A big chunk of the self-help and wellness industry runs on some core messages: you are not good enough and you need to be fixed, improved, and optimized. We disagree and hope this element of recreation (and re-creation) helps you brush off some of those false messages and return to what is already good and resilient in you.  This is also one of the three months per year (April, August, and December), where we tap more into our rest and activity cycles by doing less and nourishing more. With that in mind, we'll play some encore episodes that will help you tap into play, rest, and nourish. We'll be back September 1 with new episodes!   About: The Joy Lab Podcast is an Ambie-nominated podcast that blends science and soul to help you cope better with stress, anxiety, and depression. It's hosted by integrative psychiatrist Dr. Henry Emmons and holistic mental health researcher Dr. Aimee Prasek. The podcast is best paired with the Joy Lab Program (get your 7-day free trial!). Bonus: spread some joy and keep this podcast ad-free by donating (Joy Lab is powered by the nonprofit Pathways North and your donations are tax-deductible).    Listen & follow the Joy Lab Podcast on your favorite listening app:  Spotify | Apple | YouTube   Full transcript here   Sources and Notes for our Element of Confidence: Joy Lab Program: Take the next leap in your wellbeing journey with step-by-step practices to help you build and maintain the elements of joy in your life. Start your 7-day free trial now. A: Because we've been sold the message that rest is laziness and optimization is a moral win. This episode names that cultural conditioning directly, explains the biological necessity of rest and activity cycles, and reframes play as a genuine act of wellness and even resistance.   Q: What does play actually look like for adults and why does it matter for mental health? A: This episode introduces phantasmagoria, flow, and self-forgetfulness as frameworks for understanding why play is not optional. Play helps dissolves self-monitoring, reduces stress, builds resilience and empathy, and reconnects us to intrinsic motivation. One practical strategy is to play for just two minutes per day, no devices, doing something that was fun when you were a kid.   Key moments: [00:00] Welcome to the Element of Recreation — and the shift to "re-creation," with the hyphen intentional [00:30] Joy Lab's ease-phase rhythm: August, December, April — doing less, nourishing more, honoring cycles of rest and activity [01:30] Henry: we treat bodies and minds like machines that should run at peak capacity all the time [02:00] Nature runs on rhythms — seasons, tides, circadian cycles, hormone cycles — and so do we [03:30] We were taught that resting is laziness, that not optimizing is wasting time — and it's exhausting and eventually counterproductive [04:00] When we honor natural rhythms and take real breaks, energy and creativity return [05:00] Re-creation as coming back to our foundation — no additional fixes needed; goodness is already here [05:30] The wellness industry's relentless optimization is built on a "tiny blueprint" — a marketable version of you designed to sell products. It only works if you believe you're a product, not a person [07:00] Henry: the trillion-dollar self-help industry thrives on one message — you are not good enough [07:30] The impossible standard: lose weight but have you optimized your BMI? Improve habits but have you perfected your sleep routine? [08:00] Rooted in shame and self-rejection — the core message being "you're not okay as you are"  [09:30] Roger Abrahams: we've turned building a self into a kind of religion — self-possession, self-fashioning, self-expression as sacred moral acts [11:00] Henry: authentic self-creation vs. creating a self for external approval — the difference that matters [12:00] For marginalized communities, the pull to conform is especially strong — stepping back from optimization as an act of resistance [13:30] Aimee introduces phantasmagoria — a concept from play researcher Dr. Brian Sutton-Smith [14:00] How kids play in wild, imaginative, sometimes dark ways — and why it's usually normal, not a red flag [17:30] Why kids do this: to deconstruct reality, work through feelings, explore what's unfair or scary in a complex world [18:00] Sutton-Smith and Derrida: if the world is a text, play is our response — we are both audience and co-author [18:30] Phantasmagoria as processing strategy: supports psychological resilience, empathy, curiosity, critical thinking [19:30] Dr. Fred Donaldson: "Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play, children learn how to learn." [20:00] Adults do the same — we've licensed phantasmagoria into tiny socially acceptable pockets: Halloween, Burning Man, horror movies, fandom [20:30] When play is so rare, those pockets can get extreme — we need to bring play back into daily life in healthy amounts [21:00] Carl Jung: "The small child is still around and possesses a creative life which I lack, but how can I make my way to it?" [22:00] Play ideas: gardening, LARPing, woodworking, art, acting, board games, writing, cooking, music, sports with less attachment to winning [22:30] Starting question: what's one way of playing from your childhood that if you tried for two minutes today would offer some recreation? [23:30] Henry on what happens when we become adults: we lose permission to play without purpose or imagine without constraints [24:00] The playful mind is resourceful — in play, we access parts of the brain that don't activate during striving or self-judgment — not a waste of time; accessing our deepest capacities  [26:00] Re-creation is mostly social — not solitary self-optimization but self-forgetfulness and connecting [26:30] Self-forgetfulness (Ep. 270): looking up from negative preoccupation with self, going beyond ourselves [ADD LINK] [27:00] Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's flow: loss of self-consciousness, forgetfulness of other realities — the adult version of play [27:30] Playfulness research on adults: higher purpose in life, positive relations, resilience, more positive emotions — even when adults are forced to play [28:30] The practice: two minutes per day, no devices, authoring your own experience [29:00] Then make it a little more social: invite a friend, shoot baskets in a public park, join a club [31:30] Henry: what happens when you're truly at play — you stop thinking about yourself; the inner critic quiets, anxiety settles, you're just present   [35:00] Check in after playing: how do you feel emotionally, cognitively, physically? Identify what nourishes you [35:30] This month: replay of key past episodes; Joy Lab Program members get weekly short visualization and meditation experiments [36:00] Closing wisdom from Carl Jung: "The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect, but by the play instinct..."    Like and follow Joy Lab on Socials:  Instagram Linkedin Facebook YouTube   Please remember that this content is for informational and educational purposes only. PT 658 - Mareesa Stertz – Sphinx Gate Beyond Burning Man: Psychedelic Healing Without Psychedelics

My friend Mareesa joins us again on PT to discuss art, integration, psychedelic experiences without drugs, the heros journey and her smaller sphinxes that may start touring the country! Enjoy! Here are some machine generated shownotes if you find them useful! Show Notes Sphinx Gate began as a pair of monumental 34-foot sculptures at Burning Man. Now, Mareesa Stertz and her collaborators are developing smaller, portable versions that could bring the experience to festivals, conferences, and communities around the country. The installation is designed as a sober rite of passage—one that draws on psychedelic experience without requiring anyone to take a drug. Participants move through four portals centered on the mind, body, heart, and destiny. Along the way, they are invited to identify a recurring personal story, notice how it lives in the body, meet it with greater compassion, and consider what might exist beyond it. Mareesa and Joe explore how the project draws from the Hero's Journey, Carl Jung's concept of individuation, participatory art, ritual, somatic awareness, and the riddles traditionally associated with the sphinx. They also discuss the importance of community in psychedelic integration, the stories and inherited beliefs that disrupt self-trust, and why healing is rarely the result of one dramatic experience. The conversation expands into peer support, the Global Psychedelic Society, the risks of presenting psychedelics as a quick fix, and the challenge of remaining fully human as artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in everyday life.

