With three rounds left of the 2025 season, Oscar Piastri is still in contention to become Formula 1 World Champion for the first time. So what's it like being in the thick of an F1 title fight with so much at stake? Speaking to Tom Clarkson before the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Oscar opens up about the pressure of a title battle and why fighting a teammate is different to racing against any other driver. He also discusses whether his relationship with teammate Lando Norris has changed this year and how he feels McLaren have handled the challenge of treating them both equally. It's easy to forget that this is only Oscar's third season as an F1 driver. With seven wins, seven podiums and five pole positions, he's taken a huge leap forward. What exactly did he work on over the winter to make so much progress this year? And how are race engineer Tom Stallard, manager Mark Webber and new physio Artturi Simila all helping his development? As well as reflecting on the highs, Oscar also talks about dealing with setbacks in Australia, at Silverstone and in Azerbaijan, which is good insight into how he'll bounce back from a difficult weekend in Brazil. F1TV lead commentator Alex Jacques and Brazilian commentator Felipe Giaffone join Tom Clarkson in the Interlagos paddock to analyse an eventful race in Brazil. Converting two pole positions into Grand Prix and Sprint wins, Lando Norris produced a perfect weekend to move 24 points clear of teammate Oscar Piastri at the top of the standings. With just three rounds left of the 2025 season, does Lando have one hand on the title now? What did Alex and Felipe make of Oscar's 10-second penalty? And how will the Australian be feeling after losing more ground in the championship? After his sensational win from P17 in Sao Paulo last year, Max Verstappen fought back in emphatic style again – this time from the pitlane to P3. How did he and Red Bull execute that incredible comeback after such a difficult qualifying session? Despite that remarkable recovery, Max lost more ground on Lando, but did close the gap to Oscar, so where do his hopes of becoming a five-time World Champion this season lie now? Plus, the guys also reflect on impressive performances from Kimi Antonelli, Ollie Bearman and Liam Lawson, a challenging first home race for Gabriel Bortoleto, and a very disappointing double DNF for Ferrari. 293: Johnny Nelson on the Gym that Created World Champions

Science for Sport Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 10, 2025 32:20

This week on the Science for Sport podcast, host Richard Graves is joined by boxing legend Johnny Nelson MBE, the longest-reigning cruiserweight world champion in history. With a story that spans early losses, a transformative mentorship under Brendan Ingle, mental resilience, structural discipline, and elite-level performance, Johnny offers a rare window into the mindset and preparation of a world-class athlete. From his humble Sheffield upbringing through a gritty apprenticeship in Europe to standing atop the world with 13 title defences, Johnny reflects on the physical demands of his sport, the mental architecture that carried him, and how those lessons translate into high-performance sport science environments today. Whether you're working with elite athletes, exploring pathway development, or investigating the interplay of mindset, culture and performance. This episode delivers actionable insight. You'll Learn * How deliberate structure and environment in the early years set Johnny's foundation for world-class performance, and what that means for athlete development pipelines in elite sport. * The interplay between physical conditioning and mental readiness: why Johnny argues that even 99% physical fitness isn't enough without mental strength to match. * How a coach/mentor adapted learning modality to individual athlete needs (story-based learning vs. written instruction) and how that insight translates to sport science practice. * The “apprenticeship phase” of elite athletes: why Johnny spent six years as a sparring partner across Europe, what he learned about failure, character-building and resilience, and how that maps to athlete development models. * The transition out of elite competition: Johnny's reflections on his own injury-forced retirement, loss of gym identity and how elite sport practitioners can support athlete exit and long-term wellbeing. * Practical take-aways on environment design, multicultural team culture, and creating performance contexts that simulate hostile or challenging conditions (drawing on Johnny's anecdotes of gym culture and travelling abroad). About Johnny Nelson Johnny Nelson (born 4 January 1967, Sheffield) turned professional in 1986 after a modest amateur career. He trained under iconic coach Brendan Ingle at the Wincobank gym in Sheffield, where he developed not only boxing skills but a mindset of relentless belief and self-validation. In March 1999 he captured the WBO Cruiserweight World Title and held it until his retirement in 2006—during which he defended it 13 times, the most ever in cruiserweight history. Post-career, Johnny has built a prominent role as a boxing pundit, keynote speaker, and mentor around mindset, resilience and high-performance culture. They fail because they chase the wrong customers.Mark Walker, CEO of Nue, took a different path. With decades in enterprise software—ERP, CRM, NetSuite—he joined Nue in March 2022 when it was pre-revenue and a "science experiment." He made one decision that changed everything: focus on speed over complexity. When Nvidia came calling, he said no. When asked to build for everyone, he picked his peers instead. And this inspired me to invite Mark to my podcast. We explore why treating speed as your core product creates defensible value. Mark shares his philosophy on saying no to wrong-fit customers, building modular systems that compress implementation from years to weeks, and why honesty beats hype when competing against legacy vendors. You'll discover why OpenAI went live in 8 weeks and Anthropic in 12—and what that speed signals to the market. We also zoom in on two of the 10 traits that define remarkable software companies:They acknowledge they cannot please everyoneThey aim to be different, not just betterMark's story is proof that when you optimize every decision for customer speed, saying no to complexity becomes your competitive advantage. Here's one of Mark's quotes that captures his approach to market focus:"If you want to be great at something, you have to be bad at something else. There are no NFL linemen who are also World Champion marathoners. They're both elite athletes, but they're not the same athlete."By listening to this episode, you'll learn:Why the fastest implementations come from saying no to features, not adding themWhat happens when you tell a billion-dollar prospect they're not the right fitWhen modularity beats monolithic systems in multi-model revenue businessesWhy traditional enterprises are preemptively switching systems before they know what's comingFor more information about the guest from this week:Guest: Mark Walker, CEO at NueWebsite: nue.io

