It's our now-annual recap of the year as Anahit, Jamie, Ellie and Peter pick out some of the favourite performances, moments, needle drops and hot boys of the past year in the kino. You know we love Challengers and Love Lies Bleeding, but did you know we also loved a slept-on Koreeda banger, a queer time-hop costume drama and shouting about bad romcoms? You did? WHO WE ARE AND WHERE WE ARE. Sir Steve McQueen CBE is a British film director, film producer, screenwriter, and video artist. Over the last 30 years he has created some of the most innovative works of moving image designed for gallery spaces. He has also directed critically acclaimed feature films, including the Academy Award-winning “12 Years a Slave”, as well as “Hunger”, “Shame”, “Widows”, “Blitz”, and “Occupied City”. “It's always good to have some kind of understanding of where you are now and why you're here now.” “I'm not a slave to the medium.” “The only reason I do what I do is because I can somehow reflect on who we are or who we want to be.”
Sorry about the audio on this one!!! I will come back to tag later this evening.

This week, Steve McQueen and his wife, historian, filmmaker and producer Bianca Stigter, are in the studio to chat with Simon about ‘Occupied City', their four-hour documentary about the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam from 1940-45, which is based on Stigter's book on the subject. Mark gives his thoughts on the film, along with reviewing ‘Your Fat Friend', a documentary that charts the rise of writer and activist Aubrey Gordon from anonymous blogger to NYTimes best-selling author and podcaster, whose goal is to shift the way we see fat people in the world and the fat on our own bodies; and ‘The Iron Claw', the Zac Efron-starring true story of the Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Plus, we find out about the exciting cinematic events happening around the UK. Preschools that receive state funding largely can't expel or suspend students. What does that mean for schools that have seen an uptick in bad behavior? Roughly 250,000 illegal border crossings took place in December. But the numbers don't tell the full story when it comes to the complex issue of immigration. Critics review the latest film releases: “Night Swim,” “Occupied City,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “Good Grief.” Michigan will face Washington in the College Football Playoff National Championship. What to expect from that game, plus the NFL playoffs?
The director and writer of Occupied City join us this week to explain how they crafted this very particular and precise cinematic experience, which presents a unique approach to a dark chapter in world history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Filmmaker Steve McQueen's new documentary, "Occupied City," takes the book Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945), written by his wife Bianca Stigter, and turns it into a film by exploring various locations around Amsterdam that were important to the history of Nazi occupation of the city. Stigter and McQueen discuss the film, which premieres in theaters on Christmas Day.

"Occupied City" had its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its striking vision from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen ("12 Years A Slave") as he and his producing partner (and real-life partner) Bianca Stigter ("Three Minutes: A Lengthening") adapted her picture book "Atlas of an Occupied City, Amsterdam 1940-1945" during COIVD and shot on location in Amsterdam. The 262-minute long film was further screened at the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival (which is where this interview took place) and will be released by A24 theatrically this Christmas. McQueen and Stigter were kind enough to spend some time talking with me about the film, which has now been nominated for three Critics Choice Documentary Awards, including Best Historical Documentary, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Please be sure to take a listen and check out the film, which will be playing in limited release on December 25th from A24. Thank you, and enjoy!

On today's episode, FC co-deputy editor Devika Girish sits down with Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen, whose new documentary Occupied City was one of the early standouts at the festival. It's a more than four-hour opus that combines a voiceover drawn from a book written by Bianca Stigter, McQueen's collaborator and spouse, about the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam, with footage of the city shot by McQueen in the last three years. The result is a haunting superimposition of the past and the present that makes us think about the ways in which the spaces we occupy today are resonant with history. Devika talked to McQueen about the genesis of the film, the experience of making it during the pandemic, and why it feels so crucial to revisit history right now.

It was a case that gripped Japan. Shimoyama Sadanori, head of Japan National Railways, was found dead on the tracks of a commuter rail line one July morning in 1949. The day before he disappeared he'd released a list of 30-thousand rail employees who were about to lose their jobs. Was it suicide - or murder? Kathryn speaks with David Peace, who has written three books set in the post-war period of occupation in Japan. He started with Tokyo Year Zero, then Occupied City and he rounds his trilogy off with Tokyo Redux - a gritty look at what may have happened to President Shimoyama through the eyes of three investigators over a 40 year period.
JOE THOMAS, author of BRAZILIAN PSYCHO chats to DAVID PEACE about his new novel TOKYO REDUX, the final part of his Tokyo trilogy, also why David's fiction focuses on real events, how his writing has developed over the years, key influences such as Derek Raymond and Jean-Patrick Manchette, crime fiction as social critique and living in Tokyo. TOKYO REDUX Tokyo, 1949, President Shimoyama, Head of the National Railways of Japan, goes missing just a day after serving notice of 30,000 job losses. In the midst of the US Occupation, against the backdrop of widespread social, political and economic reforms - as tensions and confusion reign - American Detective Harry Sweeney leads the missing person's investigation for General MacArthur's GHQ.1964 - as the city prepares for the 1964 Olympics, Hideki Murota, a former policeman, now a private investigator, is given a case which forces him to go back to confront a time, a place and a crime he's been hiding from for the past fifteen years. In the autumn and winter of 1988, as the Emperor Showa is dying, Donald Reichenbach, an aging American, eking out a living teaching and translating, sits drinking by the Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, knowing the final reckoning of the greatest mystery of the Showa Era is down to him. DAVID PEACE was born and brought up in Yorkshire. He is the author of the Red Riding Quartet (Nineteen Seventy Four, Nineteen Seventy Seven, Nineteen Eighty and Nineteen Eighty Three) which has been adapted into a three part Channel 4 series, GB84 which was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Award, and The Damned Utd, the film version of which was adapted by Peter Morgan and stars Michael Sheen). Tokyo Year Zero, the first part of his acclaimed Tokyo Trilogy, was published in 2007, the second part, Occupied City, in 2009, and TOKYO REDUX in 2021. JOE THOMAS is the author of the São Paulo Quartet - Paradise City, Gringa, Playboy and Brazilian Psycho - and Bent, his first London novel.Crime Time This episode produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate and Leigh
In the wake of the coronavirus epidemic and shutting down of much of the UK's cultural life, we have decided to bring you a series of interviews with contemporary artists, writers, filmmakers and other cultural figures, conducted via Skype (so apologies for the diminished audio quality), about their practices, the political issues that inspire them and the socio-economic conditions that have shaped their work.
