With next week's regular Between The Sheets being lighter than usual (albeit long by normal human podcast standards) and it being about six months months since we last did this, we decided that now is a great time to give everyone another peek at the kind of shows we do on Patreon! This time out, thanks in part to the suggestion of Joe Sposto, we flash back to the show we did looking at Sid Eudy's transformation from Sid Vicious to Sid Justice in 1991-1992, going from his very unconventional WCW departure to the unceremonious end of his first WWF run. For dozens more deep dives like this, including the ongoing ECW on TNN series, all you need to do is sign up for our Patreon at just the $5/month level or higher by going to *Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets* ( http://www.patreon.com/betweenthesheets ) *.* *----------* We're back to look at (approximately) a year in the life of Sid Eudy, going from his bizarre WCW departure in Spring 1991 through his similarly bizarre WWF departure in Spring 1992. Kris and David look at the back and forth drama of Sid leading WCW on about re-signing, audio of Jim Herd answering questions from the big three newsletter writers about letting Sid out of his contract early, Sid being grossly underpaid for his role in the SummerSlam '91 main event, both the WWF and WCW's complete inability to book Sid properly, softball season and the effect it had on Sid's wrestling schedule, why Sid Justice starting as a babyface was a mistake, just how easy it would be to book Sid better, how Hulk Hogan's probably responsible for the times he was booked like an asshole, WWE retconning the original Royal Rumble '92 commentary, whether or not you can actually put urine in a Visine bottle, and MUCH more. This show is definitely not BOGUS. With the coronavirus-induced nationwide lockdown having deeply impacted the economy, India’s GDP contracted 23.9 per cent in the April-June quarter of 2020-21 compared to the same quarter last financial year, showed official data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Monday. Well, the pandemic has weakened the already declining consumer demand and private investment. These figures reveal the pain the economy had to undergo as Covid-19 brought all activity to a standstill during the quarter. Why is the GDP number important? GDP is a key indicator of overall economic activity. A sharp fall in growth means slowing business activity, rising unemployment and, consequently, greater stress on the banking sector. The GDP figures are keenly watched every quarter for cues on broader economic performance. This is the first instance of an economic contraction for the country in at least four decades, and also the first GDP decline since India began publishing quarterly numbers in 1996. In the January-March quarter of this year, the economy had grown by 3.1 per cent year-on-year — the lowest rate in over 17 years — and by 5.2 per cent in the June quarter of 2019-20. The rate of India's GDP growth had declined from 6.1 per cent in FY19 to 4.2 per cent in FY20, the slowest in 11 years. Meanwhile, After an initial burst on Monday morning that took the S&P BSE Sensex to the day’s high of 40,010.17, the markets lost ground as trade progressed. The S&P BSE Sensex lost over 1,614 points from the day's high and hit a low of 38,395.89 levels. It, however, recouped some of the loss and closed 839 points, or 2.1 per cent, lower at 38,628 levels. Supported by buying in FMCG, pharma, and auto counters, the domestic equity market ended in the positive territory on Friday, ahead of the release of GDP data for January-March quarter of 2019-20 (Q4FY20). The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex recovered a good 600 points from day's low to settle at 32,424.10, up 223.15 points or 0.7 per cent. ONGC (up 5.5 per cent) was the the top gainer on the index while IT major Infosys (down 2 per cent) ended as the biggest loser. NSE's Nifty settled at 9,580, up 90 points or 1 per cent, with 36 of 50 constituents advancing and 14 declining. On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 5.7 per cent and the Nifty added 6 per cent. Broader market, too, participated in the rally. The Nifty Midcap 100 index gained over 1 per cent to 13,273 and the Nifty SmallCap 100 index rose nearly a per cent to 4,002.80. Among individual stocks, Vodafone Idea rallied 35 per cent to Rs 7.85 in the intra-day deals on the BSE, after reports said that the global technology giant Google is in talks to buy a 5 per cent stake in the company, owned by Vodafone Plc of the UK and Aditya Birla Group. The stock, however, pared gains and ended around 13 per cent higher at Rs 6.56 after the company clarified on the report, saying there is no proposal as reported by the media that is being considered at the Board. IT services firm Wipro surged 6.65 per cent to Rs 212.55 after the company named Thierry Delaporte as the new chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director (MD) of the company, replacing Abidali Neemuchwala. Delaporte was most recently the chief operating officer of French consulting and technology firm Capgemini Group. The Indian markets is likely to begin the June series with a gap-down, as indicated by the SGX Nifty, which slipped over 70 points after weakness in other global markets amid escalating US-China tensions. Wall Street ended lower on Thursday after President Donald Trump said he would hold a news conference on China on Friday. The Dow Jones fell 0.58 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 0.2 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.46 per cent. Meanwhile, the US economy shrank fell at an annual rate of 5 per cent in the first quarter, a bigger decline than the 4.8 per cent drop first estimated a month ago. Asian shares also dipped in early trade. South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei both slipped 0.7 per cent while Australia's ASX200 was down 1.1 per cent. All eyes are now Trump's press conference where he will address his response to China after Beijing proceeded with a national security law for Hong Kong that critics fear would erode the city’s freedoms. Oil prices gave up some of their gains overnight. Brent was last down 1.47 per cent at $34.77 a barrel. Moreover, the expectation of a somber GDP data for January-March quarter will also keep sentiment in check. The numbers, which are likely to come in post-market hours, are expected to show growth contracting with some analysts penciling in a 5 per cent dip. Data released by the government yesterday showed that FDI in 2019-20 grew by 14 per