It's Witness Wednesday! Todd Friel is at Georgia Tech where attempts to understand students' level of conviction in their faith or lack thereof. The discussions touch on themes of evangelism, the problem of tolerance in religious discourse, and the Christian gospel. Segment 1: • Todd talks with a Hindu student who admits he's a "5" on belief, describes his god as an amorphous entity, and refuses to convert Todd—even when begged: “You believe what you believe.” • David the Methodist gives himself a 7.5 but says it's not his place to convince others; believes faith is comforting but offers no reason why Todd should believe it too. • Both students echo the cultural mantra: “Just be good”—and miss the gospel entirely. Segment 2: • Todd speaks with Travis who claims to be an atheist, then shifts to agnostic when challenged—saying his beliefs are based more on feelings than facts. • Admits he's lied, stolen, lusted, and deserves hell—yet says it doesn't bother him because he doesn't believe in it. • Todd walks him through the law and the gospel, but Travis feels nothing and admits: “It honestly doesn't concern me.” Segment 3: • Matt tries to share his faith with Todd but struggles to explain sin, the gospel, or assurance of salvation. • Admits he hasn't read his Bible outside church in a long time—yet claims Jesus is precious to him. • Todd lovingly warns: “No Bible, no breakfast,” urging Matt to get grounded before temptation takes root on campus. Segment 4: • Todd talks with a young man who was raised Buddhist but disengaged—says all religions are basically good and teach people to live right. • Agrees he's done wrong but says he's “half and half”—not a bad person, just not perfect. • Hears the gospel clearly and respectfully, but walks away with no urgency to consider his guilt before a holy God. – Order the new book, "Lies My Therapist Told Me", by Fortis Institute Fellow Dr. Greg Gifford now! https://www.harpercollins.com/pages/liesmytherapisttoldme – Thanks for listening! What about those who've never heard the Gospel? What about those who've never even seen a Bible? How can they come to know God?This was Brian's question when he called in to our radio program. In this short video clip, I share a few thoughts on what is often called “general revelation” and “special revelation.”I hope this serves to bolster your confidence in the Gospel message and our Savior's promise that whoever seeks Him will find Him.We hope you enjoyed this episode. However, the MAIN reason is that the LORD wants to give you a message for healing, direction, protection, or enablement. And, sometimes―if not many times―the message will be for someone else. Some people may NOT be able to listen to―or discern―the voice of the Spirit. Or, they may NOT want to listen to the voice of the Spirit due to rebellion or living in sin. Therefore, the LORD may send you a message via His Spirit to relay to the other person. In my experience the message is usually given for specific knowledge in an area where help or advice is needed: in my life or in the lives of others. The principles of God are timeless and transfer … and if we are students of God's Word and have the knowledge of Proverbs we are able to navigate the problems and challenges of life. But when situations arise that are not clearly and specifically defined―as in ministry strategy or spiritual warfare or dream interpretation―then we need a “specific” word from the LORD. Many people read the Holy Bible, but they are NOT listening to the Holy Spirit. God wants us to apply His Word to our lives. This is where listening to the Spirit brings success, victory and accurate direction. ________________________________________   LISTENING TO THE HOLY SPIRITDIRECTION AND HEALING PROPHECY INTRODUCTION “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.” – Jesus: John 16:13 One of the Holy Spirit's assignments is to glorify Christ. When you receive direction, help and enablement, Christ is glorified in your victorious life and testimony thereof: by your word and your lifestyle. The Holy Spirit guides you into ALL truth; spiritual, business, family, prophetic, physical, travel and relational truth. Many people read the Holy Bible, but they are NOT listening to the Holy Spirit. God wants us to apply His Word to our lives. This is where listening to the Spirit brings success, victory and accurate direction. As you become attuned―skilled―in listening to the Spirit, you will begin to notice that sometimes shortly after you receive a message you will experience a confirmation. For example, [I recently had this happen] if you receive a message about advice you would give a person, that person may contact you not long after and ask you for advice concerning the same (not knowing that you have already heard from God concerning them or their situation). EXAMPLES Sometimes listening to the Holy Spirit will be synonymous with the gift of prophecy. For example, one time after a large seminar I was conducting at McCormick Place in Chicago a lady came up to me and said, “I have two wombs …” I had already finished praying with people and I was really wanting to go to the place where I was to stay and go to bed. When the lady said, “I have two wombs …” my first thought was, “I must have preached past the anointing.” (I wanted to be anywhere but there.) What the lady said in full was this, “I have two wombs. If I conceive in the one womb the life will live, but if I conceive in the other (womb) the life will die. Do you have a word for me?” Instantly―without thinking about it―I said to her, “You will have a son. He will live, and his name will be Samuel.” When I was in Chicago about a year later I met little Samuel. In similar manner, listening to the Spirit may sometimes by synonymous with the Word of Knowledge. For sure―if you operate in the gifts of the Spirit like Prophecy and the Word of Knowledge―you definitely need to be listening to the Holy Spirit. Study my book, How to Receive God's Power with Gifts of the Spirit. But there are times that God wants to give you a message for yourself and it may be just for reflection, or to meditate thereon. He may want you to think about what you would do in a certain situation that may be coming up in the future and you do NOT know about it yet―or, the complete details have not dovetailed together yet―and may not for quite some time. PURPOSE OF LISTENING You have to realize that God is for you. As in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the motive for listening to the Spirit should be to edify, improve, deliver, make whole or provide intelligence. Thank God, He did not leave us here without the tools and weapons we need to operate in power and victory … and especially as we progress into the End Times. Realize this: we are at the entrance to the End Times. If the Early Church―or Messianic Synagogue―needed the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the five fold ministries of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher as laid out in Ephesians 4:11, how much more do we need them today? And, how much more will the followers of Messiah Jesus need them as we progress further along into the End Times. PREREQUISITES TO LISTENING We need to start our day with the Word of God. We need to be students of the Word of God. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17) So the Word of God is the channel through which the activities of the Holy Spirit operate. When we have the Word of God in us―and operate based upon the Word of God―we hear (from God … from His Spirit). And when we hear from God, faith rises and MIRACLES happen. But remember also, this is all predicated upon love. “Faith works by love.” (Galatians 5:6) The Word of God is the channel though which faith flows, and love is the activator which triggers faith. HOW WILL YOU KNOW If you are living for God, then give God the benefit of the doubt. I have seen many MIRACLES since I learned to give God the benefit of the doubt. If you're NOT sure the message is from God, then check to make sure it does NOT conflict with Scripture. If it does NOT conflict with Scripture, then ask God for a confirmation that is clear and concise. NOTE: If you are “seasoned” in listening to the Holy Spirit then you probably won't require a confirmation. We should NOT be surprised that the LORD works this way in addition to His many other modes of communication. We read of Him doing this throughout Bible in both the Tanakh (Old Testament) and the Brit Chadashah (New Testament). God has NOT changed. “For I am the LORD; I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6) It's people who have not changed that corrupt His program. People who have never seen healing will tell you that God does not heal. People who have never seen miracles will tell you that MIRACLES do not happen anymore. People who do NOT believe in Apostles or Prophets operating today will tell you that those offices ceased after the Early Messianic Synagogue. However, to say that would be to prove ignorance―or, folly―as that would mean that the Scripture in Ephesian 4:11 has been rescinded: “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.” No more pastors, teachers and evangelists either! GOD WANTS TO COMMUNICATE Also, realize that the LORD wants to communicate with people more than we do. And, He does NOT want his messages of direction and help to be cryptic or hard to understand. It amazes me how many people have never read the Holy Bible completely. Here's the greatest communication to mankind and they treat it like a magazine. My friend, get the Word inside you and YOU will begin to hear God. Start your day with it and end your day with it. I made a rule for my life years ago: “No Bible … no breakfast.” The day is coming when the world government and the world religious system will destroy Bibles … including YOURS if you're still here. Then YOU will need to listen to the Spirit … and it may be too late. The Holy Spirit will guide you into ALL truth as you listen to Him. Hey there! Hello and welcome to this episode of The Burt (Not Ernie) Show…getting the promises of God into the hearts and minds of the people of God, which is right where they belong. So thankful you're listening to this episode of the show, and hey, today we're looking at a promise directly from the New Testament words of Jesus, and it's a good one. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you may want to just save this episode and plan to share it somewhere, or with somebody, because it's gonna get really real really fast and really bring it today. God's promises are true - let's talk about how they're true for you today.   You're listening to The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, part of the Spark Network, which can be found via the Edifi app. Today's episode is sponsored by the Psalm 91 audio Bible study & prayer sessions, created by the show host (that's me), Jan L. Burt. Access the study at JanLBurt.com/psalm91   Psalm 91 is perhaps the most astounding passage of promises with the most astounding miracles linked to it of maybe the entire Old Testament, and for sure it is one of the most amazing and life-changing passages in the Bible. It's something you should know and pray over yourself and your loved ones, because it holds promises that we find only in this passage, and it is something every believer needs to apply to their life - and that's why I created the Psalm 91 audio Bible study. JanLBurt.com/psalm91 and this is episode number 194.   Alrighty, so let's jump right into this. I'll be reading from the Amplified today, looking at a few verses from the book of Matthew, chapter 11.   Matthew 11:28-30 Amplified Bible 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.” That's from Matthew 11, verses 28-30.   We've got a call here, something we need to do, our part is to come to Jesus. Who is it He is calling to come to Him? Those who are weary, those who are heavily burdened, dealing with religious rituals that provide no peace…and hey, there are many things that fall into that category, so don't automatically assume this doesn't apply to you because it really might, and Jesus has freedom for you. Today, He has freedom for you from religious systems and programs and rituals that don't give you the kind of peace that Jesus wants you to have. And when we do as Jesus asks us to, calls us to, and come to Him, He promises (verse 28 says WILL and when He says He will do something, He will!) He will give you rest. The Lord's salvation is restful, is peaceful, for you and for me. We can have been in the Chirstian world for so long that we begin to lose our rest, our peace. That is not what Jesus wants, my friend. From day one of your salvation to day done of your salvation, when He takes you home or when He returns and you are caught up in the air to meet Him, whatever your day done might look like, Jesus wants you to have peace and a refreshed soul, rest like literal rest in every aspect of life, in every sense of the word, on every single day that you walk with Him. This isn't something we share with people when we are talking to them about Jesus, but we no longer have it as part of our daily life. It's meant to be lived, this walk of faith and lived well - lived on Jesus's terms and this verse tells us that His terms are trading our weariness and heavy burdened way of life for rest, peace, and refreshed souls. And while it might sound too good to be true, it's actually 100 percent true. God's promises are what, now? True. Always and in all ways.  