Together they maintained (and maintain) a complete database of all chemical weapon events since 1987. His father-in-law was the great economist Nicholas Kaldor, of Kaldor-Hicks improvement fame (far more common and important than Pareto improvements). He continued to work throughout his 70s, producing an influential timeline of chemical weapon use by Assad and an analysis of the notorious novichok family of nerve agents. An unfinished proposal, which he started pushing in the 70s, is that natural-pandemic preparedness is the best way to counter biological weapons: to make them ineffective, and so to remove all incentive to use them, and so to remove all incentive to make them. In her youth, her family was one of thousands forcibly displaced by Idi Amin in his racist campaign against Asians in Uganda. What role does the digital space play in Chinese lives, how reliable is it as a source of Chinese public opinion, and how do people feel about being monitored and, potentially, censored? On the podcast, I speak to Manya Koetse, the founder of whatsonweibo.com, which collates and translates the latest trends and topics from the platform into English; as well as Shen Lu, a reporter for Protocol who covers China and tech. With Manya, we muse about what censorship does to a nation's online discussion: the focus turns to policy issues like health and safety standards, or more superficial discussions like pets and travel. We're up to 2.5bn doses in arms, out of say 12bn. And we got several good ones! Huzzah! Obviously it was a catastrophe: through dumb inaction and a comedy of errors, we squandered the chance to suppress the virus. 4 million people are confirmed to have died of (or with) COVID - and given unbelievable underreporting that might be actually 12 million - and given Delta's momentum 20 million by the end is not unlikely. This is despite this virus being easy mode: unlike 1918, very few of the deaths were among the young frontline workers keeping the healthcare and delivery systems working; unlike SARS 1, post-viral disability is relatively rare. This is just the present pandemic and doesn't count future deaths from letting the thing become a permanent fixture. How did we do? How can we even answer that question? When I talk about whether a given country's response to COVID was a success or a failure, smart friends reply "governments had to balance the tradeoffs, so what looks like failure is really just compromise between multiple objectives (like economic activity)", "it's easy to say the optimal response in hindsight", that "it's difficult to compare different countries because of the different distances from China, wealth, state capacity". For instance, they think the UK did ok. They can think this because they choose to compare to the average actual response (never mind that the UK is top 20 in deaths per capita). But what would the best possible response look like? What did our institutions stop us from getting? Vax Any self-respecting COVID rant must foreground vaccination. It is the solution, where other policies just buy time, or else consume old or disabled people. We underinvested, and prevented market investment. The EU paid $14 per Pfizer dose. What was it really worth? The current black market price for Pfizer is about $500. But that's a gross underestimate of the shadow price, since you get almost zero quality assurance or liability from darknet dealers. (You might still get the travel passport, depending on how weak your country's infosec is.) One proper estimate of the per-vaccine social benefit is $6000. So we should have spent trillions in massive pre-purchase, on every credible vaccine. (The much-praised Operation Warp Speed and its equivalents elsewhere only pre-purchased about 2bn out of the necessary 12-14bn, and did so shockingly late, in August 2020.) $3000 x 14 bn doses pays for a lot of overtime on microlipid machine assembly (which was the bottleneck on mRNA vaccine supply last year). (That's assuming that you continue to ban vaccine markets, believing, as you apparently do, that fairness is worth the early death of millions. Another way to fund supply expansion for the global south is to just not get in our own way.) The rich world defected, duh 16% of the world bought 70% of the vaccines. What force on earth could stop them? None, so we needed the massive supply increases, which were effectively banned. This was not even good selfishness: it guaranteed the emergence of new strains in the global south. This is the real evil of the EU procurement. They want to harm their own by delaying 4 weeks, to look strong? Well, that's one thing. But had they done a pre-purchase in March 2020, then global supply could have scaled up, so that the inevitable snatch away from the global south was completely balanced out by expanded supply What did we do? For det første blei Qasem Soleimani, en iransk general, drept av en amerikansk drone. Dette førte til stor spenning mellom de to landene. Mange snakte om at det kunne bryte ut krig mellom USA og Iran. At en krig bryter ut, vil si at to land erklærer krig mot hverandre. Å bryte ut gjør at det føles mer plutselig ut. Den andre hendelsen var at Brexit endelig blei fullført. 