Long shots don't always pan out the way you hoped. Sometimes they catch fire. Sometimes they mug you. Shauna McGarry, a TV writer who can't shake her mother's thrift-store instincts, talks herself into a $2,500 used hot tub from a shady Craigslist dealer named Dan. Things don't turn out so great. David Crabb waitered through the days after 9/11 at one of the only open restaurants in lower Manhattan, listening to strangers unburden themselves over candlelight. By the end of the week he'd saved $900 for a U-Haul, and on the walk home from his last shift, drunk and carrying a magnum of wine, he felt an arm clamp around his neck and something jab into his ribs. I almost never talk about the old stories, but today I'm pulling one back out because I think it might be exactly what you need right now. When I moved to Dallas fresh out of Baylor University with $63 to my name and no real plan, I had one thing going for me: I believed in the person in the mirror. What came next was unglamorous hustle through Craigslist free sections and Half Price Books, and it taught me something I've never forgotten about desperation, discipline, and investing in your future even when you're in survival mode. The real lesson here is not about what I did to survive. It is about why I never stopped building while I was just trying to get by. Key Takeaways Belief in yourself is a strategy. When I had no plan, no money, and no clear path, belief in the person in the mirror was the one asset I held onto that made everything else possible. Plan B is just making sure Plan A works. Do not build an exit strategy out of your own dream. Your fallback should be doubling down on yourself. Desperation and discipline both produce solutions. People who want it badly enough and people who are committed enough will find a way forward even when it is not pretty. Effectiveness matters more than appearance. Stop asking if something looks good and start asking if it works. Unglamorous effort that gets results beats a polished plan that goes nowhere. Even in survival mode, invest in your future. Put a portion of whatever you have toward where you want to go, or you will burn out running a hamster wheel with no destination. Action Steps Look yourself in the mirror today and honestly assess whether there is real fire behind your goal or whether it is just something you say. If the fire is gone, find out why before you take another step. Identify one unglamorous but effective action you can take right now to generate momentum toward your goal, even if it is something you would never post about on social media. Set aside a defined portion of your time or money, even if it is small, and commit it specifically to building your future self rather than just managing your present circumstances. Notable Quote If you truly want it bad enough, if you look yourself in the mirror and you literally see fire in your eyes, you'll find a way. It's not always glamorous, but you'll find a way.

After nearly 30 years in the industry, he has watched newspapers move from being the dominant civic voice in town to fighting for survival in a world shaped by Craigslist, Cars.com, social media, shrinking newsrooms, and now AI.But Clint does not talk about newspapers with nostalgia. He talks about them as mission.Local newspapers are not just businesses. They are civic infrastructure. They are archivists, watchdogs, conveners, mirrors, and defenders of the First Amendment. They record the story of a place. They cover school boards, city councils, local elections, public institutions, infrastructure fights, community victories, and warning signs that no national outlet will ever care enough to cover. And when they disappear, the information does not disappear. The verification disappears. The context disappears. The accountability disappears.Clint makes the case that healthy local media is one of the last remaining foundations of healthy civic life. As he says in the conversation, the press is the only industry named directly in the U.S. Constitution. That means newspapers carry a responsibility that goes far beyond content, clicks, ads, or subscriptions.Nick, Joe, and Clint explore what happens when a community loses its paper, why opinion pages and letters to the editor still matter, how local media can preserve balanced civic conversation, and why communities should not take their local newspaper for granted. They also discuss the difference between real reporting and content generation, why AI should not replace original journalism, how young people consume news, and what it would take to rebuild local news in places that have become news deserts.

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains discussions of child sexual abuse.  Please listen with caution. According to 18-year-old killer Miranda Barbour, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen she participated in a cross-country satanic killing spree that claimed at least twenty-two victims. While those claims have never been substantiated, what was proven in court was the brutal murder of 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara. Using a fake Craigslist ad offering sex, Miranda lured Troy to a meeting under false pretenses. Then, she and her husband, Elytte Barbour, carried out a savage and premeditated attack that left Troy dead in a ditch on the side of the road. In the aftermath, Miranda stunned investigators by claiming she was not "just" a murderer, but a serial killer whose body count stretched across the country. Whether those confessions were fact, fantasy, or something in between remains a matter of debate, but the tragic murder of Troy LaFerrara was horrifyingly real. Together, they'll explore trust, cybersecurity, and the building blocks of resilient civic institutions. Newmark has become a deeply consequential civic leader of the internet age. Best known for creating Craigslist—a platform celebrated for its radical simplicity and user-first ethos—he has spent the last two decades supporting philanthropy that strengthens democracy. His work spans cybersecurity ("cyber civil defense"), veterans and military families, trustworthy journalism, and combating misinformation. In an era of growing polarization and distrust, Newmark's approach is guided by one pragmatic question: what actually works? Returning to the stage at 92NY after two sold-out programs, Cowen will talk with Newmark about the pivotal choices behind Craigslist and the lessons he has drawn from years of public-interest work, exploring how to safeguard civic trust and apply solutions-driven principles in today's digital world.

