The fiscal trend during FY21 turned a corner in the October-December quarter with sequential improvement in revenues, particularly in GST and income tax collection, alongside already-elevated excise duty collections helped by higher petroleum taxes. With pandemic risks largely capped for now, India has experienced a faster-than-expected pace of economic normalization. However, at the end of November the government’s fiscal deficit soared to 135.1% of FY21 Budget Estimates (BE). So, the crucial question is how will the FM tackle the pesky issue of fiscal deficit in the budget. Will the budget lean towards fiscal prudence? To discuss that Mint's Nasrin Sultana is joined by Aditi Nayar, Principal Economist, Icra.

Indian benchmark indices look set to take a pause after Monday's stellar rally, with SGX Nifty futures trading 32 points down at 14,463 around 7.15 am, tracking weak cues from global peers. Besides a financial stability report by the Reserve Bank that raises concerns on the banks' financial health might also dampen the mood. In overnight trade, Wall Street’s main indices closed lower as investors took some profits while they waited for earnings season to begin and eyed events in Washington with trepidation. Investors believe a bigger stimulus could be delayed as House of Democrats introduced a resolution to impeach US President Donald Trump, accusing him of inciting insurrection following a violent attack on the Capitol by his supporters. Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.29%, the S&P 500 lost 0.66% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.25%. Tracking a weak finish for Wall Street, markets in Asia opened lower. Japan’s Nikkei slipped 0.48%, South Korea’s KOSPI fell 0.91% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index futures lost 0.54%. While global cues paint a grim picture, the market bulls may take some strength from the strong GDP growth projections for India and development on the Covid vaccine front. According to a report by UBS global research, India's economy is expected to clock the fastest growth among Asian peers with higher than 11.5 per cent growth in FY22 amid fast falling active COVID cases. Meanwhile, rating agency Icra too sees double-digit growth for the Indian economy at 10.1% in the FY22, however, it cautioned that in absolute terms the country’s GDP would only “mildly” surpass the levels of FY20. In another positive development, India has signed the first purchase agreement for the government-sponsored Covid vaccination programme with Serum Institute of India. The first consignment of vaccines is likely to be shipped by air on Tuesday morning, said a Business Standard report. Besides that, market participants will also eye the Industrial Production and Manufacturing Production data for the month of November, along with CPI inflation for December that are slated to be out today.  That apart, cryptocurrency bitcoin crashed 20.1 per cent to $30,500. The cryptocurrency had more than doubled in price from early December to a record $42,000 on Friday, leading some investment banks to warn of an impending bubble.  Now, a look at the stock-specific developments that are likely to sway the market today: Bank stocks are likely to be in focus today after RBI's Financial Stability Report of December 2020 stated that banks' gross non-performing assets may rise to 13.5% by September 2021, from 7.5 per cent in September 2020 under the baseline scenario. The bank-level NPA had touched 14.7 per cent in 1998-99. Tata Motors share will likely react to a 9 per cent YoY fall in Jaguar Land Rover's retail sales in the October-December period. The sales were, however, up by 13.1 per cent on a QoQ basis. Gail's board is scheduled to meet on January 15 to consider the proposal of buyback of shares. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved acquisition of share capital in Adani Green Energy by a subsidiary of Total SE. Karnataka Bank, Tata Elxsi, Steel Strips Wheels are among 10 other firms scheduled to release their December quarter results today.

The benchmark equity indices extended their record-breaking bull run in the past week, hitting all-time highs on almost all days. In the last five trading sessions, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty added almost 2 per cent each. This week markets are likely to take cues from Q3 earnings, a host of macroeconomic data and global trends. Meanwhile, progress on the coronavirus vaccine front, which India is looking to roll out from January 16, and a bigger stimulus in the US would also be in focus. When markets open for trading today, they will react to the Q3 numbers reported by IT major Tata Consultancy Services whose profit jumped 7% YoY in the December quarter to Rs 8,701 crore. Shares of Avenue Supermarts are likely to be in focus too as the firm posted a 16% jump in profit. That apart, a number of companies are also slated to release their Q3 numbers this week, including Infosys, Wipro, HCL Tech, HDFC Bank, Filatex India, Tata Elxsi, L&T Finance Holdings, PVR and Karnataka Bank to name a few. Besides this, market participants will eye the macroeconomic data such as the Industrial Production and Manufacturing Production data for the month of November, along with CPI inflation for December that are scheduled to be released on January 12, while WPI inflation for December is slated on January 14. According to a Reuters poll, India’s retail inflation likely fell sharply in December, landing within the Reserve Bank of India’s target range, due to a significant drop in vegetable and food prices. Meanwhile, there are expectations that industrial production likely expanded for the second month in a row after six months of contraction. Any development on the global front too will sway the market sentiment back home. US President-elect Joe Biden last Friday said he will deliver a coronavirus relief plan costing “trillions” of dollars next week and the markets will likely react to that, and also to the US jobless claims due on Thursday. Lastly, movement in crude oil prices and rupee, along with inflows from FIIs would be of keen interest for the markets. And now, let's take a look at the trade setup for today Tracking a strong finish for Wall Street in overnight trade on Friday, Indian markets are set to kick off the week on an upbeat note, hitting yet another record high at the open. SGX Nifty futures were trading 72 points up at 14,448. However, tepid cues from Asian peers are likely to limit gains for benchmark Sensex and Nifty. Asian shares took a breather as “trillions” in new US fiscal stimulus plans were set to be unveiled this week, stoking a global reflation trade. S&P 500 futures slid 0.5%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.6% while South Korea’s Kospi index advanced 2.7%. On the stock-specific front, shares of TCS and Avenue Supermarts will be in focus after reporting strong Q3 numbers. Drug major Cipla is recalling over 5.8 lakh packets of a drug for the reduction in the occurrence of gastric ulcers from the US market, as per a report by the US Food and Drug Administration. Tata Steel's total output from India operations rose 3% to 4.60 million tonnes (MT) during the October-December quarter of the current financial year. Bharti Airtel announced the appointment of Pradipt Kapoor as its Chief Information Officer (CIO).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.69%, the S&P 500 gained 1.48% and the Nasdaq Composite added 2.56%. Tracking a firm close for Wall Street, Asian stocks opened higher, with Japan hitting a three-decade high as investors looked beyond rising coronavirus cases and political unrest in the United States and bet on an economic recovery later in the year. Futures for the S&P 500 jumped 1.48% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.84%. Gains in Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 were more moderate at 0.16% after Covid-led lockdown in one of the states. In the backdrop of this, Indian markets too looked set to kick off Friday's session on a firm footing after suffering losses for two days in a row. SGX Nifty futures traded 58 points higher at 14,268 at around 7.30 am. Besides cues from global peers, market participants are likely to react to the FY21 GDP estimates and all eyes would be on TCS, who'll kick off the Q3 earnings season today. According to an estimate released by the Central Statistics Office, India’s economy is expected to contract 7.7% in the current financial year ending in March. This could prompt the finance minister to make a push for growth in the budget next month. Meanwhile, top economists and experts are slated to hold a virtual interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, FM Nirmala Sitharaman and NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar among others today on the state of Indian Economy. That apart, it looks like there is no stopping bitcoin. The cryptocurrency has doubled in less than a month and surged to $40,000 for the first time. Now, a look at the stock-specific developments that are likely to sway the market today: Five companies, inclusing TCS, are set to report their December quarter results today. The Tata Group company is expected to post a robust performance in Q3, with analysts projecting up to 8% jump in net profit. Biocon has announced that the board of its subsidiary Biocon Biologics has approved a capital injection of $75 million from Abu Dhabi-based ADQ. Vodafone Idea has moved the Supreme Court to seek a modification on orders which had held that the Rs 58,400 crore claimed by the telecom department to be the final AGR due amount, pointing out arithmetical errors in the government’s calculations, a media report stated. In overnight trade, Wall Street ended the choppy session marginally higher ahead of the outcome of the Senate runoff elections in the battleground state of Georgia, which will determine the balance of power in Washington. