Welcome to 听故事说中文, the podcast where stories come alive to help you improve your Chinese language proficiency and cultural competency.  Today's story is a memoir about Mr. Yang (Yang Zhenning), an elderly man who loved driving well into his eighties, and the writer (his wife) who eventually took over behind the wheel. It's full of small, vivid moments: driving on the wrong side of the road in Hong Kong, an air conditioner that died mid-mountain on a sweltering day, a terrifying near-miss on the edge of a cliff on Tai Mo Shan, and a stubborn old man who never seemed to worry about any of it. But underneath the close calls and the laughs, there's something quieter going on — about getting older, about who takes the wheel when, and about the simple joy of exploring the hills and trails of Hong Kong together. It's a story about adventure, trust, and the kind of memories that get funnier the longer you carry them. - Rui & Simeng ************************************************************ Support Our Podcast Support Our Podcast → https://www.patreon.com/learningchinesethroughstories If our podcast brings value to your life and you'd like to help us keep creating great content, consider becoming a patron for as little as $9 a month. Solomon reflects on the unexpected nature of this move, which follows a friendly encounter between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the World Cup.The episode also covers a shocking explosion outside a federal building in New York City, resulting in the arrest of a soldier linked to anti-ICE activism. Solomon addresses the media's handling of these events, particularly calling out a misleading segment from David Ignatius on Morning Joe regarding the implications of Chinese meddling in U.S. elections. He emphasizes the importance of transparency and the need for accurate reporting on such critical issues.Later, Solomon welcomes Congresswoman Laurel Lee from Florida, who served as Secretary of State during a time when China allegedly compromised voter files. She shares her experiences and whether she was alerted by federal authorities about these breaches. Welcome to Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu. In today's deep dive, Tom unpacks why economic analysts missed the mark when predicting oil prices amid the ongoing war in Iran. Despite forecasts of oil soaring to $200 a barrel, prices unexpectedly plummeted—even as major shipping routes were disrupted and military tensions escalated. Tom takes us through a detailed timeline of the conflict, examines the surprising role of China's shrinking oil demand, and reveals how outdated economic assumptions failed to account for a global downturn already brewing beneath the headlines. By connecting supply, demand, and the hidden frailties of both the Chinese and U.S. economies, Tom explains why falling demand—not war or supply shocks—now holds the key to understanding the global market's future. Whether you're an investor, entrepreneur, or simply curious about the forces shaping our world, this episode exposes the deeper story behind today's economic anxiety and offers practical strategies for navigating uncertain times.Sign up for my AI Masterclass: https://tombilyeu.com/ai-masterclass?utm_campaign=TBS-Livestream&utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social Check us out wherever you get your podcasts:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/1nARKz2vTIOb7gC9dusE4b?si=a8daffd2bf1f48fdApple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tom-bilyeus-impact-theory/id1191775648Do you need my help STARTING a business? A parasite is crawling across 34 states, with thousands of confirmed cases across America. Cyclospora is causing that explosive diarrhea, aka the parasite flu, you've no doubt heard about in the news. In this episode, Dr. Chris Motley lays out the facts about what we know, his best advice for avoiding contamination and your full treatment options from both modern and ancient science. In this episode you'll learn: Cyclospora is a protozoan parasite that can go dormant or activate depending on how strong your immune system is. The gross part: People infected with Cyclospora shed oocysts in their feces which can contaminate food or water.  Symptoms to look out for: watery diarrhea that won't go away (this is the big indicator), bone-deep fatigue you can't shake off, explosive bowel movements and loss of appetite. Prevention: Soak your produce thoroughly with an apple cider vinegar and baking soda wash, but most importantly...Cook your produce! Heat kills this parasite. Keep an eye on restaurant reports as much as possible. It's not always possible to know where your favorite restaurant sources its food, but be on the lookout for information about where they get their food and how careful they are with their ingredients. Steps to take if you are potentially infected: Ask to be tested for cyclospora specifically, by name, because it won't be included in routine tests. Treatment options:  1) The antibiotic - it's called TMP - SMX (Trimethoprim - sulfamethoxazole). Brand names are Bactrim or Septra. Standard treatment is a 7 to 10 day course, with longer courses for folks with weakened immune systems. 