On this podcast episode I ponder the question - Am I a Trekkie? I recently watched the 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' trailer and that spurred some nostalgia feelings of when I used to watch the 'Star Trek' TV series when I was young. Now it has been quite some time since I last watched any 'Star Trek' but I wanted to check out the Paramount+ offerings since I have the subscription now. So, I watched the first episodes of 'Picard' and 'Discovery' then ended up watching some more episodes of 'Picard' which kept me up late (and hence this late podcast upload)! Also, April 5th is considered "First Contact Day" as this is in reference to the date April 5, 2063 of when Humans first made contact with the Vulcans in the 'Star Trek: First Contact' movie. About 'Star Trek: Picard' 'Star Trek: Picard' features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation.' The new series will follow this iconic character into the next chapter of his life. Set at the end of the 24th century, 18 years after the events of `Star Trek: Nemesis', with Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role, `Star Trek: Picard' revolves around retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard. He is still deeply affected by the loss of Lieutenant Commander Data, portrayed by Brent Spiner, and the destruction of Romulus, and steps into the next chapter of his life. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers and Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout) serves as co-executive producer and Kirsten Beyer as supervising producer. Hanelle Culpepper will direct the first two episodes of the series. Starring: Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Harry Treadaway, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Evan Evagora, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis. Created by: Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, Alex Kurtzman. Based on 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' by Gene Roddenberry.
Det er endnu engang blevet tid til Streamingnyhederne - denne gang uden Maria Fantino, som hverken Tobias eller Anders kender. Vi er lige gået ind i maj måned, og hvordan kan vi fejre det? Med Streamingnyhederne naturligvis - denne gang uden 90'er-manken over dem alle MORTEN STIG CHRISTENSEN. That's a man's man. This week on Episode 471 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out’ San Diego’s Virtual Comic Con including Discovery’s hope, Lower Decks clips, Progress on Strange New Worlds, and P-Stew! In Star Trek gaming, we share with you which game developers are taking actions for a more equitable future. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Question Is: CQ: What was your favorite news to come out of the SDCC@Home? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Star TrekUniverse Panel SDCC 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qwmWA59QcQ What a strange year 2020 has been. The US and Iran almost started World War III, there’s a global pandemic, giant murderous hornets - aptly named Murder Hornets - were big news until they weren’t. Civil unrest, an economic rollercoaster, an oily island that drives men mad, social distancing. Wild stuff. So in this weird-and-wild world of social-distancing and goatees-for-all, what of convention season? You may be surprised to learn conventions have, in fact, continued - Sort of. While some promoters have postponed their events until smack-dab-in-the-middle of the predicted second-wave of Covid-19 *Cough*Creation*Cough* Others have decided to take their stage digital - including arguably the biggest Geek-Con in all the world - San Diego Comic Con. This week, the mega-event streamed its much anticipated panels via the internet, teasing fans everywhere with what is to come in their favorite fictional universe - and ParamountCBS’ Star Trek set the pace. On Thursday July 23rd, the showrunners and stars of Star Trek’s newest offerings pulled up their favorite chair and shared thoughts about what has happened - and what is to come - in their respective Star Trek offerings. We are going to cover SDCC20 a little different than we have in previous years because - well - it was a little different. Star Trek: Discovery It seems only apt that we cover Star Trek’s first “NuTrek” offering - Star Trek: Discovery - at the start. Before the Q&A, Discovery’s showrunner Michelle Paradise led Executive Producer/Director Olatunde Osunsanmi and the cast of Discovery season two -including most of the bridge crew as well as Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn - in a table read of the Discovery Season 2 Finale, “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2”. The read was edited, so it played very tightly, and was interspersed with early special effects layouts and storyboards of some of the action sequences. It was a fun introduction, to be sure, and it was great to see the acting chops of the cast sans costumes, sets, and makeup. But what about Trek nuggets? Oh - there were trek nuggets. While the Q&A was interesting - revealing a POSSIBLE return of more Kelpians, and verification of a stronger romance between Stametts and Culber - possibly the biggest Discovery Season 3 news dropped a few days after the panel. On July 27th, the team released a short video of Burnham holding a tattered Federation flag, which ended with a panel that read “Star Trek: Discovery. New Season October 15”. We have a release date! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYtzFoJqL2s Star Trek: Picard Ending the Star Trek Universe Panel, but coming in number two here on Priority One, was the cast of Star Trek: Picard. Frankly, very little was said about the upcoming season, and it was - in large part - a rehash of things we’ve already covered. The cast was in awe of Sir Patrick, it was nice for the Next Generation alumni to reunite, both Sir Patrick and Brent Spiner were reluctant to return to the roles...et cetera, et cetera. As always though, it’s fun to watch the banter and admiration of the cast, and Sir Patrick even earned a couple of new nicknames - SPS and P-Stew. Despite the lack of new information coming from the virtual panel, there was some fun news that came a few days BEFORE the convention - Star Trek: Picard is getting a physical medium release! Announced on July 21st, Picard’s premiere season will be available on DVD, BluRay, and Limited Edition Steelbook on October 6. Included in the release will be the first ten episodes of the season, documentaries, commentary, deleted scenes, and the Short Trek “Children of Mars”. At the time of this writing, the DVD can be preordered for 37.34 US dollars and the BluRay for 47.99 US dollars at Amazon.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azicjg_WlPM Star Trek: Strange New Worlds As we mentioned in our first story, the upcoming “Strange New Worlds” leads joined the Discovery cast for a table read and Q&A. As expected, they discussed how Discovery’s second season adventure would affect their characters in the upcoming series - but we’ll get back to that. Leading into the table read, Star Trek’s Meta Captains - Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin - delivered a bit of excitement. In introducing Strange New Worlds, Kurtzman revealed that the team was working on the series as far back as last SDCC. Kurtzman then gave some progress on where “Strange New Worlds” was, production wise. Meanwhile, back at the panel the trio of Mount, Peck, and Romijn discussed Discovery’s effect on their upcoming roles. Star Trek: Animated Finally, the panel covered Star Trek animation! The Star Trek: Lower Decks panel was moderated by series creator and showrunner Mike McMahon, and started with a clip. It begins, much like the teaser, with Boimler’s “Captains log” being interrupted by the loud and spunky Ensign Mariner - who turns out to be celebrating shore leave with a bit of libation. The comedy is cartoony, but with a Star Trek backdrop! After the clip, we are introduced to the voice talent, each describing their characters, what they love about the show, and a BLEEP ridden segment that tones out the spoilers they’re spilling. You can Trek out 16 new images of the series at Treknews.net! But we said the panel covered Star Trek ANIMATION, not Star Trek LOWER DECKS. So what does that mean? Well, we finally know a bit about the upcoming Nickelodeon series! After Kurtzman discussed Strange New Worlds, Kadin talked a bit about the new animated project “Prodigy”. In an announcement on Star Trek.com ”Nickelodeon and CBS Television Studios today officially revealed the title and logo for its all-new animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, which follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”. The show is vaguely expected in 2021. Star Trek Supports NAACP Legal Defense Fund The leadership, cast, and crew of Star Trek spent a good deal of time talking about Star Trek’s importance, and what makes it relevant today - Inclusion, Respect, Equality. Prior to the Discovery panel Sonequa Martin-Green announced an important message regarding the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. If you wish to donate to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, please follow the link. Thank you This Week in Trek History by Thomas Reynolds To the outside world it was July 28th, 1965, but on a soundstage in Culver City, it was stardate 1313.8. “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the original Star Trek’s second pilot episode, finished principal filming as Captain James T. Kirk buried a new god under a phaser-triggered rockslide on the surface of Delta Vega. Presumably he had time to put a clean, unripped shirt on before producer Lucille Ball’s wrap party. The people of Earth would first see Kirk’s friendship with Gary Mitchell come to its tragic end over a year later, when “Where No Man Has Gone Before” hit terrestrial airwaves the following September. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIFWiSw4M0I Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Timelines Event: “No Trouble At All” Some secrets should never be known. Some life should never be sought out. And some organisms shouldn’t be spliced with human DNA and turned into the most horrifying breakfast cereal of all time, LIEUTENANT. Section 31, the Borg, and the Klingon Empire are punting all ideas of ethical scientific research out the airlock in Star Trek Timelines’ impending “No Trouble At All” Faction Event. Kicking off on July 30th and running through August 3rd, the event will feature the new 5-star Technician Fisher from the original NCC-1701 as its ranked reward. Event Crew includes last week’s 5-star faction reward Dr. Edward La Forge, the new 5-star Mother Horta, and the scourge of the Cabot himself: the 4-star Edward “Idiot” Larkin. It is the official position of Priority One Productions that Lieutenant Larkin and the Mother Horta must be kept as far away from each other as our understanding of spacetime allows. https://twitter.com/STTimelines/status/1287796907096539141 George Takei: Like A (Crime) Boss The command track in Starfleet can take you very interesting places. You might become best friends with a neural parasite, a smear on the side of a Borg cube, or patriarch of the Arakawa yakuza clan. Probably not all at once, though. On July 22nd, the Reno Gazette Journal published an interview with the 83-year-old actor, activist and Star Trek icon George Takei about his voice acting role as criminal patriarch Masumi Arakawa in the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon video game. Takei explains that his motivation for the role comes from his fascination with modern yakuza culture and its samurai roots, saying “Here is this man who, at his core, is a decent human being who lives within that culture and expects that same kind of fidelity. Some aspects demand inhumane fidelity to that code and it's a shared understanding”. Takei also talks about his early life as a Japanese-American in the midst of World War II, and how his admiration for the benshi narrators of silent film lead to his careers in voice acting, theater, and far beyond the stars. Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be available for Xbox One, PS4, and Windows PCs this November. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqbNaxO82g 5D Chess! Multiverse Time Travel! Are you feeling let down by the inferior minds of Spock, Data, Reginald Barclay, and their intellect limiting Three-dimensional chess? Bored with the Aldabren Exchange and the Kriskov Gambit? Well, then maybe the new 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel would be more challenging! The new game, released on Steam by developer Thunkspace, might not be a part of Star Trek, but somehow we think Trek’s great minds would approve. The rules for this brain-breaking chess variation begin from the standard chess rules and standard chess board. Then you introduce the ability to time travel your pieces, creating a multiverse timeline of alternate boards, and things get crazy. We’re talking enough temporal mechanics here to drive Miles O’Brien to distraction. They even introduce a couple of new pieces entirely dedicated to time-travel movement, the Unicorn and the Dragon. Read some of the Steam reviews of the game, and it feels like Q himself might find this game worthy. For example, one top review reads “I was playing a game against a human opponent online, and at one point they sent a queen back in time from one of the ten timelines currently in play to put five of my past kings into check at once. I sent one of my own pieces even further back to stall, and they proceeded to send one of their queens back to the start of the game to try and beat me before I even got to that point.” Captain, if you’re curious, Trek it out on Steam now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBzX1ybigmw

While some promoters have postponed their events until smack-dab-in-the-middle of the predicted second-wave of Covid-19 *Cough*Creation*Cough* Others have decided to take their stage digital - including arguably the biggest Geek-Con in all the world - San Diego Comic Con. This week, the mega-event streamed its much anticipated panels via the internet, teasing fans everywhere with what is to come in their favorite fictional universe - and ParamountCBS' Star Trek set the pace. On Thursday July 23rd, the showrunners and stars of Star Trek's newest offerings pulled up their favorite chair and shared thoughts about what has happened - and what is to come - in their respective Star Trek offerings. We are going to cover SDCC20 a little different than we have in previous years because - well - it was a little different. Star Trek: Discovery It seems only apt that we cover Star Trek's first “NuTrek” offering - Star Trek: Discovery - at the start. Before the Q&A, Discovery's showrunner Michelle Paradise led Executive Producer/Director Olatunde Osunsanmi and the cast of Discovery season two -including most of the bridge crew as well as Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn - in a table read of the Discovery Season 2 Finale, “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2”. Frankly, very little was said about the upcoming season, and it was - in large part - a rehash of things we've already covered. The cast was in awe of Sir Patrick, it was nice for the Next Generation alumni to reunite, both Sir Patrick and Brent Spiner were reluctant to return to the roles...et cetera, et cetera. As always though, it's fun to watch the banter and admiration of the cast, and Sir Patrick even earned a couple of new nicknames - SPS and P-Stew. Despite the lack of new information coming from the virtual panel, there was some fun news that came a few days BEFORE the convention - Star Trek: Picard is getting a physical medium release! Announced on July 21st, Picard's premiere season will be available on DVD, BluRay, and Limited Edition Steelbook on October 6. As expected, they discussed how Discovery's second season adventure would affect their characters in the upcoming series - but we'll get back to that. Leading into the table read, Star Trek's Meta Captains - Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin - delivered a bit of excitement. In introducing Strange New Worlds, Kurtzman revealed that the team was working on the series as far back as last SDCC. Kurtzman then gave some progress on where “Strange New Worlds” was, production wise. Meanwhile, back at the panel the trio of Mount, Peck, and Romijn discussed Discovery's effect on their upcoming roles. Star Trek: Animated Finally, the panel covered Star Trek animation! The Star Trek: Lower Decks panel was moderated by series creator and showrunner Mike McMahon, and started with a clip. It begins, much like the teaser, with Boimler's “Captains log” being interrupted by the loud and spunky Ensign Mariner - who turns out to be celebrating shore leave with a bit of libation. The comedy is cartoony, but with a Star Trek backdrop! After the clip, we are introduced to the voice talent, each describing their characters, what they love about the show, and a BLEEP ridden segment that tones out the spoilers they're spilling. Star Trek Supports NAACP Legal Defense Fund The leadership, cast, and crew of Star Trek spent a good deal of time talking about Star Trek's importance, and what makes it relevant today - Inclusion, Respect, Equality. “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the original Star Trek's second pilot episode, finished principal filming as Captain James T. Kirk buried a new god under a phaser-triggered rockslide on the surface of Delta Vega. Presumably he had time to put a clean, unripped shirt on before producer Lucille Ball's wrap party. The people of Earth would first see Kirk's friendship with Gary Mitchell come to its tragic end over a year later, when “Where No Man Has Gone Before” hit terrestrial airwaves the following September. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIFWiSw4M0I Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Star Trek Timelines Event: “No Trouble At All” Some secrets should never be known. Some life should never be sought out. And some organisms shouldn't be spliced with human DNA and turned into the most horrifying breakfast cereal of all time, LIEUTENANT. Section 31, the Borg, and the Klingon Empire are punting all ideas of ethical scientific research out the airlock in Star Trek Timelines' impending “No Trouble At All” Faction Event. Kicking off on July 30th and running through August 3rd, the event will feature the new 5-star Technician Fisher from the original NCC-1701 as its ranked reward. Event Crew includes last week's 5-star faction reward Dr. The new game, released on Steam by developer Thunkspace, might not be a part of Star Trek, but somehow we think Trek's great minds would approve. The rules for this brain-breaking chess variation begin from the standard chess rules and standard chess board. Then you introduce the ability to time travel your pieces, creating a multiverse timeline of alternate boards, and things get crazy. We're talking enough temporal mechanics here to drive Miles O'Brien to distraction. I sent one of my own pieces even further back to stall, and they proceeded to send one of their queens back to the start of the game to try and beat me before I even got to that point.” Captain, if you're curious, Trek it out on Steam now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBzX1ybigmw

This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: If you could join the production crew of any Star Trek series, what would be your dream job? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Star Trek Command Training Program It is hard to deny, at this point, that Star Trek programming has entered into a new Renaissance. With so many new shows currently in production, most every Trek fan can find something to be excited about. But, if you're an undergraduate or graduate student, this week's news from CBS may be the most exciting yet. CBS Television Studios and the Television Academy Foundation have announced the “Star Trek Command Training Program”. The new program will provide internship placements on a Star Trek series for two lucky students per semester, starting in 2020. If you've ever dreamed of sitting in the writers' room, building bridge sets, or maybe being part of the Lower Decks animation team, then this could be your ticket into the crew. Speaking about the program, Star Trek EP Alex Kurtzman said, “The Star Trek universe is an ideal place to celebrate new voices and perspectives. We want to provide the framework to begin entertainment careers in a meaningful way and can't wait to get started.” The application process will be handled by The Academy Foundation, while CBS Television will handle mentorship assignments and curriculum. Interested students should visit TelevisionAcademy.com/internships to apply. Applications are open through January 21, 2020 for eligible college students 18 and over. Colm Meaney Honored Veteran Star Trek actor Colm Meaney was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this past week at the annual Irish Post Awards. The Awards honor the accomplishments of Irish individuals in fields like business, entertainment, and sports. We, of course, are familiar with Meaney for his 225 Star Trek appearances. His career as Starfleet engineer Miles O'Brien is second only to Michael Dorn's Worf for Trek appearances. The versatile actor has also appeared in an impressive body of other TV and film projects, with IMDB listing 127 acting credits to his name. When interviewed after the Awards, Mr. Meaney himself mused, “I enjoyed Star Trek. I did it for seven years. Seven years in a space suit was enough, but it was very enjoyable. Star Trek fans still speak to me in the street. Sometimes it's like I'm two different actors with two different careers - the Star Trek career and the other career” Speaking of the award itself, the actor said, ”I feel very honoured. It was a bit of a surprise but a very welcome one.” Official Star Trek Timeline The official Star Trek website also published an interesting new video this week. The video is titled “A Timeline Through the Star Trek Universe, Part 1”. Throughout the 2 minute, 5 second video, we're reminded of touchstone events in the Star Trek timeline. Beginning with the events of Voyager's “Death Wish” at 13.8 billion years ago, the chart carries right through the busy 23rd and 24th centuries, up to the destruction of Romulus in 2387. Each iteration of Star Trek on the big or small screen is represented, with special mention given to certain high profile events like the founding of the Federation, the Enterprise's 5 year mission, or the Dominion War. Perhaps most intriguingly, the video ends with the promise of “To Be Continued…” Star Trek 4 Speaking of adding to the canon timeline… Star Trek Kelvin 4 is gaining momentum --- FOR REAL THIS TIME. In an exclusive report by Deadline, Noah Hawley has been announced as its writer AND director. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Hawley developed the X-Men Universe spinoff “Legion” and is the brains behind FX's Emmy-winning limited series Fargo…. Now, not much is else is known with respect to story or production timetables but, at least we know the production is -- officially -- in the works. But, what about all this Tarantino talk that we just can't avoid??... Well according to Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr //quote// The studio separately is working on a Star Trek spinoff that Quentin Tarantino is eyeing to direct and has been working on with Abrams. WEEKLY TOP TIP Running patrols seems to be a fast and fun way to level up your event progress. It can be even faster when you're running the “Blockade” patrol. After you set up the beacon you'll need to defend three groups of Krenim ships from Vadwaur and Voth. Well, as the contact says, if you only destroy the Vaadwaur the Voth might leave. And that's exactly what happens. By focusing on taking out just the Vaadwaur ships you can cut your targets for the mission almost in half. As soon as the last Vaadwaur ship is destroyed in each group the Voth ships disappear. Just imagine how much time you'll save over the course this feature event. And if you want to run these patrols at a high difficulty level, this can make your runs a little smoother. Other Gaming News Star Trek Fleet Command Mirror, Mirror Event Star Trek Fleet Command is bringing the Mirror Universe into the Kelvin Timeline. The “Mirror, Mirror” event last from now until November 29th and features Terran Empire versions of Kirk, Spock, and Uhura that are obtainable by participating solo and alliance missions. Also included in this event is the opportunity to acquire blueprints to build your very own ISS Jellyfish ship. When playing through the Mirror, Mirror missions you'll also have the option to experience alternate endings. The choice is yours. Trek out the show notes for more details on the event. Retro Gaming Star Trek The Next Generation for Game Boy Earth date September 1993. Star Trek The Next Generation is heading into its seventh and final season. Star Trek Deep Space Nine premiered earlier in the year and now starts its second season. Star Trek's golden age was at its height on the small screen. Then there's the smallest screen. The Nintendo Game Boy. The OG black and yellow 160 pixel by 144 pixel 8-bit gaming brick of happiness. Star Trek TNG for both Game Boy and the NES also released during September of 1993. And boy or boy did this game have one little trekkie beaming with joy. Players take on the role of a Starfleet cadet being instructed by Jean-Luc Picard as they take command of the Enterprise-D and embark on a series of training missions. Everything from transporting an ambassador to rescuing a crew to engaging in combat with the Borg. As the acting captain you give commands through interacting with each bridge crew member by selecting their combadge. To complete shipboard tasks like establishing a standard orbit or diverting power to the shields, you play various mini-games. As you complete missions you rank up and will unlock passwords that can be used to pick up your progress where you left off. I played this exclusively on the Game Boy, but I've heard that the NES version is a little easier to play. The graphics are not the best for the time, and the gameplay can feel clunky and not very intuitive. But at a time when the only other mobile Star Trek video games had you flying the Enterprise through an asteroid field, this was the first game that you felt like you were in the Captain's chair. So how can you play this game today? Well, you could of course download an emulator on your computer or phone. I actually have something called a Smartboy from Hyperkin. It's basically the lower half of a Game Boy with the the control buttons that you slide your USB-C phone into. You run an emulator on your phone, but you can actually plug a real cartridge into the back and play the game from the physical Game Boy cartridge on your phone screen. I love this because it feel like a Game Boy in my hands, but with a bright colorful screen. But the best option in my opinion is to purchase a Game Boy Advance SP. These are the first clamshell looking Nintendo handheld consoles, and the first with a backlit LCD screen. It plays both Game Boy Advance games

WEEKLY TOP TIP Running patrols seems to be a fast and fun way to level up your event progress. It can be even faster when you’re running the “Blockade” patrol. After you set up the beacon you’ll need to defend three groups of Krenim ships from Vadwaur and Voth. Well, as the contact says, if you only destroy the Vaadwaur the Voth might leave. And that’s exactly what happens. By focusing on taking out just the Vaadwaur ships you can cut your targets for the mission almost in half. As soon as the last Vaadwaur ship is destroyed in each group the Voth ships disappear. Just imagine how much time you’ll save over the course this feature event. And if you want to run these patrols at a high difficulty level, this can make your runs a little smoother. Other Gaming News Star Trek Fleet Command Mirror, Mirror Event Star Trek Fleet Command is bringing the Mirror Universe into the Kelvin Timeline. Retro Gaming Star Trek The Next Generation for Game Boy Earth date September 1993. Star Trek The Next Generation is heading into its seventh and final season. Star Trek Deep Space Nine premiered earlier in the year and now starts its second season. Star Trek’s golden age was at its height on the small screen. Then there’s the smallest screen. I played this exclusively on the Game Boy, but I’ve heard that the NES version is a little easier to play. The graphics are not the best for the time, and the gameplay can feel clunky and not very intuitive. But at a time when the only other mobile Star Trek video games had you flying the Enterprise through an asteroid field, this was the first game that you felt like you were in the Captain’s chair. So how can you play this game today? Well, you could of course download an emulator on your computer or phone. I actually have something called a Smartboy from Hyperkin. It’s basically the lower half of a Game Boy with the the control buttons that you slide your USB-C phone into.