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.55%, the S&P 500 gained 0.71% and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.95%. The latest exit polls gave a slight edge to the two Democratic challengers who need to win both races for Democrats to gain US Senate control from Republicans. Along with their narrow majority in the House of Representatives, a “blue sweep” of Congress could usher in larger fiscal stimulus. It could also pave the way for President-elect Joe Biden to push through greater corporate regulation and higher taxes.   Even in Asia, investors anxiously awaited the outcome of US runoff elections and traded on a mixed note. While Australian shares dipped 0.43%, Japan's Nikkei added 0.1% and South Korea’s Kospi Index topped the 3,000 level for the first time. Futures for the S&P 500 fell 0.07%. Meanwhile, crude oil prices held overnight gains and traded near $54 per barrel after Saudi Arabia on Tuesday pledged to cut an extra 1 million barrels a day of crude output in February and March. Brent crude futures were up 0.67% at $53.88 per barrel. They had surged 4.9% on Tuesday. Amid this backdrop, Indian equity markets were set to start Wednesday's session on a muted note as SGX Nifty traded 5 points down at 14,221. Besides this, a report by World Bank predicting a 9.6 per cent contraction in Indian economy in the fiscal year 2020-21 could give market bears another reason to return to the Street today. Investors will also keep an eye on Markit Services PMI and Fed minutes that are slated to be released later today. That apart, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to present the Union Budget on February 1, media reports on Tuesday stated. Now, a look at the stock-specific developments that are likely to sway the market today: HDFC Bank on Tuesday said the bank has witnessed a loan growth of 19 per cent to Rs 10,82,000 crore during the third quarter ended December 2020. Indian benchmark indices are likely to snap their 9-day winning run and open with deep cuts tracking poor cues from global peers. At around 7.25 am, Nifty futures on the Singapore Exchange traded 103 points down at 14073, indicating a gap-down start for Indian markets. The losses follow a sharp slide on Wall Street on Monday, the first trading day of the year, as risk appetite ebbed amid upcoming runoff elections in Georgia and the persistent surge in coronavirus cases. Runoff elections in Georgia, which are set to determine whether Democrats take effective control of Congress to push President-elect Joe Biden’s agenda, are impacting market sentiment. Traders are weighing scenarios such as the possibility of greater US fiscal stimulus, higher taxes and more regulation under such a so-called “blue wave.” All three main indices hit two-week lows. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.25%, the S&P 500 lost 1.48% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.47%. Consequently, Asian shares too edged lower on Tuesday. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.12% while Australian stocks fell 0.16%. Japanese shares lost 0.47% after a media report that the government will curb business hours in Tokyo and surrounding cities from Thursday. In another development, nearly 56 million people in England will return to a full coronavirus lockdown, possibly until mid-February, to try to cut spiralling infection rates, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday. That apart, bitcoin’s rally fizzled as the famously volatile cryptocurrency sank as much as 17% before steadying. Bitcoin was last down 8% at $30,542. Now, a look at the stock-specific developments that are likely to sway the market today: All the three bidders of DHFL -- Oaktree, Piramal and the Adani group -- have valued the housing finance company's shares at zero, thus giving no upside to its shareholders when it is offered to the highest bidder by January 14. As on Monday, DHFL had a market valuation of Rs 941 crore as its stock was traded at Rs 30 a share. HDFC's individual loan business continued to see improvement during the October-December period. For the nine months ending December 31, 2020, individual loan disbursements stood at 86% of the same period last year. Gross income from dividend during the quarter at Rs 2 crore from Rs 4 crore. Bajaj Finance's AUM rose 4.66% quarter-on-quarter to Rs 1.43 lakh crore in the October-December quarter, however, it contracted 1% year-on-year. The company added 6 million new loans in Q3 as compared with 7.7 million a year ago. Further, the total deposits of the NBFC rose to Rs 23,800 crore in Q3, up 17% year-on-year. The government and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India should allow IDBI Bank to come out of the prompt corrective action (PCA) framework before they go ahead with the stake sale in the lender, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has suggested.

The Beginning of the Good News A sermon preached by Rev. Ginger E. Gaines-Cirelli with Foundry UMC, October December 6, 2020, “The Fullness of Time” series.   Text: Mark 1:1-8 “Once upon a time...” “In the beginning was...” That’s the way it always starts off. Every story, gospel, history, chronicle, myth, legend, folktale, or old wives’ tale blues riff begins with “Woke up this mornin’...” Rock legend Steven Tyler is the source of this little truth nugget. Stories have a beginning. And in the span of human time, every beginning means that something is ending or, at least, changing. If a new story is told, the existing story is amended or released. “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” The beginning of the gospel according to Mark begins with a fragment, a sentence with no ending. I guess I’d always known that, but it struck me in a peculiar way this year. I found myself puzzling over it—probably more than it warrants. Steven Tyler came to the rescue, reminding me that maybe this sentence fragment is simply the way stories begin, a signal of a new chapter in the human story. And what a gift to receive a new chapter that begins with the promise of good news! // When bad news has been our daily bread, when we’ve had to labor to hold on to hope, when we’ve been bombarded with confusion and gaslighting and reports of violence and abuses of every kind, our bodies and spirits long for a good word, some good news. Bring on the εὐαγγελίου (euangeliou), the “gospel,” of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, the anointed one in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell! Lest we get ahead of ourselves, notice that the most ancient account of the good news of Jesus begins in the wilderness. It doesn’t begin in the party hall or throne room. It doesn’t begin in a time of peace and plenty. It doesn’t even begin in a bucolic and potentially sappified setting with a manger and glowing light. No. In Mark’s version the beginning is in the wilderness. The wilderness is where Israel rebelled against God—not once, not twice, but again and again. The wilderness is also where God continued to show up with mercy, sustenance, and guidance bringing water from a rock, manna from heaven, and elemental signs to lead the people forward. And the Jordan river where John does his baptizing runs through the wilderness and is a symbolic place of crossing over from one life to the next. Having visited that place for the first time in January of this year, I can tell you the Jordan is not a clear, sparkling river. Anthony accidentally drank some of the water I’d set aside to bring home and was afraid he was a goner. Just sayin. That place now as then is a place surrounded by violence and struggle and deep-seated enmity among people and nations. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ starts with a fragment, echoes of prophecy cried out by John, reverberating across the stark wilderness landscape of an occupied land filled with ancient enmities and alighting on the waters of a murky river. The good news begins right where it is needed—in places of struggle and uncertainty. And then, as now, good news was a draw. We are told that “all the people of Jerusalem were going out” to receive John’s “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” Would that be received by us as “good news” today? The words—“repentance”…“sins”—have become heavy with the baggage laid upon them, so heavy that they might sink to the bottom of the river once we have thrown them away. But I hope we won’t throw out the gospel truth with the bath water. And there is gospel—good news—to be found here. To repent is to acknowledge something is wrong and turn away from it. It is being honest about our sin, about the things that we have done and left undone that separate us from God and other people, things that have done harm. Just imagine if you had to eternally drag around all that baggage…imagine if there was no facility available for clearing our conscience, writing a new chapter, making new choices and commitments about how to live? A baptism with water, even iffy, murky water as found in today’s Jordan River, is a washing, a cleansing. And that is a good feeling! Think about any time in your life when you’ve not been able to have a bath or shower for a time. Perhaps it was during a hospitalization or on a mission trip or work assignment without the kinds of facilities available to most of us; or perhaps for some of us, it was during a time lived on the street or in our car. Those moments help us understand what a privilege it is to get to take a shower! After many days or weeks, you emerge from the water, feeling like a new person!  