2) Anti-parasitics - Ivermectin, Fenbendazole 3) Ancient Medicine - Huang Lian is an ancient Chinese herb that cools the gut. Check out the brand Golden Flower. Natural anti-parasitics: Wormwood or Black Walnut: https://shorturl.at/0i5c8 Mimosa Pudica: https://shorturl.at/EPIO0 Morinda: https://shorturl.at/aCP7n You can also try a parasite cleanse. Join Jim and Greg for the Tuesday 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss Twitch streamer Hasan Piker's love and admiration for Mao Zedong, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani's threat to have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested, the U.S. Treasury stopping nearly $100 million in payments bound for dead people, and Daniel Ortega scrapping elections in Nicaragua for good.First, Jim and Greg react to a clip of Hasan Piker calling the Chinese communist dictator Mao Zedong "one of the great leaders of this world" and "a man who changed the entire universe," insisting he never has and never will criticize him. Jim and Greg remind us that Mao's Great Leap Forward starved tens of millions of his own people to death in what's considered the deadliest famine in history.Next, they dig into Mamdani saying on a New York Times podcast that Prime Minister Netanyahu "belongs in The Hague" and wanting to arrest Netanyahu if he visits the city for September's U.N. General Assembly. Jim says the mayor has no legal authority to do so, and President Trump has already said that Netanyahu will not be taken into custody on American soil. Then, Jim and Greg welcome some good news as the Treasury stopped nearly $100 million in payments to deceased recipients, more than triple what was caught before Trump returned to office. The Treasury says its new verification system could stop up to $350 million in fraudulent payments before the year is out. Jim and Greg agree that while this may be a drop in the bucket compared to the national debt, any improvements should be celebrated. Finally, they cover Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega abolishing elections, effectively extending his term indefinitely and closing off any path for the opposition to take over. Jim and Greg note the 80-year-old has been around for decades. The Reagan administration famously supported the Contra freedom fighters against Ortega's Sandinista government in the 1980s.Please visit our great sponsors: BetterHelpDon't let stigma stand in the way of support. Many AI researchers believe mass job displacement is coming — and some even think there's a chance their technology will kill everyone. But they're building it anyway. Writer and journalist Jasmine Sun has been documenting why from the inside.Jasmine describes her work as an “anthropology of disruption.” She's embedded herself in Silicon Valley's AI subcultures — attending the parties and conferences, conducting off-the-record interviews — to understand the beliefs of the small group of people shaping this technology. Some of her findings are unsettling. Asked what advice they'd give a normal 17-year-old, almost every AI researcher said the same thing: “I have no idea… It's a really scary time. I don't think there's going to be a lot of jobs for them left.”Their motives for building advanced AI are varied: a mix of optimism for humanity, techno-determinism, and a desire to secure their own future in the face of a possible “permanent underclass.” A few go even further, actually hoping for a world where machines — rather than humans — are running the show. When the room can't even agree on whether humans should stay in control, building a consensus on how to build AI safely gets much harder.Beyond Silicon Valley, Jasmine's also tracking the rise of “AI populists,” who see AI as the latest example of corporate elites concentrating their power at the expense of everyone else. In the US, populist sentiment about AI has mostly manifested in protests and votes against data centres. But sometimes, it has escalated into violence: a molotov cocktail thrown at Sam Altman's house, and open fire on the home of a politician who'd backed a data centre. Jasmine thinks public anger will keep finding an outlet, one way or another, until people feel like they'll actually share in AI's gains. In this interview with host Zershaaneh Qureshi, Jasmine Sun takes us inside the multifarious factions on AI's bleeding edge. They also discuss:How “doomer” became the lowest-status label in Silicon Valley, and what that means for AI safetyWhy the AI industry's PR strategy has failed, and what it would take to rebuild public trustWhat's under the surface of the Chinese public's much more positive response to AIJasmine's reasons to be cautiously hopeful: it's an unusually high-leverage time to work on AI safety, with policymakers and philanthropists hungry for good ideasThis episode was recorded on June 4, 2026.Links to learn more, video, and full transcript: https://80k.info/jasmineWant to get up to speed on AI? Eric Olander, editor-in-chief of the China Global South Project, joins the pod to discuss the developments on the other side of the globe. From Ho Chi Minh City, Eric explains how the Global South actually sees the US-Iran war, why nobody expects China to ride to anyone's rescue, and how Vietnam's tariff and energy shocks became a never-again moment. He and Jacob dig into the myth that tariffs can implode China, America's fading China literacy, and why the next order won't be Chinese-led - but China will be its transformational character.