How do we show up better for people in crisis, or anyone facing tragedy? Because I think a lot of the time, we're getting it wrong. I believe that humans innately want to help, but societally, we were never taught HOW to help effectively.Whether someone we know is dealing with the aftermath of fires or natural disaster, job loss, a death, divorce/breakup, fertility issues, or health diagnoses… life is hard enough without the bombardment of platitudes and toxically positive “silver linings”.We need to learn the power of meeting people where they are in their processing, and get comfortable sitting with them in their pain. Because the world is a better place when we show up for one another.Tune in for helpful ways to support:Things you can say to someone instead of dismissive platitudesHow to support in a way that takes the burden off the ones who are sufferingBeing specific and proactive in the ways you helpOffering support tailored to your unique strengths and giftsDon't “bright side” or silver lining someone's griefLearn to ask questions and hold space for someone's griefHow to depressurize communication during crisisStick to the facts and avoid speculationPlay the long-game in support: be the friend who shows up months later, when they feel forgottenFor advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: For many, the holiday season is synonymous with joy, family, and celebration. But for others, it brings a heavy reminder of loss and sorrow. Grief can take many forms—the loss of a loved one, a relationship that ended, or even a dream that was never realized. Today, we will navigate this journey together and explore how, even in the midst of grief, we can find glimpses of hope. You are not alone in this, and we'll spend time talking about practical strategies, share stories, and dig into Scripture to see what God says about our pain. Quotables from the episode: I want to start by acknowledging your grief. During the Christmas season, there's often a societal expectation to be cheerful and merry, but if you're dealing with loss, that expectation can feel impossible to meet. Maybe it's the first Christmas without a loved one, or perhaps the memories from past years are bittersweet. Your pain is real, and it's valid. Remember that Jesus was familiar with grief. The shortest verse in the Bible, ‘Jesus wept' (John 11:35), shows us that even the Savior of the world mourned with those He loved. He is not indifferent to your sorrow. The Psalms are filled with the raw, honest emotions of those who suffered, reminding us that we can bring our pain to God, and He meets us there. Grief is not linear, and it doesn't follow a predictable timeline. It's normal for grief to feel sharper around the holidays. Instead of suppressing your emotions or feeling like you need to ‘move on,' give yourself the space to grieve. Remember that Jesus invites us to come to Him with our burdens. Rest doesn't mean the absence of grief, but the presence of God in the midst of it. Traditions can be both comforting and painful. If certain traditions feel like too much to handle, give yourself permission to simplify. This might be the year you skip decorating the tree or decide not to host a large gathering. Consider creating a new tradition that honors your loss while bringing some comfort. Perhaps lighting a candle at the dinner table, donating in your loved one's name, or hanging a special ornament in their memory. Grief and joy can coexist. Even in the midst of sorrow, there can be moments of beauty and joy—if we're open to seeing them. This could be as simple as enjoying a favorite Christmas song, taking a walk in nature, or sitting quietly with a warm drink. Grief can feel incredibly isolating, especially during a season that emphasizes togetherness. It's important to remember that you don't have to walk this journey alone. Christmas, at its core, is about the hope of Jesus. It's easy to get caught up in the decorations, presents, and festivities, but the real meaning of Christmas is that Jesus came to be with us—God with us, Immanuel. He came into a broken world to bring light in the darkness. When grief feels overwhelming, return to this truth: that Jesus came to bind up the brokenhearted and bring hope to the hopeless. Scripture References: John 11:35 ‘Jesus wept.' Matthew 11:28 says, “‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.'” Zephaniah 3:17 says, ‘The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.' Galatians 6:2 reminds us to ‘Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.' Sometimes, we need others to help carry the weight of our grief.” Isaiah 9:2 says, ‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.' Psalm 34:18 - ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.' Revelation 21:4 - ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' Matthew 5:4 - ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.' Annette Weidenfeld, Campaign Development Director, and WMMR's own Nick McIlwain, volunteer and ‘Philadelphia Man of the Year' candidate, discussed