And water baptism is, at its most elemental level, a washing facility. The water baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins is an opportunity to remove at least a layer of the gunk that clogs the arteries of our hearts so that love can’t flow freely, the grime of resentment and regret that has built up on our being over the years making us—if we’re being honest—small-minded and ashamed, the prejudicial gack that has been smeared over our proverbial eyes that keeps us from perceiving what is real, from perceiving every human as our family. A water baptism is very good news! Because it means that, should we so choose, we can present ourselves acknowledging we are in need of a scrub… and emerge from the waters lighter, free, and shining…maybe like a new person! This baptism is not only found at the beginning of the good news but is, itself, the beginning of the good news. It is the necessary preparation for what comes next. Repentance and forgiveness of our sins, removes all that gunk that gets in the way and takes up space better filled with what Jesus comes to offer. John proclaims that Jesus comes to baptize us with Holy Spirit, the very breath of life and conscience and creativity and prophetic power. Prepare the way of the Lord! Take a bath! A repentance bath…forgiveness and mercy are in the water. And those beautiful, humbling gifts liberate us, open us, to receive and share the life that God promises in and through the one who is coming, Jesus. What comes next in Jesus is more powerful than our most stubborn excuses and rationalizations, more powerful than empire and all its agents and effects, more powerful than bullies, more powerful than our neuroses and our addictions, more power than the voices in our head trying to convince us we can’t be forgiven, more powerful than prejudices and bigotry encrusted in our psyches through centuries, more powerful than water, that elemental symbol of chaos and destruction, water that Jesus calms with a word, so that it drapes in gentle folds about his feet. // Writer Kathleen Norris tells of how, in her work as an artist-in-residence at parochial schools, she uses the Psalms as examples of poetry. The children, she says, are often surprised about the Psalms—the way the poetic prayers of the Bible don’t mince words or leave out painful things in human life. And Norris says the children’s writing captures much of that emotional directness and honesty. She goes on to share this: “Once a little boy wrote a poem called ‘The Monster Who Was Sorry.’ He began by admitting that he hates it when his father yells at him; his response in the poem is to throw his sister down the stairs, and then to wreck his room, and finally to wreck the whole town. The poem concludes: ‘Then I sit in my messy house and say to myself, ‘I shouldn’t have done all that.’” ‘My messy house’ says it all: with more honesty than most adults could have mustered, the boy made a metaphor for himself that admitted the depth of his rage and also gave him a way out. If that boy had been a novice in the fourth-century monastic desert, his elders might have told him that he was well on the way toward repentance, not such a monster after all, but only human. If the house is messy, they might have said, why not clean it up, why not make it into a place where God might wish to dwell?” And there it is. The beginning of the good news is a clean up job, it is a preparation of our “house” to receive Christ who fills us with new life in the power of Spirit. It doesn’t just magically happen. We’ve got to show up and do our work. We’ve got to get into the water with John. Honesty and vulnerability are required of us. Fessing up and Self-love and open hearts are required of us. But even in the wilderness, even in these days of pandemic, even in the swirl and churn of these difficult days in our nation and world, we can do something. We can do those things—honesty, vulnerability, fessing up, self-love, open heartedness—right? We are not powerless. We can wake up each morning with our minds stayed on Jesus, proclaiming that new every morning is God’s love and mercy, new every morning is a new beginning…We can look around at the mess made after we’ve made it again and say “I shouldn’t have done all that.” And then get busy cleaning it up. And, by doing so…once again, in the wilderness, in the mess, the good news is proclaimed, a new chapter begins…and we prepare the way for Christ to be born again. https://foundryumc.org/

This time out, thanks in part to the suggestion of Joe Sposto, we flash back to the show we did looking at Sid Eudy's transformation from Sid Vicious to Sid Justice in 1991-1992, going from his very unconventional WCW departure to the unceremonious end of his first WWF run. For dozens more deep dives like this, including the ongoing ECW on TNN series, all you need to do is sign up for our Patreon at just the $5/month level or higher by going to *Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets* ( http://www.patreon.com/betweenthesheets ) *.* *----------* We're back to look at (approximately) a year in the life of Sid Eudy, going from his bizarre WCW departure in Spring 1991 through his similarly bizarre WWF departure in Spring 1992. Kris and David look at the back and forth drama of Sid leading WCW on about re-signing, audio of Jim Herd answering questions from the big three newsletter writers about letting Sid out of his contract early, Sid being grossly underpaid for his role in the SummerSlam '91 main event, both the WWF and WCW's complete inability to book Sid properly, softball season and the effect it had on Sid's wrestling schedule, why Sid Justice starting as a babyface was a mistake, just how easy it would be to book Sid better, how Hulk Hogan's probably responsible for the times he was booked like an asshole, WWE retconning the original Royal Rumble '92 commentary, whether or not you can actually put urine in a Visine bottle, and MUCH more. This show is definitely not BOGUS. May Day in times of pandemic: A long march for Indian migrant workers

Business Standard Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2020 5:29

Thousands of migrant workers are left stranded at the borders across the country due to coronavirus lockdown, even on a day which is observed every year to pay tribute to the contribution of workers across the world. Yes, it's May Day or International Workers' Day. Here's a look at the status of thousands of migrant workers amid the global pandemic and also the measures announced for their welfare. Let’s begin with some good news . Indian Railways flagged its first special train to ferry 1,200 stranded migrants from Lingampally in Telangana to Hatia in Jharkhand. "The 24 coach train started at 4.50 am today (Friday)," RPF DG Arun Kumar told PTI. It's the only train to be deployed so far, he added. Incidentally Friday is also the international Labour Day. The global tally of Covid-19 patients has so far crossed the 3 million-mark. However, meeting the constant demand of testing kits and other medical equipment seems to be difficult, at least  in the near future. No doubt, the labourers/ migrant workers seem to be among those most affected.   Here's a report released on Wednesday, in which the International Labour Organization estimated a 4.5 per cent drop in working hours (about 130 million full-time jobs) across the globe in January-March 2020, compared to the previous quarter. However, the worst is yet to come in the second quarter in which a 10.5 per cent slump is expected in working hours, equaling 305 million jobs, compared to October-December 2019. Speaking of India, despite an extensive lockdown of over a month, the country’s tally of cases is increasing and it has reported more than 35,000 cases so far. There are even talks about an extension of the lockdown which has already caused turbulence in the lives of thousands of the workers. A Business Standard correspondent went to a relief camp in Sarai Kale Khan and spoke to some migrant workers. Before this we did come across news of migrant workers, first thronging the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border and then flooding Bandra station in Mumbai, in an attempt to reach their homes in far-flung areas, notwithstanding the lockdown rules. No doubt, the centre government has created relief camps for them, and provides them with food and shelter but apart from this nothing major seems to have come in picture which could help them cope with the situation. On Thursday, the Union home ministry made it clear that no separate passes are required for inter-state movement of trucks — those carrying goods or returning after delivery — during the ongoing lockdown and licence of the driver is enough. This means, all the stranded drivers at the borders could now move with a little ease. In one of our recent podcasts, Stranded migrants, students can now go home, but process is not that easy! we did talk about how people can now travel back to their home towns according to the new guidelines.   But since, the government has permitted only the roadways, except the special train we talked about, to carry out the transportation process, state governments  are citing logistical challenges in transporting thousands of people by road especially in the summer heat. They said both arranging buses in a large number and ensuring the norms of social distancing during the long travel is quite difficult. That apart, for the first time in around one-and-a-half centuries, Indian workers will have to work for 72 hours in a week (up from 48 hours a week) as five states — Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab — have amended the Factories Act of 1948 through executive orders to effect this change. However, these states have mentioned that the move is temporary in order to boost the production at factories and mines which has otherwise been affected due to the nationwide lockdown in view of the pandemic.