cent, a four-year high, to a record $49.8 billion. Meanwhile, India saw another record daily jump in coronavirus cases, taking the tally to over 1.65 lakh with more than 4,600 deaths. Investors will also keep track of any news regarding the lockdown, which is to end on May 31. Any further extension is likely to be taken negatively by the stock market. According to sources, the government is considering additional policy measures for NBFCs, and regulatory changes to ensure the stability of the financial system. This comes after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with the country’s top regulators on Thursday. Further, the on-going earning season would induce stock-specific moves. TVS Motor yesterday reported a decline of 47.13 per cent in profit before tax at Rs 115 crore for the March quarter while total income declined 16.9 per cent YoY to Rs 4,129 crore. Today, a total of 31 companies including Voltas, Jubilant Life Sciences, and Metropolis Healthcare, are scheduled to announce their March quarter results. Vodafone Idea will be in focus today after The Financial Times reported that Google is in talks to buy a 5 per cent stake in the company. In another development, sources have told Business Standard that Abu Dhabi state fund Mubadala Investment Company is in talks to invest about $1 billion in Reliance Industries' digital unit Jio platforms. Besides, today is the final trading day for Reliance Industries' Rights Entitlement. Read by Kanishka Gupta
Shedding all its morning gains, the domestic equity market ended in the negative territory on Tuesday amid sell-off in IT stocks and telecom major Bharti Airtel. The S&P BSE Sensex slipped 477 points from day's high to settle at 30,609.30, down 63 points or 0.21 per cent. The Philippines economy contracted for the first time in more than two decades during the first quarter, but officials warned Thursday that the worst was likely yet to come as the nation reels from the coronavirus pandemic. Gross domestic product shrank 0.2 percent in January-March, its worst performance since 1998 during the Asian financial crisis as the Philippines joins a long line of countries to report devastating figures as a result of widespread lockdowns that have shut down economies. The January eruption of the Taal volcano, which forced the temporary closure of Manila’s main international airport, also took a toll. Economic Planning Acting Secretary Karl Chua said there would be more pain and the economy could further shrink in the second quarter. --- This episode is sponsored by · Afrolit Podcast: Hosted by Ekua PM, Afrolit shares the stories of multi-faceted Africans one episode at a time. https://open.spotify.com/show/2nJxiiYRyfMQlDEXXpzlZS?si=mmgODX3NQ-yfQvR0JRH-WA Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support
Thousands of migrant workers are left stranded at the borders across the country due to coronavirus lockdown, even on a day which is observed every year to pay tribute to the contribution of workers across the world. Yes, it's May Day or International Workers' Day. Here's a look at the status of thousands of migrant workers amid the global pandemic and also the measures announced for their welfare. Let’s begin with some good news . Indian Railways flagged its first special train to ferry 1,200 stranded migrants from Lingampally in Telangana to Hatia in Jharkhand. "The 24 coach train started at 4.50 am today (Friday)," RPF DG Arun Kumar told PTI. It's the only train to be deployed so far, he added. Incidentally Friday is also the international Labour Day. The global tally of Covid-19 patients has so far crossed the 3 million-mark. However, meeting the constant demand of testing kits and other medical equipment seems to be difficult, at least in the near future. No doubt, the labourers/ migrant workers seem to be among those most affected. Here's a report released on Wednesday, in which the International Labour Organization estimated a 4.5 per cent drop in working hours (about 130 million full-time jobs) across the globe in January-March 2020, compared to the previous quarter. However, the worst is yet to come in the second quarter in which a 10.5 per cent slump is expected in working hours, equaling 305 million jobs, compared to October-December 2019. Speaking of India, despite an extensive lockdown of over a month, the country’s tally of cases is increasing and it has reported more than 35,000 cases so far. There are even talks about an extension of the lockdown which has already caused turbulence in the lives of thousands of the workers. A Business Standard correspondent went to a relief camp in Sarai Kale Khan and spoke to some migrant workers. Before this we did come across news of migrant workers, first thronging the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border and then flooding Bandra station in Mumbai, in an attempt to reach their homes in far-flung areas, notwithstanding the lockdown rules. No doubt, the centre government has created relief camps for them, and provides them with food and shelter but apart from this nothing major seems to have come in picture which could help them cope with the situation. On Thursday, the Union home ministry made it clear that no separate passes are required for inter-state movement of trucks — those carrying goods or returning after delivery — during the ongoing lockdown and licence of the driver is enough. This means, all the stranded drivers at the borders could now move with a little ease. In one of our recent podcasts, Stranded migrants, students can now go home, but process is not that easy! we did talk about how people can now travel back to their home towns according to the new guidelines. But since, the government has permitted only the roadways, except the special train we talked about, to carry out the transportation process, state governments are citing logistical challenges in transporting thousands of people by road especially in the summer heat. They said both arranging buses in a large number and ensuring the norms of social distancing during the long travel is quite difficult. That apart, for the first time in around one-and-a-half centuries, Indian workers will have to work for 72 hours in a week (up from 48 hours a week) as five states — Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab — have amended the Factories Act of 1948 through executive orders to effect this change. However, these states have mentioned that the move is temporary in order to boost the production at factories and mines which has otherwise been affected due to the nationwide lockdown in view of the pandemic.