He calls us to take His yoke upon ourselves and learn from Him - that literally means to just follow Him as His disciple. I say JUST, but I don't say there's never any struggle to do this. The world, our flesh, social media, old and new friends, our workplaces, even our families and sad to say often our church culture is too worldly, too focused on programs or not being a Christian weirdo, or seeker friendly or all that stuff (a subject for another day, but not biblical, not sustainable, and not discipleship…just sayin'!) All these things and more can make it tricky to keep following Jesus as His disciple. But when we stay yoked to Him and don't pull and tug and fight that yoke, just walk with Him at His pace and His leading doing life His way, well then, that's discipleship and we have His promised peace and rest, and it is just so good. Now if you've been walking with the Lord for a while, can I ask you to pause for a moment (maybe pause this podcast for a second and think on this) and just remember what it was like for you before you responded to Jesus' call when He rescued you and saved you and forgave and turned your life around in a good way. Can you remember what it was like? The stress, the fear, the anger or other emotions, the control you maybe tried to exert on situations and people, the overwhelm, the way your did all those things you didn't want to do, your hard heart, the lack of hope, the lack of joy, the lack of peace, afraid of all the things, uneasy, tossed around by life - do you remember? And if you have not yet made the decision to follow Jesus as His disciple, can I just tell you that right now is a great time to make that decision? It's super simple, there is no required prayer to pray, you can just talk to God and tell Him you're sick of your sin, sick of life like this, and you want what Jesus offers, peace and eternal life and total forgiveness for every single sin, past, present and future, and just ask Him to be Lord of your life, to forgive you of all your sins, and to take up reign on the throne of your heart. Thank Him, and believe it is done, and it is so long as you mean it. It really is that simple. Just talk to the Lord, invite Him into your life, your heart, and thank Him and say Amen, so be it, yes Lord. He doesn't make it hard, because He is a good God and He loves you too much to make it too hard to make Jesus Lord of your life.    So, remembering what it was like before you made Him Lord, your hard knock life, and that's the true reality for everyone who doesn't walk with Jesus as His disciple (not about a program for six weeks at church, about discipleship for all the rest of your days!). And now think about what it's like to have that peace, to take His yoke upon you and learn from Him, knowing He is gentle and humble in heart and that He brings you rest for your soul. Rest for your soul. This isn't just a nap. It's REST for your inner being, for your soul. Soul rests is next level. It's truly supernatural, it is not of this world. It's from the Lord. And it's life changing. You need it. Jesus has it for you. And that's just one smidgen of the promises from this passage alone! Soul rest. His yoke is easy to bear and His burden is light. You are not going to be weighed down and having a come apart when you are His disciple. That's not your life, because it's not His will based on Matthew 11, verse 28 through 30. You do need to believe that this is all true for you, because when we believe, our faith is accredited to us as righteousness, and Jesus often said that it would be done to those who asked something of Him, it would be done to them according to their faith, to their belief. So, believe the very words Jesus spoke, don't do an eye roll and refuse to believe it. Just choose to believe. And it really is a choice. Don't mind your feelings, but make your feelings mind the Word of God.   Now I'm going to sort of add some zest to this episode. It's a unique episode of the podcast, because I'm going to share some things I have never spoken about on this platform. Everything I'm sharing today is true, it actually happened, just as I'm telling it. And I know it's all true because it happened to me. I'm gonna tell ya some things, real life, nitty gritty, stuff. Here goes!   Bizarre and weirded me out experience #1: Now, first off, let me preface these next couple of snippets I'm sharing from my own life by clearly stating that I was not a follower of Jesus at all at this point in time. Not at all. Not one bit. Zero percent interested in God. I was a train wreck. No Bible in our home, didn't go to church on Easter or Christmas, just zero of that in my growing up home or in my life. This event happened when I was a teenager, and I worked as a teen, like many of us, and at this point I was around 18, working for a telemarketing company, more like a call center for customer service stuff than outbound sales calls, but basically telemarketing. I worked second shift, we called it the night shift (only two shifts there, days or nights and I was on nights). I worked in Omaha, Nebraska but lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, right across the river, actually very normal for the Omaha area, gotta add that piece of info to this true story.  So one afternoon, I went to work as usual, and there was a man at work that I didn't recognize, not that big of a deal, lots of turnover in a place like that, ya know? He sat in front of my and to my left at his cubicle desk area, and on our lunch break he came and sat at the table I sat at with my normal group of work friends, and back then, I was a smoker…actually started smoking probably around age 13, maybe even sneakily smoking at 12, but smoking with my mom's permission at 13 (meaning that at that point, when I was 13, we lived in a small town in Nebraska and she gave her permission to all the local stores that I could buy cigarettes there because she'd given me permission to smoke, and am I Gen X, the child of a Boomer? Uh, yes…) So, I sat at the outside table with the other smokers for my lunch break, and this man sat with us, but he didn't smoke. He was chatty and said something about working a different shift for this one day and wondered if anybody lived across the river in Iowa and might be able to give him a ride back to the Iowa side after work. I wasn't naive, I didn't give rides to men I did not know as an 18-year-old, and you can discern from my being a smoker at age 13 that maybe I was a bit street savvy. So, it was out of the norm for me to say yes to something like this, in fact I cannot think of another time in my life when I gave a ride to a stranger, but everybody seemed like it was okay and of course they knew I lived in Iowa, and they all seemed comfortable with him and I gave him a ride after work. Now for some reason, the whole drive to the place in Iowa where I dropped him off, I was not comfortable smoking. So, after work, a smoker lights up, that's just how it is, one of the key smokes of the entire day, honestly, is the after-work smoke. But I didn't grab my cigarettes. I left them in the side pocket storage area of my baby blue 1988 Chevy Beretta.  On the drive, he was very kind in a way that was super genuine, and he asked questions about my life, started as normal chit chat, but I answered each question and then he'd another one, and some of the questions were really interesting…like he asked about the small town I'd used to live in and what life was like there for me, and I shared things about being a heavy drinker and being in several car accidents where the car was totaled (like, the number of totaled cars I was in over the course of say four years was five, two cars that rolled, one that had a telephone pole fall onto it right where I was sitting, one launched off a dead end at nearly 100 mph, and another accident at around 130 mph that barely stopped before the car hit a large cement culvert). And I kind of chuckled / joked that maybe God was punishing me or maybe even trying to end my life because I was such a terrible person. (Now at this point I had not had a drop of alcohol in around a year and hadn't really been heavily drinking in 15-18 months, so I was not a raging drunk when I gave this man a ride home after work, but I was weirdly comfortable sharing about the mess that my life was in so many ways, including my heavy drinking and horrible car accidents, four of those totaled being my own cars). So, I made a comment to try and lighten the mood but also to acknowledge that I was a really terrible teenager, and said maybe God was punishing me or trying to even end my life due to my awfulness.  This man looked at me, like really looked at me, and told me that God was not trying to kill me, but that the devil, Satan, was, because if Satan could kill me without me knowing Jesus as Lord and Savior, I'd go to hell. Now I knew I deserved hell, and I knew that was where I was headed…I think it was common knowledge to GenX teens to know that, to understand that. So, the mention of hell didn't shock me, but the idea that Satan was trying to kill me was a totally new concept to me.  He went on to say that God had actually protected me from what Satan wanted to do, and that He was not angry at me, punishing me, but that He loved me and was watching out for me, keeping me from death when I should have been dead many times over.  He just told me that God loved me. And then, we arrived at the place he'd told me to drop him off. Of course it was dark, probably at least 11pm or so, and I parked near a long sidewalk that led to the doorway of this building, I still don't know what the place was, it kind looked like maybe an apartment building but not a layout I'd seen before, it had kind of a small town hospital feel to it more than apartments, and it looked like not a place someone would live, and the sidewalk leading to the door was pretty well lit, the doors were glass and the hall inside was super well lit, bright white lighting, think hospital lighting, white walls, white ceiling, white tile floor…and I could see all the way down that hallway. He thanked me for the ride, got out of the car, and shut the car door. I reached for my cigarettes, which were in the door panel pocket to my left, and then glanced back to the right, out the passenger side window, and the dude was gone. I mean gone gone.  This sidewalk was long, and lights were shining on it. There was a barren yard on both side, no trees, no shrubs, just super short grass, and nowhere for him to hide. There was nobody in the hallway inside the building. It startled me. I literally jumped, and looked behind my car, out the driver's side window, the guy was just gone. Once I knew he was not anywhere around, I just drove home.  Went to work the next day and had some questions about what he had said and wanted to make sure he got into his building okay, so I asked my supervisor if he could get a message to that man. My super looked at me like I was nuts. He said no day shift worker had worked the night shift, and when I said, “He worked the whole shift in that cubicle right there, ya know, dark hair, skinny dude, wore faded jeans, brown shoes…that guy, he was right there.” He said nobody had been in that seat the day before, and he had no idea who I was talking about because that didn't describe any of the day workers.  Now I was feeling really weird. So, on the lunch break, I asked my friends. “Remember that guy who sat with us yesterday, he didn't smoke, but he lives in Iowa and needed a ride home, so I gave him a ride? Remember him?” Every single person at the table looked at me like, “Huh?” Nobody remembered this guy. They all said, nobody sat with us yesterday, just us. And a couple of them said they told me bye the night before as I got into my car…they were emphatic that I got into my car alone. Nobody was with me. Okay, I was in weird town, and they were wondering if I was okay, like what was I talking about? So, I just said something like, Oh, well this is weird… and tried to change the subject. Didn't work too well, because they really were curious what was going on and I just never mentioned it again.  But I sure did think about it.  A lot. Not really just because of what he'd said to me about God, but because it was such a weird experience, and nobody remembered him but me and I'm telling you, he was a real guy at my real workplace who rode to Iowa in my real car, and we had a real conversation and then he was just gone.  This really happened to me. And it really happened just as I've told it. And it really stuck, because of the way it happened. This event in my life paved the way for me for what God was going to do in the future, which was to reveal Himself to me (Christ revealed to us, as Paul wrote in the New Testament). It was part of the rock-solid foundation the Lord was building in my life. The verses I read today from Matthew got me thinking about this and got me thinking about all the ways God is working in the lives of people all the time. Remarkable things like this happened often. Have they happened to you? Maybe they're happening to people you're praying for. Don't stop praying! Please! And maybe you can share something God did to get ahold of you, to get your attention, to make a mark on your life, that was how He was drawing you to Himself, so He could save you for time and all eternity, give you new life, freedom, hope, joy, peace, and forgiveness. I personally believe that I had an encounter with some kind of angel in disguise. He told me the truth, and it stuck. And he disappeared from sight in an instant, and that stuck. I don't know that I was entertaining an angel unawares, but I do believe it was an angel, nonetheless. God sent him to my workplace, God made me comfortable enough with him to give him a ride from Nebraska to Iowa, and God set up those circumstances with nobody else remembering this man and him poof vanishing right out of thin air so that I would not forget that moment in my life.  And when the next moment came along for me, when God was doing the miraculous to get hold of me, you'd better believe that this moment was still fresh on my mind.   I'll share Part Two of my salvation story in the next episode, and I hope you'll tune in because it's really a precious part of my life, and I'm honored to be alive to share it with you. And I mean that. Share your story with somebody as the Lord leads, and of course feel free to share this episode if it might encourage others that are in your say social media circle.  Thanks for listening, and I'll see ya back here next time. Bye bye.