*Note: There are some weird buzzing sounds in the pod, we know! How big of a deal is it that 220 million Americans have had voter data compromised by the Chinese? There are currently only about 205 million registered American voters! What this means is that over the course of several years the Chinese successfully extracted effectively every registered voter's information along with 15 to 20 million people who no longer are eligible to vote (many deceased).

In this episode of NucleCast, Adam sits down with Paul Amato for an in-depth discussion on the role of theater nuclear weapons in maintaining U.S. deterrence and strategic stability. Drawing on historical lessons from the Cold War and examining today's evolving security environment, they explore why low-yield nuclear capabilities remain an important component of U.S. defense strategy. The conversation examines Russian and Chinese nuclear approaches, the development of low-yield nuclear options in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review, and the operational realities of deploying and sustaining theater nuclear forces. Amato explains how capability diversity, alliance assurance, and extended deterrence contribute to strategic stability and why maintaining credible options across the escalation spectrum is critical to deterring adversaries. They also discuss common misconceptions about low-yield weapons, the importance of capability symmetry, and what the future nuclear force structure may require as global threats continue to evolve.Paul Amato is the Principal Advisor for Strategic and Nuclear Deterrence at CNA. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. From 2016-2025, Amato was director of nuclear deterrence policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy, where he and his team led all facets of nuclear deterrence policy development, implementation and allied extended deterrence, including overseeing development and implementation of both the 2018 and 2022 Nuclear Posture Reviews. 读书会链接:https://luma.com/buwyzrkk We have two book club events coming up soon! "Taiwan Travelogue" In-Person Book Club: On August 9th, we'll be hosting an in-person book club for Taiwan Travelogue at Accent Sisters, a Chinese-language independent bookstore in New York. The story follows a young Japanese novelist who travels to Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period in 1938, hoping to eat and dress her way across the island. Along the way, she falls in love with her female translator, but struggles to overcome the gulf between colonizer and colonized. The book won this year's International Booker Prize, making it the first Chinese-language original work to receive the award. Book club link: https://luma.com/yayseynm On July 24th, we'll be reading Patrick McGee's bestselling book Apple in China together online. The book offers a detailed account of how Apple built one of the most complex and efficient manufacturing and supply chain systems in modern history in China. It also tells the story of how China became a crucial pillar of the world's most valuable company. Author Patrick McGee will join us for the final 30 minutes of the event to answer questions. Miist is a Billboard-charting artist and author whose life reads like it shouldn't be possible — abandoned at five, a terminal cancer survivor, and a self-taught songwriter who didn't pick up a pen until her 30s. That unlikely path produced over 100 compositions, a historic chart debut as the first native Chinese artist on Billboard's Pop/AC chart, and now a debut book, Make Me Smile with Miist — part memoir, part mental health guide, part philosophy — built around the simple idea that small moments of connection can change everything.Find Miist and Make Me Smile with Miist online:Miist - HomepageMake Me Smile with Miist - BookMiist - FacebookMiist - InstagramMiist - XFind me online:This Sustainable Life: Solve For Nature Podcast: https://shows.acast.com/solvefornatureBlog: https://verdantgrowth.blog/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/verdantgrowthBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/verdantgrowth.bsky.socialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/realverdantgrowthInstagram: http://instagram.com/verdant.growth or http://instagram.com/verdantgrowthofficial Hosted on Acast. The C919, China's domestically developed narrowbody passenger jet, will begin its first scheduled international commercial service next month, a step industry experts said will test the aircraft's ability to operate beyond domestic markets and help build confidence for wider overseas expansion. The daily round-trip service, operated by Air China, will connect Beijing Capital International Airport and Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Mongolia from Aug 12, the