It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. Part 2 of our decades of horror: Torgo picked a 70's horror film In this video, we dive deep into Nicolas Roeg's 1973 psychological horror masterpiece, Don't Look Now. Based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the film stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as a grieving couple navigating the canals of Venice after the tragic death of their daughter. We explore the film's haunting atmosphere, Roeg's non-linear storytelling, and its shocking, iconic ending. I'll also discuss the film's use of symbolism, especially the recurring motif of the color red, and how the setting enhances the pervasive sense of dread. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/havenofhorror/support

Like Schwarzenegger after him, he just needed to find the role he was born to play. Following the career track of Nicholas Roeg, we come to one of his seminal films, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. It's a head-scratcher and we say that with an understanding of Roeg's work being a little disjointed and a heavy use of visual metaphors and match cutting BUT... It would have been nice to get a better through-line in the story. But no one hates this movie at OTB HQ, certainly not when Rip Torn is tearing through this sexy sci-fi circus like a Professor Lothario!
Zero and Wiz RECOMMEND Walkabout Walkabout, Nicolas Roeg's survival film about two kids having to make it back to civilization through the Australian desert, is actually not really about surviving at all. It's a film that is blanketed with multiple themes and interpretations that give the film a much deeper, dark feeling that what was expected. You can see that in the reviewers thoughts on the film itself: Zero felt it was more about a story of cultures communicating despite the language barrier between them and the miscommunications that cause strife between them. Meanwhile, Wiz had a distinct feeling this was about the maturation of a young girl blossoming into a woman and how unexpected and emotional it truly is. Both themes are supported in the film through it's imagery and the way Roeg captures the environment throughout the story being played out. It's not a film for everyone, however: Walkabout has some scenes of animals being abused, cut open and hunted as well as scenes of full frontal nudity. But if you can handle those scenes (or look away when they happen?), you are in for a thoughtful, emotional and powerfully entrancing trek through the desert.

Horror Well-Cut: Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now This week Ibrahim & I continue our descent into Horror Cinema with a look at a British Classic, Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now (1973). Beautifully edited, masterfully directed, and sensitively acted (from stars Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland), Nicholas Roeg's film examines the struggle of a married couple as they attempt to continue living after the accidental drowning of their young daugter. Featuring a sex scene that has stirred controversy and speculation for over forty years, Roeg's film utilizes tension built through incredible tension and editing. Don't Look Now is a film that has continued to captivate critics while unsettling audiences since the film's premiere in 1973. Take a listen and let us know what you think. The film uses a non-linear structure to portray a tumultuous love affair between a free spirited young woman and a psychiatrist living in Vienna. Receiving an extremely limited release in 1980, Roeg's lush and complex film didn't gain notoriety until repeat airings on the Z Channel cable station and, much later, a 2005 Criterion disc release. Listen in on Mama Needs a Movie's sensual obsession with this cult classic, along with sexy diversions into Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, The Exorcist, the 1994 Northridge earthquake, manic pixie dream girls, Serpico, Starbucks, Gene Hackman, Mighty Joe Young, and much, much more! BAD TIMING is available to stream with subscription on The Criterion Channel.
We're back for another Banned Book discussion about Roald Dahl's The Witches (1963) which we've partnered with Nicolas Roeg's 1990 adaptation, as well as tangential conversation about Robert Zemeckis' 2020 film. Thanks to listener Miriam for contributing!Yes, this book was banned...for promoting witchcraft, not Dahl's anti-semitism, which we have to discuss . It's such a shame because the book - with its willingness to put children in danger and its "grim dark" ending - is still great (bonus points for Quentin Blake's illustrations). Then the film is all about Anjelica Houston's Grand High Witch, cute Jim Henson mice, Roeg's POV camerawork and great practical FX.Wanna connect with the show? Performance is a 1970 British crime drama film directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, written by Cammell and photographed by Roeg. The film stars James Fox as a violent and ambitious London gangster who, after killing an old friend, goes into hiding at the home of a reclusive rock star (Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drzeusfilmpodcast/support
The 2020 comedy-thriller The Nowhere Inn defies easy categorization, or facile interpretation.
Nicolas Roeg was one of the most idiosyncratic filmmakers of his generation. Today Jason and Keith look at Roeg's whole career with an emphasis on perhaps his two most popular - and still challenging films, Don't Look Now and The Man Who Fell to Earth. And they have a lot to say about the movies, with a full 90 minutes of fascinating discussion on what it means to be haunted, the existential pain of being an alien, and the horrors of gun sex. If you're anything like the Mutiny of Preverts crew, and you've spent decades watching and appreciating all the great cinema of the world, there is one question you find yourself returning to time and again: What exactly does it look like when Rip Torn has vigorous, athletic coitus with a coed? Well, lucky for you the films of Nicolas Roeg have the answer. And they also have the answer to similar copulatory questions about Donald Sutherland, Julie Christie, Theresa Russell, David Bowie, Candy Clark, James Fox, Mick Jagger, Rutger Hauer... We could go on. Despite the wealth of boning related topics, Azed, Jay and unofficial third host Omar Majeed also make time to discuss many of the formal and thematic elements of Roeg's films that make him one of the all time great directors. Azed, in particular, makes an astute connection between Roeg's fragmented visual and auditory style and the deeply alienated and traumatized characters that inhabit his films that you will not want to miss.

