Hello Adventurers! Welcome to the Year of Our Yoshi-p Twenty Twenty Four. It's going to be an exciting year, this 2024! Not only it's the Lunar Year of the Dragon, it's ALSO the year of the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion: Dawntrail! And earlier in January we got a whole bunch of announcements made at the 2024 Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo, Japan. From the final CG teaser trailer, to Pictomancer, to hrothgals lion ladies, and even [REDACATED], if it was in the keynote, we are here to talk into microphones about them.Spoiler Levels: Hot! We may say it's medium to hot in the episode, but let's be honest. If you don't care all that much about spoilers, they are medium. If you do care, they are hot. Maybe not Blazin' Knock Your Butt Off... But you'll probably will want to wrap up the latest stuff in Endwalker before you hit play.OSMnotesThanks to Tobias for continuing to pitch hit edit the podcast for Anna, it has been a life saver. Since we almost just go in order of the keynote, we don't really have Time Cues this time. Just kick back, put the podcast on, and go grind some tomes. Tobis did do, however, is that he gave use what music is used in the episode. Which are The Carbuncle Chronicle Theme by Anna and DJ Inubito, "Battle on the Big Bridge" by The Black Mages, "Return to Oblivion (Scions & Sinners) by The Primals, "And Love You Shall Find" FFXIV Shadowbringers, and "Heartless (Chiptune)" by TESTS04.We also have YouTube Channels now! The starter set will release May 2024 for $59.99, and will include a Player Book, GM book, premade character sheets (Warrior, White Mage, Dragoon, and Black Mage), a set of dice (6d20 and 10d6), a rules summary, strategy guide, encounter map, character tokens, and ability markers. The recommended party size is 3-5, including a GM.Re-Logic. GamesRadar reports that the Terraria developer plans to donate $100k each to two open source engines (Godot and FNA), with $1,000 monthly donations to both moving forward. In Re-Logic's statement, they, “unequivocally condemn and reject the recent TOS/fee changes proposed by Unity and the underhanded way they were rolled out. The flippant manner with which years of trust cultivated by Unity were cast aside for yet another way to squeeze publishers, studios, and gamers is the saddest part. That this move was wholly unnecessary pushes things into the tragedy category - a cautionary tale the industry will not soon forget.”Unity. Bloomberg (Jason Schreier) reports that Unity might consider limiting total fees to 4% of a game's revenue, and suggests this limit would apply to customers making over $1M. Preferably fiction and/or fun/uplifting Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet; Tales from the Inner City by Shaun Tan; Take the Mic edited by Bethany C. Morrow; Snow in Love; Hope Nation edited by Rose Brock; The Radical Element edited by Jessica Spotswood. A gift for my brother who isn’t a big reader. He’s in college, loves soccer and video games, and hasn’t enjoyed a book since reading Holes in middle school. Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith; Slay by Brittany Morris; The Pros of Cons by Alison Cherry; Booked by Kwame Alexander; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; Warcross by Marie Lu; Feed by MT Anderson. New, contemporary, socially conscious, diverse. YA dealing with survivors of sexual abuse/pedophilia/other childhood trauma: some of my favorites that I’ve read are Sadie, Girl in Pieces, Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Speak. Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson; Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough; The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith; Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kuehn; How Dare the Sun Rise by Sandra Uwiringyimana; Wrecked by Maria Padian; Infandous by Elana K. Arnold; In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. A YA book to get my friend who doesn’t really read….p.s. she really likes Disney. Disney’s Twisted Tales; Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige; Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo; Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee. One of my high school students likes mysteries and fantasy novels, but doesn’t like any “kissing” (i.e. lots of romance or a focus on a relationship). What suggestions could I give her? Goldie Vance: The Hotel Whodunit by Lilliam Rivera; Endangered by Lamar Giles; Jennifer Lynn Barnes; Karen M. McManus; Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn. A book for my 16 year old nephew who is a very particular reader. Used to love Rick Riordan but has moved on. Beyond Riordan, the only books I’ve sent him that he has actually called begging for the sequels is Scythe. He likes Agatha Christie “because it makes him think” (to figure out what is going on). I’ve tried AS King and Going Bovine, but have not gotten a reaction and all the fantasy tried and trues. Would love an idea from you! Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore; The Future will be BS-free by Will McIntosh; The Lines We Cross by Randa Abdel-Fattah; Warcross and Legend by Marie Lu. A contemporary with some magic and some romance, but the story does not center grief. Now and When by Sara Bennett Wealer; Displacement by Kiku Hughes; Lobizona by Romina Garber. I am looking for a fantasy novel with romance that ideally is part of an almost finished or finished series. I have already read many of the popular ones, so I guess I am looking for those that were a bit more under the radar. I have read/started the Folk of the Air Series, A Court of Thorns and Roses Series, Red Queen Series, all of Cassandra Clare, etc. and loved them all! Looking for something in that realm. Blythewood by Carol Goodman; Lost Voices by Sarah Porter; The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd; Brooklyn Brujas by Zoraida Cordova. Warm fuzzy story about family (chosen, biological, adopted, whatever) with winter holiday(s) (not necessarily Christmas, but Christmas ok) as a backdrop and a happy ending. Something wintery and hopeful. (At least something that leaves the reader with some hope.) I like a variety of things. Some writers whose work I’ve enjoyed: Katie Henry, Karen McManus, Tomi Adeyemi, Jenny Han, Nina LaCour, and too many names to list. A few books I’ve read and enjoyed because of this podcast: Agnes at the End of the World, We Are the Perfect Girl, and Orpheus Girl. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston; The Kid Table by Andrea Seigel; The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody. A feminist book like Rules for Being a Girl. Girls Like Us by Randi Pink; The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann; Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina; Watch Us Rise by Renee Watson and Ellen Hagan. Books for a 13 year-old. She loves the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare and anything written by Rick Riordan. Recently, I loaned her my copy of With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo (one of my favorite YA authors ever) and she loved it. I’d really like to give her books in a genre she loves and one that will expand her reading material. Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert; New Kid/Class Act by Jerry Craft; Inventing Victoria by Tonya Bolden; Akata Witch/Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. Something that will make me laugh, but also teach me something. The Go-Between by Veronica Chambers; Cherry by Lindsey Rosin; Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan; We Are The Perfect Girl by Ariel Kaplan. I’m looking for at book for my niece (18 years old). She is not an avid reader out side required reading in school. She’s not that into fantasy and Sci fi, she likes contemporary fiction better. She might like a short story collection because 40 pages is not as daunting as 350 pages (or more if it’s a series) for a story. Books she had liked recently: They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera and Broken Things by Lauren Oliver. Try Margarita Engle, Nikki Grimes, Stephanie Hemphill, Kwame Alexander as an alternative to short stories but still with a lot of white space, as it may be less intimidating; Toil and Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe; Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. I’m interested in spooky tales, thrillers, science fiction, and non-WWII fiction. No dystopias or urban fantasy, please! The most important thing to me as an aromantic asexual person is that’s there’s no significant romantic element. I don’t want the main character to have any romantic partners or to spend several pages daydreaming about their crush(es). Thanks! Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke; Dread Nation by Justina Ireland; Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham; The Blood Confession by Alisa M. Libby; The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupecho; Jackaby by William Ritter; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour. A book for my 19 year old sister who loves Wilder Girls and The Poet X. She is a fan of feminism, horror, and queerness in books. The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters; Mary’s Monster by Lita Judge; The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; We Are The Wildcats by Siobhan Vivian; The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. A book for my daughter. She recently told me that she is gay. I want to show her how much I love her and accept her. She loves graphic novels and has read many of the most popular ones featuring same sex relationships. Everything Noelle Stevenson! Lumberjanes, Nimona, The Fire Never Goes Out; Queer: A Graphic History by Meg John Barker and Julia Scheele; Skim by Mariko Tamaki; Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu; Kiss Number 8 by Colleen AF Venable and Ellen T. Crenshaw; Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and Shae Bragl. Something heavily folklore-based (Maggie Stiefvater or higher level of “heavily”) and LGBTQ+ please? European and Asian folklore are my favorite but I’ll be happy to dive into any other as well. Anna-Marie McLemore; A Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Elsie Chapman and Ellen Oh; Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco; A Curse of Roses by Diana Pinguicha; Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao; Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardost. A fantasy or science fiction novel, preferably action-packed. Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger; The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline; Cut Off by Adrianne Finley; Orleans by Sherri L. Smith. An awesome ghost story. The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco; Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn; Horrid by Katrina Leno; The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour; Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby; Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. School for Good & Evil read-alikes for 14-year-old reluctant reader. Thanks! Carry On by Rainbow Rowell; The Irregular at Magic High School manga series by Tsutomu Sato; The Black Mage by Daniel Howard Barnes; Supermutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki; A Blade so Black by LL McKinney; Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim; Liz Braswell’s Twisted Fairy Tales series; Melissa Albert’s The Hazel Wood. Geek to Geek Podcast

In This Episode: In the beforetime, the long, long ago (season 3), we covered tabletop RPGs. It's 2019, things have changed somewhat, and we wanted to revisit the topic. Beej has taken up playing Dungeons & Dragons with a local group, mainly with the Adventurer's League. Basically, the AL is the Wizard's sanctioned D&D league where rewards travel over between everywhere, and no matter where you go, you can find a table to play at. It's a really interesting idea, and it lets newcomers to the game find a game immediately and anywhere. It sure helped Beej. While Void hasn't really dug into playing tabletop RPGs again, it's been on his mind a lot. He still listens to The Adventure Zone podcast, and it makes him want to play more and more. And since his kids are getting older, they can do more as a family. Which fits directly in with how much he loves TAZ. He mentions other actual-play podcasts, and he recommends specifically Friends at the Table. Beej has got to try this one sometime. Scheduling is definitely the hardest part of playing tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. Beej wants to play Star Wars: Edge of the Empire more, but the hard part is finding time when everyone's schedules work together. Void Void is trying to find the right approach to playing tabletop RPGs with his kids. They've made D&D characters and have all the books needed to get started. The trouble is taking that first step. Tabletop RPGs Overall? One word: intimidated. Two words: intimated and overwhelmed. Okay, that's three, but you get it. Void feels intimidated to start because it requires energy and time that he's not sure he has enough of right now. For Beej, the whole thing is kind of overwhelming. He has a lot of stuff going on with family and friends this time of year, has a new foster doggo, so even taking that one extra night for a few hours on a weekly basis is hard to do. The gaming itself is super fun, though, and the state of tabletop RPGs has really never been better. Someday, we'll get a chance to do that Geek to Geek playcast that we've talked about for years. Someday. Weekly Geekery Beej Spider-Man: Far From Home Just as good the second time. Less wow, but get to see a lot more of the nuance in characters and hidden things. Into the Spider-verse BluRay Still as good as I remember Comparing it to Far From Home is Apples and Oranges The colors, oh the colors! I think my Halloween costume is going to be Janky Old Broke Hobo Spider-Man Spider-Man PS4 The story is so good. I had forgotten how great the story was until I went back. New costumes from Far From Home Can’t wait for DLC Void No FFV FJF update I realized that I’m stalling out because in past years I played a lot over my lunch breaks at work I’m not really taking lunch breaks right now, so… yeah.  I’m stalled. I typically work 10 hours without really taking a break. Dr. Mario World Very much a mobile game Pills fall up instead of down, but outside of that… it’s basically Dr. Mario Dr. Luigi, Dr. Peach, Dr. Bowser, Medical Assistants like Goombas… I’m feeling very suspect of these people being properly credentialed. Stayability?  