airline said. According to the schedule, outbound flight CA723 will depart Beijing at 3 pm Beijing time and arrive in Ulaanbaatar at 5:15 pm local time. The return flight, CA724, will leave Ulaanbaatar at 6:30 pm local time and arrive in Beijing at 8:35 pm Beijing time. The route marks the first time the C919, manufactured by Commercial Aircraft Corp of China, will enter a regular international commercial passenger aviation market. Previously, the aircraft has operated mainly on Chinese mainland routes, as well as services connecting the mainland with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. China Eastern Airlines launched the aircraft on scheduled flights between Shanghai and Hong Kong in January 2025, while Air China began regular C919 services between Beijing and Hong Kong in November. Choosing Ulaanbaatar as the first regular international destination is not a move to lower the entry barrier or test the waters," said Zhu Keli, founding director of the China Institute of New Economy. Zhu said the decision reflected a combination of factors including aviation cooperation between China and Mongolia, airworthiness cooperation arrangements, operational safety and route economics. China and Mongolia have maintained stable civil aviation cooperation, with a relatively mature framework for airworthiness cooperation," Zhu said. "The airport environment is relatively straightforward, the flight distance is moderate and the aircraft can complete a round trip within a day, allowing domestic technical support to respond quickly if operational issues arise." The route also has established business and tourism demand, making it suitable for regular commercial operations rather than serving only as a demonstration flight, Zhu said. He said the first international route is aimed at validating the full process of cross-border operations, including overseas maintenance support, international air traffic coordination and customs procedures. Ulaanbaatar is more like a low-risk practical training ground where the C919 can accumulate real overseas operating data and build a replicable model for future international expansion," Zhu said. Guo Jia, a civil aviation expert and professor at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies' South China Business College, said safety considerations were the primary factor behind the selection of the first international destination. He said Air China's previous experience operating the C909 regional jet to Ulaanbaatar, along with the airline's assessment of airport handling and maintenance capabilities, also supported the route choice. For the Chinese aviation industry, the significance of the route extends beyond the flight itself, experts said. Previously, C919 operations were mainly based on China's domestic airspace and supporting infrastructure," Zhu said. "This scheduled international route means the aircraft is entering a regular commercial passenger aviation system between countries." The operation will help establish overseas support capabilities, including maintenance cooperation, spare parts arrangements and international operating procedures, Zhu said. Guo said international expansion would require more than aircraft performance. "Aircraft sales, international operations and market expansion all need to comply with the airworthiness standards of different countries and regions," Guo said, adding that broader international communication and certification efforts would be necessary. Guo added that overseas maintenance, aircraft support and route support capabilities would be among the key challenges for international operations. Looking ahead, experts expect the C919's international expansion to be gradual. "C919's internationalization will not follow an aggressive model of rapidly launching a large number of routes," Zhu said. After validating operations in Ulaanbaatar, the aircraft will likely expand first into short-haul international markets in Central Asia and Southeast Asia, allowing it to accumulate experience under different operating conditions, Zhu said. The priority is to complete the transition from zero to one — making the first international route operate safely and accumulating experience," Guo said. "Only after establishing overseas safety operation and maintenance standards should the C919 move from one route to multiple routes.郭佳称:“当下首要任务是完成从0到1的突破,保障首条国际航线安全运行、沉淀实操经验。只有建立成熟的境外安全运营与维修标准后,C919才能从单条航线拓展至多条国际航线。”"Airworthiness certification is indeed one of the biggest barriers for the C919 entering mainstream European and US markets," Zhu said.朱克力表示:“适航认证,确实是C919进入欧美主流市场最大阻碍之一。”He said certification by authorities such as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the US Federal Aviation Administration would be essential, while airlines' familiarity with the aircraft, maintenance networks, leasing systems and market recognition would also influence adoption.他表示,获取欧盟航空安全局、美国联邦航空管理局等机构的适航认证至关重要;同时航司对机型的熟悉度、全球维修网络、飞机租赁体系以及市场认可度,都会影响各国引进该机的意愿。narrowbody /ˈnærəʊbɒdi/窄体客机airworthiness /ˈeəwɜːðinəs/适航性certification /ˌsɜːtɪfɪˈkeɪʃn/认证infrastructure /ˈɪnfrəstrʌktʃə(r)/基础设施short-haul /ˌʃɔːt ˈhɔːl/短途的maintenance /ˈmeɪntənəns/维修,维护