Most CEO’s read on average 4-5 books a MONTH. The average American reads .11 hours a day. That’s less than 7 minutes folks!! Let’s break it down. If a book takes on average 4 hours to finish, and CEO’s read 4 of them. That’s 16 hours a month. Meaning they’re out reading the average joe 13 hours minimum. If you want to live an extraordinary life, it requires extraordinary action. CEO’s reading habits demonstrate this. So if you want to get ahead, and do so quickly, adopting a reading habit is a great place to start. I myself am an avid reader. I read 2-3 on a good month. The domestic equity market ended Monday's choppy session on a flat note as market participants chose to stay on the sidelines in the absence of any clear signs with respect to Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in India. Moreover, a crash in crude oil prices and weak global markets also dented investor sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex ended 59 points or 0.19 per cent higher at 31,648 levels, with HDFC Bank (up around 4 per cent) being the top gainer, followed by Infosys (up 3.75 per cent) and Sun Pharma (up 3.6 per cent). READ MORE Global markets Caution recaptured world markets on Monday as another drubbing for US crude oil futures kicked off a week of data and earnings that will drive home the damage being inflicted by global coronavirus lockdowns. European stocks made a choppy start, with the pan-regional swinging in and out of positive territory in early trading. London's FTSE and Germany's DAX were up 0.2 per cent. In commodity markets, oil prices fell, depressed by concerns US storage facilities will soon be full as the novel coronavirus pandemic destroys demand and as companies prepare to report their worst quarterly earnings since the 2008 financial crisis. Brent was down 73 cents, or 2.6 per cent, to $27.35 a barrel at the time of writing of this report. The front-month May WTI contract fell $3.53, or 19.3 per cent, to $14.74 a barrel.
The benchmark indices pared gains but still managed to settle in the positive territory on Thursday amid buying in financial stocks such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, HDFC, and SBI. The S&P BSE Sensex gained 223 points or 0.73 per cent to end at 30,602.61 while NSE's benchmark index Nifty settled just shy of 9,000 level - at 8,992.80, up 67.5 points or 0.76 per cent. During the day, however, the index reclaimed the crucial level. Volatility index, India VIX, declined 7.65 per cent to 45.9275 levels. In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap gained 1.42 per cent to end at 11,578.31, thus outperforming the benchmark indices. The S&P BSE SmallCap index rose 1.71 per cent to 10,543.65 levels. Sectorally, barring Nifty IT and Nifty FMCG, all the sectoral indices on the NSE ended in the green. IT stocks tumbled after Wipro posted muted numbers for the quarter ended March 31, 2020. Shares of Biocon jumped 5 per cent to Rs 353 on the BSE after the company’s biologics manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru received the Establishment Inspection Report (EIR) from the US health regulator. It ended the day at Rs 349.85, up nearly 4 per cent. Shares of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) continued their northward march for the seventh straight day, up 4.5 per cent at Rs 920 on the BSE after the company said its heavy engineering arm has won ‘significant’ contracts in the January-March quarter (Q4FY20). Global Markets Europe led world stock markets back to higher ground on Thursday as tentative moves to reopen parts of the some of its larger coronavirus-hit economies offset some truly stinking global economic numbers. The International Monetary Fund is predicting zero growth in Asia this year for the first time in 60 years, as exporters are pounded by slumping demand and anti-virus measures force consumers to stay home and shops to shut down. Benchmark indexes in Australia, Hong Kong and Shanghai also posted falls between 0.4% and 1.3% and some emerging markets fell harder. In the commodity market, oil prices were broadly stable on Thursday after sharp losses in the previous session, with investors hoping that a big build-up in US inventories may mean producers have little option but to deepen output cuts as the coronavirus pandemic ravages demand. Brent crude was down 19 cents, or 0.7 per cent, at $27.50 a barrel while WTI was up 7 cents, or 0.4 per cent, at $19.94.