In this episode of Slowmade, I'm talking with Los Angeles jewelry artist Tzipora Hoynik.Tzipora has been making and selling jewelry for around forty years, but her creative life began long before that. As a little girl, she told her father she wanted to be an artist, even though she didn't yet know exactly what that meant. Over the years, that pull toward making has taken many forms, from drawing and painting to glass blowing, ceramics, weaving, beads, metalsmithing, and eventually the bold, colorful, deeply textured jewelry she creates today.Tzipora's work begins with stones. Color is her starting point, and her pieces often feel layered with pattern, texture, movement, and embellishment. In our conversation, she shares how gemstones guide her designs, why she doesn't like to leave a surface blank, and how her love of color continues to keep the work exciting after so many years. We also talk about the evolution of a long creative career, including her early years making beaded jewelry, her time doing wholesale shows, and the moment production work started to feel more like work than play. Tzipora now focuses mostly on one-of-a-kind pieces, allowing the stones, the process, and her own instincts to lead.Along the way, we talk about her Los Angeles studio, her very practical relationship with tools, her longtime connection to Burning Man, the special jewelry pieces she has made for that community, and her Warrior Women series, a design she returned to after many years and reimagined with more detail, strength, and meaning. This conversation is also about what it means to keep creating over the long arc of a life. Tzipora talks about the need to make things as something deeply innate, something that feeds her and feels woven into who she is. Even after decades of working as an artist, she still finds joy in coming into the studio, playing with stones, and seeing what wants to become. We talk about creative devotion, staying true to your own voice, selling work through Instagram and shows, working with collectors, the reality of pricing handmade jewelry, and why the value of a piece is never only about the materials. It also carries the years of experience, the choices, the eye, the hands, and the voice of the artist who made it.If you've ever wondered what it looks like to build a life around making, not for a season, but for decades, I think you'll love this conversation with Tzipora.Follow Tzipora...Tzipora on Instagram: @opalgirlTzipora's Website: spiraljewelry.etsy.comLove the Podcast?Support an episode: Click here to learn more!Without your support I couldn't continue the Slowmade Podcast. Kevin Kelly has spent over 30 years experiencing the edge of new technology: from the earliest days of the internet to the first years of Burning Man. But he's always treated the frontier as a place to visit, not somewhere to live. It's partially how he's been able to stay grounded through tech's various hype cycles. As founding executive editor of Wired and author of The Inevitable, Kelly spends as much time analyzing the latest in AI as he does reading about significant moments in history. It's a discipline he traces back to his work with the Long Now Foundation, which he cofounded to encourage long-term thinking, reaching from the last 10,000 years to the next. On this week's AI & I, Dan Shipper revisits his conversation with Kelly. They get into why historians can be the best futurists, and how our bid to understand what intelligence is has parallels with early scientists' attempts to figure out electricity. Kelly also describes the joy he found in creating an AI-generated saga featuring Leonardo Da Vinci, Christopher Columbus, and Martin Luther—one that will only ever be read and enjoyed by him.If you found this episode interesting, please like, subscribe, comment, and share! To hear more from Dan Shipper:Subscribe to Every: https://every.to/subscribeFollow him on X: https://twitter.com/danshipperTimestamps for YouTube:0:00 Start 0:50 Introduction 1:10 Why Dan and Kelly love Annie Dillard 12:52 How to predict the future like Kelly16:10 What the history of electricity can teach us about AI 20:13 How Kelly thinks about the nature of intelligence 25:44 Kelly's advice on discovering your competitive advantage 29:33 How Kelly assembled a bench of star writers for Wired 34:43 How Kelly used ChatGPT to co-create a book 39:12 Using AI as a mirror for your mind 43:43 What Kelly learned from betting on VR in the 1980sLinks to resources mentioned in the episode:Kevin Kelly on X: https://twitter.com/kevin2kellyThe Inevitable by Kevin Kelly: https://www.amazon.com/Inevitable-Understanding-Technological-Forces-Future/dp/0525428089Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard: https://www.amazon.com/Pilgrim-Tinker-Harper-Perennial-Classics/dp/00612333231,000 True Fans by Kevin Kelly: https://www.amazon.com/1000-True-Fans-Kellys-Simple-ebook/dp/B01N9P9O4GFull episode transcript: https://every.to/podcast/transcript-be243312-ea22-4193-8c56-b9cd45a79a87

Vadim Kruglov: “Burning Man Murder”丨MURDERISH Ep. 215

Every August, a city of 70,000 rises from the desolate salt desert of northwest Nevada. No money, no corporate sponsors, no permanent walls. Its citizens live by a strict code: Radical inclusion. Decommodification. Leave no trace. The Burning Man Project is built on the premise that humanity, when stripped of societal rules, will default to love and art. But that isn't always the case. Saturday night. August 30th, 2025. Inside a red-and-white canvas tent on the festival's fringes, 37-year-old Vadim Kruglov is trapped. A heavy kitchen knife strikes. A single, fatal jab to the throat. Vadim's first-ever Burning Man …would be his last. At 9:15 p.m., a woman in a red dress flagged down one of the sheriff department's roaming patrols. Panicked and out-of-breath, she managed to get out a few words: “There is a man bleeding out in my tent. He might be dead. I won't touch him.” By morning, one of the guiding principles of Burning Man, leave no trace, proved to be investigators' worst nightmare. The crime scene, the witnesses, and the killer didn't just scatter in the wind, the entire city vanished from the face of the Earth. Follow Jami @JamiOnAir on Instagram and TikTok. Burning Man turns 40 this year, and its changed dramatically since the first event in San Francisco. The first gathering drew a couple dozen people who gathered to burn an 8-foot wooden effigy at Baker Beach to celebrate the summer solstice. Four decades later, it's a multi-million dollar operation that every August draws more than 70 thousand people to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. A new HBO documentary called “The Man Will Burn” looks at the staying power of the massive pop-up commune and the struggles to maintain its founding values. We'll talk with the directors and one of the producers for the series. Laten we beginnen… Welkom Lara! [00:01:58] Erno Hannink: Waarom?