In April 2009, a young woman named Julissa Brisman was found bleeding in the doorway of a luxury Boston hotel room after a violent struggle with a client she met through Craigslist. Just four days earlier, another woman had been tied up and robbed inside a nearby hotel by a man matching the exact same description. As investigators raced to stop what appeared to be an escalating pattern of violence, they uncovered a trail of burner phones, fake identities, hotel surveillance footage, and anonymous online messages that eventually led them to an unlikely suspect. It was a clean cut medical student named Philip Markoff who was secretly living a double life while planning his upcoming wedding. Our other podcast: "FEARFUL" - https://open.spotify.com/show/56ajNkLiPoIat1V2KI9n5c?si=OyM38rdsSSyyzKAFUJpSywMERCH:https://www.redbubble.com/people/wickedandgrim/shop?asc=uPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/wickedandgrim?fan_landing=trueYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@wickedlifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wickedandgrim/ Instagram:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wickedandgrim/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/wickedandgrimWebsite: https://www.wickedandgrim.com/

Brad's Friday game night exists because he got uncomfortable during COVID and started networking. That group of strangers a travel agent, Microsoft expert, idea coach, and HR consultant became the friends now playing ridiculous word games together. More importantly, they became the network that solves real business problems. That network paid off when a client texted Friday at 10:30 AM needing 2,000 square feet of outdoor storage space by Monday. Brad connected them with a trucking client who had yard space, solving the problem in hours. Business owners who don't build networks miss these opportunities constantly. Most business owners default to Craigslist or calling their CPA for referrals instead of developing real relationships with their service providers. The commercial insurance agent, financial planner, and even personal insurance broker are sitting on valuable networks but only if you actually build relationships beyond paying invoices.Brad challenges all the bankers, lawyers, and CPAs listening: stop accepting "I'm too busy" as an answer. Go have coffee with your blue collar clients. Learn who they are beyond the annual meeting. This tight-knit community rewards those who show up and provide real value. For technicians going into homes, be curious about the homeowners. They know tons of people and run businesses. A simple conversation about their work can lead to referrals neither party expected. The window installer who showed up with a trailer organized to the nines got Brad's referrals because that trailer opening signaled competence.Highlights:Brad solved a client's emergency storage crisis in hours by connecting two people in his network. Most business owners only contact service providers when paying bills or fixing problems not building relationships.Your commercial insurance agent, financial planner, and banker have networks you're not tapping into.Technicians should be curious about homeowners - they run businesses and know people who need referrals. Is your network limited to the people you already know? In this extra sweet episode, Victoria walks us through how a $25 Craigslist ice cream maker and a promise to herself led to Ice Cream Jubilee, the award-winning DC-area business celebrated by Food & Wine, the Washington Post, and Thrillist, and what it felt like to eventually sell the business she'd spent nearly a decade building. OG co-host Paul Kent rejoins Dave Hamilton to talk about how The Houserockers have stayed booked into their 27th year, and what your band can steal from their playbook. You’ll dig into the social media reality of 2026 (Reels are currently king), why your mailing list is the asset you actually own, and how to grow to 10,000 followers without losing your soul. Paul makes the case that if you want gigs, your band has to be a business, which means alignment on mission, passion, and musical style with the partners or employees standing next to you on stage. There’s nothing wrong with playing for fun, but go in eyes wide open about what you’re chasing. From there you’ll dive into the value of scarcity, Kevin Kelly’s thousand true fans, and why mixing up your setlists is one way to keep audiences coming back. Paul breaks down the current Houserockers formula (civic concert series, experiential marketing, and ticketed off-season events) and why aging-up audiences mean you have to market harder and talk to fans like Springsteen does: a lifetime conversation, all with individuals. You’ll also get the real talk on finding bandmates (Craigslist included), the Gig Gab bookable-band checklist, and Paul’s (joking?) pitch for two new show segments. The gang kicks things off with chaos before the coffee even hits — Lern forgets her headphones, Rafe and King Scott recap their suspiciously romantic Alamo Drafthouse “date night,” and somehow a horror movie promo turns into a discussion about cursed wish sticks and meat sandwiches. Totally normal behavior for a daily comedy show. Then the show spirals beautifully into creepy Craigslist