In the late hours of Saturday night 170 drones, 120 ballistic missiles, and 30 cruise missiles barreled toward Israel. It was a direct and unprecedented strike on Israel from Iran. Extraordinarily, Israel—with the help of the Americans, the British, the French, and even the Jordanians and the Saudis—were able to intercept 99 percent of the missiles.  Iran said the attack was a response to Israel's hit on a consular building in Syria earlier this month that killed high-ranking Iranian Revolutionary Guard commanders. Many analysts and journalists have also framed the attack the way Iran had: as a “retaliatory strike.” But it's a strange way to describe the historic onslaught considering Iran's war of aggression since October 7. After all, it was Iran that trained and armed Hamas to come and butcher 1,200 Israelis. It was Iran that trained and armed Hezbollah, whose attacks on northern Israeli communities have kept tens of thousands from their homes.  Free Press columnist Matti Friedman nailed it when he wrote that this weekend's attack was Iran coming out of the shadows for the first time: “like a flash going off in a dark room, the attack has finally given the world something valuable: a glimpse of the real war in the Middle East.”  Walter Russell Mead wrote on Twitter Saturday night: “By any reasonable standard, a state of war now exists between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The questions now are how fast and how far does it escalate, who will be drawn in, and who will win.” Today, Michael Moynihan speaks with Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States about these questions—and what comes next in this unprecedented moment in history. While the U.S. was instrumental in helping Israel defend itself over the weekend, Biden has been clear with Israel: he does not want Israel to respond. He is reported to have said to Netanyahu, “You got a win. Take the win.” But if Israel doesn't respond, will that only embolden Iran further? Isn't that the sort of appeasement that got us here in the first place? And if Israel is compelled to respond for the sake of its country, can it do so without American support? Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari confirmed the measures, which include suspending leave for combat units, blocking GPS signals in certain areas, and increasing manpower. *) Russia says destroyed over 40 airborne targets in Rostov-on-don The governor of Russia's Rostov-on-Don region has said air defence units destroyed more than 40 aerial targets, although an electricity substation was damaged. Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Vasily Golubev said the drone strikes had focused on the Morozovsk district, north-east of Rostov-on-Don, which lies on Ukraine's eastern border. *) Madagascar seeks removal of EU envoy who criticised law for child rapists Madagascar has demanded that the EU replace its ambassador to the island nation after she criticised a new law passed in February that allows child rapists to be chemically and surgically castrated. The request came after the EU's ambassador, Isabelle Delattre Burger, denounced the law contrary to international norms and Madagascar's constitution. The EU is evaluating the demand in consultation with the Malagasy government, with the regular rotation of ambassadors due in September. And finally… *) Missing dog found 2,000 miles from California home A dog that went missing in California has been found more than 3,000 kilometres away in suburban Detroit, leading to a dramatic reunion with her owners. Police picked up Mishka, a terrier mix who went missing last July, and took her to a shelter after a resident reported a stray dog near Harper Woods in the Midwestern state of Michigan. Staff at the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society found that she had a microchip that identified her owners live 3,771 kilometres away in San Diego — making it unclear how she had travelled so far. It's Monday, February 5th, A.D. 2024.  This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Theology professor fired for upholding Biblical sexual ethic A theology professor in Derbyshire, England, has been fired from a Methodist Bible university after sharing his Biblical beliefs on social media, reports International Christian Concern. Dr. Aaron Edwards, an employee at Cliff College for seven years, was dismissed for publicly criticizing the Methodist Church and its unbiblical views on marriage. Edwards' employer had accused him of “bringing the college into disrepute.” On February 19, 2023, Edwards tweeted, “Homosexuality is invading the Church. Evangelicals no longer see the severity of this because they're busy apologizing for their apparently barbaric homophobia, whether or not it's true. This is a ‘Gospel issue,' by the way. If sin is no longer sin, we no longer need a Saviour.” The professor's tweet drew push back from several homosexual groups, prompting Cliff College to call the post “unacceptable” and “inappropriate,” demanding the professor remove the tweet. Isaiah 5:20 describes perfectly both the push back of the homosexual groups and the cowardly, unbiblical Cliff College. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” Truth be told, Cliff College brought itself into disrepute. To his credit, Edwards refused to take down the post, arguing it would violate his conscience. He further pointed out that the post was not defamatory to any individual in particular and was, therefore, not in violation of the school's social media policy. Despite his sincere efforts, the school opened an investigation, leading to the professor's suspension and subsequent dismissal. Unbelievably,  school officials threatened to refer him to the U.K. government's counter terrorism and hate speech unit. Edwards is suing Cliff College for unfair firing and compensation under England's Equality Act. U.S. hits hard at militias in Iraq and Syria On Friday, the U.S. military launched an air assault on dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iranian-backed militias and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, reports the Associated Press. This was retaliation for the drone strike that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan last weekend. The massive