31. januar blei Storbritannia det første landet til å forlate den Europeiske Union. Den tredje hendelsen var rykter om spredningen av et nytt virus i Wuhan i Kina. I januar føltes de to første hendelsene mye viktigere ut enn et nytt merkelig virus. Dette nye viruset var en ny variant av koronaviruset. Dette har prega hele 2020. I januar var det bare 10 000 offisielle tilfeller av koronasmittede. Det var ikke mer enn 10 000 som var smitta med korona i hele verden på dette tidspunktet. Dersom de kinesiske myndighetene hadde vært mer åpne om viruset og om de hadde vært raskere å reagere, så kunne kanskje pandemien ha blitt unngått. Dessverre var de få som reagerte. Den kinesiske legen Li Wenliang var et unntak. Wenliang advarte allerede i slutten av desember 2019 om at det nye koronaviruset var veldig farlig og at man måtte gjøre noe straks, altså med en gang. Han så at folk holdt på å dø av et nytt virus; de fikk ikke puste. Wenliang var en av flere kinesiske leger fra sykehuset i Wuhan som advarte mot koronaviruset. Kinesiske myndigheter valgte å dysse ned disse advarslene i stedet for å handle. Å dysse ned betyr at de prøvde å hindre noe fra å bli kjent. Wenliang døde 7. februar 2020 av det samme viruset han hadde advart mot. Han døde bare 33år gammel. Han var en av flere leger i Wuhan som døde av viruset. De kinesiske myndighetene hadde innen februar snudd. De unnskyldte seg ovenfor Wenliang. I tillegg innførte de en full nedstengelse av hele Wuhan. Dessverre var det for seint. Viruset holdt allerede på å spre seg til nye land rundt om i verden. I februar var det 86 000 som var smitta av korona. Det var mer enn åtte ganger så mange som i januar. Likevel føltes viruset så langt unna, fortsatt. Koronaviruset var et kinesisk problem. Det var i hvert fall det vi sa til hverandre. Europa ligger langt borte fra Kina. Vi snakka fortsatt mer om den koreanske filmen «Parasite» som blei den første ikke-engelskspråklige filmen som vant Oscar for beste film og begravelsen for den tidligere basketballspilleren Kobe Bryant. Men det skjedde ting i Italia og Iran. Det nye viruset begynte å spre seg. Nord i Italia begynte smitten å øke kraftig i slutten av februar. Jeg hadde nettopp blitt ferdig med å søke på utveksling til Torino som ligger nord i Italia til høsten 2020. Kanskje jeg måtte avlyse det? Jaja, uansett var det fortsatt trygt i Norge. Ikke sant? Italia ligger mye nærmere enn Kina, og viruset begynte å føles mer ekte ut nå. Ikke bare noe som skjedde langt borte i Kina.

Ett år som inte liknar något annat har vi fått glädjas åt andra saker än vanligt. Som att, som Claes, plötsligt kunna känna skitlukten på promenaden när luktsinnet varit helt borta. Och kriser kan också göra oss godare och mer hjälpsamma, säger psykologiforskare. Vi tittar tillbaka på året som gått och inser att allt inte varit dystert. In Hokkaido, where Ainu, the indigenous people thrived since the 10th century, a national museum called "Ainu Museum and Park" has opened last Sunday. At the opening ceremony, there were the governor of Hokkaido, Naomichi Suzuki, and the head of office of Ainu, Toshiya, Tone. A day before the ceremony, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide visited the facility as well. As far as I researched, none of the attendances raised topics such as discrimination towards Ainu and the occupation of the land by the Japanese pioneer in Meiji era. A dire il vero il suo compagno di partito Massimo D'Alema, nel libro che ha appena pubblicato, "Grande è la confusione sotto il cielo", arriva addirittura a elogiare la Cina e perfino per come ha gestito il dramma del coronavirus ("ha saputo fronteggiare questa prova in modo più efficace rispetto a noi", in quanto "ha fatto la differenza un grado minore di individualismo, una maggior coesione sociale e l'esistenza di reti comunitarie").In una recente conferenza poi D'Alema si è addirittura scagliato contro quello che ha chiamato "il partito anti-cinese" che - a suo dire - "è già all'opera anche in Europa in un clima di nuova guerra fredda".Quindi guai ad attaccare la Cina. Nelle prossime settimane però potrebbe perfino aggravarsi la responsabilità del regime di Pechino, visto quello che un personaggio di rilievo come sir Richard Dearlove, ex capo dei servizi segreti inglesi, ha dichiarato al "Telegraph": citando una ricerca di prossima pubblicazione, Dearlove ha spiegato che il virus sarebbe stato creato in laboratorio e ne sarebbe uscito per un incidente dando il via alla pandemia.Sarà interessante sentire cosa diranno Bersani e D'Alema. Nel frattempo va detto che un altro autogol è stato fatto dallo stesso Bersani quando ha cercato di mettere una toppa alla sua incredibile dichiarazione.Ha infatti spiegato di aver usato "un'iperbole" e ha aggiunto che ce l'aveva con Salvini che, alla manifestazione del 2 giugno, non avrebbe tenuto sempre la mascherina e non avrebbe osservato il distanziamento.Sembra un altro autogol perché proprio un esponente di Leu, il suo partito, occupa quel ministero della salute che - come informazione sanitaria - a febbraio spiegava che "non è necessario indossare la mascherina per la popolazione generale in assenza di sintomi di malattie respiratorie".È lo stesso ministero che mandava in onda il famoso spot in cui si affermava che "non è affatto facile il contagio". Con tutto questo Bersani punta il dito sugli altri.