But the prevailing situation of telecom companies is alarming.  Vodafone-Idea last week reported widening of losses to Rs 6,438 crore in the October-December 2019 quarter against Rs 5,004 crore in the same period a year ago. The company earlier reported a massive net loss of Rs 50,922 crore for the three months ended September 30, 2019, the highest-ever in a quarter by an Indian company.  This month, Bharti Airtel also reported December-quarter loss of Rs 1,035 crore. The December Q3 scorecard marked the third straight quarter of losses for the company, which had logged a net profit of Rs 86 crore a year ago. Ever since Reliance Jio started operations in September 2016, the telecom market saw a huge decline in tariff rates and reduction in data charges, which changed the economics for some telecom players. Many smaller players were forced to exit from the market, as a result.  Jio offered cheap data and talk time to woo customers.  As of November 2019, it is the largest mobile network operator in India with over 360 million subscribers.  But this in turn forced rivals to follow suit in order to retain their customer bases, and ended up making losses in the process. To make matters worse, AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) kicked in, even as telecom companies were struggling to take on Jio. Now what exactly is AGR? AGR is the basis on which the Department of Telecom calculates levies payable by operators. Basically, it is a metric calculated from a company's gross revenues and is used to determine the levy that be imposed on the income The AGR issue is a 14-year-old case that had mobile operators locked in a legal battle with the government over the definition of of the term. While the telecom providers insisted that AGR should only include revenue from core operations and that other sources should be excluded, the Department of Telecom (DoT) maintained that AGR also embraced non-core revenue from the sale of assets, interest on deposits, rental income and such like.  Ending this legal tussle, the Supreme Court on Oct 24, last year rejected telcos' definition of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) and held that telecom service providers have to pay now fines and penalties on the unpaid fees, other than termination fee and roaming charges. The apex court allowed the Centre to recover over Rs 92,000 crore from the already financially stressed telecom industry within three months. The order came as a major blow to the two incumbent operators — Vodafone India and Bharti Airtel — and also forced them to hike tariffs. Last week, the Supreme Court slammed mobile carriers for non-payment of dues and threatened them with contempt proceedings if they didn’t pay up by March 17. The court, which had asked Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel among other companies to pay 92,000 crore rupees ($12.89 billion) in overdue levies and interest by January 23, had rejected petitions seeking a review of its order last month. The move threatens the survival of Vodafone-Idea, a joint venture between Britain’s Vodafone Group Plc and India’s Idea Cellular, as the unit is saddled with about $3.9 billion in overdue payments. The Supreme Court had on Monday even denied it protection from the invocation of the bank guarantee by the DoT, in case it failed to pay up the dues linked to AGR. Show #683   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 31st January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HYUNDAI TO DELIVER KONA ELECTRIC IN EUROPE SOONER "Hyundai has announced a “drastic” reduction in delivery times for Kona Electric in Europe. From March the Korean car manufacturer will also produce the electric model in its Czech plant." reports Electrive: "Hyundai thus confirms rumours from the middle of last year. In addition to making the electric cars in Europe, production in Ulsan, South Korea will be increased. In total, Hyundai promises to triple the availability of its Kona Electric (called Kona Elektro in Germany) for customers in Europe. The increased capacity is now to “keep pace with rising demand”, as this has exceeded expectations since the start of sales in 2018."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/30/hyunda-to-deliver-kona-electric-in-europe-sooner/   From PushEVs: "The Hyundai Kona Electric is a hatchback with a WLTP range of 482 km (300 miles) that strongly appeals to the European market. Hyundai could have made it the best selling electric hatchback in Europe last year if it wanted to. However, this year it’ll more difficult to achieve that feat, since it’ll have the competition of the new Renault ZOE, PEUGEOT e-208, Opel Corsa-e and Volkswagen ID. 3. legacy automakers will only increase the production of electric cars to minimal levels, enough to avoid EU emissions fines. We won’t see legacy automakers producing enough electric cars to challenge Tesla until 2022. In 2022 Volkswagen could take the lead with the ID. brand…"   https://pushevs.com/2020/02/01/hyundai-boosts-kona-electric-supply-to-europe/   ASTON MARTIN’S EV PLANS FALL VICTIM TO STROLL RESCUE "Aston Martin's cash lifeline from Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll has a major casualty -- the company’s push into electric cars." according to Automotive News Europe: "The launch of the full-electric Lagonda marque, due in 2022, has been stalled for three years, Aston Martin said Friday, while development of the Rapide E, the main brand’s first electric model, is under review despite being almost complete. The rethink on electrification, a costly technology previously deemed vital to Aston Martin’s future, will see the company switch focus to providing hybrid autos. It’s part of a “reset plan” that will also see unspecified job cuts and a restructuring of sales and marketing operations."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/aston-martins-ev-plans-fall-victim-stroll-rescue   HUMMER WILL RETURN AS A 1,000-HORSEPOWER ELECTRIC VEHICLE "Following months of rumors, General Motors confirmed the return of the Hummer — with an Earth-friendly twist. The name previously attached to gas guzzling SUVs will now adorn an electric car sold under the GMC brand. Set to debut in a Super Bowl ad on Sunday, February 2, the electric Hummer will have specifications that are more supercar than truck." says Digital Trends: "Called the GMC Hummer EV, the reincarnated Hummer will have 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. While a handful of cars — including the Faraday Future FF91 electric SUV — have achieved four-digit horsepower outputs, the Hummer EV will be the undisputed ruler of torque. The Hummer EV will make its first public appearance in a 30-second Super Bowl ad during the second quarter of the big game on Sunday, GMC confirmed. However, the vehicle won’t be fully revealed until May 20"   https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/gmc-hummer-ev-officially-confirmed-with-1000-horsepower/   Jalopnik had their own take on it: First, there’s the Hummer name and brand itself, which is about as anti-environmental as one could imagine. The connotation of “Hummer” has always been actively hostile to any sort of ecological awareness, in a very brutal and almost childishly reactionary way. If people drove hybrid Priuses and EV Leafs as a way to say “love the Earth” via their car, then driving a Hummer said “fuck the Earth.”" This all means that now EVs are just another kind of car in our minds. They don’t need to have their unique traits pointed out, no matter how important those traits may actually be. We’re now in the era where EVs get promoted and advertised and understood with the same delerious irrationality as any other car out there."   https://jalopnik.com/seriously-the-electric-hummer-is-a-total-change-in-how-1841363548   TESLA Q4 STORAGE DEPLOYMENTS AT ALL-TIME HIGH Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) yesterday reported a new quarterly energy storage installation record of 530 MWh, and 54 MW of solar deployments for October-December 2019. " writes Renewables Now: "The fourth-quarter (Q4) total included the first deployments of Tesla’s newest battery storage product, the commercial-scale integrated storage system called Megapack. The company deployed 1.65 GWh of energy storage in 2019, which is more than it installed in all prior years combined.  