The Indian benchmark indices ended on a positive note yesterday. The Sensex rose 1,028 points to 29,468 while Nifty50 closed 317 points higher at 8,598. However, going by the early trends in the SGX Nifty, the Indian markets may open with a cut of nearly 1 per cent today. This is in line with the trends in the global markets. Shares on Wall Street tumbled on Tuesday, after the United States marked 700 deaths in a single day from COVID-19 for the first time on Tuesday. The Dow Jones fell 1.8 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 1.6 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite dropped nearly 1 per cent. Asian shares were mixed on Wednesday. Here's a look at the major news and developments: The Centre will borrow Rs 4.88 trillion, or 62.56 per cent of the 2020-21 gross borrowing target of Rs 7.8 trillion, in April-September, the government and the Reserve Bank of India said on Tuesday. The government has sharply cut interest rates on small savings scheme by up to 1.4 percentage points for the first quarter of FY21 to facilitate banks to lower their rates. Interest rates on one, two and three-year time deposits have been reduced to 5.5 percent each from 6.9 percent in the January-March quarter. NSE has revised the market lot size of Nifty Bank to 25 from the current 20. This will be applicable from July 2020 contract. The number of coronavirus infections globally headed toward 800,000. The Fed is now allowing foreign central banks to exchange their holdings of U.S. Treasury securities for overnight dollar loans. Starting today, automobile companies will starting releasing sales numbers for March. According to a Business Standard report, these auto sales for the month could see a 50 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in volumes, given the lockdown and decline in footfall during the second half of the month. Moreover, the merger of 10 public sector banks into 4 comes into effect from today. Following this merger, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India will be merged into Punjab National Bank (PNB); Syndicate Bank into Canara Bank; Allahabad Bank into Indian Bank; and Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank into Union Bank of India. And, in the end, a reminder, that the equity markets will remain closed tomorrow for 'Ram Navami'. Read by: Kanishka Gupta
Politicians prefer solving immediate problems for which they can claim credit now. But statesmen also consider approaching problems that cannot yet be seen but whose approaching footsteps can be heard. The virus is making a relatively small number of people sick. Economic depression will actually kill many more. Even unemployment lowers the lifespan significantly. Science is outstanding at explaining what things do and why they do it. It is appallingly bad at explaining what individual people do and why we do them. But a crowd of people acting in unison, say a crowd watching an exciting football game, a crowd gathered for revolution, a crowd subscribed to a certain ideology or theology, well its behavior is quite easy to predict. For it is not an individual person or even a lot of individual people. No, it is a ‘thing’. A sort of huge animal with countless heads and legs but on an animal nonetheless. It is predictable and often frightening. Perspective: January-March 2020: >9,000 suicides, >8,000 road accident fatalities, >15,000 flu deaths (2017-2018 season) Total American deaths during 1Q2020 >700,000. The rapid spread of coronavirus has jolted the global economy. But this is no routine jolt and this time it appears the global economy is headed for something similar to what we experienced in 2001 and 2008 - a global recession. Analysts fear that the impact this time would be deeper than that of the 8-month long economic downturn in 2001 and the one in early 1990s Here's what top brokerages say about global recession: Just a day after US President Donald Trump conceded the US slump alone is set to be “a bad one,” economists declared global recession for the first time since the financial crisis. Morgan Stanley’s team, led by Chetan Ahya, said a worldwide recession is now its “base case,” with growth expected to fall to 0.9 per cent this year. Here’s what she said in a report, co-authored with Derrick Y Kam, Nora Wassermann and Frank Zhao. “Assuming this outlook of Covid-19, we expect 2020 global growth to dip to 0.9 per cent, the lowest since the global financial crisis (GFC). The global recession this year would be deeper than in 2001. We expect global growth to contract by 0.3 per cent in the first quarter (January – March) of 2020 (Q1-20) and 0.6 per cent in 2Q20.” Meanwhile, credit rating agency S&P Global believes that the initial data from China suggests a deeper cut in the economy than projected, though a tentative stabilisation has begun. Following China, Europe and the US are increasing restrictions on person-to-person contacts presaging a demand collapse which will take activity sharply lower in the second quarter before a recovery begins later in the year. They are expecting that growth would range between 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent. But at Goldman, the prediction is 1.25 per cent. While such a slump would be less jolting than the 0.8 per cent contraction of 2009, as measured by the International Monetary Fund, it would be worse than the downturns of 2001 and the early 1990s. Both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs anticipate a rebound in the second half, but warn that there is risk of even greater economic pain. The projections will put further pressure on policy makers to do more to limit the health emergency and to deliver stimuli that help companies and consumers through the shock and then drive a rebound in demand afterward. During his four-decade career, Dr. Taff has investigated more than 4,500 cases of ghosts, hauntings, poltergeists and conducted extensive studies in telepathy