Bo ricorda "la repressione della libertà di espressione in Cina", la feroce violazione dei diritti umani e la campagna persecutoria contro la religione con "la distruzione di migliaia di chiese".La sua conclusione è netta: "con la sua gestione disumana e irresponsabile del coronavirus, il Partito comunista cinese ha dimostrato ciò che molti pensavano in precedenza: che è una minaccia per il mondo... questo regime è responsabile, attraverso la sua negligenza e repressione criminale, della pandemia che oggi dilaga nelle nostre strade".Quindi "il regime cinese guidato dal potente XI e dal Partito comunista cinese - non dal suo popolo - deve a noi tutte le scuse e il risarcimento per la devastazione che ha causato. Ma come spesso accade, e come già spiegato, Pechino mostra al mondo solo una parte della verità.QUELLO CHE PECHINO NON DICEDopo una settimana in cui si è registrato appena un contagio a Wuhan, epicentro mondiale dell'epidemia, le autorità hanno dichiarato che a partire da oggi saranno tolte alcune restrizioni ai viaggi nella provincia dell'Hubei. Allo stesso modo Wuhan, la capitale provinciale, comincerà a uscire dalla quarantena l'8 aprile dopo oltre due mesi.I numeri ufficiali, però, non raccontano tutta la verità. A partire da febbraio, infatti, la Commissione nazionale della sanità cinese ha dichiarato che i casi di individui contagiati, ma asintomatici, non sarebbero stati inclusi nelle statistiche ufficiali. Secondo un documento governativo interno consultato dal South China Morning Post, gli asintomatici accertati a fine febbraio erano 43 mila, mentre quelli comunicati ufficialmente al mondo in uno studio pubblicato su Jama il 24 febbraio dal Centro cinese per il controllo e la prevenzione delle malattie erano appena 889.OGNI GIORNO REGISTRIAMO DECINE DI CASIPoiché gli asintomatici - secondo uno studio cinese, americano e inglese - potrebbero avere infettato oltre il 70 per cento dei contagiati a Wuhan, la loro presenza non è certo trascurabile. Mentre però il governo cinese continua a sostenere che l'infezione a Wuhan è stata bloccata e che ora la Cina soffre per i contagi di importazione da parte di stranieri arrivati nel Dragone dall'estero, un membro del Centro cinese per il controllo e la prevenzione delle malattie di Wuhan ha dichiarato a Caixin che «ogni giorno la città continua a registrare decine di casi, anche se si tratta di persone asintomatiche». Ecco perché «non è possibile affermare al momento che la trasmissione del contagio si è fermata».La presenza accertata di centinaia di asintomatici è anche il motivo per cui la task force provinciale contro il Covid-19 ha chiesto alla squadra di medici incaricata di monitorare il contagio di restare a Wuhan. Eppure questo non è quello che che il governo cinese comunica al mondo, impegnato com'è a diffondere attraverso la propaganda una nuova immagine della Cina.IL VIRUS È ITALIANO, NON CINESEParte di questa propaganda, e gli italiani che inneggiano alla Cina dovrebbero segnarselo, consiste nel far credere a tutto il mondo che il nuovo coronavirus non sia in realtà cinese, bensì italiano. Cornuti e mazziati dal governo cinese nostro "amico", dunque. Attraverso i suoi giornali e i suoi ambasciatori, Pechino ha infatti trasformato una dichiarazione ai media americani del direttore dell'Istituto Mario Negri, Giuseppe Remuzzi, in una ammissione di colpevolezza.Remuzzi ha dichiarato alla National Public Radio americana che alcuni medici di Bergamo notarono «strane polmoniti, molto gravi, a dicembre e persino a novembre. Significa che il virus circolava almeno in Lombardia prima che venissimo a conoscenza» del focolaio di Wuhan, reso noto a gennaio, nonostante le autorità cinesi sapessero del virus già a dicembre.I media di regime in Cina hanno avuto buon gioco a stravolgere queste parole, tanto che al Foglio Remuzzi ha dovuto rettificare: «Non c'è alcun dubbio che il virus sia cinese in base alla genetica. Le prime infezioni sono avvenute in Cina a novembre, forse anche prima, e se la Cina l'avesse detto prima... Questo è un esempio da manuale, da insegnare nelle Università, su come si possa manipolare l'informazione scientifica per ragioni di propaganda».REPRESSIONE TRAMITE APPIl Partito comunista purtroppo non è cambiato e non ha imparato niente dalle vicende di Li Wenliang e Ai Fen, i medici che per primi hanno avvisato la comunità del virus e che per questo sono stati redarguiti e minacciati dal regime. Se li avessero ascoltati, avrebbero forse potuto evitare la pandemia. Invece li hanno messi a tacere, così come oggi nascondono i nuovi contagi, dimostrando efficienza solo nell'applicare la tecnologia alla sorveglianza di massa della popolazione.Se nei prossimi giorni le restrizioni ai viaggi in tutta la provincia dell'Hubei saranno gradualmente tolte, non tutti potranno muoversi liberamente. A ogni cittadino, infatti, attraverso le app di Alibaba e WeChat è stato o verrà assegnato un Qr code che ne certifica la condizione sanitaria, riporta Bloomberg. Solo chi ha il disco verde può entrare in ristoranti, bar, supermercati o comprare biglietti del treno.