Host Ralph Pezzullo is the guest this week—talking about his new book, “The Great Chinese Art Heist,” (Pegasus Crime.) Interviewed by renowned art theft expert Anthony Amore, Ralph breaks down the series of ‘pink-panther-like' museum robberies of Chinese art and antiquities across Europe, and links them to the systematic looting and destruction during the Opium Wars of China's famed Old Summer Palace.Taking only what they perceive to be rightfully theirs—and often leaving valuable European artworks behind—It has become chic for Chinese billionaires to fund these art ‘reclamation' thefts to demonstrate their patriotism, as they leverage the international criminal organization of the Chinese triads and their nefarious colleagues in different regions. Intimidated at running afoul of Chinese investment in their countries, their victims have done little to protest.Pezzullo's research also unearths China's perspective that they endured a ‘century of humiliation' at the hands of the west from the mid-19C to Mao's Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, and that they are now pursuing “unrestricted warfare” aimed at Europe and the U.S. in their declared ‘Century of Revenge.' “A treat for history buffs and caper fans alike!” – Publishers WeeklyHeroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com

These back-to-back monologues expose a worldview in which China has launched a multifront hidden war against the United States and its allies. The speaker argues that Beijing is circumventing tariffs by routing goods through dozens of countries and working through Iran and the Houthis to attack Western shipping, target U.S. naval forces, and undermine populist movements in Europe. At home, the narrative portrays an escalating “guerrilla civil war,” as left-wing activists allegedly intimidate ICE agents, exploit mass immigration as a political weapon, and attempt to terrorize law enforcement into submission. Blending geopolitical alarm with domestic outrage, the commentary paints a picture of coordinated threats abroad and within—driven by a Chinese quest for global dominance and enabled by U.S. political elites.
Welcome to Season 5, Episode 28! In this episode, we sit down with Michael Luo, the award-winning journalist, editor, and author of Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America. Currently an executive editor at The New Yorker, Michael writes extensively on politics, religion, and Asian American issues. Before joining The New Yorker, he spent over a decade at The New York Times as a national correspondent and investigative reporter, earning accolades like the George Polk Award and the Livingston Award for Young Journalists. His latest book, Strangers in the Land, published by Doubleday in April 2024, is a sweeping and deeply researched narrative history of the Chinese American experience—from the Gold Rush era to the 1960s. Drawing from archival sources, court cases, and personal stories, Luo sheds light on how Chinese immigrants helped build America while simultaneously being pushed to its margins. He highlights the people and policies that shaped their journey—from the railroad workers and early activists to the architects of exclusion laws and the courts that upheld them. Through vivid storytelling and compelling analysis, Luo explores the roots of anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S., the foundations of our modern immigration surveillance state, and the broader struggle for belonging in a multiracial democracy. This is a must-read not only for lovers of history but for anyone seeking to understand how the past shapes our present-day debates on race, immigration, and identity. In our conversation, Michael shares insights on how he approached this project, why it was important to center underrepresented figures like Hung Wah, Wong Chin Foo, Chin Gee Hee, and Sun Chong, and how understanding this history can guide us through today's political and cultural tensions. If you want to hear more from Michael you can read his work in the New Yorker or see his posts on Instagram @luomich. AFIO Now presents a special episode with Norman Roule, former National Intelligence Manager, ODNI; former Division Chief, CIA Operations Officer, Chief of Station. In this AFIO Special Edition episode Norm Roule and Jim Hughes discuss recent attacks by US and Israel on Iran. Questions covered: Imagine the Supreme Leader is meeting with his inner security circle. What are their priorities at this moment? Are they achievable? And what weapons of the regime still have at its disposal? If things were starting to come apart in Iran, what are some of the highlights that we should look for? What are some of the indicators? What does a 12 day war mean for the region? What are senior regional leaders saying both publicly and privately? Are other Gulf countries - Qatar, the Emirates, the Saudis, the Omanis, the Kuwaitis, the Gulf Cooperation Council - pleased with the attacks? They now can raise the issue that the Chinese are selling ammonium percolate to the Iranians, which the Iranians are giving to the Houthis and the Houthi. And then using against everyone in the region and the world's economy itself. Does the Iranian nuclear enrichment program still exist in any form? Will the IAEA be allowed in or does it become a bargaining chip in long, drawn out negotiations? What does a diminished Iran mean for the region? There's been a lot of talk about realignment. Is that likely to happen and what can Iran try to do to counter that? Interview of Monday, 1 July 2025. Interviewed by AFIO President, James Hughes.