Not really, I’m already done with it The puzzles feel really punitive after level 20 or so It feels like they made them in a way that almost requires items so that you have to pay them more money to keep making progress. This is the worst monetization I’ve ever seen in a Nintendo game. FF Remasters FFIX Started playing FFIX with my kids! The intro is really good and does a lot of interesting things with jumping back and forth between characters while setting the scene and telling an interesting story I definitely will be playing more of this with my kids This is still my favorite FF game FFX-2 Rougher around the edges than I remembered Maybe because it’s an asset reuse game? It also does some things with letting you choose the order you experience the story which is interesting but might actually make a weaker story Wow, we’ve come a long way with animation and VO since PS2 The class & combat system is super interesting. This is the only reason I’m still playing around with FFX-2 and didn’t hard bounce off of the game So many classes! I’m maybe 2 hours into the game and have Gunner, Warrior, Thief, Singer, festivalist?, Black Mage, and White Mage You’re constantly picking up more The dress sphere system for swapping jobs on the fly is so cool Garment grid lets you lay them out in different patterns Example: think of a square with a node at each corner.  You can move along the lines of the square between nodes (jobs) but you can’t jump from one corner to the other corner without traveling through the in-between nodes That’s basically how garment grids work but with lots of crazy shapes. I’ve beaten this game once… But If I end up playing more of this game right now it will be for the job system and combat system It will not be for the story FFX I wanted to see if the storytelling, animation, and VO felt as rough in FFX as it does in FFX-2. It doesn’t.  FFX feels a lot better all around. I beat this game fairly recently so I’m probably not going to dig in very deep right now, but I’m having fun playing through the intro MCU Phase 1 with the kids Finished! Iron Man 1 is one of the least kid-friendly MCU movies (skip the first 20-30 minutes until he’s leaving the cave) Thor 1 was better than I remembered The first Avengers movie is still really good My kids are excited to watch all the MCU movies and catch-up! Spotlight: Nobuo Uematsu, Part Two

Ultima Final Fantasy | The Ultimate Final Fantasy Podcast

This week, we continue with our Spotlight on Nobuo Uematsu. Enjoy!   PART II   Last week we looked at the beginnings of Nobuo Uematsu’s career, from being hired at Square Co. to his first two masterpieces that we can agree on with his soundtracks of FF4 and FF6. As a reminder, this is a special kind of Spotlight, one where you sit back, and enjoy the music.   Let’s continue from 1995. Chrono Trigger, the one fucking game that we need to play but can’t because of the official order of things, was a gigantic project for Square, and is often cited with FF6 as the greatest RPG game ever. Most of the music was composed by veteran composer Yasunori Mitsuda, but Nobuo would leave his mark on the classic game as well, composing 8 of the tracks for the game. Here’s the haunting theme “Silent Light”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T4WB2zfmps   No, no no no. Silent LIGHT. Not Silent night… Jesus.. That was Josef Mohr.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ccv48ZiX1I&index=10&list=PLTHOcnhIuPOvEJd8WJI6kaJbQG0NeKtaY   1996 would be kind-of a dud year for Uematsu. The little known game “Dynami Tracer” would be his only solo work in 1996, and it’s definitely not one of his better soundtracks… But we wouldn’t wanna keep you wanting! Here’s a little piece called...music factory.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-T4JU01UoA&list=PL70567EDAFF96BD39&index=3   We’re not gonna even bother with his next work, contributing to the album for Front Mission: Gun Hazard with a half a billion of other Square composers. His next game was 1997’s fucking Final Fantasy 7. We can’t give you just one. Here’s his band, the black mages’ version of perhaps the most popular FF7 song One Winged Angel:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHzEaKFqboI   One of the most beautiful pieces from the game, Aerith’s theme, taking a cue from Terra’s theme in the last game, here’s an orchestral version of that song:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU0TcnsLop8   We can’t forget Kaleb’s favorite. This is Cosmo Canyon.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBk58XDx5gY   His next game would be that of FInal Fantasy 8. Nobuo has stated that with 8’s soundtrack, he worked hard to reflect the charcter’s emotions at certain parts of the game. It would be one of the more successful FF soundtracks with what is now as of 2016 the second-biggest video game music single ever, Faye Wong’s “Eyes on Me” selling over 500,000 copies.   Now… Final Fantasy VIII… This is a tough one because neither of us really care for the soundtrack of FF8. There’s something about the tone of the instrumentation and the terrible engrish lyrics of “eyes on me” that leaves us with a bad taste in our mouths, but no one can deny the power of the opener, Liberi Fatali!!!!   