È L'APP A DECIDERE CHI VA A SCUOLAIl sistema è già in uso in oltre 200 città, spiega Reuters. Nell'app bisogna inserire i propri dati personali, la carta di identità, la propria posizione, i viaggi effettuati negli ultimi mesi, la propria storia clinica e dichiarare se si è stati in contatto con chiunque abbia avuto problemi di Covid-19 negli ultimi 14 giorni. Nessuno sa in base a quali criteri l'app fornisca alla fine un codice verde (libertà di movimento), arancione o rosso (obbligo di quarantena). Diversi utenti hanno lamentato su Weibo errori clamorosi del sistema: ma fino a quando non verranno risolti, non potranno uscire di casa.Allo stesso modo, potranno rientrare a scuola e avranno accesso all'educazione in ben 300 città solo quegli studenti che l'app di Tencent giudicherà come «sani» e liberi dal rischio di contagio, informa Caixin. Dei lettori di codici a barre saranno posti all'ingresso degli istituti, anche delle scuole elementari: chi avrà luce verde potrà studiare, gli altri no. È il modello cinese.

La direttrice del pronto soccorso dell'ospedale Centrale di Wuhan ha rilasciato martedì un'intervista esplosiva al magazine cinese Renwu, che ora le autorità stanno cercando in ogni modo di censurare. «Se avessi saputo che cosa sarebbe successo, me ne sarei infischiata dei rimproveri da parte dei miei superiori», ha dichiarato. «Ne avrei fottutamente parlato a chiunque e dovunque».Il 30 dicembre, dopo settimane passate a visitare decine di malati affetti da una strana influenza resistente alle normali cure, Ai ha ricevuto dal laboratorio i risultati delle analisi fatte su un paziente. Poi cerchiò il risultato, fece una foto al rapporto e la inviò ad altri otto colleghi in diversi ospedali di Wuhan.La stessa notte, Ai ricevette un messaggio dal suo ospedale che le intimava di non diffondere informazioni intorno alla malattia misteriosa «per evitare il panico». Due giorni dopo, il capo del comitato di Partito interno all'ospedale la rimproverò per aver «diffuso voci e messo in pericolo la stabilità» e le vietò di diffondere messaggi o immagini relative al virus. «Mi fece sentire come se fossi io a rovinare il futuro di Wuhan. Mi stava punendo solo per aver fatto il mio lavoro. Ma come potevo non dire niente a nessuno davanti a un nuovo virus così pericoloso? Io avevo solo seguito il mio istinto di medico. Se solo potessi tornare indietro, lo direi a tutti: i miei colleghi non sarebbero morti».NO ALLE MASCHERINEAi Fen, proprio come Li Wenliang (morto il 6 febbraio per aver contratto il virus dopo aver denunciato l'epidemia, senza che le autorità lo ascoltassero), obbedì alle autorità ma chiese almeno il permesso di vestire maschere e camici protettivi. Il capo dell'ospedale le rispose di no, perché questo avrebbe potuto allarmare la popolazione. Il risultato è sotto gli occhi di tutti: quattro colleghi di Ai dell'ospedale, compreso Li, sono morti e molti altri si sono ammalati.«Sempre più pazienti arrivavano al pronto soccorso mentre il raggio dell'infezione si allargava», continua Ai nell'intervista. «Era evidente che il virus poteva essere trasmesso dalle persone». Il 21 gennaio, nota il Guardian, quando le autorità cinesi hanno confermato il pericolo per il nuovo virus, al pronto soccorso dell'ospedale Centrale di Wuhan arrivavano già oltre 1.500 pazienti al giorno, contro una media usuale di neanche 500.La direttrice del pronto soccorso ricorda il caso di un uomo che guardava fisso nel vuoto mentre un medico gli consegnava il certificato di morte del suo figlio 32enne, quando ancora non si computavano i registri delle vittime del coronavirus. O quello di un padre così malato che non riusciva neanche a scendere dall'automobile. Quando Ai gli si fece incontro per aiutarlo, lui le morì davanti. La dottoressa ha raccontato tutte queste esperienze senza preoccuparsi delle possibili ripercussioni, ma da due giorni, cioè da quando l'intervista è stata pubblicata in Cina, nessuno ha più sue notizie.EDUCHIAMO WUHAN A RINGRAZIARE IL PARTITOSe il regime comunista, invece che punire Ai, Li e altri sette medici, avesse dato loro retta forse avrebbe evitato la morte di migliaia di persone. Ma era troppo impegnato a difendere la propria immagine e a non compromettere la riunione provinciale del Partito a Wuhan (7-17 gennaio). Avrebbe almeno potuto ringraziare i medici che hanno affrontato la crisi in prima linea, mentre i vertici del Partito comunista se