This week on On Story we’ll hear from showrunners Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas on their CBS original series, S.W.A.T. The series premiered on CBS in 2017 and is currently slated for a 3rd season premiere in October. I spoke to Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas during a joint programming year-round event in partnership with Humanitas in Los Angeles earlier this year. Clips of S.W.A.T courtesy of CBS Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television Next up, we explore the horror genre with writers Andrew Kevin Walker, C. Robert Cargill and Alvaro Rodriguez. Little does this CBS Executive know that the pitch he is about to hear will change everything. Ghen Maynard hears lots of pitches for shows but this one is different. It isn’t a scripted drama or comedy series or traditional game show. There is nothing quite like it on TV and it doesn’t fit into any existing genre — but he knows one thing, he loves it. It’s an idea that would turn into a reality series set on an island and ultimately transform the primetime landscape on broadcast television and usher in a new generation of unscripted programming that would catapult his career. Ghen Maynard is the Senior Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming for CBS Television Studios. He’s the maverick who has helped develop some of reality television’s biggest hits. Early in his career, Ghen championed and brought to life the first competition reality show for Network Television… a mega-hit called Survivor. Ghen also developed and oversaw the multiple Emmy Award-winning The Amazing Race, the U.S. version of Big Brother, America’s Next Top Model as well as Kid Nation, Power of 10, and Million Dollar Password. As a drama development executive, he helped develop CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Judging Amy and The District. The list of successful shows goes on. There’s no doubt Maynard has a keen eye for what viewers like — Survivor, The Amazing Race, Big Brother and Top Model are among the longest-running reality TV franchises in the world. I caught up with Ghen just after the premiere of an unusual reboot version of the iconic 90’s teen series Beverly Hills 90210 called BH90210, which he developed and sold to FOX, and Kids Say the Darndest Things starring Tiffany Haddish, which he sold to ABC -- Once again proving that this Executive, who likes to think big, has the Midas Touch.
This week, we #TrekOut the BIG NEWS - Viacom and CBS have finally re-merged and what that means for Star Trek. Tony and I are here to give you OUR perspective - not only as trekkies - but as LAWYERS...and Henry will be there too! In Star Trek Online and gaming news, we look at Star Trek: Online’s “Awakening”, the upcoming episode “Beneath the Skin”, and talk about how much we LOVE temporal mechanics! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages This Weeks COMMUNITY QUESTIONS are: CQ: What do YOU think the newly formed ViacomCBS means for Star Trek? AND CQ: Which of the upcoming changes to existing STO T6 ship classes are you most excited about? Why? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Viacom and CBS Merge to Become - ViacomCBS There are stories that we cover here on Priority One Podcast that tend to keep popping up. Star Trek Kelvin IV, Tarantino Trek, how Guard Frequency is a pretty good show and you should check it out. But one story that has popped up for years, the reunification of Viacom and CBS, may finally be getting a conclusion! It had been suspected that talks were “Heating up” between the two National Amusement properties back in April, when CBS Acting Chief Executive Joe Ianniello’s contract was extended through 2019. It was believed that Ianniello, who had been serving as former CBS CEO Les Moonves’ replacement since September 2018, was both amicable to - and necessary for - a re-unification of CBS and Viacom. On May 30th, CNBC reported that merger negotiations were set to resume in mid-June. Then, on July 15th, both CBS and Viacom announced that they would present their financial earnings reports on the same day, August 8th, for the first time in “many quarters” - sending the industry into a state of rampant speculation. Finally, on August 13th, the deal was announced. The new entity, known as ViacomCBS, will merge assets from both companies - including Showtime, Nickelodeon, CBS Television Studios, and Viacom’s newly acquired streaming service Pluto TV. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish will serve as President and CEO of the newly merged company, and former CBS interim-CEO Joseph Ianello will serve as a chairman and CEO of CBS. Board Chair, and orchestrator of the merger, Shari Redstone said in the official announcement “My father once said ‘content is king,’ and never has that been more true than today. Through CBS and Viacom’s shared passion for premium content and innovation, we will establish a world-class, multiplatform media organization that is well-positioned for growth in a rapidly transforming industry” Star Trek was specifically cited as an asset by CEO Bob Bakish in an investment press presentation, expanding on the release by saying “We will have one of the largest libraries of iconic intellectual property, including more than 140,000 premium television episodes and over 3,600 film titles. Notably, this library reunites TV and film rights for some of our most popular franchises, including Star Trek and Mission: Impossible. And we see significant potential to better leverage these and other properties across platforms and assets, including film, television, live events, recreation and consumer products.” While much of the excitement centers on the combination of intellectual properties - including “Mission Impossible”, “NCIS”, “Transformers”, “South Park”, “The Twilight Zone”, and of course “Star Trek” - a big factor in the merger seems to focus on “Direct to Consumer” video-on-demand services. In an investor call made on August 13th, Ianello said “Just think about adding content from Nickelodeon, BET, MTV, Comedy Central to CBS All Access, and Paramount movies to Showtime. And also imagine our [ad-supported video on demand] properties like CBS Sports HQ and ET Live being added to Pluto [TV]. Plus, all of this will increasingly be done on a global basis.”