In studying the words of the Bible, the preacher must be aware of how those words are being used. Sometimes, the Bible uses  “figures of speech”. These are different expressions that bring life and vitality to language. However, the Bible should always be taken literally unless the Bible itself makes it clear the passage in question is to be taken figuratively.Among the figures of speech used in the Bible are the following.Simile - A simile is an imaginative comparison. It is usually signaled using words such as like, as or so.  “Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:”, Matt. 13:24.Metaphor - A metaphor is like a simile, but it is an implied likeness. In other words, the comparison is made, but words such as like, as and so are not used. “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”, Matt. 5:13-14.Paradox - A paradox is defined as a “statement which appears contradictory, or is opposed to common sense, and yet, it is still true.” Jesus used many paradoxical statements in His teachings. He made statements so shocking to His hearers the truth was driven home in a unique way.  “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”, Matt. 16:25.Hyperbole - This is the use of an exaggeration to emphasize a truth. This is seen in the words of Jesus also, when He said, “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”, Matt. 19:24.We must also be aware of grammar. How do the words of any given passage relate one to another? Learn how to study verb tenses and know the difference between a conjunction and a pronoun. The preacher must also study the context of the passage. No Bible passage is isolated from any other. When studying any passage of Scripture, the preacher must see how it fits into its immediate context as well as how it fits into the whole of the biblical revelation. When the context is ignored, false doctrine is always the result. We must never be guilty of lifting a paragraph, a verse, or even a single word out of its natural context.Every verse in the Bible must be seen in its relationship to the whole Bible. One way to learn to study the Bible in its context is by becoming very familiar with the whole Bible. To help in this endeavor, a good Bible handbook, or survey, that explains the contents of the book and its place in the Bible is indispensable. Along those same lines, the interpreter must know what kind of literature he is dealing with as well. There are five basic kinds of literature found in the Bible. They are:Prose - This is the kind of language used in everyday speech. It is the kind of language that is used to describe events and in general conversation.Poetry - One-third of the Old Testament is poetry! While Hebrew poetry does not rhyme, there is a parallelism of thought that will aid the preacher in interpreting the text.Historical Narrative - The Gospels and Acts fall into this category.Wisdom Literature - This kind of writing is reflective and philosophical in nature. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes fall into this category.Apocalyptic Literature - This kind of writing is filled with symbolic language and deals with prophetic events. The book of Revelation is apocalyptic literature.