ne stavano comodamente al riparo a Pechino (il segretario generale e presidente Xi Jinping si è fatto vedere per la prima volta martedì dopo un mese e mezzo).Invece no, nessun ringraziamento. Anzi, il segretario del Partito di Wuhan, Wang Zhonglin, ha lanciato un'inedita campagna per «educare la popolazione a mostrare gratitudine verso il Partito comunista». Cioè lo stesso Partito che, elogiato in Italia da tanti ammiratori, ha causato la diffusione dell'epidemia in Cina, silenziando per oltre un mese e mezzo tutti coloro che hanno cercato di avvertire la popolazione del rischio che correva.La campagna di «educazione alla gratitudine», che ha fatto infuriare i cittadini di Wuhan - tanto che il segretario provinciale del Partito, Ying Yong, è dovuto intervenire a mettere una pezza definendoli «eroi» -, è in questi giorni accompagnata da una seconda campagna di propaganda. Quella finalizzata a mettere in dubbio che il coronavirus di Wuhan sia un virus "cinese". Il primo a suonare lo spartito scritto da Pechino è stato l'ambasciatore cinese in Sud Africa, Lin Songtian: «Studi di scienziati di tutto il mondo confermano che ancora non si conosce l'origine del Covid19. L'Oms ripete che bisogna evitare qualunque stigmatizzazione» nei confronti della Cina. Zhang Ping, console generale della Cina a Los Angeles, ha aggiunto in un editoriale sul Los Angeles Times: «Nell'era della globalizzazione virus come questo ci insegnano che le epidemie non hanno confini. Contro la Cina ci sono attacchi ideologici e razzisti». La battaglia del regime contro la realtà procede a passo spedito.

Nella città di Wuhan, nella provincia dello Hubei e in generale in tutta la Cina continentale i contagi da Coronavirus (Sars-Cov-2) sono sempre più rarefatti, il che fa sperare che esista un modo per contrastare la diffusione della malattia. Partiamo dalla storia di Li Wenliang, il medico di Wuhan che per cercò di lanciare l'allarme e che si trovò invece a fronteggiare la poca fiducia nel suo lavoro. Oggi Li Wenliang, morto il 7 febbraio a causa delle complicazioni della malattia CoViD-19, è stato riabilitato.Insomma, Wuhan celebra i suoi eroi, i medici e tutta la cittadinanza che sta uscendo da un periodo incredibilmente difficile, però non saremo davvero fuori da questo periodo finché non avremo un vaccino. È abbastanza chiaro infatti che la malattia Covid-19 non si cancellerà solo con misure di contenimento, difficilmente succederà come con la Sars. Il regime ha quasi fermato il contagio: ieri si sono registrati appena 20 nuovi casi, contro gli oltre 3.000 di un mese fa, e neanche uno fuori dall'Hubei, la provincia che ospita l'epicentro dell'epidemia, la città di Wuhan. Qui i suoi 11 milioni di abitanti da un mese non possono uscire di casa e le strade assomigliano a quelle di una città fantasma. Circa 60 milioni di persone sono state messe in quarantena in tutto il paese, 14 ospedali sono stati costruiti in pochi giorni per accogliere i nuovi malati e chi nasconde i sintomi dell'infezione può essere condannato a morte. L'approccio estremo di Pechino è stato definito «coraggioso» dall'Oms, che l'ha valutato come «lo sforzo di contenimento della malattia più ambizioso, agile e aggressivo della storia», mentre per il Corriere della Sera il modello cinese è «da seguire».SE IL MONDO È NEI GUAI È COLPA DEL REGIMEÈ vero che l'assenza di democrazia ha permesso ad esempio al governo cinese di sospendere il campionato di calcio, causando perdite milionarie ai club, senza incassare proteste di alcun tipo e di mettere in quarantena 60 milioni di persone senza che nessuno battesse ciglio. Ma la natura autoritaria del governo cinese, così efficiente quando si tratta di obbligare e reprimere, è anche quella che ha permesso al virus di circolare indisturbato per almeno due mesi. Se oggi l'Italia (e presto la Francia, la Germania e chissà quanti altri paesi) si trova in ginocchio è perché a inizio dicembre la Cina non ha rivelato la presenza di abitanti di Wuhan in ospedale con gravi sindromi respiratorie simili a quelle causate dalla Sars.Ed è sempre per colpa del sistema autoritario cinese che quando un medico, Li Wenliang, oggi osannato da tutti i media cinesi e del mondo, si è accorto dell'esistenza di un nuovo virus e ha avvertito i suoi colleghi, invece che essere ascoltato, è stato convocato da polizia e Partito comunista che gli hanno ordinato di negare tutto. Il sistema autoritario cinese non voleva fare brutta figura, soprattutto in un momento in cui doveva svolgersi il congresso provinciale del Partito a Wuhan, e voleva preservare se stesso a discapito della salute della popolazione.LE AUTORITÀ MENTONOE perché, nonostante gli ospedali di Wuhan fossero da giorni strapieni e senza più posti, nessun giornale ha lanciato