Alex Jacques is the voice of Channel 4's F1 coverage in the UK and his commentary is carried on F1 TV in the US and around the world. He works alongside former F1 drivers David Coulthard and Jolyon Palmer.  Alex worked his way up through F2 and the W Series and by 2018 he was a full time F1 commentator.  He was voted Commentator of the Year in the 2022 Broadcast Sports Awards and his voice has appeared in Drive to Survive and F1 video games. Alex's new book Grid to Glory, highlights 75 key moments from F1's 75 year history.  But it's not one anecdote per year, it's much more interesting than that. He describes the kidnapping of the F1 World Champion driver, the day the F1 drivers went on strike, the Grand Prix that featured just six cars and many other great tales.  Send your comments or questions to: @jamesallenonf1 on X or jamesallenonf1@autosport.com. This week we do a deep archaeological dig into the baseball path laid down by the legendary Don Drysdale. At 6'5" tall and 190 pounds, he was an intimidating pitcher, who used brushback pitches to keep opposing batters off-balanced. Together with southpaw Sandy Koufax, the tandem would become one of the fiercest lefty/righty duos in the history of baseball. By the time Drysdale's career is in the books, he's a three-time World Champion, and a Cy Young Award winner, with a win/loss record of 209-166 and a sparkling 2,95 ERA. Not bad for a kid, who never threw a pitch from the mound until his senior year in high school, where the Brooklyn Dodgers recruited and signed him in 1954. #DonDrysdale #ScottDrysdale #VanNuysCalifornia #BrooklynDodgers #LosAngelesDodgers #WaltAlston #Dodgers StadiumAtChavezRavine #FrankRobinson #MickeyMantle #SandyKoufax #CyYoungAward

He talks about the creative process behind designing a high-performance surfboard, the delicate balance between innovation and intuition, and what it takes to translate a surfer's personality and energy into foam, resin, and speed. We explore the golden years of his collaboration with Gabriel Medina, from their first boards together to the unforgettable 2014 World Title victory. Johnny reflects on the evolution of surfboard design for competitive surfing, the impact of wave pools, and how new materials and technologies are shaping the future of performance surfing. He also discusses how he maintains authenticity and craftsmanship in a world increasingly dominated by mass-production and marketing hype. But beyond technique and competition, this episode also dives deep into Johnny's philosophy of surfing and life, his belief that shaping is an art form, his connection with the ocean, and his gratitude for being part of a global community that shares the same passion. From shaping bays in Brazil to the powerful waves of the Basque Coast, Johnny's story is one of perseverance, creativity, and the timeless pursuit of excellence. If you love surf culture, design, and craftsmanship, this episode is a must-listen. You'll hear about the tools, the rituals, and the inspirations that make each Cabianca board unique a fusion of Brazilian soul and Basque precision. Johnny also offers advice for young shapers starting out today, and shares his vision of what the next generation of surfboards and surfers might look like.