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4MMhY4RyxQ   Eh, fuck it, we’ll give you “Eyes on Me”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANw53vQFJeM   Along this stream of Final Fantasy games, the often-underappreciated Final Fantasy IX would follow. FF9 would take a departure from the previous games with the soundtrack offering a more medieval scottish highlands inspired milieu. Nobuo would do the entire 160 tracks on his own for this game. Here’s one of them, “The Place I’ll return to someday”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OK29BoxomE   We can’t forget “Rose of May”...   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKw3eJV6XFM   Along with these classic pieces, Nobuo wrote yet another J-pop single to go with the game. This the greatest cover of “Melodies of Life” ever made:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wffHREGnTiA   The same year as FF9, the year 2000, would be Nobuo’s first foray into feature films, where he would compose the main theme for the animated film “Ah! My Goddess: The Movie”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2VTbUCek8E   The first FInal Fantasy game without a soundtrack composed entirely by Uematsu himself would be the PS2 smash hit…. You guessed it! Final Fantasy X. One would guess that he may have been a bit burned out from FF9. In the end Nobuo ended up composing 51 of the game’s 89 tracks, including the Joe favorite “To Zanarkand”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3eQuEm4R10   One of the most commonly performed songs by The Black Mages is the incredibly zany “Fight with Seymour”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87e5qQnVerI   Can’t forget a Kaleb favorite, “Auron’s Theme”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaAhtI1_HU8 Oh, and one of the decent theme songs for a Final Fantasy, probably because it wasn’t awkwardly forced into the english language, here’s “Suteki Da Ne”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikunVjaG2hw   Final Fantasy XI, despite the arguments between Kaleb and I on whether or not he composed the soundtrack for the game, was composed in large part by him. NOT THE EXPANSIONS, but the original release. Here’s one of his tracks, “Ronfaure”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ-ZDsFUEP8   Another insanely cool track from FF11 from Uematsu is “Despair”   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joxCId9SvAU   ...And one of the best-ever FF songs, one that Joe actually likes. This is the epic “Distant Worlds”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzbzAXKCn-Q   Between 2003 and 2004, Uematsu seems to have been put on the backburner a little big, scoring for minor games like Hanjuku Hero Tai 3D and Egg Monster Hero, and only contributing one track for Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced during that time… Here’s the Main Theme:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqGNeqc26go   In 2004 Square veteran Hironobu Sakaguchi famously quit Square-Enix to create Mistwalker Studios, and in a way Nobuo left with him. Wanting to work on his live performances, his band the black mages, and seeking other opportunities creatively, Nobuo decided he was going to forge ahead as an independant contracter, and since that departure he’s returned to the FF series 3 times. For the soundtrack of Advent Children he built on his previous themes from FFVII, with FF12 he gave us another pop song I really don’t have the stomach for right now, and with FFXIV… Well, despite creating a lot of tracks for the original release, A Realm Reborn got rid of much of the original music from FF14. His biggest recent contribution to the FF series is probably the song “Answers” from the tragic end of the original game.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMhcyzQ7mKw   Nobuo Uematsu has gone on primarily to work with his old friend “The Gooch” on the games Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. All of which feature great soundtracks.  Here’s one from Blue Dragon, titled Waterside   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAzwlwkcFaU   And here’s another from his non-Square Work. Here’s the terrifying Howl of the Departed from Lost Odyssey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmCp20CW-Pw   Nobuo Uematsu's touch can be felt upon the whole series. Without him FInal Fantasy wouldn't be the same, and would be worse off for it. Nobuo Currently works hard at his live performances and various little composing projects for games and movies that he decides to work on. He’s doing so much, we can’t even cover it in a two-parter, but it seems he won’t be doing a full FF soundtrack anytime soon We are grateful to him and his work. What say we close with a gorgeous piece from “The Last Story” and close the book on our Spotlight of Nobuo Uematsu? This is “Lost Time”:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agAlOe0PoxY

