Entrepreneurship After Trauma: Redefining Strength with Amy Friesen

In this heartfelt episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty speaks with Amy Friesen—award-winning entrepreneur, author, and founder of Tea & Toast—about the emotional realities of caregiving, trauma, and entrepreneurship. Amy shares how her personal journey through loss and family dysfunction led to creating two impactful organizations dedicated to guiding caregivers and families through the complex world of elder care. Amy reveals how building a business was both an act of survival and healing, and how her work now helps others navigate caregiving with boundaries, resilience, and community. From launching an entire industry category to supporting caregivers facing trauma, Amy's story offers powerful lessons for anyone balancing emotional weight with leadership. About the Guest: Amy Friesen is the founder of Tea and Toast and Elder Care Planners of Canada, both pioneering services helping Canadian families navigate eldercare. With over two decades in the senior living industry, Amy's mission is to bring clarity, structure, and compassion to an emotionally taxing process. She's also the author of a book that empowers caregivers with practical tools and insight to make informed, confident decisions. Key Takeaways: Caregiving often reactivates old trauma, especially in estranged or difficult family relationships. Entrepreneurship can be a vehicle for healing—but it requires resilience when recognition is absent. Amy created a new category in eldercare planning from scratch, confronting legal and systemic barriers with determination. “You are not alone” is more than a slogan—it's a strategy for mental wellness through connection and community. Leadership in caregiving isn't about doing more, but about setting boundaries and doing what matters. Exercise during pregnancy has long been shrouded in caution and confusion. What if many of the modifications we've been taught are unnecessary? Drawing from both cutting-edge research and personal experience through multiple pregnancies, this episode challenges conventional wisdom about prenatal exercise. The fitness landscape for pregnant women has dramatically evolved over the past decade. Where once pregnant women received advice limited to walking or gentle yoga, we now recognize the benefits of maintaining strength and conditioning throughout pregnancy. But questions remain: should every pregnant woman modify exercises in the same way? Does holding your breath while lifting actually increase your risk of pelvic floor issues? What's the difference between physiologically-based recommendations versus outcome-based evidence? Two distinct approaches have emerged in pregnancy fitness guidance. One camp bases recommendations on physiological changes happening during pregnancy, suggesting universal modifications regardless of individual fitness levels. The other acknowledges the body's remarkable adaptability, suggesting women continue their pre-pregnancy routines until symptoms indicate a need for change. My journey as both a clinician and researcher has led me from firmly believing in the first approach to increasingly embracing the second. Most compelling is emerging evidence showing that fitness level entering pregnancy serves as a protective factor against pain and dysfunction. Rather than focusing exclusively on which movements to avoid, we might better serve pregnant women by emphasizing the importance of strengthening their bodies before and during pregnancy. This represents a profound shift away from fear-based messaging that can unnecessarily limit movement during a critical life stage.Ready to explore how your body's signals might guide your pregnancy fitness journey better than universal modifications? Listen now to discover why the most beneficial approach might be less restrictive than you've been led to believe.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. “As rich as a Rothschild” was a common saying in the gilded age. Their rags to riches story reads like many other great modern financial dynasties; a brilliant founder who forged a fortune and future generations who squandered it on eccentricities. But the Rothschilds have a few interesting twists; The Patriarch's five sons were sent across Europe to establish their own banking dynasties. They explicitly excluded their sisters and daughters from the business, and inbred extensively to keep their wealth intact. And the Rothschilds were uniquely vilified because they were Jewish. They were targeted by the Nazis and saw much of their art, palaces and cash stolen. And they continue to inspire conspiracy theories which claim they secretly control the world. Surprise! The Warm Thoughts column two weeks ago, on, "I've Learned," was favorably received by readers. It also brought me a four page email letter on more "I've learned." So here's a sequel to the first column: "I've learned that you can get by on charm for about 15 minutes, after that, you'd better know something. I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to the best others can do, but the best you can do. I've learned that it's not what happens to us that's important. It's what we do about it. I've learned that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I've learned that it may be easier to react than to plan ahead, but it's much less effective. I've learned that you can keep going long after you think you can't. I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. I've learned that either you control your attitude or it controls you. I've learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, passion fades and there had better be something stronger to take its place. I've learned that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I've learned that learning to forgive takes practice. I've learned that there are people who love you dearly, but just don't know how to show it. I've learned that money is a lousy way of keeping score. I've learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones to help you get back up. I've learned that no matter how good a friend is, they are going to hurt you once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I've learned that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others, sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself. I've learned that background and circumstances may have influenced who we are or who we become. I've learned that your life can be changed in a matter of seconds by people who don't even know you. I've learned that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help. I've learned that the paradigm we live in is not all that is offered to us. And again, I've learned that I still have a lot to learn, and need to just keep on keeping on learning." In 2013, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down and handed the throne to her son, Willem Alexander. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth II of the UK died at the age of 96 and her son, Charles III inherited the throne. And on January 14th, 2024, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated in favor of her son, Frederik X. In just over 10 years, the world has gone from three accomplished, popular and long reigning Queens Regnant to zero. That's right, there are no female monarchs anywhere in the world. The future may be female, but not in the archaic system of hereditary monarchy. However there are several female heirs waiting in succession lines to be the next great Queen regnant. Let's take a look at which monarchies even allow women to occupy their thrones, and count down from those which will have to wait a few generations before getting a female sovereign, to those which are just one heartbeat, or abdication away from welcoming the World's next Queen Regnant. 11.