The Q4 solar deployments were up by 26% quarter-on-quarter but down 26% year-on-year. Tesla said it continued to ramp both SolarglassRoof production and installations, but did not provide specific figures."   https://renewablesnow.com/news/tesla-q4-storage-deployments-at-all-time-high-solar-at-54-mw-685363/   THE SECRET BEHIND ROLLS ROYCE’S E-PLANE When Rolls Royce in December unveiled its new electric plane, it said it would be the fastest electric aircraft, capable of achieving a top speed of 300 mph. It also said the plane will be able to fly from London to Paris on a single charge." according to OilPrice.com: "The ACCEL aircraft has three battery packs that power its three electric motors. Each pack weighs 450 kg and has a capacity of 72 kWh. According to the project manager, Matheu Parr, the best battery cell shape for the aircraft battery pack turned out to be the cylinder. These, Parr told Patel, could hold a lot of energy and could release it quickly at high power. The secret to the weight was the packaging materials: using as little as possible of those and only the lightest-weight. Yet there are some 200 companies working on electric aircraft technology. The promise is big: electric motors require a lot less maintenance than jet fuel engines, which means they are cheaper over their lifetime; they are also, of course, a lot more environmentally friendly."   https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/The-Secret-Behind-Rolls-Royces-E-Plane.html   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If I could one something extra in 2020 with EV News Daily, what would it be? India's equity markets may react to the fine-print of the Union Budget 2020 after Saturday's immediate reaction, but the focus will largely shift to quarterly earnings and rapidly spreading coronavirus. Participants will also keenly watch other developments like RBI policy and the release of key macro data. On the corporate earnings front, Bharti Airtel, Lupin, Sun Pharma, and Mahindra & Mahindra are among the major companies scheduled to declare their October-December results this week. The Reserve Bank will announce its first bi-monthly monetary policy post-Budget on Thursday. While experts aren't pinning any hope on the rate cut front this time, largely due to high inflation, the RBI's commentary on inflation and growth forecast would still be keenly watched. On the macro data front, Markit Manufacturing PMI data for January will be released today and Services PMI numbers on Wednesday. Besides, foreign fund flow, the Rupee's trajectory and oil price movement will also impact sentiments. On the global front, concerns related to coronavirus will dictate sentiments. A total of 350 people have died in China from the new virus with the first death out of the mainland reported on Sunday in the Philippines. Trading resumed in China following the Lunar New Year break. In order to minimise any panic, China’s central bank plans to inject 1.2 trillion yuan of liquidity into the markets via reverse repo operations today. Moreover, a Reuters report said that China Securities Regulatory Commission has issued a verbal directive to brokerages to bar their clients from selling borrowed stocks today. Despite these measures, stocks in Shanghai fell up to 8.7 per cent at the opening. Australia’s benchmark index opened in the red to be down 0.7 per cent while New Zealand shares faltered 1.8 per cent. The SGX Nifty was trading around Nifty's Saturday closing level. In commodities, oil futures were down on worries about a slowdown in demand with Brent crude sliding 39 cents to $56.24 a barrel, the lowest since January 2019. Giving a thumbs down to the Budget, the market benchmark Sensex logged its biggest single-day plunge in nearly five years on Saturday. Investors were disappointed as the Budget failed to live up to market expectations of growth-boosting measures. According to analysts, the Nifty is witnessing strong resistance in the sub-11,800 zones. They say that the Nifty should hold 11,650, otherwise, it can see level of 11,500 in this week. Traders should try to book profits at higher levels keeping close eye on 11,800. However, if Nifty trades below 11,600, then we can see downside movement to 11,500.

The week ahead will be dominated by the ongoing corporate results and the countdown to the Union Budget. Investors will first react to earnings of some index heavyweights which were announced post market hours on Friday and throughout the weekend. TCS reported a muted 0.2 per cent growth in consolidated net profit at Rs 8,118 crore for the third quarter while Reliance Industries posted a 13.5 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to a record Rs 11,640 crore in the October-December period of FY20. For HDFC Bank, Q3 profit jumped 33 percent, but asset quality weakened and provisions spiked. A total of 26 companies, including Just Dial, KEI Industries, and ICICI Securities, are scheduled to announce their quarterly earnings later in the day. Besides, the deadline of January 23 for the telecom companies to pay AGR dues of more than Rs 1.47 lakh crore is nearing and hence investors will track any developments on that front. The Rupee's trajectory, oil price movement, and foreign fund flow will also affect investor sentiment throughout the week. On the global level, the Bank of Japan is slated to release its interest rate decision on Tuesday while the European Central Bank (ECB) is slated to unveil its policy rate decision on Thursday. Asian shares neared a 20-month top on Monday. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan firmed 0.1 per cent, after notching its highest close since June 2018. Japan’s Nikkei added 0.2 per cent to be near its highest in 15 months. Australia’s main index scored another all-time peak and South Korea was near its best level since October 2018. The SGX Nifty was trading higher, indicating a positive start for domestic indices. In commodities, concerns about a cut in supply from Libya sent oil prices higher and Brent crude futures rose 79 cents to $65.71 a barrel. Back home, Indian equities closed flat on Friday. The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day at 41,945, up 13 points while the Nifty50 slipped 3 points to 12,352. Going forward, analysts remain upbeat and expect the index to steadily head towards next millstones of 12,400 – 12,500. Traders should play the range and buy as close as possible to supports and sell as close to resistance as possible. And, in the end, here's a trading idea for you by Angel Broking which recommends buying Alembic Pharmaceuticals for the target of Rs 690. with stop loss at Rs 551.

The stock of Tata Group automobiles company is set to post its sharpest quarterly gain in the past one decade.  Shares of cinema theatre operators were in focus with PVR (Rs 1,925) and Inox Leisure (Rs 399) hitting their respective all-time highs on expectation of strong earnings growth in October-December quarter (Q3FY20).  Shares of Prince Pipes and Fittings Ltd made a tepid market debut today and listed at Rs 160, a 10 per cent discount against its issue price of Rs 178 per share on the BSE. The stock ended the session at Rs 166.60. And, now let's take a look at how the global markets fared in today's session -  A broad gauge of Asian share markets rose to an 18-month high on Monday as Chinese equities gained, while oil touched three-month highs on a combination of US crude inventory drawdowns, trade optimism and unrest in the Middle East. Japan's Nikkei stock index finished its last trading day of the year down 0.76 per cent.

Some mosques in Sri Lanka have held Friday prayers despite warnings of more attacks after the deadly Easter suicide bombings. Muslims have been told to pray at home rather than attend communal Friday prayers. Hundreds gathered at a mosque in the capital despite warnings of more bomb attacks by Islamic State-claimed militants. The U.S. economy grew at a solid 3.2% annual rate in the first three months of the year, a far better outcome than expected amid global weakness, rising trade tensions and a partial government shutdown. The advance in the gross domestic product marks an acceleration from a 2.2% gain in the October-December period. A quarantine's in place for students and staff at the University of California and Cal State University who may've been exposed to measles and either haven't been vaccinated or can't verify they have immunity. Affected people are required to stay home. The number of measles cases across the U.S. has hit a 25-year high.