How God speaks to us Introduction As I look back over 70 years of Christian experience, the most exciting thing I have discovered is that God has a plan for my life. Notice, I did not say God had a plan but that God has a plan, because although I am now 83 years old, God still has a plan.   And he has a plan for you too, and the most important thing you can possibly do is to find out what it is. God loves you. He wants what's best for you. He knows you better than you know yourself. So it only makes sense to ask him for guidance. Besides, if you're already a Christian and love Jesus, you'll surely want to do what God wants you to.   This series is about how God speaks and how he guides us. It will help you to recognize his voice, to know when he is speaking to you and when he is not. I'll be telling you what I have learnt from personal experience. I'll be telling you how he spoke to me through a book that I found on top of my parents' piano on the very day that I been told it was out of print. I'll be telling you how God spoke to me in the middle of the night in January 1972 and radically changed the direction of my life. And much much more.   But more importantly I'll be sharing with you from what the Bible teaches.  The Bible is God's inspired word and it's the Bible itself that is the main way God speaks to Christians today. Everything we experience must be judged by what the Bible has to say on the matter. God won't contradict himself by saying something through our experience that is not in line with what he's already said in the Bible. So when I share my experience of how God has guided and spoken to me, I'm just using it as an illustration of what the Bible teaches.   Today we'll begin with a summary of what the Bible teaches about the many different ways God speaks to us. Then in the talks that follow we'll expand on the things we've outlined today.       Talk 1   God speaks in so many different ways There are so many different ways God speaks to us. In this talk we'll give a brief outline of what the Bible has to say on this important subject. We will see that:   God speaks to all humanity through his creation He spoke to Israel by the prophets He has finally spoken through his Son, Jesus He speaks through the Bible He speaks by his Spirit He speaks through other people.   God speaks to all humanity through his creation The Bible is very clear that God speaks to all of us through his wonderful creation. Nowhere in the Bible do we find an argument for the existence of God. Bible writers simply assumed it. The world we live in and the heavens above are clear evidence that a wonderful designer has been at work.   Psalm 19:1-4 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.   Notice the words declare, proclaim, speech, voice, words. As he looks into the night sky the psalmist sees the stars and planets as speaking to all humanity, to people of every language. They declare the glory of God. They pour forth speech. They are shouting at us that they are the work of his hands. No doubt the apostle Paul had this passage in mind when he wrote in Romans 1:20   …since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.   There is no excuse for not believing in God. The creation itself provides abundant evidence that there must be a creator. And today we see more and more television programmes showing how wonderfully designed the creation is. As a Christian I find myself praising God for his skill, his genius, his creativity. I hear phrases like ‘this is designed to…', and I rejoice because I know the Designer.   But I groan inwardly when and the credit is given to ‘Mother Nature' or ‘evolution' or even the animal or plant itself rather than to God. In today's society the creation is being applauded rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25). ‘Mother Nature' has become a substitute for Father God! Evolution, a blind force, is said to have a purpose! And a plant is described as having a strategy[1], implying that it has made a conscious decision to equip itself with an ability to grow in a certain way! No wonder the Psalmist said, The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God' (Psalm 14:1).   For us who believe, on the other hand, the creation speaks eloquently not only of God's existence but of his great and glorious power, his wisdom, his faithfulness, his beauty and his love. God not only speaks to us through creation, he shouts at us!   God spoke to Israel by the prophets The Bible is very clear, then, that God continually speaks to all people, everywhere, by his wonderful creation. But that is not all. The Bible also reveals that God spoke in Old Testament times to his chosen people, Israel, by the prophets he sent to them. We often think of prophets as people who foretell the future, and it's true that the Old Testament prophets did foretell in great detail the coming of Christ. But that wasn't their primary role. Their main purpose was to tell the people of Israel how they should live and to give them direction as to what they should do[2]. They did this as they were led and guided by the Holy Spirit. The people needed the guidance of prophets because in Old Testament times (and in the New Testament before Pentecost) very few of them had a personal experience of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit was given only to specific people for specific purposes[3], but the day was coming when the gift of the Spirit would be made available to all. Through the prophet Joel God declared:   And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days (Joel 2:28-29).   This prophecy was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost when Jesus' disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). The disciples spoke languages they had never learned and, when the crowd asked, What does this mean? Peter replied:   …this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel, "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy (Acts 2:16-18).   The ability to receive God's Spirit, to hear what God is saying and to speak to others on his behalf was to be no longer restricted to a few. As from Pentecost all God's people have the Spirit. We're all called to speak for God. We have no need of prophets to tell us what to do! But does this mean that there are no prophets in the New Testament church? Are there no prophets today? There most certainly are. As we'll see in a later talk, prophets are one of the ways God speaks to us today. It's just that their role is not exactly the same as that of the Old Testament prophets. The need for that kind of prophet ceased with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. In fact the New Testament is clear that the role of the Old Testament prophets was over[4]. Once Jesus had come, God has finally spoken to us by his Son.   God has finally spoken by his Son, Jesus The letter to the Hebrews begins with this statement:   In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son (Hebrews 1:1-2).   What does this mean? As we've just seen, one way God speaks to us is through the Holy Spirit. But this verse says that God has spoken by his Son. At first sight this might look like a contradiction but in fact it is not. Firstly, it's because Jesus came and died for us that we have the Holy Spirit. He died for us, rose again, and 40 days later ascended into heaven. Notice what Peter says when preaching to the crowd on the day of Pentecost:   God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear (Acts 2:32-33).   It was Jesus who poured out the Spirit and it is through his Spirit that he speaks to us today.   Secondly, Hebrews 1:2 says that God has spoken by his Son. The Aorist tense the writer uses here indicates that he is referring to a specific period in history – the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. The writer is saying that God's final word to the human race has been spoken in Jesus. There's a sense in which God has nothing more to say! There's nothing more to add. The message of Jesus is enough! And God is still speaking to us by it. He speaks through Jesus' teaching, his example, his character, his death and resurrection. Perhaps that's why John's Gospel describes Jesus as the Word:   John 1:1- 2,14: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.   We use words when we speak. They're our primary means of communication. And God speaks through his Word, Jesus who became flesh and lived among us. But he also speaks through his written word, the Bible.   God speaks through the Bible If God speaks to us through Jesus, it's obvious that he will speak to us through the Bible which tells us about him. The Old Testament law and prophets pointed forward to him (Luke 24:27). The New Testament Gospels record what he said and did while he was here on earth. The book of Acts records how he continued to work through his disciples by the power of his Spirit. And the letters written to the churches that were formed through the preaching of his disciples give us wonderful teaching about Jesus himself and the kind of lives we should live as his followers. The Bible is God's word first and foremost because it tells us about Jesus.   Later on in the series we'll talk in more detail about how God speaks to us through the Bible. We'll see how the word of God reveals to us the way of salvation. It's evangelistic. It also teaches us what we should believe and how we should behave. It's didactic. What's more, it reveals amazing things about the future and the second coming of Christ. It's prophetic.   But the Bible can be prophetic in another way too. There are times when a verse of scripture seems to leap out of the page. The Holy Spirit is drawing our attention to it, and through it God speaks very directly and specifically into our immediate situation. There have been several occasions when God has spoken to me in this way, and I'll be sharing some of them with you later.   God speaks by his Spirit There are several verses in the New Testament that tell us that the Holy Spirit speaks[5]. As we've just seen, one way he speaks is through the Bible. But at times he speaks independently of scripture. A good example is found in Acts 13:1-3:   In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers… While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.   You'll notice that what the Holy Spirit said was giving a specific instruction. He wasn't on this occasion speaking through a verse of scripture. No Bible verse would be that specific. He was telling the church leaders at Antioch to set apart Barnabas and Saul (or Paul) for a particular ministry they already knew he had called them to. After more fasting and praying, they did this by laying hands on them and sending them off on what was to be Paul's first missionary journey. But how exactly did the Holy Spirit speak to them? The answer is, we don't know. Did he speak with an audible voice? That's certainly a possibility. It seems to have happened that way in Acts 10 when Peter was on the roof top in Joppa. Peter falls into a trance and sees a vision of something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners with all kinds of animals in it. (This included ‘unclean' creatures that Peter as a Jew was forbidden to eat under Old Testament law). Then in verses 13-16 we're told that Peter hears a voice:   Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."  "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."  This happened three times…   Peter immediately identifies it as the voice of the Lord (v.14) and verse 19 tells us that while Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you…   So the Holy Spirit does speak sometimes with an audible voice and it's possible that that is how he spoke to the church leaders in Acts 13:1-3. However, it's worth bearing in mind that in Acts 10 Peter heard the voice while he was having a vision and we know that dreams and visions are one of the ways the Spirit may speak to us. It was through a vision God gave to Paul that the gospel first came to Europe (Acts 16:6-10) and Acts 2:16-17 makes it clear that dreams and visions are to be expected as a result of the coming of the Holy Spirit:   In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.   But this passage, as well as mentioning dreams and visions, also mentions prophecy. So in Acts 13 the Spirit could have spoken through a spiritual gift like prophecy. The passage mentions that there were prophets in the church at Antioch and perhaps that is the most obvious way to understand it.   So the Spirit may speak with an audible voice, through a dream or vision, or through a spiritual gift like prophecy. But these are not the only ways that God may speak to us. For example, he may speak through what is sometimes called an inner witness or prompting and we'll be saying more about this in a later talk. And finally, we need to remember that very often God speaks to us through other people.   God speaks through other people From what we have seen so far it's clear that sometimes God speaks to us directly, without anyone else being involved. This is the case when he speaks to us through creation or when he speaks as we read the Bible. The same is true when he speaks through an inner prompting or through a dream or vision. However, very often he uses other people to speak to us. When we first believed the gospel it was because someone else told us about it. This could have happened by a variety of ways – by witnessing or preaching or writing or singing for example. In fact, this is the main way that God intends the gospel to be spread[6].   And the same is true throughout our Christian lives. He often speaks through other people. If we had Christian parents, God probably first spoke to us through them, although we may well have not realised it at the time! In church we should certainly expect God to speak to us through preaching or teaching or through someone exercising a spiritual gift like prophecy. And it's not just in church! A casual conversation while travelling in a car or on a country walk can turn out to contain a very real word from the Lord.   In all these examples God is using someone else to speak to us. He speaks through them to us, and they may not even realise that he's using them that way! And, of course, he can use us to speak to them. But that's something we'll talk about in another time. In fact, throughout the series we'll be developing in greater detail many of things we've said in this talk. And there will be some new areas too. Today I have concentrated mainly on how God speaks to us. But God also guides us sometimes without speaking. As the children of God is our privilege to be led by the Spirit[7]. But that too is a subject for another day. [1] Sir David Attenborough, The Green Planet, BBC Television, Sunday 30th January 2022. No Bible translation is perfect, and languages undergo significant changes over the course of a hundred years, leading to a need for updated translations that contemporary readers can understand. Cultures and religions have also shifted in the Arab world, which raises new challenges for Bible translation. Today, Tuesday November 23 The Word That Builds and Works Jude 1:20-21 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” Over my almost fifty years as a pastor I did everything I could to encourage believers to take time each day to systematically read and study the Word of God! The only way to stay connected to the Foundation of Jesus Christ and to build on it, is to practice this daily discipline! When the Apostle Paul was meeting with the Ephesian Elders for the last time in Acts 20, he gave them this final word: “And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified” (Acts 20:32). Paul told the church at Thessalonica, “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Did you notice what Paul said about the “word of his grace, which is able to build you up….”. And that it is the “word of God, which also effectively works in you…” The Word of God is certainly central in spiritual growth. I have yet to meet a strong, fruitful Christian who ignores his Bible. We must daily spend devotional time in the Word, seeking the mind of God. We must also study the Word regularly, in a disciplined way, so that we better understand what it teaches. The gifted Chinese preacher, Watchman Nee, used to read through the New Testament once a month. This becomes apparent when you read his books, for you are struck with his wonderful insights into God's Word. The members of the Chinese church used to have a saying, "No Bible—no breakfast!" If we followed that motto in America, I wonder how many Christians would go hungry. Jude said, “Build yourselves up on your most holy faith….”. Your “most holy faith” is the Word of God! It is the Word of God that “builds you up” and at the same time “works effectively in you”. Please don't neglect the Word today so that when the trials and temptations come you will stand and not stumble! God Bless!