Shin Yu Pai was already a published poet and museologist when she entered a contest by the Pacific Northwest's National Public Radio to pitch an idea for a new podcast that focused on Asian Americans. Around seventy people submitted concepts, but NPR picked Shin Yu's. That propelled her into the very formulaic world of NPR podcasts. She learned quickly, and her show became a huge hit in that region. But after three years, she was told that it had come to an end. Shin Yu found ways to identify and process her grief, and then decided to reboot her podcast with the help of an independent production company. But now, unfettered by NPR's way of doing things, Shin Yu is bringing much more of her own voice and perspective to Ten Thousand Things, the award-winning podcast about modern-day artifacts of Asian American life.

From ancient dynasties to bustling megacities, China is a land steeped in history, legend, and superstition. Behind the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and neon-lit skylines lies a shadowy world of ghost stories and haunted places that have terrified generations. In this episode, we'll uncover eerie tales of restless spirits, cursed buildings, and paranormal hotspots that make China one of the most fascinating—and haunted—countries on Earth. We begin with the Forbidden City in Beijing, perhaps the most famous haunted location in China. Built in the 1400s, it was the seat of emperors for nearly 500 years. Countless executions, murders, and palace intrigues have left behind a legacy of hauntings. Guards and visitors report seeing ghostly women in white, strange apparitions at night, and hearing unexplained screams echoing through the massive courtyards and darkened halls. Next, we travel to Chaonei No. 81, known as “Beijing's Most Haunted House.” This crumbling French Baroque-style mansion dates back to the early 20th century and is the stuff of urban legend. Rumors swirl about a woman who hanged herself after being abandoned by her lover. Locals claim to hear weeping inside, see her shadow moving behind boarded windows, and even feel violently ill when approaching the building at night. We'll also discuss the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. Though famous for its beautiful classical design, it's also home to centuries of bloodshed from rebellions and wars. Locals speak of encountering spirits in traditional garb, shadowy figures slipping between rockeries and bridges, and disembodied whispers after dark. Our episode wouldn't be complete without exploring China's rich ghost lore. We'll talk about the Hungry Ghost Festival—a time when spirits are believed to roam the Earth seeking offerings and revenge. Families burn paper money and leave food for the dead, hoping to appease them and prevent misfortune. We'll also examine some chilling modern hauntings, including ghostly subway stations in Beijing where passengers report spectral encounters, phantom trains, and even deadly urban legends about portals to the afterlife hidden in plain sight. Throughout this episode, we'll discuss why China's deep respect for ancestors, Buddhist and Taoist beliefs, and folklore about vengeful spirits shape the way these hauntings are understood. You'll learn how Chinese ghost stories differ from Western ones, yet tap into the same primal fears about betrayal, loss, and the unknown. So turn down the lights, grab your tea (or your favorite ghost-hunting gear), and join us as we explore the darker side of China—a land where history and the paranormal go hand in hand. Whether you're fascinated by ancient curses, tragic love stories, or modern urban legends, this episode is sure to haunt your imagination. A few of the highlights include: Livestock Indemnity Program Establishes a payment rate for losses due to predation at 100% of the market value and losses due to adverse weather or disease at 75% of the market value. Introduces additional payments for unborn livestock death losses incurred on or after January 1, 2024, at a rate determined by the Secretary, not exceeding 85% of the payment rate for the lowest weight class of livestock. A temporary 90-day tariff cut — down to 32% for beef and 57% for pork — failed to revive U.S. meat shipments to levels seen in May 2024. Trade Challenges Mount Ahead of August Deadline Compounding the issue, China declined to renew registrations for multiple U.S. beef plants and cold storage facilities in February, further restricting exports, says the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). “The need for progress in trade talks is urgent,” said USMEF President Dan Halstrom, warning that tariffs could spike again on August 12. Exporters are already reconsidering their plans for the Chinese market. The Prime Minister has struggled to avoid a US-sized elephant in the room on the first full day of his visit to China, with questions of military allegiance arising from the strategist conducting the US AUKUS review. Despite these tensions, the start of his six-day tour has been spent launching a brand new campaign to encourage Chinese tourists to visit Australia, and a morning walk along Shanghai's historic Bund promenade to promote the two nations' interpersonal links.