July isn't just Disability Pride Month, it's also the time when lots of Bay Area folks are preparing to go to the festival in Nevada's Black Rock desert: Burning man. And one group that goes each year exists at the intersection of disability advocacy and the values that guide the gathering. The Burner community is guided by what they call “The 10 Principles.” One of those principles is radical inclusion. But what does that mean for people with disabilities? Next, we revisit a story from an episode of the podcast the Intersection that explores what disability advocacy looks like in the desert.

Tangentially Speaking with Christopher Ryan

Dave has been around. He spent eight years in the navy, lived in Bali for a while, led hundreds of intimacy workshops, explored non-monogamous relationships and intentional communities, been to Burning Man five times, studied with various gurus and legit teachers, and doesn't take any of it (including himself) too seriously. He writes self-reflective songs and sings them from the heart. He leans into his fears and nurtures vulnerability in himself and others. He's on a path, in other words. My kinda guy. The debut of ‘Playa Dust in My Soul' made Sarah Marshall a newly minted author late in the seventh decade of her life. The shortcomings of her first draft initiated a writer's journey that took over twenty years to learn how to carve a story from a mountain of information. As a Burning Man village leader for over twenty years, Sarah has witnessed firsthand how temporary communities catalyze permanent transformation. As a trans woman she had the experience of the event's grace in welcoming her in from outsider to enthusiastic participant. As a business professional with many past lives (military, martial artist, firefighter, engineer, adventurist, spiritual seeker, community activist), she bring lived experience to stories about reinvention and what happens when broken people find belonging in one of the most intense environments on earth. The novel explores second chances, radical acceptance, and the crucible of transformation that is the playa. This episode, like all episodes of If This Is True, brings forth what drives creatives to do what they do. What if the thing standing between you and what you want isn't strategy, timing, or circumstance, but something operating in a realm you've never been taught to access? In this solo episode, Emily Fletcher shares the insight that has become the cornerstone of nearly two decades of teaching: that most of the obstacles blocking what we most desire are invisible. Not because they're imaginary. They are very real. But because they're happening at a different state of consciousness. Emily introduces the concept of invisible cages: the accumulated stress, inherited beliefs, unfelt feelings, and intergenerational trauma stored at the cellular level that quietly set the upper limit on what we allow ourselves to receive. And she makes the case that no amount of strategy, goal-setting, or external change can dissolve them, because you cannot remove a cage you cannot see. The solution, she argues, is access to the unmanifest: a verifiable fourth state of consciousness, distinct from waking, sleeping, or dreaming, where the body receives rest five times deeper than sleep and begins spontaneously releasing the backlog of stress that creates the cages in the first place. Emily shares a student's story, a profound piece of sculpture from Burning Man, and a discovery about the Egyptian goddess Nephthys that reframed her entire body of work. In this episode, Emily explores: Why the real blocks to manifestation are invisible, and why that's actually good news The "I'll be happy when" syndrome and what it reveals about how most people are trying to manifest How 99.999% of knowable reality is invisible, and what that means for how we approach change The Burning Man sculpture that shows two adults stuck back to back while their inner children desperately try to connect Isis and Nephthys: the twin goddesses of manifest and unmanifest, and the lightbulb moment that tied Emily's work together What happens in the body when you access the fourth state: rest, release, and rising frequency Why the benefits of accessing the field compound over time, just as the harmful effects of stress do One student's story of unexpected income, career clarity, and the emotional courage that emerged Key Moments: 00:00 – The thing keeping people stuck is rarely what they think it is 01:42 – Who this episode is for 03:52 – Trying to solve invisible problems with visible tools 05:09 – The Burning Man sculpture and invisible cages 07:37 – The "I'll be happy when" syndrome 08:06 – External reality as an outpicturing of