When The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast isn't unloading on the latest geek news and happenings, we're diving deep into the super-specific with listener-requested discussions and interviews. This episode happens to be both of those things! This day marks the 15th anniversary of one of the most influential pieces of Internet literature from the early days of webcomics: 8-Bit Theater. A parody of all things beautiful and horrible about RPGs both on console and tabletop, this series chronicled the adventures of the so-called "Light Warriors" and trolled audiences for nine years with continual anti-climaxes. Not only is it a work of great geeky significance, it's also one near and dear to Nerdy Show's heart as it's the brainchild of one of our founding hosts: Brian Clevinger. Join Cap, Trench, Tony, Brandon as they dig up Brian's sordid, pixelated past. Learn how to quit college in style and stretch a dumb joke out for nearly a decade! Is Fighter a secret genius, or a massive tool? What's up with Black Mage's face? These questions might be answered! By listener request we also go deep into narrative RPG design theory and how the old ways of tabletop number crunching should give way to storytelling. Returning from a podcast that didn't get recorded and another shopping trip in town, our heroes resume their investigation of the Temple of Probably No Princess But We're Here Anyhow. Michael "PANC the Fighter" Ridgaway, Michael "ALPH the Red Mage" Gray, Joseph "JOEV the White Mage" Martin, and Anna "LITA the Black Mage" Bryniarski find more baddies to slice and dice (it's funny, because they're rolling dice) as Nathaniel "the GM" Hoover barely holds things together. Here's what you can expect from this installment, which is pretty much the same as the one you missed, but with different monsters: - The GM and the players have a disagreement about what exactly constitutes a pony - The PANC song - The players judge on the basis of color, in a completely non-racist way - The reality of targeting enemies in a game where terrain and distances are irrelevant - Imps suffering existential crises The adventure continues here!

Having arrived in Coneria, accepted their quest to rescue the kidnapped princess, gotten themselves decked out with equipment, dilly-dallied around town, and survived their first combat encounter, our four heroes press on toward the Temple of Friends Fiends. Listen to the horrifying creativity of Michael “PANC the Fighter” Ridgaway, the hazardously nonspecific battle commands of Michael “ALPH the Red Mage” Gray, the gentle breeziness of Joseph “JOEV the White Mage” Martin, and the frequent minor pokings of Anna “LITA the Black Mage” Bryniarski as Nathaniel "the GM" Hoover puts one monster after another between them and the pancakes they were promised. Here's what to expect from this battle-tastic second installment: - The Black Mage isn't exactly sure how to spell or pronounce her own name - We earn our NSFW ratings - The GM doesn't know what a brain is - Basically everybody participates in a brief, impromptu, and completely unorganized a cappella jam session - There is clearly something wrong with the people of Coneria - A skeleton clown - The party seems surprisingly calm when discovering something that IS CLEARLY DESIGNED TO KILL EVERYONE WHY AREN'T YOU RUNNING AWAY The adventure continues here!

Following in the podsteps of the Maid RPGcast and Crystalis D&Dcast before it, I humbly present to you the Final Fantasy RPGcast, GameCola's third foray into the realm of podcasted videogame-themed tabletop role-playing games. The story and game mechanics of the original NES Final Fantasy were adapted by Nathaniel "Guy Who's Writing This Post" Hoover to create an adventure so authentic that you'll swear we really are playing the original NES Final Fantasy, up until the part where the players open their mouths and turn it into a quest for pancakes. Starring in this edition are Michael "PANC the Fighter" Ridgaway, Michael "ALPH the Red Mage" Gray, Joseph "JOEV the White Mage" Martin, and Anna "LITA the Black Mage" Bryniarski. Here's a small sampling of what to expect in this first installment of their hungry, hungry heroics: - Bruce - The realization that the towns and castles of Final Fantasy are pretty terrible when you think about them too hard - Shopping! I swear this is more interesting than it sounds. - The players ignore the main quest to fabricate a subplot about treasury thieves, which the GM just kinda goes along with - A quick lesson in Conerian economics, where indiscriminate murder is the lifeblood of the economy - Discussions of defacing corpses for charity - We are horrible people The adventure begins here!

America's most widely celebrated holiday, the Superbowl, has come and gone. While all of us over here in the Bay Area are mourning, Scott and I have our minds tuned to video games - well, sort of. Specifically, inspired by an article from Tim Rogers, we're discussing the similarities between American Football and Final Fantasy Tactics. Is Tom Brady a White Mage or a Black Mage? And what's a safety called in JRPGs? Join us this week on the EXP Podcast while we chat about fandom, e-sports, and more. As always, share your thoughts in the comments below and be sure to check out Tim's original article in the show notes!
