Join Marian Pulford, Co-Founder and CEO of Kestrel Labs, for an insightful evaluation of why optimizing broken workflows is a losing strategy for category-defining startups. In the tech world, most founders compete by building incremental software wrappers designed to make manual tasks marginally faster or cheaper. Marian argues that the true deep-tech breakthroughs occur when operators challenge the foundational assumption that those painful workflows need to exist in the first place. Focusing on the built environment—one of the world's largest, most capital-intensive, yet least digitized markets—we explore how Kestrel Labs is eliminating the traditional, high-friction regulatory review loop.
Evan and Cormac dig into why architects deliberately stop detailing at "design intent" instead of shop-drawing level, and how that decision has handed constructability over to contractors and manufacturers. They explore the level of detail (LOD) gap between US and overseas practice, a real design-assist story about pushing a terracotta fin cantilever further with a manufacturer, and why competitive bidding punishes architects who over-detail their own work. That leads into a wider conversation about why so much new construction feels generic and developer-driven, and why "breaking the mass" isn't the daring move it's marketed as. Using Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian houses and Sam Mockbee's Rural Studio as examples, they make the case that affordability is a design tool, not a constraint that kills architecture. This episode is especially relevant for project architects and BIM managers navigating construction documentation expectations, and for anyone frustrated by how mundane the built environment has become. It's a push to treat understanding construction and materials as the real path to bold, affordable design. Anika sat down with Kristian Fields, President of Klover Contracting, to explore why the construction industry remains stuck in outdated practices while a few innovators are fundamentally reshaping how large-scale infrastructure gets built. They revealed a counterintuitive truth: the problem isn't labor shortage—it's workflow predictability. Kristian's 25-year perspective on construction management and his experience scaling Klover offered practical solutions against the persistent "construction can't change" narrative, alongside a sharp look at where prefabrication and AI actually create value. In This EpisodeThe origin story of Kristian's transition from VP Field Operations to President and what it actually requiredScaling velocity: watching Klover expand from regional contractor to national prefab leader with 100,000 sq ft manufacturing facilityThe prefabrication bet: why solving a 450,000-worker shortage required rethinking entire construction workflowsTeam culture that endures: why the "31 Fundamentals" campaign transformed hiring and retentionWhy documented processes and institutional memory matter more than raw headcountThe ongoing myth that prefab compromises quality—what real project data actually showsBuilding the BIM-to-Field execution bridge and why that gap existedLeadership lessons from historic preservation to data centers: why architectural intent matters in every buildPredictive automation versus chatbot AI: where manufacturing is actually headedTimestamps00:00 Introduction: 25 years in construction management10:00 The prefabrication origin story and why it started 15 years ago12:16 The construction industry's real problem: skilled labor shortage and workflow unpredictability22:01 Environmental impact: reducing 3,000+ gallons of diesel fuel through prefab consolidation29:24 Preparing for AI-assisted manufacturing: rethinking BIM coding for future machine integration36:33 Advice for newcomers: pursue work you enjoy, stay close to target roles, maintain humility39:00 The core mantra: "Be relentless about improvement" and "action over accuracy"Key Insights & TakeawaysInsight 1: Workflow Unpredictability Isn't a Labor Problem—It's a Strategy ProblemConstruction sites with 50+ workers juggling electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and structural crews operate like traffic on a congested highway. One trade delays another. The industry assumes the solution is hiring more workers. Klover's insight: the problem is predictability. By moving complex coordination off-site into BIM modeling and prefabrication, you eliminate the traffic jam entirely. The fix isn't more people—it's smarter workflows.Insight 2: Culture Scales Through Documented Examples, Not Top-Down MandatesThe "31 Fundamentals" campaign works because it's not a poster on the wall. Every week, Kristian shares one fundamental with real examples of employees living it. Other employees then submit their own interpretations. Recognition follows. That's how culture survives hypergrowth—through repetition, example, and celebration of behavior you want to see.Insight 3: AI Amplifies What You Already