11: Unwritten Law

Trinity Evangel Church

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2021 66:40

# Introduction C. S. Lewis referred to it as the *Tao* in _The Abolition of Man_. Augustine and Aquinas called it “natural law,” and it ought to be seen as a complement to the presuppositional apologetic as taught by men such as Cornelius Van Til and Greg Bahnsen. You don't need to read any of those men, you can read these five verses to the Romans. Whatever label we give it, or how many more pages can be written about it, the point is this: *God's moral law for all men is inside every man.* No Bible is required to know what's right or to judge men for not doing what's right. Paul has really been sticking his authorial finger into the sores of unrighteousness for a while. The opening of Romans started on such a positive, even buoyant, tone exalting the power of God to salvation for Jews first and also Gentiles who believe the gospel. In the gospel God's righteousness is revealed from faith to faith (Romans 1:16-17). Then Paul turned onto Judgment Juncture, Condemnation Corner, Wrath Road. It's more of a superhighway of sin, lots of lanes and packed with traffic. The apostle starts putting up huge billboards by the side of the road pointing out where men are and where they're headed. Blinking lights: “Bridge Out Ahead” Men know that God *is* and that God doesn't approve of their lusts. In what can only be appreciated as ironic, God lets them have so much of their “freedom” from Him that they're enslaved by it. Yet even then there is some individual and cultural sense of right and wrong, and this continues to reinforce that men will have to give an answer for that. In the previous paragraph (2:5-11) Paul showed that everyone will be judged by his works, endurance of work of good as well as obedience to unrighteousness, no matter one's religious background, Jew or Greek, for God shows no partiality. This paragraph (Romans 2:12-16) drills down further and reveals that every man has a built-in, factory model moral GPS system that keeps repeating to him every time he misses a turn, which is a lot of the time. How often do we hear a man try to excuse himself by saying he had “no idea,” so he shouldn't be held accountable? But everyone has listened to the little voice coming from his internal dashboard, at least enough to prove his final culpability. # God Is Impartial (verses 12-14) Verses 12-14 extend the explanation for why God's judgment is just, in three steps. Why can we trust that God is impartial? How do we know that His judgment is giving every man a fair shake? ## 1. Because everyone is judged according to what they know is right, not according to what they don't know. In particular, all men are *judged* accurately and fairly regardless of their access to God's Word. No one in Paul's audience had a New Testament. It is very unlikely that anyone in Rome had his own copy of part of the Old Testament, let alone a complete copy. Most of the Roman population wouldn't have been curious about Moses, even if they had wanted to download the Torah app onto their tablet just to check it out. The Jews—and there were some in Rome—were a people specially gifted with what we call *special* revelation. All had general, creational revelation (as described in Romans 1:19-20, similarly in Psalm 19:1-6), but to Israel God gave prophets and parchments, and two stone tablets (Psalm 19:7-9). > He declares his word to Jacob, > his statutes and rules to Israel. > He has not dealt thus with any other nation; > they do not know his rules. > Praise the LORD! > (Psalm 147:19–20) Israel had a covenant with the LORD, Yahweh, and His law provided the instructions for the covenant. Paul doesn't refer to the Mosaic Law by name, or even to its summary in the Ten Commandments. “Law” can refer to a number of things, but in verse 12 it distinguishes between the Haves and the HaveNots. > For those sinning without law will perish also without law, and those sinning in law will be judged by law. **Law** is found nine times in these verses, with no definite article modifying **law** in verses 12-13. The end of the matter is death for evil-doers (Romans 1:32); that's the law. To **perish** is eternal destruction, to receive God's wrath and fury (2:8). It is the end for those who sin regardless of having their own copy of the code. ## 2. Besides, everyone is judged by what they **do**, right or not, not by identification with a law (system). Having, hearing (or reading), even *teaching*, God's Word has never made a man in good standing with God. It is always OBEDIENCE. It's an important point for *us* as well. The Lord told Joshua to meditate on the law of the Lord *so that* he might “be *careful to do* according to all that is written in it” (Joshua 1:8). This is the point James makes (James 1:22-25). Hearing and having are not enough. > For the hearers of law are not righteous before God but the doers of law will be justified. **Hearers** and **doers** are rare Greek nouns, and **righteous** and **justified** (or “declared to be righteous”) are regular cognates, especially in this letter to the Romans. A righteous standing before God is *key*, and it must be *given*, and it's not given to possessors but rather to practicers of law. Jews weren't right by virtue of having God's Book, neither, for that matter, are we who have good quiet times and yearly reading checkboxes but are full of the works of the flesh. Disciples of Christ are taught to *obey* all that He's commanded (Matthew 28:20), because judgment has always been about what we do. ## 3. And, even the nations do (some) right, the kind of right found in the law, by nature. This is a critically important perspective that the pagans themselves won't own up to. > For the nations, the ones not having law, are a law to themselves, when they are doing—by nature—the (requirements) of the law, (even though they are) ones not having law. Let's start with the repeated part. The group we're focused on are “the ones not having law.” They are the without-law-ones in verse 12; the ἔθνη, the **Gentiles** (ESV), the “nations” (YLT), the *non*-Jews (compare to verse 17). The phrases are separated in verse 14, but the exact words are there twice: “the not having the law ones.” These men didn't get any of their ideas from a copy of God's written law. Yet sometimes, and we don't know how often or consistently let alone completely, they **do** (things) of the law. It could happen whenever. Again, they aren't doing “the law”; they don't have it. But those who do have it can see this other group and say, “Hey, that looks like this.” How is this possible? There's a one word answer in verse 14, then a two word answer we can add on. The word that's in verse 14 is **nature** (φύσει), or by birth, by natural endowment (BAGD). It is stock equipment, like grain in wood. It's *not* an acquired habit or a social construct, it is the way God made it to be. “Nature” was assumed in Romans 1:26-27 regarding male and female, the *given* order. We live in a moral cosmos, an ordered universe. The “deep magic,” so to speak, is *moral*. Believers know this is possible only by God's *common grace*. Any good they do (and evil they are restrained from doing), and any good that comes from doing good, is not deserved. It is God's gift for their blessing, at least on the temporal level. *Of course* men don't do the requirements perfectly because their nature is fallen. Of course men don't do it perfectly because their flesh lusts for self-defined pleasures, including the pleasure of self-definition. Plus, sin *lies*. So men lie about what they know and where they got their ideas about what is right. But, still, they almost can't help themselves sometimes honoring their mother and father and not murdering every neighbor. That shows (see verse 15) some God-given moral nature. Ever not stealing some smaller kids' stuff is inconsistent with evolution; secular humanism is *not* a riches of kindness. Whenever they do something right, even just one out of a thousand times, **they are a law to themselves**. Maybe we could say practice is nine-tenths of the law. This doesn't mean that everyone has his own standard; it's not the law of subjectivism and/or relativism. This means that an objective standard has been acknowledged by them, without Scripture, even if they hate it. # Case in Point (verses 15-16) Paul explains more about the without law ones. > Those show the work of the law to be written on their hearts, their consciences bearing witness, and thoughts—conflicting with one another—accusing or excusing on the day when God will judge the secrets of men according to my gospel through Jesus Christ. There are at least four things we see in this case. ## First, moral law is in effect today and will be on that day. They are currently **showing the work of the law**, that was the point in verse 14. Sometimes they do what the law requires, they put it together without reading the instruction manual. It's also not going to be a different standard later, as if from a second set of books. ## Second, moral law is internal and external. Again, they **show the work**, but it comes because it is **written on their hearts**. Specifically it is not the law that is written on their hearts, but **the work** of the law, meaning the expectation even without the explicit words. There is *not* usually a consistency between the heart and the hands, but there is *enough* to corroborate the judgment. ## Third, Moral law is shared with humans from God. They have **thoughts** that **accuse or excuse**, that increase their guilty feelings or their confidence, and all of this is happening on board, so to speak. Their recognition software isn't dependent on a data processing center in the cloud. The work of the law is written...by whom? Their consciences (which are given by whom) are witnesses...for whom? Obviously, it's the Creator. So God writes, the conscience is God's own witness in every soul, and He Himself will be the judge on the final day. ## Fourth, Moral law is imperfect among men but omnisciently applied by God. Their thoughts conflict with one another. This is part of the cognitive dissonance. They know, they can't help but know, sometimes they do things that are consistent with what they know, sometimes it's just a twisted echo of what they know. But whatever they know, they are also committed to ignoring God, and may even be at some stage given over by God to irrational thinking (Romans 1:28). A “debased mind” is a debating mind. The conflicting, imperfect application is the part that proves their guilt. God not only assumes that unbelieving men can do some *good*, the sort we see in His law, it is the presence of any good that proves the bad. God's application of the standard is omniscient, even judging the **secrets of men**. God sees past the internal conflicts and external cover-ups. Man proclaims that he is on the right side of history when he knows in his heart he's not. Judgment is **according to gospel**, as in, the gospel is good news of substitutionary judgment on Jesus, but there *must be judgment* (Romans 3:25-26). Also, Paul calls it **my** gospel; don't be too over-spiritual about first-person pronouns. Judgment is **through Jesus Christ**. > [God] has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31) # Conclusion Can the conscience steer a man wrong? Of course (Acts 24:16; Titus 1:15). Can the conscience be oversensitive? Yes (1 Corinthians 8:7). Can the conscience be too insensitive? Definitely (1 Timothy 4:2). *But* the fact that every man does not drive the car of his life off the moral cliff every time he makes a turn is God's evidence of moral law. God gets the credit for that, not man. Any good a man does, and any good a man gets from doing that good, is further evidence against that man for not honoring God and giving Him thanks. We are at the head of a week of cultural inconsistency. We can even be thankful for the inconsistency of unbelievers talking about thanksgiving, because we know that God's riches of kindness are meant to lead them to repentance. ---------- ## Charge There is no law telling you how to do Thanksgiving. There is a law, written in the Word and written on your heart, that you must be thankful. This means that there is great flexibility in the menu, the decorations, the seating arrangements, and so forth, but there is absolute necessity that in *all* those things you are filled with the Spirit. ## Benediction: > And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. (Ephesians 5:18–21, ESV)

No Bible story has changed over the centuries more than the story of Mary and Jesus' birth. It serves as a reminder that we often focus on the wrong things when God delivers His plan to us - and in this case, we see an example of a relatively simple, straight-forward account changing dramatically due to layers and layers of theological developments that have resulted in the concept of "Mary, Mother of God," who was conceived herself without sin, taken directly to heaven without having seen death, and now living as a mediator along with Jesus as something of a "queen mother."The Biblical account itself is fairly straightforward, as Pope John Paul II acknowledged in 1995 when he wrote extensively about the theology behind Mary's story, stating that the scriptures themselves say nothing about Mary having a role in mankind's redemption, living a sinless life, or ascending directly to heaven, but that those ideas evolved over centuries of theological study. It's a reminder for us that the emphasis from the apostles in the first century was not on the idea of elaborating on revealed truth, but instead on remaining faithful to the teaching as it was originally delivered. We see repeated emphasis on trusting the revealed word, which itself explains fully the "mystery of the gospel."

No new shingles after 70 years? Leaks. No Bible, little church, very little prayer? Your life will fall into terrible disrepair. It is far better to stay on the right track with constant maintenance, than fall off and have to do a bunch of rebuilding. Nehemiah fixed the problems. He cleaned out the temple storeroom. He appointed faithful treasurers over the storehouse, stopped the buying and selling on the Sabbath, and cleansed the nation and priesthood of its compromisers. Let's make sure we are like Nehemiah. Our Scripture reading was found in 1 Kings 4:1-34.

Hey hey, sweet friends! Welcome to another week of TELL ME BOUT IT! If you're new to Chosen Girl, "tell me bout it" is where we dive into God's word and wisdom for guidance on everyday struggles we all face. We've covered so many real topics with truly real talks on topics like dating, fear, anxiety, waiting, and more. Do you ever say "yes" to not let others down? Are you spread too thin due to overcommitment? Does your skin crawl when you don't have a hand in every little thing around you? We got you sis. This week we are diving into an issue we all face...saying "yes" all too often and a major contributing factor, "FOMO" (fear of missing out). Yes, its time to have this conversation! When is "yes" the right thing to say? When is it wrong or unhealthy? And most importantly, what does the Word say? Face it, sister, you've spread yourself too thin on the wrong "yes'." We know because we have lived it, and are still living it... who's ready to OVERCOME?!? Its time to redirect our FOMO from other's expectations to God's plan. I don't wanna miss out on what He has for me, y'all. Disclaimer: This talk isn't a "never say yes" talk...its a "seek God in ALL" talk! YES, God has assignments for you to say "yes" to! NO, not all assignments are for you! This is a priority talk, sisters. A choice talk...and we are preaching to ourselves more than anything! Y'all can find this week's recording on our YouTube channel, or click here to stream our podcast directly from our site, or subscribe to our podcast here on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google Play.   Here's some high points you DON'T want to miss or forget: Colossians 3:23If we are giving into everyone else but God, then that's when everything else becomes an idol. Are you spreading yourself too thin to please someone else? The 2 most important words in the English language are "yes" and "no."How we spend time is like currency. What is how you're spending your time worth to you? We are only given 168 hours in a week. How are we budgeting our time? Once its spent, you can't get it back!Don't justify what God is calling you to! What is more important...His way or yours? There's ALWAYS a tradeoff with how we spend our time. No prayer, no peace. No Bible, no wisdom. How are you spending your soul?"Yes" may be "less" sometimes, but trust that God is always positioning you for MORE with your "yes" for HIM. Don't mistake God saying "wait" for God saying "no." The "wait" command from God is always for your good. God will not tell you to wait unless the wait is worth it. God will not tell you to stop or say no unless He is protecting you. Trust Him. When you know who you are in CHRIST, decisions come SO much easier. The Holy Spirit is here to HELP you! Do you truly believe that God has the BEST yes and intentions for your life?