l'allarme? Perché il sindaco della città non ha detto nulla fino al 23 gennaio, permettendo a tutti i suoi abitanti di uscire liberamente da Wuhan e infettare l'intero territorio della Cina e di conseguenza i paesi di tutto il mondo (perché il contagio è partito dalla Cina, cara Cnn, non dall'Italia)? Semplice: perché il sistema autoritario cinese ha impedito la diffusione di informazioni, sia da parte della stampa che delle autorità locali, fino a quando il segretario del Partito comunista Xi Jinping non ha lanciato l'allarme il 23 gennaio. La Cina ha già avuto 80.924 casi e 3.136 decessi. [...]Oms e giornali si sperticano in lodi al sistema della quarantena cinese, ma non si chiedono perché quando venerdì 6 marzo la vicepremier Sun Chunlan si è recata a Wuhan per verificarne l'andamento, centinaia di persone si sono arrischiate ad affacciarsi dai balconi dei palazzi blindati per gridare: «Falsità, solo falsità, le autorità mentono». I cinesi non capiscono e non vedono quanto il loro sistema sia desiderabile? Il punto è un altro: i cinesi conoscono davvero il sistema e non si fermano agli specchietti per le allodole.QUANTE PERSONE ABBANDONATE IN QUARANTENAQuante persone, infatti, come il nonno di Zhang Bella, si sono ammalate a Wuhan, hanno cercato invano posto in ospedale, non hanno mai fatto il tampone nonostante presentassero tutti i sintomi del Covid-19 e sono stati messi frettolosamente in quarantena, abbandonati dalle autorità e morti da soli nel letto di casa? Il signor Zhang è stato immediatamente cremato da un'agenzia funebre senza che la sua morte fosse ascritta al virus. L'Oms elogia il governo comunista perché in Cina il coronavirus avrebbe un tasso di mortalità di appena il 3,8%, mentre in Italia già sfiora il 5%. Ma com'è possibile credere alle cifre di Pechino? Quanti signor Zhang ci sono stati in Cina?A Lianshui, nella provincia dello Jiangsu, un'intera famiglia è stata blindata in casa con sbarre di metallo dalle autorità locali. Sulla porta è stato appeso il cartello: «In questa casa vive una persona rientrata da Wuhan. È vietato toccare». La famiglia ha confessato che sarebbero tutti morti di fame se un vicino, mosso a compassione, non gli avesse calato dal balcone del cibo. Simili metodi di quarantena forzata sono stati applicati in tutta la Cina da zelanti funzionari del Partito. Quante famiglie non hanno avuto la stessa fortuna di quella di Lianshui e sono decedute? Non lo sappiamo, ma come si fa a elogiare la quarantena con caratteristiche cinesi davanti a simili eccessi?GUARITI... EPPURE MORTIE ancora, c'è bisogno di ricordare la vicenda di Yan Xiaowen, chiuso in quarantena insieme al figlio minore e costretto ad abbandonare il figlio maggiore, affetto da paralisi cerebrale, in casa da solo? Le autorità locali della contea di Hongan (Hubei) avevano giurato al padre che si sarebbero presi cura di lui, invece l'hanno lasciato morire di fame in mezzo ai suoi escrementi. «La verità è che è morto e basta», hanno risposto i funzionari del partito locale all'inchiesta seguita al caso. Quante persone, come il figlio di Yan Xiaowen, sono morte per colpa di un sistema autoritario tanto efficiente quanto disumano?Circa 57 mila persone sono guarite in Cina dal Covid-19, eppure ci sono delle storie che portano a dubitare dei numeri ufficiali rilasciati dalle autorità. Li Liang, come raccontato da Caixin, è stato dichiarato definitivamente guarito il 25 febbraio e posto in quarantena a Wuhan per altre due settimane, come previsto dagli stringenti regolamenti tanto elogiati dai giornali. In quarantena ha cominciato a sentirsi male di nuovo, ma nessun medico lo ha visitato perché il suo caso era risolto e il 5 marzo è stato trovato morto nella sua stanza di hotel dalla moglie. Le tac presentavano ancora problemi ai polmoni ma Li Liang era stato dimesso ugualmente e oggi è ancora contato dalla Cina come un caso medico di successo. Quante persone come Li Liang si trovano tra quei 57 mila "guariti"?ECCO COME "RIPARTE" L'ECONOMIA IN CINATutti questi dettagli ovviamente non sono mai menzionati da chi liscia il pelo al regime comunista in Cina e poi denuncia il pericolo fascismo in Italia. L'unico problema della quarantena a oltranza riguarderebbe i suoi effetti nefasti sull'economia. Ma Pechino ha dichiarato che l'economia in Cina è già ripartita, fornendo a tutto il mondo dati inequivocabili. Peccato che, ha scoperto Caixin, i numeri sono tanto affidabili quanto quelli delle persone guarite che si godono la convalescenza al cimitero. Infatti, hanno rivelato molti imprenditori al giornale, il governo centrale calcola la ripresa economica di fabbriche e aziende in base al consumo di energia. Per questo, chiede a tutti i segretari locali del Partito comunista di rispettare certe quote di