Have—It Doesn't Create Value in a VacuumKristian isn't chasing chatbots or automation theater. He's preparing for AI that augments human expertise. The vision: BIM models coded to eventually communicate with automated welders or assembly equipment. Workers don't disappear—they expand their capacity. If you don't have documented processes and repeatable workflows, no AI tool compensates. Your advantage is the expertise you've already built.Insight 4: The Future Isn't Conversational AI—It's Predictive IntelligenceForget chatbots answering questions. Imagine manufacturing AI that knows your project timeline, your site constraints, your crew's skill level, and your budget—and it automatically optimizes panel sequencing, delivery schedules, and installation sequences without asking a single question. That's predictive intelligence. That's where Klover is heading.Resources & Links MentionedKlover ContractingWebsite: www.kloverinc.comServices: Prefab construction, BIM coordination, data center solutions, healthcare, multifamily housing, higher educationKey ConceptsBIM (Building Information Modeling): 3D digital modeling that resolves design conflicts before manufacturingJust-in-Time Delivery: Manufacturing and delivering components precisely when needed to avoid wasteThe 31 Fundamentals: Weekly cultural communication framework covering safety, quality, teamwork, and accountabilityPrefabrication: Off-site manufacturing of building components for faster, safer, more predictable installationAbout Kristian FieldsKristian Fields is President of Klover Contracting, a prefabrication and commercial construction leader serving healthcare, multifamily housing, higher education, and data center markets across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
What is the sweet spot between digital project delivery and inclusive, diverse collaboration? Digital transformation is a significant player in the field of project delivery improvement and innovation. Sheryl Staub-French, a UBC Civil Engineering professor and 20-year infrastructure and building information modelling veteran, is the perfect spokesperson for its journey. Sheryl joins Evgenia for a conversation that centres change—both technological and cultural—for the betterment of the infrastructure industry. The sector is long (and infamously) plagued by the spectre of over-budget-and-over-time, and Sheryl's research seeks to uncover innovations that can shift this trend. It all starts, she stresses, at a systems level. In their conversation, Evgenia and Sheryl explore Sheryl's leadership in equity, diversity, and inclusion, including her role as the first Associate Dean of ED&I in UBC's Faculty of Applied Science and the first female head of her department. Sheryl reflects on the persistent underrepresentation of women and Indigenous students in engineering, the importance of groundbreaking systems and culture change, and why inclusion of all kinds is not separate from project success. The discussion also burrows deep into the human and technical sides of infrastructure innovation. Pointing to specific successes in other countries, Sheryl argues that digital tools alone will not transform the industry unless owners, teams, and organizations are ready to change how they work together and implement that change at an organizational, not individual, level. Whether discussing BIM, IPD, AI, or engineering education, Sheryl returns to a core idea: better infrastructure delivery depends on better collaboration, better data, and better systems for bringing all voices and expertise into the work.Key takeawaysWhy Canada's lack of a national digital transformation strategy leaves infrastructure delivery behind its fellow G7 countries; How equity, diversity, and inclusion connect directly to better engineering education and on-the-ground outcomes; What's possible with a true, human-focused, collaborative IPD approach to infrastructure; Why collaboration requires aligned incentives, shared risk, shared reward, and trust—not just new tools; How AI could improve the efficiency and completeness of information commissioning and handover practices.Quote: “If people don't feel included, if it's not diverse, if all voices aren't being heard, it's not successful.” - Sheryl Staub-FrenchThe conversation doesn't stop here—connect and converse with our community via LinkedIn:Follow Navigating Major Programmes: https://www.linkedin.com/company/navigating-major-programmes/Read Riccardo's latest at www.riccardocosentino.comFollow Evgenia Jilina: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ejilina/ Follow Sheryl Staub-French: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sstaubfrench/