There are certain movies that automatically make the Halloween marathon, or at least they should. For years, cult classic The Witches, based on Rolad Dahl's book by the same name, starring Anjelica Huston has landed somewhere on that list between Hocus Pocus and Nightmare on Elm Street. Now, HBO hopes you add the Anne Hathaway-led remaking directed by Robert Zemeckis to that watch list. This film - still geared towards children (allegedly) - offers a few unsettling chills and plenty of campiness wrapped in sly humor. Leaning into Dahl's The Witches It's 1967, a young boy (Jahzir Bruno) and his Grandma (Octavia Spencer) find themselves trapped in a hotel during a convention of witches plotting to bespell the world's children turning them into mice. The duo - along with some unlikely accomplices - must outwit the Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway) and thwart her master plan. Viewing audiences grew up with the child-friendly version this story (this is a lie, Huston's coven of witches scared the bejeezus out of plenty). It's a wicked adventure of a boy left unexpectedly orphaned - who's then attacked by a wicked witch - learning to persevere. For the most part, the main plot points remain unchanged. And while Zemeckis tries to (re)capture the darker undertone of Dahl's forty-year-old tale, the Kenya Barris and Guillermo del Toro crafted script updates time, place, and the ethnic origins of several main characters along with reworking certain key story elements. (L-r)OCTAVIA SPENCER as Grandma, JAHZIR BRUNO as Hero Boy, and STANLEY TUCCI as Mr. Stringer in Warner Bros. Pictures’ fantasy adventure “THE WITCHES,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release. Photograph by Daniel Smith The costumes are stellar, the cast and location (Alabama) add just the right touch of macabre, and the practical effects and CGI work together to create the right edgy if uptight notes. So, the really question is will it appeal to today's audience? Listen as Ro gives a quick breakdown of The Witches and how she thinks it stacks up against the source material and 1990 Roeg adaptation. The occasion of Second Sight Film's wonderful 4K release of Nicolas Roeg's debut feature as sole director allowed for a chance to spend some time focusing on a favourite filmmaker of the podcast. Thanks to AIM Publicity we were offered the chance to talk to one of the film's actors, leading British film producer and son of the director, Luc Roeg. Neil spoke to him earlier in the year and that conversation forms the basis of this episode, alongside a chat Neil had with Melbourne based film critic Andrew Peirce on the legacy of the film in Australian film culture. Neil and Dario get into the slippery nature of the film's representational politics and stark, beautiful aesthetic and kick the episode off trying to remain positive in the face of an overwhelmingly bleak period for the global cinema industry. One evening in 1954, Marylin Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, and Senator Joseph McCarthy gathered in Albert Einstein’s New York City hotel room to excitedly monologue at one another about subjects like fame, sex, motherhood, baseball, communism, and the precise shape of the universe. Or at least that’s what happens in Nicolas Roeg’s 1985 Insignificance. It’s basically the film adaptation of a stage play adaptation of one of those corny posters that imagines Marylin Monroe, Elvis Presley, Humphrey Bogart, and James Dean hanging out at a Soda Shop and being all, you know, iconic and stuff. But it is Roeg, and it is based on a play, it might just be...kind of deep? Join us for a listen and find out the film fulfills that implied promise. If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Shohei Imamura’s Vengeance Is Mine (1979).