No Bible class was held on Sunday due to Messiah's Easter Sunday celebration schedule, but Pastor Otte and Phil Kasper sat down on Good Friday to talk about a meditation call "The Scapegoat". We discuss how we may discern assigning blame versus holding a person accountable, how the term hate may be used, and how, even though we all are hypocrites in one way or another, that should not keep us from witnessing to others about Jesus Christ.

Writing on the Wall 4- The Battle with Sin

In this series I have laid out reason why I believe the writing is on the wall for our nation. Never before have we seem the proliferation of sin across our society on the scale we are seeing today, and mark my word, we will reap what we are sowing in the lives of the next generations.   We are engaged in a battle to the death with sin, both in our own lives and across society! Make no mistake, these battles we see are not about fairness, equality or catering for a small minority who want to express their sexuality, it’s not about inclusiveness and love is love or my body is my body, this is a battle to the death. Either we kill sin, or sin kills us!   Romans 6:23 (ESV Strong's) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.   This war is not just a physical battle, it is spiritual, and it is a life and death battle for the very survival of life as we know it.   Ephesians 6:12 (ESV Strong’s) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.   So today we will examine how we can fight and win in this terrifying war against sin...     CHECK THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT   The first thing we must realise is that our conscience is our friend, not our enemy in the battle against sin. Our society tells us the conscience should be seared, dulled or hardened, because it makes us feel guilty for the sins we commit, and we don’t like that! Society says, “It’s not your fault,” so instead of recognising sin we ignore it, suppress it and if confronted by it, we shift the blame to our parents, our spouse, our upbringing, our situation or our recently diagnosed mental illness.   When the check engine light comes on, society urges us not to look deeper and find the cause, but to put a sticker over it and ignore it! They reason, if you ignore it long enough, maybe the light will go out. Meanwhile sin rises victorious, God’s standards are flaunted, our children are corrupted and healthy babies are murdered, and all the while we hear no evil, see no evil and say nothing!   Ezekiel 3:18 (ESV Strong's) If I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.   It is time to fight and kill sin in our own life and across our society, because if we don’t kill him, he will surely stop at nothing to kill us!   THE BATTLE RAGES   The apostle Paul faced this very dilemma in Romans 7. Listen to what He says…   Romans 7:14-15 (ESV Strong's) For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.   Romans 7:19-20 (ESV Strong's) For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.   Romans 7:23-24 (ESV Strong's) but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?   Paul struggled with sin, he fought the good fight, and so must we. Church, we must never put a sticker over our conscience and think we are ok, because sin will start killing us off right there. The battle rages, and though we may not totally win until we are with the Lord, we must fight and kill off sin the best we can. We start in our own lives, and as we win this battle we earn the right to speak into the nation!   KILLING OFF SIN   Colossians 3:5 (ESV Strong's) Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.   God calls us to show mercy and love to one another, and to love our enemies, even if we don’t agree with them, even if they flaunt sin in our faces and attack us. I am not suggesting hatred to gays, transgenders, abortionists or wayward politicians. I’m suggesting love to them, kindness and respect. However, I will not show kindness respect and love to the evils they perpetrate! Love people, even the evil ones, but kill off sin!   It is time to kill off sin, to fight sin to the death and win! But let me first tell you How sin is not put to death, in our lives and in our community…   1.      SIN IS NOT KILLED BY COVERING IT UP   You can hide your sin, cover it up and no one will know… except you and God.   Proverbs 28:13 (ESV Strong's) Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.   Covering it up, putting a sticker on your check engine light, actually leaves you in a more dangerous position that facing your sin and dealing with it. Covering sin doesn’t kill it, it makes it more dangerous, and starts a progression that leads to death…   James 1:15 (ESV Strong's) Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.   2.      SIN IS NOT KILLED BY INTERNALISING IT   Forsaking the outward expression of your sin, but still harbouring it in your mind and imagination does not kill the sin. Outside you look good, and no one knows the sin that still lurks within. Jesus warned religious leaders about this.   Matthew 23:24-25 (ESV Strong's) You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.   Cleaning the outside doesn’t make the inside clean, so internalising your sin doesn’t set you free, regardless of whether you look good on the outside to your friends or family.   3.      SIN IS NOT KILLED BY EXCHANGING IT   Heroin addicts are often treated with methadone, substituting one drug for another… it is less destructive, but the addiction remains. Substituting one sin for another does not solve the problem and it does not kill sin. Replacing the sin of fornication with pornography does not cure your lust.   Proverbs 23:7 (KJV Strong's) For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:   All sin is sin, so exchanging one sin for another does not kill sin, it just morphs it!   4.      SIN IS NOT KILLED BY REPRESSING IT   People try to repress sin in many ways. They try and drown it in alcohol or drugs, suppress it by escapism in movies and TV shows, and they try and repress one destructive relationship by starting another destructive relationship.  But sin is irrepressible… drink and get high all you like, when you sober up guess what… your sin is still there, bigger than ever!   Wherever you go, however you try and escape, sin will hunt you down! But here’s the great news… God will also hunt you down, and find you in your sin.   Psalms 139:7-10 (ESV Strong's) Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.   You can change jobs, change churches, change town, change country, change marriage, but your sin still goes with you. Prinze God, that your Saviour goes with you also. So don’t repress, confess.     5.      SIN IS NOT KILLED BY UNTIL THE CONSCIENCE IS CLEAR   Sin is only killed when your conscience is clear. Remember, your conscience is the check engine light, so when the underlying problem is solved, the light goes off. Don’t stop fighting sin until your conscience is purified, because partial obedience is disobedience!   Acts 24:16 (ESV Strong's) So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.   A clear conscience is a wonderful thing as we mentioned last week. While ever sin is present, even if it is tolerated, then a clear conscience is unattainable. So don’t try and substitute a dulled, a seared or a hardened conscience for the real thing. Sin isn’t dead until the check engine light is off!   12 STEP PLAN TO VICTORY OVER SIN   Killing off sin entirely is not going to happen this side of glory, but that does not mean we stop fighting.   2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV Strong's) we all, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.   We should expect our victories over sin to be ever increasing even if the final victory will not be seen until we reach Heaven.  Indeed, the ultimate victory will be ours, and every blow you land for righteousness is a victory for God and for His holiness!   So despite the recent legislative changes, I will not stay silent, and I will not stop fighting for what is right and godly! I refuse to keep silent and fade away, and I will obey the laws of this land only up until they contradict the expressed law of God.   So if we want to keep fighting sin in our own lives, and if you want to become anything in your life for Jesus you will need to keep fighting. What are the 12 steps towards killing off sin?   1.      DECIDE ENOUGH IS ENOUGH   Victory over sin starts with a decision. If you are content to just continue with your sin, if you are content to sear or dull your conscience and let it all slide along, you will never have victory over the sin that is destroying you. You have to decide, enough is enough.   Deuteronomy 30:19 (ESV Strong's) I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,   Contentment is the enemy of improvement, so victory over sin starts with a decision, a decision that you are not content to be ruled by your sin, to not accept the status quo. A decision to change is required, that enough is enough, and I want better!   2.      CONFESS YOUR SIN   1 John 1:8-9 (ESV Strong's) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   Don’t ignore your sin, and don’t excuse it away. God will not zap you, fry you or embarrass you, just confess your sin and let Him forgive you. Murder, lust, greed, it doesn’t matter what it is, He promises that if you confess your sin He will forgive you, so take Him at His Word and do it!   3.      ABSTAIN FROM FLESHLY LUSTS   I remember chasing my kids, and they would scream and run away, crying “Don’t! Stop!” When I did stop, they would walk back closer and closer to try and make me chase then again. Their “Don’t! Stop!” Became, “Don’t stop!”   1 Peter 2:11 (ESV Strong's) Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.   John MacArthur gives simple but profound advice on killing off sin… “Do you want to put to death the lusts in your heart? Then stop entertaining them. Peter does not prescribe a program of therapy. He does not suggest that such sin be treated as an addiction. He simply says abstain. Quit doing it. You have no business indulging such thoughts. Put them away at once.” [i]   My family had a cattle farm in Maryborough, and we also agisted cattle. We sent those cows off to the butcher and felt nothing, but our house cows, the ones we grew up with, and cuddled and cared for, these we could never butcher! While ever you dabble in sin, flirt with it or mollycoddled it, while ever you cuddle it, care for it or enjoy it, you will never kill it! To kill off sin, you not only need to stop it, you need to avoid not entertain it!   4.      MAKE NO PROVISION FOR THE FLESH   We may stop actually doing a sin, but we often kind of leave the door open to doing it!   Romans 13:14 (ESV Strong's) But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.   In other words refuse to accommodate in any way anything that might lead you back into that sin! If you don’t want to fall, don’t walk where it is slippery. If you have an issue with gluttony, don’t pile up your supermarket trolley with junk food. If you have an issue with lust, don’t surf porn sites. If you have an issue with gossip, walk away from people sharing secrets with you.   By doing this, you cut off sin before it gets the chance to grow and breed. It is easier to pull out a baby tree than cut down the fully grown specimen!     5.      FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS   Whatever you look at determines what you become, because as Jesus said,   Luke 11:34 (ESV Strong's) Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.   If you look at porn you will lust. If you watch violent movies or play violent computer games you will get angrier. If you hang around pubs you will drink. If you hang around church, you will grow more Christlike.    2 Corinthians 4:18 (ESV Strong's) we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.   Hebrews 12:2 (ESV Strong's) looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith   So to kill off sin, don’t constantly look at it, don’t hang around it, don’t entertain it and don’t camp outside it’s lair. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus, and on things eternal, for whatever you look at you become…   Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.     6.      FILL YOUR MIND WITH GOODNESS   If you decide not to look at sin or anything leading to it, where do you look. It’s like when Fiona and I are shopping and she takes me into a lingerie store… I don’t know where to look, where to stand, and anything you do, you’re going to look like a pervert!   Philippians 4:8 (ESV Strong's) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.   Job 31:1 (ESV Strong's) “I have made a covenant with my eyes;   So look away from sin, and fill your mind with Jesus and with good and godly things… Christian or wholesome teaching, books, videos, music, TV shows, and in particular…   7.      FILL YOUR HEART WITH GOD’S WORD   Psalms 119:9-11 (ESV Strong's) How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.   Reading the Bible every day, coming to a Bible preaching church, memorising Bible passages, do whatever you can to focus on the Word of God, and fill your heart with His Word!   I read and even memorise God’s Word a lot. I a, amazed at how often God’s Word comes out of my mouth in general conversation.   The next step is…   8.      PRAY WITHOUT CEASING   You cannot live a triumphant life over sin without prayer. Many know this verse, but note context…   1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV Strong's) Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.   Being in a constant state of prayer is an awesome way to kill off sin and it’s effects in your life. Notice the preceding and following verses? Praying constantly is about rejoicing and giving thanks constantly too! A gratitude attitude, being thankful for everything you have, is a great way to kill off the effects of sin and help you focus on Jesus and eternal things.     9.      GUARD YOUR HEART   Proverbs 4:23 (NIV-WS) Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.   You can have a few victories over sin, but you will not kill it unless you remain on guard against it. The enemy will not take your desire for holiness in your life lying down!  The devil has a habit of dressing up sin and reintroducing it. So you need to guard your heart!     10.   DISCIPLINE YOURSELF   1 Corinthians 9:25-27 (ESV Strong's) Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.   No athlete, or artist, or musician or Christian becomes great without discipline. We live in a society that applauds discipline for athletes, yet excuses lack of discipline in more important aspects of life. Top athletes are excused for misdemeanours in bars or on the road. Politicians with sordid personal lives are celebrated if they make the country prosperous.   To be victorious over sin in your life, you need to become disciplined. Hebrews explains…   Hebrews 12:11 (ESV Strong's) For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.   Discipline is painful, it takes time, effort and true commitment, but the long term gains are amazing, and allow you to kill off areas of sin in your life to a large degree. It takes time, and discipline to reach everything God has destined for you to be in your life, but this leads to…   11.   RENEW YOUR MIND- CREATE NEW HABITS   Romans 12:2 (ESV Strong's) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.   As you fill your mind with the things of God, especially the Word of God, your mind is being renewed day by day. Renewing of your mind is not simply a mental exercise, it must have a practical outworking. Renewing of your mind causes you to break old, destructive habits and establish new, righteous habits.   A habit is an series of actions you repeatedly do until they become automatic. Any addiction is really a powerful bad habit, be it drug, alcohol, porn, spending, gossiping, anger outbursts or gambling! But you can dismantle bad habits and build good habits that enhance your life rather than destroy it. Our society loves to call things addictions and enslave people forever, but my experience is that God can break bad habits, and He can also establish good ones, as your mind is renewed.   Latest research indicates that it takes around 66 days to break a bad habit or establish a new one. [ii]   When God breaks a habit off your life it can be very quick, because His Spirit can destroy the works of the enemy. One thing is for sure… if you decide in your heart to form a good habit, such as reading the Bible every morning, it can be a powerful force in your life. I personally discovered this when at University I attended a Navigator’s group and signed a pledge called, “No Bible, no breakfast.” This commitment led to me reading God’s Word first thing almost every day, and hardly ever eating breakfast!     12.   DON’T GIVE UP THE FIGHT   I know sin and the devil are mighty adversaries, and relentless foes, but my Bible says,   1 John 4:4 (ESV Strong's) he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.   Sin will fight, he will fight dirty, he will use underhanded tactics, he will be relentless, he will tempt and call and flirt and suck you in. You will have times of great victories, then some defeat will drag you back down. You will break some bad habits, and not others. But through it all, no matter what happens, stand strong, gather around people who love and support you and in the words of Winston Churchill, “Never, never, never give up.” You will get tired of fighting, it will sometimes seem that all is lost, that the sin is winning, that troubles are never ending, but that is when you have to focus on Christ, resist the enemy and decide to fight on!   James 4:7 (ESV Strong's) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.   This is the promise… resist him, and because he is a coward, he will just flee from you.   The original Rocky movie is the story of a fighter who rises up the ranks to become champion of the world, then, in all the luxury and comfort of the victories, he loses his edge, and his title. His trainer decides to take him back to the smelly alley and leaky taps, back to where he came from, and over time he puts the fight back into the fighter.   So when it comes to sin, don’t lose the fight, don’t lose the desire to win against a merciless and destructive foe! Never give up, never give an inch, resist, and see him flee! It is time to put the fight back into the fighter!   1 John 3:9 (ESV Strong's) No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.   Today I speak to those who are tired, run down and sick of struggling with sin and with life. I say to you, stand strong, fight hard, form the right habits, resist and stand firm, knowing that the Lord is in us and He is greater than any sin!   Our society may have given into sin on so many levels, but now is not the time to roll over and accept it as normal. Now is the time to stand up and declare that we will not go quietly, we will stand for what is right and godly in this world, and by God we will win!   Killing off sin is not about seeking legalistic righteousness, it’s not about judgement of others, or forcing obedience to laws, it’s about seeking  God with all your heart and seeking holiness in Him. You cannot be holy, but you can decide to yield to Him and let ahis holiness dwell in you!   Today, if you are tired of fighting, I want to pray with you and stand with you.