internal architecture 09:26 – Once you access the field, you get access to more 10:13 – We cannot remove what we cannot see 11:24 – Isis, Nephthys, and the unmanifest 13:25 – Rest five times deeper than sleep 15:30 – The compound effect 17:38 – Cheryl's story 19:10 – Magic Maker: free, three days, July 16 ✨ Magic Maker is officially open for registration. Why am I talking about my closet on a psychedelic podcast? This episode isn't really about clothes—it's about stuck energy, old identities, and the energy that is released when you finally clear out the physical space that's been weighing you down without your awareness. In this episode, I share a practice I've been doing for over 30 years: cleaning my closet on LSD. And I walk you through what happened this month when I did the deepest purge of my life, and what it unleashed way beyond the closet. In this episode: How shopping was my mom's love language, and how I took it on as an artistic endeavor How I got my first faux fur jacket (a foreshadowing of so much faux fur to come) at eight in the 1970s, even though we lived in south Florida The most romantic thing any man has ever said to me, and why it's one of the many reasons I married him The three categories of closet clutter: the easy yes, the easy no, and the messy middle full of landmines, and why LSD collapses that middle ground and makes it easy to clear Why I believe LSD works better for this than mushrooms Beware the chaos factor: why you need to give yourself a full day and not freak out when everything ends up on the floor "This closet is for the living" A client story about five shapeless black dresses and a lot of imaginary funerals What I learned from the author, Karen Kingston, about clutter and energy, and why hiding things under the bed or in a storage unit doesn't actually work What the guides told me to do with my six weeks of spaciousness, and why I had to push back on their recommendation Why I don't follow the "If you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it" rule and never will The energetic reset that followed: no alcohol, no refined sugar for the rest of the year, yoga 2-3 times a week, bedroom getting painted, to-do lists actually getting done, which all started with the closet Finally getting on the Chinese New Year fire horse and what that actually feels like after months of resistance and putting on the brakes Resources mentioned: Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui: Learn the Art of Space Clearing and Bring New Energy into Your Life — Karen Kingston Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui — Karen Kingston https://www.mindvalley.com/u— Where TED meets Burning Man internationally Episode 32 — Year of the Fire Horse, the Divine Feminine & Not Feeling Ready with Tracey Tee   Connect with Carla If you're inspired by this episode and want to stay connected, follow Carla and Psychedelic Divas on social media or visit the website to get your Psychedelic Safety Guide Including What to Do When Things Go Wrong: Website: PsychedelicDivas.com https://psychedelicdivas.com/ Carla's Coaching: CarlaDetchon.com https://carladetchon.com/ Instagram: @psychedelicdivas https://www.instagram.com/psychedelicdivas YouTube: Want to see what I'm wearing in each episode? The Occupational Philosophers  |  Episode 117  |  With Jasper Vallance Jasper Vallance is a social entrepreneur who left his corporate life at Google to create a life of meaning driven by his passions. As an event architect, he became the founder of Australia's largest sober dance party.  He has taken what he learned at Burning Man to rethink what corporate gatherings could actually do for people. This episode is about why many company events don't work and what intentional gathering looks like when it's done right. In this episode, they cover the collapse of Friday drinks, the WeWork meltdown (yes, that one), and why alcohol has never actually been the social lubricant we think it is. Timestamps 00:00 – Opening clip: the art of setting the scene 00:48 – What's caught your eye?  05:00 – Guest intro: Jasper Vallance 07:30 – Burning Seed relaunch — Cosmic Canyon 10:24 – Burning Man 101: it's 10 principles 11:18 – Where are you in the world?  12:19 – Dinner Party Round begins 12:41 – What's giving you joy?  14:00 – Who inspires you?  16:12 – Big question: can the magic of Burning Man translate to company events? 19:29 – What do you actually do?  20:49 – Why Jasper is always in costume — and why that matters 21:22 – The secret sauce: costumes do what alcohol does, without the damage 22:20 – Google, 2007, and what the digital age did to human connection 26:01 – How Burning Man changed his life 27:42 – How Xstatic Sunsets was born: the natural high through dance 28:22 – Walking the talk: how do you actually create belonging? 