Movie Meltdown - Episode 472 This week we return to our annual series The People Who Died… as we pay tribute to just some of the celebrities we lost in 2018. Including some personal stories of our own interactions with a few of the dearly departed. And while we wonder if we’ll be considered a phenomenon had the lasting effect on generations of people, we also address… the wheelchair in Forrest Gump, Eighth Grade, The Henson Studios, Anjelica Huston, they recreated that corner of the street from police photographs, playing a permutation of the same roll, it’s as much a history lesson and a performance, we'll have these weird little moments of serendipity in life, he's not the kind of guy would let a little thing like a typhoon and stop him from making his movie, everybody’s Grandpa,William Peter Blatty, editing that was unconventional for that era, the next Exorcist, if you’re not here… you’re material, an architect who helps restore old churches, felt pressured into doing the scene, The Prestige, there's so much real-life experience in the face, it's strange the way that it delivers its brand of weirdness, Todd Solondz, the rigmarole of the legal system, Tinky Winky, you could tell he was a prankster by nature, the Coen Brothers, the horror is the atmosphere, John Boorman, kept re-finding herself, the comedy grows with the kids, the eternal father figure, The Simpsons, his transformation from a brooding, mysterious jackass to a gregarious, dancing, gum-chewing jackass, the first true-crime movie, it was a one-legged Mayor… of the city… he had a peg leg, I don’t think there’s ever been a more Fred-statement, I feel like that's just a holdover of old Hollywood, anachronistic jump cuts back and forth, crooked dice from the 1500s and acting right up to the grave. Spoiler Alert: Along the way we end up ruining the ending of Don’t Look Now, Sleepaway Camp and possibly Hereditary and A Serious Man. So listen carefully… you have been warned. “Well, I would actually say out of all those that died this past year - if I’d expected any one of them to have been clever enough to stage their own death, it would have been…”
For this episode of Four Brains One Movie, Dan and I welcome to the show a fine gentleman as well as an extraordinary story teller (especially by way of illustration) and filmmaker Patrick Horvath. On the show we not only have the pleasure of talking to Patrick about his work, but we also had the wonderful opportunity to discuss a great film with him... specifically, for this episode, Nicolas Roeg's 1973 film 'Don't Look Now'. We recorded the episode shortly after Roeg's recent passing and am happy to finally be able to make this one available to our listeners. It was a delightful conversation as well as an enlightening review (for me at least) of one of the great horror films of the 1970's. With Francine Stock. Nic Roeg, who died in November, had a profound effect on many British film-makers. Francine Stock hears from some of the directors who fell under his spell, including Danny Boyle, Asif Kapadia, Carol Morley, Andrew Haigh and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey. And there's a chance to listen to the man himself, including highlights from an edition of The Film Programme that was recorded in Roeg's living room. Plus, Jenny Agutter, Paul Mayersberg, Jeremy Thomas and Terence Stamp from The Film Programme vaults.

This week Invasion of the Remake celebrates three years of podcasting glory with David Bowie starring in his first lead roll in a feature film, The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976). Director Nicolas Roeg brings his idiosyncratic style and vision to this very unique science fiction film. A film that relies more on implied ideas than plot and special effects. The results make for a surreal, disjointed, introspective experience that most likely would never had been made today. What would that look like? Could The Man Who Fell to Earth even be remade today? Join Invasion of the Remake as we attempt to wrap our collective minds around this movie and attempt to rethink, recast, and ultimately remake this cult classic film. Our first Roeg film since Walkabout does nothing to further endear us.
Ari Aster’s breakout debut HEREDITARY draws on a fair number of horror touchpoints, but it’s linked by its themes of parental grief and psychic distress to another terrifying film about the lingering impact of a death in the family: Nicolas Roeg’s form-busting 1973 thriller DON’T LOOK NOW. In this half focused on Roeg’s film, we discuss why the film’s intensity of emotion is integral to its horror, what makes its shadowy vision of Venice so unnerving, and what's behind the film’s famously graphic sex scene. Plus, some feedback on our recent episode on GOLDFINGER and INCREDIBLES 2. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about DON’T LOOK NOW, HEREDITARY, or both by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.

A departure for us -- as edited by Patrick this time 'round -- in which the great Bill Ackerman and Patrick talk about controversial British filmmaker Nicholas Roeg. They delve into the majority of his filmography, bypassing the "What we watched" segment, but nevertheless, this is an episode you won't want to miss and won't soon forget! Thanks as always for listening and stay tuned for the Wes Anderson episode in about a week! - Jim
David: An art movie, a drug movie, Nicolas Roeg’s directing debut, a Mick Jagger acting debut, a late, post-swinging 60′s bohemian manifesto, but underpinning all that one of the best British gangster flicks around. It features a foulmouthed, thuggish, head kicking turn by the erstwhile toffee nosed James Fox as bovver-boy Chas, who comes in for some heavy deconstruction when, finding himself on the run, he chooses the dark cave of a retired rock-star recluse to lay low in. Not an atom of machismo survives. Add mushrooms and flip genre. Tasty.Jules: The reality-distortion of fame, and its possible relation to the shamanic undercurrents of consensus reality, seem to intersect in this glimpse inside British counterculture. Cammell and Roeg expertly oversee the somehow-mythic triumvirate of Fox, Jagger, and Pallenberg in this postmodern Greek tragedy where normalised sociopathy substitutes for humanistic virtue. overlookedpictures.com