tornado bunker ads, haunted South City basements, mannequin roommates named Cheryl, and why every adult still turns into a terrified 9-year-old at the dentist. Add in parallel parking panic, scary medical test notifications, and Apple Store rage, and you've got another emotionally stable episode of the Rizzuto Show comedy podcast. The crew gets hyped for Point Fest, shouts out local band Trevor May & The Nomads, and debates whether they're actually cooler now than they were in high school — which somehow leads to discussions about danglers, acne glow-ups, mysterious coolness rankings, and midlife-crisis trucks. Just a completely reasonable funny podcast conversation.Plus: Rafe gets weirdly philosophical about popularity, Lern overshares in ways no one requested, and the gang proves once again that aging gracefully is for quitters. Then it's straight into celebrity gossip, Tool Sphere rumors, Point Fest excitement, and enough sarcastic life advice to accidentally become a self-help seminar. Gas thieves are apparently leveling up from siphoning to full-on drilling holes in gas tanks, and the gang reacts exactly how you'd expect: with panic, truck jokes, and debates about whether giant lifted trucks are compensation for “something else.” Welcome to your favorite daily comedy podcast. Then the show dives into “Majority Rules,” where listeners attempt to match answers with the crew while Hurricane Chris accidentally invents a brand-new version of The Eagles featuring David Lee Roth. Throw in Game of Thrones confusion, celebrity guessing disasters, Point Fest ticket giveaways, and Rafe barely holding the game together, and you've got another masterpiece of organized nonsense from The Rizzuto Show. In this episode of Fraudology, Karisse Hendrick is joined by Robert Siciliano, a world-renowned security analyst, bestselling author, and the architect of the Strategic Human Firewall. While the industry often obsesses over technological solutions, Robert explores why humans—not hackers—remain the ultimate deciding factor in organizational security. The conversation dives deep into the "Human Blind Spot"—our biological instinct to trust that often overrides digital suspicion. Robert shares his unconventional journey from the streets of Boston to becoming a leading security educator, including the time he bought a working ATM on Craigslist to prove how easily data breaches can be purchased. We also explore the critical shift from "Security Awareness" to "Security Appreciation":The Compliance Trap: Why traditional phishing simulations and "check-the-box" training often lead to security fatigue and victim shaming. The Strategic Human Firewall: How to transform employees from passive targets into active detection layers by filtering intent rather than just traffic. The Kitchen Table Effect: Why the most effective security training is personal, encouraging employees to protect their families so they naturally protect their companies.Overcoming Fatalism: A direct look at why people resist security measures like password managers and home alarms, and how to bridge the "Appreciation Gap" through empathetic dialogue.

What if the connection that changes everything isn't the one you're chasing, but the one you almost overlooked? In this episode, Ron Nussbaum, Marine Corps veteran, founder of BuilderComs and Buildable Labs, and host of Construction Champions Podcast, shares how a knee injury in a swamp ended his military career and accidentally launched one of the most impactful entrepreneurial journeys in the construction industry. Ron didn't set out to build software. He set out to solve a problem nobody else was solving: the communication chaos that costs construction companies money, trust, and time every single day. And the relationships he built along the way, not the money, not the marketing, are what made it all possible.   [00:03:40] What He Does and Who He Serves Founder of BuilderComs, the messaging-first communication platform for construction teams Also runs Buildable Labs, a custom software firm built around each company's unique systems Hosts Construction Champions Podcast, one of the biggest in the industry [00:06:40] How He Got Here: From the Marines to Construction Planned to be a career Marine; a knee injury on a night training op ended that instantly Spotted a foreman-in-training ad on Craigslist and waited two weeks before applying The owner, an 82nd Airborne vet, hired him on the spot He had never swung a hammer on a house in his life [00:08:20] Finding His People on the Job Site Found the brotherhood and camaraderie he had lost when he left the Marines Knew he was behind in skill; outworked everyone instead Went from running a jackhammer to running an eight-figure business with 150 employees [00:11:40] Client Impact: The Veteran Who Almost Quit Was working with an Army veteran transitioning into a new line of business The week before the breakthrough, the client was ready to shut everything down Ron's message: stay at it, trust the vision, execute the plan Two weeks ago the client texted: first sale, all cash, $90,000 [00:15:20] The Relationship That Changed Everything Was pushed by a room of people to start the podcast even though he didn't feel called to it Used the podcast to finally get the attention