. When asked whether the price-points of ViacomCBS’s current VOD services will be affected by the merger, Ianello said ViacomCBS would take a “slow and steady” approach to any changes. STAR TREK ONLINE AND GAMING NEWS by Shane Hoover Awakening: Beneath the Skin! Previously in Star Trek Online, the villainous J’Ula unleashed her fearsome Mycelial weapon upon the Federation, catapulting her fleet of 23rd century Klingons into 2410, along with your Age of Discovery player Captains. Awakening: Beneath the Skin will be the next episode in the story, releasing on PC September 10th and later this year on consoles. Joined by Star Trek Discovery’s Anthony Rapp, voicing a holographically reconstructed Paul Stamets, your Captain must venture into the Mycelial Network itself to stop J’Ula before she turns the power of her weapon on the planet Andoria. Putting the “Temporal” in “Temporal Starships” A number of frequently requested changes will be coming to Star Trek Online soon(™)! First, the entire collection of T6 Temporal Destroyers and Science Vessels originally released with the Temporal Lock Box are being brought up to date with the Temporal Specialization. These ships will now boast a Temporal Operative specialization on the Commander bridge officer seating, and will gain access to the Molecular Reconstruction game mechanic. Second, ships formerly called “Flight-Deck Cruisers” are being uniformly updated to “Flight-Deck Carriers”. As such, they will retain the 8 weapon configuration of Engineering cruisers, while boasting 2 hangar bays as carriers. All ships of the type will also have access to the Shield Frequency Modulation and Attract Fire cruiser commands. Lastly, not unlike the changes to Flight-Deck Carriers, current Escort Carriers are also being updated. To reinforce the differences between these ships and other true carriers, these ships will be reclassified as Strike Wing Escorts. Additionally, their Quick Deployment ship mastery will be replaced with Enhanced Weapon Systems. XMPP Sunset As of September 19th 2019, Star Trek Online will end support for XMPP client connections to its internal chat systems. Emil Guillermo: The Slants' Simon Tam speaks candidly on PODCAST: "The cure for hate speech isn't censorship...let communities decide, not government." July 10, 2017 6:58 PM It's been a big summer for Simon Tam, musician and founder of the Slants, now trademarked, reappropriated, and unanimously affirmed by the Supreme Court. He also got married recently in his native state of California, so there's been much to celebrate. And yet it seems there still some who aren't cheering his nearly eight-year-long battle to trademark his band's name and use the disparaging term "slant." People of color remain divided since the Slants' victory is certain to allow for the Washington NFL team to continue using its disparaging name. Tam told Emil Amok's Takeout, he's aware of that and it bothers him. "It makes my skin crawl, it's terrible," Tam said. But he ultimately feels the decision was a win for all, protecting vulnerable communities who have had no say in the trademark process until this case. "Our identities were used against us," said Tam, who feels it will now be up to the marketplace and our own communities to say what's inappropriate, rather than the government. "The cure of hate speech is not censorship," said Tam, who believes that the First Amendment allows for a deeper and more nuanced approach than simply to say some words are good, and others are bad. In recent reports, some Asian American legal groups like NAPABA and AAAJ have criticized the Supreme Court decision. (AALDEF and other Asian American groups joined the ACLU amicus brief and supported the Slants.) But Tam has held steady and rejects the "slippery slope" notion of critics who believe that an avalanche of hate speech will result from the decision. In an open letter to his critics, Tam sees the decision as advancing legit reappropriation. "In fact, now communities can be equipped to protect their own rights and prevent villainous characters from profiting and misleading people with these same terms," Tam wrote. In his open letter, Tam cited the case of Heeb, a Jewish publication on pop culture, granted the registration for their magazine, but when they applied for the exact same mark in the categories of t-shirts and events, were denied for "disparagement." As Tam points out, it meant when a group of Holocaust deniers sent harassing communications to subscribers, inviting them to Heeb Events, the organization was unable to stop them. "Had Heeb not been wrongly denied a registration, they would have been able to get a cease and desist order. This case now allows a just procedure against other people wrongly profiting from racial slurs or countering the work done by reappropriation." Tam concludes: "Laws, like words, are not always inherently harmful. It depends on how they are used. It is like a sharp blade: in the hands of an enemy, it can inflict pain and suffering. However, in the hands of a surgeon, it can provide healing. The law I fought against was a large sword used by the government to haphazardly target "disparaging" language, but the collateral damage was on the free speech rights of those who need protected expression the most. Like other broad policies around access and rights (be it stop and frisk or voter ID laws), there was a disparate impact on the marginalized." That logic may still not satisfy those conflicted by the decision, especially when it leads to a result like affirming the use of the Washington NFL team's slur. But the bottom line is still the First Amendment, which Tam is busy expressing in the studio on the follow up to the group's last EP, "The Band Who Must Not Be Named." The new disc will definitely be named, eponymously, the group's first ever under its proud SCOTUS affirmed banner. For