Acts 17:10-15 NASB – 10 The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, along with a number of prominent Greek women and men. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14 Then immediately the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 Now those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they left.

However, the MAIN reason is that the LORD wants to give you a message for direction, protection or enablement. The principles of God are timeless and transfer … and if we are students of God’s Word and have the knowledge of Proverbs we are able to navigate the problems and challenges of life. ________________________________________ LISTENING TO THE SPIRITDIRECTION AND HELP~ A MIRACLE PODCAST PRODUCTION ~ INTRODUCTION “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.” – Jesus: John 16:13 One of the Holy Spirit's assignments is to glorify Christ. For example, one time after a large seminar I was conducting in Chicago a lady came up to me and said, “I have two wombs …” I had already finished praying with people and I was really wanting to go to the place where I was to stay and go to bed. Study my book, How to Receive God’s Power with Gifts of the Spirit. Here are THREE resources to help you: “New Testament Bible Studies” … “Prophecy, Transition & Miracles … and “How To Receive God's Power with Gifts of the Spirit.” New Testament Bible Studies Prophecy, Transition & Miracles How To Receive God's Power with Gifts of the Spirit Baruch haba b'Shem Adonai. Can we actually share our body of Christ in the Ascension Center as Spiritual Beings who are called ACE Metaphysicians? We are sharing our spiritual gathering of metaphysicians. We want to share that we enjoy our communication of information sharing. Would we allow ourselves to know of those who are sharing the Spiritual Goddess Energy with the "Laying on of Hands" as more than annointing the head? Various topics feel as though they are on trials. Using the word GOD with a Big G is that now a thing of  the past. Is GOD now strictly the SOURCE and CO-Creation? We are each sharing our own life stories as we write them with our own choices. How do we maintain who we are in our art, culture, traditions? We are getting into some heavy topics in 2016 including what is important as Christians? Why is believing seen as something bad? If everything is energy then we are all energy. We are all of the co-created source. We are called creationist as metaphysicians who share in culture, rituals, traditions, symbols and ceremony. However what are we now allowed to do in our churches? Is churches and the people who made this country great a thing of the past? What is going on? No Bible in a court of LAW? Why? Intereesting stuf we should know. Know your rights as a citizen/

Andrew Cowell 19.10.14 Duration: 41.45 Key Verses: Luke 10:38-42 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." — Lk 10:38-42 logos.biblia.init(); How to Read Your Bible The important thing about reading the Bible is to have a personal encounter with Jesus through: 1. Stopping - Switch off but don't Switch Out. 2. Seeking - Speak to me through Your Word. Read until you feed. Chew it Over. Today Jesus said to me … 3. Submitting - Trust and Obey. 4. Sticking with it - No Bible no Breakfast. (or no Social Media, no sleep, no …) What is the most important thing when it comes to study the Bible? Information, Transformation or an Encounter? The simple answer it to use "Biblical Information" as a spring board to enjoy a "Personal Encounter with God" that results in "Spiritual Transformation".

