Defending the rights of religion and belief, freedom of speech and of the press, freedom to assemble, and the freedom to petition the government is the responsibility of every citizen. The interdependent nature of these freedoms not only requires every citizen to defend them generally and to defend them for those we agree with but, more importantly, to defend these rights for those with whom we disagree. Indeed, if all Americans, believers and non-believers, do not put the first freedoms first, we will not have a sustainable republic that will last.