and precognition, eventually developing the initial protocols and methodologies for what was later termed “remote viewing”. He also, was himself, investigated as a psychic subject, the results of which were published in Behavioral Neuropsychiatry, “A Laboratory Investigation of Telepathy: The Study of A Psychic”, Vol. 6, Nos. 1-12, April-December 1974-January-March, 1975. One of the cases Dr. Taff investigated in 1974 gained international fame as the book and motion picture, The Entity, starring Barbara Hershey and Ron Silver, released by Fox in 1983. Dr. Taff served as technical advisor on The Entity as well as being represented in the film by the character “Gene Kraft”. What’s unknown by the media is the fact that, in real life, The Entity followed its female victim for quite some time after our initial investigation, continuing its vociferous nature. Allegedly, Doris Bither died in 1999 of cardiopulmonary failure at the age of 58. He has consulted for government, business, and law enforcement, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), National Security Agency (NSA), Defense Language Institute (DLI), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the FBI, Interpol, LAPD, California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department, and the Westminster Police Department. He has served as a technical advisor or script doctor on the films Logan’s Run, Demon Seed, Altered States, Poltergeist, and The Entity. Dr. Taff has written numerous articles for magazines and journals, and has been featured in many books on paranormal subjects ranging from precognition to UFOs. At the turn of the 20th century, a rogue tiger terrorized the villages of Nepal and northern India. By the time British hunter Jim Corbett was called in, it had killed 434 people. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Corbett's pursuit of the elusive cat, and his enlightened efforts to address the source of the problem. We'll also revisit a Confederate spy and puzzle over a bloody ship. Intro: Ralph Beaman devised a sentence that ends with 15 prepositions. India’s annual growth in gross domestic product in the July-September quarter of FY20 declined to 4.5%, compared with 7.1 per cent in the same quarter last year, government data showed on Friday. This was the lowest level for GDP growth since of January-March quarter of FY13. The low rate of expansion was mainly on account of a weak manufacturing, subdued farm sector activity, and a drop in exports due to a global slowdown. According to the data released by the National Statistics Office, growth in gross value added, or GVA, in the manufacturing sector contracted by 1 per cent in the September quarter, compared with an expansion of 6.9 per cent last year. Similarly, farm sector GVA growth remained subdued at 2.1 per cent, down from 4.9 per cent in the year-ago period. What’s more? Output of eight core infrastructure industries contracted by 5.8 per cent in October, indicating the severity of the economic slowdown, showed another set of data released on Friday. The rate of contraction in October was higher than the 5.2 per cent seen the previous month. Among the eight core industries, coal production fell steeply by 17.6 per cent, crude oil by 5.1 per cent, and natural gas by 5.7 per cent, and electricity by 12.4 per cent. The only sector that posted growth in October was fertilisers, where production increased by 11.8 per cent year-on-year. Growth in output of refinery products slowed down to 0.4 per cent in October, against 1.3 per cent in the same period last year. The eight core sectors had expanded by 4.8 per cent in October 2018. Talking of GDP, the decline in rate of expansion in the September quarter was in line with economists’ expectations. The economists Business Standard had spoken to earlier had concurred that Q2 GDP growth would be between 4.2 per cent and 4.7 per cent, slower than the 5 per cent in Q1. In another sign of pain in the economy, official data released on Friday also showed that... To know more, listen to the podcast

In 1930 Harold Lasseter claimed he'd discovered an enormous deposit of gold in the remote interior of Australia, and a small group of men set off into the punishing desert in search of a fortune estimated at 66 million pounds. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of Lasseter's reef, one of the most enduring legends of the Australian outback. We'll also reconsider the mortality rates of presidents and puzzle over an unlocked door. Intro: Where is pain? In a sense, Lasseter has never ceased his search -- above his grave in an Alice Springs cemetery is a statue perpetually assaying the desert sands. It bears an inscription by Theodore Roosevelt: It is not the critic who counts, or how the strong man stumbled and fell or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotion and spends himself in a worthy cause. If he fails, he fails by daring greatly, So that he will never be one of those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory or defeat. It's a return to the regular coverage of The 'Nam with the first of a three-part storyline that takes us back to the Tet Offensive of 1968, "The Beginning of the End." I'll take a look at issue #79 of the series and will also finish up the two-part Punisher/Iceman storyline from Punisher War Journal by looking at issue #53 of that comic. In this episode we discuss some basic body weight strength training moves and how to implement them alongside your running program. Meanwhile, Lisa puts Brian under pressure by running a well-paced 11:12 for the 3k as part of the first leg of their January - March 5k challenge. Lisa moved from last to 5th during the race in a field of 15 runners, demonstrating that pacing strategy is equally important on the track as it is in the marathon. Our 2018 Year in Review for sports from the First Quarter of the year (January-March) for McPherson High sports and other area teams.