APOSTLE TALK - Future News Now! WWW.REALMIRACLES.COM with Prince Handley POWER TWINS FOR SUCCESS AND VISION - PART 2 DESCRIPTION: How to receive the second pair of Power Twins for success and vision. The importance of rest for creativity, development, and new experiences. Why it is extremely important to be eccentric in the eyes of society. The remaining Power Twins will be discussed in subsequent teachings. POWER TWINS FOR SUCCESS AND VISION - PART 2 I guarantee you success and continued vision! You will not be barren or unfruitful, if you practice what I am teaching you in this series. Also, you will have an abundant entrance into Heaven. Remember, there are rewards in Heaven for your labor of love and faithfulness here on earth. Jesus wants to say to you when you enter Heaven: "Well done, you good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of the Lord." [ Matthew 25:21] You need continued vision for vitality. The Bible says, "Without a vision, the people perish." [Proverb 29:18] To be successful in this life and to prepare for life in Heaven . . . and to maintain continued vision so we will be fresh and vibrant . . . there are eight (8) TWIN STRATEGIES to help you. In the last teaching we discussed the FIRST TWO TWINS for success and continued vision: Enthusiastic Desire PLUS Faith; and, Decisive Nature PLUS Virtue. To review these first two twins, go to the Archives of previous podcasts. We will discuss the next two (2) twins in this teaching. They are as follows: Specialized Knowledge PLUS Spiritual Knowledge; and, Quest for Excellence PLUS Temperance. The remaining twins for success and continued vision will be discussed in subsequent teachings. SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE PLUS SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE If you are going to be used greatly by God, then you will have to make up your mind ahead of time that you are willing to do things . . . and exploits . . . that are out of the ordinary. Jesus did not fit into the normal mold of man, even though He was God in human flesh. He was a perfect man . . . but he was focused on doing the will of God . . . not the will of man. Likewise, if you make the decision to do the will of God during your time here on earth, then neither will you will fit into the normal mold of man: you will seem eccentric to the world. You will find yourself continuously "ahead of the curve." The definition of eccentric is as follows:        1. Unconventional and slightly strange;        2. Not placed centrally or having its axis placed centrally. But you see, this definition is from the perspective of what is “normal? and God did NOT call us to be normal by the world’s standards. Rather, the normal Christian life is abnormal to the world. The origin of the word “eccentric? is from the Greek “ekkentros?: “ek? meaning “out of? plus “kentron? meaning “center? or “out of center.? John Steward Mill gives an insightful comment of truth concerning this: “Eccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of character has abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in society has always been proportioned to the amount of genius, mental vigor and moral courage which it contained. That so few men now dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of our time.? Specialized knowledge is highly dependent upon genius and mental vigor. The second of these two, mental vigor, can complement what may be lacking in the first of the two: genius. What is that GREAT THING you want to do for God? Do you have the SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE to attain that goal? Are you willing to sacrifice, study, and research to obtain the knowledge required to complete the task? Don’t be a lazy Christian. God did not call us to complacency, but rather to excellence. I have been on this planet for several scores of years, and I still spend much time studying and researching to find NEW, BETTER, and MORE PRODUCTIVE ways to reach the world for Christ and to help my fellow man. Don’t be afraid . . . and never get too old . . . to go back to school for more formal education. One of the best schools for Christians to learn MEDIA PRODUCTION, and one which I fully endorse, is “Full Sail Real World Education? based in Orlando, Florida, USA. They may be contacted by phone at 800.226.7625 or 407.679.6333. FAX to 407.678.0070. You may contact them on the web at WWW.FULLSAIL.COM. Some of their major fields of study are: Film; Digital Media; Recording Arts; Computer Animation; Entertainment Business; Show Production and Touring; Game Design and Development. You can tell them that Prince Handley recommended you. We are living in a day like the prophet Daniel described where “knowledge shall be increased? and we should take advantage of it to advance the kingdom of God. Daniel, in a passage of scripture dealing with the end times, tells us “ . . . but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.? [Daniel 11:32] Exploit, in the sense used here, means literally “to do successively unfolding bold, courageous works!? There are many other ways to influence society and to reach the world for Christ other than through the media. And there are many NEW ways to help yourself gain SUCCESS! Pray and ask God to reveal these to you. Then, obey Him and be diligent to study in order to prepare yourself to be used by the Master: to be a good steward. No amount of SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, however, will be of significant time value without SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE. No matter how successful we become in life, it will not be of any time value unless we know God personally. If we know God through His Son, Jesus the Christ, then we have eternal life. [John 3:16] One of the measures of a man's success in life is how many of his children make it to Heaven. If we know the Lord, we are living part of our eternal life NOW, while here on earth, and then in Heaven. It will never end! Jesus taught us, "What does it profit a man if he gains all the world, and loses his own soul? Also, what shall a man give in exchange, or to buy back, his soul?" [Mark 16:26 - Mark 8:36] We need to have TOTAL success in life: in this life on earth and in the eternal beyond; and God has provided just such means to attain that goal. God has given us everything we need for: LIFE, and GODLINESS. "According as His divine power has given unto us ALL THINGS that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that has called us to glory and virtue." [2 Peter 1:3] He has given us PROMISES so that we can share or partner with Him in His divine expansion - or growth of descendants - after we have escaped, by His saving grace, the ruin that is in the world through lust. In other words, after we are born again and start serving Christ, we can partner and be a companion with God in successfully bearing fruit: that is, growing other seed-descendants. These include our own children who are born again while also reaching out to the rest of the world. "Whereby are given to us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." [2 Peter 1:4] We should BELIEVE this and EXPECT it. Our children should be our greatest disciples. If not, something is wrong, or out of place. Learn the PROMISES in Gods Word; believe them and appropriate them by faith. Take quality time daily to study and meditate in God’s Word. I usually separate my “study time? from my “devotional time.? In the morning, before I start my active day, I have my devotional time where I just want God to speak to me and minister to me through His Word, even before I have my prayer time. I made a rule years ago: “No Bible, no breakfast.? Eat the Word of God first. Jesus said, “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.? [Matthew 4:4 and Torah - Deuteronomy 8:3] When you study the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you, and to teach you so you can teach others. The scripture instructs us, “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.? [2 Timothy 2:15] Combining SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE with SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE will provide you a powerful impetus for ongoing success and continued vision. To be really successful we need to share our success with others: our family, our brothers and sisters in Christ, our community, and the world. THE MORE YOU KNOW . . . THE MORE THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN USE! This applies not only to mental knowledge but also knowledge gained through the acquisition of physical skills or craftsmanship. Bezaleel was such a man: “And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying, See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.? [Exodus 31:1-5] When SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE is combined with SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE, there is a holy anointing upon our lives: our talents, skills, and abilities. Together, they not only complement each other, but they synergize each other. You will be a candidate for MIRACLES - real miracles! But always remember: “Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.? [1 Corinthians 8:1] Temper your knowledge (both specialized and spiritual) with LOVE! Daniel was a leader, counselor, and basically Prime Minister in three different foreign kingdoms (in which he was captive) partly because of his knowledge base. The Bible tells us concerning Daniel and the three Hebrew teenagers who accompanied him into captivity: “Children in whom was no blemish, but well favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability . . .? [Daniel 1:4] QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE PLUS TEMPERANCE The Bible tells us another of the secrets of Daniel’s success: “It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; and over these three presidents: of whom Daniel was first, so that the princes might give accounts unto the presidents, and the king should have no damage.? “Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an EXCELLENT spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.? [Daniel 6:1-3] The word here used for “excellent? is “yateer? and in its root form means “preeminent, or very exceedingly excellent.? That’s because the spirit that was in Daniel was the Holy Spirit. Because of Daniel’s separation and devotion to God, he manifested a quality of excellence in whatever he attempted. The Greek word for virtue in the New Testament is “arete?: it means excellence and valor. We need to be people of EXCELLENCE. Our nature should be to make excellent decisions based upon virtue. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. Knowing that of the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.? [Colossians 3:23-24] Don’t compare yourself with someone else; just do what you know God wants you to do. Do your best, don’t be satisfied with low quality work or effort. It’s interesting that the origin of the word mediocre is from the Latin “mediocris? which means of “middle height or degree? but literally means “somewhat rugged or mountainous.? It is derived from the words “medius? for “middle? and “ocris? for “rugged mountain.? To do mediocre work is actually harder on you because you are causing your conscience to condemn you. It is like climbing a rugged mountain. The Bible says, “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.? [1 John 3:20] The EXCELLENT choice may be more of a sacrifice temporarily, but it will be easier on you in the long term. You will never go wrong striving for excellence! Practice excellence in your CHARACTER. Be transparent and keep your word. Psalm 15 is a good start for practical living and developing excellence in character. Also, loving our neighbor as we do ourself, and doing unto him as we would have him do to us, also is the guideline our Master set before us. Practice excellence in your WORK. Be a good steward for you earthly employer and your Heavenly employer. Colossians 3:22 instructs us NOT to do sight-labor, that is: work that needs watching ... or working because someone is watching. In your quest for excellence, develop your skills to the BEST of your ability. Be a good manager of what God has given you and over which God has placed you. Keep improving and growing in your knowledge base, your acumen, and your skills. Study Part 1 of this teaching to help develop excellence in acumen; study the section on “Decisive Nature and Virtue.? Along with the quest for excellence you need to partner with temperance, or self control. Many people, on their quest for excellence, do NOT allow for rest or leisure. This is vital to SUCCESS and CONTINUED VISION. Rest, and also quietness, is necessary for wholeness. A key scripture and principle that I have tried to practice in my life for many years is found in Isaiah 30:15: “For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: In returning and rest shall you be saved; and in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.? The word leisure comes from the Latin word “licere? which means “to be permitted.? The Latin word for work is “negotium? which means “nonleisure.? Most so-called advanced societies today have turned this around and view leisure as nonwork! Tim Hansel, in his book When I Relax I Feel Guilty, points out that the Greeks stressed the centrality of lesiure, but they added another important facet. The Greek word for work was “ascholia,? which means “absence of leisure.? The word for leisure was “schole,? which leads to the English words for school and scholarship. Leisure, then, was a time for growth and development. Leisure is more than just nonwork. It is when we PERMIT ourselves time for rest, growth, and development. Leisure is BOTH the embryo and the catalyst for creativity, and for NEW experiences, people, play, and places. We have to permit ourselves the time to rest . . . to re-create . . . and to create! In the last teaching we discussed the FIRST TWO TWINS for success and continued vision: Enthusiastic Desire PLUS Faith; and, Decisive Nature PLUS Virtue. In this teaching we discussed the third and fourth twins: Specialized Knowledge PLUS Spiritual Knowledge; and, Quest for Excellence PLUS Temperance. The remaining twins for success and continued vision will be discussed in subsequent teachings. _____________________________________________________________ If you have been helped or received a miracle as a result of this study, email us and let us know what God has done for you.