elettricità consumata. I segretari si rifanno sui proprietari delle aziende, che a loro volta azionano e fanno andare anche tutta la notte macchinari, luci e condizionatori. Le aziende però restano vuote e i dipendenti a casa per mancanza di lavoro. Così le quote sono rispettate e l'economia riparte sulla carta anche se nella realtà non cambia niente. «Falsità, solo falsità», come gridavano gli abitanti di Wuhan a Sun Chunlan.Se a queste storie aggiungiamo che quei medici, giornalisti, professori universitari e singoli cittadini che hanno provato a denunciare sia l'epidemia sia gli errori del governo sono stati arrestati, forse ai tanti leoni da tastiera che popolano il web nostrano non conviene molto elogiare il sistema autoritario cinese. Il governo italiano deve migliorare la gestione dell'emergenza, smettendola di inviare segnali contrastanti e confusi, certo, la gente deve comprendere la gravità della situazione e rispettare le direttive, senza dubbio, ma se proprio dobbiamo rifarci a un modello guardiamo alla Corea del Sud. A estas alturas de la pandemia hay una historia que todavía no te hemos contado. Mediados de noviembre de 2019. En la radio acabamos de vivir el fin de semana de la Marca Sports Weekend en Marbella, seguro que lo recuerdas.  Es un evento de conferencias y actos relacionados con el deporte y con un montón de estrellas: Boris Becker, Mike Powell, Anatoly Karpov, Sergio García, Del Bosque, Javi Fernández... El lunes 18 de de noviembre comenzaba la Copa Davis en Madrid con un nuevo formato.  Una Copa Davis que íbamos a ganar días después con la selección de Nadal y compañía. Y en el fútbol hubo terremoto.  Porque España goleó a Rumanía 5-0 en el Metropolitano. Y sí, aquel día fue la noche de cuchillos largos, el último partido de Robert Moreno como seleccionador.  Al día siguiente Luis Enrique le llamaría desleal en rueda de prensa. Todos estábamos muy pendientes de todo eso y de muchas más cosas que estaban en el ocurriendo en el deporte y en nuestras vidas.  Pero algo, aquellas horas, estaba ocurriendo justo en ese momento a 9714 kilómetros de la Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas. En la provincia de Hubei, en China, el 17 de noviembre de 2019, caía enfermo un hombre de 55 años. Aquel hombre fue el paciente cero del Covid-19. Este dato lo ha dado el periódico South China Morning Post que ha tenido acceso a documentos del Gobierno de Pekín. Ahora están tratando de identificarlo. Desde aquel día y hasta que acabó el mes de noviembre se estima que se infectaron entre 2 y 5 personas al día. La revista científica The Lancet ha situado el comienzo de la infección el 1 de diciembre, y para la Organización Mundial de la Salud es el 8 de diciembre el día del primer infectado oficial. Esto lo sabemos ahora.  Pero entonces vivíamos en nuestros mundos de polémicas y videoarbitrajes.  Pero allí, a 9714 kilómetros de las salas VOR el virus empezaba a multiplicarse sin que las autoridades chinas levantaran la voz. Fue en un grupo de WeChat, que es el Whatsapp que se usa allí.  Un oftalmólogo de 34 años llamado Li Wenliang avisó a 150 alumnos de su facultad de medicina: cuidado, tenemos 7 casos con un extraño virus aquí en el hospital de Wuhan. Vienen de la zona del mercado. Puede que haya vuelto el SARS. Fue la primera vez que alguien levantó la mano para decir públicamente que algo estaba pasando.  Y fue mes y medio después del primer infectado. El pantallazo de esa conversación de WeChat se propagó entre la población, paradójicamente se hizo viral, y en Año Nuevo ya muchos hablaban en Wuhan de un nuevo virus, un nuevo SARS, que son las iniciales del Síndrome Agudo Respiratorio Severo. Las autoridades chinas localizaron a Li Wenliang y le acusaron de propagar bulos y mentir.  Fue llevado a una comisaría y a firmar una carta en la que se comprometía a no volver a divulgar bulos ni rumores. Eso ocurrió una semana después de su primer mensaje.  El 8 de enero atendió en el hospital a una paciente con glaucoma, que todavía no presentaba síntomas, pero era portadora del nuevo virus.  Le infectó. El día 10 Li Wenliang empezó a tener los primeros síntomas. Enfermó y tuvo que ser ingresado. Cuando ya no había cómo esconder la enfermedad, Li Wenliang se convirtió en un símbolo para millones de chinos.  Era el rostro de lo mal que se había llevado esta crisis: ocultación, encubrimiento y amenazas. Una incompetencia total. El 1 de febrero recibió el diagnóstico y falleció unos días después.  Desde su cama, unos días antes, hablaba con la CNN y reconocía que no se sentía bien y que tenía dificultades para respirar. Se sabe que el virus procede de un murciélago, pero se sospecha que ha tenido que pasar por otro animal, porque entonces, en noviembre y diciembre, los murciélagos de esa región de China estaban invernando. Esta crisis empezó allí, a 9714 kilómetros de distancia, hace 120 días.  