30:15 – The welcome experience: hugs, costumes, facilitators 31:42 – The corporate opportunity: what if the CEO wore a chicken outfit? 33:00 – Storytelling starts before people arrive — the art of building anticipation 35:14 – Thought Experiment: Jasper Vallance, Event Detective 51:44 – Rapid fire: one thing you couldn't live without 53:04 – Dr. Peter Lovatt: dance first, think later 54:04 – The Occupational Philosophers Maniguesto  56:19 – What's next: Burning Seed and Immersive8 57:42 – Where to find Jasper online 58:50 – Post-show reflections: John and Simon on the art of gathering Key Ideas Purpose before planning. Most corporate events treat purpose as an afterthought. Jasper argues it should be the first thing locked in — not as a value statement, but as a lived experience the event is designed to create. Participation over presentation. Burning Man works because everyone is in the action. The moment people become spectators, you lose them. Same applies to company offsites. Costumes do what alcohol does, without the damage. They lower inhibitions, break social hierarchies, and give people permission to play. Jasper has proven this at scale. The welcome is everything. The first point of contact sets the entire tone. Not an icebreaker on a slide. An actual human welcome that makes people feel like they belong. Passions connect people across silos. Ask everyone what they love doing outside work. Cyclists ride together. Cooks cook together. Then they come back with something real in common. Post-COVID, Friday drinks aren't coming back. Younger generations want to go home. The social fabric of the office has changed. The answer isn't to recreate the old model — it's to reimagine what connection looks like now. Standout Line "I have guys coming up at the end of the night going, 'I almost had a drink before I came in, but I'm so glad I didn't.' That is the experience I'm trying to deliver." What started as one innocent question — What's the single greatest fast-food item ever created? — quickly became one of the most passionate arguments in Rizz Show history. The gang goes all-in debating whether the Wendy's Frosty deserves legendary status, if the Chicken McNugget changed civilization, and why the Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme might secretly be one of mankind's greatest engineering achievements. Along the way, there are passionate defenses of Happy Meals, Dairy Queen Blizzards, hash browns, curly fries, White Castle chicken rings, and enough fast-food nostalgia to make you immediately pull into a drive-thru.Because this is The Rizzuto Show, the conversation somehow swerves into stories about Ted Drewes inspiring the Blizzard, deep-fried tacos that look questionable but taste incredible, and the realization that nearly every great food invention somehow has St. Louis fingerprints on it.And then… because this is also a comedy podcast, things get even weirder. The crew dives into celebrity chaos, including Jack White's divorce filing, Daryl Hall's kidney transplant, Oprah's comments about Whitney Houston, and why Sexyy Red is locked in a legal battle involving stolen jewelry and security guards. Lauren delivers music news featuring Turnstile's return to St. Louis, AC/DC's massive touring numbers, and a Chris Cornell tribute project that sparks yet another spirited debate. There's also talk about Burning Man documentaries, a new Blair Witch movie, Elizabeth Banks becoming Ms. Frizzle, and one of the strangest conversations you'll ever hear about organ donation pricing. It's another episode that proves no topic is too small to become complete nonsense once Rizz and the gang get involved. Whether you're here for food arguments, celebrity news, weird stories, or daily chaos, this comedy podcast delivers exactly what you'd expect from your favorite morning show…and probably a few things you definitely didn't expect. If you've ever argued over fries, defended a favorite fast-food order like it was your child, or found yourself laughing at conversations that completely lose the plot, then this comedy podcast is for you.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week, Julia is joined by Allegra to investigate the enduring, mythical appeal of the music festival. From medieval carnivals to Woodstock, and Coachella brand trips to FYRE fest, the girlies explore the human desire to build temporary utopias — and how festival outcomes range from communal transcendence and PLUR to corporate-branded slop and FEMA-level weather events. Digressions include Billie Eilish starring in The Bell Jar for some reason, the ouroborous of influencer video essays, and Allegra's parents getting matching plastic surgery on her birthday. Save San Francisco's Soul: Jonathan Weber on Technology and Politics in the City By the Bay