The Power of Purpose for Small Firm ArchitectsCharles Hendricks believes that building better communities through architecture starts with purpose, service, and empathy. In this episode, he shares how a high school drafting class sparked a career that led to leading a small award-winning firm dedicated to people, place, and lasting impact. He explains why architects have the opportunity to shape stronger communities both through design and through the way they lead.Along the way, Charles discusses how community involvement, mentorship, and sustainable thinking have influenced his practice for more than 27 years. He also shares why building science, aging in place, and continuous learning remain central to his work. As a result, his firm approaches every project with the goal of creating meaningful value beyond the building itself.Charles also explores what it means to run a purpose-driven architecture firm in today's changing world. He encourages architects to see their businesses as platforms for service, education, and positive change. This conversation offers practical inspiration for firm owners who want their work to leave a lasting legacy. This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, The Power of Purpose for Small Firm Architects with Charles Hendricks. How can architecture firms unlock decades of buried institutional knowledge, and what happens to the apprenticeship model when every detail the firm has ever drawn is just a single query away?In this bonus episode of Practice Disrupted, host Evelyn Lee dives into a conversation created with Pirros, exploring how technology bridges the gap between historic firm data and daily production workflows. The episode features Ross Wagner, who leads sales at Pirros, alongside Xander Ellenbogen, a senior BIM manager at Clark Nexsen. Together, they explore how firms can transition from hunting through endless subfolders to operating with an intelligent, centralized knowledge base.Ross shares his trajectory from designing high-rise residential projects to riding the technology wave at PlanGrid and Autodesk, eventually joining Pirros to help firms maximize their workflow efficiency. Xander provides an on-the-ground perspective from Clark Nexsen, discussing his evolution from a traditional architect and the firm's first commercial drone pilot to managing advanced BIM workflows. He explains how his firm used Pirros to adapt to a post-COVID, discipline-based model, allowing team members across multiple offices and states to access vetted, high-quality details instantaneously. The conversation digs deeply into the broader implications of AI in the AECO space, specifically addressing the common comparison to the historical CAD-to-BIM shift. While the CAD-to-BIM transition still resulted in flat 2D drawing deliverables, the guests argue that AI represents a fundamentally different leap focused on data portability and knowledge preservation across an entire firm. They also tackle the crucial element of change management in a trust-driven profession, outlining the "sandwich effect" required to achieve widespread software adoption from leadership down to production staff."We're not here to flatten creativity and just be a place where you copy and paste. It's a place where you learn, you mentor, but also ensure that you don't go through the tedious tasks of reinventing the wheel each time and basically spend a bunch of hours hunting for something that you are trying to learn from." - Ross WagnerFinally, they look ahead to the future of design with recent tools like Mira, a Revit agentic copilot, and discuss how firms can maintain the critical thinking required in the traditional apprenticeship model while letting AI do the tedious heavy lifting.GuestsRoss Wagner, Assoc. AIA, began his career in architecture before moving into design technology, where he helped scale PlanGrid from under $10M to over $100M in ARR before its acquisition by Autodesk. Now Head of Sales at Pirros, he helps AECO firms improve productivity by transforming historical design content into trusted, accessible knowledge.Xander Ellenbogen, AIA, is a licensed architect and Senior BIM Manager at Clark Nexsen, where he leads BIM standards, Revit workflows, and reality capture initiatives across the firm. With a background spanning architectural design and BIM leadership, he is currently directing a firmwide template rebuild as part of the JMT merger while continuing to serve as an Associate Principal. This episode is especially for you if:✅You want to understand how Pirros captures a firm's historical work into an intelligent, AI-based search engine to prevent team members from redrawing existing details.✅ You are curious about the "sandwich effect" in change management and how to secure software buy-in from both firm leadership and production staff.✅ You want to explore why the CAD-to-BIM shift failed to move past 2D deliverables and how the AI shift focuses on data portability instead.✅ You want to learn how firms can preserve the traditional apprenticeship model by using AI to handle 70% of the baseline work while keeping designers focused on the remaining 30% of critical problem-solving.