Jeri Prochaska and Tom Netting of CSPEN, the Central States Private Education Network, represent higher ed institutions nationwide to public policymakers in Washington and throughout the nation. CSPEN is focused on making sure that the education industry has all the information that’s coming out of Washington. They believe communication is the key, thus allowing the industry to advocate for itself. Here’s their latest from what is going on in Washington. Legislative Gridlock Over the HEA Results in Regulatory Guidance. In the absence of action from both houses of Congress, we are seeing the Trump administration pushing through political agendas through as regulation in lieu of statutory guidance, and they have been massive. This is no more evident than in the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. Under the law in 1955 reauthorization of the Higher Education Act is supposed to be reauthorized process to bring it up to current day every 5-6 years, but this latest renewal did not get as far as it should have. The House completed mark up but did not bring a bill to the floor, and the Senate didn’t get that far despite having multiple hearings. Given the legislative stalemate and partisanship in Congress, the HEA is not expected to come to a vote until 2019 or 2020. Negotiated Rulemaking. Negotiated rulemaking is the process by which the Department has individuals from higher education and interested communities come together to discuss proposed changes to regulations. The negotiated rulemaking process for the borrower defense to repayment regulations, gainful employment regulations, and others areas have been going on, but the proposed rules have not yet come out. The next round of negotiated rulemaking will take place in January – March 2019, focusing on “accreditation and innovation,” with subgroups focusing on online education, definition of credit hour, direct assessment, competency-based learning, and how all of those are delivered and how federal financial aid might be utilized in the delivery of all those different modalities. That process will conclude with the development of regulations that are proposed, probably mid-summer 2019 and published in final form by November 2019 with them going into effect July 1, 2020. To find out more, go to the Department of Education website. The deadline for application to participate is Nov 15. Borrower Defense to Repaying (BDR). Many of the regulations including the borrower defense to repaying regulations and gainful employment, that were put in place by the Obama administration are being contemplated for revision or repeal by the Trump administration. In instituting the borrower defense to repaying, the Obama administration took the fundamental premise that if a student was defrauded because of a school employing illegal or deceptive practices that encouraged them to take out student loans to attend that school, their student loan should be forgiven. The Trump administration challenged this, but the courts have ordered the administration to continue with this process until new regulations are put in place. Because of the timeframe, this will not happen until mid-2020. Of the 32,601 applications received by the end of June, only 96 borrowers have actually had their debt canceled. Ninety-nine percent of the applications that have been processed were denied. Two decisions were recently handed down by the courts along these lines. The first stated that student who didn't file an application is not eligible for relief, that only those who followed through on the opportunities afforded them by the Department can seek relief. Over 100,000 have done so. The second decision stated that regulatory stays and a repeal of the delay in the implementation of those regulations the Trump administration has put into place are no longer valid – it was deemed to be arbitrary and capricious – the result is that those regulations that were scheduled to take effect in 2016 actually went into effect on October 12. What we’re seeing is that the needed guidance in this transitional period is lacking, and the new administration needs to tell everyone how the regulations should be implemented while developing the new regulations that set asunder the interim guidance. Gainful Employment. Similar to the borrower defense to repayment and final rules that we had hoped would be published in final form by November 1, the BDR court cases indicated that the Department would not meet their November 1 deadline for either borrower defense or gainful employment. That means that regulations that have been in effect and gone through two iterations of review under the Obama administration (2009 and 2012/14), are in place and will remain so while new regulatory proposals that would eliminate the loss of eligibility under certain criteria will be potentially repealed. Those regulations will not go into effect until July 2020. There is some belief that under statutory authority and regulatory capability that the Secretary of Education might provide an opportunity for early implementation of some of the changes under the gainful employment rule, but we must wait and see what the Department publishes in their final regs which are likely to come out before the end of the year. Additionally, it is unknown whether schools will have the opportunity for early implementation and what that timeline might be as opposed to the normal implementation of July 2020. Credit Hour. The higher education community has been waiting for their turn in line with the Department to focus on issues related to changes made by the Obama administration on how to calculate the number of hours of outside preparatory time and other facets of what goes in the determination of a credit hour. This has a significant impact on federal financial aid and online education. This will be taken up in the next round of negotiated rulemaking. Bullet Points: Drill down on key points of the interview: Expect the Higher Education Act to be renewed in 2019 or 2020 The courts are stepping in on the Borrower Defense To Repayment in multiple ways, blocking changes until 2020. Negotiated rulemaking is proceeding slowly in the cases of BDR and Gainful Employment. Expect guidance to come out by the end of Nov 2018. A new round of negotiated rulemaking will begin in Jan 2019, focusing on accreditation and innovation, with subcommittees on online education, a definition of credit hour, direct assessment, competency-based learning, and how all of those are delivered and how federal financial aid might be utilized in the delivery of all those different modalities. Take the Free "Jumpstart Your Website Traffic" marketing mini-course at www.jumpstartyourwebsitetraffic.com Leave a Review! We’re nearing the end of a series of episodes of Pep Talks for Side Hustlers, I’m going to take you behind the scenes of my strategic planning process – so be sure that you’re subscribed so that you don’t miss a step! From setting big goals to getting into the weeds with data to planning out what I’m doing next and and when it’s going to