Tam, in the name of the broader Asian American community, it was worth it. Emil Guillermo: Oh no, "Hawaii Five-0" and what it means to all of us July 6, 2017 4:18 PM When I first heard about Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park leaving "Hawaii Five-0," I couldn't believe it. The stars of the long-running TV crime procedural based in the 50th state simply asked for pay equity. They got the cold shoulder instead. Their exit leaves CBS with what it deserves. Hawaii Five-nothing. (photo by Loren Javier) I'm not watching a show with zero Asian American stars going into the eighth season. Really, how do you just let your top Asian American cast members on a TV show set in the nation's most Asian American state just pick up and leave? It's easy if you don't value diversity. Or to be more specific, equality. Here's the deal the white co-stars get that the Asian American stars don't. More pay. And a cut of the series profits. As if the white stars are the draw that carried the whole show. They're not. I don't even know who the co-stars Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan are. Frankly, I couldn't pick them out in a line at a Panda Express. But, of course, CBS Television Studios, the show's producers, wouldn't budge. And this is in a show that I would say was equally Kim's and Park's. All this proves is Asian American leverage in showbiz remains zero. Unless you're married to the boss like Julie Chen, who has climbed to the top on the shoulders of "Big Brother." But for the majority of Asian Americans who appear on the glassy side of the camera, the message is pretty clear. Just be happy to get SAG/AFTRA scale. Know your place. Don't overreach. You're the hired help. As my old friend Guy Aoki of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans told Hollywood Reporter, "the racial hierarchy established in the original 1968-1980 series remained intact in the 2010 reboot: Two white stars on top, two Asian/Pacific Islander stars on the bottom." It's sad that at this time in history, in what should be a vehicle for Asian Americans. this is how Asian American stars are treated. If you can just let a guy like Kim, arguably one of the top male Asian American stars in Hollywood, just leave, that's a major message to someone like me who wants to be the next Victor Wong. Or Amy Hill. Despite all the window dressing and Asian American stars you can point to, showbiz remains as racist now as it ever was. I'm particularly depressed by this after coming off a short run at the San Diego Fringe Festival with my one-man show, "Amok Monologues." My one good review made it worthwhile. Still, I'm a journalist and storyteller by trade. I combined the theater at this juncture in my life because I studied acting and drama a long time ago when I was in college and in grad school. Back then, I even thought about going into acting. But when the only Filipinos I saw played beach boys and drivers, I thought better of my stereotype. In fact, the best role I ever got was playing the white guy in black theater. But then maybe that's because my college roommate was the director and he owed it to me. I realized early on that it wouldn't happen for me in showbiz unless I write my own stories. But for me, the urgency of journalism outweighed the lure of show business. I felt the facts needed to be established before I felt comfortable telling stories on stage. That meant turning to journalism to tell our stories, even with hairspray and makeup, as I did when starting in TV. I thought TV would provide the right balance between showbiz and journalism. At KXAS in Dallas, I worked with Scott Pelley. (Would he have ended up like me had his name been Pellicito?) At KRON-TV in San Francisco, I worked with some of the most talented folks in the business. Oddly, my career climbed to its furthest point the more people couldn't see me--- in radio, where I could sound as white as anyone. But my life in the media shows, you still can't escape what Aoki calls that "racial hierarchy." Whites still control. And if being Asian American is important, or being deracinated sounds hideous to you, you're out of luck. Some make the compromise anyway, and hang on. Temporarily. But it catches up to you. You are who you are. And that can be a factor in how far you go in media. Maybe there are enough Asian American anchors around (predominantly women), so you can debate me and insist that things are changing. But that may be all show. If salaries were revealed, like in the "Hawaii Five-0" situation, I bet we're still being lowballed. So what does it mean to everyone else not in showbiz or journalism? Plenty. If you don't play in the ensemble, or play the lead in fake TV life, don't think you'll get a fair shot in real life quite as easily. TV helps create the stereotypical reality. When we don't show up in the image-making machinery of our culture, it's much harder to show up anywhere. Did CBS care that Hawaii was the most Asian state in the nation? When a show can get away with dumping its key Asian stars just like that, it will surely embolden those in other industries. Gains don't come without a challenge. For as long as necessary. Look at American history. And look at the current backslide on major issues from affirmative action to voting rights. "Hawaii Five-0" is TV giving us a reality check, just when we thought we had made some progress. I mean, more than 50 years after the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act, you'd figure we would get a break on things that are pretend. But somewhere on top of the heap, someone has made a decision. Paying two Asian American actors what they're worth isn't good business. So Kim and Park are gone. The white fantasy of "Hawaii Five-0" lives on. In the meantime, I'm not watching a Kim-less, Park-less 5-0. I encourage you to do the same, and to support Asian American actors, producers, and writers in their projects. And I'm doing what others are doing these days. Writing my own stuff. Telling my own stories. It seems to be the only way to beat the racial hierarchy of Hollywood.
