Step into day 2 of the new year, the moment when New Year motivation can fade and real life returns. In this guided meditation and ceremony, you'll choose a powerful Word of the Year and turn it into a practical, heart-centered plan you can actually live. You'll learn the psychology of fresh starts (why New Year's creates a real "reset" in the brain), how values-aligned intentions lead to deeper well-being, and why tiny "if–then" plans can make your new theme stick. You'll be guided through calming slow breathing, a candlelit "Bless the Word" ritual, and a comforting story that reframes success as devotion—not pressure. If you're craving a peaceful, grounded way to begin the year, this is your gentle next step: nurture your nervous system, nurture your values, and nurture the life you're growing—one small act at a time. In this Mussar Masterclass (Day 113) on the Gate of Silence in Orchos Tzaddikim, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the profound power of speech through Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel's declaration: "All my life I grew up among sages and found nothing better for oneself than silence." King Solomon adds that even a fool appears wise when silent, and one regrets speech far more than silence. The episode contrasts four (or five) categories of speech: forbidden (mockery, flattery, falsehood, slander—each excluding one from the World to Come by opposing Hashem's essence of oneness, truth, purpose, and sustenance); unnecessary/idle chatter (most worldly talk); and beloved/permissible speech (Torah study, praising good deeds, condemning evil to guide others, and essential livelihood matters). A clever servant's tongue dish (soft vs. hard) illustrates how words can uplift or devastate.Rabbi Wolbe warns against modern pitfalls like social media's anonymous cruelty and sensationalism, urging mindful, positive speech that reflects inner holiness. Silence protects from sin, fosters listening, and allows deeper spiritual focus—ultimately elevating the soul.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on June 16, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on January 2, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! In this Thinking Talmudist episode continuing Gittin 55b, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe delves into the Talmud's account of Vespasian's siege of Jerusalem and the miraculous rise of Titus (Vespasian's successor). When Vespasian receives word of Caesar's death and his impending appointment as emperor, his feet swell from joy—preventing him from putting on his second shoe—until Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai explains it as "good tidings fatten the bones," then suggests seeing someone disliked to restore normal size. Vespasian, now emperor, questions why Rabbi Yochanan delayed coming; the rabbi cites the violent biryone blocking escape.Rabbi Yochanan requests three things: Yavne and its sages (to preserve Torah study), the family of Rabbi Gamliel (Davidic lineage), and doctors for Rabbi Tzadok (who fasted 40 years to avert destruction but shrank his intestines). Rabbi Yosef (or Akiva) critiques this as "foolish wisdom"—he should have asked to save Jerusalem—but the rabbi feared refusal would doom even Yavne. The episode ends with Titus entering the Temple, slashing the parochet (curtain), seeing blood (interpreted as killing God), and the sages marveling at Hashem's restraint toward blasphemy while rewarding the wicked here to punish them eternally._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Many claim that they cannot learn Talmud because it is in ancient Aramaic or the concepts are too difficult. Well, no more excuses. In this podcast you will experience the refreshing and eye-opening teachings while gaining an amazing appreciation for the divine wisdom of the Torah and the depths of the Talmud._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by David & Susan MarbinRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios to a live audience on December 19, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on January 2, 2026_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinking-talmudist-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1648951154Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0cZ7q9bGYSBYSPQfJvwgzmShare your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content._____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life. In this Mussar Masterclass (Day 112), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe opens the Gate of Silence (Shtika) in Orchos Tzaddikim, praising silence as the greatest trait discovered among sages. Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel declares: “All my life I grew up among sages and found nothing better for the body than silence.” King Solomon adds that even a fool who remains silent is considered wise, and one regrets speech far more often than silence.Silence protects from sin—especially lashon hara (slander), insults, and harmful words—while allowing deeper listening and reflection. Rabbi Wolbe critiques modern culture's loss of restraint, especially on social media, where anonymity enables vicious speech people would never say face-to-face (cyberbullying, sensationalism, "if it bleeds, it leads"). He warns that habitual negative speech erodes decency even toward the righteous. The episode calls for cultivating silence not as muteness, but as mindful speech: uplifting others, avoiding gossip, and recognizing words' power to heal or destroy. Examples of anti-Semitic and terror attacks towards Jews around the world have surged in recent years, especially since October 7th and the ensuing war. Last month, a father and son duo in Australia killed fifteen people and injured more than two dozen others at a Hanukah celebration, which authorities called an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack. Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he warned Australia that the country's policies began festering an anti-Semitic tone after calling for the formation of a Palestinian State. FOX's Eben Brown speaks with Rabbi Yaakov Menken, the Executive Vice President of the Coalition for Jewish Values, who says these anti-Semitic attacks should not just be viewed as hatred towards Jewish lives, but hatred towards all life. Episode: 3348 The unspoken binding tissue of Christmas – and of Hanukkah. Today, a Merry Christmas to all.