of a major name in construction SaaS After recording, that person said: "You're real. What can I do for you?" He opened doors and a network Ron could never have accessed on his own [00:18:00] The Adjacent Relationship Principle The person who changes your life is rarely the one you're closest to It's usually someone adjacent to a relationship you've already invested in A woman he had met with weekly for three years made the introduction that mattered most Organic introductions from real relationships beat any marketing budget [00:23:00] Dinner and Dreams: How to Show Up Most people come into conversations asking what they can get The right approach: pitch a vision, listen 25 minutes out of 30, make your five minutes count The goal is to be what someone talks about at dinner and dreams about at night [00:28:20] The Ripple That Saved a Business The SaaS founder's belief in Ron kept him going through a season of serious doubt That validation led to a customer who told someone about the podcast That person and their partner were about to shut down; the podcast pulled them back Ron had no idea until they wrote to thank him; he later had them on as guests [00:32:20] Impact Is a Long-Term Play BuilderComs launched four and a half years ago with one goal: fix communication in construction Impact has to be genuine; people see through it the moment things get hard Ron has never taken outside capital; he will not let someone else's agenda drive his mission [00:37:20] Send the Ripple Anyway The person you connect two people with is probably not the one who will change their life It's the connection after that one that does it Ron sends introductions even when he has no logical reason; just a feeling In order for ripples to come back to you, you have to be sending them out   KEY QUOTES "When you have calls with people, it's not about closing anything. It's about dinner and dreams. You want that call to be what they talk about at dinner and what they dream about at night." - Ron Nussbaum "Every relationship I've built, it hasn't necessarily been the person I'm closest to that makes the greatest impact. It's the adjacent connection that changes everything." - Ron Nussbaum "In order for the ripples to come back your way, you have to be sending ripples somewhere." - Ron Nussbaum CONNECT WITH RON NUSSBAUM Podcast: http://www.constructionchampionspodcast.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ron-nussbaum Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ronwesley.nussbaum   Thanks for tuning in! Wanna know how to get a new client fast? If you need a client like *now*, the answer isn't a new funnel — it's getting scrappy, getting visible, and reminding people you exist. In this episode, Jenna Harding shares the strategies she's used (and seen her clients use) to book clients quickly — some polished, some unconventional, all proven. From wedding charcuterie boards to a cold Craigslist pitch that turned into a $20,000 job, this one's full of real stories that will get you thinking differently about how clients actually find you.In this episode, you'll hear tactics to get a new client fast (how about by Friday?) We'll cover:Why social media is the backbone of even your most "offline" client bookings — and what a college professor and an improv friend have to do with itThe near-100% conversion strategy Jenna's client Cassie Torres used as a wedding photographer (hint: it involved wine, cheese, and her living room)How a simple congratulations email to a past client led directly to a new contract — with zero pitchingThe Craigslist approach that landed a $20,000 client Where to look online for people who are actively searching for someone like you right nowWhy re-engaging past clients is the easiest sell you're not making What Jenna's Booked Out Offers clients brainstormed on their last call to get hired fastThe takeaway:The fastest path to getting a new client isn't complicated — it's a reach-out to someone who already knows you, likes you, and just forgot to call. Your network is warmer than you think. Go remind them what you do.

Craig Newmark's career, in retrospect, looks like a series of deliberate subtractions: he kept Craigslist plain, stepped aside as CEO early on, gave his equity to his foundation, and now funds people and gets out of their way. His theory, arrived at gradually, is that recognizing your limitations and relying on your network is how you get more done. Tyler and Craig discuss why webpage design has gotten worse for 30 years, what Craig's "obsessive customer service disorder" taught him about human nature, why trusting people and maintaining a nine-second rule for scams aren't as contradictory as they sound, why roommate ads are a better way to find love, why Craigslist never added seller evaluations, why Leonard Cohen speaks to him more than Bob Dylan, what William Gibson's Neuromancer got right about the internet, why Jackson Lamb is now one of his role models, why large foundations lose accountability, what two painful Ivy League grants taught him philanthropy, what he gets from rescuing pigeons, the hard lesson he learned about confronting people who lie for a living, his favorite TV shows and movies, the one genuine luxury he can't go without, what he still needs to learn, and much more.