“The same creative and political forces that gave rise to [San Francisco's] boom nearly engineered its collapse.” — Jonathan Weber In Hitchcock's Vertigo, the quintessential San Francisco movie, the villain points to an old painting of the city and tells Jimmy Stewart that San Francisco has changed. The real city has been lost, he says. Somebody has stolen San Francisco's soul. The veteran tech journalist Jonathan Weber is the latest writer to search for that soul. In City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco, Weber bemoans the disappearance of the real San Francisco — the city not just of the Beats and the Counterculture but also of ordinary teachers and policemen. We've had thirty years of boom, bust, and Big Tech. The ordinary folks of San Francisco have been replaced by a new class of tech bros. In 1992, just 2% of San Franciscans worked in tech. By 2019 it was 35%. As a longtime San Franciscan, Weber had a front-row seat on the dot-com mania, the rise of social media, Uber and Airbnb, the pandemic's great emptying of downtown, and now the AI boom driven by the San Francisco-based Anthropic and OpenAI. In City on the Edge, Weber argues that the same creative and political forces that gave rise to the boom — the counterculture's anarchic spirit, the city's love affair with eccentricity, the tech industry's utopian self-belief — also engineered its near-collapse. Digital vertigo, so to speak. Once again somebody has stolen San Francisco's soul. Five Takeaways •       From 2% to 35%: The Numbers Behind the Transformation: In 1992, just 2% of San Francisco workers were in tech. By 2019 it was 35%. The book traces how this happened: a city economically troubled in the early 1990s, still reeling from AIDS and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, with its manufacturing base gone and its corporate headquarters thinning out. Into this vacuum came a group of free-thinking technologists immersed in the city's creative counterculture. They invented the contemporary internet. What followed was one of the most rapid urban transformations in American history. •       The Cacophony Society and the Founding of Burning Man: Before the tech boom, San Francisco in the early 1990s had a remarkable underground culture. Weber writes about the Cacophony Society — the group of anarchic free spirits who effectively founded the Burning Man festival. The Cacophony Society emerged from the counterculture of the 1960s through various evolutions — Situationist pranks, urban exploration, radical creativity. Burning Man began as their annual trip to the Black Rock Desert. The spirit of that founding: go somewhere, build something, be someone different, leave no trace. That spirit was the soul of the city too. •       The City of Nostalgia: Always Believing Yesterday Was Better: Weber takes his Vertigo reference seriously. San Francisco is structurally a city of nostalgia — people arrive with a fixed idea of what the city is, and it inevitably becomes something different. The gap between the idea and the reality generates permanent mourning. This is not unique to San Francisco — Trump has built a presidency on the idea that things were better in the 1950s — but it is intensified here by the height of the hopes people bring. The city means something bigger than itself. That is both its greatest asset and its permanent wound. •       The AI Boom and the Coming IPO Earthquake: The current AI boom is, in Weber's reading, likely to be the largest yet. OpenAI and Anthropic are both based in the city. When those IPOs happen, San Francisco real estate — already rising 25–50% in some neighbourhoods, Andrew notes — will go, in Weber's words, “really, really crazy again.” Hundreds of thousands of millionaires will be created overnight. The city is gradually becoming uniformly wealthy. Some of the old tensions may be less intense for that reason. But Weber does not think the cycles are over. The current boom will bust, as all booms do. What comes next is the question. •       Burning Man, the Internet, and the Future of Cities: Weber ends the book at Burning Man. His closing observation: when the internet arrived on the playa, Burning Man lost the sense that it was a separate world — a place where you could be a different person, because nothing from your regular life could reach you. Now everyone has a phone. The privacy is gone. The sense of separation is gone. For cities: part of the power of cities is that they bring people together, and good things arise from that friction. But if technology no