As 2025 draws to a close, we reflect on a year of challenge, recovery, and renewed calling. In this special episode, we uncover the ancient story behind Hanukkah - and how it points to the greater miracle still to come. From a dreidel in ancient Greece to divine doors opening in modern Israel, we explore how God's covenant faithfulness continues to unfold before our eyes. The Jewish Road is stepping into a new partnership with the government of Israel - helping tell her story to the nations and helping the church understand its part in that story. Along the way, we share updates on health, hope, and the incredible ways God is still writing the story of His people. Key Takeaways: The dreidel tells more than a children's story - it proclaims that “a great miracle happened there” and points to the greater one still to come. Hanukkah reminds us that God always preserves His people, even when the world plots their end. Prophets like Zechariah foresaw a coming deliverance that's still future and messianic. God's pattern of deliverance is consistent - He always raises a redeemer for Israel. A new partnership with Israel's government opens opportunities to help tell her story faithfully to the church. The global church must rediscover its calling to stand with the Jewish people in truth and love. God's faithfulness to Israel guarantees His faithfulness to us; the story is not over. Chapter Markers: 00:00 – A Year-End Reflection 04:10 – Redeeming the Dreidel 10:15 – “A Great Miracle Will Happen Again” 17:30 – Ron's Health Update and God's Mercy 25:00 – A Divine Opportunity with Israel 34:45 – Helping Israel Tell Her Story 42:00 – The Call of “The Few” 48:00 – Closing Blessing: Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem God's promises to Israel are alive and unfolding before our eyes. Join us in standing with the covenant people of God - explore more resources at thejewishroad.com, come to Israel with us, and be one of The Few who help tell this story to the world.
In this engaging Ask Away episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe fields practical and profound questions from participants:Swearing on a non-Jewish Bible in court: In the U.S., one can "affirm" (not swear) under penalty of perjury, avoiding oaths prohibited by Torah; bringing a Chumash is ideal but not required.Cohen status: Transmitted only patrilineally; a Cohen father's daughter does not pass Cohen status to her son.Yom Kippur and Rosh Chodesh coinciding: Impossible, as Yom Kippur is fixed on 10 Tishrei while Rosh Hashanah (1 Tishrei) is always Rosh Chodesh (but overrides it as a greater celebration).Asking Hashem for specific signs: Perfectly permissible and powerful—Hashem responds to sincere, simple requests.Eating in a kosher-keeping but non-Shabbat-observant home: Delicate; Shabbat observance generally indicates reliability in other areas, but during growth transitions, caution is advised to avoid offense.Visualizing during prayer: Avoid images (risking idolatry roots); focus on standing alone under the heavens before Hashem's throne, or the personal intensity of addressing the King of Kings directly. The episode blends halachic precision with inspirational stories, emphasizing prayer as intimate conversation with Hashem, sensitivity in relationships, and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth. Please submit your questions at askaway@torchweb.org_____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #80) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! It's officially the most wonderful time of the year— or is it? During the holidays, many of us are anything but cheerful. Niro has tips for dealing with grief, savoring key moments, knowing when to say "no," and even how to help kids (and adults) handle the influx of comparisons caused by social media and diverse holiday traditions. On Day 3 of Closing the Year with Gratitude and Grace, we shift into GROUND—the practice of finding your footing before the new year arrives. If your mind has been looping through what happened this year (or racing ahead into what's next), this episode will bring you back into your body with a calming, science-backed breathing practice called Coherent Breathing (5 seconds in, 5 seconds out). You'll learn why grounding works—how slow, steady breathing supports your nervous system, quiets mental noise, and helps you feel safe enough to settle. Through a gentle shoreline story and an embodied guided meditation, you'll release the urge to "figure it all out" and instead reconnect with what's steady, true, and already within you. Perfect for year-end reflection, emotional regulation, anxiety relief, and New Year intention-setting. In this episode of the Jewish Inspiration Podcast (Mussar Masterclass, Gate of Forgetfulness), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the trait of forgetfulness as a dangerous flaw in both this world and the next. Forgetfulness leads to broken commitments, forgotten debts (even a penny must be recorded), and lost opportunities for mitzvot. He advises creating systems/reminders (notes, ledgers) to compensate, avoiding borrowing if forgetfulness is chronic to prevent embarrassment or transgression, and reviewing affairs diligently.Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes forgetting good deeds (to avoid arrogance) while remembering sins (to repent), and forgetting wrongs done to us (to forgive) while recalling our own harms to seek forgiveness. He stresses constant remembrance of Hashem's presence (like a king holding a Torah scroll) and using forgetfulness positively—forgetting worldly distractions during prayer to connect simply with Hashem. The chapter concludes that mitzvot are lights removing darkness; forgetting them wastes chances to illuminate the world. True greatness comes from striving for more mitzvot, not resting on past achievements.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on June 9, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on December 30, 2025_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! In this powerful Thinking Talmudist episode on Gittin 55b, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the Talmud's explanation for the destruction of the Second Temple and Jerusalem: three tragic incidents rooted in people failing to consider consequences ("hardening the heart"). The primary story involves Kamtza and Bar Kamtza—a host mistakenly invites his enemy Bar Kamtza to a banquet, then publicly humiliates and ejects him despite offers to pay for the entire feast. The silent rabbis' inaction emboldens Bar Kamtza to slander the Jews to Caesar, leading to war and destruction.Rabbi Wolbe highlights the "wrongful humility" of Rabbi Zechariah ben Avkulas, who blocks both offering Caesar's blemished calf (fearing it sets a precedent) and killing Bar Kamtza (fearing misperception of penalty)—prioritizing technicalities over saving lives and the Temple. Parallel stories (rooster/hen destroying Tur Malka; carriage shaft destroying Betar) underscore senseless hatred and violence among Jews enabling Roman victory.Themes include: actions have reactions ("play stupid games, win stupid prizes"); silence in face of injustice is complicity; Jewish strength lies in words/persuasion, not violence; and baseless hatred (sinat chinam) remains the core reason for ongoing exile—urging self-reflection to merit redemption._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Many claim that they cannot learn Talmud because it is in ancient Aramaic or the concepts are too difficult. Well, no more excuses. In this podcast you will experience the refreshing and eye-opening teachings while gaining an amazing appreciation for the divine wisdom of the Torah and the depths of the Talmud._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by David & Susan MarbinRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios to a live audience on December 12, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on December 30, 2025_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thinking-talmudist-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1648951154Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0cZ7q9bGYSBYSPQfJvwgzmShare your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content._____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life. Sermon Summary: “Who Hijacked Christmas?” Christians Reclaimed Christmas The sermon explains that Christmas was not stolen from Christianity—Christians intentionally reclaimed it. Long before Christ, pagan cultures celebrated the winter solstice with fleshly festivals. Believers stepped into that moment and redirected the season to focus on God sending His Son. Rather than abandoning the season, the church redeemed it for truth. The Birth Matters Because the Resurrection Matters While the resurrection is the greatest event in history, the birth had to happen first. Christmas is celebrated not because of a date on the calendar, but because without the birth there is no cross, no empty tomb, and no salvation. Celebrating Christ's birth honors the beginning of God's redemptive plan. Defending the Virgin Birth A central emphasis of the sermon is the virgin birth. Jesus was not merely born—He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. This supernatural conception is essential to Christianity. If Jesus is not born of a virgin, He is not the Son of God and Christianity becomes just another religion. The church historically elevated Christmas to defend this truth when it came under attack. Jesus Is the Good Shepherd and God's Gift Through John 10 and the illustration of the candy cane, the sermon teaches that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep. The red represents His blood, the white His purity, and the shepherd's staff His care and protection. Jesus came to give abundant life and eternal life. Celebration Is Biblical Just as Israel celebrated God's miracles (such as Hanukkah), believers are encouraged to celebrate God's greatest miracle—Jesus Christ. Celebration does not equal compromise. Giving gifts reflects God's nature, because God loved and gave first. Materialism is a heart issue, not a Christmas issue. The Unseen Became Seen The sermon highlights that Christmas marks the moment when the unseen God became visible. Jesus stepped into human history, walked in our shoes, suffered, and redeemed humanity. His coming proves God did not abandon a fallen world but entered it to save it. Stand for Christ in Every Season Believers are called to stand boldly for Jesus—not just at Christmas, but in every moment of life. The world is imperfect, but Christians are light in darkness, using every opportunity to point others to Christ rather than withdrawing from culture. The Greatest Gift Still Offered The message concludes by reminding listeners that Jesus is still healing, delivering, restoring, and saving. He is the Anointed One who sets captives free. Christmas ultimately declares that God sent His Son as a ransom, offering forgiveness, healing, and eternal life to all who believe. This sermon explains that Christians did not lose Christmas—they redeemed it. While many cultures celebrated pagan festivals around the winter solstice, believers intentionally reclaimed the season to celebrate the greatest gift ever given: Jesus Christ. Though Jesus was likely not born in December, the timing does not diminish the meaning. The focus is on why we celebrate, not the calendar date. The message emphasizes that the birth of Jesus is essential, because without the birth there could be no death, resurrection, or salvation. Christmas matters because it defends the virgin birth, which confirms Jesus as the only begotten Son of God, distinct from every other religious leader. If the virgin birth is denied, Christianity collapses into just another religion. Using Scripture from Isaiah, Luke, and John, the sermon highlights Jesus as the Good Shepherd, the Anointed One (Messiah), and God's help sent into the world. His supernatural conception, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection reveal that the unseen God became seen in human form. The sermon challenges believers not to abandon Christmas because of materialism or cultural misuse. A fallen world will always distort good things, but that does not negate truth. Instead, Christians are called to stand up in every moment—holidays, workplaces, families, and culture—to proclaim Christ. The message closes with a call to endurance and bold faith, urging believers to let God heal their wounds, stop focusing on imperfections, and consistently testify that Jesus is the Son of God, born of a virgin, crucified, resurrected, and still saving today. Christmas is not about traditions—it is about celebrating God's greatest gift to humanity.
We know from both Jewish and secular sources, that 2,500 years ago the Babylonians led by Nevuchadnezar, besieged Jerusalem on this day. Two years later the Temple was destroyed. But what events led to this moment? And why was the path of the prophet Yirmiyahu's life so dangerous? As importantly how do we, in our days, feel a connection to the message and the narrative? 10th Teves is also designated as a day of mourning, for all those who do not know the date or the fate of their family's passing during the Holocaust, and this episode will feature the unusual story of a young child in the partisans. A powerful clip from Beginning Within's Rabbi Aryeh Weinstein examines a revealing exchange between Penn State University's Sam Richards and his students during a lecture asserting that "Palestine did not exist 200 years ago," a claim that stunned students who view it as their ancestral homeland. Rabbi Weinstein unpacks why historical literacy matters and how emotional narratives often replace facts in today's discourse. The program also features Australian television host Julia Hartley-Brewer in conversation with author and commentator Melanie Phillips, examining why the Gaza ceasefire continues to falter as Hamas refuses to disarm and what that means for Israel's security and regional stability. Mike then turns to New York City, focusing on growing security concerns for Jewish residents and institutions as mayor-elect Mandami prepares to take office. Throughout the episode, Mike underscores the urgent need for a proactive, positive campaign in support of Israel. He addresses and debunks accusations of genocide and apartheid, discusses the sharp rise in antisemitism in Australia following the Bondi Beach attack on Jews celebrating Chanukah, and raises alarms about the growing belief that the United States is a "Christian nation" and the troubling implications such thinking may hold for American Jews. In a lighter, seasonally fitting moment, he also reviews 11 classic Christmas songs written by Jewish composers. Thank you for listening, sharing and subscribing to The Third Opinion Podcast!