barrage of strikes hit more than 85 targets at seven locations, including command and control headquarters, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, drone and ammunition storage sites that were connected to the militias or Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force. The Force is the Guard's expeditionary unit that handles Tehran's relationship with and arming of regional militias. The U.S. strikes appeared to stop short of directly targeting Iran or senior leaders of the Revolutionary Guard Quds Force within its borders, as the U.S. tries to prevent the conflict from escalating even further. Iran has denied it was behind the Jordan attack. Protesters rally in Texas against entry of illegal immigrants Here in America, hundreds of people converged Saturday in trucks, vans and RVs, in southern Texas to rally against what they say is an illegal immigrant "invasion," demanding tough new controls at the U.S. border with Mexico, reports AFP. Scrawled on the side of one of the vehicles reaching Quemado, Texas -- population 162 -- were the words "Join the God Fight." The convoy decided to gather in this tiny town along the Rio Grande river, which forms the natural border between the United States and Mexico, as debate swirls again about how to address record high illegal immigrant crossings. Hundreds of thousands of people from Central and South America, and beyond, have waded illegally across the river in recent months. But their huge numbers have become a galvanizing issue, especially ahead of the November presidential election, with Republicans in Congress blocking additional U.S. aid to Ukraine and Israel over demands that President Joe Biden does more to stop the flow. And so it is at tiny Quemado that the activist group calling itself "We the People" -- the first words in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution -- decided to meet and make their anger known. Under the slogan "Take our border back," these activists, traveling in convoys from the across the United States, have been arriving in towns along the border to camp -- and protest -- this past weekend. Anthony Pro-Life America to spend $100 million on presidential election A national pro-life advocacy organization aims to spend nearly $100 million and knock on over 4 million doors ahead of the 2024 presidential election, reports the Christian Post. The November election outcome could have major implications for the future of abortion policy in the United States. In a statement Thursday, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America announced it will collaborate with its partner organization Women Speak Out PAC to "spend $92 million and reach 10 million voters to protect life across America." The figure exceeds the $56 million spent in the 2020 election cycle and the $78 million the group pledged to spend during the 2022 midterm election cycle. The campaign's hundreds of thousands of volunteers will canvas in eight battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Bloody Mary's first Protestant martyr And finally, on February 4th, 1555, John Rogers, an English Protestant clergyman and Bible translator, was burned at the stake in England by Queen Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary.” She was determined to violently restore Roman Catholicism.    Translating the Bible into commonly spoken English, Rogers published The Matthew Bible under the pseudonym Thomas Matthew. Rogers' work constituted the first complete English Bible and commentary. On January 28 and 29, 1555, he came before the commission appointed by Catholic Cardinal Reginald Pole. He was sentenced to death by Catholic Bishop Stephen Gardiner for the so-called sin of denying the Christian character of the Church of Rome and the alleged real presence of Jesus Christ in the symbolic elements of bread and wine of Catholic communion. Even though Rogers was denied a meeting with his wife, he awaited and met death cheerfully. Shortly before his execution, Rogers was offered a pardon if he were to recant, but he refused. As he was marched to the site of his execution, the irrepressible John Rogers sang the Psalms. In John 16:2, Jesus said, “The time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.” Tragically, that is exactly what Bloody Mary thought, that she was offering a service to God by killing Protestant leaders who loved God's Word. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, President Biden is still silent on the Mar-A-Lago raid and the FBI director is in hiding. Newsweek reported that the raid was from a confidential human source. Trump's attorneys had met with the DOJ in June at Mar-A-Lago where the feds advised Trump to keep any classified documents behind a locked door. One DOJ leaker says that conducting the raid when Trump was out of town was done to minimize the spectacle of it. This is false, a raid conducted at dawn on a former US President would not go unnoticed. Then, under the plain view doctrine, law enforcement doesn't need to include every element they are investigating in a warrant. Therefore they say it's about presidential records, but it's likely that they are interested in anything they can find. It was not routine for lawyers to not be present during the raid or for the FBI to search the former First Lady's wardrobe. Later, the DOJ has charged a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for plotting the assassination of former Secretary of State and former National Security Advisor. Why is the Biden Administration still negotiating with Tehran if they are committing acts of war against this country? Afterward, reporter Julie Kelly calls in to discuss how several January 6th detainees have killed themselves seemingly because of the pressure. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard were said to be responsible.The damning evidence against the Trudeau government is that there was an HOC motion to list Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. Later, after Iran brought down the UIA airliner, Trudeau still hadn't followed through with designating the IRG a terrorist organization.Tom explains how he got involved in getting to the bottom of the Air India tragedy, which is really quite interesting.A disaster which largely falls on the Canadian government, which includes abuse of the survivors of all the victims. A history of utter neglect by the Canadian government certainly ties both  massacres together.