another complex topic of another in-depth conversation. Sarnt Utamachote talks to us about postcoloniality, migrant movements and migrant spaces, internationalism, forms of survival for artists and queer and queer artists, the Diaspora ↔ War ↔ Tourism Complex, and how access to language affects access to archival research. Plus some K-pop, Sundance, Bangkok art scene, and the Berlin club scene. Sarnt Utamachote is a queer filmmaker, photographer and curator. He is interested in deconstructing the “surfaces”, what rendered the “humans” behind invisible, by highlighting/curating the fragments; the humane subtleties often overlooked in everyday life - possible sources of social dignity and subject positions. He studied Industrial Design at Chulalongkorn University, and Cinema Studies and Literature Studies at the Freie Universität of Berlin. He co-founded collective un.thai.tled (of Thai-German diasporic critical creatives), through which he curates critical cultural exhibitions. His last project was the exhibition “Beyond the Kitchen: Stories of Thai Park”, where he curated and researched the archive of Thai migration in Berlin with Bezirksmuseum Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The collective also holds film screenings, including the annual un.thai.tled Film Festival Berlin. He researches and collects the archive of Thai migrations and movements in Berlin/Germany, in an attempt to redefine how migrant spaces and micro-histories are relevant to the postcolonial urban discourses. He was one of the selected participants of the Young Curators Workshop for 11th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art 2020, organized by Pip Day. As a film producer/director/ editor, Sarnt utilizes cinema as a means for social engagement and an exercise of creative freedom beyond social conditional realities. His video installation “I Am Not Your Mother” was commissioned and exhibited at International Rotterdam Film Festival 2020 and nominated for “R.D. Pestonji Award” for best Thai short film at Thai Short Film and Video Festival Bangkok 2020. He is the 2020 recipient of Xposed Short Film Fund, granted by Xposed Queer Film Festival Berlin. His music video for Coco Elane's 'Deep Talk' was nominated for a Bucharest Film Award. www.sarntutamachote.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sugar-nutmeg/support
ABOUT THE EPISODE: If you are an entrepreneur you know how straining the whole process of building a startup can be, especially financially. But there are many ways to build something without fundraising straight away. An amazing example is Kitchen Stories. Co-Founders Verena and Menting were straight out of business school when they decided to launch an app to help everyone learn how to cook. They had no coding skills, no particular cooking ones either. They had never started a company before and of course had no way to get money. So they did what they had to do: roll up their sleeves and learn everything from scratch. Fast-forward 10 months after the launch: the app already had millions of downloads and served 120 countries. And they did it with zero marketing spending. Kitchen Stories has since grown to over 15M users with top-class VCs like Cherry Ventures and Point9 on board. So we invited Verena at The Family to share her secret sauce with us, the one that helped them become the largest food publisher on the App store practically overnight. *** Learn more about The Family and apply to join us here: thefamily.co Check out the video of the talk here: Bootstrap your startup like a boss by Verena Hubertz, Co-Founder of Kitchen Stories Check out other videos on our Youtube channel: Startupfood Check out our events here: The Family Events We also write amazing articles: Medium