happen, I’m going to break it all down for you, and share the insights I’ve uncovered along the way. In episode 155, I shared with you some key metrics that you’ll need to pull together so that you can figure out where to focus your time and money in the upcoming year, and a formula for figuring out what to focus on based on the numbers. In episode 156, we talked about how to survey our current email list to find out who is buying from us, who isn’t and what to do about it. Then in episode 157, I shared with how to figure out if what you’re spending your time and money on is actually worth your efforts. And in episode 158, we talked about a method of goal setting that I learned that led me to where I am right now and I walked you through how to do it in your side hustle. So if you’re not subscribed to the podcast, go ahead and do that now so that you don’t miss another episode, because today we’re going to talk about how to put these goals into an actual plan so that you really do them. And first, I’m going to recommend my business coach Vicki Fitch’s Rockstar Guide to Getting it Done, which I’ve linked up in the show notes – you can just scroll down on this episode to see them and then tap that link to head over to her site, or just go to VickiFitch.com/courses and you’ll see it. Some of the concepts I’m going to share with you today I learned from that guide, but there’s a whole entire planning process that goes into that if you implement it, you will be a machine and you’ll feel like you’re totally in control of life! Okay, so the first thing I want you to do is block three to four days on your calendar to walk through this planning process for next year. You’ll need one day to gather all the data and put together your customer survey like we talked about in 155 and 156, and then another day to review how you’re spending your time vs. your marketing goals and to actually brainstorm some goals and set your PUSH goal. You’ll need a third day to create this plan I’m going to share with you, and you might possibly need a 4th day for budgeting which I’ll talk about tomorrow, so be sure you’re subscribed. They don’t have to be consecutive days, but I’m a nerd like that so I like them to be. If you’re side hustling this might need to be two weekends, or a weekend day a month, or whatever. So give yourself enough time for this process, it’s important. After you’ve blocked the time this year, go ahead and block it on your calendar for next year. Yep, we’re not just planning, we’re planning ahead! Then, I want you to pick one day a quarter for planning the next quarter. So in October, I’m planning for January – March, and in January, I’m planning for April – June, and so on. And then, at the end of every month, pick a day to plan out the next month. This can overlap with those quarterly planning days. And then every week, pick the day that you’ll plan the next week. I do mine on Sundays. You’ve planned time to plan. That’s a huge first step that most people don’t do, and that’s straight out of the Rockstar Guide to Getting it Done which I highly, highly recommend. And I also know what my goals are thanks to the process I walked through yesterday, and I know exactly which one to focus on first thanks to my PUSH goal. So for me, the rest of this year will be best spent building a team to support my next goal which is to increase the number of Done For You clients that I book, and I want to do that starting in Q1 of 2019. And then you plan out when you want make all the things happen. Think about what’s going on in your life in certain months, when holidays typically fall, when people are typically taking vacations, when other people in your niche are doing big promotions, and work around that stuff, or at least be aware of it. This next step is key. What has to happen before that thing you’re doing to actually make it happen? Marketing, planning, hiring, creating. And just a note about marketing, this is a great time to make a content calendar. What content do you have to create to market the things that you’re doing and when those things need to roll out in advance of those launches and promotions. I go into this process for members of my Serious Side Hustlers in a live workshop, it’s too much to cover on the podcast. Put it on the calendar. Then look at it. Do you have time left over to actually do that thing you do in your business? Is there time for the day-to-day? For your day job? Is there time for LIFE? If you’re thinking “how can I fit this all in?” you might need to pare down the number of goals to accomplish, or decide what you’re going to stop doing in other parts of your life or business to make it happen. You might need to hire someone to help you. You’re going to have to make some tough decisions about what you really want. This is where the dreams become the reality. When you schedule the time for it on your calendar and commit to it. It’s no longer, “Well, I’d love to do this and this and this.” It’s I’m doing this, and here’s when, and here’s what I’m doing leading up to that to make it happen. And it’s strategic. It’s based on data. And it’s based on your WHY. There’s so, so many more ninja tricks to planning that you can learn inside of Vicki’s Rockstar Guide to getting it Done that I wish I could just tell them all to you but then that would be copyright infringement and I’m not all about that, so definitely check that out, it’s worth the investment in the amount of time you’ll save and the progress you’ll make. Okay so we have our plan… Now how are we gonna make it happen? Well, we need a budget. And that’s what we’re going to walk through tomorrow, so hit that subscribe button and I’ll see you right back here tomorrow.
Text ‘bulletproof’ to 345345 to stay in the know about our upcoming book release and the Bulletproof Summit on October 12-13th 2018 in Atlanta! Bulletproof Dental Practice Podcast Episode 65 Hosts: Dr. Peter Boulden & Dr. Craig Spodak Guest: Dr. Scott Leune, Founder & CEO of Breakaway Practice & Dental Whale Watch full video of the interview by clicking here! Key Takeaways: Most DSO’s don’t allow for the dentist to work with them to continue growing their business. Breakaway Practice provides DSO infrastructure to provide partnership and value for practice owners. Breakaway Practice wants to take the best from corporate infrastructure has today and make it available to a private dentist through a partnership. Traditional DSO’s are a great benefit for new grads who want guaranteed salary with a lot of CE and ability to move around the country. Practice sale strategy all depends on the specific wants and needs of the selling dentist. Most Breakaway dentists are entrepreneurs who want multiple locations. 