--------------------Hour 2, segment 1:- Tom gets into the murder of a Canadian journalist, which was a result of the Air India bombing.The journalist was getting very close to exposing several key figures in Canada who were covering up the truth about the bombing.That case is cold, as well as that of another murder of a journalist in the UK who was also hot on the trail of discovering the truth of Air India.This is straight out of the former Soviet Union.The discussion returns to the UIA flight that was shot down, and Tom dissects the events which led up to the missile being fired.The working assumption of the shootdown, as Tom explains, should be one of something doing stupid.The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is further explored, as well as the rattling of the system post Soleimani assassination.Afghanistan is the focus of the remainder of the hour.We are still at the peak of the crisis, as Tom says. He mentions several malfunctions within the U.S. armed forces, including horrible accidents and a laughable, embarrassing wokeness.The military has a job to kill people and break things. It mustn't be involved in society, nor a platform for perverse social experimentation.That garbage and rot must be kept separate from our fighting forces. DARK RAIN by Dana Duthie Iran has planted families in American society to live American lives until their call came to spread death and destruction. In one day four devastating attacks on U.S. military targets kills hundreds of Americans. The Operations Director of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is pulling the strings. He threatens further daily attacks if the U.S. doesn’t pull completely out of the Mideast and if Israel doesn’t cease to exist. One of the “mole” pilots steals his F-16 and bomb off of nuclear alert at a U.S. base in Germany and flies it to Libya with the intent to follow it up with a nuclear attack on Tel Aviv. The U.S. President assembles a team of special operators to thwart further attacks on American soil, and launch a large scale attack, succeeding in destroying the Libyan base and recovering the fighter and its bomb. The main perpetrator is eliminated in Iran. The world is again “safe.” For now. Colonel Dana Duthie’s career as an Air Force fighter pilot is the basis for many of the experiences in his books. His Air Force career spanned 24 years, from pilot training in Georgia and instructor in Texas to the skies over Southeast Asia, and from flying the F-4 phantom in Germany to the F-16 Falcon in South Carolina, Korea and Germany. The theme of “Phantoms of the Shah” spawned from his tour with the 10th Tactical Fighter Squadron in Germany flying the F-4 during 1975-79. “Tremble” is based in South Korea where Duthie was a squadron commander of the 80th Fighter Squadron flying the F-16 in 1985/6. “Dark Rain” dwells on the twilight of the hero’s career as a Colonel in the Air Force and it has bits and pieces of Duthie’s total experiences as an Air Force fighter pilot. Colonel Duthie also “paid his dues” with three headquarters assignments and professional schooling. He retired from the Air Force in 1992. He lives in Broomfield and Steamboat Springs, Colorado with his wife. They have two children and three grandchildren nearby. Unfortunately this week we have an example of where safety was improved over the decades – but the growing tension in the world appears to have reversed some of the gains made. This is largely because of trigger-happy military personnel. Most passengers are blissfully unaware of just how close many commercial airliners have come to being shot down in the recent past, let alone during World Wars. This week we deal with the relatively recent shooting down of Ukraine Airlines SR 752 by the Iranian military. First a few examples of commercial airliners being shot out of the sky. As I mentioned briefly in an earlier podcast, the first known example was on 24 August 1938 during the Second Sino-Japanese War when a DC-2 known as the Kweilin operated by China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) was forced down by Japanese Aircraft inside Chinese territory just north of Hong Kong. The DC-2 was carrying 18 passengers and crew. Apparently all survived the emergency water landing, but not the follow up strafing run by the Japanese pilots. Fifteen died. The next reported commercial airliner shot down was the Kaleva OH-ALL incident on 14th June 1940- a civilian transport and passenger Junkers Ju 52-3/mge) operated by the Finnish carrier Aero O/Y. This time is was shot down by two Soviet Ilyushin DB-3 bombers while en route from Tallinn, Estonia, to Helsinki, Finland. The Soviet Soviet DB-3s bombers opened fire with machine guns and badly damaged Kaleva, causing it to ditch in water a few kilometers northeast of Keri lighthouse. All seven passengers and two crew members on board died. In episode three of this series, I explained how Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 was brought down by a Soviet-made Buk surface to air missile. All 283 passengers and 15 crew on board the Boeing 777-200 ER died when the missile hit the plane near Donetsk in the Eastern Ukraine. It was fired by separatist rebels who’d been using an older model Buk missile which was promptly wheeled back into Russia after the case of mistaken identity. And that brings us directly to the 8th January 2020 Ukraine International Airlines flight 752 Boeing 737-800 that was shot down by Iran’s armed forces shortly after take-off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, killing all 176 people on board. Initially, Iran denied responsibility suggesting an engine had blown up. Eventually on 11 January, three days after the incident, Iran said it unintentionally shot down the commercial airliner mistaking it for a hostile target. For a start, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was extremely jittery because they had fired dozens of missiles at American bases in Iraq only a few hours before. That was in response to General Qassim Suleimani being killed by an American Drone in Iraq in late 2019.