I got a call from a client the other day. He’s been trying to decide if he wants to pursue a business that is rumoured to be for sale. I say ‘rumoured’ because it certainly doesn’t seem like it’s for sale. The owner says he wants to sell, he speaks highly of the business and its potential, but he just won’t hand over the information the buyer is asking for; the latest financial statements. What on Earth is going on? I explain the possibilities in this video: https://youtu.be/BwNY7cpSZhI The first thing that is obvious is that this seller hasn’t read my best-selling book; How to Sell My Own Business. If he had, he would know that you never go out looking for buyers and talk with them before you’re completely prepared to answer all their questions and you’ve got your ‘package’ together. Putting together Confidential Business Profiles is part of what I do for my clients. From the seller’s perspective here’s what may be going on: 1. There may have been a pressing emotional or personal need which pushed the owner to decide to sell and this need may no longer be so aggravating. 2. If the business is profitable, then the longer the seller delays the sale, the more money they make in the interim. 3. There may be some pressing business needs that require their attention in the present, selling the business may actually be a ‘side project’ and doesn’t get the proper attention. 4. Outside advisors or service providers like accountants may not be available because of workloads or vacations. Let’s be clear, any delays caused by the seller are not good for the deal. They upset the buyer and buyers can be hard to find. One of the hazards of this scenario is that the more a buyer follows up and ‘chases’ the seller, the more the seller may begin to think that the buyer is in love with the business. This can cause them to believe they can get more money for the business. As a buyer, this is bad. So stop it. Stop following up, emailing and calling the seller continuously. Slow down. Look at other businesses. One of the problems from a buyer’s point of view is that they may be imagining themselves as the owner. They start to get excited and REALLY want to buy the business NOW. This is called Buyer Fever and it’s a very dangerous illness. It can cost people hundreds of thousands of dollars in over-payments when it leads them to make bad deals and not do proper due-diligence. I got a question from a viewer in Prince Edward Island the other day. He had read my 2014 best-selling book, Invest Local, and had a question about preparing information for a lawyer in order to register security on a lending deal. Many people who are contemplating investing in a small business via making a secured loan often wonder how they can make sure the borrower isn’t offering the same collateral to more than one lender. I made this video to explain how registries work and give a brief history of how they came to be. Watch: https://youtu.be/MeFAmvf6veE The PPSR registries (or UCC registries) allow you to publicly record the fact that a certain piece of property has been pledged as loan collateral. They’re the most versatile registries because you can record a lien on almost any kind of property (outside of real estate.) The system is so straight forward that many local investors register their own security using online services. This is in contrast to real estate registries which are strictly the domain of attorneys because they are so complex and every jurisdiction is unique. I’ve done dozens of deals where I’ve registered myself, using a third party service provider, as a lender in a PPSA database. I’ve also done many lien-searches when investigating the purchase of used vehicles or equipment. It’s critical to learn how this works if you want to deal in lending or used equipment because a lender’s rights under a lien don’t go away if the property is sold. Simply put, if you buy an RV and there is an outstanding loan secured against it and the loan goes into default, the lender can still take it to satisfy the debt whether you bought it or not. He thought that the central theme of the book was ‘do your homework.’ It’s not. The book’s purpose was to dispel the myth that buying a franchise is less risky than starting a business from scratch. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/JUItDU5cn-E Ed also asks what I would look for if I were buying a new franchise. Interesting question. My first idea is that I would want a fee based franchise over a royalty based one. It allows you to grow the business and keep more of the gravy for yourself. Secondly, I would need to ensure that the business systems were actually provided and worked well. I know of a two franchises who provide no operating manual and one where the systems are very poor. #15 - How the Newbery Awards Work

Books Between Podcast

Intro   Hi and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who wants to connect middle grade kids to books they will love.  I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a mom of two and a 5th grade teacher.  My students worked so hard this week that we took a break Friday afternoon and watched the first episode of A Series of Unfortunate Events together on Netflix and then when I got home my daughters wanted to watch it. The performances were great and of course, Neil Patrick Harris is hilarious as Count Olaf. If you liked the Lemony Snicket books, I think you’ll be pleased and a whole new group of kids are now going to be hooked into the series, which is always fantastic.   This is Episode #15 and Today we are discussing how the Newbery Awards work, two fantastic adventures, and I’ll answer a question about this year’s top contenders for the Newbery Award.   Main Topic - How the Newbery Awards Work   There are lots and lots and lots of Children’s Book awards but without question, the most prestigious award that recognizes quality children’s literature is the Newbery. Right now, we are almost exactly one week away from finding out which books from 2016 will earn medals this year.  So today we are diving into the who, what, where, when, and how of the Newbery Awards. And I’ll also chat about some of the controversies and include some great resources where you can find out more.   What is the Newbery? The Newbery is an annual award given by the Association for Library Service to Children - abbreviated ALSC - so if you see those four letters, that’s what they mean. The ALSC is a part of the American Library Association - the ALA. A little interesting side note - the Association for Library Service to Children has changed it’s name a couple times and so the Newbery medal itself still says “Children's Librarians' Section.” which doesn’t actually exist anymore.  The award is almost a hundred years old - it was established in 1922 and named after John Newbery, an 18th century British publisher and bookseller who was well known as one of the first publishers of children’s books.  And - the Newbery was the first children’s book award in the world.   Alright - the criteria. Let me read exactly what the ALA website says: “ The Medal shall be awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published by an American publisher in the United States in English during the preceding year.”   So the award goes to a children’s book that is distinguished, noted for significant achievement, marked by excellence, and contributing something special to American literature. It has to be an original work, in English, and the author has to be a citizen or resident of the U.S. The focus is really on the text of the work and not any illustrations and it could be any genre. And notice that it doesn’t say that it has to be a novel or even fiction. Last Stop on Market Street, last year’s Newbery winner was a picture book. And boy - were there some shocked folks last year!  The ALA criteria only states that it has to be a book for children, which is defined as up to and including age 14. So that’s a wide range to consider.   Every year there is one Newbery Winner and usually between about two and four Newbery honor books. Although - they don’t have to award any honor books and some years they have not. So that will be something interesting to look for this year.   Where & When is the Newbery awarded? The Newbery is awarded once a year in January during the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting. Don’t you just love how that sounds? “Tis a “widwinter meeting” - I’m imagining everyone wearing long luscious cloaks and carrying chalices filled with hot cocoa - and marshmallows. Sigh - it’s not really like that, is it? Alas - that’s how I’m picturing it in my head anyway. And if I ever have a chance to attend, I will wear a fancy cloak and bring some hot chocolate - with marshmallows.   So - the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits (we can’t forget the exhibits) is in Atlanta this year. Last year was Boston, previously Chicago and Philadelphia so they change location every year. The conference lasts about five days and within that time, the members of the Newbery committee meet in seclusion for two very, very full days to discuss, and vote, and eventually decide … and call the winners in the early hours of the morning the day that they are announced.  This year, the announcements are made on the morning of Monday, January 23rd from about 7:30-9 EST - along with several other fantastic awards, including the Caldecott.  And you can see it live right through the ALA website - ala.org ! Definitely have it streaming in your classroom or library or at home!   Who decides the Newbery Award? It’s a committee of 15 people and the members are public - posted right on the ALA website. But that’s about all that you’re gonna get to know! Well - you know the process and the people, but the details of the deliberation are all secret. So, let’s talk about those 15 people and then we’ll discuss their process. So how do you get to be on the Newbery Committee and be in the room where it happens? You have to be a member of the ALA and the Association for Library Service to Children.  Then there is a ballot in the spring where the members of the association elect 8 members to be on the Newbery committee. Then the ALSC president appoints the chair and six more members to make a total of 15.  If that interests you, join the ALA and the ALSC and start getting involved and see where that takes you. But - I have to say, from all that I’ve read and seen - it is an incredible amount of work. You are committing to reading as much as possible of what’s published in one year. And doing some incredibly deep analysis of those titles.   