In this one, I talk to Katie Ringsmuth. She's the Alaska State Historian, the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer and the creator of the NN Cannery History Project, a seven-year effort to preserve and interpret the stories of the people who powered one of Alaska's most historic salmon canneries. For Katie, this story is personal. She grew up around the NN Cannery in South Naknek, where her dad worked for decades, eventually becoming the last superintendent of the Alaska Packers' Association. He started in 1964 as a young college graduate in Kodiak, doing whatever odd jobs needed doing — from sorting crab to running the entire operation at the NN Cannery. Under his leadership, the cannery shifted away from the rigid, old-school model of command-and-control superintendents — “Tony Soprano–style,” as Katie puts it — and toward something more humane. He created housing for families, hired women and built a workplace that people returned to year after year. The NN Cannery History Project is more than just about the processing plant, it's about preserving its historical importance and honoring its workers. The cannery itself was a cultural crossroads with a workforce that included Alaska Native peoples, Scandinavians, Italians, Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino laborers. Canned food revolutionized how people ate. It made it possible to preserve and transport perishable foods across vast distances, reshaping global diets and economies — and the NN Cannery was a key player in that transformation. Originally built as a saltery in 1897, the NN Cannery went on to produce more canned salmon than any other cannery in the state. Katie's work on the NN Cannery History Project ultimately led to the site being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a recognition that underscores its national significance. Throughout the project, Katie explores how Alaska fits into the global history of canned food and how preservation — both of fish and of stories — can change the way we understand place, labor and legacy.

Catherine, David and Matt were joined by Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic to talk through Iga Swiatek becoming Wimbledon champion and her 6-0 6-0 win over Amanda Anisimova in the final. In part one we talk through what happened in a match that had the most one-sided of scorelines and the most brutal of defeats for a nervous and – in her own estimation – tired, Amanda Anisimova. We discuss how nerves played their part in limiting Anisimova's ability to hurt Swiatek and how much the semi-final against Sabalenka may have taken from her in emotional energy. Disappointing as it was from her point of view, however, we had plenty of space to talk about the brilliance of Iga Swiatek in grand slam finals, her ruthlessness and power today, her resilience in coming back after a number of disappointing results to take this title, and how her victory changes the narrative of women's tennis. Finally, it's a scoreline which once again got us talking about best of three vs best of five. In part two (44m04s) we discuss the other results from today, including a first victory in a very long time for an all British pair – Cash and Glasspool - in the men's doubles, of an intense and dramatic victory for De la Puente and Spaargaren over Hewett and Reid in the men's wheelchair doubles, and of a new star in Chinese wheelchair tennis as Wang Ziying denied Yui Kamiji her first Wimbledon victory and a career golden slam. In part three (50m18s) we give you a preview of the men's final tomorrow and look ahead to the final order of play at the Championships 2025. A new documentary revisits the fiasco and its copy-cat plans to “storm” Loch Ness and the Bermuda Triangle. 01:10:00 – China's 12-Day, 60-Mile Traffic Jam: An infamous 2010 grid-lock spawned roadside mini-marts selling $15 water and $5 cigarettes while cars advanced one kilometre a day—capitalism with Chinese characteristics, the hosts joke. 01:20:00 – Phone-Lines Open & The Dam-Breaking Motif: Call-in listeners riff on “dam breaking” themes—UFO secrecy, immigration backlash, and Epstein fallout—echoing the show's running metaphor of mounting public frustration. 01:30:00 – Boston: America's Worst Drivers (Again): Allstate's annual report crowns Boston crash-king for the tenth straight year (one accident every three years!), while Texas cities dominate the safe-driver list. 01:40:00 – “I Buy Crack Houses” Billboard Backlash: A Cleveland flipper's provocative ads—“Your house is trash, I pay cash”–trigger city-council outrage, but the hosts argue it spotlights broken-windows blight that drags neighbourhoods down. 01:50:00 – NASA's Smuggled Corned-Beef Sandwich & ‘Admin/Admin': From default Pentagon passwords to Gemini-3 astronauts sneaking rye-bread subs into orbit, security lapses (and crumbs) make for delicious—and costly—space-program lore. 02:00:00 – Profane Sing-Along & Sign-Off: The episode closes with an impromptu, expletive-laden jam about gas-filled road trips, selling “big-ass” stuff, and cranking up the radio—classic OBDM energy to play us out. Leslie is joined by Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), a partnership established by some of America's leading manufacturers and the United Steelworkers union. The