When Qassem Soleimani was assassinated by the United States on January 3rd, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander suddenly became a household name. But in Iran, he's been a potent symbol for decades, shaping conflicts in the region and with the U.S. In this episode, the origins of the shadow commander and the complicated legacy of what he means to Iran.

Dr. Rhode discusses the aftermath of the liquidation of Qassem Suleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, who was a terrorist and mass murderer. While Iran is issuing vast threats against the US and Israel as a result of Suleimani's demise, Rhode said in reality the Iranian leadership is frightened. And we're back with an episode that tries to pick out some of the events of August that will mean the most for technology law and policy this year. Dave Aitel opens, telling us that Cyber Command gave the world a hint of what “defending forward” looks like with an operation that is claimed to have knocked the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's tanker attacks for a long-lasting loop.  David Kris lifts the curtain on China's approach to information warfare, driven by the Hong Kong protests and its regional hegemonic ambitions.  Speaking of China, it looks as though that government's determination to bring the Uighur population to heel led it to create a website devoted to compromising iPhones, in the process disclosing a few zero-days and compromising anybody who viewed the site. Dave Aitel teases out some of the less obvious lessons. He criticizes Apple for not giving security-minded users the tools they need to protect themselves. But he resists my suggestion that the FBI, which first flagged the site for Google's Project Zero, went to Google because Apple wasn't responsive to the Bureau's concerns. (Alternative explanation: If you embarrass the FBI in court, don't be surprised if they embarrass you a few years later.) The lesson of the fight over Chinese disinformation about Hong Kong on Twitter and Facebook and the awkwardness of Apple's situation when faced with Chinese hacking is that the U.S.-China trade war is a lot more than a trade war. It's a grinding, continental decoupling drift that the trade war is driving but which the Trump Administration probably couldn't stop now if the president wanted to. We puzzle over exactly what the president does want. Then I shift to mocking CNN for Trump derangement and inaccuracy (yes, it's an easy target, but give me a break, I've been away for a month): Claims that the president couldn't “hereby order” U.S. companies to speed their decoupling from China are just wrong as a matter of law. In fact, the relevant law, still in effect with modest changes, used to be called the Trading with the Enemy Act. And it's been used to “hereby order” the decoupling of the U.S. economy from countries like Nazi Germany, among others. Whether such an order in the case of China would be “lawful but stupid” is another question. August saw more flareups over alleged Silicon Valley censorship of conservative speech. Facebook has hired former Sen. Kyl to investigate claims of anti-conservative bias in its content moderation, and the White House is reportedly drafting an executive order to tackle Silicon Valley bias. I ask whether either the FTC or FCC will take up their regulatory cudgels on this issue and suggest that Bill Barr's Justice Department might have enough tools to enforce strictures against political bias in platform censorship.  We close with the most mocked piece of tech-world litigation in recent weeks – Crown Sterling's lawsuit against BlackHat for not enforcing its code of conduct while the company was delivering a widely disparaged sponsored talk about its new crypto system. Dave Aitel, who runs a cybersecurity conference of his own, lays out the difficulties of writing and enforcing a conference code of conduct. In his State of the Union address in February, President Trump sounded like a non-interventionist when he said, “Great nations do not fight endless wars.” Since then, he has begun to draw down America's military presence in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.Due to the growing unpopularity of drawn-out wars in the Middle East, and Trump's focus on reelection in 2020, he probably does not want to start another endless war with Iran. In the second part of Faith in Freedom John meets Dr Sina Hakiman, imprisoned three times by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, accused of heresy. In total he spent more than seven years in jail in the years after the return of Ayatollah Khomeini to Tehran. He now lives in exile in the UK. In the early 1980s, he made contact with the CIA, agreeing to risk his life and his family's wellbeing as a spy within Iran.
