The year before Y2K, just as we were all getting ready for the world to end but also sort of loving the new technology that seemed to be streaming our way at lightening speed, The Matrix was released and boy did that F a lot of people up! Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburn, and a brand new cinematic technology called Bullet Speed. Whoaaaaaa. We didn't see this movie in theaters when it came out (not the biggest sci fi fans) but certainly remember the to-do it caused and spoofs it spawned.  Watching it nearly 25 years later, and the flick holds up and we're still concerned ... are we just all in The Matrix guys??? We talk about other past big deal film technologies that we've been lucky enough to be alive for (still waiting for 3-D to really be cool!), continue to wax on about how Keanu is the greatest human alive, and how Joe Pantoliano aka Matrix Mole aka Frances Fratelli just always plays a bad slimey dude.  Would you take the blue pill or red pill???

The gang speaks fake Italian this week, as they review the British-American heist comedy, A Fish Called Wanda (1988) starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, John Cleese, and Michael Palin. While not a Monty Python production, the silliness prevails, and the laughs come from both the obvious, and the subtle bits. Kevin Kline won best supporting actor as his role as Otto, and the film itself won a list of awards, in addition to being #1 in the box office. Man of Steel is directed by Zach Snyder and is about an alien child that is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened, when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth. It stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent aka Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane along with Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Russell Crow, Christopher Meloni, Kevin Costner, and Laurence Fishburn. This film is out of the DC Universe and is available to watch with your subscription to HBOMax or for rent on Amazon Prime. Superman Cocktail (thismamaslife.com): Ingredients 1 oz Cherry Vodka 1 oz Blue Curacao 2 oz Sprite 1 oz Coconut Vodka 1 oz Grenadine Ice Gold sanding sugar Simple syrup Directions Set out two small appetizer plates. On one of the plates, pour out about 1 tbsp of simple syrup. On the other plate, add the sanding sugar. Take your cocktail glass and dip the rim of it into the syrup and then into the sanding sugar. Set the glass aside while you prepare the cocktail. Fill your glass ¾ of the way with ice. *Tip: Small chunks of ice work much better than larger ones. In a shaker, add the vodkas and grenadine and shake it like you’re Superman. Pour the mix into your glass. Add the Blue Curacao and Sprite to your shaker and shake vigorously again. Pour the blue mixture slowly into the glass, pouring it straight down the center to achieve the layered look. Kryptonite (cocktailbuilder.com): Ingredients 3/4 oz of Pineapple Juice 3/4 oz of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum 3/4 oz of Malibu Coconut Rum 3/4 oz of Midori Melon Liqueur 1 splash of Bacardi 151 Rum Directions Combine ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass, and serve. Man of Steel Drinking Game (movieboozer.com): Take a Drink Whenever you check your watch. Every time you are reminded of Independence Day, The Matrix, Avatar, or any other movie. (For me that includes Troll 2, because Russell Crowe popping up to help Lois in one scene reminded me very much of Grandpa Seth—I realize I am probably the only person in the world to make this correlation.) At every “subtle” religious metaphor. Every time pop-up Russell Crowe appears. Every time Michael Shannon bugs his eyes out. At every obvious product placement. When Superman does. (Yes, Superman drinks a beer in this movie. I don’t so much have a problem with the fact that he does, but Budweiser? Really Superman?) Every time someone says “codex.” When you hear a song from the Singles soundtrack. Take Two When they don’t even try to make it a metaphor. Do a Shot If you catch the one nod to Lex Luthor. (Whom I predict we’ll be seeing more of in the next film.) As always, drink responsibly and with others. Please subscribe and share to the podcast. The Funky Uncle Sloppy... the "individualist"... Ricky Powell. I met up with the legendary photographer on West 8th Street in the West Village at Evas Kitchen to talk that nonsense. He tells the story of how he got his first camera, after being "played like a wet tuna sandwich" and the reasoning behind him deciding to take to the streets to take photos. His early days as a kid, meeting the "Beastie Boys" and going on the road with them and "Run DMC" on the "Raising Hell" Tour. From his public access television show, "Rappin' with The Rickster" to photographing people like Cindy Crawford, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Mike Tyson, Eazy-E, Laurence Fishburn, Dondi and countless others along with the the six books he's put out and so much in between while "crunching on a crispy knish". This was awesome to do. There will be a part two I'm sure and possibly more than that. I hope you enjoy this one!

This fall, a pair of high-profile Texas directors - David Gordon Green and Richard Linklater - will release new films that could get the attention of Oscar voters. Green's up first with "Stronger," starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Jeff Bauman, a man who lost both of his legs during the Boston Marathon bombing. Meanwhile, Linklater gathers Steve Carell, Laurence Fishburn and Bryan Cranston for "Last Flag Flying." It tells the story of a grieving father (Carell) who goes on a road trip to retrieve the remains of his killed in action in Iraq. This week, we preview those films and take a sneak peek at the upcoming Venice Film Festival, which one of our team members will be attending.

In this episode of our Six Weeks to Fitness podcast, I will be joined by Adam Davenport, a Yale educated, award winning, actor, writer and director.  Adam  recently completed filming the part of Hercules in the Independent production “Project Olympus”, a feature length rock musical.  There were about 500 other actors auditioning for the role of Hercules. During the interview, Adam will take us on his amazing journey growing up in the south suburbs of Chicago, where he read a book every day and lived a sort of introverted, nerdy lifestyle (in Adam’s words), with very little physical activity, to becoming a film major at Yale University and being the recipient of the Panavision New Filmmaker Awards.  Adam will also discuss his many role models growing up, such as Toni Morrison, Halle Berry, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington, Alfre Woodard, Laurence Fishburn, George Lucas and others, some of whom he has collaborated with in his young career.  Adam lives a healthy lifestyle which consists of exercising 5 to 6 days a week, eating small healthy meals throughout the day and does not drink alcohol because of the negative effects alcohol consumption has on the body.  He is living proof that if you take care of your body, your body will take care of you. Adam will also provide action steps that he believes anyone can take in order to be successful and why he believes that visualization is important when it comes to accomplishing your goals.  This was an inspiring and informative interview from a truly remarkable and committed rising star.