Yes, we're a little late for Christmas but that's because we were busy watching Michael Caine act his ass off in front of a bunch of Muppets. Jake, Holden, and Mike talk about their favorite Christmas movies and TV specials, and unlike the Chanukah episode there isn't time to list them all. And yes Die Hard gets it due because we're not having that argument and if you try we're throwing you off Nakatomi Plaza. Holden talks us through the qualifications of what makes something Christmasy and yes, sometimes it involves Jimmy Stewart trying to off himself and Phoebe Cates' dad burning alive in a chimney. You can join the community on Facebook. #Backtalk We asked about your favorite kind(s) of video games. You responded on the Facebook group and on the #backtalk channel of the Discord. 0:45:45 Just Plain Fun In no particular order, we picked five different kinds of games that always bring the fun. Trio (from Happy Camper) You never thought a memory-and-deduction game could be so much fun! This hits the table super quickly, as long as you have at least three players. The set-collection element is part of what keeps everyone engaged, along with the revealing of information to deduce where certain sets of cards are. It’s our family’s favorite game. Check out our review of Trio. Cabanga! (from Amigo / Hasbro) Now available as Snailed It! from Hasbro, this game always gets our table yelling as we cause players to take penalty cards. Play a card into a color area, and try to minimize the gap between that number and the other number in that color… or other players could throw out cards that fit in that gap and cause you to take penalties! Read our review of Cabanga! Super Mega Lucky Box (from Gamewright) This is the “most complicated” game on the list… but it’s basically bingo plus bonus combos that add some strategy. Fits well in either high-energy or low-energy situations. But always fun, and works at any player count, including solo. Check out our review of Super Mega Lucky Box. Green Team Wins (25th Century Games) Even people who don’t normally play games will (usually) enjoy this game. Ask a question; everyone tries to pick an answer to match with the most people around the table. Green Team Wins is unusual among party games. It works great among friends & family, but just as well with strangers as an icebreaker – or even combined groups where some people know each other well and others do not. It is our favorite party game. Watch our review of Green Team Wins – and the Green Team Wins: Holiday Party expansion. Spaceteam (from Stellar Factory) A high-energy “yell-y” game. We don’t play often, but it’s great if you’re ready for stress, a timer, and yelling. Cooperate to “fix your spaceship” by passing tool cards around the table to each player that needs them for specific tasks. As you fulfill tasks, discard them and find the spaceship parts. There are more cards in the mix that break expectations. And it feels so great when you can win! Find out more at PlaySpaceteam.com. Bonus: Red Letter, Yellow Letter (also from 25th Century Games) Another great party game, but a little lower energy than Green Team Wins. And since this is a game of “be the first to shout out an answer”, you can join mid-game. We find that it starts slowly, but then slowly warms up as people get used to the slowly-changing letters and “things”. And it always leaves us appreciating other players’ cool answers. Read our review of Red Letter, Yellow Letter. 0:58:30 New Backtalk Question We had a lot of games we played in the holiday week: what was YOUR board game of the week? This could be a gift you received for Chanukah or Christmas or whatever you celebrate, or it could have been something you got off the shelf of opportunity because you had some downtime. When I ask what your board game of the week is, what is it and why? Our son’s highlights are Hercules and The 12 Labors, and Slay the Spire (the boardgame). Anitra hopes that Paleo can finally get off the shelf of opportunity. Tell us on the #backtalk channel on our Discord, or in our Facebook community. Recorded on December 22: Mike and Laureen reflect on the eight days of Chanukah and what it means for the Jewish community to be a light in a darkening world. From 18,000 people gathering at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to massive Chanukah solidarity events in Amsterdam and controversy in London as the city's mayor attempted to halt a vigil for the Bondi victims — the week underscored both resilience and resistance. Amid rising threats, the FBI thwarted a New Year's Eve terror plot involving multiple bombings in the Los Angeles area, while Australian authorities intercepted seven men en route to Bondi Beach, highlighting the global scope of ongoing security concerns. This week's guest, Benham Ben Taleblu of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, warns that Iran and its threat to Israel are not getting the attention they deserve because attention is being diverted to Venezuela. The hosts also examine troubling moments of antisemitism at the Turning Point USA conference, where Ben Shapiro pushed back against the rhetoric, and unpack Tucker Carlson being named Antisemite of the Year by Stop Antisemitism — along with other notable figures and incidents making headlines.