pair first discusses a new piece that Scott wrote for 'Industry Week' that finally puts to rest one of U.S. manufacturing naysayers' favorite lines: “Who wants to work in a factory anyway?” Next, they explore what progress has the Trump administration made on all of their attempted trade deals after the White House extended its reciprocal tariff pause to August 1st, with the hope of securing more deals. Third, Scott and Leslie explain why Americans should be pleased about a new 10-year end to 'the de minimis exemption,' a Customs loophole that Chinese e-commerce behemoths like Temu and DHGate had been exploiting. Fourth, Leslie asks Scott about an FTC letter sent on the same day Amazon launched its Prime Day sale this week, which called on the e-commerce giant (and Walmart) to put a stop to false “Made in USA” claims on its website. This comes after Amazon's marketplace has increasingly become a Wild West of products from third-party vendors as it seeks to emulate SHEIN and Temu. Finally, both Leslie and Scott applauded Senator Elissa Slotkin for a recent speech she gave outlining her “Economic War Plan." They also found this particular line from the speech very timely: "As a CIA officer and Pentagon official by training, I believe that the single, greatest security threat to the United States is *not* coming from abroad. It's the shrinking middle class here at home." The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (07/10/2025): 3:05pm- While speaking with the press, President Trump reacted to Senator Jose Padilla's (D-CA) proposed bill which would prevent ICE agents from wearing masks and concealing their personal identity. There have been several recent attacks on ICE facilities—including one attack in McAllen, Texas involving a man with an assault rifle. Despite these violent attacks, Democrats continue to unjustly demonize ICE agents. 3:30pm- According to a report from Fox News Digital, the Department of Justice is criminally investigating former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey for potential false statements to Congress related to the disproven Trump campaign/Russia collusion narrative. While appearing on MSNBC with Nicolle Wallace, Brennan claimed the investigation into him was “weaponizing intelligence and justice.” In addition to espousing falsehoods about the 2016 election, Brennan has notably lied about civilian casualties that resulted from Obama Administration drone strikes and about the CIA illegally accessing the computers of U.S. Senate staffers. 4:00pm- Salena Zito—Award Winning Political Reporter—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss her new book, “Butler: The Untold Story of the Near Assassination of Donald Trump and the Fight for America's Heartland.” Nearly one year later, she recounts what it was like standing just feet from the stage in Butler, Pennsylvania when shots rang out. She recalls her daughter telling her: “I wanted it to be fireworks. I didn't want to think we were literally sitting ducks and being fired at.” You can find the book here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/salena-zito/butler/9781546009146/. 4:30pm- Corey DeAngelis— Senior Fellow at the American Culture Project & Author of the book, “The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Our Schools”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show and reacts to the United Federation of Teachers endorsing Zoran Mamdani for Mayor of New York City, explaining: “They locked arms with the socialist candidate.” He also reveals that despite opposing school choice, Mamdani attended a private school that costs $66K per year for kindergarten! 5:05pm- Bill D'Agostino—Senior Research Analyst at Media Research Center—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to breakdown some of the best (and worst) moments from corporate media: major media outlets are refusing to cover far-left attacks against ICE agents in Texas and CNN data suggests Americans aren't afraid of climate change (despite progressive fear mongering). 5:30pm- A California woman says her home was mistakenly listed as the return address for a Chinese car seat seller on Amazon—and consequently, her home has been flooded with unwanted returns! PLUS, why can't Livyy Dunn live in Babe Ruth's $1.6 million condo? 5:45pm- On Wednesday, former White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor invoked the Fifth Amendment while testifying before the House Oversight Committee about President Joe Biden's cognitive health. 6:05pm- Susan Crabtree—RealClearPolitics National Political Correspondent & Author of the book, “Fools Gold: The Radicals, Con Artists, and Traitors Who Killed the California Dream and Now Threaten Us All”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss her latest report: “Key supervisors who signed off on the Butler security plan and two who were on the final walkthroughs before the…rally were never disciplined but instead received BIG PROMOTIONS.” 6:30pm- Jimmy Failla—Host of “Fox News Saturday with Jimmy Failla” & “Fox Across America”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show. Is Jimmy concerned about having a socialist mayor? No way! The breadlines might help him lose weight! Failla will be performing at SoulJoel's in Montgomery County, PA on August 9th.
