Mildred Yuan is one of the top agents in the UK who represents world class performers and creatives from every corner of the industry. Her speciality is finding clients that excel in more than one area and help them find out where they want to go next.  Alongside being an agent, one thing you may not know about her is that she's lived a secret double life as a dancer. She trained at the Ballet Austin Academy in the USA and the Team Diablo Academy in Italy, which many call the elite centre for ballroom and latin dancing. Her training led her on to represent the UK in 7 World and European championships.  Mildred was part of the renowned United Agents until 2023, before starting there in 2012 she was a management consultant where she offered advice to top FTSE 150 brands across a range of businesses. She holds a BA in Economics from Harvard and an MA in English Literature from Cambridge.  She is also a full member of BAFTA, serves on the Personal Manager's Association (PMA) and does a great amount of work for diversity with the “Diverse Squad” also known as the Racial Diversity Committee. Mildred discusses the role of an agent and how it's not exactly what we think it is. One thing she mentioned was that having an agent can get you more opportunities/auditions etc, however the work doesn't rely solely at the feet of your agent. You as the performer still have to contribute to your career.  In addition, about how she works with her clients, her time with United, the “do's and don'ts” of working with your agent, how you the performer or creative can find your superpower and how she can work with you to make the career you want.  Check out her website below for more information on her career, mentoring sessions and how to get in touch.  Thank you Mildred, let's do this again! From representing Yoko Ono to winning class action lawsuits on behalf of actors and musicians, Neville Johnson and his partner Douglas Johnson (no relationship) have built one of the most interesting and successful entertainment law practices in the nation, specializing in representing “talent” as opposed to the business side of the industry.  Join Rahul and Ben for a fascinating discussion with Neville and Doug, as they describe how they got their start in this practice, recount some of their most interesting cases, and talk about trends in entertainment law resulting from new technologies. About Neville Johnson - Senior PartnerWebsite: Johnson and Johnson, LLP Law Firm | Johnson and Johnson, LLP (jjllplaw.com) Professional Experience:Neville L. Johnson graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley (1971).  He received his law degree from Southwestern Law School (1975), graduating near the top of his class.  He has tried over 28 civil jury trials and over 70 civil trials and arbitrations without a jury. He is a member of the invitation-only American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and is on the Board of Governors of the Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles (CAALA since 2005), the Board of Directors of the national organization Public Justice, and on the Board of Governors of the Beverly Hills Bar Association 2013-2015 and 2020-2022 (BHBA). He has also served as an adjunct professor at Southwestern Law School since 2012, where he teaches Entertainment and Media Litigation. However, his greatest pride has been in defending the privacy rights of all citizens against the worst malefactors in the media. His work in this field was perhaps best summarized by Professor David A. Elder, a leading expert on the law of privacy, who published the following special dedication in his treatise, Privacy Torts: To Neville L. Johnson… who has led the charge, often successfully (and always creatively and with great passion) in exposing some of the worst outrages of media newsgathering. Neville ranks with Brandeis and Warren as the great defenders of privacy. All America is in his debt. Mr. Johnson has practiced entertainment law and IP law since 1975 [except for 10 months in 1977-78 when he was a Public Defender (juvenile) in Los Angeles County and handled over 100 matters, including two murder trials and one attempted murder trial]. Mr. Johnson has represented many well-known celebrities and entertainment concerns. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Country Music Superstar Lynn Anderson's Personal Manager, Michael Dempsey  About Harvey's guest: If you're a fan of our show, you'll know that one of our most popular features is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, in which we pay tribute to legendary stars who are no longer with us.   Today, we're honouring one of the most beloved and iconic female recording artists and performers in the history of country music:  Lynn Anderson.    She recorded 52 albums and 72 singles, 50 of which were top 40 hits,18 reached the Top-10, and 12 captured the No. 1 spot.  She was known for songs like “You're My Man”, “How Can I Unlove You”, “Keep Me in Mind”, “What a Man My Man is” - and of course, her phenomenal worldwide crossover smash hit in 1970, “Rose Garden”.   That song made her an international superstar, and a trailblazer.   In fact, she was the first female country artist to have a #1 record worldwide, she was the first female country performer to appear on The Tonight Show, and she was the first female country performer to headline at Madison Square Garden.  Her multi-platinum “Rose Garden” album was the highest grossing album by a female recording artist for 27 years until Shania Twain broke that record in 1997.   Lynn Anderson won a Grammy Award, 2 Academy of Country Music Awards, an American Music Award, 3 Billboard Magazine Awards, a Country Music Association Award, and a People's Choice Award.  She was also named Artist of the Decade by Record World, and in 2019 she was inducted into the Western Music Association Hall of Fame AND the North American Country Music Association Hall of Fame.  In 2002, Country Music Television named her one of the "40 Greatest Women of Country Music", and Rolling Stone included her on their list of the "100 Greatest Country Artists of All Time".   She's such a legend, that she's even had a ROSE named after her by the American Rose Society.    Today's guest, Michael Dempsey, started out as president of Lynn Anderson's official fan club at the age of 18.  He then became her accountant, then her booking agent for over 10 years, and finally, he was her manager for the last 12 years of her life, until she passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in 2015 at the age of 67.  But most of all, he was Ms. Anderson's very dear friend and closest confidant. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Lynn Anderson, go to:https://www.lynnandersonrosegarden.com/https://www.facebook.com/LynnAndersonOfficialhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1438216589737872https://www.instagram.com/lynnandersonofficial/http://youtube.com/c/lynnandersonrosegardentvhttps://twitter.com/LynnAshowhttps://www.tiktok.com/@lynnandersonofficial #MichaelDempsey   #LynnAnderson  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Attendance Bias

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. I am so excited to share today's episode with you, because it's one of my favorite kind's: the kind where I just ask one question or bring up one topic, and the guest gets to be the story-teller. And boy, does today's guest have a lot of great stories to tell. That guest is Matt Busch, who has held several jobs with bands that you and I are familiar with but his current post is as Bob Weir's personal manager. He's been part of the Grateful Dead family for about 20 years. But before he became associated with the Grateful Dead Family in an official capacity, Matt was an employee at Prime Cuts, the Long Island shop that has been covered and mentioned several times on this podcast. It was through there that I got in touch with him, and it should be no surprise that he was and is a big Phish fan before he became professionally well-known within the jamband world. You may notice that today's episode is a bit longer than usual. I normally try to edit our episodes down to about an hour but the more I listened to today's recording, the less I wanted to cut. If you're like me, you love hearing anecdotes about your favorite band, and today's episode is a series of anecdotes about two of our favorites–Phish and all of the Grateful Dead and Bob Weir acts since the early 2000s.To help narrow it down, Matt and I decided to go through his Attendance Bias shows like a slideshow–he thought of the more memorable or influential shows he's seen or been a part of and it became story-time with Matt Bush. In order, we decided on Phish's show at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY on February 12, 1993, the Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Fare Thee Well celebration in 2015, Phish's show on July 25, 2015 at the Forum in Los Angeles where Matt took Bill Walton to his first Phish show, and then ended up in Nashville's Ascend Amphitheater on October 18, 2016 when Bob Weir sat in for most of the 2nd set and the encore. But I'm taking too long. Let's hear Matt tell the stories about how to write Dead and Company setlists, Bill Walton vs. the Railriders, and how to pick the encores to epic shows in today's episode of Attendance Bias.Audio used in today's episode:2/12/93Fare Thee Well7/25/1510/18/16