How are the books determined? Well, we’ve talked about the Who - let’s move on to the How. How in the world do these 15 committee members decide on the “most distinguished” book for children? How is the winner picked? And how do they decide on the honor books? Essentially there are three stages: 1. Nominating, 2. Discussing, and 3. Balloting.   First up, Nominating:  There are three rounds of nominations, one in October, one in November, and one in December. After many months of reading and rereading and taking notes with the Newbery manual at their side, it’s now October and members nominate three titles and include a write-up of why they think it’s worthy of the award. In November, they nominate two more with the same process, and then two more in December - making it 7 total nominations per person. So that allows for the committee members to spend October - December reading and reexamine books nominated by others so they are ready for the January debate and voting process.   The next step is Discussion. This happens right at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January where the 15 members are secluded over two days and discuss the merits of every book nominated. Then likely, they’ll move on to the potential negatives of each book under consideration and then the comparisons start. There are guidelines to the discussion (and I’ll link to those in the show notes), but essentially they debate and analyze and constantly refer back to the criteria of the award until they’re ready to start narrowing things down.   The final step: Balloting Each member of the committee writes down their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices on a ballot. 1st place vote is worth 4 points, 2nd place vote is 3 points, and a 3rd place is 2 points.  The winning title must have a majority of members (at least 8) place it as #1 and have an 8 point lead over all the other books.  If that doesn’t happen, the committee has to have another discussion, and they may decide to take some titles that got low points off the table.   And then they’ll  vote again (and maybe again) until they arrive at a winner.  After that, the Newbery committee decides if they want to choose any honor books from the nominations either selecting from the final ballots or redoing the whole process again.   Ah - what I wouldn’t give to be a fly on that wall!   Controversy about secrecy and Child-Friendliness BUT - the Newbery award is not without its critics and controversies. Some claim that a lot of the picks are unreadable and unappealing to most kids. And there’s been a recent debate over the secrecy of the deliberations. Right now, members are not allowed to reveal anything about that process ever - which books were initially nominated, why they were rejected, or how contentious the voting might have been. Former Newbery and Caldecott committee members, Kathleen Horning  and Ed Spicer, both wrote articles about the benefits of time-limits on the confidentiality of the selection process.  They make excellent points about  the benefits to readers, authors, and to history. On the other hand, Caldecott winner Dan Santat argues that releasing that information is not really a good idea. No one knows how the Academy Awards or Grammys get picked so really, what’s the big deal? I’ll link to those articles in the show notes - they’re worth reading and might offer a good debate topic to your students, and I think the ALA is considering a change to that policy.  So that’s something to keep an eye out for. And - if you want to know more about the how the Newbery Award works, there are a lot of great resources I’ll share on the website. A special shout out to Heavy Metal - the Mock Newbery Blog run by two former committee members. Excellent resource - definitely check it out!   So - I want to know what you all think!  Do you think the Newbery award books are unappealing to kids? Do they read them? Do you think the Newbery selection process is TOO secretive? Let me know what you think! You can send me an email at booksbetween@gmail.com or tag me on Twitter or Instagram with the handle @Books_Between.   Book Talk - Two Heart-Racing Adventures In this part of the show, I share with you a couple books centered around a theme and discuss three things to love about each book. This week we have two adventure stories that will get your pulse going! They are each very different - one is a more of a traditional action/adventure survival story and the other is a fairy tale fantasy adventure. But - despite their differences, they do have a surprising amount in common, which is why I thought they would make a good pairing today. Both include characters hidden away in towers, folded paper birds, and secret libraries.  Have you guessed yet? They are: Scar Island by Dan Gemeinhart and The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill!   Scar Island   Let’s start with Scar Island. I was already a big fan of Dan Gemeinhart - in fact The Honest Truth was one of the very first books I ever featured on the podcast back in episode 2, so I was really, really looking forward to Scar Island. This is a new release and just out this month. It’s about a kid named Jonathan who we meet as he is on a tiny boat being delivered to this impenetrable fortress on an island called Slabhenge Reformatory School for Troubled Boys. It’s basically Alcatraz for kids and run by a nasty crew of guys lead by a cruel man called The Admiral. He makes each kid write these daily wonderful letters home to their parents hiding the fact that he is actually denying them food and worse. We also have this tough group of 15 misfit kids - all imprisoned on this island for their crimes. Then suddenly, something happens where all the adults are gone from the island and the kids are left on their own and have to figure out what to do. It’s about survival and freedom and redemption - and just so good. If that hasn’t already got you hooked on reading this book, here are three more things I loved about Dan Gemeinhart’s Scar Island:   Colin. He is this little pip of a kid who has a lisp and is an admitted kleptomaniac. That’s why he’s at Slabhenge Reformatory. But, when he steals some food, he gives it to Jonathan even though Colin is hungry himself. He’s also into origami and makes these little paper cranes that appear at important parts later on in the story. I just loved him. But - one little note about his lisp. I was conferencing with a student a couple days ago who was reading this book and he had a tiny bit of trouble reading aloud and interpreting Colin’s dialogue, so I had to talk about how the “th” is replacing his “s” and model a bit what that sounded like. So just a heads up about that. The Library. This is verging on giving away too much, but I’ll say that during one of the character’s journeys through the labyrinth of corridors in this stone fortress, we discover a library and there’s a character who surprises us and knows the exact right book to recommend.   The buildup of suspense. There are these five threads that run through this story creating this tension as you read it. One - the weather. What starts off as a bad storm becomes this hurricane that threatens everything on the island. Two - the rats. Eventually you discover that there’s more going on with the rats than meets the eye. Three - the key. At a critical point, one of the characters ends up with the key to the Admiral’s office which contains lots of chocolate, alcohol, and… all the boys records. So throughout the story we are wondering - who has the key now? And - what are they going to do with it? Four - the forbidden door hiding this monstrous, noisy… thing. Five - the suspense of figuring out why on earth Jonathon is on this island. What did he do?? We know he feels like he deserves to be there. And we get glimpses of his previous life in his letters home and we have scenes where the author almost reveals what happened, but then pulls back. So - the weather, the rats, the key, the door, what did he do? - argh! - this book has you turning those pages!   Scar Island is kind of like Lord of the Flies meets Holes with a twist of pirate in there. Already I have a waiting list for it in my class and I’m sure it’s going to be a favorite with your kids, too.   The Girl Who Drank the Moon   Our second featured book today is The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. This is also an adventure survival story but a fairy tale fantasy with powerful witches, a poetic swamp monster, and a seemingly small dragon. The start of this story takes place in a gloomy village along a bog called The Protectorate run by a group of unscrupulous men called The Council of Elders. Each year, on the Day of Sacrifice, these elders take the youngest baby in the village and leave it in the woods. They do this, they claim, to appease an evil witch. Well, it turns out that there is actually a witch, a kind witch named Xan, who rescues these poor babies and feeds them on starlight while she journeys across the dangerous volcanic mountain to find a new home for them. Except one year, she accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight and enmagicks the child who grows to be uncontrollably powerful. The rest of the story is about Xan’s attempts to help her adoptive granddaughter harness that power, and what happens to the villagers left behind in The Protectorate - including a young Elder-in-Training named Antain who starts to have doubts, and the girl’s mother who ends up going mad and being locked in a tower with secrets of its own. It is beautiful and powerful. And here are three more things I loved about Kelly Barnhill’s The Girl Who Drank the Moon:   The magic. This is not your typical sparkly, wand summoned magic. It’s earthy and primal and often exists as something almost separate from the characters. Flowers spring from footsteps. And there is a flock of paper birds that swarm and cut and lead and protect in a way that is both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. I loved how unique the magic in this book was. The love you feel for the characters. Somehow Barnhill has written them in a way where you feel this deep sense of warmth and protectiveness and empathy for them. Xan, the witch, is getting older and she desperately wants to impart all of her knowledge that she can to her granddaughter, who she’s named Luna. But that same spell that protects her makes it so that she can’t get through to her. And you keep hoping that Luna will discover who she is and maybe be reunited with the mother she was so brutally ripped away from. And all the people in the village - especially Antain and his wife - who are under the thumb of the Council of Elders. I just felt so much love for this characters. What this story has to say about truth and power. In this book, there are some who feed off of other people’s misery. Those who raise themselves by putting others below them, by controlling what stories get told, and by spinning lies. But - there comes a time when the people start to realize how much power they actually have when they band together to use it. Loved it.   