✅ You are interested in the potential of agentic workflows in Revit, such as Pirros' recently released chatbot copilot, Mira. What have you done to take action lately? Can you build a robot the same way you vibe code software? Not even close. In this episode of KP Unpacked, KP Reddy and Nick sit down with Guy German, CEO of Okibo, to unpack why programming motion control got 10x easier but building robots still requires years of field testing. Guy breaks down the three requirements for general-purpose construction robots: physical capability (reach, payload, battery life), tool flexibility (spray guns, rollers, power tools, dust collectors), and intelligence (real-time perception, work plan generation). Humanoids fail all three for construction. Chinese robots require pre-fitted BIM data that doesn't exist in reality. Okibo deploys on messy job sites with no prep, no perfect drawings, just LiDAR and situational awareness. The conversation moves from why construction has the highest suicide rate (cognitive overload plus physical toll) to why workers retire with permanent damage after 30 years (carpal syndrome, can't bend arms from overhead work). Guy shares a story: a veteran worked with Okibo robots for one week during a pilot. When it ended, he begged to keep the robot. His health improved that much. The insight? This isn't about productivity. It's about safety and empathy to the worker. Then they tackle why VCs forgot the venture part of venture capital. If you're showing a hardware prototype and the VC asks about traction, leave the meeting. They've disqualified themselves.Key questions answered:Can you vibe code a robot the same way you vibe code software? What are the three requirements for general-purpose construction robots? Why do humanoids fail all three requirements for construction work? How is the Chinese construction robotics approach different from Okibo's?Why does construction have the highest suicide rate of any industry? What happens to workers' bodies after 30 years of overhead drywall work? Why did a veteran beg to keep the Okibo robot after a one-week pilot? What's Okibo's data advantage from deploying across 3M square feet? Why is skilled labor shortage real (and getting worse)? What should you do if a VC asks for traction on a hardware prototype? Why is the capital stack the biggest impediment to construction robotics? Is physical AI the biggest technology wave of our lifetime? If you're building hardware and getting asked about traction, wondering whether robots can work without perfect BIM models, or trying to understand why safety and worker empathy matter more than productivity metrics, this episode will show you why the physical world is messier than code, and why that's exactly where the opportunity lives.Listen now.
Building an AI Ready Architecture FirmBuilding an AI ready architecture firm is quickly becoming one of the most important challenges facing architects today. In this episode of the EntreArchitect Podcast, Michelle Hamilton shares how firms can move beyond simply experimenting with AI and begin building real systems for long-term success. Drawing from decades in architecture and enterprise AI, she explains why successful adoption always starts with people.Michelle spent more than 30 years in commercial real estate and the AEC industry before stepping into the world of enterprise AI. Through her work leading AI adoption at AnswerRocket, she saw a pattern repeat itself: companies invest heavily in technology, but fail to prepare teams to actually use it. As a result, even powerful tools often fall short of their potential.Michelle shares practical insights for architecture firm owners who want to embrace AI with confidence. She explains how small firms can improve workflows, create stronger internal processes, and foster innovation without feeling overwhelmed. Recorded live at the Vertical Design Build Summit 2025, Dillon Mitchell delivers a presentation on AI, BIM automation, and the future of construction. He shares how his firm built automation tools that can place thousands of devices in a 320,000 sq ft building in minutes instead of months, why the labor shortage means technology adoption is no longer optional, and how to actually implement AI and automation without waiting for perfection. Dillon also breaks down a simple three-step system for training your team — record, watch, review — and makes the case that the real competitive advantage in construction isn't just the tools you use, but teaching your people how to think.

Gary responds to an article published by Baptist News written by Mara Richards Bim about the recent report released by President Trump's Justice Department. Bim is very selective in her reporting, and what she will accept as "historical evidence" (it must come from a PhD "expert"), and discounts many Christian writers for their lack of doctorates, yet never deals with their actual claims. Gary points out her own historical ignorance. Read the article here: https://baptistnews.com/article/anti-christian-bias-report-exalts-calvinism-and-lies-as-normative/