longer requires you to be in the same place, cities become less essential. What is the future of the city in the age of technology? Weber doesn't have a tidy answer. Neither does anyone else. About the Guest Jonathan Weber is a veteran technology journalist and the author of City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco (Atria Books, June 9, 2026). He was the founding editor-in-chief of The Industry Standard, former editor-in-chief of the San Francisco Standard, and covered the technology industry for the Los Angeles Times. He lives in San Francisco. References: •       City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco by Jonathan Weber (Atria Books, June 9, 2026). •       David Talbot, Season of the Witch: Enchantment, Terror, and Deliverance in the City of Love — referenced in the conversation; Weber's recommended companion read on 1970s San Francisco. •       Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson, Abundance — referenced in the closing exchange. •       Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem — the opening epigraph to Weber's book, referenced in the conversation. •       Alfred Hitchcock, Vertigo (1958) — Andrew's reference; the film's own meditation on San Francisco as a city of nostalgia. About Keen On America Nobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. WORT 89.9FM Madison · The Line Between Recreation and Medication is Finer than You Think Today Professor Nicholas Powers joins Ali Muldrow in a conversation about his new book, Black Psychedelic Revolution. Psychedelics such as LSD and ketamine are beginning to gain popularity as increasing evidence supports promising treatments of psychological conditions, trauma, and changing one's autobiographical narrative. They also heard from callers who shared transformational personal experiences while using psychedelics. What is the difference between recreation and medication? Powers suggests that the line may be finer than you think. The idea is that recreational activities like art, poetry, or even psychedelic drugs can be healing. Powers also noted that the most safe way to have a psychological experience is in a controlled and safe environment with a guide. If a person is in a state of trauma or depression, the chemicals from these drugs might lead to a further inability to cope once the trip is over, and that is when these drugs can become addictive. However, Powers emphasized that it's the prior state of trauma that creates the addiction rather than the drug itself. Powers said that the way these psychedelic drugs work is by inhibiting the ego, which leads to questioning core beliefs and the stories you were told about your life. This is why after a psychedelic trip, people often change their previously held beliefs. It is also why people tend to change their beliefs the most during college. During the transition period between being reliant on your parents and becoming an independent adult, young people question the stories that they were told. Powers encourages this kind of discussion in his college classrooms and asks his students to try to find the truth in their experiences. Additionally, there is a surge in the glamorization of drugs and removing the stigma associated with them. Drugs such as ritalin or adderall are given to children at younger ages reducing the stigma for using drugs to treat mental health, but there is still a sense that they are necessary. Powers says there is a delicate balance between maintaining a healthy skepticism about the medical industry without denying its benefits entirely. He encourages people to always think about who is profiting, whether from criminalizing marijuana or giving ritalin to four year olds. The discussion ended with the positive experiences that can come from having a controlled psychedelic experience. Some examples included helping alcohol addiction, understanding the core reasons why a marriage ended, finding peace and answers within the counterculture of the 1960s, and becoming a more compassionate person.  Nicholas Powers is an Associate Professor of English at SUNY Old Westbury. Powers has presented talks and reports from the Psychedelic Renaissance since 2017. He has written for numerous psychedelic publications from Lucid News to Double Blind. Alongside published articles, he has given talks at Naropa University and Chacruna. Powers has published three books with Upset Press. The first is a book of poetry, the second a mix of reportage from disaster zones, protests, and Burning Man. The third is a political vampire novel. He regularly attends Wild Seeds Writers Retreat and Cave Canem Black poetry workshops. Powers lives in Brooklyn with his son. Did you enjoy this story?