7 out of 8 practices should not be purchased by someone who wants to own multiple locations. Invest in training, coaching, and learning if you’re interested in owning multiple locations. It’s a lot of hard work and isn’t for most people. To get a really high EBITDA multiple you must own lots of locations with a ton of infrastructure and a solid path to continue rapid growth. Leune has found there’s a tipping point at 11 days being booked out, profits start going down and no-shows start going up. Once you’re at that tipping point you have a problem and must fix whatever is holding back the schedule. January-March are the best months of the year for acquiring new patients, cost-wise. August is also good. Worst times for marketing are December, April-May, and September. Dentists need to strive for both clinical AND business excellency. Specialists are in the hardest position right now, as GP’s are taking over more and more of their business. If you’re doing what you love and making a good amount of money, perhaps there’s no reason to change or do anything different. Not everyone has to be the CEO. If you do what’s right for the patient, create a really good value-based practice, and have a good following there’s plenty of room for you to be successful in the future. Figure out the “why” first so you don’t end up going down the wrong path. Once you’re clear in your decision making, decisions aren’t that hard. Tweetables: Innovation comes from pain, and not giving up. – Dr. Scott Leune It’s so much easier to make a decision when there’s purpose behind it. – Dr. Scott Leune

Some different organizations around the country have been alerting us to the fact that many lenders over the last year have been sending deed in lieu of foreclosure packages directly to homeowners that have not been including a satisfaction of the deficient balance. If you have clients that are considering a deed in lieu of foreclosure, I have two things you should know: 1. Carefully read the documents: Make sure it specifically states that the deficient balance will be forgiven and that they will not pursue their right to collect that deficient balance. 2. Deed in Lieu of Foreclosure is treated as a foreclosure by credit bureaus: When your clients apply for a loan in the future they'll have the same waiting and seasoning period as they would if they had a foreclosure in the past. This is why a short sale may work, but this is not always the case. Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Relief Act At the end of 2014, Congress extended the Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Relief Act. If you have clients that completed a deed in lieu of foreclosure, a short sale, or a foreclosure and received a 1099 for the deficient balance, then this may not be a taxable event if it was their primary residence and they settled the issue in 2014. The good news is that we're hearing whispers from Congress that this act will also be extended into 2015. So, if you have any clients that would be impacted by this development, we urge you to inform them as soon as possible. If you have any further questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact me, I have much more information on this subject.Quick Real Estate Market Update for Chester CountyIt's been a tumultuous year in real estate for the Philadelphia area, and with 2014 now on the back burner, I'd like to give you a brief recap of what happened with our local market.Inventory Accumulation: At the end of 2014, Philadelphia had 5.7 months of inventory, indicating a balanced market. Year to year, there are more homes on the market now than in 2014. There were 5-8% more homes under contract in 2014 in Chester County than there were in 2013. The number of sold units was down in 2014. This could be a result of the weather from last January-March, but the third and fourth quarters of the year picked up the steam nicely and should help us in 2015. On average, the sales price increased by 3.8% in Chester County, which is helping to stabilize the market and allow sellers to get out of their homes while the market appreciates. It's hard to say what will happen in 2015, but a lot of it will depend on our inventory in the next 60 days. We've seen lots of activity and aggressive offers throughout the holidays, which indicates a very strong first quarter for 2015. Prices should continue to increase, days on market will decrease, and this will create a healthy and balanced market for the Philadelphia area. As always, thank you for your referrals. We greatly appreciate doing business with you. If there is ever anything we can do to help you, or if you have any questions about any of the topics covered, be sure to contact us by phone or email.

Inventory Accumulation: This helps us to gauge whether we're in a seller's market or a buyer's market. Zero to three months of inventory is a seller's market, four to six months of inventory is a neutral market, and anything beyond seven months indicates a buyer's market. If you have any questions about how the market is changing in Chester County and how it could affect your purchase or sale, please don't hesitate to call or email us. We're the number one team in Delaware and Chester Counties, so you can expect the best from us.
Anwer, S., Alghadir, A., & Brismee, J. (2016). Effect of Home Exercise Program in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy, 39(1), January-March 2016, 38-48. "The Osteoarthritis Research Society International recommended that non-pharmacological methods include patient education programs, weight reduction, coping strategies, and exercise programs for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, neither a systematic review nor a meta-analysis has been published regarding the effectiveness of home exercise programs for the management of knee OA." "The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the evidence regarding the effect of home exercise programs with and without supervised clinic-based exercises in the management of knee OA." In 1983, Soviet satellites reported that the United States had launched a nuclear missile toward Moscow, and one officer had only minutes to decide whether to initiate a counterstrike. In today's show we'll learn about some nuclear near misses from the Cold War that came to light only decades after they occurred. We'll also hear listeners' input about crescent moons and newcomers to India, and puzzle over the fatal consequences of a man's departure from his job. Our yearly coverage of the upcoming game releases. Part 1 too, which covers the scheduled releases from January-March and a few later than that.

This week it's all about Xbox 360: Year One. The ups, downs, and everywhere in between. We talk about microtransactions, Xbox Live Arcade, the January-March game drought, the digital distribution model, achievements, online play, everything Xbox 360.Naturally we also do a What'cha Been Playing segment at the beginning where we discuss Elite Beat Agents, Zelda on Wii, Resistance and Ridge Racer on PS3, and Bonk's Adventure. And sandwiched in at the end of this episode is a section where we read back some of your feedback. Be sure to send us e-mail or an audio comment, leave a comment on our blog page or Skype voicemail. We'll talk about and play some of that on future shows. digg_url = 'http://www.digg.com/podcasts/Player_One_Podcast'; digg_bgcolor = '#FFCC99'; digg_skin = 'compact';