the programs and successes of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Annette described what constitutes a blood cancer and we discussed who gets the diagnosis; she notes that children make up about 40% of cases, but that genetic and environmental factors mean that anyone or any age can develop one. We discussed the LLS mission, to cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease and Myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Annette spoke of their success, LLS is at the forefront of the fight to cure cancer and they have invested nearly $1.3 billion in research. She also told us that their breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine and these new treatments discovered through blood cancer research are now being tested in clinical trials for other cancers. Not only are deaths decreasing, Annette tells us that the first treatment in over 30 years for the especially deadly AML is now available. She also discussed their initiatives in childhood care, looking to decrease the long-term side-effects of treatment. We spoke about patient outcomes and their advocacy for access to treatment and affordable healthcare. Learn more about their work and how you can support them at LLS.ORG. We talked about their patient services, LLS is there from diagnosis through treatment and more, with peer support, referrals, and even financial help. Nick, part of the Preston & Steve Morning Show on BMG's WMMR, spoke about his work for LLS. His young nephew and his father were both diagnosed with blood cancers within the same year. He had participated in LLS events through the station, but now he knew first-hand how important LLS is to the families fighting these diseases and he stepped up to becoming one of their leading advocates. He was especially touched that they cared about his entire family, not just the patients, and offered advice and support through every step of their way through treatment. Nick has lead the Beasley stations' fundraising, through ‘Team Luke' at the annual Big Climb, to Light the Night and the annual walk. He is now campaigning for ‘Philadelphia Man of Year,' every dollar he raises is a vote for him and needed money for that research and patient support. To learn more about his campaign and his competitors for ‘Man', ‘Woman' and ‘Student of the Year' as well as information about fundraising throughout the year, go to LLS.ORG and check ‘How To Help'

“We feel grief. We feel anger. We feel sadness. We feel mobilized to help. We feel energized. But we feel that our life, it's not the same as it was before.” // “We're on a precipice and people will say why wasn't more done. This is about Ukraine right now, but may not stay about Ukraine. And so not doing anything, it's not an option.” While a tragedy continues to unfold in Ukraine, it remains...abstract ...for many of us. Something terrible happening in a faraway place to a faraway people. We see photos and videos online - a horror is happening to a people we do not know over there, and sadly, we find ourselves going back to our busy lives over here. Ukraine is a sovereign nation of 44 MILLION, with a rich, beautiful culture and people. There's more than another 10 Million folks of Ukrainian heritage living outside of the country, among one of the world's largest diaspora populations. We can't solve the Ukrainian crisis with our podcast. But what we can do is create more empathy and understanding. So we sat down with some Ukie friends - old and new - to learn about their Ukrainian heritage, their personal stories, and their very real feelings in this moment. Olesya Govorun was born in Kyiv, and lives in NY, and a longtime friend of Raman's. Adrianna Melnyk is a 3rd generation Ukrainian American, a non-profit professional active in the Ukrainian American community. Both are daughters, mothers, wives, and all around amazing people living through a unthinkable moment for them, and especially their countrymen. Rebecca Sherbino, founder of the Raw Carrot has a passion to help those not merely through hand outs but through a hand up! Her story, direction and mission is one that we can look at in awe and say, "there's always more that I can do" even when things seem like all options have been exhausted. With an undergraduate Degree in Global Development, Peace and Justice and a Master's Degree in International Development, Rebecca has always had a passion for working with people. Living in 5 countries abroad and working for 4 years in Sustainable Community Development in Malawi and Sudan, Africa, she developed an acute awareness of the issues facing vulnerable and marginalized communities. Her work in developing countries fueled a desire to pursue justice for people both overseas and at home, which resulted in community advocacy in Paris. After adopting 2 children in Africa, Rebecca & her husband moved back to Canada to raise their young children; completing their family with the addition of 1 biological child. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities for work for teens and adults with mental health and learning disabilities in her church congregation, she and good friend (and co-director!) Colleen, were challenged to explore how to promote change within their local context. A late-night coffee date in May 2014 turned into a brainstorming session about the possibility of creating meaningful work for people with disabilities, and over the course of the evening, the idea of launching The Raw Carrot Soup Enterprise was born.Listen in as we discuss how the Raw Carrot is impacting lives; how she came up with the idea; the bright future for this company and ultimately what you can learn from how they are making a difference. I've wanted to have this important conversation for a while now to be a resource for you guys. I know so often we want to help loved ones through tough times but don't know how. We want to help, but feel helpless. In this episode I give concrete examples of ways you can help a loved one in a tough season of life. A lot of my opinions on the matter come from losing my Dad at 22 and what helped me personally. Also, just what I've learned in helping friends and family through depression, traumatic events, etc. I should've prefaced this that of course these are only my opinions and I would urge anyone struggling to seek professional help, or those of you in the helping supportive role to suggest seeking professional help as I touch on in this episode. I know how specific this episode is but I really hope it can help. My youngest step-daughter confides a lot in me and one day she was telling me about a daydream (when her mind wanders off and she thinks "bad" things). Her daydream had her believe that the guest speaker talking at the front of the class was bad, which led her to treat him differently and stay away from him. When she told me this I thought, "shit, how can I help her see the difference between false reality and actual reality?" That question created an idea to share about the "dark voice" and the "light voice" inside of us. This idea has now become a framework for her to come back to when she's acting in ways that don't feel good or that impact others. It's a game-changer.
Mark Cuban is an entrepreneur, television personality and investor. He is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, co-owner of 2929 Entertainment, and one of the main “shark” investors on ABC’s Shark Tank. Today, he’ll discuss the kind of leadership he thinks we need, both in government and business, to get us through this national and international crisis. Mark Cuban explains that, right now, we find ourselves in the midst of two pandemics: a viral one and a social one. At a moment like this, he says people who lead businesses need one thing above all from government leaders: certainty. However, he says that is nowhere to be found. So he says he feels a responsibility to take on a broader leadership role not just across his businesses but across society. Go to NoLabels.org to learn more about how we are bringing together a bipartisan group of public and private leaders working to stop the virus, save lives and get Americans back to work.

Black Lives Matter and always will matter. Social media and protesting are not enough. Anti-Racism is a lifestyle. Fuck racism and fuck police. Fuck Donald trump.HOW TO HELP: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/After our initial thoughts on the murders that have taken place, we speak on how Donald Trump is embarrassing himself and making things even worse (16:30). We then discuss the terrible incident in New York during a protest, and how media censorship is becoming a problem in the perception of what is really going on (24:30). Give our takes on Drew Brees’s terrible take on the Black Lives Matter protests in a recent interview (35:45). Later we discuss the media blackout (42:34) and the results of the black square movement on instagram. Which leads into our conversation about people who are clearly racist and hiding behind good causes to bring them down. We then discuss platforms and the importance of using them, but if an internet post is enough or even necessary depending on who it is (50:17). And if corporations and brands are being genuine or not with their approaches to publicly respond to the protests and injustice (1:01:52). We wrap up this episode with Virgil “50 Ball” Abloh (1:06:12) and a quick talk about racists getting exposed online which is just *chefs kiss* (1:14:35).

Other ways to help: 1. Check out the albums of shorter, more conventional tracks available at conelrad.bandcamp.com. They're free to download or you can pay whatever you like for them. Some people have done this already (thank you so much). 2. Tell as many people as you can about the show! Recommended it to friends–especially those who are artists, writers, coders or people who just need something to help them focus on what they're doing. I personally work in a large open-plan hotdesking office and listen to stuff like this all the time. 3. Subscribe and rate/review the podcast on Apple podcasts.