Parecen pocos días para recorrer tantos kilómetros, pero así es. La humanidad está pasando por uno de los momentos más difíciles de su historia. Una amenaza global, para todos los hombres y mujeres del planeta.  Y el enemigo es invisible. Nunca antes habíamos sentido tantos que habíamos perdido la partida.  Nunca habíamos dormido tan solos. Nunca habíamos sentido miedo del silencio, ni nos habíamos sentido tan arropados con un aplauso. Nunca como ahora se nos habían rebelado los recuerdos que nos ponen contra la pared. Si de algo está sirviendo esta crisis es para darnos cuenta de que aunque los vientos de la vida soplen fuerte, somos como juncos que se doblan pero siempre siguen en pie. With panic and hysteria creeping in, the economic and geopolitical consequences of the coronavirus outbreak have begun to surface. The past couple of weeks have seen Chinese markets plunge, triggering what could be the start of an economic slowdown. With uncertainty surrounding when this crisis will end, the global market reaction has been equally worrying. To add even more pressure on the Chinese state, there has been a recent rise in anti-government sentiment, particularly surrounding the government's treatment of Doctor Li Wenliang, a Wuhan based doctor who attempted to alert people to the outbreak, but was instead accused by the government of making false statements on the internet. Doctor Li eventually contracted the virus himself and passed away on February 7th. Dr Li's case speaks to the wider theme of the growing frustration surrounding Chinese censorship in the face of the global public health crisis. On Dec. 31, the government in Wuhan, China, confirmed that health authorities were treating dozens of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause.On January 11 2019, a 61 year old man died from the virus in Wuhan. He was the first person to die from the 2019 novel coronavirus. He was a regular customer at the market in which the virus originated. The United States, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand all confirmed cases of the Coronavirus on January 20th. These were the first cases of the virus outside of mainland china.On Jan. 23, Chinese authorities closed off Wuhan, a city of more than 11 million, by canceling planes and trains leaving the city, and suspending buses, subways and ferries within it. At this point in time , at least 17 people had died and more than 570 others had been infectedThe World Health Organization officially declared the 2019 novel coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern on January 30.On Jan. 31, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines said they would suspend service, for at least two months, between the United States and mainland China. The Trump administration said it would suspend entry into the United States by any foreign nationals who had traveled to China in the last 14 days, which is the maximum time it takes a person to become sick after being exposed to the virus. By this date, 213 people had died and nearly 9,800 had been infected worldwide.Dr. Li Wenliang, a Chinese doctor, died on February 7 after contracting the coronavirus. He was deemed a hero after raising alarm early on that the virus could spread quickly and easily and spin out of control. However, Chinese authorities silenced him and forced him to sign a legal agreement denouncing his warning as an unfounded and illegal rumor. Dr. Li's death provoked anger and frustration at how the Chinese government mishandled the situation by not sharing information earlier and by silencing whistle-blowers.Chinese officials said the death toll had reached 1,016 while the number of infections had grown to 42,638 on Feb. 11.After widespread public outrage, the Communist Party in China fired top government officials in Hubei province and Wuhan.  

The Coronavirus outbreak has sparked fear around the world, leading to quarantines, transportation shut downs, and disrupting trade, travel, and more. Reports are now emerging that the Chinese government initially tried to cover up the outbreak, threatening doctors and forcing whistleblowers to recant their statements. How has the initial response changed? And what does Coronavirus mean for China going forward? Chinese doctor Li Wenliang who reported the seriousness of coronavirus and was reprimanded by Wuhan authorities, passed away last week. This whistleblower was considered a hero for spreading awareness since authorities were not acting. He was one of several doctors trying to blow the whistle weeks before the outbreak up to the point he got infected himself with the virus and died.