The Girl Who Drank the Moon  is lush and quirky and whimsical and funny and full of adventure. And I can’t wait to read everything else Kelly Barnhill has ever written because this was one powerhouse of a book. Q & A Our final segment this week is Question & Answer time.   Question: Well - the big question being asked right now - “Who do you think is going to get a Newbery this year?”   Answer: I’m a little reluctant to answer because inevitably, I am going to be wrong. But … I can tell you who others think are some top 2016 contenders, and I’ll venture to make a prediction or two.   So, one place I go to get a feel for some of the books getting Newbery buzz is the Mock Newbery Group on Goodreads. They read a book a month and then vote in January. What’s cool there is that you can see the discussions going all the way back to 2012 and take a peek at the reactions to the real winners. That’s enlightening. This year their second round list includes, in order,: Wolf Hollow, Ghost, The Inquisitor’s Tale, The Wild Robot, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Some Kind of Courage, and Pax.     Over at the Heavy Medal Blog, they have analyzed “Best of” lists on other sites to put together a “Best Books” post naming and ranking the contenders with the most mentions. So, some of the top books there that I haven’t mentioned already are: Some Writer: The Story of E.B. White, The Best Man, March, Book 3, Ms. Bixby’s Last Day, Raymie Nightingale, Samurai Rising, The Lie Tree, and School’s First Day of School.   And now, a few predictions from me: I think there will be a lot of honor books this year. I’m saying at least 4. I don’t think they are going to give the award to a picture book this year. Not that I disagreed with the decision last year, but I have a feeling it will go to a book with an older audience. I think you’ll see a shiny seal on at least a couple of these books: Wolf Hollow, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, The Wild Robot, Pax, and… I almost don’t want to admit this to you because it sounds silly, but I dreamt I was watching the live streaming of the awards and the winner was - The Inquisitor’s Tale! So maybe something’s going on in my subconscious! Or not! We’ll see in a few days!   Closing   Alright, that’s it for the Q&A section this week. If you have a question about how to connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love or an idea about a topic we should cover, I really would love to hear from you. On this episode, we invite on amateur Mycologist Cody Noconi to discuss the history of entheogen use in the human race. Much of the information has been well substantiated by multiple historians and Cody has merely compiled it and brought it to the listening audience. We cover human history from the Fertile Crescent all the way to the enlightenment period, maybe we’ve been stoners for longer than historians think. Once we get into Hermeticism and Alchemy, the connections to entheogen use starts to become very powerful, to the point we can’t ignore its influence. In this episode, Diane covers some questions that have been sent into the Balanced Living for Busy Professionals podcast over the last year. These are things she regularly gets asked about food, lifestyle, balance and keeping healthy. This is the last episode for 2016 as the show is taking a break from October – December and will return in a new bi-monthly format with some amazing and informative new guests and solo episodes in January 2017. In the mean time Diane will be re-releasing some of the most popular shows from the last year. Diane explores the most important factors for self care, uses some personal experience to talk about quietening that inner voice and explains exactly what a plant based diet is and how to travel and negotiate a busy life on this plan. What you will learn: Don’t think about work life balance as something separate; it should become your whole life. Take 10 minutes, 3 times a day to go for a walk. Find a quiet empty meeting room at work and spend 10 minutes meditating. Notice how long you spend each day on your phone or gadgets. Set priorities for when you will reply to emails during the day. Stop replying to emails at night. Finish work when you get home and instil an after work ritual to help you unwind. Getting control of your life means to have to remove yourself from the “do-all” position. Take the words willpower and discipline out of your vocabulary. Decide what’s important to you and set priorities. Processed food is full of sugar that will keep you addicted. Choose foods that support you. Stop watching food commercials that encourage you to eat and eat. You can get enough protein on a plant-based diet. Use the following websites to get great plant based recipes; plantpurenation.com, foroverknives.com. onegreenplanet.com Veestro is a great delivery service for people who don’t like to cook and all the food is GMO free. Quotes:  "You need courage to set boundaries in your life." "It's in your mind, just let it pass." "I am where I am in my journey." Collecting DustThis year completes my thirteenth year of teaching. In my thirteen years I have found that there are very few teachers that actually utilize technology in their classrooms. I have seen the fear that some teachers have when it comes to technology. When my school district changed from the hand written grade book to software that did most of the work for us, you would have thought the world was coming to an end. The countless number of teachers that moaned and groaned because they liked the old way better and never gave the program a chance to show them what it could do. Today, I see teachers with SMART Boards that never are used, document cameras sitting without being turned on, student computers collecting dust and it is very sad in my opinion.  As I walk from class to class, wracking my brain, and search the web for information on why this is, I find the reason to be that teachers are not trained correctly or enough and their resistance to learning something new.  There are a lot of administrators and teachers that are set in their ways and do not want to make room for new things in their offices/classrooms/lives.  Marc Prensky stated when a new technology appears, our first instinct is always to continue doing things within the technology the way we’ve always done it. That is almost exclusively what we now do with educational technology. We use it mostly to pass documents around, but now in electric form, and the result is not very different from what we have always known (Prensky, 2005).  People just don’t want to change but by learning something new, the challenges/duties we have in our day to day lives as teachers would be so much easier to take care of.  Jamie McKenziestated in 2001 that the evidence mounts that few American teachers feel adequately prepared for the challenge of using new technologies in any fashion, not to mention the challenge of using technologies to support curriculum rich, standards-based lessons (McKenzie, 2001).  Part of this is brought on by the teacher also and not by the training at hand.  I have found, when I do technology training at my school, that most teachers do not even pay attention to what is going on in the training.  They are surfing the web, talking to their neighbors, or just plain zoned out.  We often see this in our students and get upset with them for not paying attention, but then do it ourselves when it is our turn to learn.  Then when it is time for do the task that the training was over, they cannot recall how to go about it.  I believe that if there is provided training that walks teachers through the process of using the software, hardware, website, whatever it is, step-by-step and the teacher has to follow along, then they will understand it better and be more apt to using it in the future. It is the teacher’s responsibility to take control of the situation and move forward.  With that being said, I believe that if they are provided with a training that is hands on then that will provide the first opportunity to them to use and explore the technology that is in front of them.  It will give them time to get used to it and ask questions if they have it.  If they are unsure about something, most teachers will go back to their classrooms, put the information on a shelf, and never pull it out again because they feel intimidated by it.  If they are given the proper training, then more are likely to use it in the future.  Another issue stated by Sam Carlson, is teacher motivation to participate in professional development workshops in the use of technology. While so-called “champion teachers” will request and seek out professional development opportunities in the use of technology, the vast majority of teachers will not (Carlson, 2002).  I truly believe this.  Most teachers run in the opposite direction when it comes to technology.  If they were made aware of the training being hands on and giving them time to manipulate the hardware/software, maybe they would be more likely to sign up.  As Instructional Technologists, we must provide training and experiences with technology that is student (teachers) friendly and gives them the security that they need in order to go back to their classrooms and use what they have or more.  We have to remember that not everyone is technology savvy and that things must be taught at the learner’s level and in their style of learning, just like our students in the classroom.  If we can do this and provide positive feedback and help, I believe that more teachers would feel more comfortable with technology and use it more in their classrooms to provide a learning environment for all their students.  ReferencesCarlson, S. With next week's regular Between The Sheets being lighter than usual (albeit long by normal human podcast standards) and it being about six months months since we last did this, we decided that now is a great time to give everyone another peek at the kind of shows we do on Patreon!
